It has been revealed that, as a rule, Roundup herbicide inhibits activities of peptidases in the intestine mucosa and chyme in various fish species, both benthivorous (common carp Cyprinus carpio, silver bream Blicca bjoerkna, roach Rutilus rutilus, and crucian carp Carassius carassius) and piscivorous (perch Perca fluviatilis, pike Esox lucius, and sander Sander lucioperca). The tolerance of peptidases to the herbicide is species-specific. The magnitude and vector of the effects of Roundup depend on its concentration and localization of an enzyme. In the mucosa, the enzymes of common carp and pike are most tolerant, while the enzymes of common carp, silver bream, and pike are most tolerant in the chyme.  相似文献

We report the development of seven polymorphic microsatellite loci in muskellunge (Esox masquinongy) using an unenriched subgenomic library. Polymorphic loci exhibited 2–11 alleles with observed heterozygosities ranging from 0.190 to 0.917 (n = 24). All seven loci amplified by their respective primer pairs resulted in monomorphic products in northern pike (E. lucius) whereas three loci amplified monomorphic products in grass pickerel (E. americanus americanus); these results imply conservation of flanking sequence but loss of polymorphism between these closely related species. Only one of six microsatellite primers developed in a previous study in northern pike amplified polymorphic products in muskellunge.  相似文献

This article presents the results of analysis of parameters of the immune, antioxidant, and monooxygenase systems in the immunocompetent organs (pro- and mesonephros, spleen, and liver) of species belonging to different systematic and ecological groups, namely, northern pike Esox lucius, zander Sander lucioperca, and bream Abramis brama. Although having the same features in the functioning of homeostatic mechanisms in the species under study, significant differences were revealed between bream and another two species with respect to the parameters of the nonspecific immunity of tissues and enzyme systems that perform protective functions. In all the three species, the basic role in processes of immunopoesis and nonspecific protection is played by the kidneys and spleen, while the greatest values of the parameters of antioxidant defenses and ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase activity were recorded in the liver.  相似文献

Identification and protection of critical spawning habitat for muskellunge Esox masquinongy and northern pike Esox lucius is important for preserving the reproductive potential of both species. In this study, we implanted miniature radio transmitters through the oviduct into the egg masses of female muskellunge and northern pike just prior to spawning. This non-surgical procedure was a novel approach for identifying spawning sites when transmitters were expelled with the eggs during egg deposition. Preliminary studies in three lakes showed that muskellunge and northern pike deposited many of the transmitters in likely spawning habitat. An inability to find eggs limited our validation of this method, but nevertheless, a relatively high proportion (70%) of northern pike larger than 690 mm (27.2 inches) expelled transmitters in a previously known spawning area in Willow Lake, Minnesota. Shoreline vegetation in that area consisted primarily of sedges Carex spp., and the adjacent water was shallow with substrate consisting of large mats of water bulrush Scirpus subterminalis. A lower proportion (50%) of muskellunge expelled transmitters in Elk Lake, Minnesota. Water depth at likely spawning sites averaged 1.1 m (3.6 feet) and vegetative cover was variable, but Chara spp. was common to most sites. In Moose Lake, Minnesota, containing sympatric populations of muskellunge and northern pike, 60% of muskellunge and 90% of pike expelled transmitters. Chara spp. beds were the predominant substrate where transmitters were expelled in Moose Lake, but the two species deposited transmitters on deepwater bars (3.7–5.2 m) in addition to shallow near-shore habitat. These results suggest more flexibility in depths used for spawning than typically reported for muskellunge and northern pike.  相似文献

Hemoglobin affinity to oxygen, Bohr effect, sodium, potassium, and magnesium ion concentrations of erythrocytes in the three fish species from Rybinsk Reservoir (golden carp Carassius auratus gibelio, bream Abramis brama and pike Esox lucius) immediately after catching and during acclimation to laboratory conditions were studied. Our own and literature data on some other fish species were analyzed. The relationship between the functional features of the hemoglobin and ionic environment was found, and the changes taking place during acclimation and interspecific differences of these indices were shown.  相似文献

We compared the composition and content of fatty acids (FAs) in fish with different feeding habits (sardine (least) cisco Coregonus sardinella, goggle-eyed charr (pucheglazka) form of Salvelinus alpinus complex, humpback whitefish Coregonus pidschian, broad whitefish Coregonus nasus, boganid charr Salvelinus boganidae, and northern pike Esox lucius from an Arctic Lake. Feeding habits of the studied fish (planktivore, benthivore, or piscivore) significantly affected the composition of biomarker fatty acids and the ratio of stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen in their biomass. The hypothesis on a higher content of eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids in the fish of higher trophic level (piscivores) when compared within the same taxonomic group (order Salmoniformes) was confirmed.  相似文献

The taxonomic composition and distribution of microorganisms differing in the degree of association with the intestinal mucosa of the pike (Esox lucius) has been studied. Microorgansism of the families Enterobacteriaceae, Aeromonadaceae, and Vibrionaceae dominate in the gut microflora. Numerically prevailing bacterial species are characterized by high proteolytic and amylolytic enzyme activities as well as by high persistence accounted for by antilysozyme and antihistone activities. The results of this study show that Hafnia alvei, Yersinia ruckeri, Vibrio vulnificus, V. furnissii, Aeromonas salmonicida, and Shewanella putrefaciens may be regarded as normal components of the pike gut microflora.  相似文献

Species-specific differences and effects of natural (temperature, pH) and anthropogenic (zinc, copper) factors upon activities of casein-and hemoglobinlytic proteinases have been studied in the gut mucosa in pike (Esox lucius), zander (Stizostedion lucioperca), burbot (Lota lota) and perch (Perca fluviatilis). It is revealed that the intestine mucosa proteinase activities differ considerably from those ones in the fish stomach mucosa and that studied factors affect these activities to different extents. The stomach mucosa proteinases are most tolerant to the effects of studied factors, which is especially true for pike. The least tolerant are the intestine caseinlytic proteinases (except for the enzymes in perch). The effects of temperature, pH, and heavy metals depend on fish species, factors’ combinations (mono-factor, bi-factor, or multi-factor action) and on factor variability.  相似文献

Over evolutionary time, predator-prey interactions have shaped and constrained functional and behavioral traits of piscivorous fishes. The endangered Colorado Pikeminnow Ptychocheilus lucius, a large endemic piscivore of the Colorado River Basin, encounters a substantially altered prey base that differs in behaviors and morphologies compared to the historical suite of native prey. To assess physical limitations of Colorado Pikeminnow predation, we conducted a feeding experiment with two species of nonnative prey (spined and despined Channel Catfish Ictalurus punctatus and Red Shiner Cyprinella lutrensis) and quantified scaling of cranial morphology in this predator. In our predation experiments, Colorado Pikeminnow (215–312 mm total length) consumed both spined and despined Channel Catfish as well as Red Shiner but only consumed prey less than 20% of the predator’s total length. Previous feeding trials using smaller Colorado Pikeminnow, with native and nonnative prey species, indicated they consumed prey up to 35% of their total length, suggesting relative prey size limits may decrease as this predator grows. Morphological measurements also suggested relative prey size suitability may decrease as Colorado Pikeminnow become larger, with head depth and width demonstrating isometric scaling at small sizes and shifting to negative allometry as fish get larger. Together, these data suggest an ontogenetic shift in the head morphology of Colorado Pikeminnow may decrease the relative size of prey available to these predators. In severely altered systems, understanding trophic characteristics that limit overall predator resource availability will be critical for conservation of piscivorous fishes.  相似文献

The effect of pH on the activity of proteinases of intestine mucosa, chyme, and enteral microbiota was studied in three piscivorous fish species of the Rybinsk Reservoir differing in their ecological traits: pike Esox lucius, burbot Lota lota, and zander Sander lucioperca. In all fish species, studied pH of ten is optimal for the functioning of proteinases of intestine mucosa; in chyme proteinases, optimal pH values vary from six to ten. Optimal pH for functioning of proteinases of enteral microbiota is seven for zander and pike; pH of nine, for burbot. High activity of chyme and microbiota proteinases within the diapason of pH values of six to nine is a characteristic of burbot. Relative activity of proteinases of intestine mucosa in all fish species is not more than 15% of the maximal activity; that of chyme and enteral microbiota is lower than 40% in zander, close to 50% in burbot, and 80 and 50%, respectively, in pike. It is suggested that diversity of the patterns of pH-dependence of enteral microbiota proteinases relates to the specificity of microbiota in various ecological zones of the reservoir (littoral, sublittoral, and bathyal).  相似文献

The response of hydroxylase activity of cytochrome P-450 from the microsomes of fish liver depends on fish species and on the kind of pollution. Differences in activity of the enzyme in whitefish Coregonus lavaretus and Pike Esox lucius depend on differences in ecology and in sensitivity of species to industrial effluents. Whitefish reacted to pollution by decrease in the activity of cytochrome P-450. In pike the activity of the enzyme increased under the influence of industrial wastewater. Males of both species are less resistant than females to the aforementioned pollutants. With consideration to the obtained results, the determination of activity of cytochropme P-450 may be recommended as the indicator of pollution level of the aquatic environment with industrial waste products, including those containing heavy metals.  相似文献

Changes in spawning habitat of northern pike (Esox lucius) may affect their segregation from and coexistence with the closely related muskellunge (E. masquinongy). We estimated the areal coverage of robust and shallow emergent vegetation in three shared-spawning bays in the Upper St. Lawrence River from aerial photographs taken from 1948 to 2003. Robust emergent vegetation (e.g., cattail) increased in coverage by 155–241% while shallow emergents (sedges) decreased by 46–96%. The loss of sedges, an important northern pike-spawning habitat, may facilitate greater spawning overlap in offshore-submersed aquatic vegetation within bay habitats used by muskellunge. Development rates and characteristics of northern pike and muskellunge eggs and larvae were compared to better understand the implications of greater spawning overlap. Northern pike eggs developed faster than muskellunge eggs at temperatures of 4.7–19°C, and adhesive eggs and the presence of adhesive papillae were present in both species. Equations were used to predict degree-day requirements for hatching and swim-up in three habitats (shallow emergents, bay, and offshore shoal) along a temperature gradient. Northern pike required more estimated degree days to reach hatching in bay and offshore shoal habitat relative to shallow emergent habitat due to cooler temperatures. Significant spawning overlap is known to occur within bay habitats, but poor success of northern pike in deep bay habitats and overall reductions in abundance are hypothesized to currently buffer muskellunge from potential negative interactions between these species. Autotomy, the discarding of a prey appendage grasped by a predator, may evolve when the benefits of immediate survival outweigh the costs of appendage loss. In larval damselflies, joints connecting lamellae to the abdomen vary in size and shape within and among taxa suggesting that they may evolve under selection by invertebrate predators, such as dragonfly larvae. Assuming that joint width is proportional to the force required for autotomy, we tested if invertebrate predation favours smaller lamellar joints for autotomy or larger joints for structural support of lamellae for swimming. We compared the maximum joint widths of larval Lestes and Enallagma among ponds that varied in risk of invertebrate predation. Relative predation risk estimated as the frequency of regenerated lamellae within ponds was weakly and positively related to the relative abundance of larval dragonflies. The allometry of lamellar joint size decreased with increasing risk of invertebrate predation across ponds after controlling for variation in body size in Lestes congener but not in Enallagma species. Both species of Lestes had larger joint sizes than the five species of Enallagma, suggesting that the ancestral divergence of lamellar joints between these genera may influence contemporary responses to invertebrate predation.  相似文献

Two fish species reared in aquaculture (pink salmon Oncorhynchus gorbuscha and whitefish Coregonus lavaretus) and ten fish species from natural habitats (whitefish C. lavaretus, tugun Coregonus tugun, broad whitefish Coregonus nasus, least cisco Coregonus sardinella, vendace Coregonus albula, boganid charr Salvelinus boganidae, charr Salvelinus alpinus complex, northern pike Esox lucius, sharp-snouted lenok Brachymystax lenok, and taimen Hucho taimen) have been studied. The content of two long-chain polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids (PUFAs), eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n-3, EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3, DHA), in the muscle tissue of the fish and in their food (intestine contents) are compared. In the aquacultures of whitefish and pink salmon, the total content of EPA and DHA is significantly higher in feed than in the muscle tissue of the fish, which indicates losses of PUFA in the two-link food chain of the aquaculture during their transfer to the upper trophic level. EPA and DHA losses in aquaculture, which are confirmed by numerous literature data, mean an inefficient usage of the available sources of PUFAs and the aggravation of the global deficit of these biochemicals in the human diet. A study of natural fish populations reveals the accumulation of EPA and DHA in their biomass compared to food in many cases, although opposite phenomena are also observed. An assumption on the presence of an optimal, physiologically adequate species-specific level of PUFA in the fish muscle tissue has been made based on our data and literature data. If the level of PUFAs in the muscles is lower than optimal, their accumulation (bioaccumulation) from food and/or de novo synthesis are observed. When the optimal level is exceeded, the content of EPA and DHA in biomass approaches maximum species-specific values; however, part of these PUFAs entering from food is not digested or is catabolized. According to the obtained data, the species of the order Salmoniformes have an optimal level of 2 to 6 mg/g of wet weight. It has been found that in aquaculture approaching to maximum values of EPA + DHA content was accompanied by their losses (scattering) in the food chains, while in natural ecosystems the maximum values of PUFA content in the fish biomass are achieved by their accumulation from the lower trophic level. Boganid charr S. boganidae had the highest content of EPA + DHA in the muscle tissue among all known fish species (32.78 mg/g of wet weight).  相似文献

Age-dependent accumulation of 137Cs in the muscles and bodies of the pike Esox lucius (aged two to seven years) inhabiting a section of the Yenisei River polluted with artificial radionuclides has been studied. The content of 137Cs in muscles varied from 0.5 to 7.0 Bq/kg of fresh weight. The maximum content of the radionuclide has been found in juveniles. The content of 137Cs in pike muscles and body decreased considerably with age. The high content of 137Cs in the muscles of juveniles is probably a consequence of their higher intensity of feeding as compared to older individuals, which is due to the intense growth of juveniles.  相似文献

One of the many ways that invasive species can affect native ecosystems is by modifying the behavioural and ecological interactions among native species. For example, the arrival of the highly toxic cane toad (Bufo marinus) in tropical Australia has induced toad-aversion in some native predators. Has that shift also affected the predators’ responses to native prey—for example, by reducing vulnerability of native tadpoles via a mimicry effect, or increasing vulnerability of other prey types (such as insects) via a shift in predator feeding tactics? We exposed a native predator (northern trout gudgeon, Mogurnda mogurnda) to toad tadpoles in the laboratory, and measured effects of that exposure on the fish’s subsequent intake of native tadpoles and crickets. As predicted, toad-exposed fishes reduced their rate of predation on (palatable) tadpoles of native frogs (Litoria caerulea and L. nasuta). If alternative prey (crickets) were available also, the toad-exposed fishes shifted even more strongly away from predation on native tadpoles. Thus, invasion of a toxic species can provide a mimicry benefit to native taxa that resemble the invader, and can shift predation pressure onto other taxa.  相似文献

Background

Dictyostelid cellular slime molds (dictyostelids) are common inhabitants of the soil and leaf litter layer of fields and forests, along with animal dung, where they feed mostly on bacteria. However, reports on the species diversity of dictyostelids in South Asia, particularly Thailand, are limited. The research reported in this paper was carried out to increase our knowledge of the species diversity of this group of organisms in northern Thailand.

Results

Forty soil samples were collected at four localities in northern Thailand to assess the species richness of dictyostelids. These samples yielded five dictyostelid isolates that were not morphologically consistent with any described species. Based on molecular signatures, all five of these isolates were assigned to the family Cavenderiaceae, genus Cavenderia. All five share a number of morphological similarities with other known species from this family. The new taxa differ from previously described species primarily in the size and complexity of their fruiting bodies (sorocarps). This paper describes these new species (Cavenderia aureostabilis, C. bhumiboliana, C. protodigitata, C. pseudoaureostipes, and C. subdiscoidea) based on a combination of morphological characteristics and their phylogenetic positions.

Conclusions

At least 15 taxa of dictyostelids were obtained from the four localities in northern Thailand, which indicates the high level of species diversity in this region. Five species were found to be new to science. These belong to the family Cavenderiaceae, genus Cavenderia, and were described based on both morphology and phylogeny.

The feeding ecology of three piscivorous fish species (perch (Perca fluviatilis), pike (Esox lucius) and burbot (Lota lota)), was studied in the subarctic Pasvik watercourse (69 °N), northern Norway and Russia. All three species primarily occupied the benthic habitats in the watercourse. Perch and burbot exhibited distinct ontogenetic niche shifts in food resource use, perch changing from a dominance of zooplankton to zoobenthos to fish, and burbot from zoobenthos to fish. Fish prey dominated the diet of all the investigated size-classes of pike, but small-sized pike (<20 cm) were not represented in the sample. Fish prey size was positively related to predator size in all three species. Whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) was the dominant prey of pike and large-sized burbot and perch. Nine-spined sticklebacks (Pungitius pungitius) was also an important prey and appeared to be a dietary stepping-stone enhancing the transition from invertebrate feeding to consumption of large-sized whitefish prey for all three predators. A cluster analysis separated the different size groups of the three predator species into five functional feeding groups, most of them containing two or all three species. Within these feeding groups, and especially among the piscivorous size-classes, there was a strong and significant interspecific overlap in prey selection, and the dietary similarities between the species were in general much larger than the intraspecific similarities between ontogenetic stages. All three piscivorous species are important top predators in the aquatic food web of the watercourse, and their ontogenetic diet shifts and resource partitioning patterns generate a substantial food web complexity in this subarctic ecosystem.  相似文献

The northern pike (Esox lucius) is an important and selective piscivorethat chooses smaller prey than predicted from energy / timebudgets. In a laboratory experiment, we investigated pike predatorybehavior to explain this selectivity. Northern pike feedingon different prey sizes in aquaria were observed when foragingalone, when in the presence of chemical cues from similar-sizedor larger conspecifics, and when in the presence of conspecifics thatwere allowed to interact with the focal pike. The results showthat prey handling time increases with prey size and that theduration of manipulating and handling prey inflicts a risk ofexposure to cannibals and kleptoparasites on the pike. Therefore, the risk of falling victim to cannibals or kleptoparasites increaseswith prey size. Attracting and experiencing intraspecific interactorscan be regarded as major fitness costs. Chemical cues from foragingconspecifics have only minor effects on pike foraging behavior.Furthermore, the ability to strike and swallow prey head first improvespike predatory performance because failing to do so increases handlingtime. Our findings emphasize the increasing potential costswith large prey and explain previous contradictory suggestionson the underlying mechanisms of behavior, selectivity, and trophiceffects of northern pike predation.  相似文献
