IntroductionBack muscle capacity is impaired in chronic low back pain patients but no motivation-free test exists to measure it. The aims of this study were to assess the reliability and criterion validity of electromyographic indices of muscle fatigue during an intermittent absolute endurance test.MethodsHealthy subjects (44 males and 29 females; age: 20–55 yrs) performed three maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) and a fatigue test while standing in a static dynamometer. Surface EMG signals were collected from four pairs of back muscles (multifidus at the L5 level, iliocostalis lumborum at L3, and longissimus at L1 and T10). The fatigue test, assessing absolute endurance (90-Nm torque), consisted in performing an intermittent extension task to exhaustion. Strength was defined as the peak MVC whereas our endurance criterion was defined as the time to reach exhaustion (Tend) during the fatigue test. From the first five min (females) or ten min (males) of EMG data, frequency and time-frequency domain analyses were applied to compute various spectral indices of muscle fatigue.ResultsThe EMG indices were more reliable when computed from the time-frequency domain than when computed from the frequency domain, but showed comparable correlation results (criterion validity) with Tend and Strength. Some EMG indices reached moderate to good correlation (range: 0.64–0.69) with Tend, lower correlations (range: 0.39–0.55) with Strength, and good to excellent between-day test-retest reliability results (intra-class correlation range: 0.75–0.83). The quantification of the spectral content more locally in different frequency bands of the power spectrum was less valid and reliable than the indices computed from the entire power spectrum. Differences observed among muscles were interpreted in light of specific neuromuscular activation levels that were observed during the endurance test. These findings supported the use of an intermittent and time-limited (5–10 min) absolute endurance test, that is a practical way to assess the back capacity of chronic low back pain subjects, to assess absolute endurance as well as strength with the use of electromyographic indices of muscle fatigue.  相似文献

IntroductionIn a previous paper, standard surface electromyographic (EMG) indices of muscle fatigue, which are based on the lowering of the median or mean frequencies of the EMG power spectrum in time, were applied during an intermittent absolute endurance test and were evaluated relative to criterion validity and test–retest reliability. The aims of this study were to assess mechanical and alternative EMG correlates of muscle fatigue.MethodsHealthy subjects (44 males and 29 females; age: 20–55 yrs) performed three maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) and an endurance test while standing in a static dynamometer. Surface EMG signals were collected from four pairs of back muscles (multifidus at the L5 level, iliocostalis lumborum at L3, and longissimus at L1 and T10). The test, assessing absolute endurance (90 N m torque), consisted of performing an intermittent extension task to exhaustion. Strength was defined as the peak MVC whereas our endurance criterion was defined as the time to reach exhaustion (Tend) during the endurance test. Mechanical indices quantifying physiological tremor and steadiness were computed from the dynamometer signals (L5/S1 extension moments) along with EMG indices presumably sensitive to variable load sharing between back muscle synergists during the endurance test.ResultsMechanical indices were significantly correlated to Tend (r range: −0.47 to –0.53) but showed deceiving reliability results. Conversely, the EMG indices were correlated to Tend (r range: −0.43 to –0.63) with some of them particularly correlated to Strength (r =  0.72 to –0.81). In addition, their reliability results were acceptable (intra-class correlation coefficient >0.75; standard error of measurement <10% of the mean) in many cases. Finally, several analyses substantiated their physiological relevance. These findings imply that these new EMG indices could be used to predict absolute endurance as well as strength with the use of a single intermittent and time-limited (5–10 min) absolute endurance test, a practical way to assess the back capacity of chronic low back pain subjects.  相似文献

The validity of the Sorensen test as a measure for back muscle endurance is controversial due to a possible impact of hip extensor muscles. The aim of this study was to investigate the criterion validity of an alternative test (Ito test) compared to the Sorensen test. Both procedures were performed by 29 healthy subjects (11 women) for 5 s and until exhaustion (randomized order). EMG activity was measured from 3 lumbar back and 3 hip extensor muscles. Muscular involvement in test positions was calculated as percentage of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). Muscle fatigue was determined by the normalized regression coefficient of the median frequencies of the EMG power spectrum (NMFslope). Prediction of holding time by NMFslope values was investigated using regression analysis. In the test positions, the hamstring muscles were activated to a higher MVC percentage in the Sorensen than in the Ito test, while the iliocostalis muscle was less activated. Similarly, the iliocostalis (p = 0.006) and the multifidi muscles (p = 0.03) significantly contributed to predict holding time in the Ito test, whereas the multifidi muscles (p = 0.001) and the semitendinosus muscle (p = 0.046) did so in the Sorensen test. The results of this study indicate that the Ito test might present a valuable alternative for testing back muscle endurance in LBP patients.  相似文献

The aims of the present study were (1) to investigate the differences in median frequency characteristics between back and hip muscles of healthy subjects during a Biering-Sørensen test, (2) to determine if the Biering-Sørensen test is a valid test for measuring back muscle fatigue, and (3) to standardise the Biering-Sørensen test by using objective movement analysis when defining endurance time, and compare this to the original method based on tactile feedback. Twenty healthy subjects participated in this experiment. The electromyographic activity of eight back and hip muscles was bilaterally measured. In addition three-dimensional data of the lumbar region were collected with an ultrasound movement analysis system. Median frequencies were computed from the EMG power spectra. Two methods of determining the endurance time of the Biering-Sørensen test yielded highly correlated but significantly different normalized median frequency slope values (NMFslope). Significant differences in NMFslope values between several back and hip muscles could be demonstrated. Low to moderate correlation coefficients were shown between NMFslope values and endurance time. Multiple stepwise linear regression analyses revealed that only NMFslope of the thoracic part of the iliocostalis lumborum muscle could significantly predict the test endurance time. The findings of the present study support the validity of the Biering-Sørensen test for measuring back muscle fatigue.  相似文献

The influence of psychosocial components on back and abdominal endurance tests in patients with persistent non-specific low back pain should be investigated to ensure the correct interpretation of these measures. Three-hundred and thirty-two patients (291 men and 41 women) from 19 to 63 years performed an abdominal and back muscle endurance test after completing some psychosocial questionnaires. During the endurance tests, surface electromyography signals of the internal obliques, the external obliques, the lumbar multifidus and the iliocostalis were recorded. Patients were dichotomized as underperformers and good performers, by comparing their real endurance time, to the expected time of endurance derived from the normalized median frequency slope. Independent t-tests were performed to examine the differences on the outcome of the questionnaires. In the back muscle endurance test, the underperformers had significantly lower (p < 0.05) scores on some of the physical subscales of the SF-36. The underperformers group of the AE test scored significantly higher on the DRAM MZDI (p = 0.018) and on the PCS scale (p = 0.020) and showed also significantly lower scores on the SF-36 (p < 0.05). Back muscle endurance tests are influenced by physical components, while abdominal endurance tests seem influenced by psychosocial components.  相似文献

Assessment strategy and the evolution of fighting behaviour   总被引:31,自引:0,他引:31
The view is examined that the adaptive value of conventional aspects of fighting behaviour is for assessment of relative RHP (resource holding power) of the combatants. Outcomes of aggressive disputes should be decided by each individual's fitness budget available for expenditure during a fight (determined by the fitness difference between adoption of alternative strategies, escalation or withdrawal without escalation) and on the rate of expenditure of the fitness budget if escalation occurs (determined by the RHPs of the combatants). Thus response thresholds for alternative strategies (“assessments”) will be determined by natural selection on a basis of which opponent is likely to expend its fitness budget first, should escalation occur. This “loser” should retreat (before escalation) and the winner should stay in possession of the resource. Many aggressive decisions depend on whether one is a resource holder, or an attacker. Assuming the RHP of the combatants to be equal, there are many instances of fitness pay-off imbalances between holder and attacker which should weight the dispute outcome in favour of one or other opponent by allowing it a greater expendable fitness budget. Usually the weighting favours the holder; the attacker therefore needs a correspondingly higher RHP before it may be expected to win. This is not invariably the case, and much observed data fits the predictions of this sort of model. If assessments are perfect and budget expenditure rates exactly predictable, then there would never seem to be any case for escalation. Escalation can be explained in terms of injury inflictions (expenditures) occurring as discrete events; i.e. as “bouts” won or lost during fighting. Assessment can give only a probabilistic prediction of the outcome of a bout. A simple model is developed to investigate escalation situations. Each combatant assesses relative RHP; this correlates with an absolute probability of winning the next bout (cabs). The stake played for is infliction of loss of RHP and is determined by the fitness budgets of the opponents. (Each individual plays for the withdrawal of its opponent.) This defines a critical probability of winning (ccrit) for each combatant, above which escalation is the favourable strategy (cabs > ccrit) and below which withdrawal is favourable (cabs < ccrit). Escalation should occur only where cabs-ccrit is positive for both combatants. This model gives predictions compatible with the observations, indicating that RHP loss alone can be adequate to explain withdrawal: escalation behaviour. Withdrawal tendency will be increased by low searching costs. Escalations should be restricted to closely matched RHP opponents if RHP disparity is the major imbalance. Outside the “escalation range” of a given individual, the higher RHP individual wins and the lower one loses (i.e. it should withdraw after conventional display). RHP disparity and holder: attacker imbalance should both interact to shape the observed pattern, though their relative importances will depend on species and situation. In some instances selection may favour immediate withdrawal from an occupied territory even without assessment of RHP.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to use Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) to predict the orientation and amplitude of the applied force during the push phase of manual wheelchair propulsion.Trunk and the right-upper limb kinematics data were assessed with an optoeletronic device (Qualisys) and the force applied on the handrim was recorded with an instrumented wheel (SMARTWheel®). Data acquisitions were performed at 60/80/10/120/140% of the freely chosen frequency at submaximal and maximal conditions. The final database consisted of d = 5708 push phases. The input data were the trunk and right upper-limb kinematics (joint angle, angular velocity and acceleration) and anthropometric data (height, weight, segment length) and the output data were the applied forces orientation and amplitude. A ratio of 70/15/15 was used to train, validate and test the RNN (dtrain = 3996, dvalidation = 856 and dtest = 856). The angle and amplitude errors between the measured and predicted force was assessed from dtest. Results showed that for most of the push phase (∼70%), the force direction prediction errors were less than 12°. The mean absolute amplitude errors were less than 8 N and the mean absolute amplitude percentage errors were less than 20% for most of the push phase (∼80%).  相似文献

Objective:The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference in back extensor muscle endurance before and after kinesiology tape application to all back stabilizer muscles and to the erector spinae alone. Methods:We assessed 32 adults (16 men and 16 women), randomly divided into two groups. In the erector spinae taping (EST) group, kinesiology tape was applied only to the erector spinae, and in the total muscle taping (TMT) group, kinesiology tape was applied to the erector spinae, latissimus dorsi, lower trapezius, internal oblique abdominis, and external oblique abdominis. Results:Both groups showed significant difference in terms of back extensor muscle endurance after kinesiology tape application (p<0.05). Between-group comparison revealed that the TMT group had more back extensor muscle endurance than the EST group (p<0.05) after kinesiology tape application. Conclusions:These findings indicate that, to improve back extensor muscle endurance, kinesiology tape should be applied to all back stabilizer muscles, rather than to the erector spinae muscles alone.  相似文献

Introduction

Changes in sensorimotor function and increased trunk muscle fatigability have been identified in patients with chronic low back pain (cLBP). This study assessed the control of trunk force production in conditions with and without local erector spinae muscle vibration and evaluated the influence of muscle fatigue on trunk sensorimotor control.

Methods

Twenty non-specific cLBP patients and 20 healthy participants were asked to perform submaximal isometric trunk extension torque with and without local vibration stimulation, before and after a trunk extensor muscle fatigue protocol. Constant error (CE), variable error (VE) as well as absolute error (AE) in peak torque were computed and compared across conditions. Trunk extensor muscle activation during isometric contractions and during the fatigue protocol was measured using surface electromyography (sEMG).

Results

Force reproduction accuracy of the trunk was significantly lower in the patient group (CE = 9.81 ± 2.23 Nm; AE = 18.16 ± 3.97 Nm) than in healthy participants (CE = 4.44 ± 1.68 Nm; AE = 12.23 ± 2.44 Nm). Local erector spinae vibration induced a significant reduction in CE (4.33 ± 2.14 Nm) and AE (13.71 ± 3.45 Nm) mean scores in the patient group. Healthy participants conversely showed a significant increase in CE (8.17 ± 2.10 Nm) and AE (16.29 ± 2.82 Nm) mean scores under vibration conditions. The fatigue protocol induced erector spinae muscle fatigue as illustrated by a significant decrease in sEMG median time-frequency slopes. Following the fatigue protocol, patients with cLBP showed significant decrease in sEMG root mean square activity at L4-5 level and responded in similar manner with and without vibration stimulation in regard to CE mean scores.

Conclusions

Patients with cLBP have a less accurate force reproduction sense than healthy participants. Local muscle vibration led to significant trunk neuromuscular control improvements in the cLBP patients before and after a muscle fatigue protocol. Muscle vibration stimulation during motor control exercises is likely to influence motor adaptation and could be considered in the treatment of cLBP. Further work is needed to clearly identify at what levels of the sensorimotor system these gains are achievable.  相似文献

Effects of conventional endurance (CE) exercise and essential amino acid (EAA) supplementation on protein turnover are well described. Protein turnover responses to weighted endurance exercise (i.e., load carriage, LC) and EAA may differ from CE, because the mechanical forces and contractile properties of LC and CE likely differ. This study examined muscle protein synthesis (MPS) and whole-body protein turnover in response to LC and CE, with and without EAA supplementation, using stable isotope amino acid tracer infusions. Forty adults (mean ± SD, 22 ± 4 y, 80 ± 10 kg, VO2peak 4.0 ± 0.5 L∙min-1) were randomly assigned to perform 90 min, absolute intensity-matched (2.2 ± 0.1 VO2 L∙m-1) LC (performed on a treadmill wearing a vest equal to 30% of individual body mass, mean ± SD load carried 24 ± 3 kg) or CE (cycle ergometry performed at the same absolute VO2 as LC) exercise, during which EAA (10 g EAA, 3.6 g leucine) or control (CON, non-nutritive) drinks were consumed. Mixed-muscle and myofibrillar MPS were higher during exercise for LC than CE (mode main effect, P < 0.05), independent of dietary treatment. EAA enhanced mixed-muscle and sarcoplasmic MPS during exercise, regardless of mode (drink main effect, P < 0.05). Mixed-muscle and sarcoplasmic MPS were higher in recovery for LC than CE (mode main effect, P < 0.05). No other differences or interactions (mode x drink) were observed. However, EAA attenuated whole-body protein breakdown, increased amino acid oxidation, and enhanced net protein balance in recovery compared to CON, regardless of exercise mode (P < 0.05). These data show that, although whole-body protein turnover responses to absolute VO2-matched LC and CE are the same, LC elicited a greater muscle protein synthetic response than CE.  相似文献

The second harmonic generation (SHG) signal intensity sourced from skeletal muscle myosin II strongly depends on the polarization of the incident laser beam relative to the muscle fiber axis. This dependence is related to the second-order susceptibility χ(2), which can be described by a single component ratio γ under generally assumed symmetries. We precisely extracted γ from SHG polarization dependence curves with an extended focal field model. In murine myofibrillar preparations, we have found two distinct polarization dependencies: With the actomyosin system in the rigor state, γrig has a mean value of γrig = 0.52 (SD = 0.04, n = 55); in a relaxed state where myosin is not bound to actin, γrel has a mean value of γrel = 0.24 (SD = 0.07, n = 70). We observed a similar value in an activated state where the myosin power stroke was pharmacologically inhibited using N-benzyl-p-toluene sulfonamide. In summary, different actomyosin states can be visualized noninvasively with SHG microscopy. Specifically, SHG even allows us to distinguish different actin-bound states of myosin II using γ as a parameter.  相似文献

A new dimeric dihydrochalcone, rel-(1β,2α)-di-(2,4-dihydroxybenzoyl)-rel-(3β,4α)-di-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-cyclobutane, accompanied by its apparent precursor, the known chalcone isoliquiritigenin, have been isolated from the roots of Agapanthus africanus (Liliaceae). The structure is based on spectroscopic methods including extensive NMR analyses, mass spectrometry and circular dichroism. Conclusions regarding the structure and relative configuration are supported by synthesis of the dimeric dihydrochalcone via a pericyclic [π2s + π2s] photocyclo-addition of the corresponding chalcone and consideration of the molecular symmetry involved.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to investigate the effects of age-related sarcopenia on the time and frequency domain properties of lower extremity muscles’ electromyographic and mechanomyographic activities. Healthy elderly (n=10, 64.5±4.5 yr) and young (n=10, 22.6±2.8 yr) were recruited as participants. Participants’ lean thigh volumes (LTV) and 1 RM (one repetition maximum) leg strength of quadriceps and maximum speed knee extension with different load levels (45%, 60% and 75% 1 RM) were recorded. The root mean square (RMS) and the mean frequency (MF) of the surface electromyography (EMGRMS, EMGMF) and mechanomyography (MMGRMS, MMGMF) signals were collected at vastus lateralis during concentric contraction with different intensity levels. Compared to the young, the elderly had significantly less LTV, absolute and relative maximal force, as well as absolute and relative maximal power (p<.05). EMGMF of the elderly and the young increased monotonically from 45% to 75% 1 RM testing conditions. While the MMGRMS of the young increased with testing intensities, the MMGRMS of the elderly increased only from 45% to 60% but leveled off from 60% to 75% 1 RM testing conditions. The results indicate the declines of muscle mass, force and power production capacity with aging. The observations could be explained by neuromuscular performance and change of MU activation patterns may result from age-related sarcopenia. Aging affected muscle power more than muscle strength, which could be due to fast fiber reduction. This is supported by our observations that the MMGRMS differences between the young and the elderly across all three intensity level where EMGRMS was only different at the greatest intensity. We suggest that MMG could be used as an important measurement in studying muscle contraction in age-related sarcopenia.  相似文献

A revised key-factor analysis was presented for analyzing the temporal changes in the ratio of insect absolute number to plant resource. Ten data sets for 5 insect species were then analyzed. In this key-factor analysis, the key factor is defined as the factor contributing highly to between-year variation inR r , the log rate of the inter-year change of the insect-plant ratio. The yearly change of plant resource was handled as a separate factor, expressed byr pl , log ratio of plant resource in yearn to plant resource in yearn+1. The following was revealed: 1) In 7 of the 10 data sets examined,r pl influenced variations ofR r ; in particular in 3 casesr pl was the main key factor. 2) Generation-to-generation fluctuations of absolute insect densities showed density dependence in 4 cases, while those of insect-plant ratios, in 8 cases. 3) The Royama model or a linear model, explained well the relationship between log insect-plant ratio (X r ) andR r and the relationship betweenX r and log yearly change rate of absolute insect density (R abs ). However, in the 7 cases in whichr pl was a critical factor for variations ofR r , with, increase ofX r ,R r showed a steeper, decrease around the equilibrium point (the point for whichR r is 0) thanR abs . This occurred becauser pl tended to be negatively correlated withX r . Consequently, in two casesX r fluctuated cyclicly or chaotically although without the changes in plant resource, fluctuations ofX r would be damped oscillations approaching equilibrium.  相似文献

Objectives:

Muscle mass and muscle power considerably decline with aging. The aim of the present study was to determine the association between muscular function using mechanography and sarcopenia, falls and impairment in the activities of daily living (ADL) in a sample of 293 community-dwelling women and men aged 60-85 years in Berlin, Germany.

Methods:

Muscle function was determined by muscle power per body mass in vertical countermovement jumps (2LJPrel) and the chair rising test (CRTPrel) on a force plate. Sarcopenia status was assessed by estimating appendicular muscle mass with dual-X-ray absorptiometry. Self-reported ADL impairment and falls in the last 12 months were determined.

Results:

ADL impairment was significantly correlated with all performance tests but not with muscle mass. The 2LJPrel (OR 0.88, 95%-CI 0.79-0.98), the Esslinger Fitness Index (EFI) (OR 0.97, 95%-CI 0.94-1.00) and the maximal velocity of the CRT (OR 0.70, 95%-CI 0.53-0.93) remained significant correlates for sarcopenia independent of age in men but not in women. The EFI could differentiate female individuals who had past fall events (OR 0.96, 95%-CI 0.93-0.98).

Conclusion:

The results of the present study highlight the importance of assessing muscle power in older individuals as a relevant correlate for functional decline.  相似文献

Although older people are particularly liable to sarcopenia, limited research is available on beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate (HMB) supplementation in this population, particularly in healthy subjects. In this parallel-group, randomized, controlled, open-label trial, we aimed to evaluate whether an oral supplement containing 1.5 g of calcium HMB for 8 weeks could improve physical performance and muscle strength parameters in a group of community-dwelling healthy older women. Eighty healthy women attending a twice-weekly mild fitness program were divided into two equal groups of 40, and 32 of the treated women and 33 control completed the study. We considered a change in the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) score as the primary outcome and changes in the peak torque (PT) isometric and isokinetic strength of the lower limbs, 6-minute walking test (6MWT), handgrip strength and endurance as secondary outcomes. Body composition was assessed with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and peripheral quantitative computerized tomography (pQCT). The mean difference between the two groups on pre-post change were finally calculated (delta) for each outcome. After 8 weeks, there were no significant differences between the groups’ SPPB, handgrip strength or DXA parameters. The group treated with HMB scored significantly better than the control group for PT isokinetic flexion (delta = 1.56±1.56 Nm; p = 0.03) and extension (delta = 3.32±2.61 Nm; p = 0.03), PT isometric strength (delta = 9.74±3.90 Nm; p = 0.02), 6MWT (delta = 7.67±8.29 m; p = 0.04), handgrip endurance (delta = 21.41±16.28 s; p = 0.02), and muscle density assessed with pQCT. No serious adverse effects were reported in either group. In conclusion, a nutritional supplement containing 1.5 g of calcium HMB for 8 weeks in healthy elderly women had no significant effects on SPPB, but did significantly improve several muscle strength and physical performance parameters.

Purposes

The first objective was to propose a new model representing the balance level of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) using Principal Components Analysis (PCA); and the second objective was to use the results from the PCA recorded by regression method to construct and validate summative scales of the standardized values of the index, which may be useful to facilitate a balance assessment in adults with IDD.

Methods

A total of 801 individuals with IDD (509 males) mean 33.1±8.5 years old, were recruited from Special Olympic Games in Spain 2009 to 2012. The participants performed the following tests: the timed-stand test, the single leg stance test with open and closed eyes, the Functional Reach Test, the Expanded Timed-Get-up-and-Go Test. Data was analyzed using principal components analysis (PCA) with Oblimin rotation and Kaiser normalization. We examined the construct validity of our proposed two-factor model underlying balance for adults with IDD. The scores from PCA were recorded by regression method and were standardized.

Results

The Component Plot and Rotated Space indicated that a two-factor solution (Dynamic and Static Balance components) was optimal. The PCA with direct Oblimin rotation revealed a satisfactory percentage of total variance explained by the two factors: 51.6 and 21.4%, respectively. The median score standardized for component dynamic and static of the balance index for adults with IDD is shown how references values.

Conclusions

Our study may lead to improvements in the understanding and assessment of balance in adults with IDD. First, it confirms that a two-factor model may underlie the balance construct, and second, it provides an index that may be useful for identifying the balance level for adults with IDD.  相似文献

Aim Spatial patterns of phylogenetic diversity (PD) aid our ability to discern diversification rate mechanisms underlying hypotheses for the large‐scale distribution of biodiversity. We develop a predictive framework for the way in which spatial patterns of PD vary with those of species richness, depending on the balance between speciation and extinction rates. Within this framework, diversification processes thought to underlie the productive energy, ambient energy, topographic variability and habitat variety hypotheses predict that gradients of increase in species richness will be associated with: (1) decreasing extinction rates where driven by productive energy, hence increasing relative PD (i.e. PD controlling for species richness, or PDrel); (2) a similar positive relationship between ambient energy and PDrel; (3) increasing speciation rates where driven by topographic variability, hence decreasing PDrel; and (4) no consistent relationship between PDrel and habitat variety when driven by the latter. We test these predictions using distributional data on parrots. Location Neotropical, Afrotropical, Indo‐Malayan and Australasian realms. Methods Spatial models were used to test the predictions. Results Globally, a positive association between productive energy and PDrel confirms prediction (1). However, within realms, hump‐shaped relationships suggest the importance of decreasing extinction rates up to a threshold level of productive energy, and the increasing importance of speciation rates thereafter. Ambient energy is positively associated with PDrel in Australasia, Indo‐Malaya, and globally, supporting prediction (2). However, this is driven by the coincidence of highest PDrel in areas of high ambient energy and intermediate productive energy (i.e. in seasonal tropical environments), which may be characterized by relatively low speciation and extinction rates. In the Neotropics, increasing topographic variability is associated with decreasing PDrel and increasing species richness, suggesting an increasing gradient of speciation, supporting prediction (3). Elsewhere, the signal of this mechanism may be obscured by collinearities with energy gradients. The lack of an overall relationship between habitat diversity and PDrel confirms prediction (4). Main conclusions Spatial patterns of PDrel in relation to environmental gradients may be sensitive to collinearities among those gradients. Nevertheless, patterns emerge which have implications for the relative importance of speciation and extinction processes in generating latitudinal diversity gradients.  相似文献

The flexed-arm hang (FAH) has been used to assess arm and shoulder girdle strength for 35 years despite little evidence to support its use. The purpose of this study was to determine what muscular fitness component, if any, was related to the FAH. The traditional overgrip chin-above-bar test and 5 different variations were compared with absolute strength (1 repetition maximum [1RM] lat pull down), relative strength (1RM.mass(-1)), and muscle endurance (repetitions to failure at 70% of the 1RM). Sixty college-age women volunteered for the study. Relationships were examined using Pearson Product Moment Correlation. No significant relationship was found between any of the FAH variations and absolute strength or muscle endurance; however, all FAH variations correlated significantly with relative strength (1RM.mass(-1)). The strongest relationship was with the undergrip FAH timed to 90 degrees of elbow extension (r = 0.72). Investigators concluded that the FAH is a test of weight-relative muscular strength and appears unrelated to absolute strength or muscle endurance.  相似文献

The present study investigated the validity of a simplified muscle volume assessment that uses only the maximum anatomical cross-sectional area (ACSAmax), the muscle length (LM) and a muscle-specific shape factor for muscle volume calculation ( Albracht et al., 2008, J Biomech 41, 2211–2218). The validation on the example of the triceps surae (TS) muscles was conducted in two steps. First LM, ACSAmax, muscle volume and shape factor were calculated from magnet resonance image muscle reconstructions of the soleus (SO), gastrocnemius medialis (GM) and lateralis (GL) of a group of untrained individuals (n=13), endurance (n=9) and strength trained (n=10) athletes. Though there were significant differences in the muscle dimensions, the shape factors were similar across groups and were in average 0.497±0.026, 0.596±0.030, and 0.556±0.041 for the SO, GM and GL respectively. In a second step, the shape factors were applied to an independent recreationally active group (n=21) to compare the muscle volume assessed by the simplified method to the results from whole muscle reconstructions. There were no significant differences between the volumes assessed by the two methods. In conclusion, assessing TS muscle volume on the basis of the reported shape factors is valid across populations and the root mean square differences to whole muscle reconstruction of 7.9%, 4.8% and 8.3% for SO, GM and GL show that the simplified method is sensitive enough to detect changes in muscle volume in the context of degeneration, atrophy or hypertrophy.  相似文献
