Growth strategies of the two varieties of Arrhenatherum elatius were studied. The two varieties studied were: onion couch, which produces bulbous swollen internodes and is an arable weed of local importance, whilst tall oat-grass is more widely distributed. An experiment in which the two varieties were grown at different densities in monoculture and were harvested at intervals, highlighted various aspects of the competitive relation between the two varieties and an annual crop. Significant and consistent differences were found between the two varieties for most of the attributes measured during the two growing seasons. Tall oat-grass allocated a greater proportion of its whole shoot dry weight to producing vigorous aerial tillers, whereas onion couch allocated a greater proportion of its whole shoot dry weight to the development of basal internodes. The regulation of tiller number as a reaction to increasing density in tall oat-grass is achieved by high tiller mortality, whereas in onion couch, this stress is expressed by small tiller mortality. Growth pattern shown by the two varieties of A. elatius reflect the adaptive strategies evolved by them in two different habitats and are due to the genetic factors which determine the presence or absence of their characteristic basal internodes.  相似文献

This study investigates the performance of vegetative propagules of onion couch (Arrhenatherum elatius var. bulbosum) of varying sizes during the crop growth cycle; especially trends in tiller and bulb production and crop yield loss. The results suggest that the earlier the crop canopy closes the more suppression it will exert on the bulb formation stage of onion couch and hence its future reproductive potential. The closed canopy provided by a dense crop cut short the bulb formation phase and forced onion couch to invest more in aerial tillers in order to compete and coexist with the taller tillers of the crop. An additive experimental design used here to predict the crop losses indicated that natural infestation of onion couch caused greater crop yield loss compared to artificially planted plots. It was found that, although the regrowth from large aggregates with densely packed bulb chains is reduced by correlative dominance and density dependent mortality, presence of such large aggregates can affect crop yield by interfering with the establishment of crop. The competitiveness and development pattern of onion couch suggests that the recent spread of the weed and the reported variable results of control measures is due to the recent shift in agricultural practices.  相似文献

RAPD (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA) markers were used to identify genets within a weed infestation of Arrhenatherum elatius ssp bulbosum (“onion couch”). Three selected primers could discriminate between 18 sexually-derived plants of A. elatius ssp. elatius. Using these primers, RAPD phenotypes were obtained for ramets of ssp. bulbosum from a population of unknown sexual derivation, i.e. predominantly sexual or vegetative. Thirty three RAPD phenotypes were observed amongst 65 plants. Ramets with identical RAPD phenotypes were termed “genets”. Some genets of ssp. bulbosum were found in localised patches, whereas others had much wider ranges, indicating long-distance dispersal by farm machinery. RAPD markers provide a useful tool for discriminating between genets within an established plant population.  相似文献

Fender’s blue butterfly is an endangered species restricted to fragmented, grassland remnants that are becoming increasingly dominated by tall, invasive grasses in western Oregon, USA. I performed a removal experiment to assess the impacts of structural degradation accompanying the invasion of Arrhenatherum elatius, tall oat grass, on butterfly fitness and fitness related behaviors. Clipping of A. elatius to native grass sward height resulted in 2.5–5 times as many eggs laid per leaf of host plant. Both male and female butterflies basked more frequently in areas removed of A. elatius inflorescences and upon encountering the treatment edge butterflies had a high rate of return into a large area removed of the grass inflorescences. Although butterfly behavior appeared to be affected by the change in sward height on the treatment edge, there was no evidence for the edge causing a disproportionate egg load. Invasion and dominance by A. elatius appeared to diminish host plant apparency which may result in overloading of eggs on conspicuous host plants, increased incidence of emigration, and a decrease in the likelihood of colonization because female butterflies appeared indifferent to larval resources beneath A. elatius inflorescences. Dominance of natural shortgrass prairies by tall stature grasses like A. elatius may be an insidious form of habitat degradation for grassland Lepidoptera worldwide, but it may go largely unnoticed because larval and adult resources can persist under the unnaturally tall grass canopy.  相似文献

Summary On colliery heaps in northern France, a tall grassland community dominated by Arrhenatherum elatius, give place to a thin grassland community in which Hieracium pilosella is very abundant. It has been claimed that Hieracium pilosella is an allelopathic species and this phenomenon has been investigated as an explanation of this phase of plant succession. The importance of osmotic pressure in tested plant extracts is demonstrated and may be responsible for presumed allelopathy. Two phytotoxic compounds have been revealed in roots+rhizomes of Hieracium pilosella (umbelliferon and apigenin-glucoside). A third phytotoxic compound was exuded by roots in hydroponic cultures (7-glucoside-umbelliferon or skimin). However no toxicity of soil has been found and no phytotoxic compounds appeared to be present in the soil under Hieracium pilosella. Experimental mixed cultures (sterile or non-sterile conditions) reveal suppression of Hieracium pilosella by Arrhenatherum elatius rather than the reverse. Allelopathy cannot be invoked to explain this plant succession.  相似文献

Tall expansive grasses act as serious weeds since they spread intensively and are a important threat to biodiversity of various plant communities. A field experiment was set up based on three sets of paired plots, where Calamagrostis epigejos and Arrhenatherum elatius dominated and a mixture of both these tall grasses occurred. Parallel plots were treated by additional amounts of nitrogen (50 kg N ha−1) for six years (2002–2007). Above-ground biomass was harvested in both wet (2004) and dry (2007) years, separated in individual fractions, and weighed to determine the above-ground biomass. We wanted to know if a higher nitrogen availability in dry year can support above-ground growth of expansive tall grasses C. epigejos and A. elatius and what their competitive ability of these tall grasses in mixture is in dry conditions. Drought resulted in a decrease in above-ground biomass production of studied tall expansive grasses, and, in a relative increase in mortality of A. elatius shoots in comparison with C. epigejos. Drought can substantially reduce the effect of applied nitrogen on above-ground growth of expansive tall grasses. However, A. elatius appears to be producing more above-ground biomass after application of N even in relatively dry conditions.  相似文献

We studied the effects of differences in root growth and nutrient pool on the competitive ability of Festuca ovina (short grass), Arrhenatherum elatius and Calamagrostis epigejos (tall grasses) grown in monocultures and in mixtures of homogeneous and heterogeneous environments during two growing seasons. Analysis of variance revealed a significant effect of plant species on nutrient concentrations in above-ground biomass and of substrate type on contents of N, K, Ca, Mg in biomass. The ANOVA also confirmed the significant effect of competitive environment on the concentration of N, K in above-ground biomass. In heterogeneous environments, both tall grasses (in competition with F. ovina) were able to produce more roots in the nutrient-rich patches and to accumulate more nitrogen in plant tissues, which was associated with higher yield of their above-ground biomass. Thus, the relative competitive ability for nutrients of both tall grasses was higher than that of F. ovina. This competitive ability of A. elatius to C. epigejos increased in heterogeneous treatments.  相似文献

The bacterial community compositions in Chenopodium album and Stellaria media seeds recovered from soil (soil weed seedbank), from bulk soil, and from seeds harvested from plants grown in the same soils were compared. It was hypothesized that bacterial communities in soil weed seedbanks are distinct from the ones present in bulk soils. For that purpose, bacterial polymerase chain reaction denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR–DGGE) fingerprints, made from DNA extracts of different soils and seed fractions, were analyzed by principal component analysis. Bacterial fingerprints from C. album and S. media seeds differed from each other and from soil. Further, it revealed that bacterial fingerprints from soil-recovered and plant-harvested seeds from the same species clustered together. Hence, it was concluded that microbial communities associated with seeds in soil mostly originated from the mother plant and not from soil. In addition, the results indicated that the presence of a weed seedbank in arable soils can increase soil microbial diversity. Thus, a change in species composition or size of the soil weed seedbank, for instance, as a result of a change in crop management, could affect soil microbial diversity. The consequence of increased diversity is yet unknown, but by virtue of identification of dominant bands in PCR–DGGE fingerprints as Lysobacter oryzae (among four other species), it became clear that bacteria potentially antagonizing phytopathogens dominate in C. album seeds in soil. The role of these potential antagonists on weed and crop plant growth was discussed.  相似文献

Experimental studies that explore the possible causes of ploidy distributions and niche differentiation are rare. Increased competitive ability may be advantageous for survival in dense vegetation and may strongly affect local and regional abundances of cytotypes and potentially contribute to invasion success. We compared survival, growth and reproduction of plants originating from bulbils of three cytotypes (2n = 4x, 5x, 6x) of Allium oleraceum growing with and without a competitor (Arrhenatherum elatius). There was a strong negative effect of competition but no effect of ploidy or ploidy × competition on survivorship, height and total dry mass of A. oleraceum, i.e. no support for different competitive abilities of the ploidy levels. However, slightly different responses of populations to competition treatments within all cytotypes suggest differentiation within cytotypes. Under competition, plant survivorship was low, surviving plants were small, had low dry mass and produced neither sexual nor asexual propagules. Without competition, plant survivorship was high, and cytotypes differed in three traits after 2 year's growth: dry mass of flowers, number of flowers and ratio of the dry mass of sexual to asexual propagules all decreased with increasing ploidy level. We additionally tested tetra‐ and pentaploids as to whether plants originating from different types of propagule (bulbils, seeds) differ in survivorship, growth and reproduction when growing with and without a competitor. Plants originating from bulbils had higher survivorship, were more robust, flowered earlier and produced more propagules when compared to plants originating from seeds and grown without competition. Under competition, differences in performance between plants originating from seeds and bulbils mostly disappeared, with higher survivorship only for plants originating from bulbils.  相似文献

Predation of annual grass weed seeds in arable field margins   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Seeds of three species of annual grass weeds (Alopecurus myosuroides, Avena fatua and Bromus sterilis) were placed in field margins around arable fields in a randomised block split-plot design experiment. The field margin vegetation was either sown or naturally regenerated and either cut or uncut. The seeds were either placed in cages designed to exclude small mammals and birds or were uncaged. The proportion of seeds removed was monitored on 10 occasions and mean seed loss was analysed. In general, a greater proportion of weed seeds was removed from uncaged trays in uncut swards, suggesting predation by small mammals, which inhabit tall grass. This effect was mainly due to removal of seeds of the two large-seeded species (A. fatua and B. sterilis), with A. fatua being especially favoured. It is therefore likely that small mammals play a role in the population dynamics of major crop weeds by feeding on their seeds in field margins, especially when these are dense and uncut.  相似文献

The application of vegetation cover for the phytomanagement of heavy metal-polluted soils needs prior investigation on the suitability of plant species. In this study, behaviors of Arrhenatherum elatius and Sonchus transcaspicus, two native perennial grasses that currently grow in a mine tailing, were investigated through plant metal concentration, phytotoxicity and their detoxification responses. Both of the species accumulated Ni, Cu, Cd, Co, Mn, Pb, Cr, and Zn in shoots far below criterion concentration as a hyperaccumulators; thus, neither of them were found to be hyperaccumulators. A. elatius accumulated metals in roots and then in shoots, on the contrary, in S. transcaspicus metals were preferentially accumulated in shoots. Plants exposure to such metals resulted in oxidative stress in the considered organs as indicated by the changes in chlorophyll fluorescence, chlorophyll contents, malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and antioxidative enzyme activities. A. elatius seemed to be more affected by metal-induced oxidative stress than S. transcaspicus. Correspondingly, S. transcaspicus showed a greater capacity to adapt to metal-induced oxidative stress, depending on more effective antioxidative defense mechanisms to protect itself from oxidative damage. These findings allowed us to conclude that both of these plant species could be suitable for the phytostabilization of metal-polluted soils.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to jointly study non-mycorrhizal (dark septate fungi) and mycorrhizal (arbuscular mycorrhizae) colonization along a large range of heavy metal pollution in soil in order to determine the effective contribution of each type of endophytes in relation to heavy metal uptake and tolerance. Hence, eight sites were chosen in the mining area of northern France with respect both to a large range of heavy metal contamination (Cd, Pb, Zn) and monospecific colonization by Arrhenatherum elatius. Root colonization with both arbuscular mycorrhizae (AM) and dark septate fungi (DSF) as well as spore density in rhizospheric soil were estimated in relation to soil characteristics. Mycorrhizal infestation (hyphae, arbuscules and vesicles) was adversely affected by soil pollution almost to exclusion. The intensity of colonization with DSF was very low in presence of AM in non-contaminated soils but higher in polluted soils. The effect of the fungal colonization on the heavy metal tolerance of Arrhenatherum elatius is discussed.  相似文献

Aims

Shallow soils on acidic bedrock in dry areas of Central Europe support dry grasslands and heathlands that were formerly used as extensive pastures. These habitats are of high conservation value, but their abandonment in the 20th century triggered slow natural succession that poses a threat to specialized plant species. We asked how this vegetation and its plant diversity have changed over the past three decades and whether protected areas have positively affected habitat quality.

Location

Southwestern and central Moravia, Czech Republic.

Methods

In 2018–2019, we resurveyed 94 vegetation plots first sampled in 1986–1991 at 47 acidic dry grassland and heathland sites. We compared the number of all vascular plant species, Red List species and alien species per plot using parametric and non-parametric tests, life-form spectra using the chi-square test, species composition using detrended correspondence analysis, and indicator values using a permutation test. We also compared these changes between sites within and outside protected areas.

Results

Vegetation changes over the past three decades have been relatively small. However, we detected a decrease in total species richness, the number of Red List species and the number of characteristic species of dry grasslands. Neophytes were infrequent, while archaeophytes increased slightly. The competitive tall grass Arrhenatherum elatius, annual species and young woody plants increased in abundance or newly established at many sites. Indicator values did not change except for a slight increase in nutrient values. These negative trends occurred both within and outside protected areas but were more pronounced outside.

Conclusions

Formerly grazed acidic dry grasslands and heathlands in Moravia are slowly losing habitat specialists, including threatened plant species, and are increasingly dominated by Arrhenatherum elatius. Conservation management, especially cutting in protected areas, slows down the negative trends of decline in plant diversity and habitat quality but is insufficient to halt these processes completely.  相似文献

Carrot root tissue discs rotted rapidly in anaerobic conditions after inoculation with soil from 40 different carrot fields and from ten fields of a mixed arable farm. Significant differences occurred in rotting potential between the soils and pectolytic Clostridium spp. were isolated from the rotted discs. Direct counts of pectolytic clostridia on selective pectate plates detected populations of 44–23.5 × 103 viable propagules/g dry soil in field soils. Significant increases in viable propagules were found in the rhizosphere soils of most carrot crops and in a range of other arable crops examined. The ratios of populations in the rhizospheres and surrounding soils varied between 1.8 and 8.2. Irrigating to excess and inter-row cultivation of carrot crops did not consistently affect populations in soil or on roots.  相似文献

Abstract. The study site, Somerford Mead, is located on the river Thames floodplain and was a species‐rich flood‐meadow in the 1950s. In the 1960s and 1970s it was subjected to intensive grassland management with regular NPK additions and occasional herbicide treatment. In 1981 Somerford Mead was ploughed for the first time and converted to arable land. Seeds of an Alopecuruspratensis‐Sanguisorba officinalis flood‐meadow community (MG4; Rodwell 1992) were sown onto prepared soil in the autumn of 1986, and botanical records were made from 1985 to 1999. From 1989 to 1999, three replicates of three treatments: cow‐grazing, sheep‐grazing and no‐grazing were introduced after hay‐cutting. Analysis successfully separated the establishment phase from the experimental phase and showed a significant difference between the grazed and ungrazed treatments. Abiotic and biotic factors which might contribute to successional trends are discussed. A convoluted pattern for each treatment could be attributed in part to intrinsic‘cycles’of perennial hemicryptophytes behaving as short‐lived species and in part to the percentage frequency of many species which was reduced in 1990 and 1995/1996, years of drought. After the initial inoculation of MG4 seed and the disappearance of arable therophytes, recruitment of new species was very slow. Coefficients for Somerford Mead matched against MG4 (Rodwell 1992) produced an equilibrium within three years. It subsequently fluctuated over a 10‐yr period well below the level of Oxey Mead, the donor site. Land managers should ensure that their proposed site has the right soils and hydrology for MG4 grassland and that traditional management of hay‐cutting and aftermath grazing is practised. Only one cut a year in July could lead to a reduction in percentage frequency of most species except Arrhenatherum elatius.  相似文献

Acidification and N-deposition are continuous processes that alter the composition of plant communities. We investigated vegetation transitions in sandy grasslands and tested two hypotheses: (1) a shift from vegetation dominated by Koeleria glauca to one dominated by Corynephorus canescens is due to acidification and (2) a shift from vegetation dominated by K. glauca to one dominated by Arrhenatherum elatius is due to increased mineral-N. The occurrence of K. glauca and C. canescens followed pH shifts strikingly well. However, the pH varied considerably between sites, and we found that differences in preference for bare sand may be important for the coexistence of these two species at both high and low pH. In 75% of the gradients, the dominance of A. elatius was related to high content of mineral-N. Most species preferred lime-rich soils and we concluded that both N-enrichment and acidification may lead to loss of species in calcareous sandy grasslands.  相似文献

Abstract. Light, probably acting through the photo-receptor phytochrome, promotes germination of weed seeds when the soil is disturbed by tillage operations. A short period of burial is shown to induce an enormous ∼10000-fold increase in light sensitivity in the seeds of the arable weed Datura ferox which is interpreted as a natural transition to the 'very-low-fluence' mode of phytochrome action. Field experiments indicated that germination of buried seeds may be triggered by millisecond-exposures to sunlight and suggested a key role for the process of sensitization in the mechanisms whereby light requiring seeds detect the occurrence of soil cultivation events in arable lands.  相似文献

Summary The neotropical ant, Solenopsis geminata, in the moist lowlands of southeastern Mexico was most abundant in agricultural fields and early second growth habitats. It was not found within forest habitats. In addition to its foraging for insects and general scavenging, this ant also harvests seeds. Under field experimental conditions, a wide variety of small seeds, especially grasses, were taken. Nest mound size and number were greatest on plots experimentally seeded to high grass density and low on plots consisting of grass-dicot mixtures, pure dicot stands, or a vegetative grass strain incapable of seed production. Paspalum conjugatum, an important grass weed, was the most common seed encountered in seed storage chambers in the mounds. Under experimental field conditions, Solenopsis geminata reduced seed densities of P. conjugatum and the malvaceous weed, Malachra sp. by 97 percent or more. Seed densities of the composite, Bidens pilosa were unaffected.  相似文献

Weed seed banks in arable fields under contrasting pesticide regimes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Viable weed seed banks on a clay soil were estimated for five years from 11 arable fields receiving one of three levels of pesticide application. Low seed densities, averaging 2000 m-2, were recorded, but dicotyledonous weed seed numbers usually increased following oilseed rape crops, reaching 26 000 m-2 in one field. Field-to-field variability was large. Samples could be grouped using multivariate techniques into those dominated by grass weed seeds and those containing mainly dicotyledonous weed seeds. Within TWINSPAN classifications, most fields maintained similar seed banks during the study period, indicating relative stability of communities. Differences present at the outset of the experiment, including variation between fields in the same treatment area, were maintained for the five years. Patterns were not associated with straw disposal or spring herbicide application. Oilseed rape crops did not cause qualitative change in seed bank communities, but allowed certain species, notably Stellaria media and Sonchus asper, to increase seed numbers. Smaller and less diverse seed banks in the area receiving most herbicide were not statistically significant. Seed banks gave poor predictions of following weed populations.  相似文献
