ABSTRACT

This article explores the fears and desires that conflict survivors invest in biomedicine in post-conflict Aceh, Indonesia. After examining common criticisms of Acehnese doctors, I go on to discuss the practise of Acehnese medical travel to Malaysia and the desirable depictions of biomedicine that are generated through cross-border clinical encounters. Building on Pinto [2004. Development Without Institutions: Ersatz Medicine and the Politics of Everyday Life in Rural North India. Cultural Anthropology, 19(3):337–364], I argue that in the post-conflict period, biomedicine acts as both a site of terror and ‘point of imagination and longing’ that guides my interlocutors' understandings of the changing world around them. The article brings debates about medicine and violence into dialogue with a body of post-conflict ethnography, showing how popular imaginaries of biomedicine can shape the process of post-conflict world building.  相似文献

Plant pathogenic oomycetes secrete a diverse repertoire of effector proteins that modulate host innate immunity and enable parasitic infection. Understanding how effectors evolve, translocate and traffic inside host cells, and perturb host processes are major themes in the study of oomycete-plant interactions. The last year has seen important progress in the study of oomycete effectors with, notably, the elucidation of the 3D structures of five RXLR effectors, and novel insights into how cytoplasmic effectors subvert host cells. In this review, we discuss these and other recent advances and highlight the most important open questions in oomycete effector biology.  相似文献

A biological system such as a developing embryo can withstand many perturbations. What is the basis of this robustness both against noise and mutation? Recent advances in modeling may throw new light on this old problem. First, recent theoretical and experimental work clearly demonstrates the importance of noise and time delays for the proper functioning of genetic networks: noise and delays are simply part of the normal operating constraints. By contrast, sweeping statements have been made recently about a so-called 'robustness' of biological processes, based on work that neglects noise and delays completely. I submit that studying the stability of complex biological systems with such omissions is an unnecessary, inadequate and potentially disastrous simplification. I review the existing alternatives and propose using them to construct a modeling framework that overcomes all serious limitations.  相似文献

Protection from oxidative damage is sufficiently important that biology has evolved three independent enzymes for hastening superoxide dismutation: the Cu- and Zn-containing superoxide dismutases (Cu,Zn-SODs), the SODs that are specific for Fe or Mn or function with either of the two (Fe-SODs, Mn-SODs or Fe/Mn-SODs), and the SODs that use Ni (Ni-SODs). Despite the overwhelming similarities between the active sites of Fe-SOD and Mn-SOD, the mechanisms and redox tuning of these two sites appear to incorporate crucial differences consistent with the differences between Fe3+/2+ and Mn3+/2+. Ni-SOD is revealed by spectroscopy to employ completely different ligation to that of the other SODs while nonetheless incorporating a device also found in Cu,Zn-SOD. Finally, the protein of human Cu,Zn-SOD appears to be an important contributor to the development of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, possibly because of its propensity for extended beta-sheet formation.  相似文献

The capacity to synthesize alpha-D-galactosidase (EC 3.2.1.22), alpha-D-mannosidase (EC 3.2.1.24), alpha-L-fucosidase (EC 3.2.1.51) and beta-D-acetylglucose aminidase (EC 3.2.1.30) was tested among 100 different cultures of soil microscopic fungi and actinomycetes. Two genera of micromycetes, viz. Scopulariopsis and Aposphaeria, which had not been known as producing alpha-D-galactosidase, were found, as well as several new species of the genus Penicillium: Pen. canescens, Pen. claviforme, Pen. cyclopium, Pen. daleae, Pen. frequentans, Pen. piscarum, Pen. simplicissimu, Pen. thomii.  相似文献

Mimicry and extensive geographical subspecies polymorphism combine to make species in the ithomiine butterfly genus Mechanitis (Lepidoptera; Nymphalidae) difficult to determine. We use mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) barcoding, nuclear sequences and amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) genotyping to investigate species limits in this genus. Although earlier biosystematic studies based on morphology described only four species, mtDNA barcoding revealed eight well-differentiated haplogroups, suggesting the presence of four new putative 'cryptic species'. However, AFLP markers supported only one of these four new 'cryptic species' as biologically meaningful. We demonstrate that in this genus, deep genetic divisions expected on the basis of mtDNA barcoding are not always reflected in the nuclear genome, and advocate the use of AFLP markers as a check when mtDNA barcoding gives unexpected results.  相似文献

Results of experiments using phosphatidylcholine transfer protein and phospholipase C as probes indicate that there are at least two pools of phosphatidylcholine in rat liver microsomes. One of these is preferentially labelled with [14C]choline and does not equilibrate across the bilayer. The second pool is labelled with [3H]glycerol and does equilibrate across the bilayer. Our observations also confirm that phosphatidylcholine exchange protein does not modify the distribution of phospholipids or cause randomization of the inner and outer leaflet pools of phosphatidylcholine when these are differentially labelled by [14C]choline.  相似文献

Lentiginosine, a dihydroxyindolizidine alkaloid, was extracted from the leaves of Astragalus lentiginosus with hot methanol and was purified to homogeneity by ion-exchange, thin-layer, and radial chromatography. A second dihydroxyindolizidine, the 2-epimer of lentiginosine, was also purified to apparent homogeneity from these extracts. Gas chromatography of the two isomers (as the TMS derivatives) showed that they were better than 95% pure; lentiginosine eluted at 8.65 min and the 2-epimer at 9.00 min. Both compounds had a molecular ion in their mass spectra of 157, and the NMR spectra demonstrated that both were dihydroxyindolizidines differing in the configuration of the hydroxyl group at carbon 2. Lentiginosine was found to be a reasonably good inhibitor of the fungal alpha-glucosidase, amyloglucosidase (Ki = 1 x 10(-5) M), but it did not inhibit other alpha-glucosidases (i.e., sucrase, maltase, yeast alpha-glucosidase, glucosidase I) nor any other glycosidases. The 2-epimer had no activity against any of the glycosidases tested.  相似文献

Apelin is a peptide that was recently isolated as the endogenous ligand for the human orphan APJ receptor, a G protein-coupled receptor which shares 31 % amino-acid sequence identity with the angiotensin type 1 receptor. Apelin naturally occurs in the brain and plasma as 13 (pE13F) and 17 amino-acid (K17F) fragments of a single pro-peptide precursor. In transfected CHO cells, K17F and pE13F bind with high affinity to the rat APJ receptor, promote receptor internalization, and inhibit forskolin-induced cAMP formation. In the same cells, pE13F activates MAP kinase and PI3 kinase pathways. Apelin and APJ receptors are both widely distributed in the brain but are particularly highly expressed in the supraoptic (SON) and paraventricular (PVN) hypothalamic nuclei. Dual labeling studies demonstrate that within these two nuclei, apelin and its receptor are colocalized with vasopressin (AVP) in a subset of magnocellular neurons. In lactating rats, characterized by increases in both synthesis and release of AVP, central injection of apelin inhibits the phasic electrical activity of AVP neurons, reduces plasma AVP levels, and increases aqueous diuresis. Moreover, water deprivation, while increasing the activity of AVP neurons, reduces plasma apelin concentrations and induces an intra-neuronal pile up of the peptide, thereby decreasing the inhibitory effect of apelin on AVP release and preventing additional water loss at the kidney level. Taken together, these data demonstrate that apelin counteracts the effects of AVP in the maintenance of body fluid homeostasis. In addition, apelin and its receptor are present in the cardiovascular system, i.e. heart, kidney and vessels. Systemically administered apelin reduces arterial blood pressure, increases cardiac contractility and reduces cardiac loading. The development of non peptidic analogs of apelin may therefore offer new therapeutic avenues for the treatment of cardiovascular disorders.  相似文献

Solitons, as self-reinforcing solitary waves, interact with complex biological phenomena such as cellular self-organization. A soliton model is able to describe a spectrum of electromagnetism modalities that can be applied to understand the physical principles of biological effects in living cells, as caused by endogenous and exogenous electromagnetic fields and is compatible with quantum coherence. A bio-soliton model is proposed, that enables to predict which eigen-frequencies of non-thermal electromagnetic waves are life-sustaining and which are, in contrast, detrimental for living cells. The particular effects are exerted by a range of electromagnetic wave eigen-frequencies of one-tenth of a Hertz till Peta Hertz that show a pattern of 12 bands, and can be positioned on an acoustic reference frequency scale. The model was substantiated by a meta-analysis of 240 published articles of biological electromagnetic experiments, in which a spectrum of non-thermal electromagnetic waves were exposed to living cells and intact organisms. These data support the concept of coherent quantized electromagnetic states in living organisms and the theories of Fröhlich, Davydov and Pang. It is envisioned that a rational control of shape by soliton-waves and related to a morphogenetic field and parametric resonance provides positional information and cues to regulate organism-wide systems properties like anatomy, control of reproduction and repair.  相似文献
