The influence of Tomicus piniperda (L.)(Col.:Scolytidae) attacks on Acanthocinus aedilis (L.)(Col.:Cerambycidae) (1) oviposition behavior, (2) breeding material preference and (3) reproductive success was investigated in caged pine bolts with and without egg galleries of T. piniperda. In addition, A. aedilis oviposition behavior was studied in the field. In the presence of T. piniperda attacks most A. aedilis eggs were laid through the entrance holes of the bark beetle egg galleries. In the absence of bark beetle attacks most A. aedilis eggs were laid at places where the outer bark had been damaged and the phloem was exposed. In cages, A. aedilis preferred to oviposit in bolts with bark beetle attacks. Thus, A. aedilis oviposited in all 17 of bark beetle attacked bolts but in only four of nine bolts without T. piniperda attacks. Neither the number of A. aedilis offspring nor the body size of emerging adults differed significantly between bolts attacked by bark beetles and unattacked bolts. Nor was there any significant relationship between the density of bark beetle egg galleries and the production of A. aedilis offspring.

Whether and how mutualisms are maintained through ecological and evolutionary time is a seldom studied aspect of bark beetle–fungal symbioses. All bark beetles are associated with fungi and some species have evolved structures for transporting their symbiotic partners. However, the fungal assemblages and specificity in these symbioses are not well known. To determine the distribution of fungi associated with the mycangia of the western pine beetle (Dendroctonus brevicomis), we collected beetles from across the insect’s geographic range including multiple genetically distinct populations. Two fungi, Entomocorticium sp. B and Ceratocystiopsis brevicomi, were isolated from the mycangia of beetles from all locations. Repeated sampling at two sites in Montana found that Entomocorticium sp. B was the most prevalent fungus throughout the beetle’s flight season, and that females carrying that fungus were on average larger than females carrying C. brevicomi. We present evidence that throughout the flight season, over broad geographic distances, and among genetically distinct populations of beetle, the western pine beetle is associated with the same two species of fungi. In addition, we provide evidence that one fungal species is associated with larger adult beetles and therefore might provide greater benefit during beetle development. The importance and maintenance of this bark beetle–fungus interaction is discussed.

The bark beetle Scolytogenes birosimensis Niijima is suspected to be involved in the decline of Pittosporum tobira (Thunb. ex Murray) Aiton in the coastal areas of Japan. We isolated fungi from adult S. birosimensis in nine different localities in Japan to assess their potential association and predict their contribution to the success of the beetle. Results from morphological identification of associated fungi showed that the beetle was associated with Fusarium solani and Candida spp. Furthermore, molecular analysis showed that F. solani was most closely related to the plant pathogenic fungus F. solani f. sp. mori. Fungal isolation from surface-sterilized, dissected beetles and scanning electron miscroscope (SEM) observation of the body surface suggested that the associated fungi were carried in the pits on the beetles' elytra. These findings contribute to the understanding of the relationships between S. birosimensis and its associated fungi.

Scots pine trees belonging to clones considered to be resistant or susceptible after mass inoculations of Leptographium wingfieldii , a fungus associated with Tomericus piniperda , were submitted to a low density of fungal inoculations or beetle insertions. The length of the phloem-induced reaction zone, the fungal extension and fungal density inside the reaction zone, and the length of maternal galleries of T. piniperda were measured. The length of the phloem reaction zone never differed between resistant and susceptible trees. The density of the fungus mycelium in histological sections of the phloem, and the length of the maternal galleries in the reaction zone were higher in the susceptible trees than in the resistant ones. These factors could be good indicators of resistance of Scots pine to mass attacks.

Abstract:  The association between Tomicus piniperda L. (Col., Scolytinae) and fungi was studied in a Pinus sylvestris L. forest in Mielec-Mościska. Fungi were isolated from overwintered adult beetles taken from two stands situated in different distance from timber yard. Two media were used for isolation. The results showed great diversity of fungi associated with T. piniperda : 1895 cultures, representing 64 species, were isolated. Penicillia and Hormonema dematioides were the dominant species, found in 20.2% and 17.8% of all beetles, respectively. A frequently isolated ophiostomatoid fungi was Ophiostoma minus . Qualitative and quantitative differences in the mycobiota composition of this insect between two stands were detected. The highest richness and diversity of fungal species appeared in the samples taken from the location where the trees were heavily damaged by shoot-feeding of T. piniperda . Differences were most clear for the pathogenic O. minus , which was a common fungal associate of the insects in this stand.

1. Data from a 4-year mark–recapture study of the fungivorous tenebrionid beetle Bolitophagus reticulatus at a locality in central Sweden and a trapping study of the species elsewhere in the same region are used to describe the survival and habitat preferences of the species.
2. The adult beetle was found to survive for up to three winters. A minimum estimate of the yearly survival rate was 0.20.
3. The beetle was found to occur preferentially on tree trunks that were either standing or lying but only touching the ground along a minor part of their length; that were relatively thick; and that carried many Fomes fomentarius sporocarps. In contrast to previous information for this species, the beetle was found to use living sporocarps to a large extent, and not only dead ones.
4. An experiment with beetles given a choice between living and dead fungus tissue indicated that pairs of one male and one female beetle preferred living fungus while single beetles preferred dead fungus.

The presence and diversity of beetle pathogens associated with different tree species in Bulgaria was investigated. In total, 818 specimens belonging to 22 beetle species were examined. Pathogens occurred in 9 host species. The infections were found in the gut (virus, nematodes, protozoans, microsporidia) and haemolymph (nematodes) of the infected insects. The following pathogen species: ItEPV, Beauveria bassiana, B. brongniartii, Isaria farinosa, Gregarina typographi, Gregarina spp., Chytridiopsis typographi, Chytridiopsis sp., and nematodes were revealed. Insects with mycoses were mummified and filled up with fungal structures, formed pseudosclerotium. Most pathogens were established in bark beetles (Scolytinae). For the first time, the fungus B. bassiana was reported in Tomicus piniperda, Orthotomicus longicollis, O. erosus, X. spinole, Taphrorychus villifrons and Phylobius sp. in Bulgaria. We also present the first records of gregarines in O. longicollis, Acanthocinus aedilis, Rhagium inquisitor, Pyrochroa coccinea, and of the microsporidium Chytridiopsis sp. in O. longicollis.

The induced defence reaction of Scots pine Pinus sylvestris to stem attacks by the common pine shoot beetle, Tomicus piniperda (Col, Scolytidae), was studied by inducing natural attacks on young Scots pine trees of different vigour Pruned trees were more heavily attacked by T piniperda than unpruned ones Vigorous trees successfully contained the attacking beetles within resinous lesions, whereas less vigorous trees failed to defend themselves The content of resin acids increased dramatically in the lesions on all trees, and the resin acid composition differed somewhat between some treatments Starch accumulation in the inner bark of the main stem was lower in pruned trees than in unpruned ones, and starch reserves were depleted in the most heavily attacked trees All but one of the unpruned trees survived the attack, whereas most of the severely pruned ones died following attack by beetles at densities exceeding c 300 egg galleries m−2  相似文献
