Ovarian follicles during infancy in Romanov and Ile-de-France ewe lambs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The ovaries of new born lambs (15 Ile-de-France and 19 Romanov, 34 ovaries) and of 4-week-old lambs (6 Ile-de-France and 12 Romanov, 18 ovaries) were examined histologically to compare ovarian follicular development in infant lambs of breeds differing in their prolificacy. Breed was the major factor affecting follicular population at birth. Ile-de-France lambs had a higher total number of growing follicles (P less than 0.001), and more preantral (P less than 0.001) and antral (P less than 0.005) follicles than did Romanov lambs. Furthermore, the size of the largest follicles was also reduced in Romanov compared to Ile-de-France lambs. At 4 weeks of age, most of the features of the ovarian follicular population except the mean size of the third largest follicle were similar between the two breeds. However, atresia of antral follicles had appeared only in Ile-de-France and not in Romanov lambs. When a challenge with exogenous gonadotrophins (1000 i.u. PMSG followed by 1500 i.u. hCG) was attempted, ovulation was triggered in 2/6 and 0/12 Ile-de-France and Romanov lambs respectively. Massive follicular development was noted in 3/6 Ile-de-France lambs but in none of 12 Romanov lambs. Retardation of follicular development together with retardation in the establishment of ovarian sensitivity to gonadotrophins are therefore features typical of the ovaries of Romanov lambs compared to Ile-de-France lambs during the post-natal period.  相似文献

Spring-born crossbred ewe lambs were raised in a natural photoperiod and saline (N = 6) or naloxone (1 mg/kg) in saline (N = 6) was injected (i.m.) every 2 h for 6 h at 5, 10 and 15 weeks of age and for 8 h at 20, 25 and 30 weeks of age. Blood samples were taken every 12 min during treatment periods. Naloxone had no effect on time to first oestrus (controls 235 +/- 6 days, naloxone 242 +/- 7 days). Mean serum LH concentrations and LH pulse frequency were elevated by naloxone in ewe lambs at 20, 25, and 30 weeks of age (P less than 0.05). The only FSH response to naloxone was a depression of mean serum concentrations at 30 weeks of age (P less than 0.05). LH pulse amplitude was elevated at 5 weeks of age in all ewe lambs and declined thereafter to a nadir at 30 weeks of age in control, but not in naloxone-treated animals (P less than 0.05). LH pulse frequency was elevated at 10 weeks of age in control ewe lambs and in all animals at 30 weeks of age (P less than 0.05). FSH pulse frequency declined from 5 weeks of age in control ewe lambs (P less than 0.05), with very few pulses noted in 25- and 30-week-old animals. We conclude that (1) opioidergic suppression of LH, but not FSH, secretion developed at 20 weeks of age in the growing ewe lambs used in the present study, with no obvious change in suppression before the onset of first oestrus: (2) pulsatile FSH secretion occurred in the young ewe lamb but was lost as the lamb matured: (3) attainment of sexual maturity was preceded by an elevation in LH pulse frequency.  相似文献

Active immunization of Merino and crossbred ewe lambs early in life with a partly purified inhibin derived from bovine follicular fluid (bFF) advanced their puberty. This occurred whether the lambs were immunized from 3 weeks of age or from 9 weeks of age or just 3 times between 3 and 9 weeks. However, the effect was more obvious with multiple injections starting at 3 weeks of age. The ovulation rate of the immunized lambs was significantly higher than that of the control ewes. When lambs were subjected to multiple immunizations the increased ovulation rate persisted in Merinos for at least 1 year after immunization ceased. The lambs injected 3 times only (at 3, 6 and 9 weeks of age) did not show any increase in ovulation rate. Plasma concentrations of FSH and LH measured in blood samples taken 1 week after immunization were not significantly different between the treatment groups. Daily sperm output in the urine and testis diameter were measured in ram lambs from the same breeds and flocks as the ewe lambs. Immunization with the inhibin preparation from 3 weeks of age resulted in a significant increase in daily sperm output (4255 +/- 701 vs 2344 +/- 344 x 10(6), P less than 0.01) and testis diameter (5.21 +/- 0.3 vs 4.33 +/- 0.2 cm, P less than 0.05) in Merino rams examined in the non-breeding season when the rams were aged 23 months. Although the same trend was seen in the following year the differences were not significant. Immunization from 9 weeks of age had no effect. A similar increase in daily sperm output was seen (at 20 and 25 months of age) in crossbred rams immunized from 3 weeks of age but the difference was not significant. Plasma concentrations of FSH (but not LH) in samples from rams immunized from 3 weeks of age were significantly higher than those of control rams at 7 and 60 weeks of age in Merino rams and at 23 and 31 weeks of age in crossbred rams. Plasma FSH concentrations at 21 and 26 weeks of age in the Merino rams immunized from 3 weeks of age were higher than those of control lambs, and these increases preceded a significant (P less than 0.05) increase in testicular diameter at 30 weeks of age (4.99 +/- 0.2 vs 4.37 +/- 0.2 cm). These results suggest that active immunization early in life with an inhibin-enriched fraction from bFF advances puberty in ewe lambs.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)  相似文献

Booroola-Awassi ewe lambs were heterozygous (F+) for a major gene F, influencing their ovulation rate, while Awassi lambs were non-carriers (++). Basal plasma FSH concentration (mean +/- s.e.m.) in Booroola-Awassi ewe lambs at 4 weeks of age was significantly higher than in Awassi lambs of the same age (5.06 +/- 0.60 and 2.04 +/- 0.32 ng/ml respectively; P less than 0.001). After GnRH administration, FSH increased from 3.89 +/- 1.10 to 10.58 +/- 1.30 ng/ml in Booroola-Awassi (N = 6) and from 1.87 +/- 0.29 to 4.64 +/- 0.33 ng/ml in Awassi (N = 6) ewe lambs (P less than 0.05). Ovariectomy caused an increase in plasma FSH in Booroola-Awassi (N = 4) and Awassi (N = 4) ewe lambs. At 1 week after ovariectomy plasma FSH increased from 5.96 +/- 1.02 to 7.06 +/- 1.05 ng/ml in F+ and from 1.67 +/- 1.06 to 5.21 +/- 0.66 ng/ml in ++ ewe lambs, suggesting a stronger negative feed-back effect exerted by the ovaries of Awassi lambs. At 15 weeks after ovariectomy FSH values were similar in Booroola-Awassi (18.28 +/- 1.96 ng/ml) and Awassi (16.07 +/- 0.70 ng/ml) lambs. Although the overall pattern of pituitary response to ovariectomy was similar in the F+ and ++ ewe lambs, Booroola-Awassi lambs had small ovaries (132.5 +/- 24.9 mg) and follicular development did not proceed beyond the preantral stage in 3/4 animals, and Awassi lambs had large ovaries (600.0 +/- 233.9 mg) (P less than 0.05) with many preantral and antral follicles.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Transrectal ultrasonography of ovaries was performed each day in non-prolific Western white-faced (n = 12) and prolific Finn ewes (n = 7), during one oestrous cycle in the middle portion of the breeding season (October-December), to record the number and size of all follicles > or = 3 mm in diameter. Blood samples collected once a day were analysed by radioimmunoassay for concentrations of LH, FSH and oestradiol. A cycle-detection computer program was used to identify transient increases in concentrations of FSH and oestradiol in individual ewes. Follicular and hormonal data were then analysed for associations between different stages of the lifespan of the largest follicles of follicular waves, and detected fluctuations in serum concentrations of FSH and oestradiol. A follicular wave was defined as a follicle or a group of follicles that began to grow from 3 to > or = 5 mm in diameter within a 48 h period. An average of four follicular waves per ewe emerged during the interovulatory interval in both breeds of sheep studied. The last follicular wave of the oestrous cycle contained ovulatory follicles in all ewes, and the penultimate wave contained ovulatory follicles in 10% of white-faced ewes but in 57% of Finn ewes. Transient increases in serum concentrations of FSH were detected in all animals and concentrations reached peak values on days that approximated to follicle wave emergence. Follicular wave emergence was associated with the onset of transient increases in serum concentrations of oestradiol, and the end of the growth phase of the largest follicles (> or = 5 mm in diameter) was associated with peak serum concentrations of oestradiol. Serum FSH concentrations were higher in Finn than in Western white-faced ewes during the follicular phase of the cycle (P < 0.05). There were no significant differences in serum concentrations of LH between Western white-faced and Finn ewes (P > 0.05). Mean serum concentrations of oestradiol were higher in Finn compared with Western white-faced ewes (P < 0.01). It was concluded that follicular waves (follicles growing from 3 to > or = 5 mm in diameter) occurred in both prolific and non-prolific genotypes of ewes and were closely associated with increased secretion of FSH and oestradiol. The increased ovulation rate in prolific Finn ewes appeared to be due primarily to an extended period of ovulatory follicle recruitment.  相似文献

A positive correlation was reported between ovulation (OR) rate in response to hCG in prepubertal ewe lambs and adult ewes. The finding suggested that the response to hCG may be used to select prepubertal ewe lambs for prolificacy. We studied plasma FSH concentrations and ovarian response to hCG injection during the prepubertal period in breeds with high (Chios), medium (Florina) and low (Karagouniki) OR and litter sizes (LS). The results showed that Chios ewe lambs presented a higher profile of plasma FSH during the 3rd to 7th wk of age when compared to the breeds with medium (Florina) and low (Karagouniki) OR and LS. The ovarian response to hCG showed that the Chios ewe lambs responded earlier, by exhibiting ovulation at 6 wks and more effectively, by demonstrating a higher OR than the other two breeds. There was no correlation among plasma FSH concentrations during prepubertal age (3rd to 7th wk), ovulation rate after hCG injection, or litter size at first and second lambing for all breeds. Therefore we concluded that the plasma FSH concentrations and/or the ovarian response to hCG injection during the prepubertal period is not a suitable criterion for early selection for litter size in the adult ewe of these breeds.  相似文献

Endocrine differences in rams after genetic selection for testis size   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Testis diameter and body weight were recorded from 6 to 76 weeks of age in ram lambs from two established lines selected for high (H) and low (L) testis size. While testis growth was greater in the H line up to 14 weeks of age (P less than 0.001), body weight was significantly lower, with the L line rams being 10 kg heavier by 76 weeks. There were no differences in plasma LH up to 20 weeks of age, but FSH concentrations were significantly lower at 14 and 20 weeks in the H line. Testosterone concentrations were not significantly higher in the H line from 6 to 20 weeks. In lambs castrated at birth, significantly higher FSH values were recorded from 6 to 20 weeks of age in the H line (P less than 0.001) whereas there was no difference in LH concentration at 6 and 10 weeks of age between the lines. At 14 and 20 weeks, however, the concentrations of LH were greater in the H than L line lambs (P less than 0.05). After hemicastration at 6 weeks of age, the rate of growth of the remaining testis in the L line lambs was significantly faster than in entire lambs of that line from 10 to 20 weeks (P less than 0.05 at 10 weeks to P less than 0.001 at 20 weeks). There was no difference in the rate of testis growth between the the entire and hemicastrated lambs from the H line from 6 to 12 weeks of age. It can be concluded that there is an underlying genetic difference in pituitary gland and/or hypothalamic activity in ram lambs from the two selected lines.  相似文献

During terminal development of antral follicles, granulosa cells progressively lose their proliferative activity. Romanov (ovulation rate = 3) and Ile-de-France (ovulation rate = 1) breeds of sheep were compared for fractions of proliferating granulosa cells, determined by in vitro continuous [3H] thymidine labelling. In both breeds, the fraction of proliferating cells decreased with increasing follicular size according to a sigmoid-shaped curve. After linearization, the slope of the regression line was higher (in absolute value) in Romanov, compared to Ile-de-France ewes (p = 0.02). In vivo FSH treatment led to a decrease in the slope of the regression line in Romanov ewes only (p = 0.03). These results suggest that during terminal follicular development (1) the rate of cell cycle exit is higher in granulosa cells of Romanov, compared to lie-de-France follicles, and (2) Romanov granulosa cells are more responsive to exogenous FSH in term of proliferation. These mechanisms may underlie differential dynamics of follicular development in poly- and mono-ovulating breeds of sheep.  相似文献

Divergent selection has resulted in two lines of lambs (high and low) that have a 5-fold difference in their ability to release luteinizing hormone (LH) in response to 5 micrograms of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH). Baseline gonadotrophin concentrations, the gonadotrophin responses to a GnRH challenge and the concentrations of testosterone and oestradiol were compared in lambs which were castrated at birth and intact lambs from both selection lines at 2, 6, 10 and 20 weeks of age. The pattern of LH and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) secretion was similar in the two lines, but differed between the intact and the castrated lambs. Basal LH and FSH secretion were significantly higher in the castrates than in the intact lambs from both selection lines. The high-line lambs had significantly higher basal FSH concentrations at all ages tested and significantly higher basal LH concentrations during the early postnatal period. The magnitude of the gonadotrophin responses to GnRH differed significantly between the intact and the castrated lambs within each line, the amount of gonadotrophins secreted by the castrated lambs being significantly greater. The removal of gonadal negative feedback by castration did not alter the between-line difference in either LH or the FSH response to the GnRH challenge. Throughout the experimental period, the concentration of testosterone in the intact lambs was significantly greater than in the castrated lambs in both selection lines, but no significant difference was seen in the concentrations of oestradiol. No significant between-line differences were found in the peripheral concentrations of testosterone or oestradiol in the intact lambs from the two selection lines. Therefore, despite similar amounts of gonadal negative feedback in the selection lines, there were significant between-line differences in basal gonadotrophin concentrations, at 2 and 6 weeks of age, and in the LH and FSH responses to an exogenous GnRH challenge, at all ages tested. Removal of gonadal negative feedback did not affect the magnitude of the between-line difference in the response of the lines to GnRH stimulation. The results indicate that the effects of selection on gonadotrophin secretion are primarily at the level of the hypothalamo-pituitary complex.  相似文献

Prolific breeds of sheep (Romanov, Finn and Booroola Romanov crosses heterozygous for the Booroola gene (F+) were compared with breeds of lower prolificacy (Ile-de-France, Finn X Scottish Blackface, Merino X Blackface and Booroola X Romanov not carrying a copy of Booroola gene (++] by in-vivo monitoring of follicular kinetics by ink labelling during the late luteal phase and follicular phase of the oestrous cycle followed by histological examination of the ovaries or follicle dissection. At each of 3 successive laparotomies, the 3 largest follicles of each ovary were measured and ink labelled. At the final laparotomy, around the beginning of oestrus, all ewes were ovariectomized. High ovulation rate was not associated with the total number of antral follicles in any of the breeds. However, there were more follicles greater than 2 mm in diameter in Romanov and Booroola X Romanov crosses (F+) compared to their respective controls. Such a feature was not observed in Finnish Landrace compared to Finn X Blackface and Merino X Blackface ewes. A more numerous population of recruitable follicles, together with a similar incidence of selection through atresia, were the features associated with the high ovulation rate of Romanov compared to Ile-de-France ewes. The high ovulatory potential of the Finn ewes resulted from a markedly reduced incidence of selection through atresia. Booroola X Romanov ewes carrying a copy of the Booroola gene (F+) appeared to possess features of both parental breeds, including high numbers of recruitable follicles, smaller follicular size when recruitment occurs and an extended time for recruitment. Booroola X Romanov (++) ewes, not carrying the gene, appeared to have lost part of the 'Romanov characteristics' of a more numerous population of recruitable follicles. The variability in the kinetics of preovulatory enlargement, seen in these breeds of sheep, demonstrates that there are a number of pathways through which high ovulation rate can be achieved and hence through which ovulation rate might be manipulated.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to determine the effect of GnRH analogue (buserelin) or human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG, Chorulon) treatment on Day 12 of pregnancy on ovarian function, plasma hormone concentrations, conceptus growth and placentation in ewes and ewe lambs. After oestrus synchronization with progestagen sponges and eCG, all the animals were mated with fertile rams. Both ewes and ewe lambs (20 per treatment group) were given either normal saline or 4 microg GnRH or 200 IU hCG on Day 12 post-mating. Pre- and post-treatment plasma hormone concentrations were determined in seven pregnant animals per treatment group in samples collected 1h before and 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 24, 48 and 72 h after treatment. Overall mean progesterone concentrations were higher (P<0.001) in ewes as compared with ewe lambs in saline-treated controls. GnRH or hCG treatment increased (P<0.001) mean plasma progesterone concentrations in both age groups, however, post-treatment concentrations were significantly (P<0.05) higher in ewes than in ewe lambs. Oestradiol concentrations were similar in the two control groups. In ewes, but not in ewe lambs, both GnRH and hCG treatments significantly (P<0.05) increased the mean oestradiol concentrations above pre-treatment levels. Moreover, post-treatment oestradiol concentrations in GnRH- and hCG-treated animals were significantly (P<0.05) higher than those in the saline-treated controls. LH release in response to GnRH treatment was greater (P<0.05) in ewes than in ewe lambs, whereas FSH release in ewes was less (P<0.05) than that of ewe lambs. The effects of GnRH or hCG on conceptus growth and placentation was determined at slaughter on Day 25. In ewes, GnRH treatment increased (P<0.05) luteal weight, amniotic sac width and length, and crown-rump length compared with controls, but had no effect on these parameters in ewe lambs. In ewes, hCG treatment also enhanced (P<0.05) luteal weight, amniotic sac width and length, crown-rump length, embryo weight and number of placentomes as compared with controls. In ewe lambs, there was no difference (P<0.05) between hCG and control groups in luteal weight, embryo weight and amniotic sac width but crown-rump length, amniotic sac length and the number of placentomes forming the placenta were greater (P<0.05). In conclusion, GnRH or hCG treatment on Day 12 of pregnancy can increase ovarian function, conceptus growth and placental attachment in ewes. However, these treatments were less effective in ewe lambs.  相似文献

Stimulation by naloxone, an opioid antagonist, of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) secretion was examined in spring-born crossbred ram lambs raised under natural photoperiod. Vehicle (n = 6) or 1 mg naloxone/kg vehicle (n = 6) was injected (i.m.) 3 times at 2-h intervals at 5, 10 and 15 weeks of age and 4 times at 2-h intervals at 20, 25, 30 and 35 weeks of age. Blood samples were taken every 12 min for 6 h at 5, 10 and 15 weeks of age and for 8 h at 20, 25, 30 and 35 weeks of age. Naloxone had no effect on age at sexual maturity (controls 239 +/- 23 days; naloxone 232 +/- 33 days). The only significant (P less than 0.05) effect of naloxone on FSH was a greater pulse amplitude in 10-week-old treated lambs than in control lambs. Naloxone treatment resulted in greater LH pulse amplitude at 5 and 10 weeks of age (P less than 0.05), lower basal serum concentration of LH at 10 weeks of age (P less than 0.05), greater LH pulse frequency at 25 weeks of age (P less than 0.05), and greater mean serum concentrations of LH, basal LH and LH pulse amplitude at 35 weeks of age (P less than 0.01) than in the controls. In both groups of lambs, mean and basal FSH, and LH and FSH pulse amplitude were highest at 5 weeks of age and fell with age. LH pulse amplitude was lowest at 35 weeks of age (P less than 0.05).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

During December mating periods of 2000-2003, wool and meat breeds crossed with East Friesian milk sheep and rams of prolific breeds (Finn or Romanov) were examined laparoscopically. Ovine ovaries were examined between 4 and 9 days after mating. The litter size was recorded and compared with the number of ovulations. The fertility of the analyzed animals was 69.6%, with 192.6% prolificacy. The difference between the average number of corpora lutea found on ovaries and the mean number of lambs born was 0.35 and ranged from 0.32 to 0.41 according to age group, from 0.22 to 0.41 according to sheep birth type, and from 0 to 0.52 lamb per ewe according to percentage of prolific breeds.  相似文献

Total follicular populations in ewes of high and low ovulation rates.   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The total ovarian follicular populations were studied in two breeds of ewes which differed greatly in their ovulation rates. Thus 8 Romanov (mean ovulation rate 3.1) and 12 Ile-de-France ewes (mean ovulation rate 1.4) were ovariectomized at oestrus during the breeding season. Each right ovary and 3 left ovaries were sectioned at 7 micron and examined microscopically. The number of small follicles, i.e. with 2 or less layers of granulosa cells, was estimated by a tested sampling procedure whilst all larger follicles were measured and arranged into classes. There were half as many small follicles but 1.5--2 times more large follicles in the ovaries of the Romanov ewes compared to those of the Ile-de-France ewes. The number of atretic follicles was approximately the same in both breeds and does not explain the difference observed in ovulation rate. It is concluded that the higher ovulation rate in the Romanov ewe is due to the greater number of large follicles available to be stimulated for ovulation.  相似文献

Prepubertal ewe lambs were treated with empty or filled melatonin implants. The implants were placed s.c. at birth and pituitary responsiveness to various doses of LHRH, LH/FSH pulsatility and prolactin and melatonin secretion were examined at 10, 19, 28, 36 and 45 weeks of age. Control animals (N = 10) showed no consistent alteration in pituitary responsiveness to LHRH during development. Ewes treated with melatonin (N = 10) had puberty onset delayed by 4 weeks (P less than 0.03) but no effect of melatonin on LH or FSH response to LHRH injection was observed at any stage of development. In the control and melatonin-treated ewe lambs the responses to LHRH injection were lower during darkness than during the day at all stages of development. No consistent differences in LH or FSH pulsatility were observed between treatment groups or during development. Prolactin concentrations, however, failed to decrease at the time of puberty (autumn) in the melatonin-treated group. Melatonin-treated ewe lambs maintained normal rhythmic melatonin production which was superimposed on a higher basal concentration and showed the same increase in melatonin output with age as the control ewes. These results indicate that the delayed puberty caused by melatonin implants is not due to decreased pituitary responsiveness to LHRH or to dramatic changes in basal LH or FSH secretion.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of buserelin or saline treatment on ovarian function (Experiment 1), plasma PGFM concentrations and oxytocin stimulated prostaglandin F(2alpha) (PGF(2alpha)) release (Experiment 2) in ewe lambs and ewes. Welsh Halfbred ewes (n=26) and ewe lambs (n=24) were mated to vasectomised rams at synchronised oestrus and on Day 12 post-mating each animal was injected intramuscularly either normal saline or 4 microg buserelin. In Experiment 1, plasma progesterone and oestradiol concentrations were determined in samples collected by jugular venepuncture 1h before and at 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 24, 48 and 72 h after treatment (n=7 per treatment group). Progesterone concentrations increased (P<0.05) from 2 to 8h after buserelin treatment and returned to basal levels after 72 h, whereas oestradiol concentrations were maximal at 2h post-treatment and returned to basal levels after 24h (P<0.05). Oestradiol concentrations were lower (P<0.05) in buserelin-treated animals than controls at 72 h post-treatment. Basal and post-treatment progesterone concentrations were greater (P<0.05) in ewes than in ewe lambs but oestradiol levels were similar for both age groups. Ovulation rate, determined by laparoscopy on Day 14, was similar for both age groups (ewes 1.1; ewe lambs 1.0). Buserelin treatment induced accessory corpora lutea in ewes (4/7; 57%) but not in ewe lambs (0/7; 0%). In the Experiment 2, plasma PGFM concentrations were determined in samples collected at 20-min intervals for 6h on Day 14 and at 20-min intervals for 1h before and at 10-min intervals for 1h and then at 20-min intervals for a further 3h period after an intravenous injection of oxytocin (1IU/kg body weight) on Day 15 post-oestrus. In this experiment there were five ewe lambs and six ewes per treatment group. There was no effect of buserelin treatment or age on basal PGFM concentrations on either Day 14 or 15. Although peak PGFM concentrations tended to be lower in buserelin-treated animals, the difference was not significant (P>0.05). However, peak duration following oxytocin challenge on Day 15 post-mating was shorter (P<0.05) in control ewes compared with control ewe lambs. In conclusion, buserelin treatment given on Day 12 post-oestrus enhances luteal function more in ewes than ewe lambs and after a transitory increase, reduces oestradiol concentrations in both ewes and ewe lambs. However, buserelin treatment does not significantly attenuate the luteolytic signal.  相似文献

Scrotal circumference (SC) and plasma concentrations of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) were measured in 19 Finnish Landrace (Finn) and 29 Rambouillet crossbred ram lambs raised in confinement and in 21 Finn and 19 Dorset crossbred ram lambs raised on pasture. SC was larger (P<0.05) for Finn crossbreds than for Rambouillet crossbreds only at 70 and 100 days of age. Finn crossbreds had more (P<0.05) plasma LH and FSH than did Rambouillet crossbreds at 20 and 44 days but not at 70 days. SC was larger for Dorset crossbreds than for Finn crossbreds at the same age, but SC was larger (P<0.05) for Finn crossbreds than for Dorset crossbreds at the same weight. Finn and Dorset crossbreds differed (P<0.10) in plasma LH and FSH concentration at 77 days only (Finn>Dorset).  相似文献

Plasma FSH and LH in prepubertal Booroola ewe lambs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Basal plasma concentrations (four 30-min samples) and GnRH-induced release of gonadotrophins were measured every 15 days between 30 and 90 days and at 110 days of age in Merino ewe lambs from the prolific Booroola ('B') flock (n = 18-23), the medium prolificacy ('T') flock (n = 14-20), and the 'O' flock (n = 4-8) of low prolificacy. At ages of 30 and 45 days B ewe lambs had mean basal plasma FSH concentrations of 145 and 122 ng/ml which were significantly higher (P less than 0.01) than those seen in T (45 and 53 ng/ml), and O (39 and 38 ng/ml) flock ewes. Between 60 and 110 days of age there were no significant differences between genotypes. The increment in FSH concentrations above basal levels induced by the subcutaneous injection of 100 micrograms synthetic GnRH was only significantly (P less than 0.05) greater in B than T and O genotype ewe lambs at 110 days of age but not at other ages. The basal plasma FSH differences between the B, T and O genotypes at 30 and 45 days of age were not consistently related to the size of litter in which lambs were born. At 30 days of age the mean plasma LH concentration of B, T, and O flock lambs were 2.6 +/- 0.5, 1.2 +/- 0.6 and 0.7 +/- 0.8 ng/ml respectively. These differences were not significant. At later ages there were also no significant differences between the genotypes with respect to basal LH, and the increase in LH induced by exogenous GnRH was always similar for the three genotypes.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of age and breed on the reproductive performance and lamb output of crossbred hill ewes relative to purebred Scottish Blackface (BF). BF ewes were compared alongside Swaledale (SW) × BF, North Country Cheviot (CH) × BF, Lleyn (LL) × BF and Texel (T) × BF ewes on six commercial hill farms across Northern Ireland, on which all the ewes were born and reared. Ewes were mated to a range of sire breeds, balanced across breeds, for up to five successive breeding seasons. Mature live weight of adult BF, SW × BF, CH × BF, LL × BF and T × BF ewes was 52.8, 54.9, 60.3, 55.6 and 58.6 kg (P < 0.001), respectively. Compared with the pure BF, the number of lambs born per ewe lambed was higher with LL × BF and SW × BF (P < 0.05), whereas the number of lambs weaned per ewe lambed was greater for LL × BF and T × BF (P < 0.01). Total litter weight at birth of all the crossbred ewes was heavier (P < 0.01) than the pure BF, except in primiparous 2-year-old ewes. Lambs born to CH × BF and T × BF dams were 0.24 to 0.35 kg heavier at birth (P < 0.01) than the other ewe breeds, whereas lambs born to CH × BF, LL × BF and T × BF dams were, on average, 1.7, 1.3 and 1.5 kg, respectively, heavier (P < 0.01) at weaning than those from BF dams due to their higher (P < 0.05) average daily gain. Compared with the pure BF, total weaned lamb output per ewe lambed was 3.7, 4.8, 6.7 and 5.4 kg heavier (P < 0.05) for SW × BF, CH × BF, LL × BF and T × BF, respectively. However, as a result of the heavier live weight of the crossbred ewes, production efficiency (lamb output per kilogram live weight (W) and lamb output per kilogram metabolic live weight (W0.75)) was higher (P < 0.001) for LL × BF ewes only. For all ewe breeds, litter size at birth per ewe lambed, total lamb birth weight per ewe lambed and litter size at weaning increased (P < 0.001) with age up to 5 years, but decreased in 6-year-old ewes. Average lamb weaning weight and total weaned lamb output per ewe lambed increased (P < 0.001) with age up to 4 years . Production efficiency of the 6-year-old ewes was lower (P < 0.01) than the younger ewes. This study shows that adopting a flock replacement policy based on crossing BF ewes with LL, SW, T and CH sires can lead to significant improvements in the productivity of hill flocks.  相似文献

Despite differences in FSH concentrations ranging from 1.5 ng/ml (Romanov ewes) to 4 ng/ml (Ile-de-France ewes) between the follicular and luteal phases, follicular growth (numbers of follicles growing, growth rates, maximum size reached) was morphologically similar between the two stages of the cycle. Injection of 750 i.u. hCG at Day 6 or 16 of the cycle triggered ovulation of 4.1 +/- 0.7 and 4.0 +/- 1.3 follicles in Romanov and 2.2 +/- 0.5 and 1.7 +/- 0.5 follicles in Ile-de-France ewes, respectively, demonstrating that functional differentiation was similar between the two stages of the cycle. As gonadotrophin environment differs between these two stages of the cycle, this suggests that there is a wide flexibility in the amount of gonadotrophins required to trigger terminal follicular growth and that ovarian requirements for gonadotrophins might work through thresholds. When Romanov and Ile-de-France ewes were given similar amounts of exogenous gonadotrophins (1250 i.u. PMSG, 750 i.u. hCG) after hypophysectomy, ovulation rates were close to the usual values (Romanov, 5.5 +/- 3.9; Ile-de-France, 1.4 +/- 0.5), demonstrating that differences in gonadotrophin concentrations during the follicular phase do not play a major role in the high ovulation of the Romanov compared to the Ile-de-France ewes.  相似文献
