The size-sex relationship and sexual differences of sixArisaema species native to Japan were investigated. The size-sex relationship showed almost the same pattern in all species. When the plant was small in size, the sex expression was male, and sex expression changed from male to female as the plant grew larger. Male ratios decreased rapidly around a critical size, but this critical size differed from one species to another. Sexual differences were detected in reproductive structures and behavior, although no difference was detected in vegetative structures. The stoutness, longevity and inner tissue of the scape showed remarkable differences between males and females, and this difference was represented most clearly as the size-weight relationship. Earlier initiation of flowering in males was also observed. No difference was found in resource allocation to reproductive structures between male and female plants at the flowering stage. However, a broad variation in the amount of resource allocation to reproductive structures was found at the fruiting stage in female individuals, which was attributed to differences in the setting rate of mature fruits.  相似文献

The distribution of a species is determined by a set of ecological correlates (biotic and abiotic factors) and historical phenomena that define and constrain its ecological niche. By examining the geographical projection of the ecological niche, it is possible to identify areas that are suitable for the species ecologically but that are not actually inhabited. Previous studies have used such discords to anticipate the existence of undescribed species; the absence of species may also result from historical barriers that have prevented colonization of the area. Thus, discords between potential and realized niches of a species may result from aspects of the species’s biology (e.g. lack of dispersal ability, specific habitat requirements) or from barriers to dispersal. In this study, we developed ecological niche models of the five Nearctic species of wood‐feeding cockroaches in the genus Cryptocercus. One species, C. clevelandi, occurs in the western USA and four (C. darwini, C. garciai, C. punctulatus, C. wrighti) are distributed in the Appalachian Mountains in the eastern USA. In general, modelled niches for all species showed ecological restriction relative to the total range of available conditions. Niche models for the eastern USA species predicted the geographical distributions of the other eastern USA species, with the exception of C. garciai, suggesting general overall conservatism in ecological characteristics. Some interspecific differences in modelled niches were also apparent. In general, C. clevelandi was predicted to occupy cooler and drier areas relative to the eastern USA species; among the eastern USA species, C. darwini and C. garciai were predicted to inhabit warmer areas relative to C. punctulatus and C. wrighti. Interspecific differences and similarities were consistent with the phylogenetic relationships among Cryptocercus species previously reported. © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2007, 90 , 457–466.  相似文献

Experiments conducted in West Java, Indonesia investigated the developmental biology and reproductive behavior of two sympatric soybean pod borers, Etiella zinckenella Treitschke and E. hobsoni Butler (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). It was determined that: (1) significant interspecific differences occurred between the egg, larval, pupal and total egg-to-adult developmental periods of laboratory raised E. zinckenella and E. hobsoni; (2) the pre-pupal and total egg-to-adult development periods of female E. zinckenella were significantly shorter than for males; (3) the longevity of virgin female E. zinckenella was significantly longer than that of virgin males, or virgin male and female E. hobsoni; (4) interspecific differences occurred in the female: male sex-ratios of laboratory raised adults; (5) peak mating for both species occurred on the second night after eclosion; (6) interspecific differences occurred in the temporal distribution of calling and mating behaviors; (7) repeated mating was observed for both species at a very low frequency; (8) interspecific mating did not occur; (9) female E. zinckenella were significantly more fecund than E. hobsoni; (10) the duration in copulo of E. zinckenella was significantly longer than that of E. hobsoni; and (11) wingtraps baited with virgin females caught only conspecific males, and reduced numbers of males were captured in traps simultaneously baited with virgin females of both species. This study demonstrates distinct biological differences and reproductive isolation between the two Etiella spp.  相似文献

The morphological differences in female genitalia within and between species are little studied and poorly understood, yet understanding patterns of variation in female genitalia can provide insights into mechanisms of genital evolution. The present study aimed to explore the patterns of intraspecific and interspecific variation in female genitalia in two sister taxa of watersnake (Nerodia sipedon and Nerodia fasciata) that have similar genital shape. We used a geometric morphometric (GM) approach to study variation in shape of the vagina between and within two sister species. We examined genital shape in female watersnakes ranging from small, sexually immature females to large reproductive females that had recently given birth. We found that shape variation of genitalia is strongly correlated with body size, where larger but not smaller females have a bifurcation in the vagina. However, we also found significant shape variation in the structure of the vagina between the two species, where N. fasciata has narrower genitalia with more prominent bifurcation, whereas N. sipedon has wider genitalia with less marked bifurcation. Using GM allowed us to detect significant differences in genital shape that were not apparent upon visual examination alone, suggesting that shape variation in female genitalia may be greater than previously assumed. Additional study of morphological differences in male reproductive organs for these species would help to determine whether there has been genital co‐evolution, and potentially mechanical reproductive isolation, in these two closely‐related and occasionally sympatric species. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2014, 111, 183–191.  相似文献

Lengths, widths and volumes of eggs from 11 species of Drosophila whose genomes have been fully sequenced exhibit significant variation that is not explained by their phylogenetic relationships. Furthermore, egg size differences are unrelated to embryonic development time in these species. In addition, two of the species, Drosophila sechellia and, to a lesser degree, D. yakuba, both ecological specialists, exhibit ovoviviparity, suggesting that female control over oviposition in these species differs from what is observed in D. melanogaster. The interspecific differences in these reproductive characters, coupled with the availability of whole genome sequences for each, provide an unprecedented opportunity to examine their evolution.  相似文献

Summary Attempts at the reciprocal cross between Petunia parodii and P. inflata using standard emasculation and pollination techniques failed. Limited pollen tube growth down the style in reciprocal crosses led to reproductive isolation between the self-compatible P. parodii and self-incompatible P. inflata. The interspecific hybrid was successfully produced by bud-pollination of P. parodii with P. inflata as the male parent in 22 percent of attempts, but not in the opposite direction. In vitro pollination of P. parodii ovaries with P. inflata pollen also produced hybrids. The small size of the ovary made it technically impossible to use P. inflata as the female parent for in vitro pollination. The interspecific hybrids were intermediate, as compared to the two parents, for six of the seven plant and flower characters measured. Furthermore, the hybrids had high pollen fertility, set abundant seed upon self-pollination, and readily inter-crossed with the parental species. The results are consistent with a high degree of chromosomal homology in the parental species and with minor genetic divergency leading to reproductive isolation that is pre-zygotic in nature. Overcoming the barriers to cross-incompatibility by practical techniques resulted in fertile interspecific hybrids that segregated for parental characters. The potential value of employing the parental species in somatic hybridization experiments is discussed.Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station Journal Article No. 8404  相似文献

We examined the effects of floral organ size on female reproductive success in self-incompatibleErythronium japonicum. We measured tepal size and anther-stigma separation and investigated the relationship between these measurements and fruiting and seeding success. We found that tepal length was positively correlated with fruiting success and the number of seeds per fruit This suggests that pollinator attraction is affected by tepal length in f.japonicum and that the number of pollinator visits affects female reproductive success. Anther-stigma separation was the most variable floral trait measured and was not correlated with either fruiting or seeding success in this species, suggesting that the proportion of outcross pollen deposited on stigmas by pollinators does not increase with anther-stigma separation. This is inconsistent with a previous report onEtyyhtonium. grandiflorum. Pollinator size might explain this interspecific difference in the effect of anther-stigma separation on female reproductive success.  相似文献

Reproductive ecology of five pipefish species in one eelgrass meadow   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Synopsis Synopsis Pipefishes have rarely been watched in the wild and have never before been followed in their common seagrass habitats. This study explores the reproductive ecology of five species of pipefishes living in a Swedish eelgrass meadow during parts of four breeding seasons, tagging four of the species. Pipefish are remarkable for their specialised paternal care: only males aerate, osmoregulate and nourish the developing embryos. Two of the species (Entelurus aequoreus andNerophis ophidion) have simple ventral gluing of eggs on the trunk while three species (Syngnathus acus, S. rostellatus andS. typhle) have fully enclosed brood pouches on their tails. Males of the former species receive eggs from one female while males of the genusSyngnathus receive partial clutches from several females. Sex ratios of adults on the site differed from equal to male-biased to female-biased, according to species.S. typhle were most numerous and were resighted most often. They were present throughout the breeding season whereas there were temporal shifts in the presence of the other species on the meadow and in some sex ratios. Most species occurred in the deeper, denser part of the meadow but there was some habitat separation by species and sex. All species tended to stay low in the eelgrass, primarily coming up above the eelgrass to display and mate. No species showed site fidelity either to a home range or to the meadow, withE. aequoreus adults spending least time on the meadow. Sexual size dimorphism differed: males were larger inS. rostellatus, the same size inS acus and smaller in the other species. Although the species overlap in habitat requirements and breeding season, the only observed interspecific interactions were abortive courtships betweenSyngnathus species.  相似文献

It is a widespread notion that in arthropods female reproductive output is strongly affected by female size. In butterflies egg size scales positively with female size across species, suggesting a constraint imposed by maternal size. However, in intraspecific comparisons body size often explains only a minor part of the variation in progeny size. We here include representatives of various butterfly families to test the generality of this phenomenon across butterflies. Phenotypic correlations between egg and maternal body size were inconsistent across species: correlations were non-significant for Pararge aegeria and Lycaena tityrus, significantly positive for Papilio machaon, significantly negative for Araschnia levana, and contradictory for Pieris napi. Thus, there was no general pattern linking egg size to maternal size, e.g., caused by an allometric relationship. Consequently, there was at best limited evidence for maternal size acting as a morphological constraint on egg size within butterfly species. Realized fecundity depended on maternal size in P. napi and A. levana, but not in P. aegeria, suggesting that maternal size may affect egg number more strongly than egg size. Yet, variation in fecundity was primarily explained by variation in longevity as is expected for income breeders. Heritability estimates across species were rather similar for pupal mass (ranging between 0.14 and 0.19), but more variable for egg size (0.17–0.31).  相似文献

Character displacement in Hydrobia   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2

Summary Fenchel's study of size variation in Hydrobiid snails in the Limfjord, Denmark, provides one of the most convincing cases of ecological character displacement available. In order to assess the generality of the phenomena within the Hydrobia genus, allopatric and sympatric Hydrobia ventrosa, H. neglecta and H. ulvae were collected from 24 coastal sites around Eastern England in July and October, 1982. Shell heights of 5,850 snails from 55 samples were recorded. These data were analysed for intraspecific allopatric-sympatric, and interspecific height differences. Such differences were not significant for H. ventrosa/H. neglecta, but the species exhibited parallel variation at sympatric sites. H. ventrosa/H. ulvae showed only significant interspecific differences, but in both allopatry and sympatry. The pattern of mean size variation for these species resembles that in the Limfjord. However the statistical analyses fail to provide support for character displacement. Differences in character states attributed to the process of character displacement may result from a number of other causes. Environmental conditions at sympatric and allopatric sites may act differentially on the heights of H. ulvae and H. ventrosa. The conditions that prevail at sympatric H. ulvae sites appear to lead to increased size in this species irrespective of the presence of H. ventrosa.  相似文献

Summary The amount of DNA per haploid genome, the C-value, is often directly correlated with nuclear and cell volume, but inversely correlated with cell replication rate. Also, rates of cellular growth sometimes appear to be correlated with organismal developmental rates and life history patterns. Among vertebrates, salamanders exhibit the greatest variation in genome size. In the present study we have examined interspecific and intraspecific variation in blood cell DNA levels in the genus Desmognathus, which shows greater variation in life history traits than any other salamander genus. Specimens of Desmognathus quadramaculatus, D. Monticola, D. ochrophaeus and D. wrighti were collected from nature at two localities in the southern Appalachian Mountains. Estimates of genome size in pg of DNA were obtained from blood smears by DNA-Feulgen cytophotometry, using erythrocyte nuclei of Xenopus laevis as an internal reference standard of 6.35 pg DNA per cell. C-values of Desmognathus are the smallest in the order Caudata. Although significant variation in DNA levels was found among the four species, the differences were small, and do not support previously proposed relationships between C-value and life-history variation.  相似文献

Asynchrony in reproductive behavior may contribute to reproductive isolation among sympatric species. While the 38 cryptic species of the genus Laupala are primarily distinguished on the basis of variation in pulse rate of male calling songs, additional phenotypes, such as asynchrony in reproductive behavior, may contribute to reproductive isolation in this genus. Here we document similarities and differences in the diel timing of two reproductive behaviors, male singing activity and insemination events. Asynchrony in the diel timing of male singing behavior was observed between two sympatric species, Laupala cerasina and Laupala paranigra, in the field. An interpopulational comparison within L. cerasina did not reveal variation in diel behavior patterns of singing between two locations. Asynchrony in the timing of copulation and sperm transfer between L. cerasina and L. paranigra was documented in the laboratory. The observed pattern of asynchrony in both the field and laboratory could have arisen in a number of ways. One possibility is that species diverged in sympatry because of interspecific interactions, producing a pattern of reproductive character displacement. Alternatively, the observed asynchrony in reproductive behavior may have played a role in the process of community assembly within this recently diverged cricket genus. The presence of interspecific variation and the absence of intraspecific variation revealed by our study do not support a pattern of reproductive character displacement for diel reproductive behavior, suggesting that the differences seen between species were not caused by recent species interactions.  相似文献

Individual variation in two species of host plants (thistle,Cirsium kamtschaticum, and blue cohosh,Caulophyllum robustum) of the herbivorous ladybird beetleEpilachna pustulosa was examined under laboratory conditions for their acceptability to adult beetles as a food resource, for adult preference and for larval performance. When clones of these plants were subjected to non-choice tests using posthibernating female beetles, there was found to be significant intraspecific variation among clones in terms of their acceptability, but interspecific variation was not detected. Significant intraspecific as well as interspecific variation were frequently detected in the two host plants when clones of these plants were subjected to choice tests using posthibernating female beetles; the magnitude of interspecific plant variation for beetle preference is not necessarily larger than that of intraspecific plant variation. Individual variation across plant species with respect to beetle larval performance was also significant. A positive correlation between adult preference and larval performance is suggested across the two taxonomically remote host plant species, thistle and blue cohosh, although this needs further investigation.  相似文献

The present communication deals with 2C nuclear genome size variation in a fairly small genus Guizotia. Twenty-four accessions belonging to six species, out of seven known, were analysed in order to elucidate the extent of DNA variation both at an intra—as well as interspecific level. At the intraspecific level none of the species exhibited significant differences in their genome size. Between the species, the 2C DNA amounts ranged from 3.61 pg in G. reptans to 11.37 pg in G. zavattarii; over three-fold DNA variation is evident. Apparently these interspecific DNA differences have been achieved independent of the numerical chromosomal change(s), as all the Guizotias share a common chromosome number 2n=2x=30. The cultivated oilseed crop, G. abyssinica (7.57 pg), has accommodated nearly 78% extra DNA in its chromosome complement during the evolutionary time scale of its origin and domestication from the wild progenitor G. schimperi (4.25 pg). The extent of genomic DNA difference(s) between the species has been discussed in the light of their interrelationships and diversity.  相似文献

We investigated intra- and interspecific differences in life history and reproductive parameters in bonobos (Pan paniscus) and chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes). We compare the parameters of wild and captive females in order to shed light on the influence of habitat or specific differences or both on reproduction. We present new and additional information on reproductive parameters from captive bonobos and chimpanzees. Captive chimpanzees birth more live offspring and have a shorter interbirth interval, but experience higher infant mortality than captive bonobos. Although captive bonobo females tend to start reproduction at a younger age than chimpanzees, this is effectively only so for wild-born females of both species. Ultimately both species reach the same rate of production of offspring surviving to 5 yr. These results contrast with data from the wild. Wild bonobos tend to have higher reproductive success, a higher fertility rate and a shorter interbirth interval than wild chimpanzees. Reproduction is similar for wild and captive bonobos, which suggests that they are producing at their maximum under both conditions. Overall captive chimpanzees perform better than their wild conspecifics, probably because of lower feeding competition. Infant survival is the only specific difference not affected by captivity. Bonobo infants survive better, which suggests that chimpanzee infants are more at risk. We argue that the interspecific variation in reproductive parameters in captivity is related to the different influence of captivity on reproduction and different pressures of external sources of infant and juvenile mortality.  相似文献

To investigate the cause of variation in the interspecific crossability of Brassica napus, three different genotypes were studied in respect of their reproductive behavior after pollination with B. juncea. There were great differences among maternal genotypes in allowing foreign pollen to germinate on and penetrate into their stigmas, leading to a wide diversity of interspecific fertilization. The division of the hybrid primary endosperm nucleus and zygote appeared normal in all combinations of crosses. While the abundant free nuclei of the endosperm developed properly and never became cellular, the embryos degenerated as early as 10 days after pollination when the cultivar Rucabo, which had the highest fertilization record with species of B. juncea, was involved. When 81007 was used as female parent, the endosperm grew a little but the embryo halted at the heart-torpedo stage. Lack of nourishment might be responsible for the observed embryo abortion. Among the sic hybrid combinations, the cross 84014A x Changyang hunagjie was the only one where endosperm tissue was observable and an abnormal embryo occurred prior to cellular endosperm formation. Apart from the three typical embryological features, significant variation was also demonstrated among each of the cross combinations. Genetic diversity appears to exist not only between varieties, but also within cultivars. In addition, methods for developing interspecific crossable lines are discussed.  相似文献

I present the 6- year reproductive histories of three wild female siamang (Hylobates syndactylus)and four white-handed gibbons (Hylobates lar)at the Ketambe Research Station (Sumatra, Indonesia). Reproductive output varied considerably among females. Two females failed to gestate: both were nulliparous young adult H. lar,one of which remained unpaired for 4 years after dispersing from her group, while the other lost her recently acquired mate to another female. Only one- (a white-handed gibbon)- gave birth more than once, yielding interbirth intervals of 22 and 31 months. Pair bond stability or reduced interspecific feeding competition or both factors may have contributed to the brevity of these intervals. The other females- one H. lar,and three H. syndactylus-each gave birth once, suggesting minimum interbirth intervals exceeding 4–5 years (H. lar)and 3 years (H. syndactylus)in these individuals. Even given the pronounced variation observed among H. lar, these data suggest that interbirth intervals may often exceed the 2- to 3- year interval commonly attributed to these two species. Sources of reproductive failure were 1) maternal abandonment of the neonate due to impaired ability to provide maternal care (H. syndactylus,),(2) premature or stillbirth (H. syndactylus,),and (3) pregnancy termination (H. lar). These data and a review of information on longevity and age at menarche suggest that the actual lifetime reproductive output of a siamang or white-handed gibbon female may often fall far short of the 10 offspring/lifetime originally proposed for these species. Indeed, females may rear as few as five offspring to weaning in a lifetime, which is a figure reminiscent of the reproductive potential of some pongids. Finally, variance in female reproductive success is higher than expected in these monogamous species, which suggests that females (and males) are under strong selective pressure to exert mate choice, possibly through acquisition of (new) mates and extrapair copulations. Future research must clarify the availability of opportunities for paired adults to engage in these sociosexual behaviors.  相似文献
