Abstract. 1. Although the majority of lycaenid–ant associations is facultative, few studies have documented the protection benefits provided by ants to lycaenids that are tended facultatively (Pierce & Easteal, 1986; Peterson, 1993).
2. Larvae of Hemiargus isola (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae) feeding on Dalea albiflora are tended facultatively by several species of ant. In 1999 and 2000, the levels of parasitism and the identities of attendant ants were determined for larvae of H. isola . In addition, the presence of ants was manipulated experimentally to determine the efficacy of protection provided by attendant ants to H. isola .
3. Lycaenids were parasitised by a braconid wasp, Cotesia cyaniridis (Riley), and a tachinid fly, Aplomya theclarum (Scudder). In 1999 and 2000, 62 and 65% of larvae were parasitised; the percentage of the population parasitised did not differ significantly between years. In both 1999 and 2000, parasitism by the braconid wasp C. cyaniridis accounted for > 99% of all parasitism events.
4. Four species of ant, Crematogaster sp., Dorymyrmex sp., Forelius sp., and Formica sp., were associated with 88–99% of the tended lycaenids collected in both 1999 and 2000. For both years, there was a single, numerically dominant species associated with >80% of the tended larvae collected, but the identity of this numerically dominant ant differed between years.
5. Experimental exclusion of ants from D. albiflora plants resulted in 78% larval mortality as a result of parasitism, nearly twice that of larvae that were tended by ants on unmanipulated plants.  相似文献

Coccinella magnifica is an obligate associate of Formica rufa-group ants. The congener Coccinella septempunctata can serve as a model for its nonmyrmecophilous ancestor. Formica rufa behavior toward these two ladybirds, and their behavior, was compared. Although C. magnifica was rarely attacked on ant trails, it was usually attacked on tended aphid colonies. Coccinella septempunctata was more readily attacked. The two ladybirds' behavior was similar on trails, but C. magnifica used more defense and C. septempunctata more rapid escape behavior on aphid colonies. Only C. magnifica fed upon tended aphids. Chemical adaptation to overcome ant aggression probably exists in C. magnifica, but it possesses almost no novel behaviors to counter ant aggression. Instead, modifications have occurred in the expression of behaviors present in C. septempunctata.  相似文献

Abstract.  In some parasitoid species, the serosa membrane breaks apart at hatching and produces teratocyte cells that assume various functions (immunossupression, secretion and nutrition) mediating host–parasitoid relationships. Teratocyte growth pattern may thus reflect the host suitability for a parasitoid. The teratocyte growth pattern (increase in size and number of teratocytes as a function of time) is studied and used as an indirect measure of fitness to compare the development of the endoparasitoid Dinocampus coccinellae in a marginal host, the coccinellid Harmonia axyridis , and in a suitable host, Coleomegilla maculata . Indirect measures of fitness recorded in both host species confirm that C. maculata is a suitable host for D. coccinellae contrary to the marginal host H. axyridis. According to regression analysis, teratocyte numbers decrease linearly whereas teratocyte size increases linearly with time in the suitable host C. maculata (larvae or adults). In the marginal host, parasitism occurs only in the larval stage where a delay in the parasitoid larval development is observed. Increase in teratocyte size is also highly variable. The teratocyte growth pattern of the parasitoid in the marginal host does not follow the linear model found in the suitable host. Teratocyte growth pattern may be a useful criterion to evaluate host-suitability and host range of parasitoids.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Two experiments were performed in the laboratory to assess the behaviour of dropping from a host plant as a defence against intraguild predation in aphidophagous ladybird larvae.
2. In the first experiment, encounters were observed on bean plants between fourth instars of the intraguild predator species, Harmonia axyridis , and first instars of two other ladybird species, Adalia bipunctata (L.) and Coccinella septempunctata (L.). The percentages of first instars of the latter two species that dropped from the plant in response to attack differed dramatically, with 47.5% of C. septempunctata first instars dropping vs. 0% of A. bipunctata .
3. In the second experiment, first instars of A. bipunctata or C. septempunctata and a fourth instar of H. axyridis were allowed to forage together on bean plants for 3 h. During this time, 44.3% of C. septempunctata larvae dropped from the plant, but less than 2% of A. bipunctata larvae did so. In contrast, 95.0% of A. bipunctata larvae fell victim to intraguild predation by H. axyridis vs. only 54.5% of C. septempunctata larvae.
4. The significance of dropping behaviour of ladybird larvae as a defence against intraguild predation, and the relationship of dropping behaviour to species-specific habitat affinity of ladybirds, is discussed.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Theoretical models predict that ovipositional decisions of parasitoid females should lead to the selection of the most profitable host for parasitoid development. Most parasitoid species have evolved specific adaptations to exploit a single host stage. However, females of the aphid hyperparasitoid Syrphophagous aphidivorus (Mayr) (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) display a unique and atypical oviposition behaviour by attacking either primary parasitoid larvae in live aphids, or parasitoid pupae in dead, mummified aphids.
2. In the laboratory, the correlation between host suitability and host preference of S. aphidivorus on the host Aphidius nigripes Ashmead parasitising the aphid Macrosiphum euphorbiae (Thomas) was investigated.
3. The relative suitability of the two host stages was determined by measuring hyperparasitoid fitness parameters (survival, development time, fecundity, sex ratio, and adult size of progeny), and calculating the intrinsic rate of population increase ( r m). Host preference by S. aphidivorus females and the influence of aphid defence behaviour on host selection was also examined.
4. Hyperparasitoid offspring performance was highest when developing from hosts in aphid mummies and females consistently preferred this host to hosts in parasitised aphids. Although aphid defensive behaviour may influence host selection, it was not a determining factor. Ecological and evolutionary processes that might have led to dual oviposition behaviour in S. aphidivorus are discussed.  相似文献

Teratocytes derived from the embryonic membrane (serosa) of parasitoids are released into the host hemocoel when the parasitoid eggs hatch, where they perform several functions during the post-embryonic stage. A full-length cDNA encoding a putative carboxylesterase was isolated from the teratocytes of Dinocampus coccinellae and was designated as teratocyte-specific carboxylesterase (TSC). It contained an open reading frame of 2571 bp coding for a protein of 857 amino acids with a calculated molecular mass of 89 kDa. The deduced amino acid sequence had many structural features that are highly conserved among serine hydrolases including Ser, Glu and His as a catalytic triad, carboxylesterase type-B (FGGNPNSVTLLGYSAG)/ lipase-serine (VTLLGYSAGA) active sites, and six N-glycosylation sites. Interestingly, the mRNA encoding the TSC gene was expressed exclusively in teratocytes but not in the parasitoid larva or in the non-parasitized host. Most notably, the TSC protein was distinguished by an insertion of 294 amino acids towards the N-terminal region and was flanked by carboxylesterase domains. Furthermore, sequence alignment and homology search revealed these additional amino acids to be unique to TSC and the insertion contributed significantly to its molecular mass resulting in a larger protein than other esterases. In addition to sequence analysis, the possible role of TSC in relation to the host (Coccinella septempunctata) and parasitoid (D. coccinellae) system is discussed.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Why some exotic species invade successfully while others do not is poorly understood. This study focuses on the inability of the exotic predatory ladybird Adalia bipunctata (L.) (Coleoptera, Coccinellidae) to establish and spread in Japan. In particular, this study considers the interactions between A. bipunctata and three native Japanese ladybird species, Harmonia axyridis Pallas, Coccinella septempunctata Linn., and Propylea japonica Mulsant.
2. The number of aphids occurring on the host plants declined dramatically over the course of larval development in the presence of H. axyridis or C. septempunctata . In contrast, many aphids remained at the end of the experiment when only A. bipunctata or P. japonica was present.
3. The survivorship of A. bipunctata from second instar to adult was significantly reduced in the presence of H. axyridis , but not in the presence of C. septempunctata or P. japonica . Most deaths were the result of intra-guild predation when H. axyridis or C. septempunctata larvae were present. Larvae of H. axyridis and C. septempunctata suffered very high mortality in this experiment, but survived better when co-occurring with A. bipunctata than when occurring only with conspecifics. In contrast, P. japonica survived better when occurring with conspecifics than with A. bipunctata .
4. The finding that larvae of the exotic species A. bipunctata died at high rates from intra-guild predation by the native Japanese ladybirds H. axyridis and C. septempunctata may bear on the question of why A. bipunctata has not established more successfully in Japan whereas H. axyridis and C. septempunctata have been very successful in establishing themselves in North America.  相似文献

Abstract 1. Over 3400 larvae of the polyphagous ground dwelling arctiid Grammia geneura were sampled and reared over seven generations in order to characterise its parasitoid assemblage and examine how and why this assemblage varies over time and space at a variety of scales.
2. The total parasitoid assemblage of 14 species was dominated both in diversity and frequency by relatively polyphagous tachinid flies.
3. Both the composition of the parasitoid assemblage and frequency of parasitism varied strikingly among and within sampling sites, seasons, and years.
4. Overall rates of parasitism increased consistently over the duration of caterpillar development.
5. Within sampling sites, parasitism rates were non-random with respect to habitat structure and caterpillar behaviour for the most abundant parasitoid species.
6. The large variability in parasitoid assemblage structure over space and time in this system may be a function of local host population abundance, habitat-specific parasitism, and indirect interactions between G. geneura and other Macrolepidoptera through shared oligophagous and polyphagous parasitoids.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Host–parasitoid models often identify foraging behaviour and dispersal distance as important for system persistence.
2. Laboratory observations and field trials were used to characterise foraging behaviour and dispersal capability of Platygaster californica Ashmead (Platygasteridae), a parasitoid of the gall midge Rhopalomyia californica Felt (Cecidomyiidae).
3. Although foraging parasitoids meticulously searched plants in laboratory observations, none of the laboratory trials resulted in 100% parasitism, and the proportion of parasitism declined as midge egg density increased.
4. The field trials showed that the distribution of parasitism over distance from a central release point was hump-shaped, as predicted by a simple diffusion model. Mean parasitoid dispersal distance was 4.5 m, considerably farther than the 1.7 m mean midge dispersal found in previous work.
5. Although the parasitoid appears to search thoroughly for midge eggs and to disperse farther than the midge, the results of this study show how this host–parasitoid system may persist due to spatially variable incomplete parasitism.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Little is known about underlying mechanisms by which plants indirectly affect parasitism success in hymenopteran endoparasitoids. The hypothesis that host-plant effects can challenge the innate immune system of an insect host was experimentally tested in this study using a model tritrophic, crucifer – lepidopteran [ Plutella xylostella (L.)] – parasitoid [ Cotesia plutellae (Kurdjumov)], system.
2. The effects of host-plant suitability on herbivore performance and parasitism were examined. The bottom-up effect of plant suitability on host-parasitoid immune responses was then evaluated using measures of cellular and humoral effectors.
3. Host-plant quality showed a significant effect on the encapsulation response of P. xylostella to first instar but not to second instar parasitoid larvae. Encapsulation was never sufficient to prevent parasitoid emergence.
4. Poor host-plant suitability suppressed phenoloxidase activity in the absence of the parasitoid. The suppressive effect of C. plutellae on phenoloxidase activity was much greater and no plant effects were detectable after insects had been parasitized.
5. Despite strong plant effects on parasitism, those on immune effectors of the host were transitory or overwhelmed by the effect of the parasitoid.
6. These results demonstrated that plant-mediated variation in parasitism success by C. plutellae were not as a result of plant nutritional status or other attributes affecting the immune function of P. xylostella , nor to host-plant effects on superparasitism.
7. In these experiments, P. xylostella was a fully permissive host to C. plutellae and host-plant-mediated effects on the innate immune response appeared to play no part in parasitoid survival within hosts.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Ecological interactions between parasitoids and their hosts are extremely strong as parasitoid offspring rely entirely on an individual host to complete development. The ability of a parasitoid to use a host is influenced directly by the degree to which the parasitoid can overcome host defences and grow within the host.
2. Hymenopteran parasitoids have evolved different host-specific strategies to defeat the host immune system, such as the use of venom, endosymbiont virus, or mimicking the host tissue. Dipteran parasitoids from the Tachinidae family do not use these subterfuges and rely mainly on avoiding the host immune system by hiding in specific tissues.
3. Little is known of the effect of this strategy on the host immune system, the absorption of nutrients by the parasitoid larvae, or the implications for parasitoid host range.
4. In this study, the impact of a polyphagous tachinid parasitoid Compsilura concinnata Meigen on a pest lepidopteran Trichoplusia ni Hübner are assessed. Phenoloxidase levels and haemolymph proteins were measured in parasitised T. ni as a function of host immune response.
5. Haemolymph phenoloxidase in the host did not vary with parasitisation but was triggered when a piece of monofilament was implanted in the haemocoel. Haemolymph proteins were depleted in heavily parasitised T. ni .
6. These results indicate that C. concinnata has a strategy that avoids the host immune system, and accesses the necessary nutrients for larval growth. This strategy could explain the success of this tachinid and its wide host range.  相似文献

Abstract The first instances of egg parasitism of Chrysophtharta agricola , a pest of eucalypt plantations, are recorded. Enoggera nassaui was found parasitising C. agricola egg batches in Tasmania, the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), New South Wales and Victoria: this is the first record of this parasitoid species from Victoria. One instance of Neopolycystus sp. parasitising C. agricola eggs in Victoria was also recorded. Parasitism of egg batches by E. nassaui ranged from 0 to 55% between five geographical populations collected in mainland Australia ( n  = 45), and from 0 to 2% between two populations collected in Tasmania ( n  = 300). For mainland sites at which parasitism was recorded, parasitism rates within sites differed significantly from either population in Tasmania. Reciprocal exposure experiments using one Tasmanian (Florentine Valley) and one parasitised mainland (Picadilly Circus, ACT) population were conducted in the laboratory to examine whether these different parasitism rates were attributable to egg or parasitoid origin. Parasitoids from the ACT parasitised C. agricola eggs of both origins more successfully than parasitoids from Tasmania, with up to 65% wasp emergence compared with 33% from Tasmania. Parasitoid origin significantly affected the number of wasps that emerged from exposed batches, but not the total loss from parasitism.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Intrinsic, inter-specific competition between parasitoid wasp species is a key factor in ecological community dynamics and is particularly important for application in biological control. Here three parasitoid wasp species with overlapping host ranges and differing life history strategies were chosen to examine parasitoid–parasitoid interactions: the egg parasitoid Trichogramma pretiosum, the egg–larval, polyembryonic parasitoid wasp Copidosoma floridanum, and the gregarious larval parasitoid Glyptapanteles pallipes , with the plusiine loopers Acanthoplusia agnata and Trichoplusia ni as hosts.
2.  Copidosoma floridanum has been shown to be an intrinsically superior competitor against larval parasitoids because of their production and increased investment in a soldier larval caste during development, but little is known of their interactions with egg parasitoid species. Trichogramma pretiosum completely dominated intrinsic competition with C. floridanum regardless of oviposition order or sex of the C. floridanum egg.
3. Competition between C. floridanum and G. pallipes , however, depended on the host stage at which parasitism occurred, the sex of the C. floridanum egg, and parasitoid development time. Copidosoma floridanum outcompeted G. pallipes overall, despite the fact that G. pallipes injects a polyDNA virus into the host.
4. The sex of the C. floridanum egg was a significant factor in its ability to shift caste ratios to produce more soldiers in response to G. pallipes competition.
5. Only developing female C. floridanum responded to competition with G. pallipes by increasing the ratio of soldier to reproductive larvae, and this happened only when multiparasitism occurred in the host's 1st and 2nd instar.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. To clarify the use of honeydew in foraging for aphids by larvae of the ladybird beetle, Coccinella septempunctata L., searching behaviour of ladybird larvae for Aphis craccivora Koch and Acyrthosiphon pisum Harris and the abundance of honeydew under aphid colonies were examined in laboratory experiments.
2. More larvae responded by climbing the plants with aphids than responded to plants without aphids. When the plants were replaced with sticks, in order to exclude visual and olfactory cues from plants and aphids, more larvae of C. septempunctata climbed sticks above the area that contained honeydew than climbed sticks above the area that did not contain honeydew. Then, ladybird larvae use honeydew as a contact kairomone when foraging for aphids.
3.  Aphis craccivora deposited a larger number of honeydew droplets beneath the plants than did similar numbers of A. pisum. Thus, C. septempunctata larvae licked more frequently the honeydew of A. craccivora than that of A. pisum and spent longer searching on the area containing honeydew of A. craccivora than that of A. pisum . Consequently, a larger number of larvae climbed a stick above honeydew of A. craccivora than that of A. pisum.
4. It may be also considered that C. septempunctata larvae can distinguish honeydew of the two aphid species and respond more strongly to A. craccivora than A. pisum.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. The strength or density dependence of pairwise species interactions can depend on the presence or absence of other species, especially potential mutualists.
2. The gall wasp Disholcaspis eldoradensis induces plant galls that secrete a sweet honeydew from their top surfaces while the wasp larvae are active. These galls are actively tended by Argentine ants, which collect the honeydew and drive off parasitoids attempting to attack the gall wasp.
3. When ants were excluded, the total rate of parasitism by seven species of parasitoids increased by 36%, and the rate of gall-wasp emergence decreased by 54%.
4. The total percentage parasitism was affected by gall density when ants were excluded but not when ants were unmanipulated, suggesting a change in parasitoid functional responses due to ant tending.
5. In addition, excluding ants significantly altered the proportions of different parasitoid species that emerged from galls; one parasitoid species increased from 1% to 34%, and another decreased from 46% to 19%.
6. The invasive Argentine ants studied are capable of maintaining the mutualism with the gall wasps that evolved in the presence of different ant species and also act as a selective filter for the local community of generalist parasitoids trying to attack this gall species.  相似文献

Abstract:  Interspecific competition between Diadegma semiclausum and Cotesia plutellae was investigated at 25°C in the laboratory, by exposing the third instar larvae of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella to both species together, either species alone or by exposing the host larvae already parasitized by one species, at different intervals, to the other. When host larvae were exposed simultaneously to two species in one arena, parasitism rates of the host by each species were not reduced by the presence of the other species; joint parasitism rate by two species was not significantly higher than that by either parasitoid alone. Both parasitoids could lay eggs into the host larvae which had previously been parasitized by the other species, leading to the occurrence of multiparasitized hosts. When host larvae were parasitized first by D. semiclausum and then being followed within 1–2 h by exposing to C. plutellae , or vice versa, ensuing parasitoid cocoons from the multiparasitized host larvae were nearly all C. plutellae . When host larvae were parasitized initially by C. plutellae and then being followed by D. semiclausum two or more days later, all parasitoids ensued from the multiparasitized hosts were C. plutellae . In contrast, when host larvae were parasitized initially by D. semiclausum and then being followed by C. plutellae two or more days later, most host larvae could not survive to prepupae and most of the ensuing parasitoid adults from the surviving hosts were D. semiclausum . Dissections of host larvae at various time intervals after parasitization by the two parasitoids showed that development of both parasitoids in multiparasitized hosts were somewhat arrested, and that the first instar larvae of C. plutellae could initiate a physical attack on the larvae of D. semiclausum and remove the latter.  相似文献

Abstract:  Experiments were conducted in the laboratory and in greenhouses. Of three neem preparations sprayed upon eggs, only neem oil (NO) exerted a negative impact on the hatching rate of Coccinella septempunctata and Chrysoperla carnea . First instar larvae of Episyrphus balteatus proved to be highly susceptible, when feeding 24 h on aphids sprayed with neem kernel water extract (NKWE). First instar larvae of C. septempunctata showed a very high mortality when feeding on aphids sprayed with different neem preparations. Aphid feeding and live span was reduced. When NKWE had been applied to the soil, the mortality of larvae of E. balteatus and C. septempunctata were lower, when feeding on aphids. Second instar larvae of C. septempunctata were far less susceptible when feeding 48 h on neem-sprayed aphids than first instars; the time of their development was prolonged, and aphid consumption reduced. Larvae of C. carnea proved to be less susceptible, when feeding on neem-sprayed aphids, than E. balteatus and C. septempunctata . In C. carnea , however, significant influences were also observed in aphid consumption, time of development, mortality, longevity, and rate of deformity. NO, containing a very low concentration of azadirachtin A, had stronger negative effects than NeemAzal-T/S®, in all observations. In the parasitoid Diaeretiella rapae , NKWE application to the soil induced negative reactions, when aphids on these plants were parasitized: low percentage parasitization, lowered mummy weight, low emergence rate of adults of F1 and even of F2. Foliar sprays of NKWE had less severe effects in this parasitoid species. The results are discussed with regard to their theoretical and practical significance.  相似文献

1 Aphid populations may show strong year-to-year fluctuations, but questions remain regarding the dominance of factors that cause this variation, especially the role of natural enemies. To better understand the dynamics of aphid species that occur as pests in cereals, we investigated the relative influence of top-down control by a predator and weather (temperature and precipitation) on population fluctuations of three cereal aphid species.
2 From 1987 to 2005, populations of Metopolophium dirhodum , Sitobion avenae and Rhopalosiphum padi in insecticide-free stands of winter wheat were monitored in the Praha-Ruzyné region of the Czech Republic. Densities of an aphidophagous predator, the ladybeetle Coccinella septempunctata , were recorded from an overwintering site in the landscape. Weather was quantified using historical records.
3 A significant bottom-up effect of densities of aphids on those of C.   septempunctata was found, but evidence of direct top-down regulation of aphids by C.   septempunctata was only significant in the case of R.   padi . There was no significant periodicity in the dynamics of the aphid or C.   septempunctata , suggesting that there was no clear predator-prey cycle. Combinations of C.   septempunctata and weather variables could be used to explain M.   dirhodum and R.   padi per capita rate of change. There were also indications that weather directly affected peak density of M.   dirhodum .
4 We conclude that regional estimates of C.   septempunctata densities are not sufficient to determine whether aphid population dynamics are driven by predator–prey interactions. Feasibility of time series analysis as an investigative tool in aphid population dynamics studies is discussed.  相似文献

Some parasitoid wasps appear to control the behaviour of their hosts. However, altered behaviours of parasitised hosts are not necessarily caused by parasitoids but are sometimes the result of traumatic side effects of parasitism. However, it was difficult for us to discriminate the cause of host's behaviours between manipulation by parasitoids and traumatic side effects. Larvae of the parasitoid wasp Cotesia glomerata form cocoon clusters after egression from the parasitised host caterpillar Pieris brassicae . Following parasitoid egression, host caterpillars survive for several days and remain near the cocoon clusters. These caterpillars may repel solitary pteromalid hyperparasitoid wasps, Trichomalopsis apanteloctena , that attempt to parasitise fresh C. glomerata pupae. We allowed hyperparasitoids to attack cocoon clusters in the field and laboratory and then assessed the costs and benefits to C. glomerata of attachment by the parasitised caterpillars. The eclosion success of C. glomerata in cocoon clusters with attached caterpillars was higher than that in clusters without attached caterpillars in both field and laboratory experiments. This difference was attributed to shorter hyperparasitoid visits to cocoon clusters with attached host caterpillars. However, large cluster size was potentially costly for host attachment, because the duration of host caterpillar attachment decreased with increasing numbers of C. glomerata per caterpillar. This trade-off may be related to shortages of fat body resources, which are shared between the development of wasp larvae and the survival of host caterpillars. Therefore, we concluded that caterpillar attachment satisfied some requirements of host manipulation by C. glomerata .  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Spatial habitat structure can influence the likelihood of patch colonisation by dispersing individuals, and this likelihood may differ according to trophic position, potentially leading to a refuge from parasitism for hosts.
2. Whether habitat patch size, isolation, and host-plant heterogeneity differentially affected host and parasitoid abundance, and parasitism rates was tested using a tri-trophic thistle–herbivore–parasitoid system.
3.  Cirsium palustre thistles ( n = 240) were transplanted in 24 blocks replicated in two sites, creating a range of habitat patch sizes at increasing distance from a pre-existing source population. Plant architecture and phenological stage were measured for each plant and the numbers of the herbivore Tephritis conura and parasitoid Pteromalus elevatus recorded.
4. Mean herbivore numbers per plant increased with host-plant density per patch, but parasitoid numbers and parasitism rates were unaffected. Patch distance from the source population did not influence insect abundance or parasitism rates. Parasitoid abundance was positively correlated with host insect number, and parasitism rates were negatively density dependent. Host-plant phenological stage was positively correlated with herbivore and parasitoid abundance, and parasitism rates at both patch and host-plant scales.
5. The differential response between herbivore and parasitoid to host-plant density did not lead to a spatial refuge but may have contributed to the observed parasitism rates being negatively density dependent. Heterogeneity in patch quality, mediated by variation in host-plant phenology, was more important than spatial habitat structure for both the herbivore and parasitoid populations, and for parasitism rates.  相似文献
