Abstract  1. Maculinea alcon uses three different species of Myrmica host ants along a north–south gradient in Europe. Based on this geographical variation in host ant use, Elmes et al . (1994) suggested that M. alcon might consist of three or more cryptic species or host races, each using a single and different host-ant species.
2. Population-specific differences in allozyme genotypes of M. alcon in Denmark ( Gadeberg & Boomsma, 1997 ) have suggested that genetically differentiated forms may occur in a gradient across Denmark, possibly in relation to the use of different host ants.
3. It was found that two host-ant species are indeed used as hosts in Denmark, but not in a clear-cut north–south gradient. Furthermore, specificity was not complete for many M. alcon populations. Of five populations investigated in detail, one used primarily M. rubra as a host, another exclusively used M. ruginodis , while the other three populations used both ant species. No population in Denmark used M. scabrinodis as a host, although this species was present in the habitat and is known to be a host in central and southern Europe.
4. In terms of number of parasites per nest and number of nests parasitised, M. rubra seems to be a more suitable host in populations where two host species are used simultaneously. Host-ant species has an influence on caterpillar size but this varies geographically. Analyses of pupae did not, however, show size differences between M. alcon raised in M. rubra and M. ruginodis nests.
5. The geographical mosaic of host specificity and demography of M. alcon in Denmark probably reflects the co-evolution of M. alcon with two alternative host species. This system therefore provides an interesting opportunity for studying details of the evolution of parasite specificity and the dynamics of host-race formation.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The mandibular glands of Myrmica ants contain, among other substances, 3-octanol, a chiral substance, 90% of it being the R -enantiomer in M. scabrinodis Nyl., ruhra L. and ruginodis Nyl. (Cammaerts et al. , 1985). Pure R and S 3-octanol has been prepared and tested on M. rubra and scabrinodis , workers. Both species react specifically only to the R enantiomer; in M. rubra this constituent arrests foragers briefly, and in M. scahrinodis it attracts them and incites them to walk more quickly. It is shown that, in M. scahrinodis , the naturally produced mixture of R and S 3-octanol (proportions of 9:1, v/v) is more active than the pure R enantiomer or a mixture of R and S 3-octanol (5:5 v/v).  相似文献

Maculinea butterflies obligatory parasitize certain species of Myrmica ants. Thus, the presence of the host ant species is a limiting factor for the survival of a Maculinea population. Here, we analyse the influence of vegetation structure and ground temperature on ant diversity and abundance on Maculinea habitats, with the final aim of identifying the environmental variables determining patterns of variation in species composition in order to recommend a mowing regime that will promote our three target species: Maculinea teleius, M. nausithous and M. alcon. Experimental plots with different mowing regimes were established at eight sites in South-Eastern Germany, a region which still contains a number of relatively large, stable populations of these threatened butterfly species. Among the seven different ant species recorded, four belong to the genus Myrmica (M. scabrinodis, M. rubra, M. ruginodis and M. vandeli). Among these, M. scabrinodis results most abundant at all sites. In a CCA analysis of environmental variables recorded at the studied plots, ant species diversity appears largely determined by litter cover, mean temperature, and mean grass cover. Mowing once a year, in the second half of September, after the larvae have left their host plants, enhances the abundance of Myrmica ants in the meadows, and would be the best management compromise for all three species.  相似文献

Expression of HSP70 is induced by stress factors, including sub-lethal chilling, but the role of HSP70 for overcoming consequenses of cold stress is not clear. If the role is positive, the level of HSP70 expression might be higher in populations from colder climates. By use of immunoblotting we investigated dynamics of HSP70 expression in response to cold stress in two Myrmica species from three localities of different latitude (50, 60 and 67 degrees N). The results showed that in the more thermophilic species Myrmica rubra expression of HSP70 after cold stress was more intense. Expression traits within both species did not show direct relationship with latitude. In M. rubra the southernmost population and in M. ruginodis the northernmost one displayed the fastest and most intense response. However, in M. rubra the two other studied populations were similar in timing and intensity of the response, while in M. ruginodis the intermediate population showed the slowest and weakest response. The data suggest that the expression of HSP70 might play the most considerable role in the adaptation to cold in the southernmost population of M. ruginodis.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Queens of two species of the ant genus Myrmica bonded to workers of the species M. rubra L. as the latter emerge from the pupal skin can use these workers nearly 6 months later to arrest gyne formation in sex-competent larvae of the same species. Queens of M. ruginodis Nylander var. microgyria (Brian & Brian, 1949) are as good at this as the natural M. rubra , but those of M. sabuleti Meinert (of a race close to M. scabrinodis) are not. Though the M. sabuleti queens induce normal aggression against sexualizing larvae, they are unable to prevent some or all of the workers feeding larvae as though they were queenless. However, queens from different colonies of M. rubra adopted by queenless populations of workers in spring, control their brood-rearing behaviour perfectly. M. rubra workers from different colonies bring gynes to maturity from female sexual larvae at different average sizes. When workers from two such sources are mixed in equal proportions, the size of gyne larva produced after a week's culture corresponds with that of one of the worker populations; it is not intermediate in size. Also, large workers can rear larger gyne-larvae than small workers of the same age. This is only true if the workers have been living with queens all the time from emergence as an imago to the moment the experiment was set. Size mixtures only achieve the same size larvae as a pure culture of small workers would. A possible reason for this is that small workers exclude the larger ones from the nursery areas of the nest.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Respiratory rates of larvae of Myrmica scabrinodis Nyl. and Lasius flavus Fab. were measured at 5, 15 and 25°C using the micro-Warburg technique. Larvae collected in the winter and spring were a mixture of all three castes. In the summer collection it was possible to separate the gyne-potential larvae from the others by virtue of their greater size. The respiration of the larvae of both species showed a decreasing response to temperature as they developed. The winter larvae of L. flavus could be categorized into two groups on the basis of the proportions of dry matter. They were also significantly different in their weight-specific respiratory rate, and their response to temperature changes. Gyne larvae were about 7 times as heavy as the others, but their weight-specific respiratory rate was the same as in the other larvae in M. scabrinodis and actually higher in L. flavus. The highest respiratory rates occurred when the dry matter content of the larvae was lowest, in the summer collection for M. scabrinodis and the spring collection for L. flavus.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Survival of four species of ants, Myrmica rubra, Myrmica scabrinodis, Lasius niger and Lasius flavus , exposed to prolonged inundation and the drinking of brackish water, was experimentally determined.
2. In most of the experiments, survival of Lasius flavus workers was much worse than either Lasius niger or Myrmica scabrinodis .
3. After inundation with brackish water, and drinking of brackish water for more than 3 weeks, survival of workers of Myrmica rubra was also more affected than that of Lasius niger and Myrmica scabrinodis .
4. As a rule, survival of dealated queens after inundation appeared to be better in Lasius flavus and Lasius niger , but worse in Myrmica rubra , compared with worker survival.
5. After surviving inundation, the capacity to produce eggs and workers was only slightly affected in queens of both Lusius species.
6. The conclusions based on the experimental mortality rates seem to be consistent both with ant species distribution and with frequency of inundation and salt stress in different parts of the coastal plain and surrounding sand-dunes on the Dutch Wadden island Schiermonnikoog.  相似文献

Populations of the common killifish Fundulus heteroclitus are found along a latitudinal temperature gradient in habitats with high thermal variability. The objectives of this study were to assess the effects of temperature and population of origin on killifish swimming performance (assessed as critical swimming speed, U(crit)). Acclimated fish from northern and southern killifish populations demonstrated a wide zone (from 7 degrees to 33 degrees C) over which U(crit) showed little change with temperature, with performance declining significantly only at lower temperatures. Although we observed significant differences in swimming performance between a northern and a southern population of killifish in one experiment, with northern fish having an approximately 1.5-fold-greater U(crit) than southern fish across all acclimation temperatures, we were unable to replicate this finding in other populations or collection years, and performance was consistently high across all populations and at both low (7 degrees C) and high (23 degrees C) acclimation temperatures. The poor swimming performance of southern killifish from a single collection year was correlated with low muscle [glycogen] rather than with other indicators of fuel stores or body condition. Killifish acclimated to 18 degrees C and acutely challenged at temperatures of 5 degrees , 18 degrees , 25 degrees , or 34 degrees C showed modest thermal sensitivity of U(crit) between 18 degrees and 34 degrees C, with performance declining substantially at 5 degrees C. Thus, much of the zone of relative thermal insensitivity of swimming performance is intrinsic in this species rather than acquired as a result of acclimation. These data suggest that killifish are broadly tolerant of changing temperatures, whether acute or chronic, and demonstrate little evidence of local adaptation in endurance swimming performance in populations from different thermal habitats.  相似文献

Two alleles are encoded at the malate dehydrogenase locus in largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides. Populations in the extreme northern areas of the range of this fish are fixed or nearly fixed for the B1 allele, whereas populations in Florida are fixed for the alternative allele, B2. The MDH-B1B1 and MDH-B2B2 allelic isozymes were isolated by preparative starch gel electrophoresis and subjected to in vitro kinetic analyses. The apparent Km (oxaloacetate) for each of these allelic isozymes was determined at 25, 30, and 35 degrees C. The Km values for both isozymes increased with increasing temperature and were not significantly different from each other at 25 and 35 degrees C. However, at 30 degrees C the Km value for the MDH-B1B1 allelic isozyme was higher than that for the MDH-B2B2 isozyme (i.e., 5.4 X 10(-5) vs 3.3 X 10(-5)). These results are consistent with the hypothesis that the different environmental temperatures at different latitudes may be at least partially responsible for the north-south cline in Mdh-B allele frequencies.  相似文献

The concern of this research was with the susceptibility of rodent reproduction to latitudinal acclimatization. More specifically, the relationship between ambient temperature and reproductive success was examined in house mice and deer mice whose ancestors had been trapped in northern versus southern climates (Alberta vs. Texas). Third generation adults of each of these four populations were paired and challenged to breed at -6 degrees, 3 degrees, 23 degrees or 34 degrees C. A 50-day period of gradual temperature adaptation preceded pairing. House mice, regardless of their geographic origin, were found to be relatively insensitive to extreme temperatures. Many pairs of both the Alberta and Texas stocks of this species still produced offspring when maintained at the experimental extremes of -6 degrees and 34 degrees C. In marked contrast, both northern and southern deer mice exhibited relatively narrow temperature ranges within which maximum breeding occurred: -6 degrees to 3 degrees for Texas deer mice and only at 23 degrees C for Alberta deer mice. Thus there is no evidence in either species that reproduction is either less sensitive to cold in northern latitudes or less sensitive to heat in southern latitudes; indeed, somewhat the reverse situation exists in deer mice. Evolutionarily, latitudinal considerations seem to have been of secondary rather than of primary importance in shaping the relationship between ambient temperature and reproduction in these two species.  相似文献

We measured the egg size of six geographic populations of the pitcher-plant mosquito, Wyeomyia smithii, from Florida (30 degrees N) to Ontario (49 degrees N). Populations from northern latitudes produced larger eggs than populations from southern latitudes. Egg size increased with increasing latitude more rapidly when larvae were reared under low rather than high density. One southern (30 degrees N) and one northern (49 degrees N) population of W. smithii that persisted through 10 generations of selection for increased persistence under conditions of chronic thermal- and nutrient-limiting stress (conditions similar to southern rather than northern habitats) produced smaller eggs more rapidly than unselected control lines. However, there were no differences in lifetime fecundity or fertility between control and selected lines. Thus, laboratory evolution in an environment representative of extreme southern latitudes caused evolutionary changes consistent with geographic patterns of egg size. These results implicate temperature as a selective factor influencing the geographic variation of egg size in W. smithii, and demonstrate a novel trade-off in reproductive allocation between egg size and egg maturation time.  相似文献

Metabolic variability across latitudinal populations of gammarid amphipods was examined in the summer by determining whole-animal rates of oxygen uptake (M(o)?) in four species with overlapping distribution patterns in the northeast Atlantic and Arctic oceans. Comparisons were made between an arctic/boreal species, Gammarus setosus, a subarctic/boreal species, Gammarus oceanicus, a boreal/temperate species, Gammarus duebeni duebeni, and a temperate species, Gammarus locusta. Measurements included acclimatized M(o)? in all four species and M(o)? after acclimation to 10°C in two populations of G. oceanicus and G. locusta. In G. oceanicus, acclimatized M(o)? declined with latitude (13° to 5°C) so that metabolic rates were lower in subarctic (79°N) relative to temperate (58°N) populations and similar to the values in G. setosus at 79°N. Consequently, there was no evidence for metabolic rate compensation in the colder-water, high-latitude populations in the summer. Further examination of the specific effects of temperature revealed similarities in M(o)? between populations of G. oceanicus acclimated at 10°C and similarities in thermal sensitivity (Q(10)) and activation energies (E(a)) on exposure to acute temperature change. In sharp contrast, there was no variation in summer acclimatized M(o)? with latitude in either G. d. duebeni between 48° and 70°N or G. locusta between 38° and 53°N. Instead, the two species maintained relatively high metabolic rates across latitudes, which were associated in G. locusta with differences in M(o)? and with Q(10) and E(a) values in amphipods acclimated at 10°C. The ability to compensate metabolic rate with latitude in the summer suggests greater metabolic flexibility, which predicts a greater capacity for survival during climate change of the temperate/boreal over the subarctic and arctic gammarid species.  相似文献

High dispersal risks of ant queens make staying in the natal patch more attractive than long range dispersal. These alternative strategies and the mode of colony founding determine the average number of queens in the population. Increasing competition and queen predation make independent colony founding increasingly difficult and the only option for new queens to reproduce in the habitat patch may be to enter an existing colony. The effect of nest-site availability to the number of queens was studied in successional spruce-dominated taiga forests in facultatively polygynous ants Myrmica ruginodis, M. sulcinodis, Leptothorax acervorum, Formica sanguinea and F. truncorum. Decreasing relatedness among worker nestmates supports an association between increasing habitat age and polygyny to some extent. M. sulcinodis and L. acervorum persist in this type of taiga only for a relatively short period. Relatedness varied only slightly among populations, but lower relatedness estimated in other studies suggested higher levels of polygyny in older populations. In M. ruginodis there was more variation in relatedness and it was possibly connected to the relative proportions of the two social forms of the species. In F. sanguinea and F. truncorum the decrease in relatedness with increasing age of the habitat was clearest. Other factors favouring limited dispersal and acceptance of new queens in the colonies are, however, hard to separate.  相似文献

Twenty-one bacterial associations isolated from the soda lakes of the southern Transbaikal region were found to be able to actively grow at pH 9-10 on methanol as the source of carbon and energy. Two alkalitolerant facultatively methylotrophic strains, Bur 3 and Bur 5, were obtained in pure cultures. Both strains represent gram-negative, nonmotile, bean-shaped, encapsulated cells that reproduce by binary fission. The strains are able to grow at temperatures ranging from 6 to 42 degrees C, with an optimum growth temperature of 25-29 degrees C (strain Bur 3) and 35-37 degrees C (strain Bur 5) and at pH between 6.5 and 9.5, with an optimum pH value of 8.0-8.5. At pH 9.0, strain Bur 3 exhibits an increased content of phosphatidylglycerol and a decreased content of phosphatidylethanolamine. Strains Bur 3 and Bur 5 are similar in the G + C content of their DNAs (66.2 and 65.5 mol %, respectively) and in the type of the dominant ubiquinone (Q10). Unlike Bur 5, strain Bur 3 is able to grow autotrophically in an atmosphere of CO2 + O2 + H2. The strains oxidize, by the respective dehydrogenases, methanol to CO2, which is assimilated via the ribulose bisphosphate pathway. Ammonium ions are assimilated in the glutamate cycle and by the reductive amination of alpha-ketoglutarate. The strains are highly homologous to each other (92%) and are much less homologous (at a level of 28-35%) to representatives of the genus Ancylobacter, A. aquaticus ATCC 25396T and A. vacuolatum DSM 1277. Based on the results obtained, both strains are assigned to a new species, Ancylobacter natronum sp. nov.  相似文献

Overwintering diapause in Helicoverpa armigera, a multivoltine species, is controlled by response to photoperiod and temperature. Photoperiodic responses from 5 different geographical populations showed that the variation in critical photoperiod for diapause induction was positively related to the latitudinal origin of the populations at 20, 22 and 25 °C. Diapause response to photoperiod and temperature was quite different between northern and southern populations, being highly sensitive to photoperiod in northern populations and temperature dependence in southern populations. Diapause pupae from southern population showed a significantly shorter diapause duration than from northern-most populations when they were cultured at 20, 22, 25, 28 and 31 °C; by contrast, overwintering pupae from southern populations emerged significantly later than from northern populations when they were maintained in natural conditions, showing a clinal latitudinal variation in diapause termination. Diapause-inducing temperature had a significant effect on diapause duration, but with a significant difference between southern and northern populations. The higher rearing temperature of 22 °C evoked a more intense diapause than did 20 °C in northern populations; but a less intense diapause in southern population. Cold exposure (chilling) is not necessary to break the pupal diapause. The higher the temperature, the quicker the diapause terminated. Response of diapause termination to chilling showed that northern populations were more sensitive to chilling than southern population.  相似文献

It has been suggested that the socially parasitic butterfly Maculinea alcon detects ant odours before ovipositing on initial larval food plants near colonies of its obligate ant host Myrmica ruginodis. It has also been suggested that overcrowding on food plants near M. ruginodis is avoided by an ability to detect high egg loads, resulting in a switch to selecting plants near less suitable ant species. If confirmed, this hypothesis (H1) would have serious implications for the application of current population models aimed at the conservation of endangered Maculinea species, which are based on the null hypothesis (H0) that females randomly select food plants whose flower buds are at a precise phenological stage, making oviposition independent of ants. If H1 were wrong, practical management based upon its assumptions could lead to the extinction of protected populations. We present data for the five European species of Maculinea which show that (i) each oviposits on a phenologically restricted flower-bud stage, which accounts for the apparent host-ant-mediated niche separation in sympatric populations of Maculinea nausithous and Maculinea teleius, (ii) there is no temporal shift in oviposition by Maculinea arion in relation to host ant distribution or egg density, and (iii) oviposition patterns in 13 populations of M. alcon's closest relative, Macaulinea rebeli, conform to H0 not H1 predictions. It is concluded that conservation measures should continue to be based on H0.  相似文献

Contractile properties of the fast-twitch glycolytic (FG) portion of the iliofibularis muscle and sprint running performance were studied at approximately 5 degrees C intervals from 15-44 degrees C in the lizard Dipsosaurus dorsalis. Maximal running velocity (VR) and stride frequency (f) were both greatest when body temperature (Tb) was 40 degrees C, the field-active Tb in Dipsosaurus. At 40 degrees C VR was 4.3 +/- 0.2 m/s and f was 13.5 +/- 0.5 s-1. Between 25 and 40 degrees C, the thermal dependencies of VR and f were approximately constant (Q10's of 1.31 and 1.36 got VR and f, respectively). Below 25 degrees C performance declined more markedly with decreasing temperature. At 20 degrees C strides were qualitatively normal, but VR was only half of the value at 25 degrees C. At 15 degrees C the lizards were substantially incapacitated, and VR was 10% of the value at 20 degrees C. Stride length was approximately 0.33 m and changed very little with Tb from 20-44 degrees C. The time dependent contractile properties of FG muscle were affected more by temperature than was sprint performance. The maximal velocity of shortening at zero load (VO) was 18.7 0/s at 40 degrees C and had a Q10 of 1.7 from 25-40 degrees C. Maximal power output (Wmax) determined from the force-velocity curve was 464 W/kg at 40 degrees C. Below 40 degrees C max varied with temperature with a Q10 of 2-3. The shape of the force-velocity curve changed little with temperature (Wmax/POVO = 0.11). Between 25 and 40 degrees C a relatively temperature-independent process must modulate the effects of temperature on the contractile properties of the muscles that supply the power for burst locomotion. Storage and recovery of elastic energy appears to be a likely candidate for such a process. Below 25 degrees C, however, the contraction time is prolonged to such an extent that the f attainable is limited by the minimum time taken to contract and relax the muscles.  相似文献

Temperature acclimation of respiration may contribute to climatic adaptation and thus differ among populations from contrasting climates. Short-term temperature responses of foliar dark respiration were measured in 33-yr-old trees of jack pine (Pinus banksiana) in eight populations of wide-ranging origin (44-55 degrees N) grown in a common garden at 46.7 degrees N. It was tested whether seasonal adjustments in respiration and population differences in this regard resulted from changes in base respiration rate at 5 degrees C (R(5)) or Q(10) (temperature sensitivity) and covaried with nitrogen and soluble sugars. In all populations, acclimation was manifest primarily through shifts in R(5) rather than altered Q(10). R(5) was higher in cooler periods in late autumn and winter and lower in spring and summer, inversely tracking variation in ambient air temperature. Overall, R(5) covaried with sugars and not with nitrogen. Although acclimation was comparable among all populations, the observed seasonal ranges in R(5) and Q(10) were greater in populations originating from warmer than from colder sites. Population differences in respiratory traits appeared associated with autumnal cold hardening. Common patterns of respiratory temperature acclimation among biogeographically diverse populations provide a basis for predicting respiratory carbon fluxes in a wide-ranging species.  相似文献

The discontinuous gas exchange cycle (DGC), the cyclic release of CO(2) and uptake of O(2), were investigated in workers and female and male alates of the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren, using real-time CO(2) emission measurement by flow-through respirometry. All S. invicta castes displayed discontinuous emission of CO(2) in the temperature range of 15-25 degrees C, but only male alates and workers exhibited a DGC at 30 degrees C. The closed (C) and flutter (F) periods of the DGC were distinguishable in alates of both sexes at the lowest temperature, but not clearly differentiated in females at temperatures above 15 degrees C, in males above 20 degrees C, or workers at any temperature. DGC frequency increased for all castes as temperature increased, ranging from a low of 0.9+/-0.05 mHz (male alates at 15 degrees C) to 18+/-0.79 mHz (workers at 30 degrees C). O period (or burst) volumes of all castes decreased as temperature increased, and increased with body mass - this mass effect was most pronounced at lower temperatures. Q(10) values for DGC frequency (4.27, 5.81, and 5.62 for workers, female and male alates, respectively) were high compared with Q(10)'s for standard Vdot;(CO(2)). Differences in the salient characteristics of the DGC between castes are presented and discussed, and S. invicta DGC patterns are compared to known values for some other ant species.  相似文献

Until recently it had been widely accepted that birds are energetically adapted to the latitude they inhabit, having an increased basal metabolic rate (BMR) at higher latitudes. Latterly, this general view has been questioned and the influence of phenotypic flexibility, due to factors such as habitat, life‐history or acclimatization has received increased attention. In particular, focus has been directed towards comparing species from arid and mesic habitats, but less attention has been given to species which breed in cold climates. We chose to study northern wheatears Oenanthe oenanthe from two populations at different latitudes (southern Norway, Iceland), but with similar life‐histories and habitat requirements throughout the year, in a common‐garden experiment. In order to assess true latitudinal trends in metabolic rate, we estimated the nocturnal resting metabolic rate (RMR) of northern wheatears from southern Norway and Iceland at different temperatures from 0° to 30°C. We found that Norwegian birds had overall lower metabolic rates than Icelandic birds, which were also slightly larger. This difference was not observed at 0°C, which might indicate that Icelandic birds might rely on better feather insulation reducing metabolic costs at very low temperatures. At temperatures above 10°C birds of both populations had constant metabolic values, indicating that their thermoneutral range almost completely covered the temperatures experienced during the breeding period. This study shows that the northern wheatear, which is one of only a few insectivorous long‐distance migratory songbirds occurring at such high latitudes, has evolved metabolic adaptations to life at cold temperatures which are endogenously determined.  相似文献
