Distress calls of mallard ducklings consist of a highly stereotyped series of notes. When two ducklings are simultaneously separated from the brood, they characteristically call in alternation. Each bird inhibits its calls while the other is vocalizing, thus preventing masking and facilitating localization by the hen. I examined whether exposure of ducklings to calls presented in a naturalistic alternating pattern affected subsequent responsiveness to them. Individual ducklings were exposed to either 40 s or 80 s of computer-controlled distress call playbacks, using an algorithm that mimicked the behavior of another duckling. Calls were presented only when the subject was silent and ended as soon as it began to vocalize. Each of these ducklings was paired with a ‘yoked’ control. Birds in these control groups experienced exactly the same pattern of playbacks as the ‘interactive’ birds, but the stimuli had no consistent relationship to their own vocal behavior. When the same calls were played back 24 h later, in a fixed pattern that was independent of the ducklings' behavior, birds that had received 80 s of prior interactive exposure were significantly more responsive than both their yoked controls and birds receiving only 40 s of such playbacks. This result suggests that interactive vocal experience, characteristic of natural communication, affects the subsequent perceptual sensitivity of ducklings.  相似文献

We study the relation of neural development, organization, and activity to behavior. We provide a model of the locomotive oscillator, a neural system supplying alternating stimulation to extensor and flexor muscles creating an oscillatory motion. We propose a protocol by which this neural system starting from unstructured, unconnected neural populations develops structure and function. The protocol is studied by both computer simulation and mathematical analysis. Our main results are 1 The locomotive oscillator self-organizes and maintains its organization, assuming certain properties of the neural populations. 2 Imperfections disturbing the functional adequacy of the neural populations may lead to the deterioration and disappearance of the oscillatory behavior. 3 The locomotive oscillator may fail to organize if the development is not staged in time.  相似文献

This paper examines the effects of anthropometry on body posture of trumpeters playing in standing position. Sixteen virtuosi trumpeters were photographed while hitting three notes (low C, high F and high F sustained) during performance of musical tasks. Initial standing posture and anthropometric data were recorded. Six body segment angles were computed and a vectorial sum was obtained to describe whole body posture in neutral and playing conditions. Horn angle and dental overbite were also computed. Earlier results showed that the musical task has no effect on playing posture. One-way ANOVA showed notable differences between the neutral posture and the note-related playing postures. A multiple regression model showed that in addition to the note effect, anthropometric variables, mainly neck length, explain the changes in playing posture. Horn angle is determined by the dental overbite. The importance of the anthropometric variables in playing the more demanding notes indicate that anthropometry may act to constrain trumpeters' performance.  相似文献

We model an N-player repeated prisoner's dilemma in which players are given traits (e.g., height, age, wealth) which, we assume, affect their behavior. The relationship between traits and behavior is unknown to other players. We then analyze the performance of "prejudiced" strategies--strategies that draw inferences based on the observation of some or all of these traits, and extrapolate the inferred behavior to other carriers of these traits. Such prejudiced strategies have the advantage of learning rapidly, and hence of being well adapted to rapidly changing conditions that might result, for example, from high migration or birth rates. We find that they perform remarkably well, and even systematically outperform both Tit-For-Tat and ALLD when the population changes rapidly.  相似文献

Focal degeneration of astrocytes in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Astrocytes emerge as key players in motor neuron degeneration in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Whether astrocytes cause direct damage by releasing toxic factors or contribute indirectly through the loss of physiological functions is unclear. Here we identify in the hSOD1(G93A) transgenic mouse model of ALS a degenerative process of the astrocytes, restricted to those directly surrounding spinal motor neurons. This phenomenon manifests with an early onset and becomes significant concomitant with the loss of motor cells and the appearance of clinical symptoms. Contrary to wild-type astrocytes, mutant hSOD1-expressing astrocytes are highly vulnerable to glutamate and undergo cell death mediated by the metabotropic type-5 receptor (mGluR5). Blocking mGluR5 in vivo slows down astrocytic degeneration, delays the onset of the disease and slightly extends survival in hSOD1(G93A) transgenic mice. We propose that excitotoxicity in ALS affects both motor neurons and astrocytes, favouring their local interactive degeneration. This new mechanistic hypothesis has implications for therapeutic interventions.  相似文献

Staining adult and embryonic leech ventral nerve cords with antibodies raised against the molluscan neuropeptides small cardioactive peptide B (SCP) and FMRFamide results in segment-specific and bilaterally asymmetric patterns of cell staining. One immunoreactive neuron, the RAS interneuron, is present in only four rostral segmental ganglia, while another, the CAS interneuron, is restricted to the four most caudal abdominal ganglia and tail. In addition to their segment-specific distributions, only one RAS or CAS cell is found in each segmental ganglion, and they alternate sides between adjacent ganglia (either L-R-L-R or R-L-R-L) with a fidelity of about 95%. This paper utilizes cell deletion techniques to investigate the determination of the asymmetric and alternating pattern of RAS and CAS neurons. We show that developmentally equivalent RAS and CAS homologs are present on both sides of the appropriate ganglia, and that within each ganglion one of the initially paired homologs loses the ability to assume the immunoreactive RAS or CAS fate 2-3 days after axonogenesis has begun. These experiments suggest that there is a competitive interaction between bilateral homologs which ensures that only one mature RAS/CAS neuron is formed per ganglion, and that contralateral RAS/CAS neurons are not required in the same or adjacent ganglia for the determination of the RAS or CAS developmental pathways. Nerve cord transections between ganglia in the CAS domain can alter the spatial pattern of CAS neuron determination, confirming that both bilateral homologs retain the ability to express neuropeptide until late embryonic stages, and suggesting that the alternating pattern of RAS/CAS cells requires communication between adjacent ganglia through the longitudinal connectives.  相似文献

We have converted genome-encoded protein sequences into musical notes to reveal auditory patterns without compromising musicality. We derived a reduced range of 13 base notes by pairing similar amino acids and distinguishing them using variations of three-note chords and codon distribution to dictate rhythm. The conversion will help make genomic coding sequences more approachable for the general public, young children, and vision-impaired scientists.  相似文献

Rho GTPases are important regulators of cellular behavior through their effects on processes such as cytoskeletal organization. Here we show interactions between Drosophila Rho1 and the adherens junction components alpha-catenin and p120(ctn). We find that while Rho1 protein is present throughout the cell, it accumulates apically, particularly at sites of cadherin-based adherens junctions. Cadherin and catenin localization is disrupted in Rho1 mutants, implicating Rho1 in their regulation. p120(ctn) has recently been suggested to inhibit Rho activity through an unknown mechanism. We find that Rho1 accumulates in response to lowered p120(ctn) activity. Significantly, we find that Rho1 binds directly to alpha-catenin and p120(ctn) in vitro, and these interactions map to distinct surface-exposed regions of the protein not previously assigned functions. In addition, we find that both alpha-catenin and p120(ctn) co-immunoprecipitate with Rho1-containing complexes from embryo lysates. Our observations suggest that alpha-catenin and p120(ctn) are key players in a mechanism of recruiting Rho1 to its sites of action.  相似文献

Absolute pitch (AP) is the ability to recognize a pitch, without an external reference. By surveying more than 600 musicians in music conservatories, training programs, and orchestras, we have attempted to dissect the influences of early musical training and genetics on the development of this ability. Early musical training appears to be necessary but not sufficient for the development of AP. Forty percent of musicians who had begun training at <=4 years of age reported AP, whereas only 3% of those who had initiated training at >=9 years of age did so. Self-reported AP possessors were four times more likely to report another AP possessor in their families than were non-AP possessors. These data suggest that both early musical training and genetic predisposition are needed for the development of AP. We developed a simple computer-based acoustical test that has allowed us to subdivide AP possessors into distinct groups, on the basis of their performance. Investigation of individuals who performed extremely well on this test has already led us to identify several families that will be suitable for studies of the genetic basis of AP.  相似文献

Background

The ability to separate two interleaved melodies is an important factor in music appreciation. This ability is greatly reduced in people with hearing impairment, contributing to difficulties in music appreciation. The aim of this study was to assess whether visual cues, musical training or musical context could have an effect on this ability, and potentially improve music appreciation for the hearing impaired.

Methods

Musicians (N = 18) and non-musicians (N = 19) were asked to rate the difficulty of segregating a four-note repeating melody from interleaved random distracter notes. Visual cues were provided on half the blocks, and two musical contexts were tested, with the overlap between melody and distracter notes either gradually increasing or decreasing.

Conclusions

Visual cues, musical training, and musical context all affected the difficulty of extracting the melody from a background of interleaved random distracter notes. Visual cues were effective in reducing the difficulty of segregating the melody from distracter notes, even in individuals with no musical training. These results are consistent with theories that indicate an important role for central (top-down) processes in auditory streaming mechanisms, and suggest that visual cues may help the hearing-impaired enjoy music.  相似文献

Motile eukaryotic cells migrate with directional persistence by alternating left and right turns, even in the absence of external cues. For example, Dictyostelium discoideum cells crawl by extending distinct pseudopods in an alternating right-left pattern. The mechanisms underlying this zig-zag behavior, however, remain unknown. Here we propose a new Excitable Cortex and Memory (EC&M) model for understanding the alternating, zig-zag extension of pseudopods. Incorporating elements of previous models, we consider the cell cortex as an excitable system and include global inhibition of new pseudopods while a pseudopod is active. With the novel hypothesis that pseudopod activity makes the local cortex temporarily more excitable--thus creating a memory of previous pseudopod locations--the model reproduces experimentally observed zig-zag behavior. Furthermore, the EC&M model makes four new predictions concerning pseudopod dynamics. To test these predictions we develop an algorithm that detects pseudopods via hierarchical clustering of individual membrane extensions. Data from cell-tracking experiments agrees with all four predictions of the model, revealing that pseudopod placement is a non-Markovian process affected by the dynamics of previous pseudopods. The model is also compatible with known limits of chemotactic sensitivity. In addition to providing a predictive approach to studying eukaryotic cell motion, the EC&M model provides a general framework for future models, and suggests directions for new research regarding the molecular mechanisms underlying directional persistence.  相似文献

Using a sample of 652 college students, we examined several implications of the hypothesis that the shape of the human penis evolved to enable males to substitute their semen for those of their rivals. The incidence of double mating by females appears sufficient to make semen displacement adaptive (e.g., one in four females acknowledge infidelity, one in eight admit having sex with two or more males in a 24-hour period, and one in 12 report involvement in one or more sexual threesomes with two males). We also document several changes in post-ejaculatory behavior (e.g., reduced thrusting, penis withdrawal, loss of an erection) which may have evolved to minimize displacement of the male’s own semen. Consistent with predictions derived from a theoretical model (Gallup and Burch 2006), we discovered that most females report waiting at least 48 hours following an instance of infidelity before resuming sex with their in-pair partners.  相似文献

This paper is about rules governing grooming sequences in blowflies. Time was divided exhaustively into eight grooming and two non-grooming states. Using a keyboard connected to a computer, the times of all transitions between states during 1 hr were recorded for each of six flies. There is a strong tendency for certain acts to alternate with others. A model of alternating choice ‘slots’ and determined slots is presented. Grooming acts fall into discrete bouts, each involving either the prothoracic legs or the metathoracic legs, but not both. A great majority of bouts contain an odd number of acts. The beginning and ending of a bout constitute a characteristic structure regardless of the length of the intervening middle period. Unconvincing evidence for hierarchical organization of grooming decisions is presented. Convincing evidence is presented that postural facilitation is involved in the control of grooming.  相似文献

Selective transport through the nuclear pore complex (NPC) requires nucleoporins containing natively unfolded phenylalanine-glycine (FG) domains. Several differing models for their dynamics within the pore have been proposed. We characterize the behavior of the FG nucleoporins in vivo using polarized fluorescence microscopy. Using nucleoporins tagged with green fluorescent protein along their FG domains, we show that some of these proteins are ordered, indicating an overall orientational organization within the NPC. This orientational ordering of the FG domains depends on their specific context within the NPC, but is independent of active transport and cargo load. For most nups, behavior does not depend on the FG motifs. These data support a model whereby local geometry constrains the orientational organization of the FG nups. Intriguingly, homologous yeast and mammalian proteins show conserved behavior, suggesting functional relevance. Our findings have implications for mechanistic models of NPC transport.  相似文献

The Adelgidae form a small group of insects in the Aphidoidea. They are cyclically parthenogenetic with host alternating, multiple-generation complex life cycles and are restricted to certain host genera in the Pinaceae. Species that host alternate always have Picea as the primary host where sexual reproduction and gall formation occur, and another genus in the Pinaceae as the secondary host where a series of parthenogenetic generations are produced. Other species that do not host alternate complete their entire life cycle on one host and only reproduce parthenogenetically. We studied relationships within Adelgidae using DNA sequences from the mitochondrial COI, COII, and cytb genes, and the nuclear EF1alpha gene. Analysis of the combined data resulted in a well-resolved phylogeny in which the major adelgid clades correspond neatly to their association with secondary host genera. Specialization on each secondary host genus occurred only once and was followed by diversification on the host genus. Molecular dating of divergence times in the Adelgidae suggest that diversification among host genera occurred in the Late Cretaceous and Early Tertiary when the Pinaceae genera were diverging. It is not clear, however, whether the Adelgidae and Pinaceae co-diversified because the relationships among the Pinaceae genera are not fully resolved. We discuss implications for adelgid taxonomy, life cycle evolution, and evolution of the interaction between adelgids and their host plants.  相似文献

Stem cells resident in adult tissues are principally quiescent, yet harbor enormous capacity for proliferation to achieve self renewal and to replenish their tissue constituents. Although a single hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) can generate sufficient primitive progeny to repopulate many recipients, little is known about the molecular mechanisms that maintain their potency or regulate their self renewal. Here we have examined the gene expression changes that occur over a time course when HSCs are induced to proliferate and return to quiescence in vivo. These data were compared to data representing differences between naturally proliferating fetal HSCs and their quiescent adult counterparts. Bioinformatic strategies were used to group time-ordered gene expression profiles generated from microarrays into signatures of quiescent and dividing stem cells. A novel method for calculating statistically significant enrichments in Gene Ontology groupings for our gene lists revealed elemental subgroups within the signatures that underlie HSC behavior, and allowed us to build a molecular model of the HSC activation cycle. Initially, quiescent HSCs evince a state of readiness. The proliferative signal induces a preparative state, which is followed by active proliferation divisible into early and late phases. Re-induction of quiescence involves changes in migratory molecule expression, prior to reestablishment of homeostasis. We also identified two genes that increase in both gene and protein expression during activation, and potentially represent new markers for proliferating stem cells. These data will be of use in attempts to recapitulate the HSC self renewal process for therapeutic expansion of stem cells, and our model may correlate with acquisition of self renewal characteristics by cancer stem cells.  相似文献

Two phenomena can be observed in the watercolor illusion: illusory color spreading and figure-ground organization. We performed experiments to determine whether the figure-ground effect is a consequence of the color illusion or due to an independent mechanism. Subjects were tested with displays consisting of six adjacent compartments--three that generated the illusion alternating with three that served for comparison. In a first set of experiments, the illusory color was measured by finding the matching physical color in the alternate compartments. Figureness (probability of 'figure' responses, 2AFC) of the watercolor compartments was then determined with and without the matching color in the alternate compartments. The color match reduced figureness, but did not abolish it. There was a range of colors in which the watercolor compartments dominated as figures over the alternate compartments although the latter appeared more saturated in color. In another experiment, the effect of tinting alternate compartments was measured in displays without watercolor illusion. Figureness increased with color contrast, but its value at the equivalent contrast fell short of the figureness value obtained for the watercolor pattern. Thus, in both experiments, figureness produced by the watercolor pattern was stronger than expected from the color effect, suggesting independent mechanisms. Considering the neurophysiology, we propose that the color illusion follows from the principles of representation of surface color in the visual cortex, while the figure-ground effect results from two mechanisms of border ownership assignment, one that is sensitive to asymmetric shape of edge profile, the other to consistency of color borders.  相似文献

Individuals tend to conform their behavior to that of the majority. Consequently, an individual's behavior is not always consistent with his or her attitude, and such inconsistency sometimes causes mental distress. Understanding the mechanism of sustaining inconsistency between attitude and behavior is a challenging problem from the viewpoint of evolutionary theory. We constructed an evolutionary game theory model in which each player has an attitude and behavior toward a single social norm, and the players' attitudes and behaviors are affected by three types of cultural transmission: vertical, oblique, and horizontal. We assumed that strategy is a combination of attitude and behavior and that the process of learning or transmitting the social norm depends on the life stage of each player. Adults play a coordination game in which players whose behaviors match those of the majority obtain a high payoff, which is diminished by any inconsistency between attitude and behavior. The adults' strategies are passed to newborns via vertical transmission, and the frequency of a newborn's replication of strategy is proportional to the corresponding adult's payoff. Newborns imitate behaviors of unrelated adults via oblique transmission. Juveniles change their attitudes or behaviors by observing other juveniles' behaviors or inferring other juveniles' attitudes (horizontal transmission). We conclude that the key factor for sustaining inconsistency between attitude and behavior is the ability of players to infer and imitate others' attitudes, and that oblique transmission promotes inconsistency.  相似文献
