Cercaria sevillana n. sp. (Digenea: Microphallidae) was discovered infecting the gonads and digestive gland of the prosobranch Nassarius reticulatus (L.) (Nassariidae) collected from the Ria de Aveiro, Portugal. Cercariae were obtained by natural emission and were studied under a differential interference contrast microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM). C. sevillana n. sp. is identical to the cercaria found by Dolgikh (1965) in the same mollusc host from the Black Sea, but erroneously named C. misenensis Palombi, 1940, which is a parasite of Cerithium rupestre Risso, 1826 (Cerithiidae). Cercaria sevillana n. sp. can be distinguished from C. misenensis by its tail being shorter than the cercarial body, as well as by differences in the pattern of penetration glands the size and shape of the stylet and excretory vesicle, and its behavioural pattern. An unusual structure of the tail of this new cercaria was observed by SEM; it is characterised by the presence of annular folded membranes arranged as overlapping flounces around its central axis. This resembles the traditional skirts of the women of Seville. Such a morphological feature of the tail has not been previously observed, but may be a feature of many microphallid cercariae.  相似文献

Transversotrema chackai sp. nov. adult of Cercaria chackai, is described. They are found as adults beneath the scales of three species of fishes, Macropodus cupanus (CUV & VAL), M. cupanus var. Dayi (DAY) and Barbus puntius (HAM & BUCH). This species is compared with other known adults of the genus Transversotrema and the creation of a new species is justified.  相似文献

The adult of Magnibursatus caudofilamentosa (Reimer, 1971) n. comb. is described from the stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus in eastern Danish waters. Its larval form, Cercaria caudofilamentosa Reimer, 1971, develops in the prosobranch mollusc Rissoa membranacea. It is distinguished from its only congener, M. skrjabini (Vlasenko, 1931) from gobiids in the Black Sea, by several features, including the thick, heavily muscled nature of the wall of the sinus-sac. The zoogeography of halipegine derogenids in fishes is discussed. The group is considered to have a distribution which reflects the extent of the ancient Tethys Sea: in this respect, the finding of Magnibursatus in Danish waters is an anomaly.  相似文献

A new opecoelid cercaria, Cercaria capricornia XII, is reported from Nassarius olivaceus in Capricornia, Central Queensland, Australia. Combined molecular and morphological data indicate that this cercaria is a member of the subfamily Opecoelinae. Cercaria capricornia XII is the first known opecoeline cercaria reported from a nassariid gastropod. Cercaria capricornia XII can be distinguished from other opecoelid cercariae by the combination of the presence of a 2-pointed stylet, body length and width, and the size of the tail. The emergence pattern for C. capricornia XII in captivity was erratic; rapid emergences of thousands of cercariae were interspersed by periods that sometimes exceeded a month in which no emergence occurred. There was no detectable pattern to or stimulus of the emergence. The molluscan host range of opecoelids is analysed in detail. Gastropods from the Buccinoidea, Cerithioidea and Rissooidea are hosts to both opecoeline and plagioporine cercariae, but the dominant subfamily infecting the Cerithioidea and Rissooidea is the Plagioporinae. The dominant marine host gastropod superfamily for opecoeline cercariae is the Buccinoidea; the family Nassariidae is contained in the Buccinoidea. The range of gastropod superfamilies known as hosts of plagioporines is much broader than that for opecoelines, which may be explained by the relative size of the two opecoelid families and perhaps by indications that the Plagioporinae is polyphyletic.  相似文献

The echinostome cercaria,Cercaria patellae Lebour, 1911, which develops in the limpetPatella vulgata (Prosobranchia, Diotocardia, Patellidae), was investigated by light and scanning microscopy. The highest prevalence of limpets with rediae/cercariae occurred on bare rocks on the upper part of the shore. The prevalence was higher in larger snails and in those which had an orange foot-sole. The cercariae penetrated into other gastropods,Aplysia punctata (Opisthobranchia, Cephalaspidea, Aplysiidae),Acanthodoris pilosa (Opisthobranchia, Nudibranchiata, Lamellidorididae) andP. vulgata. No differences in size were found between metacercariae which naturally infected onlyP. vulgata and five-day-old metacercariae from experimental infections. Inin vitro experiments excystation of metacercariae from natural infections took place as a passive process after a double treatment with pepsin and trypsin which caused the dissolution of the cyst wall. After metacercariae from natural infections were fed to one-day-old chickens, the young adults developed. Detailed morphometrical data on rediae, cercariae and metacercariae are compared with previously published measurements of living specimens. Chaetotaxy demonstrated a distinct distribution of tegumental papillae of cercariae, resembling that of the Echinostomatidae or Philophthalmidae. Scanning electron microscopy of adults revealed short, blunt spines anteriorly, while flattened serrated spines occurred on the posterior tegument. Morphometry revealed no major differences to previously published data. Considering all ecological data and comparing the morphological data with those of previous publications by different authors, we conclude thatC. patellae Lebour, 1911, the cercaria in the limpet, is a developmental stage of a digenean in the intestine of the oystercatcherHaematopus ostralegus and should be referred toEchinostephilla patellae (Lebour, 1911) n. comb.  相似文献

Summary The morphology of Trichobilharzia parocellata from the portal and mesenteric blood vessels of Anas gibberifrons and A. superciliosa from northern Australia is described. The life-cycle was completed in domestic Muscovy ducks exposed to Cercaria parocellata from naturally infected Lymnaea lessoni. Adults of T. parocellata are distinguished from closely related species by the point of caecal reunion in the male, the number of testes, the nature of the tegument and the species of snail hosts. The miracidia differed from all others in the genus except T. indica in having a pair of coarsely granular posterior secretory glands, a pair of apical glands, a papilla on each side in front of the lateral processes and 18 to 20 germinal cells in a single germinal mass. Summary

Diverse modes of clonal propagation were documented in tiny zooxanthellate sea anemones from the tropical Pacific. All were boloceroidids, as indicated by the tentacles' basal sphincter and the animals' swimming behavior. In one species, single tentacles were pinched off at the sphincter, shed into the coelenteron, and brooded there while regenerating into minute new polyps in ~4 days. Within a day of release, the propagules fed on live prey and swam by lashing the tentacles. A similar process occurs in another species studied, Bunodeopsis medusoides. In a third species a previously undescribed mode of replication was seen. These anemones bore a primary cycle of tentacles that engaged actively in feeding and swimming, were not shed, and showed no sign of producing polyps. Alternating with these tentacles were fan-like clusters of shorter tentacles that were relatively inactive in feeding and swimming. Despite the sphincter at the base of each of these clustered tentacles, they were never shed singly; instead, each cluster separated as a unit that then regenerated into a new polyp. Two other replicative modes were observed in similar, minute boloceroidid anemones collected together in the same habitat: longitudinal fission, not previously reported in boloceroidids, and pedal scission. Modes of replication in these actinians are more diverse than once thought, but the selective forces behind this variation are so far unexplored. These prolific anemones may regularly be taking advantage of their combination of swimming and regenerative abilities to achieve dispersal, not only by sexually produced larvae, but also by cloned polyps.  相似文献

Species-level relationships of a complex of six putative acanthocolpid cercariae with ventral keels from nassariid gastropods from Capricornia, Queensland (Cercaria capricornia I–VI) were explored using mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequence data. Analysis of the large subunit of nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA), the internal transcribed spacer 2 rDNA and subunit 3 of the nicotinamide-adenine-dinucleotide dehydrogenase mitochondrial gene indicates that the six distinct morphotypes previously identified relate to only three discrete genotypes. Consequently, the six cercarial morphotypes that were inferred to represent six species and distinguished previously based on morphology and behaviour, are considered here to be comprised of three species (i.e. Cercaria capricornia I and II are considered the same species, C. capricornia types III to V are considered to belong to a second species and C. capricornia VI is considered to comprise the third species in this complex). This recognition of reduced diversity following molecular analysis runs contrary to the more frequently reported uncovering of cryptic diversity, especially when larval trematodes are examined. Phylogenetic analysis of these morphologically unusual cercariae supports their inclusion in the Acanthocolpidae. Bayesian inference analysis identifies three distinct clades: (a) Stephanostomum + Monostephanostomum; (b) the Brachycladiidae and Pleorchis; and (c) Tormopsolus and the present cercariae. Genus-level identification of these cercariae remains uncertain given the current lack of available comparative genetic data on nucleic acid databases.  相似文献

Shell-boring microthalli in Helminthocladia and Scinaia (Nemaliales, Rhodophyta). Spores shed from pink mussel shells were shown to develop into branched monosiphonous thalli, their filaments penetrating into shell fragments. Isolates from four single germlings were cultivated. Two of these produced gametophytes ofHelminthocladia andScinaia; the others have so far only reproduced by tetraspores or monospores. Evidently the microthalli of some genera of the Nemaliales — which are, with the exception ofNemalion multifidum, known only from cultures — are shell-inhabiting and have therefore not been found in nature. The adult algae occur mainly on shells and CaCO3 substrates. Until the beginning of the century,Helminthocladia andScinaia frequently occurred at Helgoland, but they have not been found there for more than 50 years. Their microthalli, however, are still present as shell-boring algae. This study is intended to stimulate similar ones in other genera of the Nemaliales so as to obtain a broader basis for discussion of systematic and phylogenetic relationships.  相似文献

Archigregarines are dynamic single‐celled parasites that inhabit the intestinal systems of marine invertebrates, especially suspension feeding and deposit feeding polychaetes. Certain archigregarines in the genus Selenidium have retained several plesiomorphic characters, and improved knowledge of these species is expected to shed considerable light onto the earliest stages in apicomplexan evolution. Although archigregarines are related to some of the most notorious parasites known (e.g., Cryptosporidium and Plasmodium), current knowledge of the group is meagre. In an attempt to improve our understanding of archigregarine diversity and evolution, I have characterised the general ultrastructure and molecular phylogenetic position of Selenidium serpulae (Lankester) Caullery and Mesnil. The parasites were isolated from the intestines of the calcareous tubeworm Serpula vermicularis (Polychaeta) collected in the eastern Pacific Ocean. The trophozoites (extracellular feeding stages) were spindle‐shaped and capable of slow and continuous bending, and coiling, especially when dislodged from the host epithelium. The trophozoite surface was composed of 19–23 longitudinal folds, prominent transverse folds and a robust, trilayered pellicle subtended by a single row of microtubules, each surrounded by an electron transparent sheath. Putative mitochondria were observed, but they were inconspicuous and apparently highly reduced, a condition that is indicative of anaerobic metabolism. The small subunit (SSU) rDNA sequence from S. serpulae was very closely related to two (short) sequences derived from an environmental PCR survey of an oxygen‐depleted hydrothermal vent system in the Gulf of California, namely C1‐E017 (AY046619) and C2‐E016 (AY046806). This result suggested that archigregarines with a morphology and lifecycle much like that in S. serpulae are thriving in this oxygen poor ecosystem. In addition, phylogenetic analyses of a larger SSU rDNA dataset (excluding the shorter environmental sequences) indicated that the nearest sister lineage to S. serpulae was S. vivax, a bizarre tape‐like gregarine found in the intestines of sipunculids. This relationship was bolstered by comparative ultrastructural data and helped to illustrate that the diversification and biogeographical distribution of archigregarine parasites is probably more extensive than usually assumed.  相似文献

 We present the cloning, structural analysis, and mapping of new members belonging to two multigenic families, the B30-RING finger family and the B7.1-B7.2 family, as well as two genes derived by exon shuffling from members of these families. Eight new members were found and three of them map to the human major histocompatibilitiy complex (MHC) region. Phylogenic and physical mapping analysis allowed us to decipher the evolutionary story of these two multigenic families and to shed light on the evolution of the MHC region. Filaments ofPhymatodocis nordstedtiana Wolle were isolated from a sample of a Texan lake. Cultures were established and examined by light and scanning electron (SEM) as well as transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It is shown that the pores apparent on light microscopical examination are not of the cosmaroid type as expected. TEM examination disclosed that they are similar to those found in the generaClosterium Ralfs andPenium Bréb. Furthermore, it could be demonstrated by light and SEM microscopy that the primary cell wall is shed during cell division. The remaining secondary cell wall of the mature cell consists of interwoven bands of parallel microfibrils. A conspicuous overlap of the semicell walls clearly denotes the isthmus region. The significance of these deviations unusual for desmids is discussed. Suggestions are made that the taxonomic position ofPh. nordstedtiana should be re-evaluated.  相似文献

Emerging pattern of Cercaria tondoni sp., a distome (possessing a ventral sucker lying some distance from the posterior end and approximately at anterior third of the body) belonging to gymnocephalus group (having an oval body and tail devoid of stylets or spines), shows a daily rhythm, being greater during the light phase (0630:1830?h) – similar to that found in a freshwater snail Lymnea stagnalis, Linnaeus, 1758. The peak time of emergence 1230–1430?h has been measured, and there is a high risk for invertebrate or vertebrate hosts and other diurnal animals to acquire infection during this period. However 20% of total shedding in a population of cercariae has also been recorded during the dark phase (0630–1830?h) but there was no significant rhythmicity within this period. An attempt has been made to record cercarial emergence throughout the year, which is of great importance for human welfare. It was observed that the months of April, May, and June are those where frequency of emergence was highest. Implications of this rhythmicity are considered.  相似文献

Abstract. The endemic Hawaiian gastropod Smaragdia bryanae is a specialized marine herbivore that uses the endemic seagrass Halophila hawaiiana as both food and habitat. These small neritids, their grazing scars, and their egg capsules are found year‐round on seagrass leaves, where they feed on protoplast contents released as the sharp outer‐lateral teeth of the snail's radula puncture leaf epidermal cells; the contents of these cells are likely swept into the mouth by the long, wispy cusps of the marginal teeth. Structural differences from the typical neritid radula include elongated outer‐lateral teeth with two sharply pointed cusps, delicate marginal teeth reduced in both size and number, and a compressed central section. Snails grazed on leaves of H. hawaiiana steadily in laboratory culture, and grew and reproduced on this diet. In laboratory choice experiments, snails did not graze the thalli of any of six macroalgal species growing near seagrass where snails were collected, and strongly preferred occupying seagrass. Seagrass samples from five field sites on Oahu and one on Maui showed from 30% to 94% of leaves damaged, with 11% of the total leaf standing area grazed. Snails are smaller (mean length 2.74±0.32 mm, mean width 2.15±0.17 mm, n=217) than the width of the leaves of H. hawaiiana (mean 3.24±1.26 mm, n=790). The snails associate constantly with their host, despite the scattered distribution, small patch size, and variability of the seagrass resource, demonstrated by a sevenfold range in the leaf area index (mean 1.11±0.61 cm2 blade surface cm?2, n=31) among samples. Damage on grazed leaves (mean 8.21±7.05 mm2 per leaf, or 16.5% of leaf surface, n=511) is concentrated in the apical and central epithelia between the midrib and the marginal veins, where snails may access cells with thinner walls and few fibers. Details of the grazing interaction between these extant species in Hawai'i shed light on the ecological specialization of members of the genus Smaragdia to seagrasses over geological time.  相似文献

Pollen morphology of the five Brazilian species of the genus Fevillea (F. bahiensis, F. cordifolia, F. passiflora, F. pedatifolia, and F. trilobata) was studied using light and scanning electron microscopy. Pollen in these species is generally stenopalynous, which is in agreement with observations in previous studies of other species. Pollen is shed in monads and characterised by being isopolar, radially symmetric, prolate, and striate. Pollen is of medium size, tricolporate, with long and narrow colpi, a circular endoaperture and a reduced polar area. The exine is up to 2 μm thick.  相似文献

The accumulation and biosynthesis of cuticular and internal hydrocarbons in the Southern armyworm, Spodoptera eridania, were examined at closely timed intervals during larval and pupal development. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used to identify n-alkanes, monomethylalkanes, and dimethylalkanes ranging in chain length from 23 to 35 carbons. The amount of cuticular hydrocarbon stayed relatively constant during each stadium, while the amount of internal hydrocarbon increased dramatically during the first half of each larval stadium, presumably to replace the cuticular hydrocarbon lost on the shed cast skin with each molt. The accumulation of internal hydrocarbon was mirrored by large increases in the rate of incorporation of labeled acetate into the hydrocarbon fraction. Hydrocarbon production fell to very low rates during the latter part of the fourth and fifth larval stadia. Relatively high rates of hydrocarbon production were observed during the first and last one-third of the pupal stage and essentially all of the hydrocarbons produced during this stage remained internal. These data document large changes in the rates of hydrocarbon production during development in S. eridania and suggest that most of the hydrocarbon produced during each stage was stored internally and then transported to the cuticle of the next stage.  相似文献

Little is known about the initial phases of lissamphibian history (before the Cretaceous), because their fossil record is quite scanty. Only the morphology of the earliest members has been investigated, although other sets of data, from bone microanatomy and histology, are known to yield valuable paleobiological information. In the present study, we provide the first histological and microanatomical data on the oldest known stem-urodeles, the karaurids, from the Middle Jurassic. Three humeri from the Upper Bathonian, Oxfordshire, referred to juvenile or subadult individuals of Marmorerpeton and to an unnamed caudate of undetermined (but obviously non-larval) ontogenetic stage, were sampled in order to shed new light on the habitat and ontogeny of these basal caudates. The great compactness of the three humeri suggests that these salamanders were aquatic. The presence of extensive amounts of calcified cartilage in the humeri greatly strengthens the case for the presence of neoteny in these taxa, a suggestion that had initially been made on the basis of a few morphological characters. This constitutes the oldest known occurrence of neoteny in lissamphibians. Finally, bone histology reveals that the growth of Marmorerpeton and the related unnamed caudate was fairly slow and cyclic, a characteristic of extant lissamphibians.  相似文献

This study identified the bacterial community composition associated with Barbour's seahorses (Hippocampus barbouri). Seahorses and samples from the surrounding environment (sediment and water) were collected from Cantiasay Island in Surigao del Norte, Philippines. Genomic DNA was isolated from these samples, and the V1–V3 region of the 16S rRNA gene was amplified and sequenced on the Illumina MiSeq platform. There were 929 803 sequence reads corresponding to 859 operational taxonomic units (OTUs), which were obtained from the six genomic libraries. The results showed that the most abundant OTUs were affiliated to the phylum Proteobacteria, particularly those belonging to the genera Shewanella, Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter and Aeromonas, which were found to be dominant in seahorse gut samples. The only exception was for the skin of male seahorses, which was dominated by members belonging to the genus Bacillus (phylum Firmicutes). These findings on bacterial community structure and composition may shed light on therapeutic claims of Barbour's seahorses and help in the conservation of this species.  相似文献
