Population structure and genetic diversity in the Portuguese native breeds of sheep Algarvia (AL), Badana (BA), Galega Bragançana (GB), Galega Mirandesa (GM), Mondegueira (MO) and Churra da Terra Quente (TQ), as well as the exotic Assaf (AS), were analyzed by typing 25 microsatellite markers in 210 individuals. The markers used exhibited high levels of polymorphism, with means for total and effective number of alleles per locus of 13.0 and 4.2, respectively, and an expected heterozygosity of 0.72 across loci. The mean number of alleles per locus and expected heterozygosity were highest in GM and GB, and lowest in AS. Exclusive alleles were found in 10 of the 25 markers analysed, mostly in the AS breed. The proportion of loci which were not in Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium in each breed ranged between 0.12 (GB) and 0.40 (AL and GM), mostly due to a lower than expected number of heterozygotes in those loci. All breeds showed a significant deficit in heterozygosity, which was more pronounced in GM (FIS = 0.113) and BA (FIS = 0.103), suggesting that inbreeding might be a major concern in these breeds. The analysis of relationships among breeds, assessed by different methods, indicates that AS and AL are the more distanced breeds relative to the others, while the closest relationships were observed between TQ with MO and GM with GB. The estimated FST indicates that only 0.049 of the total genetic variability can be attributed to differences among breeds, and this ratio dropped to 0.029 when only the native breeds were considered. The analysis of individual distances based on allele-sharing indicates that only AS and AL had a tendency for animals of the same breed to cluster together, while for the other breeds there was overlapping among breeds. The results of this study confirm that native breeds of sheep represent an important reservoir of genetic diversity, even though the level of differentiation among closely located breeds tends to be rather small. For several of the breeds analyzed, the levels of inbreeding currently observed cause some apprehension, and recommend the establishment of appropriate conservation strategies, aimed at minimizing inbreeding to avoid further losses of genetic diversity.  相似文献

Genetic diversity studies in domestic animals aim at evaluating genetic variation within and across breeds mainly for conservation purposes. In Sicily, dairy sheep production represents an important resource for hilly and mountain areas economy. Their milk is used for the production of traditional raw milk cheeses, sometimes protected designation of origin (PDO) cheeses. In some cases, the quality of these products is linked to a specific breed, i.e. mono-breed labelled cheeses and it is therefore important to be able to distinguish the milk of a breed from that of others, in order to guarantee both the consumer and the breed itself. In order to investigate the genetic structure and to perform an assignment test, a total of 331 individuals (Barbaresca, BAR n = 57, Comisana, COM n = 65, Pinzirita, PIN n = 75, Sarda, SAR n = 64, and Valle del Belice, VDB n = 70) were analysed using a panel of 20 microsatellite markers. A total of 259 alleles were observed with average polymorphic information content equal to 0.76, showing that the microsatellites panel used was highly informative. Estimates of observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.65 in the BAR breed to 0.75 in the COM breed. The low value of genetic differentiation among breeds (Fst = 0.049) may indicate that these breeds are little differentiated probably due to common history and breeding practices. The low Fis and Fit values indicated low level of inbreeding within and among breeds. The unrooted neighbor-joining dendrogram obtained from the Reynold's genetic distances, and factorial correspondence analysis revealed a separation between BAR and the other sheep breeds. Recent migration rates were estimated, showing that four out of the five breeds have not received a significant proportion of migrants. Only for the PIN breed a recent introgression rate from the VDB breed (7.2%) was observed. The Bayesian assignment test showed that BAR and SAR breeds had a more definite genetic structure (proportion of assignment of 92% and 86.6%, respectively), whereas the lowest assignment value was found in the PIN breed (67.1%). Our results indicated high genetic variability, low inbreeding and low genetic differentiation, except for BAR breed, and were in accordance with geographical location, history, and breeding practices. The low robustness of the assignment test makes it unfeasible for traceability purposes, due to the high level of admixture, in particular for COM, PIN and VDB.  相似文献

Ten Greek sheep breeds were analysed at 28 microsatellite markers in order to estimate their genetic diversity and differentiation. This study aims to provide information on the genetic structure of the breeds analysed and the ancestral populations, and give indications and proposals for the conservation strategies. The breeds included were the local sheep breeds raised in different regions of Greece. In total, 310 animals were sampled. Non-biased average expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.68 ± 0.134 (Skopelos breed) to 0.76 ± 0.103 (Karagouniko breed) with an average of 0.74, while the average observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.626 ± 0.132 (Skopelos) to 0.74 ± 0.135 (Kefallenias). Estimates of inbreeding coefficient (Fis) were significant for all breeds studied, except for Kefallenias and Lesvos breeds (P < 0.05). The results of the phylogenetic relationships are in accordance with the geographical location of the breeds, the history of the origin of the breeds and the breeding practices. The phylogenetic tree showed three groupings according to the bootstrapping values. Correspondence analysis showed the isolation of the Skopelos breed and the grouping of Sfakia and Anogeiano breeds in a separate cluster.  相似文献

Susceptibility to scrapie in sheep is largely influenced by four polymorphic amino acid positions of the ovine PrP gene at codons 136, 141, 154 and 171. Genotyping of corresponding DNA polymorphism can be used as a basis for selection decisions. A total of 100 Red Maasai and 79 Black Herd Persian sheep, representative of the widely distributed breeds in Tanzania, were genotyped by real-time PCR. Genomic DNA was extracted from buccal epithelial cells. We report six genotypes derived from four different alleles, with the ARQ/ARQ genotype being more frequent (p = 0.0081) in the Red Maasai than in the Black Head Persian sheep. Our study also demonstrated higher allelic frequency (p = 0.00055) of the ARQ in the Red Maasai than in Black Head Persian sheep, while the AHQ allelic frequency was higher (p = 0.00086) in the Black Head Persian. All the animals were homozygous LL141. The highly susceptible VRQ allele was not found in any of the sheep breeds examined in this study. Both breeds were genetically low-level resistant to scrapie (NSP3). Due to absence or very low frequency of the ARR allele in the two breeds, selection for genetic resistance to scrapie through an increase of the ARR allele does not seem very relevant. If new breeds of sheep are to be introduced for crossbreeding in Tanzania, care should be taken to avoid import of the VRQ allele. To our knowledge, this is the first study exploring the PrP genotypes in sub-Saharan African sheep and in the Red Maasai and Black Head Persian sheep breeds in particular. The data provide base-line information on genetic susceptibility of the two sheep breeds to scrapie, which may be useful in policy formulation for prevention and future research on prion diseases.  相似文献

The sheep (Ovis aries L.) has been an important farm animal species since its domestication. A wide array of indigenous sheep breeds with abundant phenotypic diversity exists for domestication and selection. Therefore, assessing the genetic diversity of a local sheep resource using a multi-molecular system is helpful for maintaining and conserving those breeds. This study aimed to investigate the genetic diversity of three native Chinese sheep breeds (Tibetan sheep, Sishui Fur sheep, and Small-tailed Han sheep) using 15 microsatellite markers and the second exon of the DRA gene. In regards to the microsatellites, on average, 19 alleles per loci were observed among all individuals. Across loci, the HO within the population was 0.652 ± 0.022 in Tibetan sheep, 0.603 ± 0.023 in Small-tailed Han sheep and 0.635 ± 0.022 in SFS, and for most populations, the H E and H O were inconsistent. In addition, affluent private alleles within the breed indicated that the breeds have different domestication histories or sites. In regards to the 2 exon of the DRA gene, three haplotypes were constructed by seven single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), which were identified in the second DRA exon and inferred the potential for phenotypic variety in these Chinese native sheep. In summary, the current study reveals the importance of implementing effective conservation strategies for these three native Chinese sheep.  相似文献

To determine the genetic diversity and the origin of Chinese sheep, we analyzed 83 complete sequences of mtDNA D-loop from nine Chinese sheep breeds and a foreign breed, together with nine sheep and cattle available sequences from GenBank. The length of the sequences was considerably variable between 1103 and 1225 bp. The hapolotype diversity was 92.7%. The nucleotide diversity was 3.058%. And the mean nucleotide composition of the 83 sequences was 32.9% A, 29.8% T, 22.9% C and 14.4% G, respectively. The NJ phylogenetic tree (the number of replications of bootstrap test is 1000) revealed that there were three distinct major domestic sheep lineages (termed as lineages A–C) in the 10 breeds. The result indicated that Chinese native sheep breeds derive from three different maternal sources. The mismatch distribution analysis showed that the Fs values were −25.15, −12.28, −8.60 for the lineages A–C, respectively (P < 0.01), which suggested that atleast one population expansion events occur in the demographic history of Chinese sheep breeds.  相似文献

Electrophoretic separation of creatine kinase (ATP: creatine phosphotransferase, E.C. 2.7.3.2) isoenzymes in agarose gel was made in the serum of 93 sheep of three Slovenian domestic breeds (Solcavska, Pramenka and Bovska breeds). 44 sheep were pregnant between 112 and 135 days at the time of the blood collection. The median value of serum total CK activity for all animals investigated was 82 U/l. After direct immunoinhibition of CK with anti-M-CK monoclonal antibodies the total CK activity remained the same (88 U/l, P = 0.354). There were significant differences among breeds in CK activity for the Solcavska (101 U/l), Bovska (89 U/l) and Pramenka breeds (73 U/l), respectively (Kruskal–Wallis one way analysis of variance, P < 0.01), and between pregnant (105 U/l) and non-pregnant animals (76 U/l), irrespective of the breed (Mann–Whitney rank sum test, P < 0.05). According to electrophoresis, all non-pregnant sheep had exclusively free CK-BB serum bands activity. In all pregnant sheep coupled dimeric BB variant appeared as macro-CK type 1 in the range between 80% and 100% of total CK activity. The present study confirms the existence of an elimination mechanism for CK from the plasma abundance free CK-BB enzyme.  相似文献

Isoelectric focusing (IEF) was applied for screening milk protein variants in milk samples from altogether 1078 sheep of different breeds, in detail Black Faced Mutton sheep (SKF; n = 57), East Friesian Milk sheep (OMS; n = 254), Gray Horned Heath (GGH; n = 190), Merinoland sheep (MLS; n = 363), Merino Mutton sheep (MMS; n = 88), and Rhön sheep (RHO; n = 126). Besides the known genetic variants of αs1-casein (CSN1S1) (A, C, D), αs2-casein (CSN1S2) (A, B), and β-lactoglobulin (LGB) (A, B, C) additional variants could be demonstrated in CSN1S1 (H, I) and CSN1S2 (C, D) and their genetic control confirmed by segregation analyses. CSN1S1*H corresponds to a previously mentioned phenotype “X” occurring in OMS, whereas CSN1S1*I was identified for the first time in GGH. CSN1S2*C appeared in OMS, GGH, MLS, and RHO in low frequencies and CSN1S2*D in MLS. Within LGB all three alleles occurred in Merino breeds while α-lactalbumin (LAA) and κ-CN (CSN3) were monomorph at protein level. The haplotype CSN1S1*CCSN1S2*A was predominant in five out of six breeds with frequencies between 0.325 and 0.919.  相似文献

Sequence of the melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R) gene (the Extension locus) was obtained from a panel of 73 animals belonging to 9 Italian sheep breeds or populations (Appenninica, Bergamasca, Comisana, Cornigliese-like, Delle Langhe, Massese, Merinizzata Italiana, Sarda and Valle del Belice) with different coat colours. Evaluation of the identified polymorphisms on this phenotype was reported with in silico predictions and comparative approaches within and across breeds and across species. Five novel single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), organized in three haplotypes, were detected. Another haplotype, including the two missense mutations already described for the ED allele, was identified in few Massese sheep. One SNP (c.199C > T) caused a predicted amino acid substitution (p.R67C) in a highly conserved position of the first intracellular loop of the MC1R protein. The same substitution causes recessive pheomelanism in other species. We propose that the p.67C allele represents the recessive e allele at the ovine Extension series that was, so far, not completely recognized in sheep by classical genetic studies. This polymorphism was analysed in a total of 388 sheep of the 9 investigated breeds. The p.67C allele was identified only in the Valle del Belice breed (allele frequency of 21.3% in 176 analysed animals of this breed) in which the presence of epistatic white-determining loci might mask, at least in part, its effects. Confirming the effect of this novel allele on coat colour will lead to new perspectives on the composition of specialized coloured sheep lines.  相似文献

Our objective was to determine whether breed differences existed in response to exposure and treatment of virulent foot rot. Dorset (DS), 1/2 Dorper (DX), 3/4 or greater Dorper (DO), Gulf Coast Native (GC), Katahdin (KA), and St. Croix (SC) mature sheep and lambs were exposed to virulent foot rot in spring 2003. Treatment for foot rot was initiated in 132 lambs and 262 mature sheep in late July. There were eight pasture groups treated, two of which were minimally exposed to foot rot. Treatment included hoof paring, foot bathing with 10% zinc sulfate with surfactant, allowing the zinc sulfate to dry on the foot and moving to a small paddock that had not been exposed to small ruminants for more than 14 d. Foot bathing was repeated every 7 d for a maximum of five treatments. Animals that had not responded (odor or any indication of persistent infection) by then were culled from the flock. As an indication of severity of foot rot for each animal, the number of areas on the foot (interdigital and two digits for each foot), a foot score (0 = no infection found; 1 = infection of digits only; 2 = infection of interdigital area and could include digits), and presence of characteristic odor was recorded. Least squares means for number of areas infected were greater for mature than growing sheep (2.07 ± 0.16 versus 0.88 ± 0.31; P < 0.001), for highly than minimally exposed groups (2.89 ± 0.17 versus 0.05 ± 0.29; P < 0.001), and DX compared with other breed types (P < 0.03). Percentage of sheep with odor was similar between age groups, was greater in the highly exposed groups (11.4 ± 1.9 versus 2.1 ± 3.4; P < 0.02), and greater in DO compared with DS, KA, and SC breeds (P < 0.001). Foot score was similar among breeds and greater in the highly exposed groups (age by group, P < 0.05). Percentage of sheep culled for failure to respond to foot bath treatment was greater for the highly than minimally exposed group (22.9 ± 2.3 versus 0.0 ± 3.9; P < 0.001) and greater for mature sheep compared with lambs (P < 0.001) and similar among breeds. In November, four ewes in a large group and two lambs in a small group were determined to have foot rot and were immediately culled. The two groups containing these ewes were re-treated for 2 weeks and were determined to be free of foot rot (no further signs of lameness). Response to foot rot eradication appeared to be similar among breeds examined.  相似文献

Hucho taimen are listed as endangered in China. The population size has declined recently, prompting an increase in the level of listing from grade three in 2002 to grade five in 2006. We analyzed the genetic diversity of wild populations using 17 microsatellite markers to establish a scientific basis for conservation of this species. We collected tissue samples from four populations in the Heilongjiang River basin: Huma River (HM), Hutou (HT), Haiqing (HQ), and Zhuaji (ZJ). A total of 21 loci were amplified, 18 of which were polymorphic. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 2 to 9 (mean: 4.1905). There were 13 highly polymorphic loci and 5 moderately polymorphic loci. Analysis of five genetic diversity parameters (Na, Ne, Ho, He, and PIC) suggested moderate levels of diversity within the populations. The populations were ranked HT > HQ > ZJ > HM, but the differences in diversity were not statistically significant (P > 0.05). A comparison of variation among all four populations suggested Hardy–Weinberg disequilibrium at 20% of the loci. Genetic differentiation (Fst) was 0.0644 and the gene flow among populations was estimated at 3.36 individuals per generation. The majority of diversity (93.88%) occurred among individuals within a population. In contrast, relatively little (6.12%) of the genetic diversity was distributed between the populations. An analysis of genetic differentiation and genetic distance between pairs of populations revealed that both parameters were higher in comparisons of the HM population to the HT, HQ, and ZJ populations than among the three latter populations. This suggests that the HM population has a distinct genetic structure. We hypothesize that habitat degradation and excessive fishing, not low genetic diversity, has caused the decline in H. taimen populations. However, this species should be protected from further declines in genetic diversity.  相似文献

Pen feeding and metabolism trials were conducted to determine intake, diet digestibility and nitrogen (N) use in three hair sheep breeds with differing growth potential offered an alfalfa hay diet. For pen feeding, 24 6-mo-old wether lambs, equally representing the Barbados Blackbelly, Katahdin, and St. Croix breeds, were paired by breed, placed in 12 enclosed cement-floor pens (2.5 m × 3.5 m), and offered chopped alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.; 17.6% CP, 50.4% NDF, and 36.4% ADF) ad libitum. Lambs were allowed a 14-d adaptation period to pens and diets, and remained on trial for 56 d. Starting body weight (BW) was different (P < 0.05) among breeds (Barbados Blackbelly: 23.8 kg; Katahdin: 36.5 kg; St. Croix: 29.1 kg). Daily gain was not different (P < 0.10) between Katahdin (131 g/d) and St. Croix (117 g/d), but both were higher (P < 0.05) than Barbados Blackbelly (87 g/d). Daily dry matter hay intake was similar among breeds (107–109 g/kg BW0.75), and feed to gain ratio ranged from 8.7 in St. Croix and 9.1 in Katahdin to 10.5 in Barbados Blackbelly, but was not different (P > 0.10) among breeds. Six lambs per breed were used in the metabolism trial. Total DMI was greater (P < 0.01) for Katahdin (1196 g/d) than St. Croix (907 g/d) and Barbados Blackbelly (858 g/d), but was not different (P > 0.10) adjusted for body weight (mean: 71 g/kg BW0.75). Coefficients of apparent digestibility for DM (P < 0.06), OM (P < 0.06), N (P < 0.05), NDF (P < 0.08), and ADF (P < 0.08) were higher for Katahdin compared to Barbados Blackbelly with St. Croix intermediate. Intake of N (P < 0.01), feces N (P < 0.08), urine N (P < 0.01), absorbed N (P < 0.01), and retained N (P < 0.05) also were greater for Katahdin compared to St. Croix and Barbados Blackbelly. Blood glucose, urea-N, and creatinine were not different (P > 0.10) among breeds. Breeds differed in their growth performance in line with breed mature size, and differences were observed in N digestibility and absorption.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to assess genetic diversity, genetic differentiation relationship and population structure among 10 Chinese sheep populations using 5 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in MC1R gene. The genetic diversity indices suggested that the intra-population variation levels of Chinese Merino and Large-tailed Han breeds were lowest than Kazakh Fat-Rumped. Chinese sheep breeds have maintained a high intra-population variation levels (95.23%). The genetic differentiation patterns and genetic relationships among Chinese sheep breeds displayed a high consistency with the traditional classification. The cluster trees were constructed by UPMGA method. The results showed that Chinese indigenous sheep populations have distinct genetic differentiation. The inter-population variation levels in Chinese sheep populations indicated three geographically independent domestication events have occurred. The Bayesian cluster analyses also showed a reliable clustering pattern, which revealed three major clusters in Chinese indigenous sheep populations (Mongolian group, Kazakh group and Tibetan group), except for Duolang and Minxian Black-fur. There were probably caused by different breeding history, geography isolation and different levels of inbreeding. The findings supported the related records in literature, ten sheep populations originated on different time stage from the primogenitor population and communicated genetically with each other in the process of natural and artificial selection, and in different ecological environment. It is concluded that Chinese indigenous sheep have higher genetic variation and diversity, genetic differentiation exist between Chinese sheep populations.  相似文献

The lifetime performance of female sheep is one of the most important economic traits in sheep husbandry. In this investigation, a Weibull model was used to study the effects of ‘breed’, ‘number of lambings’, ‘age at first lambing’, ‘type of birth’ and ‘farm’ on the length of productive life (LPL). The data included records of 5191 female sheep of four different breeds on 236 breeding farms in northern Germany. The observation period in which the sheep were born or were removed from the farm ranged from January 2003 to December 2007. About 12% of the records were right-censored. All variables had a significant effect on LPL at a level of p < 0.001 except ‘type of birth’. The German Blackheaded Mutton breed showed the lowest risk ratio with 0.77 (SE = 0.17), while the Texel had the highest hazard rate (1.00). The relative culling risk initially decreased from the first (5.73, SE = 0.09) to the seventh lambing (0.36, SE = 0.12), and then increased until lambing number nine. The highest relative culling risk was calculated at an age of 395 to less than 455 days at first lambing (1.00). Animals younger than 395 days at first lambing showed the lowest risk ratio (0.56, SE = 0.05). The culling risk for the effect ‘farm’ ranged from 0.3 to 3.1. A differentiation of environmental, housing or management effects was not feasible with this data. But the results offer some interesting options for further studies.  相似文献

In this study the growth of rams of 3 different sheep breeds with extremely different growth patterns (Hungarian Merino, HM; American Suffolk, AS; and Dutch Texel, DT) were modelled. Two models (modified Gompertz and logistic) were fitted to experimental data generated from successive computer tomography (CT) measurements. In each breed the data fitted the Gompertz model with better precision (lower RSS values). However, the symmetric logistic function fitted the late maturing fat and long loin of the AS lambs more accurately. These models have consequently been validated to give in vivo predictions of market specific products and the optimal slaughter weight of each breed. Based on the results of the Gompertz model, medium sized sheep breeds with low growth capacity (e.g. HM) should be slaughtered when their live weight is between 21 and 33 kg at an age of 3–5 months. The large-sized, slow maturing breeds (AS) should be slaughtered between 27 and 45 kg, at a similar age to the HM lambs. The early maturing breed (DT) should not be reared older than 2–3.5 months of age, with a live weight varying between 24 and 36 kg.  相似文献

Genetic parameters were estimated for cold carcase weight (CCW), carcase conformation (CON), carcase fat class (FAT), age at slaughter (AGE) and average daily carcase gain (ADCG) in 14 common UK breeds of cattle. These included crossbred animals but purebred datasets were also analysed for the most populous sire-breeds. Heritability estimates for beef breeds that were significant ranged from 0.24 to 0.44, 0.12 to 0.35, 0.12 to 0.36, 0.15 to 0.38 and 0.26 to 0.43 for CCW, CON, FAT, AGE and ADCG, respectively. For Holstein-Friesian, a dairy breed, heritability estimates were consistently lower than most beef breeds with estimates of 0.12, 0.13, 0.13, 0.06 and 0.15 for CCW, CON, FAT, AGE and ADCG, respectively. In all breed groups, genetic correlations were positive between CCW, CON and ADCG. In general, genetic correlations were moderate between CCW and CON (0.13 to 0.77), moderate to strong between CCW and ADCG (0.57 to 0.98) and weak or moderate between CON and ADCG (0.12 to 0.82). Genetic correlations for FAT with CCW (−  0.20 to −  0.42) and CON (−  0.16 to −  0.52) tended to be negative in the beef breed but were positive in the dairy breed, although not significant between CCW and FAT. For most beef breeds genetic correlations between AGE and carcase traits were not significant with the exceptions of AGE and CCW for Simmental (−  0.15) and Salers (−  0.24), AGE and CON for Limousin (0.15) and Simmental (0.14) and AGE and FAT from three sire-breeds (−  0.17 to −  0.35). However, the correlation between AGE and ADCG was negative and moderate to strong in magnitude (−  0.23 to −  0.67) in all beef breeds as expected since faster-growing animals reach slaughter age earlier. For Holstein-Friesian, all genetic correlations with AGE were negative and moderate to strong. Genetic correlations indicate that selection for increased carcase weight should simultaneously increase growth rate and improve conformation in all breeds and reduce carcase fatness in the majority of beef breeds. The results indicate that there is genetic variation in all five traits suitable for undertaking genetic improvement of carcase traits and age at slaughter; however, there are apparent breed differences. The use of abattoir-derived phenotypes for undertaking genetic improvement is an example where the supply chain can work together to share information to enable the cattle industry to move forward.  相似文献

Chinese indigenous pig breeds are recognized as an invaluable component of the world''s pig genetic resources and are divided traditionally into six types. Twenty-six microsatellite markers recommended by the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) and ISAG (International Society of Animal Genetics) were employed to analyze the genetic diversity of 18 Chinese indigenous pig breeds with 1001 individuals representing five types, and three commercial breeds with 184 individuals. The observed heterozygosity, unbiased expected heterozygosity and the observed and effective number of alleles were used to estimate the genetic variation of each indigenous breed. The unbiased expected heterozygosity ranged between 0.700 (Mashen) and 0.876 (Guanling), which implies that there is an abundant genetic variation stored in Chinese indigenous pig breeds. Breed differentiation was shown by fixation indices (FIT, FIS, and FST). The FST per locus varied from 0.019 (S0090) to 0.170 (SW951), and the average FST of all loci was 0.077, which means that most of the genetic variation was kept within breeds and only a little of the genetic variation exists between populations. The Neighbor-Joining tree was constructed based on the Nei DA (1978) distances and one large cluster with all local breeds but the Mashen breed, was obtained. Four smaller sub-clusters were also found, which included two to four breeds each. These results, however, did not completely agree with the traditional type of classification. A Neighbor-Joining dendrogram of individuals was established from the distance of – ln(proportions of shared alleles); 92.14% of the individuals were clustered with their own breeds, which implies that this method is useful for breed demarcation. This extensive research on pig genetic diversity in China indicates that these 18 Chinese indigenous breeds may have one common ancestor, helps us to better understand the relative distinctiveness of pig genetic resources, and will assist in developing a national plan for the conservation and utilization of Chinese indigenous pig breeds.  相似文献

Body weights, fecal egg counts (FEC), and packed cell volumes (PCV) of hair sheep and wool sheep crossbred lambs were compared over 8 weeks following administration of a single dose of approximately 10,000 third-stage larvae of Haemonchus contortus. Hair sheep lambs (n=17) were reciprocal crosses between mainland USA populations of Barbados Blackbelly (BB) and Virgin Islands White (VIW) sheep. Wool sheep lambs (n=64) were from a crossbred composite of 50% Dorset, 25% Rambouillet, and 25% Finnish Landrace breeding. Lambs of both breed types continued to grow during the period of infection. Mean weights were higher for wool lambs (39.7±0.8 kg) than for hair lambs (28.2±1.5 kg). FEC increased to week 5 in both breed groups and remained elevated in wool lambs through week 7 but declined sharply in hair lambs after week 5. Mean FEC for weeks 4 through 8 were 4011±361 eggs per gram of feces (epg) in wool lambs, and 1135±196 epg in hair lambs. PCV declined through week 7 in wool lambs but stabilized and then increased after week 4 in hair lambs. Mean PCV in weeks 4 through 8 were 22.4±0.3% in wool lambs and 24.3±0.5% in hair lambs. These results suggest that Caribbean hair breeds may be able to contribute significantly to development of parasite-resistant sheep populations.
