The esophagus of the common grey mullet Mugil cephalus shows a single mode of organization that is common to both seawater- and freshwater-acclimated specimens. A short anterior segment is lined by a stratified epithelium with mucous cells; posteriorly, this is progressively replaced by single-layered columnar epithelium. Ultrastructural features of the columnar epithelium are quite similar in the seawater- and freshwater-acclimated specimens. Apical microvillous projections, lamellar structures, and dilated intercellular spaces are observed. The present study suggests that the mullet esophagus is involved in active ion transport and water permeability, both in seawater and in freshwater environments. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

This study examines the interspecific variability and phenetic relationships in six southern Adriatic mullet species: Mugil cephalus (Linnaeus, 1758), Chelon labrosus (Risso, 1826), Liza aurata (Risso, 1810), Liza ramada (Risso, 1826), Liza saliens (Risso, 1810), and Oedalechilus labeo (Cuvier, 1829). Twenty-three morphometric characteristics of the visceral skeleton and the dermatocranium of mullets were analyzed. The major distinguishing characters were those of the jaws. M. cephalus was clearly separated from the other species; O. labeo differed to a somewhat smaller extent; and C. labrosus was the least distinguished species. The species of the genus Liza were phenetically most similar, while the other species of mullet differed significantly from them. The greatest distances were between M. cephalus and C. labrosus, as well as between M. cephalus and O. labeo. This text was submitted by the authors in English.  相似文献

Two new species of Ergasilidae are described from southern Africa; a representative of the genus Dermoergasilus Ho et Do, 1982 on the gill rackers and one of Ergasilus von Nordmann, 1932 on the gill filaments of the striped mullet, Mugil cephalus L.The striped mullet, Mugil cephalus Linnaeus, has a wide geographical distribution and is parasitized by more than 40 different species of parasitic copepods (Ho & Do, 1982). It acts as host for seven species of Ergasilidae, i.e. Diergasilus kasahari Do, 1981, Dermoergasilus amplectens (Dogiel et Akhmerov, 1952), Ergasilus seiboldi von Nordmann, 1832, Nipergasilus bora (Yamaguti, 1939) and Ergasilus lizae Kroyer, 1963, Ergasilus mugilis Vogt, 1879 and Ergasilus cyanopictus Carvalho, 1962.Ergasilids have been reported from mullets on the African continent, i.e. E. lizae from Tunisia (Raibaut, Ben-Hassine & Prunes, 1975) and Ghana (Paperna, 1969). The present study has shown that two new species of Ergasilidae occur on the southern periphery of the continent, which are described below.Type specimens were deposited in the collection of the Dept. of Zoology, Rand Afrikaans University.  相似文献

Potential trophic competition between two sympatric mullet species, Mugil cephalus and Mugil curema, was explored in the hypersaline estuary of the Saloum Delta (Senegal) using δ13C and δ15N composition of muscle tissues. Between species, δ15N compositions were similar, suggesting a similar trophic level, while the difference in δ13C compositions indicated that these species did not feed from exactly the same basal production sources or at least not in the same proportions. This result provides the first evidence of isotopic niche segregation between two limno‐benthophageous species belonging to the geographically widespread, and often locally abundant, Mugilidae family.  相似文献

Infection of striped mullet (Mugil cephalus) with Aeromonas hydrophila results in an acute septicemic disease. The disease can be experimentally induced by intramuscular injection, skin or gill scarification or by the oral route using pellets purposely seeded with bacteria. The organism was isolated from the blood 1–2 days after infection and from all organs 24 hr or longer after infection. The disease is characterized by early inflammatory and proliferative changes and later necrotic changes. Enteritis and hepatic necrosis are constant findings in aeromonad disease of M. cephalus but surface lesions are not pathognomic for these infections in mullet. Death of infected fish may be attributed to bacterial toxins which cause necrosis of parenchymal organs and soft tissue structure.  相似文献

In this study, habitat use by Mugil cephalus was investigated in the waters of the west coast of the North Island of New Zealand by analysing microchemical composition of otoliths (laser‐ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry) obtained from individuals from commercial fish stocks and research surveys. Results of this study show that M. cephalus at the southern limits of its distribution display highly flexible migratory behaviour with extensive use of freshwater and brackish habitats, potentially enabling them to maximize foraging opportunities. Mugil cephalus can tolerate a wide range of salinities and can therefore utilize higher productivity areas, such as estuaries and eutrophic riverine lakes. Finally, M. cephalus populations across a range of climates and latitudes appear to differ in the extent to which they utilize freshwater and brackish habitats, possibly with increasing penetration of fresh waters with increasing latitude.  相似文献

The sex‐specific daily spawning seaward migration of striped mullet Mugil cephalus was analysed in Palaiopotamos Lagoon (western Greek coast, eastern Mediterranean Sea) in an 86 day time series. The data set included the daily number of M. cephalus catches in barrier traps, as well as a time series of some weather variables. The analysis revealed an important linkage of the daily migration rate as well as a sex‐specific response of the species to the lunar cycle and the short‐term fluctuation of weather variables. The daily migration pattern of females was more persistent than that of males, indicating a possible female leadership role during the spawning migration. Multiregression models described quite accurately the sex‐specific daily migration rates of the species, thus providing a potentially powerful tool regarding the lagoon fishery management of M. cephalus, especially in the context of climate change.  相似文献

This paper describes tumorlike formations in the olfactory organ of the striped mullet Mugil cephalusinhabiting polluted waters of Zapadnaya Bay (Sovetskaya Gavan' Bay, western coast of Tatar Strait). The structure of these tumorlike formations is characteristic of fibroma. The appearance of the tumors is apparently associated with carcinogenic industrial wastes and radioactive contamination of the bay.  相似文献

The arrival of non‐native fishes in the Levant Basin began in the late 19th century. Whereas the presence of most of the 40 non‐native freshwater fishes stem from intentional introductions, either for aquaculture or pest control, the 62 species of non‐native marine fishes arrived by natural dispersal via the Suez Canal. Of the non‐native freshwater species, five have established successful breeding populations (mosquitofish Gambusia affinis, common carp Cyprinus carpio, crucian carp Carassius carassius, swordtail Xiphophorus hellerii and rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss), and seven are regularly stocked in natural habitats (thinlip mullet Liza ramada, flathead mullet Mugil cephalus, European eel Anguilla anguilla, grass carp Ctenopharyngodon idella, Asian silver carp Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, bighead carp Aristichthys nobilis, black carp Mylopharyngodon piceus). Some non‐native species appear to have out‐competed native species. Gambusia affinis may have caused the extirpation of two native cyprinid fishes from the Qishon River basin (Levant silver carp Hemigrammocapoeta nana and common garra Garra rufa) and the southern Dead Sea (endemic Sodom's garra G. ghoerensis). The opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 allowed entry into the eastern Mediterranean of Indo‐Pacific and Erythrean biota, with the latter now dominating the community structure (50–90% of fish biomass) and function (altered native food web) of the Levantine littoral and infra‐littoral zones. The process has accelerated in recent years concurrent with a warming trend of the seawater. Record numbers of newly discovered non‐native species is leading to the creation of a human‐assisted Erythrean biotic province in the eastern Mediterranean.  相似文献

Several factors such as geographical barriers, demographic history, biological and ecological traits may contribute to delineate the evolutionary history of a species. The gray mullet, Mugil cephalus, represents an interesting case of a marine species with a coastal ecology and a cosmopolitan distribution. In this study, partial cytochrome b sequences were resolved for 177 M. cephalus specimens sampled from 14 different geographic sites, in order to investigate the genetic divergence and the phylogeographic relationship among populations at a global scale. Demographic parameters were also assessed. Analysis of partial cyt b sequences showed high levels of differentiation among populations from distant geographic areas as most populations harbored private alleles and showed reciprocal monophyly. Both phylogenetic trees and haplotype network indicate the East Australian haplotypes as the closest to the ancestor sequences, which leads to the hypothesis of an Indo-West Pacific center of origin for M. cephalus. The analyses of the molecular variance showed that the genetic variation in M. cephalus is mainly harbored among populations rather than within populations. The high variability indices (h, π) calculated on M. cephalus individuals pooled together and the very low variability indices detected at some geographic sampling sites suggest that gray mullet populations have undergone a long-term reproductive isolation characterized by events of population abundance reductions which may have favored genetic differentiation among populations.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Myxosoma cephalis n. sp. is described from the brain meninges, gills, jaw bone, crop tissue and buccal cavity of Mugil cephalus Linnaeus (striped mullet) of south Florida. The fresh spore is subspherical in front view, lenticular in side view and averages 14.1 × 11.0 × 9.0 μ (length, width, thickness). The sutural ridge is broad, the sutural line is faintly visible and the polar filaments are coiled 4–5 times. This parasite is apparently associated with an epizootic in mullet. Three species of beloniform fishes from south Florida waters were examined for myxosporidan parasites. New host records and extensions of ranges are provided for Myxidium sphaericum Thélohan in Strongylura timucu (Walbaum) (timucu), and Ceratomyxa aggregata Davis in Hyporhamphus unifasciatus (Ranzani) (halfbeak). A single spore of the genus Myxidium was found in the gall bladder of Hemiramphus brasiliensis Linnaeus (ballyhoo).  相似文献

The seasonal abundance and instantaneous natural and fishing mortalities of six species of grey mullets, namely Liza subviridis, L. macrolepis, L. tade, Mugil cephalus, Valamugil buchanani and V. cunnesius were studied as a prelude for the management of their fishery in Negombo lagoon (7°10′N and 79°50′E). L. subviridis was the most abundant of the grey mullet species in the commercial catches and accounted for 37% of the total grey mullet catch. M. cephalus was the least abundant and constituted 6%. The annual catch of grey mullets was estimated to be around 23 000 kg (5.67 kg/ha); about 40 % of the total fish landings of the lagoon. The seasonal variation in the catch of different species of grey mullets appear to be related to their breeding seasons and spawning migrations. The highest value for instantaneous natural and fishing mortalities, which were 1.04 and 0.94 respectively were obtained for V. cunnesius. The lowest values for instantaneous natural and fishing mortalities which were 0.51 and 0.19 respectively were obtained for M. cephalus. The exploitation ratios calculated were less than 0.5 for all species other than L. tade which suggest that the grey mullet populations excluding L. tade in this lagoon may presently be underexploited.  相似文献

This study reviews published information on Mugil cephalus from around the world, with recent genetic studies indicating that the flathead mullet may indeed be a species complex. Disciplines that are covered range from the taxonomy, genetics and systematics, through a variety of biological and ecological attributes, to biomarker and fisheries studies. The eurytopic nature of M. cephalus is emphasized, with the migratory life history covering a succession of very different aquatic environments (e.g. rivers, estuaries, coastal lakes/lagoons, marine littoral, open ocean), each of which is occupied for varying lengths of time, depending on the population characteristics within a region and the life-history stage of the species. Interpretation of these movements over time has been greatly enhanced by the use of otolith micro-chemistry which has enabled scientists to map out the different habitats occupied by individual fish at the different life stages. The range of physico-chemical attributes within these environments necessitates a wide tolerance to differing conditions, especially with regard to salinity, turbidity, dissolved oxygen and temperature, all of which are discussed in this review. The importance of M. cephalus to the ecological functioning of coastal systems is emphasized, as well as the pivotal role that this species fulfills in fisheries in some parts of the world. The parasites range from internal trematode and cestode infestations, to external branchyuran and copepod parasites, which use M. cephalus as either an intermediate or final host. The value of the flathead mullet as a biomarker for the monitoring of the health of coastal habitats is discussed, as well as its potential as an indicator or sentinel species for certain ecosystems.  相似文献

This study has tested the hypotheses that the dietary compositions of the six large and abundant fish species in the 46 km2 basin of a seasonally open estuary (Wilson Inlet) will differ significantly, change with increasing body size and vary with water depth and season. These species comprise four marine species, the sea mullet Mugil cephalus, yellow‐eye mullet Aldrichetta forsteri, King George whiting Sillaginodes punctata and Australian herring Arripis georgiana, and populations of two species that are confined to the estuary, the cobbler Cnidoglanis macrocephalus and the southern blue‐spotted flathead Platycephalus speculator. Non‐metric multidimensional ordination and associated tests showed that, overall, the dietary composition was influenced to a far greater extent by the species of fish than by either water depth or season. At even a relatively broad level of taxonomic discrimination, the dietary compositions of each pair of species were significantly different, except for those of A. georgiana v. P. speculator, and even in that case those of their larger individuals differed. Differences among the diets of the six species, which represented five families, are related to differences in feeding morphology and location within the water column. Mugil cephalus ingested almost exclusively sediment and fine organic material. Although A. forsteri and S. punctata both consumed substantial amounts of polychaetes (including nereids, capitellids and orbiniids), the former ingested relatively larger volumes of small crustaceans (copepods) and relatively lower volumes of large crustaceans (the carid Palaemonetes australis), nemertines and bivalve siphons. The diets of A. georgiana and P. speculator were both typified by the consistent and high contributions of large crustaceans and fishes. Among fish prey, however, A. georgiana focused to a far greater extent on the small clupeid Engraulis australis, whereas P. speculator consumed a wider range of teleosts, which included species of atherinid and goby. Although the diets of A. forsteri and C. macrocephalus both contained substantial amounts of coarse organic material, the latter differed markedly from those of all other species by the frequent presence of mytilids (mainly Xenostrobus spp.) and other bivalves (especially Tellina deltoidalis and Irus crenata). The diets of each species except M. cephalus changed with increasing body size and, for comparable size classes, did not differ between shallow and deeper waters. The partitioning of food resources within and among the six large and abundant fish species found in Wilson Inlet would reduce the potential for competition for these resources and help account for the large numbers of those species in this seasonally open estuary.  相似文献

Crticial thermal maxima (CTM) of three species of Hawaiian estuarine fishes were determined in relation to acclimation temperature and time of day. The species studied were Mugil cephalus L., Chelon engeli (Bleeker) and Kuhlia sandvicensis (Steindachner). Critical thermal maxima of all three species were significantly affected by acclimation temperature and time. In relation to acclimation temperature, Mugil cephalus and Chelon engeli have similar critical thermal maxima with Kuhlia sandvicensis having a critical thermal maxima about 1° C below that of the other two species studied. Mugil cephalus and Chelon engeli showed an increasing critical thermal maxima toward midday which decreased therafter. Critical thermal maximum of Kuhlia sandvicensis increased throughout the day.  相似文献

Synopsis Detritus is an abundant but poor quality food source for consumers in salt marsh ecosystems. Here we present results of feeding experiments to determine the ability of Fundulus heteroclitus, Cyprinodon variegatus, and Mugil cephalus, three major detritivores in Great Sippewissett Marsh, Massachussetts, to assimilate detritus and use it for growth. C. variegatus, the sheepshead minnow, gained weight on a detrital diet, but F. heteroclitus, the marsh killifish, and juvenile M. cephalus, the striped mullet, lost weight and suffered high mortality on detrital diets. C. variegatus is a herbivore with morphological adaptations for ingesting plant material. F. heteroclitus is a carnivore poorly suited to effectively assimilate detritus from the diet. Although adult M. cephalus are adapted for ingesting and assimilating detrital material, the young may lack these adaptations and thus do not assimilate detritus. C. variegatus excretes ammonium at a lower rate than F. heteroclitus when fed animal food, or when starved for short periods of time. This protein sparing effect could be crucial for survival when detritus is the only food available at certain times of the year. While both C. variegatus and M. cephalus are visitors in the marsh and may leave to exploit food sources elsewhere, F. heteroclitus is a year-round resident and is the most abundant species of fish in the marsh. Yet when high quality food sources become scarce in late summer and fall, detritus, although plentiful, is apparently not a suitable alternative. To whom all correspondences should be addressed.  相似文献

Grey mullets are remarkably characterized by their overall uniform external morphology. Identifying species as well as positioning the Mugiliformes in a phylogenetic context is rather difficult. Most recently they were placed in the newly erected Ovalentaria, but more detailed relationships to potential sister taxa were not resolved. Studying the internal morphology, especially the osteology, might provide new insights into the evolution of the Mugiliformes as well as help clarify their phylogenetic position within the Ovalentaria. A detailed osteology of the golden grey mullet Liza aurata is presented. The use of cleared and stained specimens allowed for a complete examination of bony and cartilaginous structures, and a 3D reconstruction from a μCT data set provided additional information on the positional relationships of the bones. Following this, the data obtained were compared with different mugilid species, particularly with the flathead grey mullet Mugil cephalus. Several differences between these species could be identified, such as the position of the basisphenoid, the shape of the hyomandibular and the composition of the branchial arches. These characters might help in understanding the evolutionary changes happening within the mugiliforms and will provide the basis to study this taxon in detail, finally allowing the reconstruction of the body plan of grey mullets.  相似文献

The loss and degradation of mangrove forests have triggered global restoration efforts to support biodiversity and ecosystem services, including fish stock enhancement. As mangrove restoration accelerates, it is important to evaluate outcomes for species that play functional roles in ecosystems and support services, yet this remains a clear knowledge gap. There is remarkably little information, for example, about how fish use of mangroves varies as restored vegetation matures, hampering efforts to include fisheries benefits in natural capital assessments of restoration. We used unbaited underwater cameras within two distinct zones of mangrove forests—fringe and interior—at five pairs of restored-natural mangrove sites of increasing age from restoration in southeast Queensland, Australia. We used deep learning to automatically extract data for the four most common species: yellowfin bream (Acanthopagrus australis), sea mullet (Mugil cephalus), common toadfish (Tetractenos hamiltoni), and common silverbiddy (Gerres subfasciatus). The abundance of these species varied among sites and zones, but was equal or greater in restored sites compared to paired natural sites. Despite younger restored sites having dramatically lower structural vegetation complexity, abundances did not increase with restoration site maturity. Furthermore, while yellowfin bream and sea mullet were more abundant in the fringe zone, we observed similarities in how fish used fringe and interior zones across all sites. Our paired, space-for-time design provides a powerful test of restoration outcomes for fish, highlighting that even newly restored sites with immature vegetation are readily utilized by key fish species.  相似文献

Forty‐three microsatellites were isolated from grey mullet (Mugil cephalus) of Mediterranean origin using the standard enrichment methods followed by enhanced chemiluminescence for the rapid identification of clones containing microsatellites. Eleven microsatellites were characterized to assess genetic diversity of different populations surrounding the island of Sardinia in Italy. The versatility of these markers was also assessed using an Australian population. All 11 microsatellites were highly polymorphic with a mean heterozygosity of 0.834. The number of alleles ranged from 14 to 38 in the Sardinian populations and from 11 to 25 in the Australian samples.  相似文献
