Little research has been conducted on effects of iteroparous anadromous fishes on Arctic lakes. We investigated trophic ecology, fish growth, and food web structure in six lakes located in Nunavut, Canada; three lakes contained anadromous Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) whereas three lakes did not contain Arctic charr. All lakes contained forage fishes and lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush; top predator). Isotope ratios (δ13C, δ15N) of fishes and invertebrates did not differ between lakes with and without anadromous Arctic charr; if anadromous Arctic charr deliver marine-derived nutrients and/or organic matter to freshwater lakes, these inputs could not be detected with δ13C and/or δ15N. Lake trout carbon (C):nitrogen (N) and condition were significantly higher in lakes with Arctic charr (C:N = 3.42, K = 1.1) than in lakes without Arctic charr (C:N = 3.17, K = 0.99), however, and ninespine stickleback (Pungitius pungitius) condition was significantly lower in lakes with Arctic charr (K = 0.58) than in lakes without Arctic charr (K = 0.64). Isotope data indicated that pre-smolt and resident Arctic charr may be prey for lake trout and compete with ninespine stickleback. Linear distance metrics applied to isotope data showed that food webs were more compact and isotopically redundant in lakes where Arctic charr were present. Despite this, lake trout populations in lakes with Arctic charr occupied a larger isotope space and showed greater inter-individual isotope differences. Anadromous Arctic charr appear to affect ecology and feeding of sympatric freshwater species, but effects are more subtle than those seen for semelparous anadromous species.  相似文献

Major nutrients (N and P) and phytoplankton from 19 large lakes from southern (61°) to northern (69°) Finland were analyzed to detect long-term trends and regional differences. The data sets from June, July and August cover the period from the early 1980s to the present. Altogether >700 phytoplankton and >4000 N, P and Chl a results were used for the study. In 40% of the lakes, the total phosphorus (TP) concentration decreased significantly and in >25% of the lakes a significant reduction was found in the total nitrogen (TN) concentration. At the same time, the phytoplankton biomass declined only in 15% of the lakes and the long-term trends in chlorophyll a more often increased than decreased. A clear gradient from southern to northern Finland and western to eastern Finland was found in the phytoplankton biomass. During the study period, the biomasses of cyanobacteria and centrales (diatoms) decreased whilst there was an increase in the biomass of pennales (diatoms) in one-third of the lakes. The proportion of chlorophytes in the total biomass also increased in >20% of the study lakes. In southern and western Finland, the total biomass and the contribution of cyanobacteria were higher. Centrales made a higher contribution to the total biomass in the north. Pennales and chlorophytes were less abundant and chrysophytes more abundant in the east. Differences in the community composition reflected the gradients in the total nutrients, and particularly in TP. The observations support the assumed role of phosphorus as the key limiting nutrient in large Finnish lakes irrespective of lake′s location. The N:P ratio proved to be a poor predictor of cyanobacteria occurrence in the study lakes.  相似文献

We investigated the role of autochthonous and terrestrial carbon in supporting aquatic food webs in the Canadian High Arctic by determining the diet of the dominant primary consumer, aquatic chironomids. These organisms were studied in fresh waters on 3 islands of the Arctic Archipelago (~74–76°N) including barren polar desert watersheds and a polar oasis with lush meadows. Stomach content analysis of 578 larvae indicated that chironomids primarily ingested diatoms and sediment detritus with little variation among most genera. Carbon and nitrogen stable isotope mixing models applied to 2 lakes indicated that benthic algae contributed 68–95% to chironomid diet at a polar desert site and 70–78% at a polar oasis site. Detritus, originating from either phytoplankton or terrestrial sources, also contributed minor amounts to chironomid diet (0–32%). Radiocarbon measurements for the 2 lakes showed that old terrestrial carbon did not support chironomid production. Carbon stable isotope ratios of chironomids in other High Arctic lakes provided further dietary evidence that was consistent with mixing model results. These findings indicate that, in the Canadian High Arctic, chironomids (and fish that consume them) are supported primarily by benthic algae in both polar desert and oasis lakes. In contrast, our review of carbon flow studies for lakes in other Arctic regions of North America shows that terrestrial carbon and phytoplankton can be important energy sources for consumers. This study provides a baseline to detect future climate-related impacts on carbon pathways in High Arctic lakes.  相似文献

Little is known of the wider Antarctic distribution of the upper fast ice community now comprehensively described from McMurdo Sound. We determined the fast ice protist community at Davis Station, East Antarctica and compared it with that of McMurdo Sound. As at McMurdo Sound, Davis fast ice is characterised by extreme and transitory salinities (96–2.5 psu) and temperatures (−4.5 to −0.1°C) during the spring/summer transition. Both communities are dominated by Polarella glacialis (an autotrophic dinoflagellate), chrysophytes and their life cycle stages. Furthermore, the physical parameters of brine temperature and salinity at which these successions occurred approximated those of McMurdo Sound. The high degree of similarity between the communities from the geographically disparate locations indicates that this community type has a circum-Antarctic distribution. Confirming the areal extent and seasonality of this community type will assist in future predictions of sea ice productivity.  相似文献

The horizontal and vertical distribution and the abundance of ostracods, hyperiids (amphipods) and euphausiids in the Greenland Sea along a transect parallel 74°45′N (from 15°45′E to 08°30′W) are described. The samples were taken by RV “Meteor” in late autumn of 1988. 8 species of the above named groups have been recorded in two different water masses which were touched by the transect. 5 stations were situated in the realm of the Atlantic waters of the Spitsbergen Current. HereDiscoconchoecia elegans, Meganyctiphanes norvegica, andThemisto compressa are indicators for the southern Atlantic water. 6 stations belong to the Arctic area dominated by Arctic Surface Water, whereBoroecia borealis, Themisto abyssorum, Thysanoessa longicaudata, andThysanoessa inermis are quite abundant as borealsubarctic species, whereasThemisto libellula is a true species of pure Arctic water.

We examined the sub-ice algal community in the Chukchi Sea during June 1998 using a remotely operated vehicle (ROV). Ice algae were observed on the under-ice surface at all ten stations (from 70°29′N to 72°26′N; 162°00′W to 153°56′W) and varied in abundance and distribution from small aggregations limited to depressions in the ice to nets, curtains and strands of Melosira. There was no relationship between percent cover of sub-ice algae and physical factors at the kilometer scale, but at the scale of individual ice floes the percent cover of sub-ice algae was positively correlated with distance from the floe edge and negatively correlated with snow depth. A significant positive relationship between the concentration of sediment pigments and percent cover of sub-ice could indicate a coupling between ice algal and benthic systems. Pieces of ice algae that appeared to be Melosira were observed on the seafloor to a depth of over 100 m and cells or spores of obligate ice algal taxa were collected from sediments from 44-m to 1,000-m deep. The large biomass of sub-ice algae observed at many stations in the Chukchi Sea and the presence of ice algae on the seafloor indicates that the distribution and abundance of sub-ice algae needs to be understood if we are to evaluate the role of ice algae in the Arctic marine ecosystem.  相似文献

Cyanobacterial 16S ribosomal RNA gene diversity was examined in a benthic mat on Fildes Peninsula of King George Island (62o09′54.4′′S, 58o57′20.9′′W), maritime Antarctica. Environmental DNA was isolated from the mat, a clone library of PCR-amplified 16S rRNA gene fragments was prepared, and amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis (ARDRA) was done to assign clones to seven groups. Low cyanobacterial diversity in the mat was suggested in that 83% of the clones were represented by one ARDRA group. DNA sequences from this group had high similarity with 16S rRNA genes of Tychonema bourrellyi and T. bornetii isolates, whose geographic origins were southern Norway and Northern Ireland. Cyanobacterial morphotypes corresponding to Tychonema have not been reported in Antarctica, however, this morphotype was previously found at Ward Hunt Lake (83oN), and in western Europe (52oN). DNA sequences of three of the ARDRA groups had highest similarity with 16S rDNA sequences of the Tychonema group accounting for 9.4% of the clones. Sequences of the remaining three groups (7.6%) had highest similarity with 16S rRNA genes of uncultured cyanobacteria clones from benthic mats of Lake Fryxell and fresh meltwater on the McMurdo Ice Shelf.  相似文献

Algae and the associated macrofauna in two Icelandic intertidal ecosystems under cold and warm influence, respectively, were studied with respect to algae-macrofauna relationships and a possible effect of temperature on community structure. Two sites in Iceland were selected, Sandgerdi ligthhouse (64°8′N 22°40′W) on the southwestern coast, and Grimsey Island (66°33′N 18°04′W), in the north, on the Arctic Circle, where sea temperature is considerably lower (5° approximately). The biomass of algae and the number of species of algae and macrofauna were higher in Sandgerdi than in Grimsey, and the patterns of diversity, evenness, biomass and abundance also differed between the sites. In the intertidal zone of Sandgerdi, a total of 28 species of algae and 45 species of macrofauna were identified whereas only 16 algal species and 27 macrofaunal species were found in Grimsey. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) using algal biomass as the environmental variable were conducted, and revealed significant relationships between algae composition and the associated macrofauna; some macrofauna taxa showed specific trophic or refuge relationships with algal species. According to the CCA, Corallina officinalis showed the highest correlation with macrofaunal assemblages in both study sites. However, correlations between macrofauna and other algae differed between Grimsey and Sandgerdi. The present study, together with additional observations in Greenland waters, shows a general decrease of species richness and diversity towards the north which may primarily be due to the temperature regime.  相似文献

Community structure and diversity patterns of pelagic copepods were investigated for the coastal areas and in the marine lakes of the Palau islands in the West Pacific. We conducted field surveys during 2004–2007 and collected zooplankton samples from eight coastal areas and 16 marine lakes. The marine lakes in the islands of Palau are limnologically classified into two types, meromictic and holomictic lakes. Species diversity indices (Margalef’s species richness d′, Shannon–Wiener index H′, and Simpson’s dominance) were measured at each sampling site. The copepod community structure was analyzed using multivariate analyses, hierarchical cluster analysis, and non-metric multidimensional scaling (MDS) from the PRIMER package. A total of 36 copepod taxa were identified to the genus or species level from Calanoida, Cyclopoida, Harpacticoida, and Poecilostomatoida. Multivariate analysis based on the Bray–Curtis similarity index revealed that copepod assemblages could be classified into three different groups according to their habitat: (I) meromictic lakes, (II) holomictic lakes with an exceptionally shallow and flat basin (type A holomictic lakes), (III) holomictic lakes with a deep basin (type B holomictic lakes), and all coastal areas. The meromictic lakes were characterized by markedly decreased species diversity (d′ = 0.15, H′ = 0.41) in which only two brackish-water species, Bestiolina similis and Oithona dissimilis, were dominant. Type A holomictic lakes were characterized by relatively low levels of species diversity (d′ = 1.25, H′ = 1.35). In contrast, type B holomictic lakes were characterized by relatively high levels of species diversity, which was comparable to that of coastal areas. This result indicated that zooplankton assemblages in the type B holomictic lakes were closely related to a coastal community. The present study showed that the species diversity of pelagic copepods varies according to the level of isolation and the local environmental conditions for each marine lake.  相似文献

Four thousand eight hundred years ago hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) populations were decimated throughout eastern North America. We have studied the effects of this loss from the terrestrial community on three Southern Ontario lakes: Little Round Lake, Sunfish Lake, and McKay Lake. This study includes the use of cladocerans, diatoms, chrysophytes, and bacterial pigments to assess the limnologic changes that occurred in these lakes. Each lake experienced a change in trophic status that coincided with the loss of hemlock from its catchment, but the change in the aquatic biota was different in each lake. The lakes' size may have been the most influential factor governing the response to this terrestrial disturbance.  相似文献

The distribution of archaeal amoA and 16S rRNA genes was evaluated in two marine-derived, meromictic lakes in the Canadian High Arctic: Lake A and Lake C1 on the northern coast of Ellesmere Island. The amoA gene was recorded in both lakes, with highest copy numbers in the oxycline. Sequence analysis showed that amoA from the two lakes shared 94% similarity, indicating at least two phylogenetically distinct clusters. Clone libraries of archaeal 16S rRNA genes from Lake A revealed strong vertical differences in archaeal community diversity and composition down the water column. The oxic layer was dominated by one group of Euryarchaeota affiliated to the Lake Dagow Sediment (LDS) cluster. This group was absent from the oxycline, which had an extremely low archaeal diversity of two phylotypes. Both belonged to the Crenarchaeota Marine Group I (MGI), the marine group that has been linked to archaeal amoA ; however, there was a low ratio of amoA to MGI copy numbers, suggesting that many MGI Archaea did not carry the amoA gene. The anoxic zone contained representatives of the RC-V (Rice Cluster-V) and LDS clusters of Euryarchaeota. These results show the strong vertical differentiation of archaeal communities in polar meromictic lakes, and they suggest archaeal nitrification within the oxycline of these highly stratified waters.  相似文献

Acidification of lakes takes place when pH of rainwater is less than 4.5 and the catchments lie on sensitive geology. Both conditions are met for most lakes in Bohemia and Slovakia. Since 1978 we have studied mountain lakes in the Sumava and in the High Tatra Mountains. In Šumava the three lakes under study are of glacial origin. The catchments are small, with steep sides covered by spruce. The bedrocks are biotite-rich paragneiss, together with gneiss, quartzite and granite. In summer 1936 surface pH was 5.7–6.9 in the Lake Čertovo and 6.9–7.0 in the Lake Černé. Now the pH values are 4.3–4.8 in the two lakes and in the Lake Prášilské as well. Old reports on zooplankton are from the years 1871, 1892–96, 1935–37, 1947 and 1960. Since 1979 we have not found any planktonic Crustacea in the lakes Černé and Čertovo. Lake Prášilské is inhabited by Daphnia longispina and Cyclops abyssorum. In July 1989 the pH values were 4.4, 4.7 and 4.7, concentrations of labile monomeric Al were 0.83, 0.68 and 0.24 mg l-1 in the lakes Čertovo, Černé and Prašilské, respectively. High levels of toxic Al compounds might be responsible for the extinction of planktonic Crustacea in the lakes Čertovo and Černé. All the three lakes are void of fish at present. In the High Tatra Mts. we examined more than 40 lakes above timberline in altitudes 1612–2145 m. They are all clearwater, naturally fishless lakes. The bedrock is granite. Owing to different levels of calcium the lakes are now in different stages of acidification. According to recent changes in the zooplankton they can be divided into three groups: (1) Species composition of planktonic Crustacea has not changed. (2) Planktonic Crustacea were present until 1973 but are absent now. (3) From the original species of Crustacea only Chydorus sphaericus is present. The three groups are well separated along the gradients of calcium, ANC and pH. They can be identified with the Henriksen's bicarbonate (our group 1), intermediate (our group 2) and acid (our group 3) lakes. We suppose that in the process of acidification the lakes of the group (2) have been shifted from oligotrophy to ultraoligotrophy.  相似文献

Variation at eight microsatellite loci was studied in Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus complex from five Transbaikalian mountain lakes. Samples from three lakes included two sympatric charr forms (dwarf and small) differing in trophic specialization, morphology and life cycle parameters. Sympatric forms were genetically closer to each other than to charr from other lakes which evidences their independent origin in each of these lakes as the result of sympatric speciation. In each lake, gene pools of sympatric forms were segregated to a different degree (estimates of F ST varying from 0.030–0.184 and those of ρ ST varying from 0.119–0.359). Hierarchical analysis of allelic frequencies variance (AMOVA) in Arctic charr from Lake Baikal, the Vitim, and the Olekma basins showed that variation among and within these basins accounted for 19.5% of the interpopulational variance each. In the AMOVA design, investigating differences among sympatric forms in three lakes these differences accounted for 7.1% of the total variance.  相似文献

【目的】研究安徽某铁矿不同矿山废水库中微生物群落结构特征及其影响因素。【方法】对比分析了该铁矿3个大型废水库的地球化学特征,并用高通量测序技术研究了水体中微生物群落组成,进而用统计学方法解析了环境因子对微生物群落结构的影响。【结果】3个废水库中有2个为酸性,1个为中性,理化性质有明显的差异。近年形成的塌方采场废水库(TF) pH仅为2.55±0.01,Fe浓度高达154.95±0.78mg/L,SO_4~(2–)浓度为3374.86±3.81mg/L;形成于20世纪70年代的排土场废水库(PT)酸性略弱(pH 2.9±0.02),Fe浓度(34.57±4.00 mg/L)与TF相比明显降低,SO_4~(2–)浓度则高达10398.98±626.70 mg/L;东沙采场废水库(DS)则为中性(pH7.55),但SO_4~(2–)仍高达4162.99mg/L,主要的金属离子为Mg(594.90 mg/L)、Ca (650.10 mg/L)。3个废水库的原核生物多样性随pH的升高而升高。两个酸性废水库的原核生物组成较为接近,但TF的化能自养菌含量较高(69.54%±2.89%),PT的化能异养菌含量较高(64.45%±13.81%)。自养铁氧化菌Ferrovum在TF中的比例高达(64.17±1.84)%,在PT中则下降为(35.39±13.74)%。但PT中含有丰富的化能异养嗜酸菌如Acidicapsa(15.75%±3.99%)、Acidiphilium(10.65%±2.05%)、Acidisphaera (6.34%±1.02%)等。DS中虽然也含有较高的金属离子和SO_4~(2–),但其中的原核生物组成与TF和PT截然不同,主要为Limnohabitans (18.47%)、Rhodobacter (8.42%)等。3个废水库的真核生物群落主要由藻类组成,酸水库TF和PT中主要为棕鞭藻属(Ochromonas)和胶球藻属(Coccomyxa),棕鞭藻属在TF中(53.65%±2.02%)占优势,胶球藻属在PT中(68.84±10.4%)占优势,中性废水库DS中则主要是小环藻属(Cyclotella)(49.85%)。经统计学分析,pH是影响矿山废水微生物多样性和群落组成的主要环境因素。  相似文献

Phylogenetic diversity among filamentous sulfur-oxidizing bacteria of the genus Thioploca inhabiting freshwater/brackish environments was analyzed in detail. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of Thioploca found in a freshwater lake in Japan, Lake Okotanpe, was identical to that of Thioploca from Lake Ogawara, a brackish lake. The samples of the two lakes could be differentiated by the sequences of their 23S rRNA genes and 16S–23S rRNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions. The 23S rRNA-based phylogenetic relationships between Thioploca samples from four lakes (Lake Okotanpe, Lake Ogawara, Lake Biwa, and Lake Constance) were similar to those based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences. In addition, multiple types of the ITS sequences were obtained from Thioploca inhabiting Lake Okotanpe and Lake Constance. Variations within respective Thioploca populations were also observed in the analysis of the soxB gene, involved in sulfur oxidation. As major members of the sheath-associated microbial community, bacteria of the phylum Chloroflexi were consistently detected in the samples from different lakes. Fluorescence in situ hybridization revealed that they were filamentous and abundantly distributed within the sheaths of Thioploca.  相似文献

The agarophyte red alga Gracilaria verrucosa occurs widely in Chilika Lake, one of the RAMSAR wetland sites in India. The lake is situated in the extreme southeast corner of Orissa between latitudes 19°28′ and 19°54′ N and longitudes 85°06′ and 85°35′ E. The natural biomass production is not sufficient for the agar industry, and the only alternative is to maximize the production of the seaweed through mass cultivation by seaweed farming. To elucidate important aspects of the growth and development of G. verrucosa, experimental field cultivation was undertaken at Langaleswar and Samal sites of Chilika Lake using ropes and raft methods during March to August, 2009. After 30 days of cultivation a maximum 15- and 13.8-fold increase in biomass in raft culture and rope culture, respectively, was observed at Langaleswar and an 11.6- and 11.0-fold increase in biomass at Samal. Environmental parameters such as temperature, salinity, pH, transparency, DO, conductivity, nitrate, and phosphate were monitored at both stations, and the influence of environmental parameters is discussed.  相似文献

A study of planktonic primary productivity and community structure was carried out on three lakes of varying morphometric and chemical features, but which were within a single watershed in Central Florida. Primary productivity in these lakes was evaluated by means of in situ light and dark bottle determinations as well as by calculations based upon chlorophyll and light data. Lake Mize, a deep sinkhole lake containing highly colored waters of low pH, proved to be a very unproductive lake, while Biven's Arm, a shallow-basin lake with alkaline waters and Newnan's lake, a shallow-basin like with highly colored waters both showed relatively high productivities. Phytoplankton components of the two productive lakes were quite similar to one another in being composed of bloom-forming blue-green and green algae, while the predominant forms in Lake Mize were chrysophytes, dinoflagellates and a diatom. Zooplanktonic forms were more uniform among the lakes than were the phytoplankton, though population levels reflected relative productivities among the lakes. Rotifers predominated in the Lake Mize plankton while cladocerans were relatively inabundant. This was opposite to the condition in Biven's Arm and Newnan's Lake. It is suggested that the constant presence of larval Chaoborus in the water column in Lake Mize may be partially responsible for the paucity of cladocera.  相似文献

1. We examined how ontogenetic development in a calanoid copepod from the High Arctic, Limnocalanus macrurus, influenced its elemental composition (carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus), methylmercury (MeHg) content and stable nitrogen and carbon isotope ratios in populations from nine lakes. 2. Population structure explained 33–83% of among‐lake variation in the C, N and P composition of the biomass. Biomass dominated by early‐stage copepodites had a greater P content, which declined in more mature populations, as indicated by significant changes in % P and the molar N/P ratio. Carbon and lipid contents increased with the proportion of adult biomass. Copepod populations sampled in warmer waters had a greater proportion of adult biomass, and water temperature was the most significant environmental variable explaining elemental composition. 3. A δ15N enrichment of 3.3 ± 1.0‰ was associated with copepodite development. Gut contents of L. macrurus showed no evidence of animal (invertebrate) prey, indicating no change in trophic position. 4. Unexpectedly, MeHg concentration was negatively correlated with the proportion of adult biomass. However, this trend was not significant after correcting MeHg concentration to non‐lipid dry mass, suggesting a lipid dilution effect in more mature copepods. Lake surface area, rather than ontogeny, best explained MeHg concentrations in L. macrurus. 5. Ontogenetic influences on chemical constituents of this common Arctic copepod, particularly δ15N ratios and uncorrected MeHg concentrations, highlight the relevance of developmental processes for studies of food webs and mercury in species‐poor High Arctic lakes.  相似文献

Microorganisms in a high altitude Glacier Ice in Tibet   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Eighty-one strains of viable microorganisms were recovered from 23 samples collected from Ice Core 3 of Malan Glacier (China, 91° 45.3′ E, 35° 48.4′ N) drilled at high altitude (5620 m). All the strains were prokaryotes—75 of bacteria (including spore-forming ones) and 6 of actinomycetes. The characteristic genera differ from those of Arctic and Antarctic ice, in which many fungi and algae are widely distributed; this shows an difference of environmental conditions between Tibet and polar regions. The variation in number and species ofBacillus in different ice core layers implied changes of environmental conditions in the past.  相似文献
