To study mechanism underpinning the calcifuge habit of some Lupinus species, especially under low‐phosphorus (P) conditions, Lupinus species that were likely to respond differently to calcium (Ca) availability were assembled, and the sensitivity to Ca under a low‐P supply was assessed. Seven Lupinus species (9 genotypes, L. albus L. cv Kiev, L. albus L. P26766, L. angustifolius L. cv Mandelup, L. angustifolius L. P26723, L. luteus L. cv Pootalong, L. hispanicus ssp. bicolor Boiss. and Reut. P22999, L. pilosus Murr. P27440, L. cosentinii Guss. P27225, and L. atlanticus Gladst. P27219) were grown hydroponically at 10 or 6000 μM Ca. Leaf symptoms, gas exchange and biomass were recorded; leaf and root nutrient concentrations were analysed, and the leaf cell types in which Ca and P accumulated were determined using elemental X‐ray microanalyses. Calcium toxicity was demonstrated for L. angustifolius P26723, L. hispanicus ssp. bicolor. P22999, and L. cosentinii P27225, whereas the other species were tolerant of a high Ca supply under low‐P conditions. In addition, genotypic differences in Ca toxicity were found within L. angustifolius. Most Ca accumulated in the mesophyll cells in all species, whereas most P was located in epidermal cells.  相似文献

Commercial narrow-leafed lupins (Lupinus angustifolius L.) grown on calcareous soils commonly display chlorotic symptoms resembling Fe deficiency. The severity of chlorosis increases with concurrent increases in soil moisture content. Our research has indicated that the rough-seeded lupin species, Lupinus pilosus Murr., has a range of adaptation to calcareous soils, from tolerant to intolerant. A pot experiment was conducted comparing a tolerant, a moderately tolerant and a moderately intolerant genotype of L. pilosus. Plants were grown for 35 days in a calcareous soil (50% CaCO3) at three moisture contents (80%, 100% and 120% of field capacity); the growth was compared with that on a fertile black cracking clay control soil at 70% of field capacity. Visual chlorosis score, chlorophyll meter readings, number of leaves and shoot dry weights were recorded at 14, 21, 28 and 35 days after sowing. Concentrations of chlorophyll, active Fe and nutrients in the youngest fully expanded leaves were also measured. Results showed that increased soil moisture increased the severity of chlorotic symptoms (increased chlorosis score) in all genotypes. The tolerant genotype showed significantly less symptoms than other genotypes at all moisture contents. All genotypes were able to recover from chlorosis symptoms at 80% moisture in the calcareous soil. Chlorosis score negatively correlated with chlorophyll meter readings, chlorophyll concentration and foliar active and total Fe, and Mn concentrations. Visual chlorosis score appeared to be a cost effective, accurate and efficient method enabling classification of the tolerance of genotypes. The chlorotic symptoms were likely to be due to HCO3 - induced nutrient deficiencies or a direct effect of HCO3 - on chlorophyll synthesis. This study indicates that the most probable mechanism of tolerance is related to an ability to prevent uptake of HCO3 - or efficiently sequester it once inside the root which prevents increases in internal pH and transport to the shoots.  相似文献

Soil- and solution-based screening methods were used to identify interspecific and intraspecific variation in lupins for tolerance to calcareous soils. Plants were grown for 21 days in a calcareous soil (pH 8.2; 50% CaCO3; moisture content 90% of field capacity) for soil-based screening and in nutrient solution containing 15 mM KHCO3 for solution-based screening. Chlorosis as an indicator of tolerance was recorded. Lupinus pilosus Murr. had the most tolerant genotypes and had the greatest range of intraspecific variation. Most genotypes of Lupinus atlanticus Glads. and Lupinus angustifolius L. were moderately intolerant, although two genotypes of L. atlanticus appeared to be tolerant. Lupinus albus L. had moderately tolerant to moderately intolerant genotypes, whilst the single genotypes of Lupinus cosentinii Guss. and Lupinus digitatus Forsk. appeared tolerant. In a field study six genotypes of L. pilosus identified in the soil-based screening as differing in their tolerance to the calcareous soil were grown on comparable calcareous (pH 8.3; topsoil 3% CaCO3, subsoil 13% CaCO3) and non-calcareous (pH 7.3) soils within a paddock. Chlorosis and nutrient concentrations in the youngest leaves were measured 53 days after sowing, whilst grain yield was estimated at harvest. Despite the soil containing a much lower CaCO3 content than used in the screening method, the field study confirmed that moderately intolerant to intolerant genotypes had lower relative grain yields than more tolerant genotypes. Chlorosis rankings of the genotypes were correlated between field and the screening studies. It is suggested that the incorporation of genes conferring tolerance to calcareous soils into high yielding, agronomically suitable genotypes of L. pilosus should be an important objective in a lupin breeding program for calcareous soils.  相似文献

Coastal eutrophication is a growing problem worldwide, leading to increased epiphyte overgrowth of seagrass leaves. Yet little is known about how epiphytes affect key biogeochemical conditions and processes in the seagrass phyllosphere. We used electrochemical microsensors to measure microgradients of O2, pH, and CO2 at the bare and epiphyte-covered leaf surface of seagrass (Zostera marina L.) to determine effects of epiphytes on the leaf chemical microenvironment. Epiphytes result in extreme daily fluctuations in pH, O2, and inorganic carbon concentrations at the seagrass leaf surface severely hampering the plant's performance. In light, leaf epiphyte biofilms and their diffusive boundary layer lead to strong basification, markedly reducing the CO2 and HCO3- availability at the leaf surface, leading to reduced photosynthetic efficiency as a result of carbon limitation and enhanced photorespiration. With epiphytes, leaf surface pH increased to >10, thereby exceeding final pH levels (~9.62) and CO2 compensation points for active photosynthesis. In darkness, epiphyte biofilms resulted in increased CO2 and hypoxia at the leaf surface. Epiphytes can lead to severe carbon limitation in seagrasses owing to strong phyllosphere basification leading to CO2 depletion and costly, yet limiting, HCO3- utilization, increasing the risk of plant starvation.  相似文献

The effect of iron supply on the growth and nodulation ofLupinus angustifolius L. (Gungurru),Lupinus luteus L. (R-1171) andLupinus pilosus Murr. (P20957) was studied in acid solutions. Plants of the three species were grown together in the same solution and inoculated withBradyrhizobium (Lupinus) WU 425. Plants were then grown with or without applied NH4NO3. The lupin species differed greatly in their sensitivity to low iron concentrations in solution withL. pilosus being most tolerant andL. luteus most sensitive.L. pilosus had the highest iron concentration in tissues and had a higher ratio of iron concentration in the youngest fully expanded leaf blades (YEB) to that in roots than the other two species.L. luteus had higher iron concentrations in roots but lower iron concentration in YEB and shoots than didL. angustifolius. The requirements of internal iron for the maximal chlorophyll synthesis in YEB were 65 μg g-1 forL. angustifolius andL. luteus, and 52 μg g-1 forL. pilosus. In contrast to effects on growth, the three species had similar external iron requirements for nodule formation in roots and for maximal nitrogen concentrations in shoots. The results indicate that iron tolerant lupin species require lower internal and external iron supply and have a greater ability than sensitive species to translocate iron from roots to shoots.  相似文献

Several Lupinus species, for example, Lupinus albus, Lupinus luteus, Lupinus angustifolius, and Lupinus hispanicus were used to accumulate Mn(II), Cd(II), Pb(II), Cr(III), Cr(VI), Hg2+, and CH3Hg+ from waste waters. The influence of different species concentrations (50 and 100 mg L-1) and pH on growing behavior as well as the resulting distribution of metals in the plants were investigated. The results obtained showed that lupins were able to germinate and to grow in the presence of the metals mentioned above, even when they were present at levels as high as 50 mg L-1. Accumulation of Pb(II), Cr(III), and Cd(II) was higher in roots than in shoots. As far as mercury is concerned, the highest CH3Hg and Hg2+ accumulation was detected in roots, but fast transport toward the leaves was noticed. In contrast to mercury, the uptake of chromium seems to be influenced by the chemical form of the analyte, remaining Cr(VI) in solution. No differences in growing behavior and accumulation were observed for the four Lupinus species studied. Even though plants were exposed only a relatively short time to the metal solutions, metal concentrations of approximately 2 g/kg of dry matter were detected in the young lupins plants. The feasibility of utilizing Lupinus plants for the removal of heavy metals from wastewater was also investigated. Lupins were able to grow under extreme conditions (wastewater, pH lower than 2) and to remove 98% of the initial amount of toxic metals present in the sample.  相似文献

A field experiment involving two planting densities (83,333 and 166,666 plants per ha), two cropping systems (monoculture and mixed culture) and five cowpea [Vigna unguiculata L. (Walp.)] genotypes was conducted at Nietvoorbij (33°54S, 18°14E), Stellenbosch, South Africa, to select cowpea material with superior growth and water-use efficiency (WUE). The results showed significantly higher photosynthetic rates, stomatal conductance and transpiration in leaves of plants at low density and in monoculture due to greater chlorophyll (Chl) levels relative to those at high density and in mixed culture. As a result, C concentration in leaves and the amount of C, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, and B accumulated in shoots at low density and under monoculture were also much higher. Even though no marked differences in photosynthetic rates were found between and among the five cowpea genotypes, leaf C concentration and shoot C, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, and B contents differed considerably, with Sanzie exhibiting the highest C concentration and C, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, and B contents in shoots, followed by Bensogla and Omondaw, while ITH98-46 and TVu1509 had the lowest shoot concentration and contents of C, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, and B. WUE (calculated as photosynthate produced per unit water molecule transpired) was significantly greater in plants at low density and monoculture relative to those at high density and in mixed culture. Isotopic analysis revealed significant differences in δ13C values of sorghum [Sorghum bicolor L. (Moench.)] and cowpea, with higher δ13C values being obtained for plants at low density and in monoculture relative to those at high density or in mixed culture. The five cowpea genotypes also showed significant differences in δ13C values, with Sanzie exhibiting the most negative value (i.e. low WUE) and ITH98-46, the least negative δ13C value (i.e. high WUE). Whether measured isotopically or from gas-exchange studies, sorghum (a C4 species) exhibited much higher WUE relative to cowpea (a C3 species). Both correlation and regression analyses revealed a positive relationship between WUE from gas-exchange studies and δ13C values from isotopic analysis of cowpea and sorghum shoots.  相似文献

Spread of necrotic and non‐necrotic strains of Bean yellow mosaic virus (BYMV) was compared when aphid vectors moved both types from external or internal virus sources to plots of Lupinus spp. (lupin). Regardless of whether virus sources were internal or external, removed or left in place, and spread was within plots with homologous sources or across buffers to plots containing the opposite type of virus source, non‐necrotic BYMV always spread faster than necrotic BYMV in plots of L. angustifolius (narrow‐leafed lupin). When necrotic BYMV spread from external sources into plots sown with two L. angustifolius genotypes differing in their necrosis responses to different BYMV strain groups and one genotype of L. luteus (yellow lupin) giving only non‐necrotic responses, differing symptom reactions in the two L. angustifolius genotypes revealed presence of two distinct necrotic BYMV strain groups and overall virus spread was greater in this species than in L. luteus. Spread of non‐necrotic BYMV in L. angustifolius was always polycyclic in nature. However, when it came initially from external sources, spread of necrotic BYMV was largely monocyclic. This work demonstrates how temporal virus spread can be diminished when hypersensitive (necrotic) resistance is deployed and the limitations associated with employing hypersensitivity that is strain specific.  相似文献

Defining plant adaptation to soil conditions is critical for the successful introduction of grain legume species into farming systems. This nutrient solution study examined the effects of pH (4, 5, 6, 7 and 8) and bicarbonate (5 mM KHCO3) on the growth and nodulation of 14 grain legume species supplied with N or reliant on N2-fixation. Species includedPisum sativum L.,Cicer arietinum L.,Lens culinaris Med., and a range ofLupinus, Vicia andLathyrus species. Species differed greatly in response to solution pH. For both N-fertilized and N2-fixing plants, shoot growth ofL. culinaris was very sensitive to low pH (pH < 7), whereas shoot growth ofLupinus angustifolius L. andLupinus albus L. was sensitive to higher pH (pH ≥ 6). Other species had a broader optimal pH range for growth when supplied with N, but were generally sensitive to low pH (pH < 7 forC. arietinum andVicia sativa L., pH < 6 forP. sativum, Vicia faba L.,Lathyrus sativus L. andLathyrus cicera L., and pH < 5 forVicia benghalensis L. andVicia narbonensis L.) when reliant on N2-fixation. For these other species, symbiotic N2-fixation appeared to be more sensitive than host plant growth to low pH. This finding was supported by lower nodule numbers and mass, and lower N concentrations in shoots of sensitive species at low pH relative to higher pH. ForL. culinaris, nodule numbers and mass were relatively unaffected by pH 5–8, N concentrations in shoots were high at low pH and plants developed symptoms relating to H+ toxicity at pH as high as 7. These results indicate that host plant growth ofL. culinaris is more sensitive to low pH than theRhizobium symbiosis. ForL. albus andL. angustifolius, both host plant growth and symbiotic N2-fixation appeared to be equally sensitive to pH ≥ 6.Lupinus pilosus Murr. was more tolerant of high pH than the otherLupinus species. At pH 4, two genotypes ofC. arietinum had better early nodulation than other species.Vicia ervilia L. nodulated poorly at all levels of solution pH, indicating that the commercial Group E inoculum (Rhizobium leguminosurum bv.viceae SU303) may not be effective for this species in solution culture. Addition of bicarbonate decreased shoot growth, nodulation and N concentrations in shoots of most species. Early nodulation (nodule number) ofLathyrus ochrus (L.) DC was not affected by the bicarbonate treatment.  相似文献

Abscisic acid (ABA) is recognised as an important hormone involved in root-to-shoot communication of drought stress in plants. This study aimed to determine whether isolated roots can produce both free and conjugated ABA (ABA–glucose ester) and whether Lupinus species vary in the synthesis of ABA in the roots when dehydrated. The concentration of free and conjugated ABA at 100 and 50% root water content was measured in the distal 10 mm of the roots of 3- to 5-day-old seedlings of seven Lupinus species with and without 10−5 M tetcyclacis, an inhibitor of the oxidative breakdown of ABA. When the root tips were exposed to tetcyclacis, the concentration of free ABA increased by 20% on average, suggesting that oxidative breakdown of free ABA was limited in the isolated Lupinus roots. The concentration of free ABA of the fully hydrated plants varied significantly among genotypes and more than doubled on average across genotypes with dehydration of the root tips to 50% water content. The concentration of conjugated ABA also varied significantly with species, but was only one-tenth the concentration of free ABA in the roots and did not change significantly with root dehydration or the inhibition of oxidative metabolism. The production of free ABA in response to the water deficit varied with species from +470% in L. digitatus to +33% in L. angustifolius. The small concentration and lack of increase of conjugated ABA with water deficit suggests that it is unlikely to have an important role as a root signal in response to soil drying in Lupinus species.  相似文献

Summary Lupinus albus andK. angustifolius were grown in the field, harvested prior to leaf fall and the Ca, Mg, Na, K, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, P and Si content of the leaflets, petioles, stems, young shoots and inflorescences determined. Element levels inL. albus parts had changed little from those at an earlier harvest, except in the inflorescences in which most element levels had decreased. Both species accumulated manganese;L. angustifolius only in, the leaflets andL. albus in most parts. The leaflets of both were enriched with iron and this with manganese accumulation in a soil of neutral pH is considered to result from reducing conditions in the rhizosphere increasing their availability to the lupins. Silica, present at trace levels, is unlikely to be important for tolerance of lupins to manganese.  相似文献

Hydrilla verticillata (L.f.) Royle exhibits an inducible C4-type photosynthetic cycle, but lacks Kranz anatomy. Leaves in the C4-type state (but not C3-type) contained up to 5-fold higher internal dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) concentrations than the medium, indicating that they possessed a CO2-concentrating mechanism (CCM). Several lines of evidence indicated that the chloroplast was the likely site of CO2 generation. From C4-type leaf [DIC] measurements, the estimated chloroplastic free [CO2] was 400 mmol m?3. This gave a calculated 2% O2 inhibition of photosynthesis, which was identical to the measured value, and provided independent evidence that the estimated [CO2] was close to the true value. A homogeneous distribution of DIC in the C4-type leaf could not account for such a high [CO2], or the resultant low O2 inhibition. For C3-type leaves the estimated chloroplastic [CO2] was only 7 mmol m?3, which gave high, and similar, calculated and measured O2 inhibition values of 22 and 26%, respectively. The CCM did not appear to be located at the plasma membrane, as it operated at low and high pH, indicating that it was independent of use of HCO3? from the medium. Also, both C3? and C4-type Hydrilla leaves showed pH polarity in the light, with abaxial and adaxial boundary layer values of about pH 4·0 and 10·5, respectively. Thus, pH polarity was not a direct component of the CCM, though it probably improved access to HCO3. Additionally, iodoacetamide and methyl viologen greatly reduced abaxial acidification, but not the steady-state CCM. Inhibitor studies suggested that the CCM required photosynthetically generated ATP, but Calvin cycle activity was not essential. Both leaf types accumulated DIC in the dark by an ATP-requiring process, possibly respiration, and C4-type leaves fixed CO2 at 11·8% of the light rate. The operation of a CCM to minimize photorespiration, and the ability to recapture respiratory CO2 at night, would conserve DIC in a densely vegetated lake environment where daytime [CO2] is severely limiting, while [O2] and temperatures are high.  相似文献

High pH seems to be a major constraint limiting the production of narrow-leafed lupin (Lupinus angustifolius L.) on alkaline soils. Whereas there has been much interest in soil acidity, relatively little is known about the effect of high pH on the growth of roots of higher plants.Elongation of roots of L. angustifolius was particularly sensitive to pH6.0 compared with other species. The effect of high pH in decreasing root elongation in L. angustifolius occurred within one hour. It was via an effect on cell elongation and not cell division and the effect was readily reversible. The mechanisms of the adverse effect of high pH are unknown. The permeability ratio of K+ to Na+ in the plasma-membrane of the root cortical cells was similar in solutions of both low pH and high pH. Reduced cell growth at high pH was not associated with an inefficiency of proton extrusion to the bulk solution by roots of this species. Nevertheless, increasing buffer concentration in the external solution decreased root elongation more in L. angustifolius than in Lupinus pilosus and Pisum sativum.  相似文献

Legumes, with the ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen (N), may help alleviate the N limitations thought to constrain plant community response to elevated concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2). To address this issue we assessed: (1) the effects of the presence of the perennial grassland N2 fixer, Lupinus perennis, on biomass accumulation and plant N concentrations of nine-species plots of differing plant composition; (2) leaf-level physiology of co-occurring non-fixing species (Achillea millefolium, Agropyron repens, Koeleria cristata) in these assemblages with and without Lupinus; (3) the effects of elevated CO2 on Lupinus growth and symbiotic N2 fixation in both monoculture and the nine-species assemblages; and (4) whether assemblages containing Lupinus exhibit larger physiological and growth responses to elevated CO2 than those without. This study was part of a long-term grassland field experiment (BioCON) that controls atmospheric CO2 at current ambient and elevated (560 µmol mol–1) concentrations using free-air CO2 enrichment. Nine-species plots with Lupinus had 32% higher whole plot plant N concentrations and 26% higher total plant N pools than those without Lupinus, based on both above and belowground measurements. Co-occurring non-fixer leaf N concentrations increased 22% and mass-based net photosynthetic rates increased 41% in plots containing Lupinus compared to those without. With CO2 enrichment, Lupinus monocultures accumulated 32% more biomass and increased the proportion of N derived from fixation from 44% to 57%. In nine-species assemblages, Lupinus N derived from fixation increased similarly from 43% to 54%. Although Lupinus presence enhanced photosynthetic rates and leaf N concentrations of co-occurring non-fixers, and increased overall plant N pools, Lupinus presence did not facilitate stronger photosynthetic responses of non-fixing species or larger growth responses of overall plant communities to elevated CO2. Non-fixer leaf N concentrations declined similarly in response to elevated CO2 with and without Lupinus present and the relationship between net photosynthesis and leaf N was not affected by Lupinus presence. Regardless of the presence or absence of Lupinus, CO2 enrichment resulted in reduced leaf N concentrations and rates of net photosynthesis.  相似文献

The Ca, Mg, K, Na, P, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu and opaline-Si contentsof leaves, stems and inflorescences from each order of shootaxis was determined in Lupinus albus L. and Lupinus angustifoliusL. The distribution of Si was used as a base for passive transportin the transpiration stream. All of the elements investigatedwere redistributed among the leaves, stems and inflorescencesof either L. albus or L. angustifolius. Most of the elementsinvestigated were enriched in the inflorescences and depletedin either the leaves or the stems. Sodium was enriched in thestems whereas Ca and Mn were redistributed only in L. albus. The pattern of element redistribution was similar in each ofthe lateral shoot axes except for the youngest. For the elementsenriched in the inflorescences, more than half was suppliedby redistribution. Calcium redistribution was similar to thatfor K, which is regarded as phloem mobile, but a mechanism forCa redistribution is uncertain. A fluorimetric ratio technique was elaborated to measure apoplastic pH in the outer root cortex of maize (Zea mays L.) grown hydroponically. A newly synthesized fluorescent probe, fluorescein boronic acid (pKa = 5.48), which covalently binds to the cell wall of the outer cell layers, was used. Under conditions of saturating ion concentrations the apoplastic pH was determined along the root axis ranging from 1 to 30 mm behind the root tip. Apoplastic pH was recorded for root segment areas (1 mm2), and pH values of high statistical significance were obtained. With an external solution of pH 5, the apoplastic pH was about pH 5.1 in the division zone, between pH 4.8 and 4.9 in the elongation region and about pH 4.9 in the root hair zone. At an external pH of 8.6, the difference between the external pH and the apoplastic pH was considerably more, with a pH of 5.2–5.3 in all root zones. Addition of 1 mM NH4 + caused a small apoplastic pH decrease (0.05 of a pH unit) in all root zones. Apoplastic alkalization upon application of 6 mM NO3 was highest (0.3 of a pH unit) in the zone where root hairs emerge; in the division and early elongation zones, apoplastic pH increased only transiently. In the presence of 10 mM HCO3 , NO3 elicited a higher and persistent alkalization (0.06–0.25 of a pH unit) in all root zones. Application of fusicoccin reduced apoplastic pH from 4.85 to 4.75 in the elongation zone, while inhibition of the H+-ATPase with vanadate alkalized the apoplast in the root hair zone from pH 5.4 to 5.6. The observed pH differences along the root axis upon differential N supply and application of HCO3 provide evidence that this new pH technique is a useful tool with which to measure apoplastic pH, and in future may permit measurements at microsites at the cell level by use of microscope imaging. Freshly fertilized ova, eyed ova and yolk-sac fry of brown trout, Salmo trutta L., were exposed to each of four trace metals (aluminium: 6000 nmol l?1; copper: 80 nmol l?1; lead: 50 nmol l?1; zinc: 300 nmol l?1) while held in flowing artificial soft-water media maintained at pH 4.5 or 5.6 and [Ca] 20 or 200 μmol l?1. In continuous exposure from fertilization, survival of ova was severely affected at pH 4.5 and [Ca] 20 μmol l?1, regardless of the presence of Cu, Pb or Zn; Al reduced embryonic mortality and improved hatching success. High ambient [Ca] at pH 4.5 increased egg survival. At ‘swim-up’, surviving fry exposed to Al or Pb had lower whole body Ca, Na and K content, irrespective of pH or ambient [Ca]. Cu reduced whole body Ca and K content at pH 5.6 and [Ca] 200 μmol?1, and whole body Ca, Na and K content in the other media. Zn reduced whole body mineral content at pH 5.6 and [Ca] 20 μmol l?1. Whole body Mg content was reduced by all trace metals at pH 5.6 and [Ca] 20 μmol l?1, and by Cu at pH 5.6 and [Ca] 200 μmol l?1. Al and Cu impaired skeletal calcification at pH 5.6 at both ambient [Ca]; Pb only at [Ca] 20 μmol I?1. Zn enhanced calcification at pH 4.5 and [Ca] 200 μmol l?1. In the absence of trace metals, low pH reduced body Ca, Na, K content and skeletal calcification at [Ca] 200 μmol l?1. The uptake of Ca, Na and K, measured at regular intervals from hatching was impaired to the same extent by all treatments at pH 4.5, irrespective of ambient [Ca] or trace metal presence. At pH 5.6, irrespective of ambient [Ca], Al, Cu and Pb impaired Ca and K uptake. The rate of Na uptake was reduced by Al and Cu. Al-treated yolk-sac fry, exposed to low ambient [Ca] from 200–300° days post-hatch, suffered high mortalities regardless of pH. Ca, Na and K uptake was impaired by all treatments at pH 4.5, and by Al and Cu at pH 5.6 in a similar exposure period. The development of the early stages of brown trout in the presence of trace metals is discussed in relation to recruitment failure in areas of soft, acid water.  相似文献

In a leaf survey of 54 specimens of 11 Old World Lupinus species three classes of flavonoids were detected: flavones (in 82%), flavonols (in 36%) and flavone C-glycosides (in 55%). The rough-seeded species were clearly distinguished from the smooth-seeded taxa by the presence of a novel 2′-hydroxyflavone, luteolin and flavone C-glycosides as major leaf constituents and by the absence of flavonols. Within the smooth-seeded species, there are three flavonoid patterns: (a) flavonols only, L. albus; (b) flavones and flavonols, L. luteus, L. hispanicus and L. angustifolius; and (c) flavones only, L. micranthus. L. angustifolius further differed in uniquely producing diosmetin as a major leaf constituent. These divisions coincide exactly with previous groupings based on alkaloidal and morphological data. Amongst the 12 samples of L. angustifolius three chemical races were distinguished and a number of diosmetin glucoside malate esters detected. The flower flavonoid aglycone patterns of the nine Old World species surveyed differed markedly from the corresponding leaf profiles by the presence of flavones: luteolin and apigenin in eight and chrysoeriol in seven species as major constituents, while flavone C-glycosides were found only in trace amount in three species. In a leaf flavonoid survey of 13 representative New World Lupinus taxa, glycoflavones were major leaf components, a variety of methylated flavones were identified and flavonols were absent. The presence of the novel 2′-hydroxyflavone in five New World species may indicate some evolutionary link with the rough seeded taxa of the Old World.  相似文献

Current agronomic cultivars of white lupin (Lupinus albus) are intolerant of calcareous or limed soils. In these soils, high pH, bicarbonate (HCO3?), and calcium (Ca) concentrations are the major chemical stresses to the root system. To determine the responses of the root system to these factors, evaluate root architecture, and compare genotypes for tolerance, a series of liquid culture experiments was completed using root chambers that allowed the study of the root system in two dimensions. Each stress condition caused changes in different parts of the root system and there was no generalised stress response. HCO3? (5 mM) had the greatest effect on cultivars intolerant of calcareous soil; it decreased the dry weight of the shoot and caused the highest percentage of tap root deaths. HCO3? also discriminated between short (determinate) and long (indeterminate) roots, as it decreased the number and density of the determinate roots only. Calcium (3 mM) affected all parts of the root system. The tap root was shortened and showed an increased tortuousness in its path compared with 1 mM Ca, although no plants suffered tap root death. The numbers and densities of the two lateral root forms were also decreased, as were the lengths of the indeterminate roots. Stress from alkaline pH (7.5) media caused a lower number and density of determinate lateral roots to be produced than at pH 6.5. The experiments demonstrated that each culture condition elicited a definable stress response. Stress conditions altered the root architecture of genotypes reported to be tolerant of calcareous soil less than in intolerant genotypes. Although soil is more complex than liquid culture, it is possible that in a calcareous or limed soil each stress condition examined may affect the overall stress of the plant, and increased tolerance may result from tolerance to a single stress.  相似文献

pH above 6.0 reduces nodulation in Lupinus species   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Lupinus angustifolius and Lupinus pilosus differ substantially in root growth in response to high solution pH with L. angustifolius showing much greater sensitivity to pH above 6. This study examined the effect of pH above 6 on nodulation of these two species in buffered solution. Shoot weight and root weight and length in L. pilosus was not significantly affected by pH, whereas the growth of shoots and roots of L. angustifolius was markedly impaired by increasing pH. Total root length, the number of lateral roots, and the length of individual lateral roots were greatly decreased, resulting in decreased uptake of iron and phosphorus. In addition, L. angustifolius had a higher internal requirement for iron than L. pilosus. A solution pH above 6 decreased the number of nodule initials and nodules similarly in both species but decreased nodule mass much more in L. angustifolius. The effect of high pH on nodule formation occurred prior to that on host shoot growth. High pH also decreased nitrogen concentration and content in both species but to a greater extent for L. angustifolius. The results suggested that pH above 6 has a specific effect in the impairment of nodulation in lupins.  相似文献
