Quantitative and qualitative data are given for the two African species of Gnetum ( Gnetum section Gnetum subsection Micrognemones ). These species are lianoid and lack the fibre-tracheids of G. gnemon but have about the same vessel element and tracheid length as in that species. Vessel diameter is related to stem age and organography. Tori are clearly present in tracheary elements of the African Gnetum species, a first report for the genus. In these two species, origin of the lateral meristem, which produces vascular tissue and cambia, can be traced directly and indirecdy to cortical parenchyma. A second kind of meristematic action, newly reported for Gnetum, is produced by proliferation of axial parenchyma, fragmenting secondary xylem. Both presence of tori and site of origin of lateral meristematic activity in Gnetum contrast with corresponding conditions in Welwitschia.  相似文献

Quantitative and qualitative data are presented for seven collections representing two varieties (unlike in habit) of Gnetum gnemon. Tracheids are present, but abundant and intermixed with them are septate fibre-tracheids rich in starch. Axial parenchyma has been reported only once previously for the species. Axial parenchyma is in strands of 4–10 cells, is rich in starch, is primarily vasicentric (paratracheal) in distribution, less commonly diffuse. About equally common are simple and compound perforation plates; the latter are composed of from two to about ten bordered foraminate perforations, the shape of which may be altered by crowding or coalescence, but is clearly still foraminate. Lateral walls of vessels bear pits that are vestured around pit cavities, not facing the pit membrane. Rays are composed mostly of procumbent cells; the tangential walls bear bordered pits. Crystals, present in ray cells and (rarely) axial parenchyma vary widely in size. Crystalliferous sclereids with layered walls, starch-rich parenchyma, and gelatinous secondary phloem fibres are the main components of bark. Early stages in origin of successive vascular cambia in bark are newly described. When representative conditions are derived from study of large numbers of slides, the classical view that Gnetum vessels are unlike those of angiosperms is supported. Features of Gnetum gnemon wood are discussed in the light of ecology and conductive physiology.  相似文献

Maximum vessel diameters were examined in the secondary xylem of stems of Gnetum of various sizes. One tree (G. gnemon) and 13 liana species were compared. In three species, vessel length distributions were determined by the latex paint method, and showed many short and fewer long vessels. Latex and compressed air methods, used to find the maximum vessel lengths, showed that maximum vessel lengths were similar for three species of Gnetum. In old stems, mean and maximum vessel diameters tended to be greater in lianas than in the tree species. The skewed distribution of vessel lengths and the trend of wider vessels in lianas as compared to trees were similar to those distributions and trends described previously for angiosperms. In random samples of macerated wood of three species, simple perforation plates were most common in vessel members of all species. Foraminate and modified foraminate perforations were less frequent. Average diameter of vessel members with either foraminate or modified foraminate perforations was less than for those with simple perforations. The resemblance of Gnetum vessels to those of angiosperm trees and vines is most likely a case of convergent evolution (homoplasy) in xylem characteristics.  相似文献

The wood anatomy of 16 of the 37 genera within the epacrids (Styphelioideae, Ericaceae s.l.) is investigated by light and scanning electron microscopy. Several features in the secondary xylem occur consistently at the tribal level: arrangement of vessel-ray pits, distribution of axial parenchyma, ray width, and the presence and location of crystals. The primitive nature of Prionoteae and Archerieae is supported by the presence of scalariform perforation plates with many bars and scalariform to opposite vessel pitting. The wood structure of Oligarrheneae is similar to that of Styphelieae, but the very narrow vessel elements, exclusively uniseriate rays and the lack of prismatic crystals in Oligarrheneae distinguish these two tribes. The secondary xylem of Monotoca tamariscina indicates that it does not fit in Styphelieae; a position within Oligarrheneae is possible. Like most Cosmelieae, all Richeeae are characterized by exclusively scalariform perforation plates with many bars, a very high vessel density and paratracheal parenchyma, although they clearly differ in ray width (exclusively uniseriate rays in Cosmelieae vs. uniseriate and wide multiseriate rays in Richeeae). Several wood anatomical features confirm the inclusion of epacrids in Ericaceae s.l. Furthermore, there are significant ecological implications. The small vessel diameter and high vessel frequency in many epacrids are indicative of a high conductive safety to avoid embolism caused by freeze-thaw cycles, while the replacement of scalariform by simple vessel perforation plates and an increase in vessel diameter would suggest an increased conductive efficiency, which is especially found in mesic temperate or tropical Styphelieae.  相似文献

Two fossil tree species, both with unusual characteristics, occur in the Upper Triassic of the Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona, USA and adjacent areas. The first, Schilderia adamanica , has a highly idiosyncratic secondary xylem structure which contains normal uniseriate and broad complex multiseriate 'herring-bone' rays. The trunk cross-section of the secondary xylem may be either of a normal pycnoxylic type with a central pith and rays radiating from that or it may consist of appressed 'xylem masses' with rays curving towards one another at their extremities. The second, Woodworthia arizonica , has narrow, horizontal vascular traces traversing the entire radial width of the secondary xylem. By analogy with extant tree species, these traces would have terminated on preventitious buds deeply embedded in the bark which, in the case of these fossil trunks, have failed to be silicified. Such buds have the capacity to develop into epicormic shoots when the crown foliage of the tree is damaged. A further specimen of W. arizonica is recorded for the first time from the Permian of southern Brazil. Reconstruction drawings of both trees are produced.  相似文献

Kleinodendron, a new genus of Euphorbiaceae, was assigned by Smith and Downs to the tribe Cluytieae. A xylem anatomical survey indicates that there are no objections to this placement. Woods of Cluytieae are diverse but may be characterized generally by having pores which average less than 80 μ in diameter and which are well divided between solitary and radial multiple distributions in the same species; simple vessel perforations; alternate intervascular pitting; fiber-tracheids and libriform wood fibers; exclusively uniseriate, or uniseriate and biseriate heterocellular vascular rays in the same species; uniseriate “bridges” linking superposed biseriate ray segments; diffuse, diffuse-in-aggregates, and scanty vasicentric axial parenchyma, sometimes in the same species; and crystal rhomboids. That Microdesmis and Pogonophora diverge sharply from these generalizations in having scalariform vessel perforations and broad vascular rays, is an indication that they may not be closely related to other genera in Cluytieae.  相似文献

LEV-YADUN, S. & ALONI, R., 1993. Variant secondary growth in old stems of Ephedra campylopoda C. A. Mey. Ephedra campylopoda C. A. Mey is a woody climber of the Ephedraceae. The vascular rays of old, thick stems of E. campylopoda differ greatly from the known ray structure found in young stems of the same species, and from the common ray structure of other woody species. The large rays in thick stems include xylem in various orientations, and they intermingle with the axial system. We suggest that this is a variant secondary growth, a common characteristic of climbers.  相似文献

Several fossil woods from Early Cretaceous sediments in Yumen City in northwestern North China Block, China, have been described. They belong to two fossil wood taxa, Piceoxylon yumeniense Zhou, Peng, Deng, Zhang and Yang n. sp. and Protophyllocladoxylon chijinense Zhou, Peng, Deng, Zhang and Yang n. sp. The well-preserved specimens yield secondary xylem with distinct growth rings. Piceoxylon yumeniense exhibits cross-field with taxodioid pits as well as two distinct xylem ray types. The bi- to triseriate rays are characterised by one or two horizontal resin canals with unequal uniseriate ends. Protophyllocladoxylon chijinense Zhou, Peng, Deng, Zhang and Yang n. sp. shows window-like cross-field pits, which are occasionally cupressoid and have uniseriate xylem rays. These fossil wood records improve our understanding of the fossil diversity, floral composition and palaeoclimate of the Xiagou Formation. Palaeoclimatic analysis of the palaeoxylogical assemblage indicates that the northwestern Gansu region predominantly exhibited a warm and wet climate condition, while a brief cooling event may have occurred in the region during the Early Cretaceous.  相似文献

Bostonia perplexa, gen. et sp. nov., was collected from the Lower Mississippian Falling Run member of the Sanderson Formation. The single short segment of an axis, preserved as a petrifaction, contains at least three vascular columns, each with both primary and secondary tissues. Primary xylem is two or three ribbed, and contains several mesarch protoxylem strands. Gymnospermous secondary xylem is characterized by both uniseriate and multiseriate rays. The ground tissue is parenchymatous except for a few clusters of sclerotic cells. In its apparent polystelic nature, the specimen superficially resembles members of the Pennsylvanian to Permian Medullosaceae. All evidence currently available, however, leads to the conclusion that this species should be placed in the Upper Devonian to Lower Mississippian Calamopityaceae. It has not been determined with certainty whether the species is polystelic (in the sense of the Medullosaceae), or whether the apparent polystely is the result of stelar branching proximal to the level of branch divergence.  相似文献

A comparative anatomical study on the secondary phloem of 5-genera, 10 species in Celastraceae was carried out. Based on the phloem structure characters, 3 phloem types were observed. In type Ⅰ , as seen in 5 species of Euonymus, the sieve-tube elements have more inclined end walls and numerous sieve areas (compound sieve plates), phloem rays are almost uniseriate. Type Ⅱ is seen in Celastrus and Tripterygium. It has relatively short sievetube elements, slight inclined end wall and sparse number of sieve areas: the phloem fiber is not lignified and ray is multiseriate. Type Ⅲ is observed in Dipentodon and Perrottetia, the sieve-tube elements are with simple sieve plate, the end wall is almost transverse, there are sclereid and fiber groups in the nonfounctional phloem, and phloem rays are uniseriate or biseriate.  相似文献

Cohen , Lila M., and Theodore Delevoryas . (Yale U., New Haven, Conn.) An occurrence of Cordaites in the upper Pennsylvanian of Illinois. Amer. Jour. Bot. 46(7): 545–549. Illus. 1959.—Cordaites validus a new cordaitean species from Calhoun, Illinois, is described. It is characterized by one or more vertical series of large, barrel-shaped parenchyma cells in association with the primary xylem, a short transition zone of primary xylem elements, extremely shallow uniseriate rays and generally uniseriate pitting. This species represents the first North American Cordaites shown to be endarch throughout.

Wood samples of stems, lignotubers, and roots of the majority of species of Penaeaceae were analyzed with respect to qualitative and quantitative features. Virtually no data have hitherto been presented on xylem features of this family, restricted to Cape Province, South Africa. Presence of vestured pits in vessels, septate crystalliferous parenchyma in wood, intraxylary phloem, predominantly erect ray cells in the typically narrow, multiseriate rays and in the uniseriate rays, and amorphous deposits in ray cells place Penaeaceae securely in Myrtales and help to define that order. By comparison of ecological preferences of the species, as observed during field work, with quantitative analysis of conductive tissue, close correspondence of the wood structure to habit and habitat is demonstrated.  相似文献

The structures of secondary xylem of 6 species of Caragana, which grow in desert regions of Northwest of China, are described in details. The main quantitative characters are compared with species. And a key to the identification of wood structures of 6 species is given. The main similarities of secondary xylem of these 6 species are as follows: vessels per mm2 very numerous, percentage of multiple vessels high; vessel elements very short, perforations simple and in almost horizontal end walls; intervessel bordered pits alternate and vestured, and vessels with spiral thickenings. Libriform fibres are very short, and usually with thick end walls, and with simple pits. Rays are heigh to very low, and with multiseriate and uniseriate, and with heterogeneous type Ⅰ and Ⅱ. In addition, there are differences in other characters, e.g. vessel distribution, amount of axial parenchyma and distribution, ray frequency, crystals present or absent, and crystal distribution, if present. These differences can be used as the anatomical characters to identify the wood structures of the 6 species. In this article we also discuss the relation between the structure of xylem elements and the environmental influences.  相似文献

The developmental anatomy of the vascular cambium and periderm ofBotrypus virginianus was studied, and its bearing on the systematic position of Ophioglossacease is discussed. The cambial zone including cambium is initiated in a procambial ring of the stem before primary vascular tissue is well differentiated. The presumed cambium is composed of fusiform and ray initials. The cambium is extremely unequally bifacial, producing secondary xylem centripetally, and quite a small number of parenchymatous cells but no secondary phloem centrifugally. The cambial activity persists long, although it is very low in the mature part of the stem. It seems that the circumferential increase of the cambium is accommodated by an increase in the number of cambial initials. Secondary xylem is nonstoried and composed of tracheids with circular-bordered pits with evenly thick pit membranes, and uniseriate or partly biseriate radial rays. It makes up the bulk of the stem xylem. Periderm is formed almost entirely around the stem, simultaneous with its increment due to the secondary xylem. The combination of these anatomical features of secondary tissue supports the idea that Ophioglossaceae are living progymnosperms.  相似文献

We describe the wood structure of Aegiceras corniculatum and its differences under various soil salinities. This species had diffuse-porous wood with poorly defined growth rings. Vessels which had single perforations occurred abundantly and in multiples and were storeyed. Intervascular pits between contiguous vessels were alternate bordered ones while half-bordered pit-pairs existed between both vessel-ray and vessel-parenchyma. Homogenous xylem rays were multiseriate and uniseriate. Fiber-tracheids with bordered pits often had thinner walls. Xylem parenchyma cells were scant and distributed diffusely and paratracheally. Differences in the structural and quantitative characters of vessels, xylem rays and fiber-tracheids under diverse soil salinities are described. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Gnetum (Gnetales) species are suggested to be unique extant gymnosperms that have acquired high photosynthetic and transpiration capacities as well as greater xylem hydraulic capacity and efficiency compared with all other extant gymnosperms. This is because Gnetum is the only extant gymnosperm lineage that combines vessels, broad pinnate-veined leaves and an ecological distribution in wet, productive lowland tropical rainforest habitats. Yet, field-based observations on the group's ecophysiological performance are lacking. To test a hypothesis that Gnetum species are ecophysiologically analogous to light-demanding woody tropical angiosperms, stem xylem hydraulic performance, photosynthesis and stomatal conductance were investigated in Gnetum as compared with a diverse group of co-occurring woody plants in a lowland tropical rainforest. It was found that Gnetum species combined low photosynthetic capacity and low stomatal conductances with a low stem water transport ability. The physiological observations are consistent with the general occurrence of Gnetum species in shady, primary forest habitats. These results on Gnetum ecophysiology indicate that the coupling of vessels, broad pinnate-veined leaves and the liana habit do not signal the evolution of a highly opportunistic, light-demanding life history in gymnosperms.  相似文献
