Thirteen Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis canadensis) with clinical signs of psoroptic scabies were captured in Wyoming. Signs included droopy ears, depilation on the head and neck, and exudate in the ears. Mites were identified as either Psoroptes cervinus or P. equi. Two ewes with scabies at the time of original capture had no clinical signs of mite infection 1 and 2 yr later.  相似文献

In Lake Baikal Elodea canadensis Michx. was first observed at the end of the 1970's.Suggestions have been made as to the bringing of E. canadensis to Baikal by aquarists or by transport vehicles and transport together with fishes taken from lakes of the Urals where mass development of the plant was observed at the beginning of the present century. The spread of E. canadensis along Lake Baikal must be due to navigation, but natural factors also affect its spread.The quantitative biomass development of E. canadensis in various areas of the lake is reviewed, and discussed in relation to historical aspects of spread and regulation by environmental factors.The fast spread of E. canadensis, its high competitive quality and metabolic capacities for purifying sewage waters deserve attention.Expansion of E. canadensis may be referred to as a catastrophic phenomenon. Its effect has now covered practically the whole perimeter of Lake Baikal.  相似文献

Pollen morphology of Circaea canadensis (L.) Hill ssp. canadensis collected from sites in Oklahoma differs from that described in earlier reports on this taxon. The samples we observed had poorly developed viscin threads, many with slender connecting points. In the equatorial zones between apertures there were randomly dispersed and elevated tectal components. These features may be due to arrested development since they are present in early stages of development in related taxa.  相似文献

We determined the genome sequence of the type strain of Helicobacter canadensis, an emerging human pathogen with diverse animal reservoirs. Potential virulence determinants carried by the genome include systems for N-linked glycosylation and capsular export. A protein-based phylogenetic analysis places H. canadensis close to Wolinella succinogenes.Helicobacter canadensis is an emerging pathogen that has been isolated from four Canadian patients with diarrhea and an Australian patient with bacteremia (3, 10). Wild geese have been identified as a reservoir in Europe (12, 13), while in China, the organism has been isolated from the feces of wild rodents (5). H. canadensis has also been isolated from laboratory rabbits (11) and from Guinea fowl in France (8). Atypical isolates have been obtained from swine feces from The Netherlands and Denmark (6). To shed light on the virulence and colonization factors of H. canadensis and to reassess its phylogenetic status, we performed whole-genome sequencing of the type strain, H. canadensis strain MIT 98-5491/NCTC 13241.Single- and paired-end whole-genome shotgun sequencing was performed using 454 pyrosequencing technology, supplemented by Solexa sequencing. An initial assembly of the 454 single-end and paired-end data was created using a Newbler assembler (Roche), generating four scaffolds with an average size of 402 kb. The genome sequence was completed using a combination of BLASTX searches and analysis of the Solexa data, followed by confirmatory PCRs, PCR-assisted contig extension (1), and combinatorial PCR, with conventional and long-PCR protocols. Annotation was performed using GenDB (7).The genome of H. canadensis NCTC 13241 consists of a single circular chromosome 1,623,845 bp in length, with a G+C content of 34%. There are 1,535 protein-coding sequences (CDSs), 40 transfer RNAs, and three rRNA loci.Although phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences place H. canadensis in the genus Helicobacter (3), analysis of 23S rRNA sequences supports a clade containing H. canadensis and Wolinella succinogenes (2). Our own phylogenetic analysis using a concatenation of 482 conserved CDSs from the H. canadensis genome and related genomes provides strong support for a W. succinogenes/H. canadensis clade (data not shown), suggesting that the current taxonomy should be reevaluated.One hundred seventeen CDSs from H. canadensis have no detectable ortholog in eight other genome-sequenced epsilonproteobacteria. We found only one contiguous region of difference longer than 10 genes (ROD1; HCAN_0630-HCAN_0663). Most CDSs in ROD1 are of unknown function, although, curiously, the region carries three versions of asparagine synthetase and contains six homopolymeric tracts. A second region of difference (ROD2; HCAN_0479-HCAN_0496) shows homology to HHGI1, a pathogenicity island from Helicobacter hepaticus strain ATCC 51449 that contributes to virulence in H. hepaticus (4).The H. canadensis NCTC 13241 genome contains 29 potentially phase-variable genes with homopolymeric tracts, including several genes that, by homology, might be implicated in virulence, e.g., an immunoglobulin A protease (HCAN_0234) and two homologues of the vacuolating cytotoxin from Helicobacter pylori (HCAN_0457 and HCAN_714). The genome contains a capsular polysaccharide export locus similar to that in Campylobacter jejuni (9). Also, like C. jejuni, H. canadensis possesses genes encoding an N-linked glycosylation pathway, including two copies of PglB (HCAN_0729 and HCAN_0930).  相似文献

加拿大一枝黄花Solidago canadensis是原产于北美的菊科Asteraceae多年生草本植物, 上世纪30年代引入我国, 现广泛分布于我国东部地区的部分省市, 并已成为该区域的农业和环境杂草。为了预测加拿大一枝黄花在我国的潜在分布区, 本研究采用相同气候方法对其进行了估测。我们用加拿大一枝黄花的原产地——美国的气候参数作为参照, 将其与我国各地气象站的气候数据进行匹配。结果表明, 加拿大一枝黄花在我国的潜在分布区的纬度跨度为25°–50°, 所以其潜在的入侵区将远大于目前的实际分布区, 甚至东北的部分地区也将适宜于该物种的生长。据此, 我们建议相关管理部门应加强该物种的监测工作, 以防其进一步向目前入侵区以外的周边地区蔓延。  相似文献

Sphingolipid 1 and its corresponding beta-D-glucopyranoside derivative 2 have been isolated from the ethylacetate fraction of Conyza canadensis along with beta-sitosterol 3, stigmasterol 4, beta-sitosterol 3-O-beta-D-glucoside 5 and harmine 6, reported for the first time from this species. Summary The plasmolytic method and the triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTC) reaction were compared as criteria of vitality inAnacharis canadensis, following treatment with 7 different types of herbicides. In general there was good agreement between the two methods. Cells that were plasmolyzable exhibited the capacity to reduce TTC, and contrariwise. Maleic hydrazide, as an exception, inhibited the TTC reaction in varying degree according to concentration.Usually formazan first appeared on the cell walls. Later, it appeared as granules deposited in the cytoplasm or on chloroplast surfaces.The walls of cells in a plasmolyzed condition did not become colored; however, formazan was produced in the cytoplasm and on chloroplasts, the amount decreasing with increasing molarity of plasmolyticum. Cells deplasmolyzed before the TTC treatment showed the same inhibition of wall coloring as plasmolyzed cells.The observations suggest that inAnacharis considerable TTC-reducing activity is located at the outer surface of the protoplast. Plasmolytic inhibition of the TTC reaction inAnacharis may be due to disruption of the structural entities in the surface responsible for the reaction.  相似文献

Sanguinaria canadensis is a member of the Papaveraceae that normally has eight petals rather than four as is usual in the family. Using epi-illumination microscopy to study floral development, we show that the four additional petal primordia are initiated in positions that correspond to the first four stamen positions in species of the Papaveraceae with four petals. Also, these additional petal primordia share early developmental features with stamen primordia: at inception they are circular in outline, and the relationship between organ length and width while very young is similar. The developmental pathway of the additional petals combines both stamen and petal features: initially stamenlike in appearance, they develop into typical petals. The additional petals of S. canadensis can therefore be interpreted as homeotic because petal features are expressed in stamen positions. Organogenesis in the ‘Multiplex’ cultivar is similar to that of its wild progenitor, but during development all primordia in the androecial region become petals. This cultivar, as well as variants within natural populations, show that replacement of stamens with petals occurs within the species.  相似文献

Alveolar macrophages were obtained from Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis canadensis) and domestic sheep for the purpose of comparing pulmonary host defense mechanisms in the two species. Specific variables studied included (1) characterization of the cell types present in the lung, (2) alveolar macrophage phagocytic and bactericidal functions, (3) measurement of protein levels in lavage fluid, and (4) measurement of cortisol levels in lavage fluid. While phagocytic cell populations were similar between bighorn and domestic sheep, a significantly higher percentage of lymphocytes were present in bighorns than domestics (20% in bighorn versus 6% in domestic sheep). Significant differences were not observed in the phagocytic or bactericidal functions of macrophages between the two species. Significant differences were not observed in either lavage fluid protein levels or in cortisol levels.  相似文献

GC-MS of the essential oil prepared by hydrodistillation of the green parts of a specimen of Solidago canadensis collected near Katowice, Poland, revealed two new sesquiterpene hydrocarbons. Their EI mass spectra resembled the mass spectrum of beta-ylangene (1) but the retention indices of the new compounds differed markedly from this known compound. After isolation of the new compounds by preparative GC their investigation by one- and two-dimensional NMR techniques resulted in the identification of 6-epi-alpha-cubebene (2) (minor constituent, 1.5%) and 6-epi-beta-cubebene (3) (major constituent, 20.5%).  相似文献

Solidago canadensis, originating from the temperate region of North America, has expanded southward to subtropical regions through polyploidization. Here we investigated whether freezing tolerance of S. canadensis was weakened during expansion. Measurement of the temperature causing 50% ruptured cells (LT50) in 35 S. canadensis populations revealed ploidy-related differentiation in freezing tolerance. Freezing tolerance was found to decrease with increasing ploidy. The polyploid populations of S. canadensis had lower ScICE1 gene expression levels but more ScICE1 gene copies than the diploids. Furthermore, more DNA methylation sites in the ScICE1 gene promoter were detected in the polyploids than in the diploids. The results suggest that promoter methylation represses the expression of multi-copy ScICE1 genes, leading to weaker freezing tolerance in polyploid S. canadensis compared to the diploids. The study provides empirical evidence that DNA methylation regulates expression of the gene copies and supports polyploidization-driven adaptation to new environments.  相似文献

The alleviative effects of exogenous calcium on copper phytotoxicity were investigated in Elodea canadensis plants. There was a significant accumulation of Cu in the plants after their exposure to 0.01 mM Cu accompanied by many symptoms of toxicity. Increased uptake of Cu severely reduced content of photosynthetic pigments, soluble proteins, and free proline. The total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), reduced glutathione (GSH), and non-protein thiol (NP-SH) were severely suppressed in Cu-stressed plants resulting in a rapid increase in content of superoxide anion (O2 ·?), hydrogen peroxide, lipid peroxidation, and cell death. Simultaneous application of Ca markedly increased the content of photosynthetic pigments, soluble proteins, free proline, T-AOC, GSH, and NP-SH, and reduced oxidative damage as indicated by lowered content of MDA, O2 ·?, and H2O2; and decreased cell death. Furthermore, application of Ca reduced Cu uptake and effectively reversed the Cu-induced nutrient imbalance.  相似文献

为揭示加拿大一枝黄花(Solidago canadensis)种群扩散机制, 明确种子的脱落及风传扩散在其种群蔓延中的作用, 在人工环境下测定了不同湍流强度、风速和湿度处理下种子脱落的差异, 并对脱落种子与未脱落种子进行形态学特征对比。结果表明: 加拿大一枝黄花的种子脱落受湍流、风速和湿度等因素的共同影响。水平气流下种子的脱落阈值为5.1 m·s-1, 并随着风速增加, 种子的脱落率增加。与模拟水平气流相比, 模拟垂直气流下种子的脱落阈值显著偏小。相对于层流状态, 湍流的存在显著提高了种子的脱落率, 平均增幅超过300%; 但单纯提高湍流强度对种子脱落率的影响不显著。增加湿度则显著降低种子的脱落率。种子形态学特征对比结果表明, 脱落种子的冠毛数量和冠毛夹角显著高于未脱落种子。该研究结果为研究加拿大一枝黄花种子脱落规律和风传扩散机制提供了科学依据, 也为其他入侵性杂草种子的扩散机制及入侵过程提供了 借鉴。  相似文献
