There is little experimental evidence testing whether currentbrood size and past brood mortality influence mate desertion.In the cichlid Aequidens coeruleopunctatus both parents initiallydefend offspring. In a field study, all experimental broods,irrespective of initial brood size (222.9 ± 60.4, mean± SD), were manipulated to a size of 100 fry. Neitherthe duration nor investment of females in parental care differed between control and brood reduced pairs, even though care seemedcostly. On average, females lost 5.1 ± 4.8% of initialweight while guarding a brood until independence. In contrast,males with experimentally reduced broods guarded fry for significantlyfewer days before deserting their mate than did males fromcontrol pairs with natural-sized broods (20.5 ± 7.5 vs. 14.2 ± 6.2 days). In at least 20% of cases (n = 9/45),the deserting male immediately mated with another female. Maleswith experimentally reduced broods also spent less time guardingfry before deserting and attacked fewer brood predators thandid males with control broods. For broods manipulated to have100 fry, there was a significant negative relationship betweenthe days until male desertion and the proportion of the initialbrood removed. This indicates that male assessment of the futuresuccess of the current brood (hence its reproductive value)is based on past mortality and/or that there is variation amongmales in the expected size of future broods. Both current broodsize and brood size relative to initial brood size are thereforepredictors of male, but not female, parental behavior and matedesertion. Female care may be unaffected by brood reductiondue to limited breeding opportunities and partial compensationfor reduced male care.  相似文献

In 1993 and 1994 we determined the frequency of extrapair paternityin broods of great tits, Parus major using multilocus DNA fingerprinting.We found no instances of intraspecific brood parasitism, but40% of broods (31/78) contained extrapair-fathered young and83% of offspring (58/681) were xtrapair We identified the geneticfathers of 60% of the extrapair nestlings (35/ 58). Males withfull and lost paternity did not differ significantly in traitsthat have been suggested to indicate male quality, nor did thegenetic and social fathers of extrapair offspring. In 1993,cuckolded males sired more offspring that recruited to the subsequentbreeding season than males with full paternity. Moreover, eventhough genetic fathers of extrapair young (EPY) sired more fledglingsthan the males they cuckolded, genetic and social fathers ofEPY did not differ in the number of recruits sired. Also, theEPY of a brood did not survive better than their half sibs.Thus, our results do not supportthe hypothesis that femaleschoose better quality males for extrapair matings ("good genes"hypothesis). Further, the level of extrapair paternity differedmarkedly between the two years. Our data show that females areconstrained in their extrapair activities by the availabilityof extrapair mates. This is at least partly due to yearly differencesin breeding synchrony.  相似文献

Male red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus) provisioned50%(118/235) of available broods over an 8-year period. In mostcases, each male provisioned only the oldest brood on his territory,but in 21 cases, the male fed a younger brood after first feedingan older one. In 10 of these cases the switch to the youngerbrood followed predation of the older brood, but in the remaining11 cases the cause of the switch was unknown. To determine whethermale red-winged blackbirds adjust their provisioning when thedemands of their broods change, we exchanged broods betweenpairs of nests on 10 territories. Before each exchange, eachmale had been feeding nestlings of only one of the two broods.In response to the exchanges, male (and female) red-winged blackbirdsimmediately adjusted their rates of provisioning to the increasedor decreased demands of the broods. In addition, most malesswitched their provisioning within a day after the exchangeso that they fed the same broods as before the exchanges. Ourresults show that male red-winged blackbirds adjust their provisioningwhen the demands of their broods change and suggest that maleshave enough information about other nesting attempts on theirterritories to shift to a more profitable brood when the expectedbenefits of provisioning change. Male red-winged blackbirdsdo not appear to follow an investment strategy based on priorinvestments (i.e., they do not commit the "Concorde fallacy").  相似文献

We measured the selection pressure on brood size in a recentlyestablished population of great tits (Parus major L.) in thenorthern Netherlands by manipulating brood size in three years(1995: n = 51, 1997: n = 66, 1998: n = 51), and we estimatedfitness consequences in terms of local survival of both offspringand parents. Enlarged broods had highest fitness; the offspringfitness component was positively affected by manipulation andthe parental fitness component was unaffected. Parental survivaland the probability that parents produced a second clutch werenot affected by the treatment. However, parents that had raisedenlarged broods produced their second clutch later in the season.Clutch size, brood size, and laying date of birds recapturedin the next breeding season were largely independent of thetreatment. We conclude that there is strong evidence for selectionfor larger brood size and reject the individual optimizationhypothesis for this population because the number of young inthe nest predicts fitness independently of the manipulationhistory.  相似文献

Theoretical models suggest that sibling competition should selectfor conspicuous begging signals. If so, begging intensity mightbe expected to increase with the number of competitiors. Thepurpose of our study was to examine the relationship betweenbegging intensity and brood size using nestling tree swallows(Tachycineta bicolor) as our model. Over 2 years, we videotapedbegging behavior in unmanipulated broods of different sizes.We found that begging intensity increased with brood size. Theaverage weight of nestlings in each brood did not vary withbrood size, but feeding rate per nestling decreased with broodsize, suggesting that nestlings in larger broods begged moreintensively, possibly because they were hungrier. We also conductedan experiment to examine the effect of nest mates on beggingin different-sized broods. We found that nestlings with similarweights, previous competitive environments, and food deprivationbegged more intensively in large broods than in small broods.Overall, our study indicates that begging intensity increaseswith brood size in tree swallows. This relationship may resultfrom interactions among brood mates rather than from lower feeding rates to individual nestlings in larger broods.  相似文献

A brood manipulation experiment on great tits Parus major was performedto study the effects of nestling age and brood size on parentalcare and offspring survival. Daily energy expenditure (DEE)of females feeding nestlings of 6 and 12 days of age was measuredusing the doubly-labeled water technique. Females adjusted theirbrooding behavior to the age of the young. The data are consistentwith the idea that brooding behavior was determined primarilyby the thermoregulatory requirements of the brood. Female DEEdid not differ with nestling age; when differences in body masswere controlled for, it was lower during the brooding periodthan later. In enlarged broods, both parents showed significantlyhigher rates of food provisioning to the brood. Female DEE wasaffected by brood size manipulation, and it did not level offwith brood size. There was no significant effect of nestlingage on the relation between DEE and manipulation. Birds wereable to raise a larger brood than the natural brood size, althoughlarger broods suffered from increased nestling mortality ratesduring the peak demand period of the nestlings. Offspring conditionat fledging was negatively affected by brood size manipulation,but recruitment rate per brood was positively related to broodsize, suggesting that the optimal brood size exceeds the naturalbrood size in this population.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. The degree to which a female partitions resourcesbetween fecundity and per offspring investment is a centralquestion in life-history theory. Maternal effects may influencethe nature of this tradeoff through their effect on per offspringinvestment and subsequent offspring fitness. The purpose ofthis study was to determine the effect of female age and sizeon brood size (number of offspring), per offspring investment,and fitness in the polychaete Streblospio benedicti. Early stageembryos were collected from brooding females of known age andsize over a period of 100 days; these embryos were counted andanalyzed for their C and N content. Female size had a positiveeffect on brood size; larger females produced larger broods.However, brood size decreased with female age (females did notincrease in size after reaching sexual maturity). Brood sizedeclined 20–46% between 60 and 160 days of age. Duringthis same age period per offspring investment, measured in termsof C and N, increased by 25%. Offspring survivorship and sizeat two weeks post-release from the female were used as measuresof offspring fitness. Offspring survivorship increased 28% between60 and 160 days of age. Increased growth in offspring from olderfemales resulted in a 23% increase in offspring size at twoweeks. Including the maternal age effect in two population modelsfor S. benedicti increased population growth rate (). Populationgrowth was increased to a greater degree when the maternal effectwas modeled by enhancing offspring survival compared to whenfecundity was increased by the same proportional amount. Thissuggests that the maternal effect may be adaptive, particularlywhen conditions for offspring survival and growth are poor.  相似文献

I investigated seasonal changes in the relationships between brood size, body mass of nestlings and body mass of parents of the bull-headed shrike, Lanius bucephalus, in Ishikari, northern Japan. When the broods were 12days old, the body mass of the heaviest nestling in a brood did not differ among brood sizes, or throughout the season. However, the body mass of the lightest nestlings in a brood was different among brood sizes. The body mass of the lightest nestling in five- and six-nestling broods decreased throughout the season. The lightest nestling in four-nestling broods, and the lightest and the second lightest nestlings in five-nestling broods, were significantly lighter than the heaviest nestling in broods of this size. It is likely that pairs with six nestlings at 12days old can feed at least five of these nestlings enough to ensure their survival . The standardized body mass of parents (SBM), which was defined as the body mass divided by the length of the tarsus, did not differ among brood sizes, or throughout the season. It is possible that the relationship between the constancy of the SBM and the seasonal decline in the body mass of nestlings indicates that bull-headed shrikes have a limit to their parental efforts.  相似文献

We examined the role of extrapair fertilizations (EPFs) in themating system of the hooded warbler (Wilsonia citrina), a monogamoussongbird. DNA fingerprinting revealed that 8 of 17 (47%) femaleshad extrapair young in their first or second brood, and 23 of78 (29%) nestlings were the result of EPFs. Extrapair youngwere signifkandy more likely to occur in first broods than insecond broods. The proportion of EPFs within a brood was stronglybirnodal among broods: nests had 50% or more extrapair youngor none. In seven of eight broods where EPFs occurred, an adjacentmale neighbor was identified as the actual father. Male-likecoloration in females did not reduce the likelihood of havingextrapair young. Females with extrapair young did not receiveless parental care from their mates. All males who obtainedEPFs were mated to fertile females or were feeding offspringat the time they most likely mated with the extrapair female.Our results are consistent with the female control hypothesis,which predicts that females benefit from extrapair copulations(EPCs) and have some control over which males, if any, obtainEPCs. However, we could not reject the alternative hypothesisthat some male neighbors are particularly dominant and aggressiveduring EPC attempts, so females accept these EPCs to minimizecosts.  相似文献

Summary The homeothermic capacity of chicks varied as a function of brood size, age, and air temperature. Commitment to brooding by parents also varied as a function of brood size, age of the young brooded, and prevailing air temperature. It was experimentally determined that parents altered their brooding commitment in direct response to the achieved mean homeothermic capacity of the brood rather than energy demands of the brood per se. Because larger broods achieved a given level of homeothermic capacity earlier than smaller broods, parents spent less time brooding larger broods. This freed time represented an increase in potential foraging time by the parents. However, there was no evidence that parents used this potential increased foraging time to elevate the energy return to the nestlings. Other possible advantages of a facultative brooding response by parents are discussed.  相似文献

In the polygynous pied flycatcher, Ficedula hypoleuca, reproductivesuccess of females is constrained by male food provisioningduring the nestling period. Hence, there will be conflictinginterests among the male and each of his mates as to how malefeeding effort should be shared among broods. This paper describesthree experiments designed to examine the parental behaviorof the members of a bigynous trio, i.e., the male and his twomates, in light of these conflicts. In all experiments, primaryand secondary broods were manipulated to hatch on the same dayto reduce the difference in brood-reproductive value due toage. Males divided their effort equally when the two broodswere the same size. However, males did not allocate their investmentin proportion to brood size when brood sizes differed, but investedmore heavily per young in the larger broods. This finding suggeststhat males tried to optimize the joint effort of their two mates.Males and females showed similar responses to experimental reductionin brood demands, which indicates no difference in their willingnessto invest in offspring. When one of the male’s mates wasremoved temporarily, the male increased his total feeding rateand provided proportionately more food to the "motherless" brood.Through flexible allocation of parental investment, males seemable to optimize their reproductive interests in the two broods.The only way a polygynously mated female might successfullyincrease the amount of male assistance at her nest is to makeher own brood more valuable for the male, relative to the otherbroods he might have. Canvasback ducks (Aythya valisineria) suffer both intra- andinterspecific brood parasitism. During 3 years in Manitoba,80% of canvasback nests (n = 179 nests with completed clutches)were parasitized by redheads (A. americana), other canvasbacks,or both, with an average of 4.7 parasitic eggs per parasitizednest. Parasitism had significant negative effects on the reproductivesuccess of nesting canvasbacks, although the proximate mechanismsinvolved differed from those operating in altricial species.Accidental displacement of eggs when parasitic females forcedtheir way onto host nests was the principal negative effectof parasitism, reducing the number of host eggs that were incubatedand ultimately hatched. Parasitism by redheads was relativelymore costly to canvasbacks than was intraspecific parasitism,with approximately 0.31 and 0.17 host eggs displaced per parasiticredhead and canvasback egg laid, respectively. No additionalnegative effects of parasitism on the hatchability of host eggsoccurred subsequent to parasitic laying. Posthatch survivalof canvasback ducklings was lower in broods from parasitizednests but was unrelated to the presence or absence of redheadducklings. Canvasback hosts resisted intrusions by parasiticfemales but showed no evidence of discrimination against parasiticeggs or ducklings. Because most costs of parasitism in thissystem are inflicted at the time of parasitic laying, subsequentrejection of parasitic eggs or ducklings is probably of littlebenefit to canvasback hosts, while the evolution of behaviorthat might prevent parasitic laying in the first place, suchas more vigorous nest defense, may be constrained by its highcosts  相似文献

All parental hosts of heterospecific brood parasites must paythe cost of rearing non-kin. Previous research on nest parasitismby brown-headed cowbirds (Molothrus ater) concluded that competitivesuperiority of the typically more intensively begging and largercowbird chick leads to preferential feeding by foster parentsand causes a reduction in the hosts' own brood. The larger sizeof cowbird nestlings can be the result of at least two causes:(1) cowbirds preferentially parasitize species with smallernestlings and lower growth rates; and/or (2) cowbirds hatchearlier than hosts. I estimated the cost of cowbird parasitismfor each of 29 species by calculating the difference betweenhosts' published brood sizes in nonparasitized and parasitizednests and using clutch size to standardize values. In this analysis,greater incubation length and lower adult mass, surrogate measuresof the hatching asynchrony and size difference between parasiteand hosts, were both related to greater costs of cowbird parasitismwithout bias owing to phylogeny. To establish causality, I manipulatedclutch contents of eastern phoebes (Sayornis phoebe) and examinedwhether earlier hatching by a single cowbird or phoebe egg reducesthe size of the rest of the original host brood. As predicted,greater hatching asynchrony increased the proportion of theoriginal phoebe brood that was lost. This measure of the costof parasitism was partially owing to increased hatching failureof the original eggs in asynchronous broods but was not at allrelated to the size differences of older and younger conspecificnestmates. However, proportional brood loss owing to an earlierhatching conspecific was consistently smaller than brood lossowing to asynchronous cowbirds in both naturally and experimentallyparasitized phoebe nests. These results imply that althoughhatching asynchrony is an important cause of the reduction ofhost broods in parasitized clutches, competitive features ofcowbird nestlings remain necessary to explain the full extentof hosts' reproductive costs caused by interspecific brood parasitism.  相似文献

We manipulated brood sizes of eastern kingbirds (Tyrannus tyrannus)to measure the costs and benefits of parental care and to testwhether kingbirds showed evidence of individual optimizationof reproductive effort. We found that the number of feedingtrips (trips/h) increased and that per capita feeding rates(trips/nestling/h) declined as brood size increased. The declinein per capita feeding rates was mostly due to high feeding rateto broods of one: parents made roughly equal number of tripsto feed each nestling in broods of two to five. Nonetheless,nestling mass declined with brood size, probably because largebroods were fed more small prey. Nestling condition (mass adjustedfor structural size) differed only between broods of one andfive. After controlling for effects of brood size, feeding rateshad no supplementary influence on either nestling size or condition,but productivity and feeding rate were positively and significantlyrelated. Adult male condition did not vary with brood size,manipulated brood size, or total feeding rate, but declinedas the pair's per capita feeding rates increased. In addition,males that returned to breed were in better condition beforeleaving for migration than those that failed to return. Femalecondition tended to decline, and the probability of returningto breed dropped when broods were enlarged. However, femalecondition was independent of the probability of returning. Ourresults show that high feeding rates were costly, but that theycarried benefits (greater productivity). Some evidence for individualoptimization of reproductive effort existed: variability innestling and adult female condition were better explained bychanges in brood size than by the actual number of young inthe nest. Since its fust record in Icelandic waters in 1970, Praunus flexuosushas been found to be very common in the littoral zone of theAtlantic water at the south-west coast of Iceland. It seemspossible that P. flexuosus has only recently been introducedinto Icelandic waters. The life history of P. flexuosus hasbeen followed in Skerjafjord, near Reykjavik, in 1985–1986.The animals have a one-year life span. The females, some ofwhich appear to produce three broods, breed mainly during June–August.Breeding females ranged in length from 18.7 to 25.7 mm and thelargest brood was 72 eggs. The incubation time at c. 11°Cwas estimated to be 25 days. The daily growth rate of juvenileswas estimated to be 0.16 mm in July–August and 0.05–0.07mm in September–October. We studied the interspecific and intraspecific variation in the development of water stress and in the use of different water and nitrogen sources during the spring (wet season) and summer (dry season) in a shrub community in NE Spain. We measured shoot water potentials, stable deuterium isotopic composition (D) of xylem sap, leaf mass per area, leaf N and C concentrations, gas exchange, leaf 13C, and leaf 15N of the dominant species (Quercus coccifera, Arbutus unedo, Pistacia lentiscus, Erica multiflora, Globularia alypum). The D, the 13C and the shoot water potential values showed diurnal, seasonal, intraspecific and interspecific variation in the source and use of water. There was also seasonal, intraspecific and interspecific variation in the foliar 15N and N concentrations. In summer, some species (A. unedo, P. lentiscus and E. multiflora) presented significantly different D values in morning and afternoon measurements likely indicating that they used different sources of water during the day, and a dual root system in these species. We conjecture that dew may be one of these water sources. Species predawn water potential was negatively correlated with species xylem water D. There was also a positive correlation between 13C and D in P. lentiscus, species for which we took additional samples from nearby sites. These results suggest that the access to water from greater depths allowed the maintenance of more favourable plant water supply. Multivariate principal component analysis based on the studied hydrological and isotope variables clearly separated the seasons (wet spring and dry summer) and the species. The species resulted separated according to their evolutionary history (Pre-Mediterranean and Mediterranean) and the associated root and functional traits. These results show water (and nitrogen) partitioning among coexisting species of the same functional type (Mediterranean woody shrubs). They also show the great intraspecific plasticity of responses to resource availability.  相似文献

Clinids of the tribe Clinini are viviparous fishes occurring in the temperate waters of southern Africa. Females of the genus Clinus exhibit reproductive traits suggesting multiple paternity. These traits include prolonged gestation periods, matrotrophy and superfetation. We tested the hypothesis that broods of the species C. cottoides are sired by multiple males with the use of microsatellites. We genotyped three broods from known mothers and analysed the relationships within each brood using the software program COLONY, we also used allele counting to find evidence of multiple paternity. Our results revealed that multiple paternity occurred in all three broods analysed; two broods likely had two sires and one brood three sires. One male appear to have fathered offspring with separate females. Our study represents the first molecular analysis of parentage in C. cottoides.  相似文献

Summary Homogenates and plasma membranes were isolated from the livers of male Fischer 344 rats ranging in age from 19 hr to 92 days postnatal. These plasma membranes exhibited comparable levels of purity: protein yields were 2–2.5%; relative specific activities of 5-nucleotidase and ouabain-sensitive Na+/K+-ATPase were from 8–11 and from 12–19, respectively. 5-nucleotidase and ouabain-sensitive Na+-K+-ATPase displayed distinct and different developmental patterns. The activity of -glutamyltranspeptidase was found to be at exceptionally high levels in isolated plasma membranes immediately after birth and to decline precipitously thereafter achieving and maintaining low levels from days 3–21 postnatal. Liver plasma membrane -glutamyltranspeptidase activity was observed to increase 9.2 fold from this low point, first rising on day 21, peaking on day 40 and returning to low levels by day 56. From day 56 day to 92 postnatal, -glutamyltranspeptidase activity was expressed at a uniformly low level but a level 2 fold higher than that preceeding the rise at day 40. The hormone determinants of these developmental changes in -glutamyltranspeptidase activity are discussed.  相似文献

Summary The activities of three glycosidases, -glucosidase and (1,3)- and (1,6)-glucanases have been monitored during growth and blastospore formation inSaccharomycopsis fibuligera. The assays were carried out on the cell-free culture and in a cell-free extract and a wall autolysate preparation from the growing cells. In complex medium containing 1% glucose an increase in the level of all three enzymes was associated with the transition from mycelium to blastospores. When the level of glucose was increased to 5% blastospore formation was repressed and the level of -glucanases only increased at the end of the fermentation. The -glucosidase activity increased during the growth phase. In a defined medium in which slow growth in a wholly yeast-like form was observed, growth was not associated with a high level of -glucanase activity.  相似文献

Summary Protoplasts were isolated from hypocotyl of V. mungo (L.) Hepper or hypocotyl-derived callus of V. sublobata (Phaseolus sublobata Roxb.) and V. unguiculata (L.) Walp (syn. V. sinensis (L.) Saviex Hassk) using an enzyme solution comprising Cellulase 2.5%, Macerozyme, Hemicellulase and Driselase each at a 0.5% level in 0.5 M sorbitol. Isolated protoplasts were cultured in Murashige and Skoog's (1962) basal liquid medium supplemented with BA, NAA, 2,4-D (1 mg/l each) and sucrose (14%). After four weeks, protoplast colonies were transferred to the same medium with a reduced level of sucrose (7%). Colonies proliferated into actively growing calli. Further attempts to regenerate plants from such calli were not successful. However, protoclones of V. unguiculata differentiated roots on auxin/cytokinin supplemented media. Alternative methods for shoot differentiation from protoplastderived cultures were tried by the use of Agrobacterium tumefaciens shooter strains pGV 2215 or pGV 2298 or wild type strain B6S3.  相似文献
