Delayed recruitment of microscopic stages in response to cyclical cues is critical to the population dynamics of many annual and seasonally reproducing perennial seaweeds. Microscopic stages may play a similar role in continuously reproducing perennials in which adult sporophytes are subject to episodic mortality, if they can respond directly to the unpredictable onset and relaxation of unfavorable conditions. We experimentally evaluated the potential for temporary reduction in limiting resources (light, nutrients) to directly delay recruitment of giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera (L.) C.A. Agardh) gametophytes and embryonic sporophytes. Laboratory cultures were subjected to limiting conditions of light and nutrients for 1 month and then exposed to nonlimiting conditions for 10 days. Gametophytes in all treatments failed to recruit to sporophytes after 2 weeks, suggesting they are not a source of delayed recruitment in giant kelp. Sporophytes in light‐limited treatments, however, survived and grew significantly slower than non–light‐limited controls. When stimulated with light, light‐limited sporophytes grew from 2 to>10 times faster than unstimulated controls depending on nutrient availability. These results suggest that limiting resources can delay recruitment of embryonic giant kelp sporophytes for at least 1 month. Flexible timing of recruitment from embryonic sporophytes may enhance persistence of continuously reproducing perennial species when mac‐ roscopic adults are subject to episodic large‐scale removals.  相似文献

We conducted a population genetic analysis of the stalked kelp, Pterygophora californica, in the Santa Barbara Channel, California, USA. The results were compared with previous work on the genetic differentiation of giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera, in the same region. These two sympatric kelps not only share many life history and dispersal characteristics but also differ in that dislodged P. californica does not produce floating rafts with buoyant fertile sporophytes, commonly observed for M. pyrifera. We used a comparative population genetic approach with these two species to test the hypothesis that the ability to produce floating rafts increases the genetic connectivity among kelp patches in the Santa Barbara Channel. We quantified the association of habitat continuity and oceanographic distance with the genetic differentiation observed in stalked kelp, like previously conducted for giant kelp. We compared both overall (across all patches) and pairwise (between patches) genetic differentiation. We found that oceanographic transit time, habitat continuity, and geographic distance were all associated with genetic connectivity in P. californica, supporting similar previous findings for M. pyrifera. Controlling for differences in heterozygosity between kelp species using Jost's DEST, we showed that global differentiation and pairwise differentiation were similar among patches between the two kelp species, indicating that they have similar dispersal capabilities despite their differences in rafting ability. These results suggest that rafting sporophytes do not play a significant role in effective dispersal of M. pyrifera at ecologically relevant spatial and temporal scales.  相似文献

Two abalone species: green Haliotis fulgens and yellow Halioti corrugata represent nearly 97% of the total production in the Mexican abalone fishery. It has been assumed that abalone feed on the kelp algae Macrocystis pyrifera. Regional hatcheries use this species as a main source of natural food. M. pyrifera does not occur at the southern limit of the distribution of abalone species along the Baja California Peninsula. In this study, growth rates of juveniles H. fulgens, 17.3 ± 2.2 mm shell length and 0.4 ± 0.2 g body weight, were evaluated. Juveniles were fed with common species in the benthic environments inhabited by abalone along the western coast of Baja California during 191 days. Three diets were based on algae: palm kelp, Eisenia arborea, giant kelp, M. pyrifera and Gelidium robustum, and one on seagrass, Phyllospadix torreyi. Shell length and body growth rates varied between 21.5 μm day?1 and 2.2 mg day?1 for E. arborea and between 45.9 μm day?1 and 6.7 mg day?1 for M. pyrifera. Higher specific growth rates (SGR) in length and weight were determined for M. pyrifera: 0.2% and 0.7% day?1. Significant differences between values of juveniles fed M. pyrifera with the rest of the diets were found. The highest mortality (21%) was in juveniles fed the red algae G. robustum.  相似文献

We studied the population and feeding ecology of the kelp crab Taliepus marginatus in subtidal kelp forests dominated by either of two morphologically different kelp species (Macrocystis pyrifera or Lessonia trabeculata) in northern Chile. The sizes and abundances of T. marginatus differed between the two kelp habitats. Kelp crabs were more abundant in the M. pyrifera forest than in the L. trabeculata forest. Size‐frequency distributions showed that juvenile and immature crabs were more common in the M. pyrifera forest than in the L. trabeculata forest, where reproductive adults predominated. The smaller crabs in the M. pyrifera habitat also consumed a higher proportion of kelp tissues than the larger crabs in the L. trabeculata habitat, which had a higher proportion of animal food in their diet. In both kelp forests, individuals of T. marginatus showed a similar pattern of nocturnal feeding over a 24‐h period, consuming more food at night than during the day. The more complex and dense forests of M. pyrifera appear to present better nursery habitats for juvenile kelp crabs than the more open and less dense forests dominated by L. trabeculata. These results suggest that the role of the two kelp habitats for T. marginatus varies during the life cycle of the kelp crabs, with M. pyrifera tending to have nursery function and L. trabeculata being more suitable as a reproductive habitat.  相似文献

The giant kelp Macrocystis pyrifera (L.) C. Agardh is widely distributed in the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere, yet it exhibits distinct population dynamics at local to regional spatial scales. Giant kelp populations are typically perennial with the potential for year‐round reproduction and recruitment. In southern Chile, however, annual giant kelp populations exist and often persist entirely on secondary substrata (e.g., shells of the slipper limpet Crepipatella fecunda [Gastropoda, Calyptraeidae]) that can cover up to 90% of the rocky bottom. In these populations, the macroscopic sporophyte phase disappears annually during winter and early spring, leaving a 3–4 month period in which a persistent microscopic phase remains to support the subsequent year’s recruitment. We tested the effects of a suite of grazers on the recruitment success of this critical microscopic phase at two sites in southern Chile. Field experiments indicated that the snail Tegula atra negatively impacted M. pyrifera sporophyte recruitment, but that recruitment was highest in the presence of sessile female limpets, C. fecunda. Conversely, small male C. fecunda (biofilm grazers) did not regulate kelp recruitment. Laboratory observations showed that C. fecunda males only grazed on microscopic kelp gametophytes and small (<250 μm) sporophytes, rejecting larger sporophytes, whereas T. atra grazed on all the kelp stages. Recruitment to the C. fecunda treatments far exceeded that to bare rock in the absence of grazers but was not due to the physical presence of C. fecunda shells. We concluded that the key to M. pyrifera recruitment success in southern Chile is its capacity to colonize secondary substrates provided by the slipper limpet C. fecunda.  相似文献

This study was designed to understand better if and how juvenile sporophytes of Macrocystis pyrifera can photoacclimate to high-light conditions when transplanted from 10 to 3 meters over 7 d. Acclimation of adult sporophytes to light regimes in the bathymetric gradient has been extensively documented. It primarily depends on photoacclimation and translocation of resources among blades. Among other physiological differences, juvenile sporophytes of M. pyrifera lack the structural complexity shown by adults. As such, juveniles may primarily depend on their photoacclimation capacities to maintain productivity and even avoid mortality under changing light regimes. However, little is known about how these mechanisms operate in young individuals. The capacity of sporophytes to photoacclimate was assessed by examining changes in their photosynthetic performance, pigment content, and bio-optical properties of the blade. Sporophytes nutritional status and oxidative damage were also determined. Results showed that juvenile sporophytes transplanted to shallow water were able to regulate light harvesting by reducing pigment concentration, and thus, absorptance and photosynthetic efficiency. Also, shallow-water sporophytes notably enhanced the dissipation of light energy as heat (NPQ) as a photoprotective mechanism. Generally, these adjustments allowed sporophytes to manage the absorption and utilization of light energy, hence reducing the potential for photo-oxidative damage. Furthermore, no substantial changes were found in the internal reserves (i.e., soluble carbohydrates and nitrogen) of these sporophytes. To our knowledge, these results are the first to provide robust evidence of photoprotective and photoacclimation strategies in juveniles of M. pyrifera, allowing them to restrict or avoid photodamage during shallow-water cultivation.  相似文献

Laboratory and field experiments were done hi Still-water Cove, Carmel Bay, California, and Monterey Harbor, California, to determine the effect of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) on the shallow (upper) limit of giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera (L.) C. Agardh. At shallow depths, M. pyrifera did not recruit or grow to macroscopic size from gametophytes or embryonic sporophytes transplanted to vertical buoy lines; sharp decreases in PAR with depth coincided with observed recruitment and sporophyte distributions. Shade manipulations indicated that settlement of M. pyrifera zoospores was decreased, but not prohibited, by high PAR. Postsettlement stages (gametophytes and embryonic sporophytes), however, survived only under shade. These results suggest that high PAR can inhibit the recruitment of M. pyrifera to shallow water by killing its postsettlement stages; whether or not ultraviolet (UV) radiation also inhibits recruitment was not tested. In either case, however, it appears that high irradiance (PAR and/or UV) regulates the shallow limit of M. pyrifera prior to temperature and desiccation stresses inherent to intertidal regions. In an additional experiment, recruitment or growth of transplanted gametophytes or embryonic sporophytes of Macrocystis integrifolia Bory also did not occur at shallow depths, suggesting that this shallow water species accesses high irradiance regions via a method other than sexual reproduction.  相似文献

The giant kelp genus Macrocystis C. Agardh (Laminariales, Phaeophyceae) is one of the world’s most ecologically and economically important seaweed taxa, yet its taxonomy remains uncertain. Although the genus currently contains four accepted species based on variable holdfast and blade morphology [M. pyrifera (L.) C. Agardh, M. integrifolia Bory, M. angustifolia Bory, and M. laevis C. H. Hay], numerous recent studies on Macrocystis interfertility, genetic relatedness, and morphological plasticity all suggest that the genus is monospecific. We reviewed this evidence and present an explanation for the extreme phenotypic plasticity that results in morphological variability within Macrocystis, driven by the effects of environmental factors on early development of macroscopic sporophytes. We propose that the genus be collapsed back to a single species, with nomenclatural priority given to M. pyrifera.  相似文献

Recent work suggests that the ability to delay reproduction as resistant haploid gametophytes may be important for seaweeds that experience unpredictable disturbances or seasonal periods of poor conditions that result in adult sporophyte absence. Further, delayed gametophytes of some kelp species (order Laminariales) may produce sporophytes more rapidly than if they had never experienced a delay, conferring a competitive advantage when conditions improve or after disturbance events. Here, it was determined that the gametophytes of the canopy‐forming kelp Macrocystis pyrifera (L.) C. Agardh could delay reproduction in a one‐ to two‐cell state (<50 μm) for at least 7 months when grown under nutrient‐limiting conditions. These stages retained reproductive viability and produced sporophytes within 5 d once nutrients were increased. This finding suggests that gametophytes could potentially promote recovery of M. pyrifera populations after extended periods of sporophyte absence. In addition, the time required for sporophyte production between gametophytes of the four most conspicuous kelp species in Southern California that had delayed reproduction and gametophytes that had not was compared. For these four kelp species, a delay of at least 30 d conferred a 40%–76% reduction in the time required for sporophyte production once nutrients were received. Fecundity did not decrease with delay duration, suggesting there is no apparent cost of delayed development for kelps as has been observed in other organisms. Thus, delayed development may be a viable strategy for surviving and initially dominating in environments with variable quality.  相似文献

The understorey beneath a canopy of the kelp Ecklonia radiata often contains juvenile sporophytes of the same species. When canopy disturbance occurs, these juvenile sporophytes are exposed to new environmental conditions. If these juvenile sporophytes survive these new conditions, then they become a ready source of kelps to rapidly form a new canopy. This study investigated the potential of pre-existing juvenile sporophytes of E. radiata to survive post-disturbance conditions and contribute to the rapid formation of a new canopy. The potential of canopy recovery by recruitment of kelp from zoospores was also investigated. These processes were studied at different times during the summer and on reefs ranging in topographic complexity from simple, flat reefs to highly complex, rugose reefs. By tagging juvenile sporophytes after the adult kelp canopy was removed and monitoring them through time, it was demonstrated that most juveniles (> 50%) survived the change in conditions after canopy loss, with some juveniles going on to become members of a new canopy. Approximately 6-47% of tagged sporophytes died within 3-4 days after canopy removal possibly due to excessive photoinhibition and photostress as demonstrated by changes in photosynthetic performance (decreased alpha values) of juveniles. The potential contribution of juvenile sporophytes to the rapid formation of a new canopy appears to be dependent on the timing of canopy removal with late summer-autumn canopy loss favouring faster recovery. Topographically complex reefs had less short-term (7 days) survival of juvenile sporophytes than topographically simple reefs; however this difference was not carried through to the long-term (6 months) abundance of adult kelp in experimental clearings, which was greater on topographically complex reefs. Clearly, juvenile sporophytes in arrested development under existing canopies of the small kelp E. radiata are important for the rapid recovery of the kelp canopy once adults are lost through physical disturbance.  相似文献

Two species of giant kelp inhabit the coast of Chile: Macrocystis integrifolia and M. pyrifera, representing important economic resources. As part of our efforts to domesticate these kelps for mariculture, and to obtain superior cultivars, we studied their biological relationship. Hybridization experiments with clonal gametophyte cultures showed reciprocal cross-fertility and produced fertile hybrid sporophytes with intermediate morphological characters. This hybridization potential in the laboratory contrasts with the persistence of two morphologically well-defined sister taxa in natural habitats on the Pacific coast of South America. We conclude that M. integrifolia and M. pyrifera are conspecific and speculate that unknown mechanisms support the co-existence of two morphologically distinct taxa on the subspecific level.  相似文献

The kelp Undaria pinnatifida has a widespread latitudinal range in Japan, with populations exposed to very different temperature regimes. To test the hypothesis that U. pinnatifida exhibits genetic differentiation in its temperature response, juvenile sporophytes from a warmer location (Naruto, southern Japan) and two colder locations (Okirai Bay and Matsushima Bay, northern Japan) were collected and transplanted to long lines, cultivated under the environmental conditions in Matsushima Bay. These plants were bred using successive self-crossing methods for three generations and the characteristics of photosynthesis, growth, survival, and nitrogen contents of the third-generation juvenile sporophytes (2–3 cm) then were measured and compared. The plants from Naruto showed significantly higher photosynthetic activities and respiration than those from the northern populations at warmer temperatures of 20–35°C. The juvenile sporophytes from all three locations had similar growth rates below 18°C, but significant differences were observed at 18–24°C. The optimum temperatures for growth were 14–16°C in plants that originated from Okirai Bay and Matsushima Bay and 18°C in plants that originated from Naruto. These results reflected the differences in latitude. Dead plants were observed at high temperatures of 22 and 24°C in the northern population plants, whereas no plants from Naruto died. Juvenile sporophytes from Naruto exhibited the greatest capacity to accumulate high nitrogen reserves. These results suggest that the differences in high-temperature tolerance in juvenile U. pinnatifida sporophytes from geographically separated populations are due to genetic differentiation rather than phenotypic plasticity.  相似文献

Very few studies have addressed how the invasive kelp Undaria pinnatifida (Harvey) Suringar spreads beyond initial founding populations in harbours. Surveys of the harbours and accessible areas of open coast throughout southern New Zealand were conducted to determine how far U. pinnatifida populations had extended since initial incursions. Our findings clearly demonstrate that U. pinnatifida is capable of invading native communities and can establish reproductive populations in locations subjected to significant and consistent wave action. The extent of spread from source populations differs between harbours in which it has established. Dispersal is greatest in harbours with long established populations, those where populations have not been strategically managed, harbours with high water exchange with surrounding coastal waters, and where prevailing currents allow establishment of U. pinnatifida on suitable substrata close to harbour entrances. Dispersal along the open coast is primarily achieved by drifting adult sporophytes that are washed up in the rocky intertidal zone. Founding populations are most often found in the intertidal zone, primarily within rockpools. Subtidal transects and observations indicate that U. pinnatifida is well adapted to invade exposed coastlines and can establish within a broad range of niches in wave-exposed areas including rockpools, the low intertidal, shallow subtidal, Macrocystis pyrifera kelp forests, and in low light areas beyond the vertical extent of large native macroalgae. The current range of U. pinnatifida is much greater than expected and appears to be expanding. Due to its ability to grow in a broad range of environments and to form dense monospecific stands, U. pinnatifida has the potential to strongly modify almost all rocky subtidal and intertidal communities in temperate locations.  相似文献

Organisms occurring in environments subject to severe disturbance and/or periods of poor environmental quality that result in severe adult mortality can survive these periods by relying on alternate life stages that delay their development in a resistant state until conditions improve. In the northeast Pacific, the forest‐forming giant kelp Macrocystis pyrifera (L.) C. Agardh periodically experiences widespread adult mortality during extended periods of extremely low nutrients and high temperatures, such as those associated with El Niño. Recovery following these periods is hypothesized to occur from microscopic life stages that delay their development until the return of favorable conditions. In the laboratory, we experimentally examined the environmental conditions responsible for regulating delayed development of the microscopic stages of M. pyrifera from Southern California, USA. Nutrients controlled the delay and resumption of gametophyte growth and reproduction, perhaps linked to the large fluctuations in nutrients occurring seasonally and interannually in this region. Although growth of gametophytes proceeded in the virtual absence of nitrate, both nitrate and other trace nutrients were necessary for gametogenesis. Upon exposure to elevated nutrients, delayed gametophytes produced sporophytes more quickly (5–20 d) and at smaller sizes (10–200 μm) than gametophytes that had never been delayed (18–80 d, 80–400 μm, respectively), reducing negative density‐dependent effects. This finding demonstrates that delayed gametophytes of M. pyrifera rapidly utilize increased resources to consistently produce sporophytes. Further work is needed to assess their potential role in population recovery following periods of poor environmental quality.  相似文献

In order to evaluate the usefulness of a biomonitoring system using seaweeds for assessing the geographic distribution of metal ions in coastal seawaters, the metal concentrations in the sporophytes of an annual kelp, Undaria pinnatifida (Harvey) Suringar, were collected at 15 localities in Osaka Bay, Japan and compared. About 160 cm2 of the blade was cut out from the central part of clean sporophytes, rinsed in filtered seawater using an ultrasonic cleaning bath, and freeze‐dried. After digestion with 12% HNO3 in a microwave apparatus, metal concentrations in the samples were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The concentrations (dry weight basis) of most examined elements were in the parts per million range; Cr, 0.48–3.18; Ni, 0.77–5.94; Cu, 3.20–43.8; Zn, 11.3–86.8; Pb, 0.14–3.53. Comparisons of metal compositions of the U. pinnatifida samples from the northeastern area of the bay, which has a large urban population and highly developed industries inland, showed high concentrations of Cd, Pb and Cu compared with the samples from the southwestern area of the bay where the population and industries are much smaller. This suggests that U. pinnatifida metal loads can be used as a marker to track the geographic distributions of the metal concentrations in coastal seawaters, reflecting inland human activities such as shipbuilding and repairing in port areas, and can be used as a useful biomonitoring system of coastal environments for long‐term trend.  相似文献

Three geographically isolated populations of the giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera (L.) C. Ag., were examined for responses to nitrate availability in batch culture experiments using juvenile sporophytes reared from spores in the laboratory. Although maximum rates of nitrate-saturated growth were similar among groups, there were significant quantitative differences in the response to nitrate limitation that can be related to natural patterns of nutrient availability at these sites. Plants from Santa Catalina Island (most oligotrophic) achieved maximum growth rates at ambient nitrate concentrations that were lower than those for plants from Monterey Bay, California (most eutrophic), or Refugio State Beach (near Santa Barbara, California). Tissue nitrogen and amino acid concentrations were highest in plants cultured from Santa Catalina Island populations at all external nitrate concentrations, suggesting that differences in nitrate requirements for growth may reflect the efficiency of nitrate uptake and assimilation at subsaturating nitrate concentrations. Given the different physical environments from which these plants came, the data suggest that geographically isolated populations of M. pyrifera have undergone genetic divergence that can be explained by ecotypic adaptation to unique habitat conditions at these sites.  相似文献

Sex discriminating genetic markers are commonly used to facilitate breeding programs in economically and ecologically important animal and plant species. However, despite their considerable economic and ecological value, the development of sex markers for kelp species has been very limited. In this study, we used the recently described sequence of the sex determining region (SDR) of the brown algal model Ectocarpus to develop novel DNA-based sex-markers for three commercially relevant kelps: Laminaria digitata, Undaria pinnatifida and Macrocystis pyrifera. Markers were designed within nine protein coding genes of Ectocarpus male and female (U/V) sex chromosomes and tested on gametophytes of the three kelp species. Seven primer pairs corresponding to three loci in the Ectocarpus SDR amplified sex-specific bands in the three kelp species, yielding at least one male and one female marker for each species. Our work has generated the first male sex-specific markers for L. digitata and U. pinnatifida, as well as the first sex markers developed for the genus Macrocystis. The markers and methodology presented here will not only facilitate seaweed breeding programs but also represent useful tools for population and demography studies and provide a means to investigate the evolution of sex determination across this largely understudied eukaryotic group.  相似文献

Neushul , M. (U. Washington, Seattle.) Studies on the giant kelp, Macrocystis. II. Reproduction. Amer. Jour. Bot. 50(4): 354–359. Illus. 1963.—The reproduction of Macrocystis pyrifera was studied in the sea and in the laboratory. The estimated minimum time needed for the completion of the sexual life history of Macrocystis pyrifera in La Jolla, California, is from 12 to 14 months. Young sporophytes begin fruiting when they have from 4 to 8 stipes and a somatic frond weight of from 8 to 10 kg. The behavior of abscised sporophylls in laboratory tanks, as well as their morphology and coloration, strongly suggests an interrelationship between the translocation of photosynthetic products and fructification.  相似文献

Recently, withering of farmed juvenile sporophytes of the kelp Undaria pinnatifida (Harvey) Suringar has led to reduced production of this species in northern Japan, possibly because of the high water temperature and low nutrient concentration in cultivation areas. This problem may be solved by introducing parental plants with greater tolerance to high temperature and low nutrient conditions. We examined the combined effects of various temperatures (15, 20, 24, and 27 °C) and nutrient availabilities (seawater enriched with 25 % PESI medium and non-enriched seawater) on the growth and survival of cultivated juvenile sporophytes (1–2 cm) collected from Matsushima Bay, Miyagi Prefecture in northern Japan and Naruto, Tokushima Prefecture in southern Japan. The relative growth rates of juvenile sporophytes from both locations were significantly greater at 15 and 20 °C than at 24 and 27 °C. The juvenile sporophytes cultured in enriched medium had significantly higher relative growth rates than those cultivated in non-enriched seawater. Dead juveniles were observed in non-enriched seawater at all temperatures and the survival percentage decreased with increasing seawater temperatures. Compared to the juvenile sporophytes from Matsushima Bay, those from Naruto showed greater tolerance to high temperature even under the low nutrient condition. These results suggest that the withering of juvenile sporophytes is caused by the combined effects of low nutrient availability and high temperature. A potential solution to this problem is to introduce ecotypes with greater tolerance to high temperature and low nutrient conditions from a warmer region of Japan.  相似文献
