The faviid corals, Favites chinensis and Goniastrea aspera are widely distributed in the Indo-Pacific region. Both corals are hermaphroditic broadcast spawners, but G. aspera is also known to brood planula larvae in Okinawa. This study investigated the temporal settlement patterns of planula larvae of the scleractinian corals F. chinensis and G. aspera that developed from spawned gametes, and planula release and settlement of brooded larvae of G. aspera from Okinawa, Japan. Some of the broadcast-spawned larvae of F. chinensis and G. aspera had very short pre-competency periods of 1–2 and 2–3 days after spawning, and relatively long maximum settlement-competency periods of 56–63 and 63–70 days after spawning, respectively. These pre-competency periods are among the shortest reported for larvae of broadcast spawning coral species, and appear to be negatively correlated with seawater temperature. F. chinensis larvae tended to settle rapidly with 34–39% of larvae settling in the first week after spawning, while broadcast-spawned G. aspera larvae had a slower settlement pattern with 11–15% of larvae settling in the first week after spawning. Brooded larvae of G. aspera settled more rapidly, with settlement rates of 27–31% within the first 24 h and 45–65% within the first week after the start of the experiment. The production of planula larvae with rapid settlement capabilities may enable F. chinensis and G. aspera to establish and maintain populations in shallow reef sites at Okinawa. The release of the brooded planulae for up to 2 months may explain why G. aspera is locally more dominant on shallow reefs in Okinawa than F. chinensis. On a broader scale, the longer settlement competency periods of some of the broadcast-spawned larvae of these species increase their potential for longer-distance dispersal and may partly explain the wide biogeographic distribution of these species in the Indo-Pacific region.  相似文献

The microstructure of otoliths was used to examine the relationship among timing of parturition, duration of planktonic stage, and temporal patterns of settlement in young-of-the-year (YOY) Sebastes inermis collected during the settlement seasons of 1998–2001 in a seagrass bed at the northwestern coast of Japan. Parturition occurred in winter, predominantly around the new and full moons, and parturition dates were distributed mainly from early January to late February. In the 4 years YOY S. inermis settled into distinctive groups at early spring, synchronized mainly to a semi-lunar cycle at new and full moon phases; except for 1998, in which settlement occurred around the first and third quarter moons. In all years settlers extruded earlier in the parturition season encompassed the first settlement groups that appeared in the bed and vice versa. Planktonic period ranged from 53 to 113 days, and its mean values varied significantly among settlement groups and years. Mean size at settlement showed less variability among settled groups and between years (range: 18–26mm total length), which suggested an ideal size for settling and active migration. On the basis of our findings we discuss the extent to which the 'tidal control', 'settlement linkage', and 'competent size' hypotheses explain the temporal pattern of settlement.  相似文献

Settlement preferences of Pocillopora damicornis larvae were examined on artificial substrata. Planulation of P. damicornis followed a lunar cycle and the release of larvae occurred after new moon. P. damicornis larvae had the highest rates of settlement within 3 days of being presented settlement substrata. Cumulative settlement gradually increased from 3 to 8 days, and post-settlement mortality was most frequent after 8 days. Settlement experiments showed greatest settlement preference to cement tiles containing 10% coral rubble. This study suggests that physical cues are important in the settlement process, which may be useful for coral reef rehabilitation projects.  相似文献

The development of the starfish Asterina (= Patiria) pectinifera (Muller et Troschel) from fertilization to metamorphosis took 27–28 days at 22°C and a salinity of 33–33.4‰. The embryonic development was completed by the release of swimming ciliary blastula from egg envelopes 13 h after fertilization. The larvae passed into the stage of gastrula and reached the stage of dipleurula in 35 h and the stage of bipinnaria in 3.5 days. At the stage of brachiolaria, by the 12th day of development, two lateral brachioles and one medioventral brachiole with papillae developed in the larvae. The attachment disk and the primordia of five radial canals of the juvenile starfish became visible by the 15th and 18th days, respectively. By the 24th–25th day, a differentiated primordium of a juvenile starfish had developed in the brachiolaria. The size of the larvae prior to settlement was 1765.4 ± 51.5 µm. The breeding of the anemonefish,Amphiprion clarkii, and the settlement of larvae were observed in temperate Japan. Spawning had two peaks near the first and the third quarter of the moon in 1983, but did not in 1984. The clutch size varied greatly during the breeding season, with a peak from the second half of June to the second half of July. Adult fishes inhibited larval settlement. The proportion of disappeared 0-year olds to the total was higher in 1984 than in 1983. This difference might be mainly due to the difference in the degree of crowding in each sea anemone. The period of larval settlement closely paralleled the breeding season. The larvae settled abundantly around the first quarter and the third quarter of the moon in 1983, and did from the third quarter to the first quarter in 1984. In both years, the number of settled larvae was more from the full moon to the new moon than the new moon to the full moon. The daily pattern of larval settlement did not reflect that of breeding.  相似文献

Due to their habitat specificity, marine parasites present excellent systems for studying the processes and patterns of larval settlement. Settlement of Carcinonermertes errans, an egg predator of the Dungeness crab, is described here for the first time. Upon contact with a host individual, competent larvae of C. errans settled on the crab's exoskeleton and migrated under the abdominal flap within 24 h. When removed from the host, recently settled worms retained their larval characteristics. After 48 h on the host, however, metamorphosis proceeded and larvae became juvenile worms. Additional field studies showed that competent larvae were present in the waters of the Coos Bay Estuary during the months of August through early November, could infect crab hosts directly from the water column, and exhibited density‐dependent gregarious settlement.  相似文献

Life history studies were conducted in the laboratory on the African parasitoid Prorops nasuta Waterston (Hymenoptera: Bethylidae), a parasitoid of the coffee berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari) (Coleoptera: Scolytidae). The female wasp enters an infested coffee berry, kills the adult borer and seals the entrance of the berry with the body of the borer, impeding the entry of other organisms into the berry. The preoviposition period ranges from 3 to 14 days (mean 5.42 ± 0.37 SE). During this time females feed on the immature stages and paralyse fully grown larvae and pupae of the CBB. P. nasuta is an idiobiont solitary ectoparasitoid. Eggs are laid externally on the last instar larvae and pupae. Mean development time (egg to adult) for males and females was 27.7 (±0.37 SE) and 30 (±0.12 SE) days, respectively. Median survival for wasps fed on final instar CBB larvae was 27.7 days, significantly longer than any other treatment, while for females without food it was 2.5 days. In culture, females produced an average of 4.3 (±0.39 SE) progeny during their lifetimes. Adults began emerging at 30.6 days (±0.28 SE) after cultures were started and peak production was reached at 36 days, declining thereafter. Males normally emerged from coffee beans 2–3 days before females. Males usually emerged from 07:00 to 09:00h and females from 10:00 to 14:00 h. The culture sex ratio (proportion of males) was 0.21. The effects of the neurotransmitter blockers idazoxan and phentolamine on the larval settlement of three marine invertebrate species belonging to three different phyla were investigated by using in vitro concentration-response bioassays. Since neurotransmitters are known to influence metamorphic transitions in invertebrate larvae, neurotransmitter blockers were tested to evaluate their sublethal effects on larvae. The α-adrenergic antagonists idazoxan and phentolamine inhibited settlement of Balanus amphitrite (Cirripedia), Bugula neritina (Bryozoa) larvae, and larvae of the polychaete Hydroides elegans (Polychaeta) in a concentration- and taxon-dependent manner. At concentrations of 10?3 M of both agents, larvae of all three species became immobile and subsequently died within 24 h. While cumulative settlement rates were observed after 48 h for B. amphitrite and H. elegans, and after 5 h for B. neritina, > 90% of the larvae that settled did so within 24 h for the first two species and within 1 h for B. neritina. The tendency of the hydrophobic idazoxan and phentolamine to accumulate at solid surfaces most probably contributes to their successful inhibition of larval settlement. This ability makes them particularly attractive as candidates for the development of slow-release carriers in antifouling paints.  相似文献

The continuous changes in the number of newly established polyps of Aurelia aurita (L.) on settling plates under natural conditions were observed from August 1998 to September 1999 in Tokyo Bay, Japan. A sharp decline in survivorship of newly settled polyps was observed within the first few days, however, survivorship of polyps settled in October increased by budding up to 399% after two months. The number of discs in each strobila varied from 1 to 6, however, most of the strobilae formed single discs. The percentage ratios of the total number of ephyrae to the initial number of polyps on settling plates were generally lower than 10%, but the highest ratio of 594.4% was estimated for the polyps settled in October. It is considered that most of the liberated ephyrae originate from the polyps settled in October in Tokyo Bay. This study suggests that the occurrence of ripe medusae with planula larvae throughout the year contributes to the success of settlement and growth of the polyp stage in Tokyo Bay.  相似文献

The effect of elevated seawater temperatures, such as those plaguing tropical seas during the summers of anomalously warm years, on early life stages of reef corals remains poorly studied. To redress this situation, survivorship of larvae of the brooding coral, Favia fragum, was studied in the laboratory, using both short term (48 h) and long term (156–191 h) exposures to 28, 29, and 31°C. Ability to settle when presented with induction substrates and survival after settlement, at the same exposure temperature and after reciprocal transfers to the other experimental temperatures, were also measured. No significant effect of temperature on survivorship was detected after 48 h of exposure, but larvae incubated for 156 h at the highest temperature (31°C) exhibited a 13% reduced survivorship compared to larvae at 28°C. Induction of settlement further increased mortality at the highest temperature (31°C); survivorship after settlement at 31°C was 27% lower than when larvae were simply maintained at the elevated temperature. These results indicate that elevated temperatures are more detrimental to coral larvae undergoing the developmentally complex settlement process than to the swimming planula stage. The endoparasitic development ofG. liparidis was examined in 3 different host stages of gypsy moth larvae. Hatching ofG. liparidis-larvae occurred 3 to 5 days after oviposition in hosts parasitized during their premoulting period, and after 5 to 7 days in those parasitized in the 3rd midinstar state. The parasites generally moulted to the 2nd larval instar between the 11th and 13th day in the first group, and between the 13th and 15th day in the latter, when they had reached a volume of 0.04–0.05 mm3. The positive correlation between host ecdysis and the ecdysis of 1st stadium larvae to L2 suggested that host moulting influenced the development of the parasitoid larvae. Emergence from the host larvae occurred at 20°C after 27 days on average, and coincided with the parasites moulting to the 3rd instar. Five to 7 days after spinning their cocoons near the developmentally arrested host larva, the male, and 1 to 2 days later the female wasps eclosed. Due to the variation in the number of parasites per host, no difference was observed between the hosts parasitized at various stages; however, a tendency for later parasitized hosts to contain more parasite larvae was evident. The nutritional conditions of the moth parental generation influenced both host and parasite development. On the other hand no influence of host age was observed on emergence dates of larvae and wasps.   相似文献

Starvation of 48 h old fifth instar larvae depressed storage protein titres initially for 48 h but retained the levels comparable to control thereafter, possibly due to nutrients obtained during the 48 h feeding after fourth ecdysis. After an initial decline ligated larvae accumulated maximum storage proteins in haemolymph. This is because of inhibitory juvenile hormone titre at the basal level besides the appropriate release of 20-hydroxyecdysone from the ectopic source(s). Injection of methoprene (10 Μg/larva) repressed accumulation of storage proteins while 20-hydroxyecdysone (10 Μg/larva) increased the same. P-soyatose injection to starved and ligated larvae accelerated storage protein accumulation in haemolymph, signalling nutrient indispensability for initiation of storage protein synthesis at the appropriate time of last instar development inBombyx mori.  相似文献

The annual reproductive and the lunar-related spawning cycles of the pencil-streaked rabbitfish Siganus doliatus collected from Chuuk Lagoon, Federated States of Micronesia, were examined histologically. Monthly collection of this species revealed that ovaries with developing oocytes containing yolk were observed from February to May and in August and September. Weekly collection of the fish showed that ovarian development and spawning after the first quarter moon were repeated during the reproductive season, suggesting that S. doliatus is a restricted lunar-synchronized spawner and releases gametes around the time of the first quarter moon.  相似文献

This study investigated the working hypothesis that two widely used organophosphate pesticides; Nuvan and Dimecron, exert toxic effects in Drosophila. Transgenic D. melanogaster (hsp70-lacZ) was used as a model for assaying stress gene expression and AchE activity as an endpoint for toxicity and also to evaluate whether stress gene expression is sufficient to protect against toxic insult of the chemicals and to prevent tissue damage. The study was extended to investigate the effect of the pesticides on the life cycle and reproduction of the organism. The study showed that Nuvan affected emergence of the exposed flies more drastically than Dimecron and the effect was lethal at the highest tested concentration (0.075 ppm). While Nuvan at 0.0075 and 0.015 ppm concentrations affected reproduction of the flies significantly, the effect of Dimecron was significant only at 0.015 and 0.075 ppm. Nuvan-exposed third-instar larvae exhibited a 1.2-fold to 1.5-fold greater hsp70 expression compared to Dimecron at concentrations ranging from 0.0075 to 0.075 ppm following 12 and 18 h exposure. While maximum expression of hsp70 was observed in Nuvan-exposed third-instar larval tissues following 18 h exposure at 0.075 ppm, Dimecron at the same dietary concentration induced a maximum expression of hsp70 following 24 h exposure. Further, concomitant with a significant induction of hsp70, significant inhibition of AchE was observed following chemical exposure and temperature shock. Concurrent with a significant decline in hsp70 expression in Nuvan-exposed larvae after 48 h at 0.075 ppm, tissue damage was evident. Dimecron-exposed larvae exhibited a plateau in hsp70 induction even after 48 h exposure and moderate tissue damage was observed in these larvae. The present study suggests that Nuvan is more cytotoxic than Dimecron in transgenic Drosophila melanogaster.  相似文献

Energy dynamics within incipient colonies of the southern African mound dwelling harvester termite Trinervitermes trinervoides (Sj?stedt) (Termitidae: Nasutitermitinae) were investigated. Development of incipient colonies established from field collected alates and changes in energy content of reproductives and brood were studied over a 25 week period in the laboratory. Colonies were then transferred into the field to study the established of the first mound. An initial four-week egg-laying cycle started within a week of pairing. Hatching occurred six weeks later. Two lines emerged from first instar undifferentiated larvae. Small larvae moulted first into minor presoldiers and then minor soldiers. Large larvae developed into major workers. Foraging began once second instar major workers had differentiated 20 weeks after colony foundation. First instar major workers did not forage but there is evidence of pre-foraging utilisation of soil humus. The epigeous mound was produced after three years. The energy available to maintain incipient termite colonies until the first workers start foraging is crucial to their survival. The royal pair of T. trinervoides does not feed during the rearing of the first brood, the fate of which depends largely on the reproductives accumulated energy reserves. The males and females expended 84.54 and 83.07% respectively of their total energy during this period. Once foraging started, the energy content of the royal pair increased and a second egg-laying cycle began. Abstract

Straight-hinge veliger and pediveliger larvae of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis were refrigerated for varying periods for use in bioassays. Straight-hinge veliger larvae grew to the umbo-veliger stage after 2 months in the refrigerator, but no pediveligers were observed during the 3-month refrigeration period. The average survival rate of larvae in the refrigerator was 79% after 1 month, but gradually decreased with the refrigeration period, and was as low as 22% after 3 months. All refrigerated larvae grew to the pediveliger stage in the incubator at 17°C at the same rate as that of the control larvae that were not refrigerated. Settlement and metamorphosis of pediveligers from both refrigerated and control groups were facilitated by microbial film and epinephrine and inhibited by phentolamine. Thus, refrigeration can be used as an effective method of storing larvae of M. galloprovincialis for use in assays to assess candidate settlement inducers and antifouling substances.  相似文献

The ecdysteroid titres of last-instar prediapausing, diapausing and nondiapausing larvae of Ostrinia nubilalis were determined by radioimmunoassay. In the nondiapause larvae a major peak of ecdysteroid activity preceded pupation by 24 h and continued through the pupal ecdysis. This peak was correlated with head and thorax critical periods as well as with changes in behaviour and physiology marking the transition from feeding larva to prepupa. Nondiapause larvae also displayed a rise in ecdysteroid titre during the feeding phase of development. This rise was approx one tenth that of the major peak and lasted 32 h. It was not correlated with any overt changes in larval physiology or behaviour. The diapause ecdysteroid profile was distinctive in that the levels measured were all lower than the lowest of the nondiapause curve. No peaks were observed in the diapause titres. Prepupal changes such as spinning and the cessation of feeding were not correlated with any increase in ecdysteroid levels. During diapause termination, under a long-day photoperiod, no increases in ecdysteroid titre were observed for the first 10 days. After 12 days individuals began to show ecdysteroids above the diapause levels. Pupation started after 16 long days.  相似文献

Like many other cnidarians, corals undergo metamorphosis from a motile planula larva to a sedentary polyp. In some sea anemones such as Nematostella this process is a smooth transition requiring no extrinsic stimuli, but in many corals it is more complex and is cue-driven. To better understand the molecular events underlying coral metamorphosis, competent larvae were treated with either a natural inducer of settlement (crustose coralline algae chips/extract) or LWamide, which bypasses the settlement phase and drives larvae directly into metamorphosis. Microarrays featuring > 8000 Acropora unigenes were used to follow gene expression changes during the 12 h period after these treatments, and the expression patterns of specific genes, selected on the basis of the array experiments, were investigated by in situ hybridization. Three patterns of expression were common—an aboral pattern restricted to the searching/settlement phase, a second phase of aboral expression corresponding to the beginning of the development of the calicoblastic ectoderm and continuing after metamorphosis, and a later orally-restricted pattern.  相似文献

Natural predation first instar larvae of the cotton leafworm (CLW)A. argillacea was studied in cotton fields in Jaboticabal, Sao Paulo State, Brazil, during 1986. The presence of naturally occurring arthropod predators showed a first instar larvae predation rate of 78.6 and 88.9% after 24 h and 48 h of exposure, respectively. A predator prey ratio of 1∶1 (1 CLW key predator per 1 prey/plant) maintained a level of no more than 1 CLW small larvae per plant. The most evident arthropod predators in the studied fields were: beetles (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), antsPheidole sp. andConomyrma sp.;Dermaptera Doru lineare (Eschs);Hemiptera Geocoris sp., andOrius insidiosus Say; and the spidersTheridion volubile, Chrysso pulcherrima, Misumenops sp.,Chiracanthium sp., andOxyopes salticus Hentz.   相似文献
