The work examines contemporary climate, soil cover, and vegetative cover of the southern forest-steppe in the Bashkir Cis-Ural region. Functioning of natural complexes in changing climate has been analyzed. Dynamics and transformation of the complexes under the impact of natural and anthropogenic factors have been investigated. Contemporary vegetative cover has been studied and the percentage of synanthropic species has been determined.

A climate-related shift in the range boundaries of the western–central Eurasian subboreal species Melanargia russiae in the Ural region from the northern forest-steppe zone to pine–birch forests was found. Morphological variation of M. russiae wings from the boundary northern populations and populations from the main part of the range in the Urals were studied. The results of a complex analysis of the morphological traits (size, wing shape, and wing pattern eyespots) confirm the hypothesis that the local population formed in the south of Sverdlovsk oblast and contradict the hypothesis of the migratory origin of M. russiae imago.

Current understanding of phylogeographical structure and genetic diversity of Siberian roe deer remains limited mainly due to small sample size and/or low geographical coverage in previous studies. Published data suggest at least two phylogroups: western (Ural Mountains and Western Siberia) and eastern (east from lake Baikal, including the Korean peninsula), but their phylogenetic relationship remains unclear. Combined sequences of cytochrome b (1140 bp) and the mtDNA control region (963 bp) were analyzed from 219 Siberian roe deer from 12 locations in Russia, Mongolia, and South Korea, which cover a large part of its range, to assess genetic diversity and phylogeographical status. Special emphasis was placed on the demographic history and genetic features of central, peripheral, and isolated populations. Results of median‐joining network and phylogenetic tree analyses indicate that Siberian roe deer from the Urals to the Pacific Ocean are genetically diverse and that geographical distribution and composition of haplogroups coincide with previously described ranges of the subspecies Capreolus pygargus pygargus and Capreolus pygargus tianschanicus. We found that peripheral populations in the northwestern parts of the species range (Urals), as well as the isolated population from Jeju Island, are genetically distinct from those in the core part of the range, both in terms of genetic diversity and quantitative composition of haplogroups. We also found that northwestern (Urals) and northern (Yakutia) peripheral populations share the same haplogroup and fall into the same phylogenetic clade with the isolated population from Jeju Island. This finding sheds light on the taxonomic status of the Jeju Island population and leads to hypotheses about the discordance of morphological and genetic evolution in isolated populations and specific genetic features of peripheral populations.

In spite of high biodiversity within the honeybee species Apis mellifera L., only one geographical race, the dark-colored forest honeybee A. m. mellifera, is uniquely adapted to severe environmental conditions of Eurasian forest and forest-steppe zones. Within the vast range of this race, only single isolates remain, where the dark forest honeybee is purebred. The Bashkir population is supposed to be one of these isolates. Molecular-genetic assessment of the state of the gene pool of this population revealed that southern honeybee races were introduced into the Bashkortostan Republic with great intensity, which was above the assimilation capacity of the population. The main part of the former range of the Bashkir population represents a hybrid zone with approximately equal ratio between gene pools of local and introduced honeybees. Our studies provide the possibility to single out one extant reserve of A. m. mellifera, Burzyanskii raion, in which the proportion of local bees in the gene pool is 0.98.

The trend of species diversity and spatiotemporal distribution of spherical radiolarians of the genus Entactinia Foreman, 1963 in the Permian Period is analyzed. The center of origin of Permian entactinians in the Cis-Ural Paleobasin is established in the area of the modern interfluve of the Ural River and latitudinal current of the Belaya River on the Southern Urals. It is shown that the species composition of this genus almost completely changed in certain Permian epochs. Two forefather species of each new pleiad of Early, Middle, and Late Permian are revealed: Entactinia parapycnoclada and E. tyrrelli. Two new species of the Lower Permian radiolarians from the Southern Urals and Northern Mugodzhary, E. chernykhi sp. nov. and E. subquadrata sp. nov., are described.

Genetic variation in 24 populations of Siberian fir Abies sibirica Lebed. from the Urals, West Siberia, East Siberia, South Siberia, and the Baikal region were examined using allozyme markers. Three out of fifteen allozyme loci proved to be polymorphic. Heterozygosity He was 6.6-9.6%, which is substantially lower than that in other widely spread boreal conifers. Our results suggest that the Siberian fir populations are subdivided into four geographic groups: (1) the Baikal Lake group, (2) the Sayan and the Altai group, (3) the Middle and Southern Urals group, and (4) Subpolar and Northern Urals group. This pattern of geographic differentiation may be explained by the preservation of the Siberian fir during the last glacial maximum (18 000-22000 years B.P.) in isolated refugia with subsequent recolonization of the present area. FST in the populations examined was 10.16%, which is comparable to the estimate for Larix sibirica (7.9%), a conifer species having a similar range and pattern of geographic population differentiation.

Questions: What is the relative importance of landscape variables compared to habitat quality variables in determining species composition in floodplain forests across different physiographic areas? How do species composition and species traits relate to effects of particular landscape variables? Do lowland and mountain areas differ in effects of landscape variables on species composition? Location: Southern Czech Republic. Methods: A total of 240 vegetation relevés of floodplain forests with measured site conditions were recorded across six physiographic areas. I tested how physiographic area, habitat quality variables and landscape variables such as current land‐cover categories, forest continuity, forest size and urbanization influenced plant species composition. I also compared how mountain and lowland areas differ in terms of the relative importance of these variables. To determine how landscape configuration affects the distribution of species traits, relationships of traits and species affinity with landscape variables were tested. Results: Among landscape variables, forest continuity, landscape forest cover and distance to nearest settlement altered the vegetation. These variables also influenced the distributions of species traits, i.e. life forms, life strategies, affinity to forest, dispersal modes, seed characteristics, flooding tolerance and Ellenberg indicator values for nitrogen, light, moisture and soil reaction. Nevertheless, physiographic area and habitat quality variables explained more variation in species composition. Landscape variables were more important in lowland areas. Forest continuity affected species composition only in lowlands. Conclusions: Although habitat quality and physiographic area explained more vegetation variability, landscape configuration was also a key factor influencing species composition and distribution of species traits. However, the results are dependent on forest geographical location, with lowland forests being more influenced by landscape variables compared to mountain forests.

East-African mountain forest species often occur in small and isolated populations, whereas species inhabiting the dry lowland savannahs exist in large and interconnected population networks. Taxa with closely related highland and lowland species, such as the East-African White-eye birds, allow testing for the potential effects of the two contrasting distribution patterns, mountain disjunction versus lowland panmixia. In this study, we compare the population genetic and bioacoustic differentiation of two representatives of the genus Zosterops: Zosterops poliogaster is exclusively found in forests at higher elevations; in comparison, Zosterops abyssinicus, only occurs in the dry and warm lowland savannahs. Both species were analysed across a similar geographical scale. Population genetic differentiation was inferred using the same set of 15 polymorphic microsatellite loci for both species. In addition, we quantitatively analyzed bioacoustic traits. Both data sets indicate a strong population differentiation among populations of the highland species, but an absence of differentiation in the lowland species. In addition, the lowland Z. abyssinicus was characterised by a twofold higher genetic diversity than detected for the highland Z. poliogaster. These two contrasting intraspecific population structures may reflect the opposite ecology and distribution of these species: the strong population isolation of Z. poliogaster resulting from long-term restriction to the cool and moist mountain forests at higher elevations has led to strong differentiation among local populations and resulted in a comparatively low level of intraspecific variability. In contrast, population panmixia in the lowland Z. abyssinicus provides a high level of gene flow allowing the maintenance of high genetic diversity and avoiding strong population structuring. These findings need to be considered when planning conservation actions.

This paper summarizes a series of studies on chromosomal geography of the common shrew Sorex araneus L. in Siberia and the Southern Urals. Chromosomal races inhabiting the Southern Urals and the Western Siberian Plain sequentially replace each other in the latitudinal direction. In this region, karyotypes of each two adjacent races differ from each other by a single whole-arm reciprocal translocation. In the Eastern Siberian branch, the neighboring races differ mainly in the number or set of metacentric chromosomes. Analysis of the race distribution in the common shrew in the context of paleophysiology of the glacial period allowed us to reconstruct the sequence of events leading to the establishment of the present-day structure of the species.

The development of male generative organs of the Siberian stone pine clones of different origin was analyzed in the Krasnoyarsk forest-steppe for many years. Geographical and individual variability was described as concerns the number of microstrobils and pollen variability. The beginning of "flowering", abundance of microstrobils, and their regular formation were shown to markedly vary and, all other conditions being equal, be determined by the presence of clones, their hereditary features, and environmental conditions, as well by the influence of stock.

Abstract: The biennial Gentianella austriaca (A. & J. Kern.) Holub, representing a nutrient-poor grassland taxon of low competition power, is becoming rare in the lowlands of eastern Austria due to changes in land use. To estimate effects of isolation and decreasing population sizes, as well as evolutionary relationships, we investigated variation in isozymes and morphological characters within and between seven populations from the mountains, foothills, and lowlands. Additionally, data on reproduction, habitat, germination and population sizes were collected to examine possible causes of variation and differentiation. We found highest genetic diversity (va, vgo) in the lowland and foothill populations, and highest genetic differentiation (Dja, Djgo) (i.e., lowest genetic identity: Nei's I) in the lowland populations. The low diversity of the mountain populations might indicate that they are derived from lowland populations. Surprisingly, highest genetic diversity was found in the smallest population. This indicates that in small remnant populations of taxa with a mixed mating system, genetic diversity might be maintained even after many generations after reducing population size dramatically. We found some relationship between genetic diversity and high fitness (germination success) and (inversely) with seed size. Plant size and reproductive success are negatively correlated with altitude, whereas flower size and seed size seem to be subject to other forces of selection. Combining all morphometric, reproductive and genetic traits, the lowland populations are most strongly differentiated and therefore of highest conservation priority.

Background and Aims

Studies of local floral adaptation in response to geographically divergent pollinators are essential for understanding floral evolution. This study investigated local pollinator adaptation and variation in floral traits in the rewarding orchid Gymnadenia odoratissima, which spans a large altitudinal gradient and thus may depend on different pollinator guilds along this gradient.

Methods

Pollinator communities were assessed and reciprocal transfer experiments were performed between lowland and mountain populations. Differences in floral traits were characterized by measuring floral morphology traits, scent composition, colour and nectar sugar content in lowland and mountain populations.

Key Results

The composition of pollinator communities differed considerably between lowland and mountain populations; flies were only found as pollinators in mountain populations. The reciprocal transfer experiments showed that when lowland plants were transferred to mountain habitats, their reproductive success did not change significantly. However, when mountain plants were moved to the lowlands, their reproductive success decreased significantly. Transfers between populations of the same altitude did not lead to significant changes in reproductive success, disproving the potential for population-specific adaptations. Flower size of lowland plants was greater than for mountain flowers. Lowland plants also had significantly higher relative amounts of aromatic floral volatiles, while the mountain plants had higher relative amounts of other floral volatiles. The floral colour of mountain flowers was significantly lighter compared with the lowland flowers.

Conclusions

Local pollinator adaptation through pollinator attraction was shown in the mountain populations, possibly due to adaptation to pollinating flies. The mountain plants were also observed to receive pollination from a greater diversity of pollinators than the lowland plants. The different floral phenotypes of the altitudinal regions are likely to be the consequence of adaptations to local pollinator guilds.

During Quaternary glaciations, the ranges of Northern Eurasia forest species periodically experienced contraction followed by subsequent re-colonizations in the interglacial intervals. However, unlike the broadleaf trees of temperate forests, taiga species seem not to have retreated fully to southern regions in unfavorable periods and possibly survived at mid-latitudes in multiple refugia. Here, we report a study of genetic variation of three mitochondrial DNA markers in 90 populations of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) located from Eastern Europe to Eastern Siberia. The geographic distribution of seven mitotypes demonstrated the split between western and eastern populations approximately along the 38th meridian. Genetic diversity in the western part was significantly higher than in the eastern one. Five mitotypes were western- and one eastern-specific. One mitotype was common in both regions, but in the eastern part it occurred only in the South Urals and adjacent areas. The geographic structure in the mitotype distribution supports a hypothesis of post-glacial re-colonization of the studied territory from the European and Ural refugia.

The present study aimed to investigate the morphological and genetic differentiation of lowland and montane populations of the Pieris napi species complex in Norway and to make inferences about the subspecific status of Pieris napi adalwinda and Pieris napi napi . We measured 22 morphological characters on 228 individuals from eight populations in Central Norway (20–1100 m a.s.l.). In addition, lowland and mountain animals were reared at a high altitude locality. Half the animals from either locality were reared on mountain plant, and the other half on a lowland plant. Finally, a fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene was sequenced for individuals from Central and South-eastern Norway and Germany. Principal component analysis of morphological characters showed a zone of abrupt change from lowland to mountain morphological character states between populations at 506 m and 730 m a.s.l., respectively. The transplant experiment showed that the morphological differences have a genetic basis and that food plants have no impact on morphology. Limited, but significant, molecular genetic differentiation was found between lowland and mountain animals, but the phylogenetic analysis, however, showed that the lowland form ( P. n. napi ) is paraphyletic and the montane form ( P. n. adalwinda ) is monophyletic. Further study is required before taxonomic recognition can be applied.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 92 , 727–745.
