Changes in subsistence strategy have caused some of the profoundest changes to the structure and health of humans. This study aims to test whether these changes have reduced work-load as assessed by entheseal changes. Entheseal changes, formerly called musculoskeletal stress markers, are thought to reflect muscle usage throughout life, although it is widely agreed that they have a multifactorial origin. This paper uses a meta-analysis of comparable published data to plot trends in time by muscle, enthesis type and sex. The results show that agriculturalists have the lowest scores for entheseal changes, with hunte–gatherers next highest and those working in industry the highest. These findings are the same for males and females, for most muscles and muscle groups. However, entheseal changes are highly correlated with increased age and the age distributions of the samples analysed could not be compared. It is, therefore, possible that differences in age distribution of the samples are one of the reasons for this finding. Recommendations are provided to reduce this and other limitations for future meta-analyses.  相似文献

The impact of the fish population on trophic properties of lake water, was experimentally studied in an oligotrophic Swedish forest lake. Biotic changes following fish removal resulted in a development in oligotrophic direction as shown by the drop in limnetic primary production, pH, total phosphorus, total nitrogen and the increased transparency.  相似文献

Numerous studies have suggested that the deployment of attention is linked to saliency. In contrast, very little is known about how salient objects are perceived. To probe the perception of salient elements, observers compared two horizontally aligned stimuli in an array of eight elements. One of them was salient because of its orientation or direction of motion. We observed that the perceived luminance contrast or color saturation of the salient element increased: the salient stimulus looked even more salient. We explored the possibility that changes in appearance were caused by attention. We chose an event-related potential indexing attentional selection, the N2pc, to answer this question. The absence of an N2pc to the salient object provides preliminary evidence against involuntary attentional capture by the salient element. We suggest that signals from a master saliency map flow back into individual feature maps. These signals boost the perceived feature contrast of salient objects, even on perceptual dimensions different from the one that initially defined saliency.  相似文献

Laser Raman spectra of a mixture of yeast t-RNA's are examined as a function of temperature and after total alkaline hydrolysis to mononucleotides; the data are interpreted on the basis of extensive preliminary studies previously reported from this laboratory on the Raman spectral properties of numerous synthetic model compounds. To examine the influence of pulmonary blood flow (Qp) on spontaneous ventilation (VE), we isolated the systemic and pulmonary circulations and controlled the arterial blood gases and blood flow (Q) in each circuit as we measured VE. Each dog was anesthetized with ketamine and maintained with halothane. Systemic Q was drained from the right atrium and pumped through an oxygenator and heat exchanger and returned to the aorta. An identical bypass was established for the pulmonary circulation, draining blood from the left atrium and pumping it to the pulmonary artery. The heart was fibrillated, all cannulas were brought through the chest wall, and the median sternotomy was closed. The dog was then allowed to breathe spontaneously. The arterial O2 partial pressure (PO2) of both circuits was maintained greater than 300 Torr. Systemic Q was maintained at 0.080 l X min-1 X kg-1. Initially the arterial CO2 partial pressure (PCO2) of both circuits was set at 40 Torr as Qp was varied randomly between approximately 0.025 and 0.175 l X min-1 X kg-1. The average VE-Qp relationship was linear with a slope of 1.45 (P less than 0.0005). Increasing the arterial PCO2 of both circuits to 60 Torr elevated VE an average of 0.37 l X min-1 X kg-1 at each level of Qp (P less than 0.0005). Vagotomy abolished the effect of Qp on VE. Increasing Qp affected the systemic arterial PCO2-VE response curve by shifting it upward without altering its slope. These results demonstrate that increases in Qp are associated with increases in VE. This phenomenon may contribute to exercise hyperpnea.  相似文献
