While some lower vertebrates, such as zebrafish, do not appear to possess anatomically separate pathways of processing visual information (such as M-pathways and P-pathways), it is believed that separate processing of the visual stimulus (such as luminance and chromatic processing) is a basic requirement of vertebrate vision. In this study, spectral sensitivity functions were obtained from electroretinogram responses to heterochromatic flicker photometry stimuli at several flicker rates, including a low flicker rate (2 Hz), in an attempt to predominantly stimulate chromatic processes and a high flicker rate (16 Hz), in an attempt to predominantly stimulate luminance processes. In addition, chromatic adaptation was used to isolate and examine the temporal properties of the different cone-type contributions to the electroretinogram response. Spectral sensitivity functions based on responses to heterochromatic stimuli of a low flicker rate appeared to receive both opponent and nonopponent contributions; however, when the stimulus flicker rate was high, spectral sensitivity appeared to be a function of only nonopponent mechanisms. Also, the differences in cone contributions to the spectral sensitivity functions across the different flicker rates appear to be related to the temporal properties of the cone contributions to the electroretinogram response.  相似文献

In monkeys (Macaca mulatta) instrumental reflex was elaborated with differentiation of black-and-white and colour visual stimuli in condition of systemic administration of pharmacological preparations selectively influencing the functional state of cholinergic brain structures. Differentiation of black-and-white and colour stimuli is not disturbed by atropine (0.1 mg/kg) and amizile (up to 1.5 mg/kg) injections; at greater doses frustration of the instrumental reflex takes place. Differentiation of black-and-white and colour stimuli is disturbed at injection of various doses of antidepressant phthoracizine: 5 mg/kg and 7 mg/kg, respectively. These disturbances are restored by the injection of definite doses of galantamine; for correction of colour differentiation a greater dose is required. The obtained data point to differences in neurophysiological and neurochemical processes responsible for black-and-white and colour vision.  相似文献

The colour discrimination of individual free-flying honeybees (Apis mellifera) was tested with simultaneous and successive viewing conditions for a variety of broadband reflectance stimuli. For simultaneous viewing bees used form vision to discriminate patterned target stimuli from homogeneous coloured distractor stimuli, and for successive discrimination bees were required to discriminate between homogeneously coloured stimuli. Bees were significantly better at a simultaneous discrimination task, and we suggest this is explained by the inefficiency with which the bees brain can code and retrieve colour information from memory when viewing stimuli successively. Using simultaneous viewing conditions bees discriminated between the test stimuli at a level equivalent to 1 just-noticeable-difference for human colour vision. Discrimination of colours by bees with simultaneous viewing conditions exceeded previous estimates of what is possible considering models of photoreceptor noise measured in bees, which suggests spatial and/or temporal summation of colour signals for fine discrimination tasks. The results show that when behavioural experiments are used to collect data about the mechanisms facilitating colour discrimination in animals, it is important to consider the effects of the stimulus viewing conditions on results.  相似文献

Bumblebee (Bombus terrestris) discrimination of targets with broadband reflectance spectra was tested using simultaneous viewing conditions, enabling an accurate determination of the perceptual limit of colour discrimination excluding confounds from memory coding (experiment 1). The level of colour discrimination in bumblebees, and honeybees (Apis mellifera) (based upon previous observations), exceeds predictions of models considering receptor noise in the honeybee. Bumblebee and honeybee photoreceptors are similar in spectral shape and spacing, but bumblebees exhibit significantly poorer colour discrimination in behavioural tests, suggesting possible differences in spatial or temporal signal processing. Detection of stimuli in a Y-maze was evaluated for bumblebees (experiment 2) and honeybees (experiment 3). Honeybees detected stimuli containing both green-receptor-contrast and colour contrast at a visual angle of approximately 5 degrees , whilst stimuli that contained only colour contrast were only detected at a visual angle of 15 degrees . Bumblebees were able to detect these stimuli at a visual angle of 2.3 degrees and 2.7 degrees , respectively. A comparison of the experiments suggests a tradeoff between colour discrimination and colour detection in these two species, limited by the need to pool colour signals to overcome receptor noise. We discuss the colour processing differences and possible adaptations to specific ecological habitats.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine gene effects in the peripheral and central neural mediation of colour preferences in artificially selected Japanese quail chicks (Coturnix coturnix japonica). Behavioural data indicated preferences of blue over red and red over blue in the respectively selected genetic lines, and general preferences for white in both lines. Preferences were influenced by luminance variations of testing stimuli. Choices between segmented stimuli that combined blue, red, and white, in various patterns of systematically varied hues and luminances, indicated perceptual discrimination of colours in each line. Preference values combined within stimuli summated additively in choice responses, suggesting no genetic association between colour preference and colour perception. Electrophysiological data indicated systematic differences between waveshapes of averaged evoked potentials according to hues of eliciting stimuli. These data also counterindicated the involvement of colour perception in the genetic variations of colour preference. However, no significant differences between waveshapes were found in relation to genetic variations in preferences.  相似文献

Freshly emerged flower visitors exhibit colour preferences prior to individual experience with flowers. The understanding of innate colour preferences in flower visitors requires a detailed analysis, as, on the one hand, colour is a multiple-signal stimulus, and, on the other hand, flower visits include a sequence of behavioural reactions each of which can be driven by a preferential behaviour. Behavioural reactions, such as the distant approach, the close-range orientation, the landing, and the extension of mouthparts can be triggered by colour stimuli. The physiological limitations of spectral sensitivity, the neuro-sensory filters, and the animals' different abilities to make use of visual information such as brightness perception, wavelength-specific behaviour and colour vision shape colour preferences. Besides these receiverbased factors, there are restrictions of flower colouration due to sender-based factors such as the absorption properties of floral pigments and the dual function of flower colours triggering both innate and learned behaviour. Recordings of the spectral reflection of coloured objects, which trigger innate colour preferences, provide an objective measure of the colour stimuli. Weighting the spectral reflection of coloured objects by the spectral composition of the ambient light and the spectral sensitivity of the flower visitors' photoreceptors allows the calculation of the effective stimuli. Perceptual dimensions are known for only a few taxa of flower visitors.  相似文献

The pollen beetle Meligethes aeneus Fabricius (Coleoptera, Nitidulidae), a pest of oilseed rape (Brassica napus), is known to respond to coloured stimuli; however, current understanding of the underlying mechanisms of colour choice in this species is limited. In the present study, physiological and behavioural experiments are conducted to determine the response of the pollen beetle to colours in the field. Spectral sensitivity is measured in 10 animals using the electroretinogram technique. Light flashes (100 ms) at varied wavelengths (340–650 nm, 10‐nm steps) and at different light intensities are applied to the eye after dark adaptation. In behavioural experiments in the field, 100 water traps of varying colours (from yellow to green to blue with varying amounts of white and black added, and with known spectral reflectance) are set out on a bare soil field in May 2008. The mean spectral sensitivity curve of M. aeneus peaks at 520 nm; however, a model template fitted to the long wavelength tail of the observed curve reveals a peak at approximately 540 nm (green). A secondary sensitivity peak is observed in the ultraviolet (UV) range (370 nm). A total of 2482 pollen beetles are captured in the coloured traps. The results show that the pollen beetles' preference for yellow over other colours can be modelled as a colour opponent mechanism (green versus blue); however, further experiments are needed to specify responses to colours with higher UV reflectance. These findings may be used to optimize trap colours for monitoring to help develop integrated pest management strategies for pollen beetle control.  相似文献

Discrimination of colours by macaque rhesus was studied by the method of elaboration of differentiation inhibition of instrumental conditioned responses to colour stimuli. Matrix of probabilities of instrumental reactions to presentation of colour stimuli, the columns of which corresponded to the colours applied, and the lines--to series of experiments with definite reinforced colour--was processed by the method of factor analysis. Four factors describing the used colours in four-dimensional Euclidean space were singled out. Spatial structure of the seven used colours satisfies the equation of four-dimensional sphere. Two first factors are interpreted as colour-opponent red-green and yellow-blue and the third and fourth ones as achromatic light and dark neuronal channels. Perceptive space of colour stimuli based on the data of instrumental behaviour of the monkey corresponds to analogous results obtained by the method of multidimensional scaling of subjective evaluations of super-threshold colour differences for the man.  相似文献

Colour is one cue that monkeys use for perceptual segregation of targets and to identify food resources. For fruit-eating primates such as Saguinus, an accurate colour perception would be advantageous to help find ripe fruits at distance. The colour vision abilities of black-handed tamarins (Saguinus midas niger) were assessed through a discrimination learning paradigm using Munsell colour chips as stimuli. Pairs of chips were chosen from an early experiment with protan and deutan humans. The monkeys (three males and one female) were tested with stimuli of the same hue, but different brightness values, in order to make sure that discriminations were based on colour rather than brightness cues. The results showed that the female, but not the males, presented an above-chance performance for stimuli resembling hue conditions under which tamarins forage (oranges vs greens). Colour vision in S. m. niger is discussed according to the advantages and disadvantages of dichromatism in daily search for food as well as to aspects regarding polymorphism in New World monkeys.  相似文献

We designed visual evoked potentials experiments to study the differential aspects of colour and brightness coding in man. The substitution of equally bright red and green stimuli for a background yellow was investigated and compared with different luminance increments and decrements of red and green. A dominant N87 component was found for a colour change from yellow to brighter red colours, which was less pronounced for green and absent for yellow luminance changes. It is also absent for pure red luminance increments and green luminance changes, but reappears with red luminance decrements or red-offset. The data are discussed within the framework of a new concept of how the visual system fuses red-green information and black-white border information. Retinal X-cells can transmit colour and high spatial frequency achromatic information simultaneously by encoding only the presence of edges (a.c.) for the black-white stimuli and the presence of both edges (a.c.) and uniform areas of colour (d.c.) for red-green stimuli. Phylogenetically this kind of information transmission enables colour vision to be implemented in a retina such as the cat's by adding only a second class of cones. Barlow's economy principle will be violated for colour in the periphery, but restored early in the striate cortex where there is an early decoding of the combined chromatic and achromatic information by the concentric double opponent cells. The N87 behaviour correlates with the proposed discharge of peripheral X-type cells, but not with the discharge of cortical double opponent concentric or simple cells, which no longer respond to homogeneous colour stimuli. It is suggested that N87 may be generated by geniculate afferents in the dendritic arborization of cortical cells, reflecting the behaviour of peripheral units, and thus the violation of the economy principle, rather than the next step in cortical processing. The early cortical restoration of the economy principle is supported by the absence of any further dissociated behaviour for colour and brightness in later components.  相似文献

Squirrel monkeys, like most Neotropical primates, display a sex-linked colour vision polymorphism. Here we assess the colour perception of 8 Saimiri ustus by a behavioural paradigm using Munsell colour chips as discriminating stimuli. A random variation in brightness assured that discriminations were based on colour rather than brightness cues. Results indicate that all males showed random performances when presented with stimuli which, in previous experiments with human colour-blind individuals and dichromatic non-human primates, proved to be difficult to discriminate. Females behaved as trichromats. The different phenotypes in S. ustus may offer diverse advantages in feeding ecology and are in agreement with the existence of vision polymorphism, as described for other species of squirrel monkeys.  相似文献

1. Ontogenesis of the electroretinogram, the mass electrical response of the retina to flash light stimuli, was studied in the guinea pig (Cavia porcellus), a precocial species with visual function at birth. 2. a-Wave components, b-wave, oscillatory potentials, slow PIII, and c-wave responses to flash stimuli developed between 55 and 64 days of gestation (full term is 68-69 days). 3. a-Waves attributable to photoreceptor functions were fully mature at 60 days. 4. ERG development lagged behind the reported critical milestones in retinal development; its prenatal onset indicates that no history of light entrainment is required for initiation of a mature ERG response.  相似文献

Colour and greyscale (black and white) pictures look different to us, but it is not clear whether the difference in appearance is a consequence of the way our visual system uses colour signals or a by-product of our experience. In principle, colour images are qualitatively different from greyscale images because they make it possible to use different processing strategies. Colour signals provide important cues for segmenting the image into areas that represent different objects and for linking together areas that represent the same object. If this property of colour signals is exploited in visual processing we would expect colour stimuli to look different, as a class, from greyscale stimuli. We would also expect that adding colour signals to greyscale signals should change the way that those signals are processed. We have investigated these questions in behavioural and in physiological experiments. We find that male marmosets (all of which are dichromats) rapidly learn to distinguish between colour and greyscale copies of the same images. The discrimination transfers to new image pairs, to new colours and to image pairs in which the colour and greyscale images are spatially different. We find that, in a proportion of neurons recorded in the marmoset visual cortex, colour-shifts in opposite directions produce similar enhancements of the response to a luminance stimulus. We conclude that colour is, both behaviourally and physiologically, a distinctive property of images.  相似文献

In the behavioural experiments when showing simultaneously coloured stimuli (food targets) and also in choosing between two stimuli, red and blue, it had been shown with a high level of reliability that the hungry Bufo viridis which had not been fed for at least a week, in the overwhelming majority of cases chose the red-coloured food targets. Within 1-3 days after an abundant feeding, in the same animals the changes occurred in their preferences of the prey colour. The percentage of choosing the blue targets by the satiated toads significantly increases. In a separate series of experiments had been demonstrated that the changing motivation is conditioned by colour, since hungry and satiated Bufo viridis under conditions of simultaneous demonstration of four stimuli, black and three different grey stimuli, chose exclusively the black stimulus.  相似文献

The spectral sensitivity of the dark-adapted eye of Helix lucorum L. was investigated using a semi-intact preparation "ball of the eye--optic nerve--cerebral ganglion". The amplitudes of responses of the electroretinogram to monochromatic stimuli of different intensities were used for a reconstruction of the spectral sensitivity. The averaged curve of the spectral sensitivity coincided well with the Dartnall's nomogram for a pigment having the maximum of spectral sensitivity near 496 nm.  相似文献

Abstract.  Behavioural responses to odours of oilseed rape in bud and flower stage and to green and yellow colours are studied for the two main phenological stages of pollen beetles, Meligethes aeneus , a major pest of oilseed rape, Brassica napus . Over-wintered individuals oviposit in buds of oilseed rape. Adults of the new generation (i.e. the summer generation) feed on flowers of different plant species before over wintering. In olfactometer experiments, the over-wintered beetles display a higher preference for odour of oilseed rape at the bud stage compared with the summer generation, both with and without colour stimuli. Flower odours are preferred in combination with yellow colour. Colour stimuli presented alone do not affect the behaviour. The summer generation beetles respond to both bud and flower odour. Adding colour stimuli changes the summer generations preference towards yellow and flower odour.  相似文献

The results of early studies on colour vision in dogs led to the conclusion that chromatic cues are unimportant for dogs during their normal activities. Nevertheless, the canine retina possesses two cone types which provide at least the potential for colour vision. Recently, experiments controlling for the brightness information in visual stimuli demonstrated that dogs have the ability to perform chromatic discrimination. Here, we show that for eight previously untrained dogs colour proved to be more informative than brightness when choosing between visual stimuli differing both in brightness and chromaticity. Although brightness could have been used by the dogs in our experiments (unlike previous studies), it was not. Our results demonstrate that under natural photopic lighting conditions colour information may be predominant even for animals that possess only two spectral types of cone photoreceptors.  相似文献

Colour preferences of flower-naive honeybees   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Flower-naive honeybees Apis mellifera L. flying in an enclosure were tested for their colour preferences. Bees were rewarded once on an achromatic (grey, aluminium or hardboard), or on a chromatic (ultraviolet) disk. Since naive bees never alighted on colour stimuli alone, a scent was given in combination with colour. Their landings on twelve colour stimuli were recorded. Results after one reward (“first test”) were analysed separately from those obtained after few rewards (“late tests”).
  1. After pre-training to achromatic signals, bees preferred, in the first test, bee-uv-blue and bee-green colours. With increasing experience, the original preference pattern persisted but the choice of bee-blue and bee-green colours increased.
  2. Neither colour distance of the test stimuli to the background or to the pre-training signal, nor their intensity, nor their green contrast, accounted for the colour choice of bees. Choices reflected innate preferences and were only associated with stimulus hue.
  3. Bees learned very quickly the pre-trained chromatic stimulus, the original colour preferences being thus erased.
  4. Colour preferences were strongly correlated with flower colour and its associated nectar reward, as measured in 154 flower species.
  5. Colour preferences also resemble the wavelength dependence of colour learning demonstrated in experienced bees.

We examined the conditions under which a feature value in visual working memory (VWM) recruits visual attention to matching stimuli. Previous work has suggested that VWM supports two qualitatively different states of representation: an active state that interacts with perceptual selection and a passive (or accessory) state that does not. An alternative hypothesis is that VWM supports a single form of representation, with the precision of feature memory controlling whether or not the representation interacts with perceptual selection. The results of three experiments supported the dual-state hypothesis. We established conditions under which participants retained a relatively precise representation of a parcticular colour. If the colour was immediately task relevant, it reliably recruited attention to matching stimuli. However, if the colour was not immediately task relevant, it failed to interact with perceptual selection. Feature maintenance in VWM is not necessarily equivalent with feature-based attentional selection.  相似文献

We have monitored the development of infant colour vision by measuring chromatic contrast sensitivity and acuity in eight young infants over a period of 6 months. Steady-state visual evoked potentials (VEPS) were recorded in response to both chromatic (red-green) and luminance (red-black or green-black) patterns that were reversed in contrast over time. For most infants, no response could be obtained to chromatic stimuli of any size or contrast before 5 weeks of age, although luminance stimuli of 20% contrast gave reliable responses at that age. When responses to chromatic stimuli first appeared, they could be obtained only with stimuli of very low spatial frequency, 20 times lower than the acuity for luminance stimuli. Both contrast sensitivity and acuity for chromatic stimuli increased steadily, more rapidly than for luminance stimuli. As the spectral selectivities of infant cones are similar to those of adults, the difference in rate of development of luminance and chromatic contrast sensitivity and acuity stimuli probably reflects neural development of the infant colour system.  相似文献
