We consider one- and two-dimensional minimal models of a phytoplankton–zooplankton dynamical system subject to boundary forced oscillations in the prey. 1. Host discrimination by Aphidius rhopalosiphi (De Stefani Perez) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) was first studied on the grain aphid Sitobion avenae (Fabricius) (Homoptera: Aphididae). Females tended to avoid oviposition in hosts parasitised 3 h earlier. No evidence of host discrimination ability on freshly parasitised hosts was suggested, however, and ovipositional experience had no effect on host discrimination. 2. The effects of host discrimination ability on the exploitation strategy of patches containing different proportions of unparasitised hosts and hosts parasitised for 3 h were studied. Females spent less time on patches with a higher proportion of parasitised hosts, reflecting the females' ability to perceive the potential profitability of the patch. This ability may be based on the nature of the hosts encountered (unparasitised or parasitised). 3. Incomplete exploitation of unparasitised hosts was also observed. It seems that this partial exploitation is related to the inability of A. rhopalosiphi to recognise freshly parasitised hosts. As a female may experience a risk of self‐superparasitism during patch depletion, this could promote early departure from incompletely exploited patches. 4. The effect of previous experience on the patch exploitation strategy was also assessed. Females were tested twice on two patches of the same quality. Results suggested that the experience acquired during a previous visit led the females to leave the patch sooner and to lay fewer eggs in parasitised hosts. 5. Patch exploitation strategy may therefore be the result of different factors such as host discrimination and experience. The evolutionary consequences of the results are discussed.  相似文献

We examined a role for DNA polymerase β (Pol β) in mammalian long patch base excision repair (LP BER). Although a role for Pol β is well known in single-nucleotide BER, information on this enzyme in the context of LP BER has been limited. To examine the question of Pol β involvement in LP BER, we made use of nucleotide excision repair-deficient human XPA cells expressing UVDE (XPA-UVDE), which introduces a nick directly 5′ to the cyclobutane pyrimidine dimer or 6-4 photoproduct, leaving ends with 3′-OH and 5′-phosphorylated UV lesion. We observed recruitment of GFP-fused Pol β to focal sites of nuclear UV irradiation, consistent with a role of Pol β in repair of UV-induced photoproducts adjacent to a strand break. This was the first evidence of Pol β recruitment in LP BER in vivo. In cell extract, a 5′-blocked oligodeoxynucleotide substrate containing a nicked 5′-cyclobutane pyrimidine dimer was repaired by Pol β-dependent LP BER. We also demonstrated Pol β involvement in LP BER by making use of mouse cells that are double null for XPA and Pol β. These results were extended by experiments with oligodeoxynucleotide substrates and purified human Pol β.  相似文献

A nested pattern occurs whenever the species observed in depauperate habitat patches are a subset of those found in more species‐rich patches. Ecologists have documented many instances of nestedness caused by population‐level processes such as colonization and extinction at biogeographic scales. However, few researchers have examined whether nestedness may exist at fine scales due to the ways in which individual organisms discriminate among potential habitat patches. In 1999, we experimentally fragmented an old‐field habitat into patches of varying size to test whether nestedness could exist on a fine spatial scale. Five treatments of differing patch size were replicated five times in a Latin square design by selectively mowing 15×15 m2 plots within an old‐field (patch areas: 225, 180, 135, 90, and 45 m2). Specifically, we tested whether butterflies foraging within a network of patches differing in area conformed to a nested subset structure. We also classified species according to (1) their flight height while foraging (high or low), and (2) their adult habitat breadth (ubiquitous, general, or restricted) to determine whether nestedness could be explained by difference in species’ tendency to discriminate among patches differing in area.
We found significant evidence that a community of foraging Lepidoptera conformed to a nested subset structure based on the difference between the observed nestedness within the butterfly community and the nestedness obtained from randomly generated species presence/absence matrices. Poisson regression analyses demonstrated that high‐flying, habitat‐restricted species avoided the smallest patches (90 and 45 m2) in favor of larger remnants, whereas low‐flying, habitat generalists used all patch sizes. Thus, our study is one of the first to demonstrate that nestedness among species subsets can be observed at fine spatial scales (within a single 1.5 hectare field) and may be maintained by species behavioral differences: discriminating species (i.e. high‐flying, habitat restricted) avoided the smallest patches, and less discriminating species (i.e. low‐flying, ubiquitous) were distributed throughout the field without regard to patch size. Our results also suggest that nestedness should be viewed as yet another scalar pattern in ecology, generated by variation in patch use by individuals at fine‐scales as well as the more traditionally invoked processes of extinction and colonization of species at broad‐scales.  相似文献

Humans modify their environments in ways that significantly transform the earth's ecosystems. 1 - 3 Recent research suggests that such niche‐constructing behaviors are not passive human responses to environmental variation, but instead should be seen as active and intentional management of the environment. 4 - 10 Although such research is useful in highlighting the interactive dynamics between humans and their natural world, the niche‐construction framework, as currently applied, fails to explain why people would decide to modify their environments in the first place. 11 - 13 To help resolve this problem, we use a model of technological intensification 14 , 15 to analyze the cost‐benefit trade‐offs associated with niche construction as a form of patch investment. We use this model to assess the costs and benefits of three paradigmatic cases of intentional niche construction in Western North America: the application of fire in acorn groves, the manufacture of fishing weirs, and the adoption of maize agriculture. Intensification models predict that investing in patch modification (niche construction) only provides a net benefit when the amount of resources needed crosses a critical threshold that makes the initial investment worthwhile. From this, it follows that low‐cost investments, such as burning in oak groves, should be quite common, while more costly investments, such as maize agriculture, should be less common and depend on the alternatives available in the local environment. We examine how patterns of mobility, 16 risk management, 17 territoriality, 12 and private property 18 also co‐evolve with the costs and benefits of niche construction. This approach illustrates that explaining niche‐constructing behavior requires understanding the economic trade‐offs involved in patch investment. Integrating concepts from niche construction and technological intensification models within a behavioral ecological framework provides insights into the coevolution and active feedback between adaptive behaviors and environmental change across human history.  相似文献

Summary To investigate the voltage dependence of the Na/K pump, current-voltage relations were determined in prophasearrested oocytes ofXenopus laevis. All solutions contained 5mm Ba2– and 20mm tetraethylammonium (TEA) to block K channels. If. in addition, the Na+/K+ pump is blocked by ouabain, K+-sensitive currents no larger than 50 nA/cm2 remain. Reductions in steady-state current (on the order of 700 nA/cm2) produced by 50 m ouabain or dihydro-ouabain or by K+ removal, therefore, primarily represent current generated by the Na/K pump. In Na-free solution containing 5mm K+, Na+/K+ pump current is relatively voltage independent over the potential range from –160 to +40 mV. If external [K+] is reduced below 0.5mm, negative slopes are observed over this entire voltage range. Similar results are seen in Na+- and Ca2+-free solutions in the presence of 2mm Ni2+, an experimental condition designed to prevent Na+/Ca2+ exchange. The occurrence of a negative slope can be explained by the voltage dependence of the apparent affinity for activation of the Na+/K+ pump by external K+, consistent with the existence of an external ion well for K binding. In 90mm Na+, 5mm K+ solution, Na+/K+ pump current-voltage curves at negative membrane potentials have a positive slope and can be described by a monotonically increasing sigmoidal function. At an extracellular [K+] of 1.3mm, a negative slope was observed at positive potentials. These findings suggest that in addition to a voltage-dependent step associated with Na+ translocation, a second voltage-dependent step that is dependent on external [K+], possibly external K+ binding, participates in the overall reaction mechanism of the Na+/K+ pump.  相似文献

The endangered grand skink (Oligosoma grande) is a New?Zealand endemic lizard that persists as metapopulations occupying rock patches within matrices of mixed native vegetation and modified agricultural pasture. Parameterisation of metapopulation models applied in conservation biology assumes complete detectability of target species. Incomplete detectability may result in underestimates of occupancy and biased estimates of extinction and colonisation rates. Recent techniques use multiple surveys of sampling sites to model detectability and derive robust estimates of occupancy, and extinction and colonisation rates. Five years (1998?2002) of presence/absence survey data were analysed to determine grand skink site occupancy and estimate colonisation and extinction rates. Mean site occupancy was 0.38 (SE 0.07), compared with a na?ve estimate of 0.29. Occupancy, extinction and colonisation probabilities were habitat specific, varying according to tussock or a modified pasture matrix. Colonisation probability was higher in tussock than in pasture, whereas extinction probability was higher in pasture. Derived model-averaged estimates showed that occupancy was higher in tussock (range 0.515(0.02) ? 0.532 (0.02)) than in pasture (range 0.226 (0.03) ? 0.234 (0.01)), with a slight trend of decline in pasture areas and increase in tussock areas over time, with the result that overall occupancy has been reasonably static over the 5 years. Detectability varied interannually, ranging from 0.63 to 0.83. The difference between the na?ve occupancy estimate and the model-averaged estimate highlights the importance of deriving robust estimates of metapopulation parameters that take incomplete detectability into account. Unbiased estimates allow managers to predict and track responses to management interventions.  相似文献

In most arid ecosystems, the vegetation is organized into two‐phase mosaics, where high‐cover vegetation patches are interspersed in a matrix of low plant cover. We studied the role of the biotic interaction balance (competition/facilitation) between shrubs and grasses as a driver of patch dynamics and maintenance of two‐phase vegetation mosaics. Following Watt's seminal model, we conducted two field experiments in which we manipulated different vegetation patches to obtain the different stages along the building and degradation dynamics of high‐cover patches. In addition we applied two possible belowground competition treatments (natural and experimentally reduced). We measured plant variables (emergence, survival, height, flower culms) on grass seedlings and transplants. We integrated all plant measurements into a single positive and negative component, to calculate the net balance along three stages of the patch dynamics proposed. The net biotic interaction balance was negative during the early and mature stages of high‐cover patches because the average standardized effect from the negative component was below ?0.44, while the positive component was not different from zero. However, the net biotic interaction balance was positive during the degraded stages of high‐cover patches because the negative average component was ?0.37, while the positive component reached 0.58. The negative net effects during early and mature stages of high‐cover patches can be explained by the occurrence of wet years, because high rainfalls hide the aboveground facilitation. Our findings point out the importance of complementary mechanisms to the interaction balance in the mosaic maintenance (e.g. trapping of seeds by shrubs) according to the inter‐annual rainfall variability.  相似文献

In metapopulations of butterflies inhabiting transient forest openings, the dynamic character of biotopes prevents unequivocal delimitation of habitat patches, complicating analyses of inter-patch dispersal. We analyse mobility of one such metapopulation, using mark-recapture data on an endangered butterfly, the scarce fritillary Euphydryas maturna , at its last site in the Czech Republic. The butterfly inhabits woodland clearings, its population numbered 190 individuals in 2002. We modelled movements in eight habitat patchworks delimited according to different criteria and superimposed over the forest, using the Virtual Migration model. Resulting mobility parameters were generally robust against patchwork definitions, the main distinction was between patchworks based on presence of adults and consisting of small patches and patchworks based on distributions of larval nests and consisting of large patches. Emigration constant decreased towards the latter, whereas males suffered higher migration mortality than females in the former. Patchworks delimited according to presence of adults performed better than patchworks based on distribution of larval nests. A comparison of our parameters with those found for the species in Finland showed that the Czech butterflies were more prone to leave individual patches and suffered higher migration mortality, which combined into considerably shorter survival. We conclude that transferring dispersal parameters among different regions and populations is more risky than using less suitable definitions of habitat patches within single region.  相似文献

To evaluate the dependence of the differentiation of the follicle-associated epithelium (FAE) on the presence of follicular B-cells, the FAE of ileal Peyers patch follicles was examined in B-cell-depleted fetal lambs. The FAE of these rudimentary follicles, which are devoid of lymphocytes, showed normal differentiation, including carbonic anhydrase reactivity and ultrastructural characteristics of transcytosis, extensive interdigitation of the lateral plasma membrane and the shedding of membrane-bounded particles, approximately 50 nm in size, resembling exosomes. These 50-nm membrane-bounded particles were abundant in the extracellular space of the epithelium and the dome but no particles were found in the rudimentary follicles. This study confirms that the rudimentary follicles consist of clusters of follicular dendritic cells. Our findings suggest that the differentiation of FAE of ileal Peyers patch and the production of the 50-nm particles constitute features that appear to be independent of B-cells. Facultative shifts in nesting habitat selection in response to perceived predation risk may allow animals to increase the survival probability of sessile offspring. Previous studies on this behavioral strategy have primarily focused on single attributes, such as the distance moved or changes in nesting substrate. However, nest site choice often encompasses multiple habitat elements at both the nest site and nest patch scales. We studied the within-season re-nesting strategy of a multi-brooded songbird, the Brewer’s sparrow (Spizella breweri), to determine whether pairs utilized a “win-stay, lose-switch” decision rule with respect to inter-nest distance, nest substrate and/or nest patch characteristics in response to previous nest fate. Pairs moved sequential nest sites slightly farther following nest predation versus success. When inter-nest distance was controlled, however, pairs changed nest patch attributes (shrub height, potential nest shrub density) associated with probability of nest predation to a greater extent following nest predation than success. The strategy appeared to be adaptive; daily nest survival probability for previously depredated pairs increased with greater Euclidian habitat distances between attempts, whereas previously successful pairs were more likely to fledge second attempts when nest sites were similar to those of previous attempts. Our results suggest that nesting birds can use prior information and within-season plasticity in response to nest predation to increase re-nesting success, which may be a critical behavioral strategy within complex nest predator environments. Re-nesting site selection strategies also appeared to integrate multiple habitat components and inter-nest distances. The consideration of such proximate, facultative responses to predation risk may clarify often unexplained variation in habitat preferences and requirements.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Successive vascular cambia are involved in the secondary growth of at least 200 woody species from >30 plant families. In the mangrove Avicennia these successive cambia are organized in patches, creating stems with non-concentric xylem tissue surrounded by internal phloem tissue. Little is known about radial growth and tree stem dynamics in trees with this type of anatomy. This study aims to (1) clarify the process of secondary growth of Avicennia trees by studying its patchiness; and (2) study the radial increment of Avicennia stems, both temporary and permanent, in relation to local climatic and environmental conditions. A test is made of the hypothesis that patchy radial growth and stem dynamics enable Avicennia trees to better survive conditions of extreme physiological drought.

Methods

Stem variations were monitored by automatic point dendrometers at four different positions around and along the stem of two Avicennia marina trees in the mangrove forest of Gazi Bay (Kenya) during 1 year.

Key Results

Patchiness was found in the radial growth and shrinkage and swelling patterns of Avicennia stems. It was, however, potentially rather than systematically present, i.e. stems reacted either concentrically or patchily to environment triggers, and it was fresh water availability and not tidal inundation that affected radial increment.

Conclusions

It is concluded that the ability to develop successive cambia in a patchy way enables Avicennia trees to adapt to changes in the prevailing environmental conditions, enhancing its survival in the highly dynamic mangrove environment. Limited water could be used in a more directive way, investing all the attainable resources in only some locations of the tree stem so that at least at these locations there is enough water to, for example, overcome vessel embolisms or create new cells. As these locations change with time, the overall functioning of the tree can be maintained.  相似文献

Quantitative microscopy is a valuable tool for inferring molecular mechanisms of cellular processes such as clathrin-mediated endocytosis, but, for quantitative microscopy to reach its potential, both data collection and analysis needed improvement. We introduce new tools to track and count endocytic patches in fission yeast to increase the quality of the data extracted from quantitative microscopy movies. We present a universal method to achieve “temporal superresolution” by aligning temporal data sets with higher temporal resolution than the measurement intervals. These methods allowed us to extract new information about endocytic actin patches in wild-type cells from measurements of the fluorescence of fimbrin-mEGFP. We show that the time course of actin assembly and disassembly varies <600 ms between patches. Actin polymerizes during vesicle formation, but we show that polymerization does not participate in vesicle movement other than to limit the complex diffusive motions of newly formed endocytic vesicles, which move faster as the surrounding actin meshwork decreases in size over time. Our methods also show that the number of patches in fission yeast is proportional to cell length and that the variability in the repartition of patches between the tips of interphase cells has been underestimated.  相似文献

We compared root responses to spatial heterogeneity of Zn and Ni in Thlaspi caerulescens J. and C. Presl from normal (NM plants) and metalliferous soil (M plants). We investigated whether the strong metal accumulation capacity of NM plants (compared to M plants) was related to a greater capacity of roots to grow towards metal-enriched soil compartments. Two similar experiments were conducted in summer (slow growth) and spring (high growth), respectively. Our study is the first to show that NM plants of T. caerulescens have the ability to allocate more roots in the Zn-enriched compartment of soil. However, the positive response to Zn by roots of NM plants does not explain their higher Zn accumulation capacity as M plants express a similar level of root allocation in Zn-enriched compartment of soil. In M plants, root response to the Zn-rich compartment appears to be more susceptible to variations in growth conditions. Preferential root allocation in Ni-enriched compartment was consistently found in M plants only, suggesting that Ni supply is critical in their native metalliferous soil. Our study also illustrates bias in the interpretation of root allocation studies using two dimensional boxes, as interferences between root response to metal and root chirality have been highlighted.  相似文献

Synopsis The structure of assemblages of fish on small patch reefs was experimentally investigated by totally denuding three experimental reefs, and following their recovery and concomitant changes in three control reefs by subsequent visual censusing. Experimental treatment had no significant effect on the number of fish or species subsequently present, nor on the faunal composition of the assemblages. However, all assemblages, both control and experimental, exhibited significant change in structure through the 28 month period they were followed. Such assemblages thus appear to have low constancy, or stability, but high resilience. The results conform to those of previous small-scale, or artificial reef studies, and are compatible with a view emphasising the role of variability in recruitment in determining the structure of reef fish assemblages.  相似文献

In arid and semiarid regions, variations in “islands of fertility” accompanied by discontinuous vegetation is frequently observed. However, the effects of vegetation patches on soil, including the influence of canopy size, are not fully understood, particularly under conditions of severe grazing. We examined the effects of patches of mound-forming shrub, Caragana microphylla, and the plant’s canopy size on these islands of fertility in a heavily grazed Mongolian grassland. In 11 patches with various canopy sizes (32.5–180 cm in diameter), we compared the chemical properties of soils among three microsites: Mound, Below, and Around, which were inside, below, and outside of C. microphylla mounds, respectively. Total carbon (C) and most essential elements for the plants were more concentrated in Mound, but total nitrogen (N) and nonlimiting elements, such as exchangeable sodium (Na), did not significantly differ among microsites. Larger canopies more strongly affected the enrichment of total C and most essential elements, including total N, in Mound. These results suggest that C. microphylla patches substantially enrich total C and most essential elements and that the extent of enrichment was intensified with canopy size. However, under severe grazing, total N may be relatively more affected by the redistribution of resources through grazing, particularly when the canopy size is small.  相似文献

The mechanisms that structure plant diversity and generate long-range correlated spatial patterns have important implications for the conservation of fragmented landscapes. The ability to disperse and persist influences a plant species’ capacity for spatial organization, which can play a critical role in structuring plant diversity in metacommunities. This study examined the spatial patterns of species diversity within a network of patches in Cabo de Gata Natural Park, southeastern Spain. The objectives were to understand how the spatial heterogeneity of species composition (beta diversity) varies in a structured landscape, and how the long-range spatial autocorrelation of plant species is affected by the spatial configuration of patches.The mechanisms underlying the spatial distribution of plants acted at two scales. Between patches, spatial variation in species distributions was greater than that expected based on spatial randomization, which indicated that movement among patches was restricted. Within patches, diffusion processes reduced spatial variability in species distributions, and the effect was more prominent in large patches. Small patch size negatively influenced the long-range spatial autocorrelation of characteristic species, whereas inter-patch distance had a stronger effect on species frequency than it had on the disruption of spatial organized patterns.The long-range spatial autocorrelation was evaluated based on the dispersal abilities of the species. Among the 106 species evaluated, 39% of the woody species, 17% of the forbs, and 12% of the grasses exhibited disrupted long-range spatial autocorrelation where patches were small. The species that are more vulnerable to the effects of fragmentation tended to be those that have restricted dispersal, such as those that have short-range dispersal (atelechoric), e.g., Phlomis purpurea, Cistus albidus, Teucrium pseudochamaepytis, Brachypodium retusum, and the ballistic species, Genista spartioides. Helianthemum almeriense is another vulnerable species that has actively restricted dispersal (antitelechory), which is common in arid regions. Wind dispersers such as Launaea lanifera were less vulnerable to the effects of fragmentation. Long-distance dispersers whose persistence depends on facilitative interactions with other individuals, e.g., allogamous species such as Thymus hyemalis, Ballota hirsuta, and Anthyllis cytisoides, exhibit disrupted long-range spatial autocorrelation when patch size is reduced.  相似文献

 Polymorphic sequence variation in the peptide-binding domains of MHC class I molecules appears to have been driven largely by the constructive action of natural selection on the specificity of the peptide-binding groove. Similar features are displayed by the variable domains of immunoglobulins generated in the sheep ileal Peyer's patch, but in this case there is evidence that the action of a targeted hypermutator acting on a selected substrate rather than antigen-driven selection is responsible for the pattern of variation in the system. Such a hypermutator acting in the germ line would not only mimic the action of natural selection but also, by convergent mutation, generate similar patterns of variation in unrelated alleles that could be interpreted as evidence for short-tract gene conversion. We analyzed human class I MHC alleles in the light of these data, but failed to find evidence of the action of a similar hypermutator. A search for other mutationally driven patterns of variation also failed, even in hypervariable residues from parsimonious phylogenies. Single-nucleotide variation at these residues is also frequent in recent allelic variants, but the data are as consistent with short-tract gene conversion as with base mutation. We conclude that the patterns of allelic variation in MHC molecules are not driven by mutational pressure, but rather by conventional mutational processes, accompanied by short-tract gene conversion and intense natural selection.
