Antioxidative systems and the contents of pigments, malondialdehyde, soluble protein, and carbohydrate were investigated in sun-and shade-acclimated leaves of sour orange (Citrus aurantium)trees that had been grown for 7.5 years under ambient and elevated(+300 µmol mol–1) atmospheric CO2 concentrations.Sunacclimated leaves contained higher ascorbate, glutathioneand soluble carbohydrate contents and higher catalase activitiesthan shade-acclimated leaves. The activities of superoxide dismutases, which belonged to the family of Cu/Zn-isozymes, were similarin sunand shade-acclimated leaves and decreased in responseto enhanced CO2. In shade-acclimated leaves, none of the otherparameters studied was affected by elevated CO2. In sun-acclimatedleaves elevated CO2 caused increases in carbohydrate and ascorbatecontents. There was no evidence for enhanced lipid peroxidationas assessed from the determination of the malondialdehyde contentsunder either conditions. Agrostis capillaris L.4 Festuca vivipara L. and Poa alpinaL.were grown in outdoor open-top chambers at either ambient (340µmol mol–1) or elevated (680 µmol–1)CO2 for periods from 79 to 189 d. Under these conditions thereis increased growth of A. caplllarls and P. alpina, but reducedgrowth of F. vivipara. Nutrient use efficiency, nutrient productivity(total plant dry weight gain per unit of nutrient) and nutrientallocation of all three grass species were measured in an attemptto understand their individual growth responses further andto determine whether altered nutrient-use efficiencies and productivitiesenable plants exposed to an elevated atmospheric CO2 environmentto overcome potential limitations to growth imposed by soilfertility. Total uptake of nutrients was, in general, greater in plantsof A. capillaris and P. alpina (with the exception of N andK in the latter) when grown at 680 µmol mol–1 CO2.In F. vivipara, however, uptake was considerably reduced inplants grown at the higher CO2 concentration. Overall, a doubling of atmospheric CO2 concentration had littleeffect on the nutrient use efficiency or productivity of A.capillaris. Reductions in tissue nutrient content resulted fromincreased plant growth and not altered nutrient use efficiency. In P. alpina, potassium, magnesium and calcium productivitieswere significantly reduced and photosynthetic nitrogen and phosphorususe efficiencies were doubled at elevated CO2 with respect toplants grown at ambient CO2 F. vivipara grown for 189 d showedthe most marked changes in nutrient use efficiency and nutrientproductivity (on an extracted dry weight basis) when grown atelevated CO2, F. vivipara grown at elevated CO2 however, showedlarge increases in the ratio of non-structural carbohydrateto nitrogen content of leaves and reproductive tissues, indicatinga substantial imbalance between the production and utilizationof assimilate. Lehnherr, B. M?chler, F. and N?sberger, J. 1985. Effect of CO2concentration during growth on a CO2 concentrating mechanismin white clover as predicted from differential 14CO2/12CO2 uptake.-J. exp. Bot. 36: 1835-1841. White clover was grown at 20 and100 Pa p(CO2). The CO2 response of net photosynthesis and differentialuptake of 14CO2 and 12CO2 by leaves were measured at varioustemperatures and at various O2 and CO2 partial pressures andcompared with predictions from ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenasekinetics. Discrepancies between the observed gas exchange characteristicsfor the leaves and those predicted from the enzyme kineticswere interpreted as being due to a CO2 concentrating mechanism.Plants grown at 20 Pa p(CO2) showed a higher affinity for CO2than plants grown at 100 Pa p(CO2) when measured at 10 ?C. Nodifference in affinity was found at 30 ?C. The postulated CO2concentrating effect was greater in plants grown at low CO2than in plants grown at high CO2 concentration and occurredonly at low temperature and low CO2 partial pressure. It issuggested that plants grown at the lower CO2 partial pressurehave a higher affinity for CO2 due to a more efficient CO2 concentratingsystem than plants grown at the higher CO2 partial pressure. Plants of Phaseolus vulgaris were grown from seed in open-topgrowth chambers at the present (P, 350 µmol mol–1)atmospheric CO2 concentration and at an elevated (E, 700 µmolmol–1) CO2 concentration, and at low (L, without additionalnutrient solution) and high (H, with additional nutrient solution)nutrient supply for 28 d The effects of CO2 and nutrient availabilitywere examined on growth, morphological and biochemical characteristics Leaf area and dry mass were significantly increased by CO2 enrichmentand by high nutrient supply Stomatal density, stomatal indexand epidermal cell density were not affected by elevated CO2concentration or by nutrient supply Leaf thickness respondedpositively to CO2 increasing particularly in mesophyll areaas a result of cell enlargement Intercellular air spaces inthe mesophyll decreased slightly in plants grown in elevatedCO2 Leaf chlorophyll content per unit area or dry mass was significantlylower in elevated CO2 grown plants and increased significantlywith increasing nutrient availability The content of reducingcarbohydrates of leaves, stem, and roots was not affected byCO2 but was significantly increased by nutrient addition inall plant parts Starch content in leaves and stem was significantlyincreased by elevated CO2 concentration and by high nutrientsupply Phaseolus vulgaris, elevated atmospheric CO2, CO2-nutrient interaction, stomatal density, leaf anatomy, chlorophyll, carbohydrates, starch  相似文献

The effects of growth at elevated CO2 on the response to hightemperatures in terms of carbon assimilation (net photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, amount and activity of Rubisco, and concentrationsof total soluble sugars and starch) and of photochemistry (forexample, the efficiency of excitation energy captured by openphotosystem II reaction centres) were studied in cork oak (Quercussuber L.). Plants grown in elevated CO2 (700 ppm) showed a down-regulationof photosynthesis and had lower amounts and activity of Rubiscothan plants grown at ambient CO2 (350 ppm), after 14 monthsin the greenhouse. At that time plants were subjected to a heat-shocktreatment (4 h at 45C in a chamber with 80% relative humidityand 800–1000 mol m–2 s–1 photon flux density).Growth in a CO2-enriched atmosphere seems to protect cork oakleaves from the short-term effects of high temperature. ElevatedCO2 plants had positive net carbon uptake rates during the heatshock treatment whereas plants grown at ambient CO2 showed negativerates. Moreover, recovery was faster in high CO2-grown plantswhich, after 30 min at 25C, exhibited higher net carbon uptakerates and lower decreases in photosynthetic capacity (Amax aswell as in the efficiency of excitation energy captured by openphotosystem II reaction centres (FvJFm than plants grown atambient CO2. The stomata of elevated CO2 plants were also lessresponsive when exposed to high temperature. Key words: Elevated CO2, temperature, acclimation, photosynthesis, Quercus suber L.  相似文献

To test whether stomatal density measurements on oak leaf remainsare reliable tools for assessing palaeoatmospheric carbon dioxideconcentration [CO2], under changing Late Miocene palaeoenvironmentalconditions, young seedings of oak (Quercus petraea,Liebl.) weregrown at elevatedvs.ambient atmospheric [CO2] and at high humiditycombined with an increased air temperature. The leaf anatomyof the young oaks was compared with that of fossil leaves ofthe same species. In the experiments, stomatal density and stomatalindex were significantly decreased at elevated [CO2] in comparisonto ambient [CO2]. Elevated [CO2] induced leaf cell expansionand reduced the intercellular air space by 35%. Leaf cell sizeor length were also stimulated at high air humidity and temperature.Regardless of a temperate or subtropical palaeoclimate, leafcell size in fossil oak was not enhanced, since neither epidermalcell density nor length of the stomatal apparatus changed. Theabsence of these effects may be attributed to the phenologicalresponse of trees to climatic changes that balanced temporalchanges in environmental variables to maintain leaf growth underoptimal and stable conditions.Quercus petraea, which evolvedunder recurring depletions in the palaeoatmospheric [CO2], maypossess sufficient phenotypic plasticity to alter stomatal frequencyin hypostomatous leaves allowing high maximum stomatal conductanceand high assimilation rates during these phases of low [CO2].Copyright1998 Annals of Botany Company Atmospheric CO2, high humidity, elevated temperature,Quercus petraea, durmast oak, Late Miocene, palaeoclimates, leaf anatomy, stomatal density, stomatal index  相似文献

Agrostis capillaris L.5, Festuca vivipara L. and Poaalpina L.were grown in outdoor open-top chambers at either ambient (340 3µmol mol–1) or elevated (6804µmol mol–1)concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) for periodsfrom 79–189 d. Photosynthetic capacity of source leaves of plants grown atboth ambient and elevated CO2 concentrations was measured atsaturating light and 5% CO2. Dark respiration of leaves wasmeasured using a liquid phase oxygen electrode with the buffersolution in equilibrium with air (21% O2, 0.034% CO2). Photo-syntheticcapacity of P. alpina was reduced by growth at 680 µmolmol–1 CO2 by 105 d, and that of F. vivipara was reducedat 65 d and 189 d after CO2 enrichment began, suggesting down-regulationor acclimation. Dark respiration of successive leaf blades ofall three species was unaltered by growth at 680 relative to340 µmol mol–1 CO2. In F. vivipara, leaf respirationrate was markedly lower at 189 d than at either 0 d or 65 d,irrespective of growth CO2 concentration. There was a significantlylower total non-structural carbohydrate (TNC) concentrationin the leaf blades and leaf sheaths of A. capillaris grown at680µmol mol–1 CO2. TNC of roots of A. capillariswas unaltered by CO2 treatment. TNC concentration was increasedin both leaves and sheaths of P. alpina and F. vivipara after105 d and 65 d growth, respectively. A 4-fold increase in thewater-soluble fraction (fructan) in P. alpina and in all carbohydratefractions in F. vivipara accounted for the increased TNC content. In F. vivipara the relationship between leaf photosyn-theticcapacity and leaf carbohydrate concentration was such that therewas a strong positive correlation between photosynthetic capacityand total leaf N concentration (expressed on a per unit structuraldry weight basis), and total nitrogen concentration of successivemature leaves reduced with time. Multiple regression of leafphotosynthetic capacity upon leaf nitrogen and carbohydrateconcentrations further confirmed that leaf photosynthetic capacitywas mainly determined by leaf N concentration. In P. alpina, leaf photosynthetic capacity was mainly determined by leaf CHOconcentration. Thus there is evidence for down-regulation ofphotosynthetic capacity in P. alpina resulting from increasedcarbohydrate accumulation in source leaves. Leaf dark respiration and total N concentration were positivelycorrelated in P. alpina and F. vivipara. Leaf dark respirationand soluble carbohydrate concentration of source leaves werepositively correlated in A. capillaris. Changes in source leafphotosynthetic capacity and carbohydrate concentration of plantsgrown at ambient or elevated CO2 are discussed in relation toplant growth, nutrient relations and availability of sinks forcarbon. Pascopyrum smithii (C3) andBouteloua gracilis (C4) are importantforage grasses native to the Colorado shortgrass steppe. Thisstudy investigated photosynthetic responses of these grassesto long-term CO2enrichment and temperature in relation to leafnonstructural carbohydrate (TNC) and [N]. Glasshouse-grown seedlingswere transferred to growth chambers and grown for 49 d at twoCO2concentrations (380 and 750 µmol mol-1) at 20 and 35°C, and two additional temperatures (25 and 30 °C) at750 µmol mol-1CO2. Leaf CO2exchange rate (CER) was measuredat a plant's respective growth temperature and at two CO2concentrationsof approx. 380 and 700 µmol mol-1. Long-term CO2enrichmentstimulated CER in both species, although the response was greaterin the C3,P. smithii . Doubling the [CO2] from 380 to 750 µmolmol-1stimulated CER ofP. smithii slightly more in plants grownand measured at 30 °C compared to plants grown at 20, 25or 35 °C. CO2-enriched plants sometimes exhibited lowerCER when compared to ambient-grown controls measured at thesame [CO2], indicating photosynthetic acclimation to CO2growthregime. InP. smithii , such reductions in CER were associatedwith increases in TNC and specific leaf mass, reductions inleaf [N] and, in one instance, a reduction in leaf conductancecompared to controls. InB. gracilis , photosynthetic acclimationwas observed more often, but significant changes in leaf metabolitelevels from growth at different [CO2] were generally less evident.Temperatures considered optimal for growth (C3: 20 °C; C4:35 °C) sometimes led to CO2-induced accumulations of TNCin both species, with starch accumulating in the leaves of bothspecies, and fructans accumulating only inP. smithii. Photosynthesisof both species is likely to be enhanced in future CO2-enrichedand warmer environments, although responses will sometimes beattenuated by acclimation. Indirect effects of atmospheric CO2 concentration [CO2], onlongleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.) foliage respiration werestudied by growing trees in a factorial arrangement of low andhigh [CO2] (369 and 729µmol CO2 mol–1) and low andhigh N (40 and 400 kg ha–1 yr–1). Direct effectsof [CO2] on leaf respiration were tested by measuring respirationrates of foliage from all treatments at two CO2 levels (360and 720µmol CO2mol–1) at the time of measurement.Elevated CO2 did not directly or indirectly affect leaf respirationwhen expressed on a leaf area or mass basis, but a significantincrease in respiration per unit leaf N was observed in treesgrown in elevated [CO2] (indirect response to elevated [CO2]).The lack of a [CO2] effect on respiration, when analysed onan area or mass basis, may have resulted from combined effectsof [CO2] on factors that increase respiration (e.g. greateravailability of non-structural carbohydrates stimulating growthand carbon export from leaves) and on factors that decreaserespiration (e.g. lower N concentration leading to lower constructioncosts and maintenance requirements). Thus, [CO2] affected factorsthat influence respiration, but in opposing ways. Key words: Pinus palustris, elevated CO2, nitrogen, foliar, respiration  相似文献

Single, seed-grown plants of ryegrass (Lolium perenne L. cv.Melle) were grown for 49 d from the early seedling stage ingrowth cabinets at a day/night temperature of 20/15 C, witha 12 h photoperiod, and a CO2 concentration of either 340 or680µI 1–1 CO2. Following complete acclimation tothe environmental regimes, leaf and whole plant CO2 effluxesand influxes were measured using infra-red gas analysis techniques.Elevated CO2 increased rates of photosynthesis of young, fullyexpanded leaves by 35–46% and of whole plants by morethan 50%. For both leaves and whole plants acclimation to 680µI–1 CO2 reduced rates of photosynthesis in bothCO2 regimes, compared with plants acclimated to 340µll–1. There was no significant effect of CO2 regime onrespiration rates of either leaves or whole plants, althoughleaves developed in elevated CO2 exhibited generally lower ratesthan those developed in 340µI I–1 CO2. Initially the seedling plants in elevated CO2 grew faster thantheir counterparts in 340µI I–1 CO2, but this effectquickly petered out and final plant weights differed by onlyc. 10%. Since the total area of expanded and unexpanded laminaewas unaffected by CO2 regime, specific leaf area was persistently13–40% lower in elevated CO2 while, similarly, root/shootratio was also reduced throughout the experiment. Elevated CO2reduced tissue nitrogen contents of expanded leaves, but hadno effect on the nitrogen contents of unexpanded leaves, sheathsor roots. The lack of a pronounced effect of elevated CO2 on plant growthwas primarily due to the fact that CO2 concentration did notinfluence tiller (branch) numbers. In the absence of an effecton tiller numbers, any possible weight increment was restrictedto the c. 2.5 leaves of each tiller. The reason for the lackof an effect on tillering is not known. Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) seedlings were grown for 3years in the ground in open top chambers and exposed to twoconcentrations of atmospheric CO2(ambient or ambient + 400 µmol mol-1) without addition of nutrients and water. Biomassproduction (above-ground and below-ground) and allocation, aswell as canopy structure and tissue nitrogen concentrationsand contents, were examined by destructive harvest after 3 years.Elevated CO2increased total biomass production by 55%, reducedneedle area and needle mass as indicated, respectively, by lowerleaf area ratio and leaf mass ratio. A relatively smaller totalneedle area was produced in relation to fine roots under elevatedCO2. The proportion of dry matter in roots was increased byelevated CO2, as indicated by increased root-to-shoot ratioand root mass ratio. Within the root system, there was a significantshift in the allocation towards fine roots. Root litter constituteda much higher fraction of fine roots in trees grown in the elevatedCO2than in those grown in ambient CO2. Growth at elevated CO2causeda significant decline in nitrogen concentration only in theneedles, while nitrogen content significantly increased in branchesand fine roots (with diameter less than 1 mm). There were nochanges in crown structure (branch number and needle area distribution).Based upon measurements of growth made throughout the 3 years, the greatest increase in biomass under elevated CO2took placemainly at the beginning of the experiment, when trees grownin elevated CO2had higher relative growth rates than those grownunder ambient CO2; these differences disappeared with time.Symptoms of acclimation of trees to growth in the elevated CO2treatmentwere observed and are discussed. 15N2 studies and acetylene reduction assays of leaves and shootsof Douglas fir and other forest trees do not confirm previousreports that extensive nitrogen fixation occurs on leaf surfacesand it is concluded that the importance of nitrogen fixationin the canopy of forest trees has been exaggerated. The presenceof nitrogen-fixing bacteria on the leaves of trees is confirmed, however, and they have been identified as Enterobacter agglomerans,Clostridium butyricum and Bacillus sp. Their distribution onleaves is fortuitous since dead oak leaves and artificial leavesbecome colonized to the same extent as living oak leaves. nitrogen fixation, acetylene reduction, Enterobacter agglomerans, Clostridium butyricum, Bacillus sp, Douglas fir, Pseudotsuga menziensii, larch, Larix x oak, Quercus petraea.  相似文献

Microswards of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) were grownin controlled environments at 10/7, 18/13 and 26/21 °C day/nighttemperatures. The vertical distribution of leaves of differentages and their rates of 14CO2-uptake in situ were studied. Extending petioles carried the laminae of young leaves throughthe existing foliage. A final position was reached within 1/4to 1/3 of the time between unfolding and death. Newly unfoldedleaves had higher rates of 14CO2-uptake per leaf area than olderones at the same height in the canopy. At higher temperatures, the decrease with age was faster. However, the light-photosynthesisresponse of leaves which were removed from different heightsin the canopy varied much less with leaf age than did the ratesof 14CO2-uptake in situ. The comparison of the rates of 14CO2-uptake in situ with thelight-photosynthesis response curves suggests that young leavesreceive more light than older ones at the same height in thecanopy. This would imply that young white clover leaves havethe ability to reach canopy positions having a favourable lightenvironment. This ability may improve the chances of survivalof white clover in competition with other species. Upland grasslands are a major component of natural vegetationwithin the UK. Such grasslands support slow growing relativelystable plant communities. The response of native montane grassspecies to elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrationshas received little attention to date. Of such studies, mosthave only focused on short-term (days to weeks) responses, oftenunder favourable controlled environment conditions. In thisstudy Agrostis caplllaris L.5, Festuca vivipara L. and Poa alpinaL. were grown under semi-natural conditions in outdoor open-topchambers at either ambient (340µmol mol–1) or elevated(680µmol mol–1) concentrations of atmospheric carbondioxide (CO2 for periods from 79 to 189 d, with a nutrient availabilitysimilar to that of montane Agrostis-Fescue grassland in Snowdonia,N. Wales. Whole plant dry weight was increased for A. capillarisand P. alpina, but decreased for F. vivipara, at elevated CO2.Major components of relative growth rate (RGR) contributingto this change at elevated CO2 were transient changes in specificleaf area (SLA) and leaf area ratio (LAR). Despite changes ingrowth rate at 680 µmol mol–1 CO2, partitioningof dry weight between shoot and root in plants of A. capillarisand P. alpina was unaltered. There was a significant decreasein shoot relative to root growth at elevated CO2 in F. viviparawhich also showed marked discoloration of the leaves and increasedsenescence of the foliage. Single clonal plants of white clover (Trifolium repens L) grownfrom explants in a Perlite rooting medium, and dependent fornitrogen on N2 fixation in root nodules, were grown for severalweeks in controlled environments which provided two regimesof CO2, and temperature 23/18 °C day/night temperaturesat 680 µmol mol–1 CO2, (C680), and 20/15 °Cday/night temperatures at 340 µmol mol–1 CO2 (C340)After 3–4 weeks of growth, when the plants were acclimatedto the environmental regimes, leaf and whole-plant photosynthesisand respiration were measured using conventional infra-red gasanalysis techniques Elevated CO2 and temperature increased ratesof photosynthesis of young, fully expanded leaves at the growthirradiance by 17–29%, despite decreased stomatal conductancesand transpiration rates Water use efficiency (mol CO2 mol H2O–1)was also significantly increased Plants acclimated to elevatedCO2, and temperature exhibited rates of leaf photosynthesisvery similar to those of C340 leaves ‘instantaneously’exposed to the C680 regime However, leaves developed in theC680 regime photosynthesised less rapidly than C340 leaves whenboth were exposed to a normal CO2, and temperature environmentIn measurements where irradiance was varied, the enhancementof photosynthesis in elevated CO2 at 23 °C increased graduallyfrom approx 10 % at 100 µmol m–1 s–1 to >27 % at 1170 µmol m–2 s–1 In parallel, wateruse efficiency increased by 20–40 % at 315 µmolm–2 s–1 In parallel, water use efficiency increasedby 20–40 % at 315 µmol m–2 s–1 In parallel, water use efficiency increased by 20–40 % at 315 µmolm–2 s–1 In parallel, water use efficiency increasedby 20–40 % at 315 µmol m–2 s–1 to approx100 % at the highest irradiance Elevated CO2, and temperatureincreased whole-plant photosynthesis by > 40 %, when expressedin terms of shoot surface area or shoot weight No effects ofelevated CO2 and temperature on rate of tissue respiration, either during growth or measurement, were established for singleleaves or for whole plants Dependence on N2, fixation in rootnodules appeared to have no detrimental effect on photosyntheticperformance in elevated CO2, and temperature Trifolium repens, white clover, photosynthesis, respiration, elevated CO2, elevated temperature, water use efficiency, N2 fixation  相似文献

Seedlings of Maranthes corymbosa (Blume) and Eucalyptus tetrodonta(F. Muell) were grown with or without CO2 enrichment (700µmolCO2 mol–1 The response of stomatal conductance (g2) toleaf drying, exogenous absclslc acid and calcium ions was investigatedin M. corymbosa. Reciprocal transfer experiments were also conductedwhereby plants were grown in one treatment and then transferredto the other before g, was measured. Stomatal conductance in M. corymbosa was more sensitive (a greaterpercentage decline in g2 per unit percentage decline in leaffresh weight) to leaf water status under conditions of CO2 enrichmentcompared to ambient conditions. However, the rate of reductionof g2 in response to exogenous abscisic acid was not influencedby CO2 treatment. In contrast, the rate of reduction of g2,in response to exogenous CaCl2 was decreased under conditionsof CO2 enrichment. Reciprocal transfer experiments showed that expo sure to CO2enrichment results in a short-term, reversible decline in g2,as a result of decreased stomatal aperture and a long-term,irreversible decline in g2 as a result of a decreased stomataldensity. Seedlings of E. tetrodonta were used to investigate the responseof g2 to light flux density, leaf-to-air vapour pressure difference(LAVPD), leaf internal CO2 concentration (C1 and temperature.Reciprocal transfer experiments were also conducted. CO2 enrichmentdid not influence the pattern or sensitivity of response ofg to LAVPD and C in E. tetrodonta. In contrast, the slope ofthe response of g2, to temperature decreased for trees grownunder elevated [CO2]a conditions and the equilibrium g2 attainedat saturating light was also decreased for plants grown underelevated [CO2a. conditions. Two common tallgrass prairie species, Andropogon gerardii, thedominant C4 grass in this North American grassland, and Salviapitcheri, a C3 forb, were exposed to ambient and elevated (twiceambient) CO2 within open-top chambers throughout the 1993 growingseason. After full canopy development, stomatal density on abaxialand adaxial surfaces, guard cell length and specific leaf mass(SLM; mg cm-2) were determined for plants in the chambers aswell as in adjacent unchambered plots. Record high rainfallamounts during the 1993 growing season minimized water stressin these plants (leaf xylem pressure potential was usually >-1·5 MPa in A. gerardii) and also minimized differencesin water status among treatments. In A. gerardii, stomatal densitywas significantly higher (190 ± 7 mm-2; mean ±s.e.) in plants grown outside of the chambers compared to plantsthat developed inside the ambient CO2 chambers (161 ±5 mm-2). Thus, there was a significant 'chamber effect' on stomataldensity. At elevated levels of CO2, stomatal density was evenlower (P < 0·05; 121 ± 5 mm-2). Most stomatawere on abaxial leaf surfaces in this grass, but the ratio ofadaxial to abaxial stomatal density was greater at elevatedlevels of CO2. In S. pitcheri, stomatal density was also significantlylower when plants were grown in the open-top chambers (235 ±10 mm-2 outside vs. 140 ± 6 mm-2 in the ambient CO2 chamber). However, stomatal density was greater at elevated CO2 (218 ±12 mm-2) compared to plants from the ambient CO2 chamber. Theratio of stomata on adaxial vs. abaxial surfaces did not varysignificantly in this herb. Guard cell lengths were not significantlyaffected by growth in the chambers or by elevated CO2 for eitherspecies. Growth within the chambers resulted in lower SLM inS. pitcheri, but CO2 concentration had no effect. In A. gerardii,SLM was lower at elevated CO2. These results indicate that stomataland leaf responses to elevated CO2 are species specific, andreinforce the need to assess chamber effects along with treatmenteffects (CO2) when using open-top chambers.Copyright 1994, 1999Academic Press Andropogon gerardii, elevated CO2, Salvia pitcheri, stomatal density, tallgrass prairie  相似文献

Stomatal Responses of Variegated Leaves to CO2 Enrichment   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The responses of stomatal density and stomatal index of fivespecies of ornamental plants with variegated leaves grown attwo mole fractions of atmospheric CO2 (350 and 700 µmolmol-1) were measured. The use of variegated leaves allowed anypotential effects of mesophyll photosynthetic capacity to beuncoupled from the responses of stomatal density to changesin atmospheric CO2 concentration. There was a decrease in stomataldensity and stomatal index with CO2 enrichment on both white(unpigmented) and green (pigmented) leaf areas. A similar responseof stomatal density and index was also observed on areas ofleaves with pigmentation other than green indicating that anydifferences in metabolic processes associated with colouredleaves are not influencing the responses of stomatal densityto CO2 concentrations. Therefore the carboxylation capacityof mesophyll tissue has no direct influence on stomatal densityand index responses as suggested previously (Friend and Woodward1990 Advances in Ecological Research 20: 59-124), instead theresponses were related to leaf structure. The stomatal characteristics(density and index) of homobaric variegated leaves showed agreater sensitivity to CO2 on green portions, whereas heterobaricleaves showed a greater sensitivity on white areas. These resultsprovide evidence that leaf structure may play an important rolein determining the magnitude of stomatal density and index responsesto CO2 concentrations.Copyright 1995, 1999 Academic Press Leaf structure, photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, CO2, stomatal density, stomatal index  相似文献
