Predicted fitness consequences of threat-sensitive hiding behavior   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In studies of refuge use as a form of antipredator behavior, where prey hide in response to a predator's approach, factorssuch as foraging costs and the perceived risk in a predator'sapproach have been shown to influence the hiding behavior ofprey. Because few studies of waiting games have focused on mammals,we studied the hiding behavior of the yellow-bellied marmot(Marmota flaviventris), a ground-dwelling rodent. We testedthe prediction that marmots vary hiding time as a function ofpredator approach speed and presence and absence of food outsidetheir refuge and that marmots hide differently depending ontheir relative condition. We conducted "fast approaches" and"slow approaches" in the presence and absence of extra foodand evaluated hiding times. Multiple regression analyses demonstratedthat the interaction between the approach speed and the presenceand absence of food influenced hiding behavior; body conditionhad a smaller, but nonsignificant effect. We then developeda state-dependent dynamic model to explore potential fitnessconsequences of these decisions. The model suggested that theoverall survival of a population is substantially reduced whenindividuals make suboptimal decisions. Our research builds onprevious studies, indicating that animals integrate both costsand benefits of hiding when determining their hiding times.  相似文献

Summary The amount and distribution of the lysosomal enzyme acid phosphatase in light- and dark-adapted eyes of the brackish-water annelid Nereis limnicola were studied by standard cytochemical techniques. Precipitate from the acid phosphatase reaction was observed in Golgi-endoplasmic reticulum-lysosomal complexes, primary lysosomes, and secondary lysosomes, formed by fusion of primary lysosomes with phagocytic and pinocytic vesicles containing products of presumed rhabdomeric degradation. The acid phosphatase reaction occurred in these organelles in both sensory and supportive cells of both light- and darkadapted ocelli. Secondary lysosomes were more abundant in sensory cells of illuminated ocelli than in those maintained in the dark. Sparse reaction product was found in Golgi cisternae, none in rough endoplasmic reticulum. We suggest that the increase of lysosomal activity in light-adapted eyes is correlated with the breakdown of photosensory microvilli upon exposure to light. A diagram of our interpretation of recycling of photoreceptoral membrane in N. limnicola is presented.  相似文献

Many birds use regulated drops in night-time body temperature (Tb) to conserve energy critical to winter survival. However, a significant degree of hypothermia may limit a bird''s ability to respond to predatory attack. Despite this likely energy–predation trade-off, the behavioural costs of avian hypothermia have yet to be examined. We thus monitored the nocturnal hypothermia of mourning doves (Zenaida macroura) in a laboratory setting in response to food deprivation. Nocturnal flight tests were used to quantify the flight ability of hypothermic doves. Many hypothermic doves (39% of tests) could not fly while carrying a small weight, but could do so after quickly warming up to typical daytime Tb. Doves that were unable to fly during their first test were more hypothermic than those that could fly, with average Tb reductions of 5.3°C and 3.3°C, respectively, but there was no overall indication of a threshold Tb reduction beyond which doves were consistently incapable of flight. These results suggest that energy-saving hypothermia interferes with avian antipredator behaviour via a reduction in flight ability, likely leading to a trade-off between energy-saving hypothermia and the risk of predation.  相似文献

Foraging theory predicts that breath-hold divers adjust the time spent foraging at depth relative to the energetic cost of swimming, which varies with buoyancy (body density). However, the buoyancy of diving animals varies as a function of their body condition, and the effects of these changes on swimming costs and foraging behaviour have been poorly examined. A novel animal-borne accelerometer was developed that recorded the number of flipper strokes, which allowed us to monitor the number of strokes per metre swam (hereafter, referred to as strokes-per-metre) by female northern elephant seals over their months-long, oceanic foraging migrations. As negatively buoyant seals increased their fat stores and buoyancy, the strokes-per-metre increased slightly in the buoyancy-aided direction (descending), but decreased significantly in the buoyancy-hindered direction (ascending), with associated changes in swim speed and gliding duration. Overall, the round-trip strokes-per-metre decreased and reached a minimum value when seals achieved neutral buoyancy. Consistent with foraging theory, seals stayed longer at foraging depths when their round-trip strokes-per-metre was less. Therefore, neutrally buoyant divers gained an energetic advantage via reduced swimming costs, which resulted in an increase in time spent foraging at depth, suggesting a foraging benefit of being fat.  相似文献

Many prey respond to the presence of a predator by retreatinginto a shell or burrow, or by taking refuge in some other waythat guarantees their safety but restricts further informationfrom being obtained about the predator's continued presence. When this occurs, the individual predator and prey involvedbecome opponents in a "waiting game." The prey must decide howlong to wait for the predator to depart before re-emerging andpotentially exposing itself to attack. The predator must decidehow long to wait for the prey to re-emerge before departingin search of other foraging opportunities. I use a numericalapproach to determine the evolutionarily stable waiting strategyof both players and examine the effects of various parameterson the ESS. The model predicts that each player's waiting distribution—thedistribution of waiting times one would expect to observe forindividuals in that role—will have a characteristic shape:the predator's distribution should resemble a negative exponentialfunction, whereas the waiting time of the prey is predictedto be more variable and follow a positively skewed distribution. The model also predicts that very little overlap will occurbetween the players' waiting distributions, and that the predatorwill rarely outwait the prey. Empirical studies relating tothe model and comparisons between the waiting game and the asymmetricwar of attrition are discussed.  相似文献

Coral reefs are currently experiencing a number of worsening anthropogenic stressors, with nearshore reefs suffering from increasing sedimentation because of growing human populations and development in coastal regions. In habitats where vision and olfaction serve as the primary sources of information, reduced visual input from suspended sediment may lead to significant alterations in prey fish behaviour. Here, we test whether prey compensate for reduced visual information by increasing their antipredator responses to chemically mediated risk cues in turbid conditions. Experiments with the spiny damselfish, Acanthochromis polyacanthus, found that baseline activity levels were reduced by 23 per cent in high turbidity conditions relative to low turbidity conditions. Furthermore, risk cues elicited strong antipredator responses at all turbidity levels; the strongest antipredator responses were observed in high turbidity conditions, with fish reducing their foraging by almost 40 per cent, as compared with 17 per cent for fish in clear conditions. This provides unambiguous evidence of sensory compensation in a predation context for a tropical marine fish, and suggests that prey fish may be able to behaviourally offset some of the fitness reductions resulting from anthropogenic sedimentation of their habitats.  相似文献

Polarized oogenic cysts are clonal syncytia of germ cells in which some of the sister cells (cystocytes) differentiate not as oocytes, but instead as nurse cells: polyploid cells that support oocyte development. The intricate machinery required to establish and maintain divergent cell fates within a syncytium, and the importance of associated oocyte patterning for subsequent embryonic development, have made polarized cysts valuable subjects of study in developmental and cell biology. Nurse cell/oocyte specification is best understood in insects, particularly Drosophila melanogaster. However, polarized cysts have evolved independently in several other animal phyla. We describe the differentiation of female cystocytes in an annelid worm, the polychaete Ophryotrocha labronica. These worms are remarkable for their elegantly simple cysts, which comprise a single oocyte and nurse cell, making them an appealing complement to insects as subjects of study. To elucidate the process of cystocyte differentiation in O. labronica, we have constructed digital 3D models from electron micrographs of serially sectioned ovarian tissue. These models show that 2-cell cysts arise by fragmentation of larger “parental” cysts, rather than as independent units. The parental cysts vary in size and organization, are produced by asynchronous, indeterminate mitotic divisions of progenitor cystoblasts, and lack fusome-like organizing organelles. All of these characteristics represent key cytological differences from “typical” cyst development in insects like D. melanogaster. In light of such differences and the plasticity of female cyst structure among other animals, we suggest that it is time to reassess common views on the conservation of oogenic cysts and the importance of cysts in animal oogenesis generally.  相似文献

A higher degree of spatial egg aggregation is often observed in environments where resource patches are more sparsely distributed. This suggests a higher probability of species coexistence when resource distribution is sparse. However, it is still unclear how the degree of spatial egg aggregation increases. I propose a model to explain this phenomenon, which assumes that (i) egg load (the number of mature eggs in ovaries) increases in the travel period between resource patches and (ii) the retention of eggs in the ovaries is harmful (egg load pressure). With these assumptions, a female would lay accumulated eggs on arrival at a new resource patch, resulting in a higher degree of spatial egg aggregation. Laboratory experiments with three drosophilid species, Drosophila simulans Surtevant, Drosophila auraria Peng, and Drosophila immigrans Sturtevant, support the model. This study provides evidence that host availability affects the spatial egg aggregation via egg load.  相似文献
