We studied the performance of the coccinellid Cryptolaemus montrouzieri on citrus plant species infested with orange pulvinaria scale, Pulvinaria aurantii, under controlled conditions in the laboratory. The experimental host plants were blood orange, grapefruit, lemon, pummelo and kumquat. All life history parameters indicated best performance of C. montrouzieri, when reared on P. aurantii ovisacs on the leaves of grapefruit. Pummelo, blood orange, lemon or kumquat were less suitable.

The Japanese soft scaleTakahashia citricola Kuwana, 1909 is redescribed and transferred to the genus PulvinariaTargioni Tozzettias Pulvinaria citricola (Kuwana, 1909), comb. n.(Coccoidea: Coccidae). Pulvinaria gamazumii Kanda, 1960 is synonymized with Pulvinaria citricolacomb. n. and Pulvinaria nipponica Lindinger, 1933, is resurrected as the replacement name for Pulvinaria citricola Kuwana, 1914 (nec Kuwana, 1909). The adult female of Pulvinaria citricola (Kuwana, 1909) is redescribed and illustrated.

The citrus cottony scale, Pulvinaria aurantii Cock. (Hem.: Coccidae) is one of the most important citrus pests in Iran. This study investigated the toxicity and synergistic effects of organophosphorous insecticides (Malathion, Chlorpyrifos, Buprofezin and DG oil) on first nymphal instars of P. aurantii in the laboratory conditions (25?±?1?°C, 75?±?5% RH and 16L:8D photoperiod). The values of LC50 for Malathion, Chlorpyrifos and Buprofezin insecticides on the first nymphal instars were calculated as 76.90, 105.25 and 24.70?ppm, respectively. Also, results indicated that Buprofezin and Pyriproxifen are the most effective insecticides on first nymphal instars of P. aurantii. The values of LC50 for each insecticide without oil and in half dose along with DG oil were equal. This was an indication for synergism role of DG oil combination. The results of this study showed that DG oil not only decreases the consumption of insecticides, but also increases their efficacy.

The red-striped soft scale insect Pulvinaria tenuivalvata (Newstead) (Hemiptera: Coccidae) started to infest sugarcane plants (Saccharum officinarum L.) in different districts in Egypt during the last decade. The percentage of infestation was recorded in El-Wakf area, Qena Governorate (Naghhamadi mill zone) Upper Egypt in some fields. There are three levels of infestation, low, intermediate and high. From these fields, samples were selected for physical and chemical studies. The results obtained show that the stalks of infested plants decreased in weight, the sugar content (glucose and sucrose) drastically reduced and as the percentage of infestation increased the percentage of glucose and sucrose content significantly decreased. The primary and secondary humidity and the cellulose content also increased in the healthy plants compared to the infested ones. All the physical character of the infested plants was significantly affected in comparison with the healthy ones.

The genus Leptopulvinaria Kanda is revised and placed in the tribe Pulvinariini as understood by Hodgson. The species L. kawaii sp. nov., which has been misidentified as Pulvinaria camelicola or P. floccifera by several researchers, is recognized as a second species of the genus, in addition to the type species L. elaeocarpi Kanda. Adult females of L. elaeocarpi and L. kawaii are redescribed and a key to the species is presented.

Two new species ofAcer fossil woods,A. momijiyamense andA. Watarianum, are described and a short review of fossil wood of this genus from the Tertiary of Japan is given. In the course of a study on three fossil wood species which have been described asAcer andAcernium from Japan, it is noticed thatAcernium iwatense Watari does not belong toAcer but toPrunus of the Rosaceae, and is therafore transferred intoPrunus asPrunus iwatense comb. nov.

The genus Skidmorella Johnson, previously known only from the South Pacific islands, is discovered in Japan. The type species, Skidmorella magnifica Johnson, is confirmed from Japan as the first record of the species other than the type locality. In addition, two new species, Skidmorella amamiana sp. nov. and Skidmorella quadrisulucia sp. nov., are described from the Ryukyus, Japan. Phylogenetic relationships of the genus Skidmorella and its allies are discussed on the basis of their morphological characters.

Two new species and one new combination of Agaricales are described and illustrated from eastern Honshu, Japan, and Ishigaki Island, southwestern Japan: (1) Gymnopus oncospermatis comb. nov. (subsection Vestipedes of section Vestipedes), new to Japan, has pale brown to whitish, collybioid basidiomata with very close lamellae, and forms a distinct white extensive mycelial mat on the dead leaf bases of the palm Satakentia liukiuensis in Ishigaki Island; (2) Hydropus aurarius sp. nov. (subsection floccipedes of section floccipedes), forming clitocyboid basidiomata with a dark brown furfuraceous pileus and stipe and vivid yellow lamellae, found on fallen dead twigs in oak forests; and (3) Tylopilus castanoides sp. nov. (section Oxydabiles), forming medium to large, reddish-brown basidiomata with a minutely scurfy-punctate stipe, found in Carpinio quercion forests. Received: May 20, 2002 / Accepted: July 17, 2002 Acknowledgments I am grateful to Dr. Yousuke Degawa (KPM) for allowing the specimens cited to be kept in the Kanagawa Prefectural Museum of Natural History. Thanks are also owed to Mr. Sadayoshi Uehara, Mr. Wakao Ikeda, Mrs. Youko Ando, Dr. Yasushi Shibata, and Mr. Yasuhiko Goto for provision of specimens. Correspondence to:H.

An outbreak of cottony maple scale,Pulvinaria innumerabilis (Rathvon) was not controlled by chemical treatments, but large numbers of the coccinellid,Hyperaspis signata (Say), almost eliminated the scale in the succeding year.
