We examined seed dispersal by bats and birds in four habitats of the Selva Lacandona tropical rain forest region, Chiapas, Mexico. The four habitats represented a disturbance gradient: active cornfield, ten-year-old abandoned cornfield, cacao plantation, and forest. Using seed traps examined before sunrise (0400 h) and before sunset (1800 h), we compared volant vertebrate seed dispersal, assuming that seeds found at the end of the night were dispersed by bats and those found at the end of the day were dispersed by birds. We did not find seeds from other frugivores such as monkeys or opossums. In all habitats bats dispersed more seeds than birds. In most months bats also dispersed more seeds than birds, except in December when no seeds were found in the traps. Bats also consistently dispersed more species of seeds than birds, although a x2 comparison showed differences not to be significant. Fifty percent of the species represented in the dispersed seeds in all habitats were pioneer species. Cecropia seeds represented a high percentage (up to 87% of those dispersed by bats and up to 83% by birds) of dispersed seeds that fell in our traps. The influence of bats and birds on secondary successional processes is likely to be fundamental for the establishment of vegetation. Since bats dispersed more seeds than birds (primarily to disturbed areas and consisting primarily of pioneer species), they are likely to play an important role in successional and restoration processes among habitats as structurally and vegetationally different as cornfields, old fields, cacao plantations, and forest.  相似文献

Listed as 'vulnerable' by the International Union for theConservation of Nature, the molossid bat Otomopsmartiensseni occurs widely in Africa and, according to someauthorities, in Madagascar. Apart from a few known cave roosts, there are fewrecords of O. martiensseni, although around Durban, SouthAfrica, the species is common and roosts in buildings. Originally described asthree species, populations of O. martiensseni differsignificantly in size (length of forearm) between East Africa and Durban orMadagascar, but not between Durban and Madagascar. Seventeen buildings used asroosts by O. martiensseni averaged 34.5 ± 15.8years old. In the Durban area, bats entered roosts by landing andcrawling. Roost populations ranged from 7 to 29 individuals, typicallyconsisting of one adult male, several adult females and young (bats withunossified epiphyses), suggesting a harem social structure. The ratio of adultfemales to young was virtually 1:1, and among young the ratio of males:femalesaveraged 2:1. Radio-tracking showed that individuals used several day and nightroosts, and foraged widely in a landscape dominated by sugarcane and urbandevelopment. The echolocation and many social calls of O.martiensseni are readily audible to human observers, allowing anon-contact, low technology method for monitoring the local distribution andactivity of these bats. Although listed as a species of special concern inKwaZulu Natal, there these bats appear to be candidates for inclusion on a'blue' list of species, ones showing stabilized or increasedabundance. We recommend that O. martiensseni be recognizedas a 'flagship' species in the Durban area, r epresenting theresilience of nature.  相似文献

Twenty-two nuclear microsatellite loci were isolated from a genomic DNA library derived from Madagascar’s Rousettus madagascariensis. Marker characteristics were determined from a single population (37 individuals) from Fort Dauphin (southeastern Madagascar). Sixteen of the 22 loci were within Hardy–Weinberg expectations. These loci are highly informative with polymorphic information content values ranging between 0.757 and 0.916. These loci will provide valuable information for the study of population genetics and gene flow within this species of bats. Due to the dramatic reduction and alteration of their habitat, data generated utilizing this marker suite will potentially provide additional information for the effective long-term management of this near-threatened bat species.  相似文献

The ability of degraded areas to recover secondary vegetation and the degree of integrity of plant–animal interactions of the resulting vegetation is getting increasingly important for biodiversity and landscape conservation. We studied the seed dispersal and pollination modes of woody species of two 12-year-old secondary forest patches, beforehand used for sugarcane cultivation. Sixty plots were installed with a total area of 0.6 ha. A total of 61 woody species were encountered. Although the study sites were isolated from old-growth forests by the matrix of sugarcane, the array of dispersal modes was the same as in old-growth forest fragments and the percentage of animal-dispersed species was similar (89.8%). The percentage of large-seeded species was even larger than expected (18%), despite the local extinction of large-bodied mammals and birds. Besides the dispersal of large seeds mainly by rodents and bats, more than half of the large-seeded species are consumed by humans and may have reached the study areas this way. Most pollination modes found in forest fragments in the region were also present in the secondary forests; however, no pollination mediated by vertebrates was found among the studied species, neither by birds nor by bats, and a high percentage of species showed an unspecialized pollination mode (55.7%). Due to the high abundance of a few species pollination by hawkmoths was very common among canopy individuals (42.7%), and many sub-canopy individuals were pollinated by large bees (39.8%). The study exemplifies the resilience of sites degraded by intense agriculture, which may still lead to a forest, simplified in plant–animal interactions. Such secondary forest is likely to serve for protection against erosion, and increasing connectivity between forest fragments.  相似文献

Restoration of tropical forest depended in large part on seed dispersal by fruit-eating animals that transported seeds into planted forest patches. We tested effectiveness of dispersal agents as revealed by established recruits of tree and shrub species that bore seeds dispersed by birds, bats, or both. We documented restoration of dispersal processes over the first 76 months of experimental restoration in southern Mexico. Mixed-model repeated-measures randomized-block ANOVAs of seedlings recruited into experimental controls and mixed-species plantings from late-secondary and mature forest indicated that bats and birds played different roles in the first years of a restoration process. Bats dispersed pioneer tree and shrub species to slowly regenerating grassy areas, while birds mediated recruitment of later-successional species into planted stands of trees and to a lesser extent into controls. Of species of pioneer trees and shrubs established in plots, seven were primarily dispersed by birds, three by bats and four by both birds and bats. Of later-successional species recruited past the seedling stage, 13 were of species primarily dispersed by birds, and six were of species dispersed by both birds and bats. No later-successional species primarily dispersed by bats established in control or planted plots. Establishment of recruited seedlings was ten-fold higher under cover of planted trees than in grassy controls. Even pre-reproductive trees drew fruit-eating birds and the seeds that they carried from nearby forest, and provided conditions for establishment of shade-tolerant tree species. Overall, after 76 months of cattle exclusion, 94% of the recruited shrubs and trees in experimental plots were of species that we did not plant.  相似文献

The mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) can serve as a fast and accurate marker for the identification of animal species, and has been applied in a number of studies on birds. We here sequenced the COI gene for 387 individuals of 147 species of birds from the Netherlands, with 83 species being represented by > 2 sequences. The Netherlands occupies a small geographic area and 95% of all samples were collected within a 50 km radius from one another. The intraspecific divergences averaged 0.29% among this assemblage, but most values were lower; the interspecific divergences averaged 9.54%. In all, 95% of species were represented by a unique barcode, with 6 species of gulls and skua (Larus and Stercorarius) having at least one shared barcode. This is best explained by these species representing recent radiations with ongoing hybridization. In contrast, one species, the Lesser Whitethroat Sylvia curruca showed deep divergences, averaging 5.76% and up to 8.68% between individuals. These possibly represent two distinct taxa, S. curruca and S. blythi, both clearly separated in a haplotype network analysis. Our study adds to a growing body of DNA barcodes that have become available for birds, and shows that a DNA barcoding approach enables to identify known Dutch bird species with a very high resolution. In addition some species were flagged up for further detailed taxonomic investigation, illustrating that even in ornithologically well-known areas such as the Netherlands, more is to be learned about the birds that are present.  相似文献

Summary Dietary overlap and competition between frugivorous birds and bats in the Neotropics have been presumed to be low, but comparative data have been lacking. We determined the diets of volant frugivores in an early successional patch of Costa Rican wet forest over a one month period. Ordination of the diet matrix by Reciprocal Averaging revealed that birds and bats tend to feed on different sets of fruits and that diets differed more among bat species than among bird species. However, there was overlap between Scarlet-rumped Tanagers and three Carollia bat species on fruits of several Piper species which comprised most of the diet of these bats. Day/night exclosure experiments on P. friedrichsthalli treetlets provided evidence that birds deplete the amount of ripe fruit available to bats. These results indicate that distantly related taxa may overlap in diet and compete for fruit, despite the apparent adaptation of animal-dispersed plant species for dispersal by particular animal taxa.  相似文献

Bird and bat fatalities increase with wind energy expansion and the only effective fatality-reduction measure has been operational curtailment, which has been documented for bats but not for birds. We performed opportune before-after, control-impact (BACI) experiments of curtailment effects on bird and bat fatalities and nocturnal passage rates during fall migration at 2 wind projects, where 1 continued operating and the other shut down from peak migration to the study's end (study 1). We also performed BACI experiments during a 3-year study of curtailment and operational effects on bird fatalities among wind turbines of varying operational status (study 2). In study 1, wind turbine curtailment significantly reduced near-misses and rotor-disrupted flights of bats, and it significantly reduced fatalities of bats but not of birds. In study 2, converting wind turbines from inoperable to operable status did not significantly increase bird fatalities, and bird species of hole or sheltered-ledge nesters or roosters on human-made structures died in substantial numbers at vacant towers. Of bird species represented by fatalities in study 2, 79% were found at inoperable wind turbines. Because the migration season is relatively brief, seasonal curtailment would greatly reduce bat fatalities for a slight loss in annual energy generation, but it might not benefit many bird species. © 2020 The Authors. This is the first record showing eleven species in seven genera of Furnariidae (Aves: Passeriformes) from Argentina that regurgitate pellets. A total of 627 nests of Furnariidae was examined, and from 84 nests (13.3%), 1,329 pellets were recovered. These pellets were found in the closed, domed nests of many Furnariidae, because in comparison to other passerine birds, their nests were used for roosting, especially in the subfamily Synallaxinae. Anumbius annumbi had the highest percentage of nests containing pellets. Food items identified from the pellets provided important new data on the diets of several species of Furnariidae.  相似文献

Bird communities of natural and modified habitats in Panama   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
Only a small proportion of land can realistically be protected as nature reserves and thus conservation efforts also must focus on the ecological value of agroecosystems and developed areas surrounding nature reserves. In this study, avian communities were surveyed in 11 habitat types in central Panama, across a gradient from extensive forest to intensive agricultural land uses, to examine patterns of species richness and abundance and community composition. Wooded habitats, including extensive and fragmented forests, shade coffee plantations, and residential areas supported the most species and individuals. Nearctic-Neotropical migratory species were most numerous in lowland forest fragments, shade coffee, and residential areas. Introduced Pinus caribbea and sugar cane plantations supported the fewest species compared to all other habitats. Cattle pastures left fallow for less than two years supported more than twice as many total species as actively grazed pastures, such that species richness in fallow pastures was similar to that found in wooded habitats. Community similarities were relatively low among all habitat types (none exceeding the observed 65% similarity between extensive and fragmented lowland forests), but communities in shade coffee and residential areas were 43% and 54′% similar to lowland forest fragments, respectively. Fallow pastures and residential areas shared 60% of their species. Bird communities in shade coffee and residential areas were characterized by higher proportions of frugivorous and nectarivorous species than in native forests. These same guilds also were better represented in fallow than in grazed pastures. Raptors and piscivorous species were most prevalent in cattle pastures and rice fields. These results, though based upon only species richness and abundance, demonstrate that many human-altered habitats have potential ecological value for birds, and conservation efforts in tropical areas should focus greater attention on enhancement of agricultural and developed lands as wildlife habitat. To understand the true conservation value of these modified lands will require examination not only of numbers but also of the types of species supported by these habitats, their reproductive output and survival rates.  相似文献

West Nile virus is an arthropod-borne zoonosis transmitted by a large number of mosquito species, and birds play a key role as reservoir of the virus. Its distribution is largely widespread over Africa, Asia, the Americas and Europe. Since 1978, it has frequently been reported in Madagascar. Studies described a high seroprevalence level of the virus in humans in different areas of the island and a human fatal case of WNV infection was reported in 2011. Despite these reports, the epidemiology of WNV in Madagascar, in particular, viral circulation remains unclear. To explore the transmission of WNV in two rural human populations of Madagascar, we investigated local mosquitoes and poultry for evidence of current infections, and determined seroprevalence of candidate sentinel species among the local poultry. These 2 areas are close to lakes where domestic birds, migratory wild birds and humans coexist. Serological analysis revealed WNV antibodies in domestic birds (duck, chicken, goose, turkey and guinea fowl) sampled in both districts (Antsalova 29.4% and Mitsinjo 16.7%). West Nile virus nucleic acid was detected in one chicken and in 8 pools of mosquitoes including 2 mosquito species (Aedeomyia madagascarica and Anopheles pauliani) that have not been previously described as candidate vectors for WNV. Molecular analysis of WNV isolates showed that all viruses detected were part of the lineage 2 that is mainly distributed in Africa, and were most closely matched by the previous Malagasy strains isolated in 1988. Our study showed that WNV circulates in Madagascar amongst domestic birds and mosquitoes, and highlights the utility of poultry as a surveillance tool to detect WNV transmission in a peri-domestic setting.  相似文献

Poisoning by pesticides is considered one of the primary threats to the Red Kite Milvus milvus. We studied the diet of this raptor in an area of eastern France where the rodenticide bromadiolone is widely used to control Water Vole Arvicola terrestris outbreaks. A high degree of specialization for Water Voles was noted, as their remains were identified in all 119 pellets collected in autumn 2008, whereas other small rodent species and insects occurred in 27 and 9% of pellets, respectively. We estimated that Water Voles constituted 94% of the total biomass ingested by Red Kites under these conditions. Based on these data, the risk of secondary poisoning due to feeding on poisoned voles was assessed. Acute exposure on a single day was not considered a risk for Kites, but exposure to poisoned voles over 1 week represented the maximal risk for the Red Kite; the calculated dose of bromadiolone ingested by a Red Kite was 137 times higher than the toxicological benchmark for birds. A field survey in the studied area detected four dead Red Kites and one moribund bird in autumn 2008 but did not confirm that the cause of death was bromadiolone poisoning. We suggest that professional monitoring is needed to assess the impact of rodenticides on Red Kites in areas where voles are controlled.  相似文献

Aim Three mechanisms have been proposed to explain the adaptive radiations and species diversifications of Madagascar’s biota: the ecogeographical constraint, the riverine barrier and the micro‐endemism models. On the intraspecific level, each model predicts different patterns of gene flow across the island’s physical and ecological features. To evaluate these models, phylogeographical analyses were conducted on a widespread and endemic species of bat, Myotis goudoti (Vespertilionidae). Location Madagascar. Methods In order to reconstruct the phylogeographical history of M. goudoti, the mitochondrial D‐loop and the cytochrome b gene were sequenced for 195 bats from 41 localities. Phylogenetic reconstructions and a minimum spanning tree were used to infer haplotype relationships. The effect of barriers on gene flow was evaluated using analyses of molecular variance and pairwise population differentiation. Mismatch distribution and coalescence‐based estimates were conducted to infer the demographic history of M. goudoti. Results The sequenced individuals showed 159 distinct D‐loop haplotypes, most of them being unique to a single location. Populations were significantly structured (ΦST = 0.170, P < 0.001) across Madagascar, but only a minor part of the overall genetic variance was explained by any of the three models. Shared ancestry of lineages across most physical or ecological barriers was common, whereas the uncovered genetic differences between southern and central‐northern populations were unexpected. Main conclusions Major barriers predicted by the three biogeographical models do not explain the segregation of mitochondrial lineages of M. goudoti across Madagascar. This is not simply attributable to the high dispersal ability of this species, as populations are notably structured. The genetic contrast between southern and central‐northern populations, separated by a zone of admixture, suggests that these areas currently support populations that expanded during the Late Pleistocene. This latitudinal differentiation of populations has been observed in less vagile animals, such as geckos and lemurs, suggesting that climate fluctuations of the Pleistocene had an impact across several groups and resulted in northern and southern refugia in Madagascar.  相似文献

Upland birds that display grit ingestion behavior are potentially at risk of detrimental effects and death from lead poisoning at trap and skeet ranges and other areas where vast quantities of spent lead shot pellets abound. Because commonly cited force-feeding pellet exposure studies deviate from true field conditions, their results may not reflect true risks faced by upland birds. In particular, studies that use new shot pellets and administer more pellets than would be reasonably ingested, critically interfere with the understanding of actualized pellet exposures. In this study, northern bobwhites (Colinus virginianus), a frequent test species in shot pellet research, were dosed in an ecologically-relevant manner (i.e., with spent shot and with no more than three pellets). Notably, the 56-day post-dosing observation period, during which a battery of physiological measures were recorded, exceeded that of related studies. Despite a sustained suppression of a lead poisoning indicator, the data suggest upland birds can withstand spent shot pellet exposures. Data detected a survivorship ≥95%, absence of illness, demonstrated tolerance for extremely high blood lead concentrations, and unaffected blood parameters. In conjunction with ecological considerations (e.g., spatial scale and animal behavior), concern about bird population losses from the incidental ingestion of spent shot pellets is potentially overstated.  相似文献

Surveys and monitoring of 37 caves in and around the Ankarana Special Reserve, northern Madagascar, yielded evidence of hunting of bats and potential disturbance of bats by miners and tourists, and colony counts for several bat species of potential conservation concern. Colony size decreased by 95% and 14% for a colony of Hipposideros commersoni and a colony of Eidolon dupreanum, respectively, when recent evidence of hunting occurred at those colonies and those declines are probably attributable to hunting. Evidence of hunting occurred commonly at the roosts of those species and most commonly at the roosts of Rousettus madagascariensis. Hunting of pteropodids was associated with high vulnerability of roosts to hunters, little forest buffer between the cave and open savannah and the absence of tombs in the cave. Roost sites of the hunted species persisted for at least several years and this regularity may facilitate hunting. This work supports the ranking of E. dupreanum, R. madagascariensis and H. commersoni as species of conservation concern. Managers should consider the impact of tourist visits on bats and of increasing access to caves for tourism. Conservation efforts for the hunted species should also seek to protect vulnerable and unprotected cave roosts.  相似文献

Summary In this paper I compare several biogeographic patterns of West Indian resident land birds and bats, including species-area and trophic diversity-area relationships, the number of islands inhabited per species and levels of endemism, trophic structure as compared with tropical mainland areas, and the degree of faunal simlarity between islands of similar sizes but different locations. In most respects, the bat and bird patterns are strikingly similar. Groups of birds that are conspicuously missing from the Antilles because of the absence of appropriate resources also have missing chiropteran counterparts. Plant-visiting bats and birds are better-represented in terms of relative number of species and, in birds, in biomass, on the Lesser Antilles than on the mainland (e.g. Panama). Small Antillean islands tend to share more species of birds and bats than do larger islands. Stochastic (sensu Simberloff 1978), deterministic, and interactive (e.g. competitive and trophic interactions) factors appear to underly these biogeographic trends. No evidence exists to suggest that Caribbean bats and birds have negatively affected each other's diversity.  相似文献

Numerous zoologists who study diurnal lemurs on Madagascar have noted that they react strongly to the presence of birds of prey. For two of the most intensively studied lemurs, Propithecus verreauxiand Lemur catta, there are few documented cases of raptor predation. Thus, the maintenance of this stereotypic response is enigmatic. Bird bones recovered from cave surface deposits in southwestern Madagascar include the remains of an eagle (Aquila),a genus that has disappeared from Madagascar and that would have been capable of hunting animals the size of adult P. verreauxi and L. catta. The stereotypic response of these two lemurs toward raptors may have been retained from the period when this extinct eagle inhabited the island and is reinforced by rare acts of predation by extant birds of prey.  相似文献

To reduce carbon emissions from fossil fuel combustion, United States government agencies, including those in California, initiated aggressive programs to hasten development of utility-scale solar energy. Much of California's early development of solar energy occurred in deserts and annual grasslands, much of it on public land. Measurement of solar energy's impacts to wildlife has been limited to mortality caused by features of solar facilities, and has yet to include impacts from habitat loss and energy transmission. To estimate species-specific bird and bat fatality rates and statewide mortality, I reviewed reports of fatality monitoring from 1982 to 2018 at 14 projects, which varied in duration, level of sampling, search interval, search method, and carcass detection trials. Because most monitors performed carcass detection trials using species of birds whose members were larger than birds and bats found as fatalities, I bridged the monitors' onsite trial results to offsite trial results based on the same methods but which also measured detection probabilities across the full range of body sizes of species represented by fatalities. This bridge preserved the project site's effects on detection probabilities while more fully adjusting for the effects of body size. My fatality estimates consistently exceeded those reported. Projected to California's installed capacity of 1,948.8 MW of solar thermal and 12,220 MW of photovoltaic (PV) panels in 2020 (14,168.8 MW total), reported estimates would support an annual statewide fatality estimate of 37,546 birds and 207 bats, whereas I estimated fatalities of 267,732 birds and 11,418 bats. Fatalities/MW/year averaged 11.61 birds and 0.06 bats at PV projects and 64.61 birds and 5.49 bats at solar thermal projects. Fatalities/km/year averaged 113.16 birds and zero bats at generation tie-ins, and 14.44 birds and 2.56 bats along perimeter fences. Bird fatality rates averaged 3 times higher at PV projects searched by foot rather than car. They were usually biased low by insufficient monitoring duration and by the 22% of fatalities that monitors could not identify to species. I estimated that construction grading for solar projects removed habitat that otherwise would have supported nearly 300,000 birds/year. I recommend that utility-scale solar energy development be slowed to improve project decision-making, impacts assessment, fatality monitoring, mitigation efficacy, and oversight.  相似文献
