In a wind‐tunnel study, the upwind flight and source location of female Aedes aegypti to plumes of carbon dioxide (CO2) gas and odour from human feet is tested. Both odour sources are presented singly and in combination. Flight upwind along the plumes is evident for both CO2 and odour from human feet when the odours are presented alone. Similarly, both odour sources are located by more than 70% of mosquitoes in less than 3 min. When both CO2 and odour from human feet are presented simultaneously in two different choice tests (with plumes superimposed or with plumes separated), there is no evidence that females orientate along the plume of CO2 and only a few mosquitoes locate its source. Rather, the foot odour plume is navigated and the source of foot odour is located by over 80% of female Ae. aegypti. When a female is presented a plume of CO2 within a broad plume of human foot odour of relatively low concentration, the source of CO2 is not located; instead, flight is upwind in the diffuse plume of foot odour. Although upwind flight by Ae. aegypti at long range is presumably induced by CO2 and the threshold of response to skin odours is lowered, our findings suggest that, once females have arrived near a prospective human host, upwind orientation and landing are largely governed by the suite of human odours, whereas orientation is no longer influenced by CO2.  相似文献

Effects of experience on parasitoid movement in odour plumes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Abstract. Insects commonly improve the effectiveness with which they locate biotic resources through learning, but the mechanism by which experience exerts its effects has rarely been studied in detail. The effect of oviposition experience on upwind movement of the eucoilid parasitoid, Leptopilina heterotoma (Thomson) (Hym.: Eucoilidae), in odour plumes of host microhabitats, was quantified with the use of a Kramer-type locomotion compensator. A 2h exposure to host Drosophila melanogaster larvae in either fermenting apple-yeast or decaying mushroom substrate (known to affect their preference for these odours in glasshouse and field choice experiments) had a number of effects on movement in plumes of each substrate. Females experienced with a particular substrate walked faster and straighter, made narrower turns and spent more time in upwind movement (i.e. toward the source) in a plume of odour from that substrate than in odour from an alternative substrate. Inexperienced females, by contrast, generally showed little or no significant difference in responses to alternative odours. In addition to affecting the mean values of movement parameters, experience also affected variability around those means. When walking speed or path straightness in an odour plume was increased by experience, variability among individuals was correspondingly decreased. The consequences of odour learning for microhabitat choice is discussed briefly.  相似文献

Abstract Airborne pheromone plumes in wind comprise filaments of odour interspersed with gaps of clean air. When flying moths intercept a filament, they have a tendency to surge upwind momentarily, and then fly crosswind until another filament is intercepted. Thus, the moment-to-moment contact with pheromone mediates the shape of a flight track along the plume. Within some range of favourable interception rates, flight tracks become straighter and are headed more due upwind. However, as the rate of interception increases, there comes a point at which the moth should not be able to discern discreet filaments but, rather, should perceive a 'fused signal'. At the extreme, homogeneous clouds of pheromone inhibit upwind progress by representative tortricids. In a wind tunnel, Cadra cautella (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) were presented with 10 ms pulses of pheromone at a repetition rate of 5, 10, 17 and 25/s and a continuous, internally turbulent plume. Pulse size and concentrations were verified with a miniature photoionization detector sampling surrogate odour, propylene, at 100 Hz. Male moths maintain upwind progress even at plumes of 25 filaments/s. Furthermore, moths exhibited greater velocities and headings more due upwind at 17 and 25 Hz than at the lower frequencies or with the continuous plume. It is hypothesized that either C. cautella possesses a versatile sensory system that allows the resolution of these rapidly pulsed pheromone plumes, or that this species does not require a 'flickering' signal to fly upwind.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The response of the predatory mite, Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot, to steep gradients of a volatile kairomone emitted by its prey, Tetranychus urticue Koch, was studied in a vertical air flow chamber. The orientation to wind direction was eliminated by using an olfactometer that had an air stream approaching the predator from below a gauze screen upon which the predator walked. The steep gradient of odour was obtained by putting a cylinder filled with prey-infested leaves vertically below the screen. Starved predators were arrested in the odour patch by walking more slowly and tortuously than well-fed predators. The latter mites did not show a significant ortho- or klinokinetic response to the presence of odour. Both well-fed and starved predators showed a chemotactic response to steep gradients at the border of the circular odour patch. Predators that happened to walk out of the patch, frequently turned back to it. This response is presumably based on idiothetic information about the predator's immediately previous walking directions, because it occurred in the odour-free zone after passing the steep gradient of prey odour. Right-about turns can help the predator to stay in static odour plumes with steep gradients at the borders. This type of plume is present only close to the odour source. Further away from the source the odour plume tends to move to and fro due to variation in wind direction. For the predator to keep track of these snaking plumes the right-about turns are unlikely to be of any value because the response is of short duration and because the response to a moving plume appeared to be inadequate; by moving the cylinder below the screen (and consequently the odour patch) it was found that the predator turned back even if the odour gradient was made to pass the predator in the same direction as that of the predator's movement.  相似文献

Spatial and temporal structures of pheromone plumes in fields and forests   总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11  
Wind‐borne odour stimuli from a small point‐source of pheromone are intermittent owing to the effects of atmospheric turbulence on the odour plume. The work reported here measures the characteristics of the intermittent stimulus in open fields and forests during typical daytime atmospheric conditions. To model the pheromone plume, negatively charged atmospheric ions were used as a tracer. They were released from an ion generator, and ion detectors measured the fluctuating flux of ions at positions up to 20 m downwind in the open field case and 10 m in the forest. In both the open field and in the forest, ion signals were highly intermittent, with a signal present only 20% of the time. Ion signals recorded in the forest consisted of bursts with gaps between them of at least three‐fold greater duration than those from the open field. In both environments, bursts generally each comprised a series of ‘spikes’, on average three in the field and seven in the forest. To validate the use of ionized air plumes as models of pheromone plumes, the antennae of male Lymantria dispar (gypsy moth) were used as detectors to quantify the plume of synthetic (+)‐disparlure emanating from a 2000 ng point source placed ≈ 10 cm from the ion source. A comparison of ion signals and EAGs (electronantennograms) suggests that the antennae respond to the main spikes within a burst, but no consistent relationship between the strength of the spikes and the magnitude of the EAG response was found. The average strengths of bursts in the ion detector signal decreased systematically as the distance from the ion generator to the ion detector increased. A similar trend, however, was not detected in the EAG response.  相似文献

The detection of food odour by the freshwater eels, Anguilla australis and Anguilla dieffenbachii released a behavioural response to flow that resulted in direct upstream movement toward the odour source. Changes in various orientation parameters were observed as eels neared the source. Eels had substantially lower swimming velocities and considerably more variable heading and course angles close to the odour source (≤0·9 m) than further away (>0·9 m). Observed changes in orientation parameters were primarily due to changes in the behaviour of a searcher following odour loss. Cross-stream movements were initiated when the eel moved beyond the lateral margins of the odour plume. The behavioural switch from odour-conditioned rheotaxis to cross-stream casting following odour loss occurred more frequently close to the odour source where the plume was most narrow. Odour-conditioned rheotaxis enables the searcher to move quickly and efficiently toward the odour source without the need to extract directional information from a highly intermittent and complex chemical signal.  相似文献

The pheromone-modulated upwind flight ofLymantria dispar males responding to different pheromone plume structures and visual stimuli designed to mimic trees was video recorded in a forest. Males flying upwind along pheromone plumes of similar structure generated tracks that were similar in appearance and quantitatively similar in almost all parameters measured, regardless of the experimentally manipulated visual stimuli associated with the pheromone source. Net velocities, ground speeds, and airspeeds of males flying in point-source plumes were slower than those of males flying in the wider, more diffuse plumes issuing from a cylindrical baffle. The mean track angle of males flying in plumes issuing from a point source was greater (oriented more across the wind) than that of males flying in plumes issuing from a transparent cylindrical baffle. Males flying in point-source plumes also turned more frequently and had narrower tracks overall than males responding to plumes from a cylindrical baffle. These data suggest thatL. dispar males orienting to pheromone sources (i.e., calling females) associated with visible vertical cylinders (i.e., trees) use predominantly olfactory cues to locate the source and that the structure of the pheromone plume markedly affects the flight orientation and the resultant track.  相似文献

Wind speed effects on odour source location by tsetse flies (Glossina)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Abstract. Tsetse flies (mainly Glossina pallidipes Aust.) were captured by various means at sources of artificial host odour in Zimbabwe and Kenya. Their rates of arrival and flight directions were compared with simultaneous data on the wind's speed and direction, on time-scales ranging from 1 s to 30 min. It was predicted that because increasing wind speed up to 1 m s-1 straightens out the airflow (Brady et al. , 1989) it will straighten out odour plumes, make them easier to navigate, and should therefore increase the rate of arrival of flies at an odour source. In the event, the relationship proved to be more complex, with both positive and negative correlations of arrival rate on wind speed. It seems there is a bimodal relationship: odour source finding is positively related to increasing wind speed in weak winds up to ∼0.5 m s-1 (presumably as the odour plume straightens out), but is negatively related to increasing wind speed in strong winds above ∼1.0 m s-1 (presumably due to increasing turbulence breaking up the odour plume).  相似文献

Abstract. We investigated the behavioural response of male Helicoverpa zea (Boddie) to the fine-scale structure of an odour plume experimentally modified in a wind tunnel by using an air-pulsing device. Male H. zea flew upwind to pulsed filaments of a binary pheromone blend of (Z)-11-hexadecanal (Z11-16:Ald) and (Z)-9-hexadecanal (Z9-16:Ald) in the ratio of 20:1. Sustained upwind flight in experimentally altered intermittent plumes was dependent on concentration, as well as the frequency of generation of odour filaments. At a loading of 10μg of the major pheromone component, Zll-16:Ald, which gave an emission rate of approximately that released by a female H. zea , sustained upwind flight and source contact correlated positively with filament delivery rate, becoming significant at a minimum filament delivery rate of 2/s. Decreases in upwind progress and source location were recorded at a loading of 1 μg of Z11-16:Ald. At this suboptimal dosage, a high filament generation rate of 10/s was necessary for significant upwind progress and source contact. When an interspecific compound: (Z)-11-hexadecenyl acetate (Z11-16:OAc), was added to the attractive pheromone binary aldehyde blend of H. zea at a proportion of 10% of the major pheromone component, and pulsed from the same source, there was a significant reduction in sustained upwind progress and source location by males, indicating that Z11-16:OAc is antagonistic to the upwind progress of H. zea. However, Z11-16:OAc was less antagonistic when its filaments were isolated and alternated with pheromone filaments, indicating a strong effect of the synchronous arrival of odour filaments on the antenna needed for antagonism of upwind flight.  相似文献

Abstract. Mature female Brachymeria intermedia (Hymenoptera: Chalcididae) were conditioned to fly towards vanilla odour in a wind tunnel. We analysed the tracks of wasps flying along turbulent plumes of either host odour (pupae of the gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar) or vanilla odour, along either a ribbon plume or a turbulent plume of vanilla odour, and before and after plume removal. Wasps flew in similar shallow zigzagging tracks along the turbulent plume of host and vanilla odours. When the plume was removed while wasps were flying upwind along a turbulent plume of vanilla odour, wasps either maintained an upwind course or drifted sideways, alternating upwind and downwind courses before turning around and flying downwind. No wasp casted upon loss of the plume.  相似文献

Insect olfactory orientation along odour plumes has been studied intensively with respect to pheromonal communication, whereas little knowledge is available on how plant odour plumes (POPs) affect olfactory searching by an insect for its host plants. The primary objective of this review is to examine the role of POPs in the attraction of insects. First, we consider parameters of an odour source and the environment which determine the size, shape and structure of an odour plume, and we apply that knowledge to POPs. Second, we compare characteristics of insect pheromonal plumes and POPs. We propose a ‘POP concept’ for the olfactory orientation of insects to plants. We suggest that: (i) an insect recognises a POP by means of plant volatile components that are encountered in concentrations higher than a threshold detection limit and that occur in a qualitative and quantitative blend indicating a resource; (ii) perception of the fine structure of a POP enables an insect to distinguish a POP from an unspecific odorous background and other interfering plumes; and (iii) an insect can follow several POPs to their sources, and may leave the track of one POP and switch to another one if this conveys a signal with higher reliability or indicates a more suitable resource. The POP concept proposed here may be a useful tool for research in olfactory‐mediated plant–insect interactions.  相似文献

Submarine hydrothermal vents perturb the deep-ocean microbiome by injecting reduced chemical species into the water column that act as an energy source for chemosynthetic organisms. These systems thus provide excellent natural laboratories for studying the response of microbial communities to shifts in marine geochemistry. The present study explores the processes that regulate coupled microbial-geochemical dynamics in hydrothermal plumes by means of a novel mathematical model, which combines thermodynamics, growth and reaction kinetics, and transport processes derived from a fluid dynamics model. Simulations of a plume located in the ABE vent field of the Lau basin were able to reproduce metagenomic observations well and demonstrated that the magnitude of primary production and rate of autotrophic growth are largely regulated by the energetics of metabolisms and the availability of electron donors, as opposed to kinetic parameters. Ambient seawater was the dominant source of microbes to the plume and sulphur oxidisers constituted almost 90% of the modelled community in the neutrally-buoyant plume. Data from drifters deployed in the region allowed the different time scales of metabolisms to be cast in a spatial context, which demonstrated spatial succession in the microbial community. While growth was shown to occur over distances of tens of kilometers, microbes persisted over hundreds of kilometers. Given that high-temperature hydrothermal systems are found less than 100 km apart on average, plumes may act as important vectors between different vent fields and other environments that are hospitable to similar organisms, such as oil spills and oxygen minimum zones.  相似文献

Abstract.The stimuli and mechanisms mediating host location and host choice by the bee mite, Varroa jacobsoni (Oudemans), are currently unknown. It is shown that Varroa can use single clean‐air puffs and bee‐odour plumes in a wind tunnel as directional cues. Varroa turned nearly straight upwind in response to single 0.1‐s puffs of clean air directed at 90° to the their anterior‐posterior axis. They turned significantly further to their left side (104°) than to their right (76°), but showed no difference in latency to initiation of the turns (means of 63.3 ms vs. 62.6 ms, respectively). They also followed bee‐odour plumes in a wind tunnel. When released in odour and control plumes mid‐way between the plume's origin and the downwind end of the tunnel, mites responding to bee‐odour walked upwind in, or along the edge of, the odour plume with 38% making contact with the odour delivery tube; mites in clean air did not walk upwind along the air stream, and none made contact with the air delivery tube. Walking speeds were not different between the bee‐odour and control groups (0.28 vs. 0.29 cm s–1); there were also no differences in the turning rates (96.85 vs. 97.16 deg s–1 and 388.08 vs. 379.18 deg cm–1, respectively). ABSTRACT. Studies were conducted in Zimbabwe of the responses of Glossina morsitans morsitans Westwood and Glossina pallidipes Austen to various host odours using either arrangements of electrocuting nets or visual observations. Tsetse flying upwind in a plume of carbon dioxide, acetone and octenol turned downwind upon flying into a plume of acetone or octenol, but did not turn upon flying into a plume of carbon dioxide. They also turned in response to a transient decline in odour concentration. Tsetse landed on the ground in the vicinity of a source of natural odour or artificial odour containing carbon dioxide but not at sources of acetone or octenol only. The proportion of female G.pallidipes caught at a source of natural odour (37%) was significantly different from that caught at a source of synthetic odour (17%). Resting tsetse stimulated by natural odour took off sooner than non-stimulated flies and had a strong upwind bias in the direction of take off. Tsetse stimulated with artificial odour did not take off sooner than non-stimulated flies. It is suggested that there is an unidentified components) of ox odour that activates resting tsetse.  相似文献

Male Cadra cautella were presented with five heterogeneous pheromone clouds (created from source doses of 0, 0.01, 1, 100, and 10 000 ng) with and without superimposed plumes of either clean air or sex pheromone in a wind tunnel. Moths provided with the lowest doses of background clouds without a superimposed plume did not fly upwind. Moths provided with higher doses of background clouds, with or without superimposed air plumes, increased their track, course, and drift angles (i.e., their zigzags headed more towards crosswind) with increased dose, but slowed their velocity. No differences in flight track parameters were observed for moths provided with a superimposed pheromone plume, regardless of the background cloud dose. Moreover, moths were able to locate the source of superimposed air plumes in the highest background dose, and of superimposed pheromone plumes in any background dose. The significance of these results is discussed in the context of mating disruption.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Studies were made in Zimbabwe of the propensity of Glossina pallidipes Austen and G. morsitans morsitans Westwood to divert from flying upwind in plumes of host odour to various visual features (termed targets). Using various arrangements of electrocuting nets with targets placed downwind of an odour source it was found that 45% diverted to a square target, c. 30% diverted to a black vertical oblong and there was no significant diversion to a bark-coloured vertical oblong that simulated the bole of a tree. The relative propensity of tsetse to divert to variously coloured targets decreased in the order: black = blue > red > yellow; for different shapes it decreased in the order: circle > square > horizontal oblong = vertical oblong. Changes in the composition or concentration of the odour, or loss of contact with it, did not markedly affect the percentage that diverted. Tsetse that diverted to a target and subsequently flew away from it showed an upwind bias in the presence of odour. In the absence of odour there was a slight crosswind bias. If these crosswind fliers then flew into a plume of host odour they turned c. 50 upwind.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The flight pattern of mated female navel orangeworm moths, Amyelois transitella (Walker), responding to odour from potential larval hosts is zigzagging upwind flight. However, at times these moths are capable of flying nearly directly upwind towards the odour source (track angles near 0). This response indicates that these females are capable of very accurate anemotactic control of their heading or course angle, since small angular errors in this measure would translate into larger deviations from direct upwind flight. Males of this species exhibit flight patterns similar to those of females, including track angles clustered about 0 when flying upwind to a source of the female-produced pheromone, but under these experimental conditions they flew with a higher average airspeed than the females. When females lose contact with an odour plume they initiate a well-defined programme of cross-wind counterturning or casting, which may normally increase their chances of retrieving contact with that plume when the wind direction shifts. The resultant track angles of females increase significantly by 0.8 s after plume loss, indicating that the female has initiated changes in both her course angle and airspeed. By 1 s after plume loss the females' track angles are no longer unimodally distributed about 0, but are bimodally distributed about -90 and +90. Males responded more rapidly to the loss of a pheromone plume, demonstrating a significant change in track angle 0.4 s after plume loss. Overall, female and male A.transitella exhibited remarkably similar anemotactic flight manoeuvres during upwind flight to odour sources as well as after plume loss.  相似文献

Food search behaviour in cod, Gadus morhua, was studied by means of a stationary positioning system. Six fish in a fjord in northern Norway were tagged in situ by allowing them to shallow bait-wrapped acoustic tags, and their swimming behaviour was continuously recorded. The fish exhibited a diel activity rhythm, with higher swimming speeds and a larger range during the day than at night. Chemically mediated food search was studied in periods of both high and low activity by setting a string of baits in the morning and at night. During the period of high activity, more fish localized the baits (70 versus 45% of the observations) and the time to localization was 50% shorter, indicating that high swimming activity increased the probability of encountering the odour plume and the odour source. No diel variations in the response threshold to olfactory stimuli were found, as the proportion of fish in the odour plume that responded rheotactically, and their response distances were similar in the two periods (240 and 227 m respectively). Cod performed area-restricted searches on encountering the string of baits during the day. The probability of cod detecting prey by taste receptors, encountering the odour plume of prey or localizing a stationary food source after olfactory stimulation should be relatively independent of light, and this could explain why cod were active throughout the 24 h cycle. On the other hand, the visual detection distance and the ability to capture active prey are influenced by the light level, resulting in higher activity during the day.  相似文献

The pheromone-sensitive receptor cells of male moth antennae are capable of detecting the rapid changes in stimulus intensity encountered in natural pheromone odour plumes. We investigated temporal response characteristics of the two receptor cell types of the sensillum trichodeum of female Bombyx mori, which are most sensitive to benzoic acid and 2,6-dimethyl-5-heptene-2-ol (DMH), respectively. The cells were repetitively stimulated with 50-ms pulses of benzoic acid and (±)-linalool, an effective mimic of DMH, at various pulse rates and different stimulus intensities. By recording receptor potentials and nerve impulses we demonstrated that both receptor cell types were able to follow stimulus pulses at least up to eight pulses per sec, with a more pronounced modulation of the responses in the DMH cell. The resolution capability of the two cell types showed little dependence on stimulus intensity. In their ability to resolve pulsed odour stimuli, the receptor cells for benzoic acid and DMH were as good as pheromone receptor cells.  相似文献

The effects of structure, concentration and composition of host‐odour plumes on catch of female Anopheles gambiae Giles sensu stricto and Aedes aegypti (L.) (Diptera: Culicidae) were investigated in a dual‐choice olfactometer. We demonstrate that the fine‐scale structure of host‐odour plumes modulates capture of An. gambiae and Ae. aegypti. In both species homogeneous skin‐odour plumes result in trap entry, whereas homogeneous CO2 plumes reduce trap catch. Reduced trap catch also result from combining skin odour with a homogeneous CO2 plume. Trap capture rates in homogeneous CO2 plumes were concentration‐dependent and differed between the two species. Electric nets placed in front of the trap entrances intercepted mosquitoes before they could enter the traps. This showed that An. gambiae flew along CO2 plumes, but did not enter the traps. Survivorship analysis of the trap‐entry times of Ae. aegypti indicated interactions between the time until capture and treatment. The assay's duration therefore can alter the distribution in a dual‐choice olfactometer.  相似文献
