Carbon uptake by forests is a major sink in the global carbon cycle, helping buffer the rising concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere, yet the potential for future carbon uptake by forests is uncertain. Climate warming and drought can reduce forest carbon uptake by reducing photosynthesis, increasing respiration, and by increasing the frequency and intensity of wildfires, leading to large releases of stored carbon. Five years of eddy covariance measurements in a ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa)‐dominated ecosystem in northern Arizona showed that an intense wildfire that converted forest into sparse grassland shifted site carbon balance from sink to source for at least 15 years after burning. In contrast, recovery of carbon sink strength after thinning, a management practice used to reduce the likelihood of intense wildfires, was rapid. Comparisons between an undisturbed‐control site and an experimentally thinned site showed that thinning reduced carbon sink strength only for the first two posttreatment years. In the third and fourth posttreatment years, annual carbon sink strength of the thinned site was higher than the undisturbed site because thinning reduced aridity and drought limitation to carbon uptake. As a result, annual maximum gross primary production occurred when temperature was 3 °C higher at the thinned site compared with the undisturbed site. The severe fire consistently reduced annual evapotranspiration (range of 12–30%), whereas effects of thinning were smaller and transient, and could not be detected in the fourth year after thinning. Our results show large and persistent effects of intense fire and minor and short‐lived effects of thinning on southwestern ponderosa pine ecosystem carbon and water exchanges.  相似文献

Gray Flycatchers (Empidonax wrightii) breed in a variety of habitats in the arid and semi‐arid regions of the western United States, but little is known about their breeding biology, especially in the northern portion of their range where they nest in ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) forests. From May to July 2014 and 2015, we conducted surveys for singing male Gray Flycatchers along the eastern slope of the Cascade Range in Washington, U.S.A, monitored flycatcher nests, and quantified nest‐site vegetation. We used a logistic‐exposure model fit within a Bayesian framework to model the daily survival probability of flycatcher nests. During the 2 yr of our study, we monitored 141 nests, with 93% in ponderosa pines. Mean clutch size was 3.6 eggs and the mean number of young fledged per nest was 3.2. Predation accounted for 90% of failed nests. We found a positive association between daily nest survival and both nest height and distance of nest substrates from the nearest tree. Flycatchers that locate their nests higher above the ground and further from adjacent trees may be choosing the safest alternative because higher nests may be less exposed to terrestrial predators and nests in trees that are farther from other trees may be less exposed to arboreal predators such as jays (Corvidae) that may forage in patches with connected canopies. Nests in trees farther from other trees may also allow earlier detection of approaching predators and thus aid in nest defense.  相似文献

Long‐distance dispersal is an integral part of plant species migration and population development. We aged and genotyped 1125 individuals in four disjunct populations of Pinus ponderosa that were initially established by long‐distance dispersal in the 16th and 17th centuries. Parentage analysis was used to determine if individuals were the product of local reproductive events (two parents present), long‐distance pollen dispersal (one parent present) or long‐distance seed dispersal (no parents present). All individuals established in the first century at each site were the result of long‐distance dispersal. Individuals reproduced at younger ages with increasing age of the overall population. These results suggest Allee effects, where populations were initially unable to expand on their own, and were dependent on long‐distance dispersal to overcome a minimum‐size threshold. Our results demonstrate that long‐distance dispersal was not only necessary for initial colonisation but also to sustain subsequent population growth during early phases of expansion.  相似文献

Population history plays an important role in shaping contemporary levels of genetic variation and geographic structure. This is especially true in small, isolated range‐margin populations, where effects of inbreeding, genetic drift and gene flow may be more pronounced than in large continuous populations. Effects of landscape fragmentation and isolation distance may have implications for persistence of range‐margin populations if they are demographic sinks. We studied four small, disjunct populations of ponderosa pine over a 500‐year period. We coupled demographic data obtained through dendroecological methods with microsatellite data to discern how and when contemporary levels of allelic diversity, among and within‐population levels of differentiation, and geographic structure, arose. Alleles accumulated rapidly following initial colonization, demonstrating proportionally high levels of gene flow into the populations. At population sizes of approximately 100 individuals, allele accumulation saturated. Levels of genetic differentiation among populations (FST and Jost's Dest) and diversity within populations (FIS) remained stable through time. There was no evidence of geographic genetic structure at any time in the populations' history. Proportionally, high gene flow in the early stages of population growth resulted in rapid accumulation of alleles and quickly created relatively homogenous genetic patterns among populations. Our study demonstrates that contemporary levels of genetic diversity were formed quickly and early in population development. How contemporary genetic diversity accumulates over time is a key facet of understanding population growth and development. This is especially relevant given the extent and speed at which species ranges are predicted to shift in the coming century.  相似文献

A historically unprecedented mountain pine beetle (MPB) outbreak affected western Montana during the past decade. We examined radial growth rates (AD 1860–2007/8) of co‐occurring mature healthy and MPB‐infected ponderosa pine trees collected at two sites (Cabin Gulch and Kitchen Gulch) in western Montana and: (1) compared basal area increment (BAI) values within populations and between sites; (2) used carbon isotope analysis to calculate intrinsic water‐use efficiency (iWUE) at Cabin Gulch; and (3) compared climate‐growth responses using a suite of monthly climatic variables. BAI values within populations and between sites were similar until the last 20–30 years, at which point the visually healthy populations had consistently higher BAI values (22–34%) than the MPB‐infected trees. These results suggest that growth rates two–three decades prior to the current outbreak diverged between our selected populations, with the slower‐growing trees being more vulnerable to beetle infestation. Both samples from Cabin Gulch experienced upward trends in iWUE, with significant regime shifts toward higher iWUE beginning in 1955–59 for the visually healthy trees and 1960–64 for the MPB‐infected trees. Drought tolerance also varied between the two populations with the visually healthy trees having higher growth rates than MPB‐infected trees prior to infection during a multi‐decadal period of drying summertime conditions. Intrinsic water‐use efficiency significantly increased for both populations during the past 150 years, but there were no significant differences between the visually healthy and MPB‐infected chronologies.  相似文献

Esters of ferulic acid with monoterpene alcohols were found in ponderosa pine oleoresin. These colorless ferulic acid esters are responsible for a yellow band seen on DEAE-Sephadex fractionation of the oleoresin. Two diterpene resin acids not previously found in pines and several resin acid artifacts were identified.  相似文献

Disturbance legacies structure communities and ecological memory, but due to increasing changes in disturbance regimes, it is becoming more difficult to characterize disturbance legacies or determine how long they persist. We sought to quantify the characteristics and persistence of material legacies (e.g., biotic residuals of disturbance) that arise from variation in fire severity in an eastern ponderosa pine forest in North America. We compared forest stand structure and understory woody plant and bird community composition and species richness across unburned, low‐, moderate‐, and high‐severity burn patches in a 27‐year‐old mixed‐severity wildfire that had received minimal post‐fire management. We identified distinct tree densities (high: 14.3 ± 7.4 trees per ha, moderate: 22.3 ± 12.6, low: 135.3 ± 57.1, unburned: 907.9 ± 246.2) and coarse woody debris cover (high: 8.5 ± 1.6% cover per 30 m transect, moderate: 4.3 ± 0.7, low: 2.3 ± 0.6, unburned: 1.0 ± 0.4) among burn severities. Understory woody plant communities differed between high‐severity patches, moderate‐ and low‐severity patches, and unburned patches (all p < 0.05). Bird communities differed between high‐ and moderate‐severity patches, low‐severity patches, and unburned patches (all p < 0.05). Bird species richness varied across burn severities: low‐severity patches had the highest (5.29 ± 1.44) and high‐severity patches had the lowest (2.87 ± 0.72). Understory woody plant richness was highest in unburned (5.93 ± 1.10) and high‐severity (5.07 ± 1.17) patches, and it was lower in moderate‐ (3.43 ± 1.17) and low‐severity (3.43 ± 1.06) patches. We show material fire legacies persisted decades after the mixed‐severity wildfire in eastern ponderosa forest, fostering distinct structures, communities, and species in burned versus unburned patches and across fire severities. At a patch scale, eastern and western ponderosa system responses to mixed‐severity fires were consistent.  相似文献

Soil‐surface CO2 efflux and its spatial and temporal variations were examined in an 8‐y‐old ponderosa pine plantation in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California from June 1998 to August 1999. Continuous measurements of soil CO2 efflux, soil temperatures and moisture were conducted on two 20 × 20 m sampling plots. Microbial biomass, fine root biomass, and the physical and chemical properties of the soil were also measured at each of the 18 sampling locations on the plots. It was found that the mean soil CO2 efflux in the plantation was 4.43 µmol m?2 s?1 in the growing season and 3.12 µmol m?2 s?1 in the nongrowing season. These values are in the upper part of the range of published soil‐surface CO2 efflux data. The annual maximum and minimum CO2 efflux were 5.87 and 1.67 µmol m?2 s?1, respectively, with the maximum occurring between the end of May and early June and the minimum in December. The diurnal fluctuation of CO2 efflux was relatively small (< 20%) with the minimum appearing around 09.00 hours and the maximum around 14.00 hours. Using daytime measurements of soil CO2 efflux tends to overestimate the daily mean soil CO2 efflux by 4–6%. The measurements taken between 09.00 and 11.00 hours (local time) seem to better represent the daily mean with a reduced sampling error of 0.9–1.5%. The spatial variation of soil CO2 efflux among the 18 sampling points was high, with a coefficient of variation of approximately 30%. Most (84%) of the spatial variation was explained by fine root biomass, microbial biomass, and soil physical and chemical properties. Although soil temperature and moisture explained most of the temporal variations (76–95%) of soil CO2 efflux, the two variables together explained less than 34% of the spatial variation. Microbial biomass, fine root biomass, soil nitrogen content, organic matter content, and magnesium content were significantly and positively correlated with soil CO2 efflux, whereas bulk density and pH value were negatively correlated with CO2 efflux. The relationship between soil CO2 efflux and soil temperature was significantly controlled by soil moisture with a Q10 value of 1.4 when soil moisture was <14% and 1.8 when soil moisture was >14%. Understanding the spatial and temporal variations is essential to accurately assessment of carbon budget at whole ecosystem and landscape scales. Thus, this study bears important implications for the study of large‐scale ecosystem dynamics, particularly in response to climatic variations and management regimes.  相似文献

Post-fire Pezizales fruit commonly in many forest types after fire. The objectives of this study were to determine which Pezizales appeared as sporocarps after a prescribed fire in the Blue Mountains of eastern Oregon, and whether species of Pezizales formed mycorrhizas on ponderosa pine, whether or not they were detected from sporocarps. Forty-two sporocarp collections in five genera (Anthracobia, Morchella, Peziza, Scutellinia, Tricharina) of post-fire Pezizales produced ten restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) types. We found no root tips colonized by species of post-fire Pezizales fruiting at our site. However, 15% (6/39) of the RFLP types obtained from mycorrhizal roots within 32 soil cores were ascomycetes. Phylogenetic analyses of the 18S nuclear ribosomal DNA gene indicated that four of the six RFLP types clustered with two genera of the Pezizales, Wilcoxina and Geopora. Subsequent analyses indicated that two of these mycobionts were probably Wilcoxina rehmii, one Geopora cooperi, and one Geopora sp. The identities of two types were not successfully determined with PCR-based methods. Results contribute knowledge about the above- and below-ground ascomycete community in a ponderosa pine forest after a low intensity fire.  相似文献

Of 12 stylet-bearing nematodes used for inoculations, Pratylenchus penetrans, P. brachyurus, P. vulnus, Ditylenchus destructor, Meloidogyne incognita, M. javanica, and M. hapla reproduced on Pinus ponderosa, while Xiphinema index, Aphelenchus avenae, Paratylenehus neoamblycephalus, Tylenchulus semipenetrans, and Macroposthonia xenoplax did not. P. vulnus, P. brachyurus, P. penetrans, A. avenae, D. destructor, T. semipenetrans, and P. neoamblycephalus significantly suppressed both the shoot and root wet weights of ponderosa pine seedlings obtained from stands in five different locations. X. index significantly suppressed root wet weights, M. xenoplax siguificantly suppressed shoot wet weight, and M. incognita, M. javanica, and M. hapla suppressed neither at the inoculation levels used. Injurious nematodes tended to suppress root growth more than shoot growth. Seedlings from two locations produced greater shoot growth wet weight than did seedlings from the other three locations. The more injurious nematodes tended to cause an increase in the water content of shoots. Frequency analyses of seedling population shoot-root ratios indicated that ponderosa pine seedlings could be selected for better shoot-root ratios as well as for resistance to several pathogenic nematodes.  相似文献

Accurate and ecologically meaningful characterisation of reference conditions is a fundamental premise of restoration ecology. Restoration practice and research commonly define reference conditions in terms of compositional and structural elements. We propose a “process-centred” framework that places central emphasis on ecological functions and ecosystem processes. A wide variety of processes is central to the functioning and dynamics of ecological systems, and can be placed at the foundation of restoration research and practice. A process-centred approach allows the definition of “reference dynamics”, where spatial and temporal variability and underlying mechanisms of change are primary. We illustrate this approach using a 303-yr reconstruction of the natural surface fire regime to guide restoration of a Pinus ponderosa forest in the Jemez Mountains of southwestern North America. Fire occurrence varied over space and time during the period of record, with ecologically significant variation in fire intervals (yr fire−1) governed by process–structure interactions. We defined a variety of reference variables for reintroduction of fire as the keystone ecological process, along with related structural variation. A process-centered approach and the reference dynamics paradigm can replace a more static concept of reference conditions in defining restoration baselines and provide an improved standard of comparison for restoration ecology.  相似文献

The placement of Pinus ponderosa embryos on a benzyladenine (BA) supplemented medium induces the differentiation of two distinct morphological types of cotyledons. Cotyledons in contact with the medium (lower cotyledons) do not elongate, and rapidly respond to BA by forming multiple buds along their entire length. Cotyledons not in contact with the medium (upper cotyledons) elongate, do not form buds, and are similar both morphologically and in protein profiles to seedling cotyledons that do not respond to BA. Using sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide electrophoresis, protein differences between these two cotyledon types can be detected as early as one week. These protein differences include the reduced level of a 52,000 Kilodalton (52 Kd) peptide and the appearance of a 4 Kd peptide in the lower cotyledons. These peptide differences may prove useful as markers for tissue that will respond to BA.  相似文献

Local adaptation to serpentine soils is studied using both transplant experiments and molecular genetic techniques. In long-lived species, such as pines, it is unclear how soon after germination local adaptation becomes detectable. Here I present results of a 36-year reciprocal transplant experiment using Pinus ponderosa, along with allozyme analyses from the same trees. Using a repeated measures analysis of variance, there is evidence for adaptation to serpentine soils; however, significant differences between source soil types do not become apparent until 20 years after the start of the experiment. Analysis of allozyme data showed no evidence for differentiation between the serpentine and non-serpentine populations. Comparing the performance of families over the course of the experiment found that there was little correlation between performance after 1 or 4 years of growth in the field and performance after 36 years. This suggests that short-term transplant experiments may not provide definitive evidence for adaptation to serpentine soils. A literature survey of all transplant studies using pine species growing on and off of serpentine soils found that studies that lasted fewer than 2 years showed no evidence for adaptation. However, in the two experiments (this one included) that lasted more than 2 years, both showed evidence for adaptation to serpentine soils. More long-term experiments are required to validate these results.  相似文献

Glyoxysomes in megagamethophyte of germinating ponderosa pine seeds   总被引:15,自引:11,他引:4       下载免费PDF全文

Decoated ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Laws) seeds contained 40% lipids, which were mainly stored in megagametophytic tissue and were utilized or converted to sugars via the glyoxylate cycle during germination. Mitochondria and glyoxysomes were isolated from the tissue by sucrose density gradient centrifugation at different stages of germination. It was found that isocitrate lyase, malate synthase, and catalase were mainly bound in glyoxysomes. Aconitase and fumarase were chiefly localized in mitochondria, whereas citrate synthase was common for both. Both organelles increased in quantity and specific activity of their respective marker enzymes with the advancement of germination. When the megagametophyte was exhausted at the end of germination, the quantity of these organelles and the activity of their marker enzymes decreased abruptly. At the stage of highest lipolysis, the isolated mitochondria and glyoxysomes were able to synthesize protein from labeled amino acids. Both organellar fractions contained RNA and DNA. Some degree of autonomy in glyoxysomes is indicated.  相似文献

The muted wood isotopic signal in slow-growing trees of unthinned stands indicates lower responsiveness to changing environmental conditions compared to fast-growing trees in thinned stands.

Abstract

To examine the physiological processes associated with higher growth rates after thinning, we analyzed the oxygen isotopic values in wood (δ18Ow) of 12 ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) trees from control, moderately, and heavily thinned stands and compared them with wood-based estimates of carbon isotope discrimination (?13C), basal area increment (BAI), and gas exchange. We found that (heavy) thinning led to shifts and increased inter-annual variability of both stable carbon and oxygen isotope ratios relative to the control throughout the first post-thinning decade. Results of a sensitivity analysis suggested that both an increase in stomatal conductance (g s) and differences in source water among treatments are equally probable causes of the δ18Ow shift in heavily thinned stands. We modeled inter-annual changes in δ18Ow of trees from all treatments using environmental and physiological data and found that the significant increase in δ18Ow inter-annual variance was related to greater δ18Ow responsiveness to changing environmental conditions for trees in thinned stands when compared to control stands. Based on model results, the more muted climatic response of wood isotopes in slow-growing control trees is likely to be the consequence of reduced carbon sink strength causing a higher degree of mixing of previously stored and fresh assimilates when compared to faster-growing trees in thinned stands. Alternatively, the muted response of δ18Ow to climatic variation of trees in the control stand may result from little variation in the control stand in physiological processes (photosynthesis, transpiration) that are known to affect δ18Ow.  相似文献

Techniques are presented to detect 23 isozyme loci in the long-lived perennial plant, ponderosa pine. Meiotically derived megagametophyte from seeds is used to examine directly the segregation of allelic variants. Approximately seven seeds were initially examined for 12 enzymes from each of 47 trees from ten stands throughout the northern Rocky Mountain region. Additional seeds were also examined from selected families to confirm the inheritance of observed electrophoretic variants at 13 polymorphic loci and to estimate linkage relationships. Significant nonrandom segregation was consistently detected for three pairs of loci: ADH-1: AAT-2, ADH-1: PGI-1, and LAP-2: 6PG-1. Preliminary estimates of population parameters reveal a relatively high average heterozygosity (H=0.123). This is partitioned into a high amount of genetic variation within local stands, with only approximately 12% of the total heterozygosity resulting from genic differences between stands.Funds for this study were made available under the McIntire-Stennis program of the Forest, Range, and Conservation Experiment Station of the School of Forestry, University of Montana.  相似文献
