Bonefish (Albula vulpes L.) are a highly prized sport fish. Despite their economic importance, populations in the Florida Keys and Caribbean are in decline, with the early life history undescribed. Injections of carp pituitary extract into A. vulpes during the advanced stages of ovarian development induced ovulation and spawning. Embryos were sampled hourly until hatching into undeveloped, yolk-sac leptocephalus larvae. These larvae survived 56 h post-hatch, when myomeres and eyes were developing but not the mouth. These results inform future research on the reproduction and early life history of A. vulpes.  相似文献

Hyaluronan (HA) has been identified as the principal glycosaminoglycan (CAG) in the highly hydrated, extracellular body matrix of the larval stage (leptocephalus) of seven species of true eels (Teleostei: Elopomorpha: Anguilliformes) and the ladyfish Elops saurus (Elopiformes), and was found as a minor GAG component in the bonefish Albula sp. (Albuliformes). Identification was based on: (1) HPLC separation of unsaturated disaccharides derived from chondroitinase ABC digests of whole-body GAG extracts; (2) 1H NMR analyses of native GAG polymers; and (3) degradation of GAG extracts by Streptomyces hyaluronan lyase. The unsaturated disaccharide 2-acetamido-2-deoxy-3-O-(beta-D-gluco-4-enepyranosyluronic acid)-D-glucose (DeltaDi-HA) accounted for 92.4-99.8% of the total disaccharides in chondroitinase digests. Trace amounts of unsaturated disaccharides of chondroitin sulfate were also present. Two-dimensional gCOSY spectra of the native HA polymer were similar for all species. Proton assignments for the HA disaccharide repeat (GlcAbeta1-3GlcNAcbeta1-4) in D(2)O, based on gCOSY, DQF-COSY and TOCSY analyses for the eel Ahlia egmontis, were concordant with published chemical shifts for HA oligosaccharides. In addition to its presumed role in maintaining the structural integrity and hydration of the gelatinous body of the leptocephalus, HA is postulated to function as a storage polysaccharide in those species in which it is the predominant GAG.  相似文献

The nature and distributions of photoreceptor cell types were investigated in the retinas of 12 species (5 families) of elopomorph anguilliform leptocephalus larvae. Anti-opsin immunofluorescence, light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to assess opsin distribution across the retinas and to associate photoreceptor morphology and opsin content. Retinas of all species were immunoreactive with anti-rhodopsin throughout, while anti-cone opsin immunoreactivity was restricted only to the ventral region of the retina in all specimens. Rod and cone photoreceptors were morphologically indistinguishable at low magnifications; TEM revealed that nearly all photoreceptors had rod-like ultrastructure, with only rare examples of cone-like cells identified in the ventral retina. These results indicate a rhodopsin/rod-dominated retina in leptocephalus larvae of anguilliform eels in the teleost subdivision Elopomorpha, contrasting with the cone-dominated retinas of nearly all other species of teleost larvae. This distinctive developmental pattern shared among elopomorph larvae has important evolutionary and ecological implications, indicating a shared ancestor and/or ecological characteristics that are very different from most other teleost larvae.  相似文献

Synopsis Various observations on the morphology, physiology and biochemistry of leptocephalous larvae of different groups of marine teleost fishes have been brought together in order to arrive at a model which attempts to explain the ‘leptocephalous strategy’ of larval development. The observation that basic similarities are found in the developmental pattern of all groups of fishes with a leptocephalus (Superorder: Elopomorpha) forms the basis for proposing a common strategy within the superorder. Circumstantial evidence suggesting that premetamorphic (Phase I) larvae obtain a significant fraction of their nutritional needs by absorbing dissolved organic matter across surface epithelia has been reviewed. It is suggested that this might occur via a Na+-mediated transport system similar to that seen in various marine invertebrates. Breakdown of the gelatinous matrix formed during Phase I is assumed to provide the nutrients required for the metamorphic larvae (Phase II). This strategy is then contrasted with the more ‘typical’ form of larval development in marine teleosts and shown to differ in several basic respects.  相似文献

Fishes of the superorder Elopomorpha include tenpounders ( Elops ), tarpon ( Megalops ), bonefishes ( Albula ), spiny eels ( Notacanthus ), apodes, and gulper eels; despite highly diversified morphological features, all undergo a leptocephalus larval stage and are thus treated (although with some dissenting views) as monophyletic. Following analysis of 12S rRNA sequences we present results that confirm a monophyletic Elopomorpha clearly separated from Clupeomorpha. Elops and Megalops share a common ancestor and are clustered in a subclade at the bottom of Elopomorpha. Albula and Notacanthus share a common ancestor forming the sister group to Anguilliformes. Saccopharyngiformes is not a sister group of Anguilliformes, as the single species sequenced here is nested deeply within the latter. Neither the suborder Congroidei nor the superfamily Congroidea within Anguilliformes are monophyletic.  相似文献

The monophyly of Elopomorpha (eels and their relatives) has long been one of the most problematic issues in systematic ichthyology. Since established the Elopomorpha based on the existence of the leaf-like larval form, termed a leptocephalus, no one has corroborated their monophyly using character matrices derived from both morphological and molecular data during the last 30 years. We investigated their monophyly and interrelationships at the ordinal level using complete mitochondrial genomic (mitogenomic) data from 33 purposefully chosen species (data for nine species being newly determined during the study) that fully represent the major teleostean and elopomorph lineages. Partitioned Bayesian analyses were conducted with the two data sets that comprised concatenated nucleotide sequences from 12 protein-coding genes (with and without third codon positions), 22 transfer RNA genes, and two ribosomal RNA genes. The resultant trees were well resolved and largely congruent, with most internal branches being supported by high statistical values. Mitogenomic data strongly supported the monophyly of Elopomorpha, indicating the validity of the leptocephalus as an elopomorph synapomorphy. The order Elopiformes occupied the most basal position in the elopomorph phylogeny, with the Albuliformes and a clade comprising the Anguilliformes and the Saccopharyngiformes forming a sister group. The most parsimonious reconstruction of the three previously recognized, distinct larval types of elopomorphs onto the molecular phylogeny revealed that one of the types (fork-tailed type) had originated as the common ancestor of the Elopomorpha, the other two (filament-tailed and round-tailed types) having diversified separately in two more derived major clades.  相似文献

Little is known about where anguilliform fishes complete metamorphosis from the leptocephalus to juvenile stage. Conger myriaster leptocephali in the final stages of metamorphosing were collected from the estuarine portions of the lower Rokkaku River and in the northwest region of Ariake Bay. Three metamorphosing leptocephali with PAM/TM ratios of 0.27–0.34 were collected in the lower river, and five (PAM/TM, 0.30–0.46) were collected at sea stations in the bay. The collection of metamorphosing larvae of this species in a river estuary with lower salinity and high turbidity raises the question of how much these habitats are used by the metamorphosing larvae of this marine eel species.  相似文献

Population connectivity for most marine species is dictated by dispersal during the pelagic larval stage. Although reef fish larvae are known to display behavioral adaptations that influence settlement site selection, little is known about the development of behavioral preferences throughout the larval phase. Whether larvae are attracted to the same sensory cues throughout their larval phase, or exhibit distinct ontogenetic shifts in sensory preference is unknown. Here, we demonstrate an ontogenetic shift in olfactory cue preferences for two species of anemonefish, a process that could aid in understanding both patterns of dispersal and settlement. Aquarium-bred na?ve Amphiprion percula and A. melanopus larvae were tested for olfactory preference of relevant reef-associated chemical cues throughout the 11-day pelagic larval stage. Age posthatching had a significant effect on the preference for olfactory cues from host anemones and live corals for both species. Preferences of olfactory cues from tropical plants of A. percula, increased by approximately ninefold between hatching and settlement, with A. percula larvae showing a fivefold increase in preference for the olfactory cue produced by the grass species. Larval age had no effect on the olfactory preference for untreated seawater over the swamp-based tree Melaleuca nervosa, which was always avoided compared with blank seawater. These results indicate that reef fish larvae are capable of utilizing olfactory cues early in the larval stage and may be predisposed to disperse away from reefs, with innate olfactory preferences drawing newly hatched larvae into the pelagic environment. Toward the end of the larval phase, larvae become attracted to the olfactory cues of appropriate habitats, which may assist them in identification of and navigation toward suitable settlement sites.  相似文献

The superorder Elopomorpha, a grouping which includes all teleost fishes that possess a specialized leptocephalous larva [true eels (Anguilliformes), gulpers and bobtail snipe eels (Saccopharyngiformes), bonefishes, spiny eels, and halosaurs (Albuliformes, including Notacanthiformes), ladyfishes and tarpons (Elopiformes, including Megalopiformes)] comprises >800 species for which phylogenetic relationships are poorly understood. In the present study, we analyzed mitochondrial DNA sequences in segments of the 12S and 16S rRNA genes in 33 elopomorph taxa encompassing all of the previously proposed orders, and 9 of the 15 currently recognized families of the Anguilliformes, as well as outgroup representatives from the superorders Osteoglossomorpha (nine species) and Clupeomorpha (three species), to develop phylogenetic hypotheses based on distance and parsimony methods. Both methods failed to support the monophyly of the Elopomorpha, casting doubt on the validity of the leptocephalus as an elopomorph synapomorphy. The orders Elopiformes, Albuliformes, and Anguilliformes, however, were resolved as monophyletic assemblages. Parsimony analysis supported the separation of the Anguilliformes into two groups (primitive and advanced) based on the presence of divided versus fused frontal bones. In addition, the molecular data indicated a close affinity of the anguilliform Thalassenchelys coheni (incertae sedis), known only from the leptocephalus, with the family Serrivomeridae. The implications of these data as regards the evolution of the elopomorph assemblage are discussed.  相似文献

The fatty acid metabolism in fish is influenced by various factors, including fish species, water temperature, water environment and diet supply. The aim of present work is to investigate the fatty acid composition of yolk‐stage Siberian sturgeon larvae reared at three different temperatures. Fertilized Siberian sturgeon eggs were transferred to the Lodi Aquaculture Research Center of the University of Milan, divided in three aquaria, each containing three incubators and incubated at 16°C. After hatching the temperature was switched to 16, 19 and 22°C. Larvae sampling was performed at the end of yolk sac reabsorption. No feed was dispensed during the trial. Eggs and larvae were weighed and fatty acid profile was determined by GC‐FID analysis after lipid extraction by chloroform/methanol mixture and fatty acid transesterification by methanolic hydrogen chloride. The fertilized eggs had a weight of 23.27 mg and a lipid content of 2.67 mg/egg. At hatching, the weight was 12.2 (0.17 SD) mg and lipid content 1.9 (0.6 SD) mg/larva. At the end of the trial, larvae mean weight was 33.6 (3.6 SD), 34.7 (1.8 SD) and 36.9 (1.1 SD) mg, while lipid content was 2.0 (0.3 SD), 2.1 (0.3 SD) and 2.0 (0.2 SD) mg for larvae reared at 16, 19 and 22°C respectively, without statistically significant difference. Larvae subjected to the highest water temperature showed a faster yolk‐sac absorption. No differences were found across temperatures regarding survival rates and regarding ontogenic development. The fatty acid composition of larvae was affected by the temperature. Larvae reared at 16°C had the lowest amount of saturated fatty acids, mainly due to a lower palmitic acid content, that was offset by a higher level of linolenic and linoleic acid, if compared with larvae reared at 19°C and 22°C. The study suggests that at a lower temperature sturgeon spare unsaturated fatty acid consuming preferably saturated fatty acids, increasing our knowledge of the fatty acid metabolism in this species.  相似文献

Little is known about the thermal tolerances of fish that occupy tropical intertidal habitats or how their distribution, physiological condition, and survival are influenced by water temperature. We used a combination of laboratory and field approaches to study the thermal biology of bonefish, Albula vulpes, a fish species that relies on nearshore intertidal habitats throughout the Caribbean. The critical thermal maximum (CTMax) for bonefish was determined to be 36.4±0.5 and 37.9±0.5 °C for fish acclimated to 27.3±1.3 and 30.2±1.4 °C, respectively, and these tolerances are below maximal temperatures recorded in the tropical tidal habitats where bonefish frequently reside (i.e., up to 40.6 °C). In addition, daily temperatures can fluctuate up to 11.4 °C over a 24-h period emphasizing the dramatic range of temperatures that could be experienced by bonefish on a diel basis. Use of an acoustic telemetry array to monitor bonefish movements coupled with hourly temperature data collected within tidal creeks revealed a significant positive relationship between the amount of time bonefish spent in the upper portions of the creeks with the increasing maximal water temperature. This behavior is likely in response to feeding requirements necessary to fuel elevated metabolic demands when water temperatures generally warm, and also to avoid predators. For fish held in the laboratory, reaching CTMax temperatures elicited a secondary stress response that included an increase in blood lactate, glucose, and potassium levels. A field study that involved exposing fish to a standardized handling stressor at temperatures approaching their CTMax generated severe physiological disturbances relative to fish exposed to the same stressor at cooler temperatures. In addition, evaluation of the short-term survival of bonefish after surgical implantation of telemetry tags revealed that there was a positive relationship between water temperature at time of tagging and mortality. Collectively, the data from these laboratory and field studies suggest that bonefish occupy habitats that approach their laboratory-determined CTMax and can apparently do so without significant sub-lethal physiological consequences or mortality, except when exposed to additional stressors.  相似文献

The larval and juvenile stages of kitsune-mebaru,Sebastes vulpes, based on 50 wild specimens collected in, the Sea of Japan, are described and illustrated, and some ecological aspects of the early life history (feeding, horizonal distribution and habitat shift) included. Preflexion larvae became extruded between 3.9–4.6 mm body length (BL) and notochord flexion occurred between 4.7–7.1 mm BL. Transformation from postflexion larvae to pelagic juventiles occurred between 13–17 mm BL. Compared with other rockfish species,S. vulpes is deep-bodied, throughout both larval and, juvenile stages. Larval and juvenileS. vulpes inhabit mainly coastal water surface layer (usually on the continental shelf), but do not occur offshore region (northwest of Oki Islands). Although someS. vulpes juveniles are associated with drifting seaweed, such clumps are not indispensable habitats for any stages. Surface-to-benthie migration of juveniles occurs at about 25 mm BL. Preflexion and flexion larvae feed mainly on copepod nauplii, and postflexion, transforming larvae and pelagic juveniles mainly on calanoid copepodites (Parracalanus parvus).  相似文献

Pterothrissus gissu is a rare albulid fish that is distributed in deep water off Japan. This fish is known to pass through a leptocephalus larval stage, but only metamorphosed (after reaching the fully grown stage) specimens have been available. In this study, the premetamorphosis (before fully grown stage) leptocephalus larva of P. gissu is first described from 45 specimens (117.2–194.5 mm SL) collected by a pelagic otter trawl in the Kuroshio–Oyashio transition region of the western North Pacific in May 1995. Premetamorphosis leptocephalus larvae are characterized by having poorly developed fin rays except for the caudal fin, a translucent body, branched melanophores beneath the eye, and punctuate melanophores on the dorsal edge of the gut from the throat to the anus. Previously fully grown leptocephali were estimated to reach about 130 mm SL based on the size distributions of metamorphosing specimens. However, the present specimens show that fully grown leptocephali of P. gissu exceed 180 mm SL. Received: March 21, 2001 / Revised: March 19, 2002 / Accepted: April 15, 2002  相似文献

Accelerometry is growing in popularity for remotely measuring fish swimming metrics, but appropriate sampling frequencies for accurately measuring these metrics are not well studied. This research examined the influence of sampling frequency (1–25 Hz) with tri‐axial accelerometer biologgers on estimates of overall dynamic body acceleration (ODBA), tail‐beat frequency, swimming speed and metabolic rate of bonefish Albula vulpes in a swim‐tunnel respirometer and free‐swimming in a wetland mesocosm. In the swim tunnel, sampling frequencies of ≥ 5 Hz were sufficient to establish strong relationships between ODBA, swimming speed and metabolic rate. However, in free‐swimming bonefish, estimates of metabolic rate were more variable below 10 Hz. Sampling frequencies should be at least twice the maximum tail‐beat frequency to estimate this metric effectively, which is generally higher than those required to estimate ODBA, swimming speed and metabolic rate. While optimal sampling frequency probably varies among species due to tail‐beat frequency and swimming style, this study provides a reference point with a medium body‐sized sub‐carangiform teleost fish, enabling researchers to measure these metrics effectively and maximize study duration.  相似文献

Aphidius ervi (Hymenoptera, Braconidae) is an endophagous parasitoid of various aphid species, including Acyrthosiphon pisum (Homoptera, Aphididae), the model host used in the present study. Parasitized hosts show a marked increase of their nutritional suitability for the developing parasitoid larvae. This alteration of the biochemical and metabolic profile is due to a castration process mediated by the combined action of the venom, injected at the oviposition, and of the teratocytes, cells deriving from the dissociation of the embryonic membrane. Teratocytes produce and release in the host haemocoel two parasitism-specific proteins, which are of crucial importance for the development of their sister larvae. One of the proteins is a fatty acid binding protein (Ae-FABP), which shows a high affinity for C14-C18 saturated fatty acids (FAs) and for oleic and arachidonic acids. To better define the possible nutritional role of this protein, we have studied its immunolocalization profile in vivo and the impact on FA uptake by the epidermal and midgut epithelia of A. ervi larvae. During the exponential growth of A. ervi larvae, Ae-FABP is distributed around discrete lipid particles, which are abundantly present in the haemocoel of parasitized host aphids and in the midgut lumen of parasitoid larvae. Moreover, a strong immunodetection signal is evident on the surface of the two larval epithelia involved in nutrient absorption: the parasitoid midgut epithelium and the external epidermal layer. These two epithelia can effectively absorb radiolabelled myristic acid, but the FA transport rates are not affected by the presence in the medium of Ae-FABP. The protein appears to act essentially as a vector in the host haemolymph, transferring FAs from the digestion sites of host lipids to the growing parasitoid larvae. These data indicate that the proteins produced by A. ervi teratocytes may play complementary roles in the nutritional exploitation of the host.  相似文献

Successful larval growth and development of bivalves depend on energy derived from internal (endotrophic phase) and external (exotrophic phase) sources. The present paper studies survival, growth and biochemical changes in the early developmental stages (from egg to pediveliger) of the clam Ruditapes decussatus in order to characterize the nutritional requirements and the transition from the endotrophic to the exotrophic phase. Three different feeding regimes were applied: starvation and two mono-specific microalgal diets (Isochrysis aff galbana and Chaetoceros calcitrans). A comparison between fed and unfed larvae highlighted the importance of egg lipid reserves, especially neutral lipids, during a brief endotrophic phase of embryonic development (first 2 days after fertilization). Egg reserves, however, may energetically contribute to the maintenance of larvae beyond the embryonic development. In fed larvae, the endotrophic phase is followed by a mixotrophic phase extending to days 5–8 after fertilization and a subsequent exotrophic phase. Metamorphosis starts around day 20. The intense embryonic activities are supported by energy derived from lipids, mainly from neutral lipids, and the metamorphic activities are supported by energy derived essentially from proteins accumulated during the planktonic phase and depend on the nutritional value of diets. The diet of I. aff galbana proves to be more adequate to R. decussatus larval rearing. The results provide useful information for the successful production of R. decussatus aquaculture.  相似文献

The morphologically convergent larvae of the echinoderm classes Ophiuroidea and Echinoidea have been suggested to be functionally dissimilar when it comes to their capacities to feed, but little is known about whether these larvae are similar in terms of energetics. Here, we compare the energetics of early development of a tropical ophiuroid, Ophiocoma alexandri, and a temperate to tropical echinoid, Arbacia punctulata, two species with similarly sized eggs. Measurements of respiration and constituent analyses were performed on eggs and unfed larvae of both species. Members of both species showed an increase in oxygen consumption during morphogenesis followed by a lower, static rate once morphogenesis was complete (3 d for O. alexandri and 1.3 d for A. punctulata). Compared to the echinoid larvae, the ophiuroid larvae developed more slowly and had peak respiration rates that were 3.1× lower. Eggs of O. alexandri contained significantly more protein and significantly less triacylglycerol than eggs of A. punctulata. Energy utilization, as calculated via respiration measurements, closely matched decreases in energy content from the eggs to larvae as measured with biochemical constituent assays. Larvae of A. punctulata used 1.4× more energy to reach the pluteus stage than larvae of O. alexandri, and used 4× more energy during the first 9 d of larval life. These data suggest that echinoid larvae require more energy to develop to the feeding stage than ophiuroid larvae, and likewise have higher requirements for maintenance metabolism. Ophiuroid larvae may be more tolerant of low food levels due to their very low metabolic rates, but this advantage may be offset by their slower rate of development.  相似文献

This study investigated the biological effects of various dietary essential fatty acids levels to sea scallop larvae, Placopecten magellanicus. Scallop larvae were fed three diets from D-veliger to settlement. Diet A consisted of Isochrysis sp. and Pavlova lutheri, diet B was a mix of Isochrysis sp. and Chaetoceros muelleri and diet C consisted of the same two species, but C. muelleri was grown under silicate deprivation to alter the fatty acid composition. Pediveligers (28 days old) were sampled prior to settlement for fatty acid analysis, growth measurement and survival assessment. Survival and settlement success were measured at the end of the experiment (day 40). Our results show that feeding regime greatly influenced larval size, settlement and fatty acid composition. Diet A was severely deficient in arachidonic acid (20:4n-6, AA), leading to the poorest larval growth, survival and lipid content. Nevertheless, larvae fed diet A selectively accumulate AA by a factor three compared to the dietary amount. Shell size of 28-day-old larvae was positively correlated with AA content and negatively correlated with eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n-3, EPA)-AA ratio, thus suggesting that these two variables are of major interest for the optimisation of larval growth in sea scallops. Finally, larvae fed diet C displayed 20% higher shell size at day 28 than larvae fed diet A and B, likely in relation to the dietary amount of saturated fatty acid (SFA). However, the moderate survival and settlement success of these groups of larvae might be associated with a relative deficiency in docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3, DHA). This study underlines that the overall balance between polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) needs to be considered to adequately fed sea scallop larvae.  相似文献
