Brood size and begging intensity in nestling birds   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0  
Theoretical models suggest that sibling competition should selectfor conspicuous begging signals. If so, begging intensity mightbe expected to increase with the number of competitiors. Thepurpose of our study was to examine the relationship betweenbegging intensity and brood size using nestling tree swallows(Tachycineta bicolor) as our model. Over 2 years, we videotapedbegging behavior in unmanipulated broods of different sizes.We found that begging intensity increased with brood size. Theaverage weight of nestlings in each brood did not vary withbrood size, but feeding rate per nestling decreased with broodsize, suggesting that nestlings in larger broods begged moreintensively, possibly because they were hungrier. We also conductedan experiment to examine the effect of nest mates on beggingin different-sized broods. We found that nestlings with similarweights, previous competitive environments, and food deprivationbegged more intensively in large broods than in small broods.Overall, our study indicates that begging intensity increaseswith brood size in tree swallows. This relationship may resultfrom interactions among brood mates rather than from lower feeding rates to individual nestlings in larger broods.  相似文献

Communication using chemical cues is important for many taxa, including birds, but the use of olfaction for intraspecific communication has been investigated only recently in passerines and is understudied in nestlings. To address this knowledge gap, we explored whether nestling tree swallows (Tachycineta bicolor) would recognize and respond to chemical cues of conspecifics, specifically testing begging responses to familiar and unfamiliar nest and adult odours. For the nest odour experiment, nests were treated with either orange essential oil or distilled water to create scented and unscented (control) odour environments, respectively. For the adult odour experiment, adults attending the nestlings were considered “familiar adults” and adults attending a different brood in the population were considered “unfamiliar adults.” We found that begging responses of nestlings did not differ in response to orange oil odour or water, but nestlings begged significantly longer and more intensely in response to odours of a familiar than an unfamiliar adult, regardless of adult sex. This provides evidence that tree swallows use chemical cues to alter their behaviour and opens up many exciting avenues of future research.  相似文献

Evolutionary models suggest that the cost of a signal can ensure its honesty. Empirical studies of nestling begging imply that predator attraction can impose such a cost. However, parents might reduce or abolish this cost by warning young of the presence of danger. We tested, in a controlled field playback experiment, whether alarm calls cause 5-, 8- and 11-day-old nestlings of the white-browed scrubwren, Sericornis frontalis, to suppress vocalization. In this species, nestlings vocalize when parents visit the nest ('begging') and when they are absent ('non-begging'), so we measured effects on both types of vocalization. Playback of parental alarm calls suppressed non-begging vocalization almost completely but only slightly reduced begging calls during a playback of parental feeding calls that followed. The reaction of nestlings was largely independent of age. Our results suggest two reasons why experiments ignoring the role of parents probably overestimate the real cost of nestling vocalizations. Parents can warn young from a distance about the presence of danger and so suppress non-begging vocalizations that might otherwise be overheard, and a parent's presence at the nest presumably indicates when it is safe to beg.  相似文献

Parent decisions about food allocation are usually based on simple time‐saving rules that optimize their own fitness; however, they can sometimes vary depending on the prevailing ecological conditions both outside and inside the nest. Parent–offspring interactions also become more complex when parents suffer from brood parasitism, which implies that they care for the parasite's eggs and unrelated young. The great spotted cuckoo Clamator glandarius is a specialist brood parasite that uses the magpie Pica pica as its primary host. Here, by filming food allocation by magpie parents in natural non‐parasitized and experimentally parasitized and non‐parasitized magpie nests, we have found that magpie provisioning behaviour is highly complex including two types of feedings apart from normal ones. First, false feedings, when the parent touched the chick's beak but did not leave any food, occurred more frequently when feeding a cuckoo than when feeding magpie nestlings. Second, two types of what we have called coax feedings: 2a) when magpie parents induce a nestling to beg by waking it up by touching it softly with the beak, and 2b) when parents disregard begging signals (always from brood parasitic great spotted cuckoos) while coaxing one non‐begging nestling (always one of their own) to feed it. We suggest that brood parasitism, involving selfish excessively begging nestlings, could have acted as a selective pressure for both false and coax feedings to evolve, as both imply ignoring nestlings that beg too much. We also discuss that these parental responses could have evolved either by a discrimination without recognition mechanism, or, more probably, by a recognition‐based discrimination mechanism.  相似文献

In many bird species, parents usually feed the first nestling that starts to beg before its nest‐mates. The pressure to avoid missed feeds could trigger nestlings to perform in erroneous begging in absence of parents, which has the same costs as begging in the presence of parents but without any reward. So, nestlings should try to minimize both erroneous begging and missed feeds simultaneously. The threshold to start begging is predicted to be lower for hungry nestlings and for nestlings that are unrelated to their nest‐mates, because they suffer lower inclusive fitness costs when depriving nest‐mates of food. In line with this idea, we found that brood parasitic great spotted cuckoo nestlings responded sooner than their magpie nest‐mates when an adult arrived to the nest. Under laboratory conditions, nestlings of both species rarely incurred in erroneous begging when food was abundant, but under conditions of restricted food, magpie nestlings increased erroneous begging while cuckoo nestlings did not. Highly conspicuous begging in cuckoos results in an increased predation risk, which could have resulted in stronger selection pressures on cuckoos to avoid erroneous begging, probably resulting in better developed perceptual abilities, allowing cuckoos to perform better than their host nest‐mates.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Although individually distinct begging calls may permit parents to recognize their offspring, birds nesting in dense breeding colonies where fledglings intermingle might benefit from additional adaptations. For example, if the calls of all nestlings in a brood were similar, parents would need to recognize only one brood call instead of the identity calls of each nestling. We recorded nestling Red‐winged Blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus) to determine whether their calls function to identify individuals (identity call hypothesis) or broods (brood call hypothesis). We used spectrogram cross‐correlation and dynamic time warping as well as call duration, peak frequency, and frequency range to estimate the similarity of begging calls of nestling Red‐winged Blackbirds. We recorded individual nestlings on day 5 and on day 9 of the nestling period to determine whether calls of individuals were more similar than calls of different nestlings, and whether calls of broodmates were more similar than calls of nestlings from different broods. We found that calls of 8‐d‐old individuals were more similar than calls of different nestlings, but the calls of broodmates were not more similar than those of nestlings from different broods. These results were consistent with the identity call hypothesis. We then compared begging calls of pairs of nestlings recorded separately and together on day 9. We found that the calls of 8‐d‐old nestlings recorded together were more similar than when they were recorded separately. In addition, using playback of begging calls from normal broods and artificial “broods” constructed from the calls of single nestlings, we found that females returned with food sooner in response to the calls of single nestlings (with enhanced call similarity) than to those of normal broods. Our results suggest that similar begging calls may be beneficial for both nestlings and parents, with broodmates fed at higher rates when their calls are more similar and, after fledging, parents needing to recognize only one brood call instead of the identity calls of each fledgling.  相似文献

Nestling rejection is a rare type of host defense against brood parasitism compared with egg rejection. Theoretically, host defenses at both egg and nestling stages could be based on similar underlying discrimination mechanisms but, due to the rarity of nestling rejector hosts, few studies have actually tested this hypothesis. We investigated egg and nestling discrimination by the fan-tailed gerygone Gerygone flavolateralis, a host that seemingly accepts nonmimetic eggs of its parasite, the shining bronze-cuckoo Chalcites lucidus, but ejects mimetic parasite nestlings. We introduced artificial eggs or nestlings and foreign gerygone nestlings in gerygone nests and compared begging calls of parasite and host nestlings. We found that the gerygone ejected artificial eggs only if their size was smaller than the parasite or host eggs. Ejection of artificial nestlings did not depend on whether their color matched that of the brood. The frequency of ejection increased during the course of the breeding season mirroring the increase in ejection frequency of parasite nestlings by the host. Cross-fostered gerygone nestlings were frequently ejected when lacking natal down and when introduced in the nest before hatching of the foster brood, but only occasionally when they did not match the color of the foster brood. Begging calls differed significantly between parasite and host nestlings throughout the nestling period. Our results suggest that the fan-tailed gerygone accepts eggs within the size range of gerygone and cuckoo eggs and that nestling discrimination is based on auditory and visual cues other than skin color. This highlights the importance of using a combined approach to study discrimination mechanisms of hosts.  相似文献

Altricial offspring of birds solicit food provisioning by complexbegging displays, implying acoustic and visual signals. Differentcomponents of begging behavior may function as reliable signalsof offspring state and thus reproductive value, on which parentsbase optimal parental decisions about allocation of criticalresources (e.g., food). We experimentally manipulated componentsof general condition of nestling barn swallows (Hirundo rustica)by (1) altering brood size by cross-fostering an unbalanced number of nestlings between pairs of synchronous broods andthus manipulating the level of within-brood competition forfood, (2) injecting some nestlings with a harmless immunogen,simulating an infection, and (3) preventing part of the nestlingsfrom receiving food for a short period while establishing controlgroups. We recorded rate of begging response by individual nestlings as parents visited the nest and recorded begging calls usinga DAT recorder to analyze six sonagraphic features of vocalizations.Our factorial experiment revealed that nestlings deprived offood begged more frequently when parents visited the nest comparedto their non—food-deprived nest mates. Food deprivationincreased duration of syllables forming begging calls, whereas brood size enlargement resulted in increased latency of responseto parental calls. Heavy nestlings in good body condition vocalizedat a relatively low peak frequency. To our knowledge, thisis the first study in which begging rate and sonagraphic structureof begging calls are shown to reliably reveal a diverse setof components of offspring general state, on which parental decisions may be based.  相似文献

Brood parasitic nestlings usually exhibit an exaggerated begging behaviour, which is mainly attributed to reduced inclusive fitness costs since they typically share the nest with unrelated individuals. However, energetic costs also constrain begging expression and accordingly a relation between food requirements and intensity of begging behaviour could also exist in brood parasites, just as in nesting bird species. Here, we tested this hypothesis in the great spotted cuckoo Clamator glandarius and its main host, the magpie Pica pica, by studying the effect of an appetite enhancer, cyproheptadine hydrochloride, on nestling provisioning and development (size, body mass and cell‐mediated immune response). To study nestling provisioning, neck‐collars were meticulously placed around nestling necks allowing normal respiration but avoiding the ingestion of food delivered by adult magpies during ca 2.5 h. Loss in body mass during neck‐collar trials was used as a proxy for energetic begging costs, while the amount of food received during these trials and growth during the whole nestling period were used as variables reflecting short‐ and long‐term effects of the experimental treatment. During neck‐collar trials, we found that experimental nestlings of both species received more food than control nestlings. However, experimental magpies, but not cuckoos, lost more body mass than control nestlings. These results suggest a short‐term beneficial effect of an escalated begging behaviour in both species that would be energetically cheaper for cuckoos than for magpies. We found positive long‐term effects of the appetite enhancer only in magpies (in terms of tarsus and wing length at fledging, but not in terms of immune response and body mass); suggesting that exaggerated begging would be beneficial for hosts only. We discuss the possible effect of begging behaviour on the risk of predation and on inclusive fitness, but also the possibility that our results may be explained by some kind of limitation in the capability of food assimilation by parasitic species.  相似文献

Among various begging stimuli, mouth coloration has received increasing attention in recent years, and previous research has demonstrated that mouths of nestling Canaries Serinus canaria get redder with the extent of food deprivation and that parents preferentially feed nestlings of redder gapes. This study assesses whether the intensity of red mouth colour in nestling Blackcaps Sylvia atricapilla is a signal in parent–offspring communication. This is one of the few species with a naturally red gape in which the function of mouth redness has been tested. Three predictions were experimentally tested: (1) reddening the gape of a single nestling within a brood increases its provisioning in relation to other siblings; (2) reddening the gapes of all nestlings within a brood increases parental feeding rate; and (3) food deprivation increases nestling mouth redness. The effect of nestling quality on mouth redness was also assessed. The intensity of gape coloration affected food distribution, but in a way opposite to that expected: an increase in mouth redness of the nestling caused reduced feeding by parents. However, reddening the gapes of all nestlings had no effect on provisioning of the whole brood, suggesting that Blackcap parents use different cues for provisioning particular nestlings and the whole brood. Intensity of mouth redness in Blackcap nestlings was not affected either by food deprivation or by nestling quality in terms of mass and rank in the nest.  相似文献

Begging behaviour by the young affects parental food distribution among nestlings of altricial birds. We present an analysis of two types of begging behaviour (assuming the front nest positions and gaping) based on videotaped natural nestling feeding in European common redstart (Phoenicurus phoenicurus). We test whether these types of begging support the predictions of two mathematical models: scramble competition with competitive asymmetries between nestlings [Anim. Behav. 27 (1979) 1210] or honest signalling model [Nature 352 (1991) 328]. None of the measured variables of nestling or parental behaviour were affected by body weight differences between siblings. In contrast, both gaping and nest positioning were affected by individual differences in nestling hunger. In agreement with the honest signalling model, hungrier nestlings gaped with higher probability and started to gape sooner after the arrival of the parent than did their less hungry nestmates. Those nestlings with the shortest latency to gape also received food more often. Nest positioning was related to nestling hunger in a way unforeseen by the existing models. The intervals between nestling position changes were several times longer than the intervals between parental feeding visits, and parents preferred to feed nestlings in front positions, so nestlings in front positions were always less hungry than nestlings in back. Hence the pattern of movements influenced the feeding decision in favour of the more satiated nestlings and acted against the effect of gaping. Nestling movement seemed to be caused by the less hungry nestlings moving actively from front to rear positions. Low mortality of individual nestlings within broods that survived to fledging and small within‐brood variation in fledging weights indicated low competition among nestmates. We suggest that there are two behavioural mechanisms that contribute to the equalization of fledging weights in common redstart nestlings: the signalling of need through gaping and the regular turnover of nestlings at front positions.  相似文献

Nestling birds use vocal and visual behaviours when soliciting food from parents. Such behaviours serve at least two discrete functions: (1) to induce parents to bring more food; and (2) to influence how food is allocated among brood members. Playback experiments have shown that vocalizations serve function 1. Do they also function to influence intrabrood allocation, as contemporary begging theory suggests, or is that governed chiefly by the nonvocal components of begging (neck stretching, gaping, jockeying for position within the nest)? We tested this hypothesis using a novel nonsurgical muting technique to decouple the vocal and visual components of begging in nestling red-winged blackbirds, Agelaius phoeniceus. Single chicks that were muted temporarily (1 h) continued to be fed at roughly the same rate as either the same individual prior to muting or sham-muted nestlings in the same brood. Parents reduced provisioning rates by increasing nest attentiveness in response to changes in the begging behaviour of the brood following treatment. These changes included less time spent begging (visual and vocal) accompanied by a reduction in the collective vocalizations of the brood. Brown-headed cowbirds, Molothrus ater, frequently parasitize red-winged blackbirds,Agelaius phoeniceus . The presence of a brood parasite, unrelated to both host nestlings and parents, has provoked speculation regarding within-brood food allocation and parental provisioning. This study is the first to compare directly the effect of brood parasitism on host parent and offspring behaviour in younger and older broods. We videotaped 28 unparasitized red-winged blackbird broods and compared them to 22 parasitized broods. Red-winged blackbird nestling begging appears largely unaffected by cowbird parasitism. The presence of the cowbird in the nest affected neither the latency nor duration of host nestling begging, but stimulated more frequent begging by red-winged blackbird nestlings following food distribution. Begging by cowbirds was unique in two ways: (1) cowbirds maintained a consistent begging effort throughout the nestling period (but did not receive a consistent food share); and (2) cowbirds begged longer and more frequently following the allocation of food. Persistent begging by the cowbird following the allocation of food has implications for the division of parental care, if by doing so the brood parasite is able to provoke the foster parent to increase provisioning, at the expense of brooding. We found no evidence for the adjustment of parental care. Neither the foraging rates nor the lengths of the parental feeding visits differed markedly between parasitized and unparasitized broods. Distribution of food to early and late hatched nestlings was studied in asynchronously hatched broods of the great tit Parus major, the blackbird Turdus merula, and the fieldfare T. pilaris. Food distribution is related to the locomotory and begging behaviour and positions in the nest of these nestlings. Late hatched (small) nestlings were found to beg more often per feed than bigger nestlings and move more towards favoured positions in the nest to counteract selective feeding of bigger young. The functional significance of these differences in the behaviour of early and late hatched nestlings are discussed. It is argued that they are adaptive by 1) ensuring that each nestling survives when food supplies are ample, and 2) by mediating an optimal brood reduction when food is insufficient to raise the entire brood. The roles of asynchronous hatching, and selective feeding which follows from differential behaviour of early and late hatched young are discussed in relation to food conditions during the breeding season.  相似文献

Begging by nestling passerine birds has become a model systemfor studies in animal communication. Although most beggingoccurs when parents arrive at the nest to feed (here called"primary begging"), it also occurs between feeding visits andimmediately after parents leave the nest. Begging in thesecontexts (here called "secondary begging") may have relativelylittle influence on the probability of receiving food, but could increase the overall cost of the signal and thus influence nestlingbegging strategies. The purpose of our study was to determinehow often tree swallow (Tachycineta bicolor) nestlings begin contexts other than to parents with food and to examinewhat factors influence the frequency of this begging. Secondarybegging ranged from 7% of measured begging responses at day2 to 30% by day 8 and was more frequent when the interval betweenparental feeding visits was relatively long and when the timeto respond to the arrival of parents with food was short. Increasesin both age and intervisit interval were associated with decreasesin nestling response times, suggesting that secondary beggingmay be related to the speed with which nestlings respond to stimuli. We discuss possible functions of secondary beggingand raise the possibility that it may, in fact, be an error.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Nestling begging and parental provisioning can attract nest predators and reduce reproductive success, so parents and their offspring might be expected to respond adaptively by minimizing predator‐attracting cues when predators threaten nests. Male Red‐winged Blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus) are well known for their antipredator alarm calls that contain information about the approach of potential nest predators. We examined the begging behavior of nestlings and the provisioning behavior of females in response to antipredator alarm calls of males to test the adaptive response hypothesis. Playback experiments provided no evidence that alarm calls function to switch off vocal begging; nestlings were equally likely to beg vocally during playback and control periods. Video recordings showed that male alarm calling had no significant effect on inappropriate vocal begging (in the absence of an adult), but significantly reduced the incidence of spontaneous calling (in the absence of begging). Adult females responded to male antipredator alarm calls by delaying their provisioning visits. In addition, although having no significant effect on use of nest‐arriving calls by females, male alarm calling significantly reduced their use of nest‐leaving calls. We conclude that nestling and female Red‐winged Blackbirds respond to male alarm calls in ways that might reduce the risk of predation, but nestlings beg vocally when females arrive to feed them, regardless of male alarm calling, perhaps to avoid a competitive disadvantage with broodmates.  相似文献

在育雏期,晚成鸟的子代一般都是由双亲共同来抚育,子代为了更好地存活,会用自己的方式竞争获得更多的食物和更好的生存空间,同时亲代也会根据子代的乞食信号来分配食物。2011年3~7月采用针孔摄像技术录制了杂色山雀(Parus varius)育雏期巢内亲代与子代间的行为,统计了亲鸟站位、雏鸟站位、雏鸟乞食强度及亲鸟的喂食情况等数据。分析结果表明:(1)雌雄亲鸟在巢中的站位各有特点,雄鸟在整个育雏期都喜欢站在距离巢口较近的位置;雌鸟站位不太固定,前期离巢口相对较远,中期和后期离巢口相对较近;(2)雏鸟离亲鸟越近,乞食强度越大,获得食物的机会就越多;离亲鸟越远的雏鸟越不爱乞食,所以站位对雏鸟的食物获得影响最大;(3)雌鸟承担主要的育雏任务,喂食频率远大于雄鸟;(4)育雏期的不同阶段雏鸟乞食强度、亲鸟喂食频率变化很大:中期雏鸟乞食强度最大,亲鸟喂食频率最高,后期雏鸟乞食强度最弱;(5)整个育雏期雌性亲本没有表现出明显的偏爱行为,但雄性亲本在中、后期更偏爱体型大的雏鸟。可见杂色山雀子代的行为和体型大小影响着亲代的食物分配,亲代也会根据雏鸟日龄调整站位和喂食行为。  相似文献

A brood manipulation experiment on great tits Parus major was performedto study the effects of nestling age and brood size on parentalcare and offspring survival. Daily energy expenditure (DEE)of females feeding nestlings of 6 and 12 days of age was measuredusing the doubly-labeled water technique. Females adjusted theirbrooding behavior to the age of the young. The data are consistentwith the idea that brooding behavior was determined primarilyby the thermoregulatory requirements of the brood. Female DEEdid not differ with nestling age; when differences in body masswere controlled for, it was lower during the brooding periodthan later. In enlarged broods, both parents showed significantlyhigher rates of food provisioning to the brood. Female DEE wasaffected by brood size manipulation, and it did not level offwith brood size. There was no significant effect of nestlingage on the relation between DEE and manipulation. Birds wereable to raise a larger brood than the natural brood size, althoughlarger broods suffered from increased nestling mortality ratesduring the peak demand period of the nestlings. Offspring conditionat fledging was negatively affected by brood size manipulation,but recruitment rate per brood was positively related to broodsize, suggesting that the optimal brood size exceeds the naturalbrood size in this population.  相似文献

Individual offspring within a brood may receive different amounts of provisioning from the male and female parents. Some hypotheses suggest that this bias is the result of an active and adaptive choice by parents. An alternative hypothesis is that feeding biases arise as a result of a constraint of fitting large prey items into small gapes. In an experiment with pied flycatchers, Ficedula hypoleuca , we tested for sex-biased allocation to junior nestlings in asynchronous broods and whether this could be explained by active parental choice or by passive allocation according to prey size and gape size. In both control broods and broods with experimentally increased degree of asynchrony, prey types did not differ between parents but females brought smaller prey than males at younger but not older nestling stages. At younger but not older nestling stages, the majority of feeds to junior nestlings were from females, and the smaller nestlings consumed smaller prey than older siblings. However, there was no evidence of active preference of small nestlings by females as parents did not differ in the tendency to bypass a begging senior nestling in order to feed a junior nestling. Provisioning rates by females were lower than those by males when nestlings were young and we suggest that foraging time constraints caused by the need to brood offspring result in females bringing smaller prey than males. In turn, the larger prey brought by males was more often transferred to larger offspring after the smaller ones failed to swallow it. In such cases, 'preferential' feeding of small nestlings by females may simply be a passive side effect of foraging constraints and gape-size limitations.  相似文献
