With few exceptions insects whose larvae develop in freshwater possess positive polarotaxis, i.e., are attracted to sources of horizontally polarized light, because they detect water by means of the horizontal polarization of light reflected from the water surface. These insects can be deceived by artificial surfaces (e.g. oil lakes, asphalt roads, black plastic sheets, dark-coloured cars, black gravestones, dark glass surfaces, solar panels) reflecting highly and horizontally polarized light. Apart from the surface characteristics, the extent of such a ‘polarized light pollution’ depends on the illumination conditions, direction of view, and the threshold p* of polarization sensitivity of a given aquatic insect species. p* means the minimum degree of linear polarization p of reflected light that can elicit positive polarotaxis from a given insect species. Earlier there were no quantitative data on p* in aquatic insects. The aim of this work is to provide such data. Using imaging polarimetry in the red, green and blue parts of the spectrum, in multiple-choice field experiments we measured the threshold p* of ventral polarization sensitivity in mayflies, dragonflies and tabanid flies, the positive polarotaxis of which has been shown earlier. In the blue (450 nm) spectral range, for example, we obtained the following thresholds: dragonflies: Enallagma cyathigerum (0% < p* ≤ 17%), Ischnura elegans (17% ≤ p* ≤ 24%). Mayflies: Baetis rhodani (32% ≤ p* ≤ 55%), Ephemera danica, Epeorus silvicola, Rhithrogena semicolorata (55% ≤ p* ≤ 92%). Tabanids: Tabanus bovinus, Tabanus tergestinus (32% ≤ p* ≤ 55%), Tabanus maculicornis (55% ≤ p* ≤ 92%).  相似文献

Aquatic and water-associated insects need to locate suitable bodies of water to lay their eggs in and allow their aquatic larvae to develop. More than 300 species are known to solve this task by positive polarotaxis, relying primarily on the horizontally polarized light reflected from the water surface. The yellow fever mosquito Aedes (Stegomyia) aegypti has been thought to be an exception, locating its breeding habitats by chemical cues like odour of conspecifics, their eggs, or water vapour. We now demonstrate through dual-choice experiments that horizontally polarized light can also attract ovipositing Ae. aegypti females when the latter are deprived of chemical cues: water-filled transparent egg-trays illuminated by horizontally polarized light from below gained a 94.2% higher total number of eggs than trays exposed to unpolarized light, but only when no chemical substances capable of functioning as cues were present. Ae. aegypti is the first known water-associated insect in which polarotaxis exists, but does not play a dominant role in locating water bodies and can be constrained in the presence of chemical cues.  相似文献

同步分析了生长在滨海滩涂沙地的灌木单叶蔓荆钠和钾离子的累积量与植物的水分累积消耗量与光合产物累积量的日变化特点和累积的关系,并比较了单叶蔓荆在晴天和阴天的木质部溶液离子浓度与植物水势的关系和水分利用效率的差别,结果表明:单叶蔓荆在光强度较高的晴天的水分利用效率高于阴天,在晴天的光合产物累积达到了阴天的约4倍,却只消耗了约为阴天3倍的水。随着植物体水势的降低,单叶蔓荆木质部溶液的钠离子的浓度和钾离子浓度呈降低趋势但不明显。木质部溶液的钾离子浓度和钾离子累积量无论在晴天和阴天都明显低于钠离子的浓度和累积量。单叶蔓荆的高浓度的钠离子吸收有可能在液泡累积并降低细胞的渗透势,增加细胞的吸水能力和植物的抗旱抗盐能力。  相似文献

The diurnal cycle of light and dark is one of the strongest environmental factors for life on Earth. Many species in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems use the level of ambient light to regulate their metabolism, growth, and behavior. The sky glow caused by artificial lighting from urban areas disrupts this natural cycle, and has been shown to impact the behavior of organisms, even many kilometers away from the light sources. It could be hypothesized that factors that increase the luminance of the sky amplify the degree of this "ecological light pollution". We show that cloud coverage dramatically amplifies the sky luminance, by a factor of 10.1 for one location inside of Berlin and by a factor of 2.8 at 32 km from the city center. We also show that inside of the city overcast nights are brighter than clear rural moonlit nights, by a factor of 4.1. These results have important implications for choronobiological and chronoecological studies in urban areas, where this amplification effect has previously not been considered.  相似文献

1. Daily changes in the flight activity of aquatic insects have been investigated in only a few water beetles and bugs. The diel flight periodicity of aquatic insects and the environmental factors governing it are poorly understood. 2. We found that primary aquatic insects belonging to 99 taxa (78 Coleoptera, 21 Heteroptera) fly predominantly in mid‐morning, and/or around noon and/or at nightfall. There appears to be at least four different types of diurnal flight activity rhythm in aquatic insects, characterised by peak(s): (i) in mid‐morning; (ii) in the evening; (iii) both in mid‐morning and the evening; (iv) around noon and again in the evening. These activity maxima are quite general and cannot be explained exclusively by daily fluctuations of air temperature, humidity, wind speed and risks of predation, which are all somewhat stochastic. 3. We found experimental evidence that the proportion (%) P(θ) of reflecting surfaces detectable polarotactically as ‘water’ is always maximal at the lowest (dawn and dusk) and highest (noon) angles of solar elevation (θ) for dark reflectors while P(θ) is maximal at dawn and dusk (low solar elevations) for bright reflectors under clear or partly cloudy skies. 4. From the temporal coincidence between peaks in the diel flight activity of primary aquatic insects and the polarotactic detectability P(θ) of water surfaces we conclude that the optimal times of day for aquatic insects to disperse are the periods of low and high solar elevations θ. The θ‐dependent reflection–polarisation patterns, combined with an appropriate air temperature, clearly explain why polarotactic aquatic insects disperse to new habitats in mid‐morning, and/or around noon and/or at dusk. We call this phenomenon the ‘polarisation sun‐dial’ of dispersing aquatic insects.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung Eine Versuchsreihe, in der Fehlerquellen weitgehend ausgeschaltet waren, galt der bisher noch nicht eindeutig entschiedenen Frage, ob verfrachtete Brieftauben unter einer geschlossenen Wolkendecke weniger gut gerichtet abfliegen als bei sonnigem Wetter. Nach den vorgelegten Ergebnissen ist diese Frage zu bejahen. Die Befunde stehen somit im Einklang mit der Vorstellung, daß der Sonne beim Heimfinden der Brieftauben eine Bedeutung zukommt.
Summary A series of experiments, in which earlier sources of error were significantly reduced, was conducted to answer the following question: Do displaced homing pigeons released under overcast skies show greater variance in their departure directions than pigeons released in sunny weather? According to the described results the question can be answered in the affirmative. Thus, the results are in good agreement with the idea that the sun plays a role in the homing process.

The horizontally polarizing surface parts of shiny black cars (the reflection-polarization characteristics of which are similar to those of water surfaces) attract water-leaving polarotactic insects. Thus, shiny black cars are typical sources of polarized light pollution endangering water-leaving insects. A new fashion fad is to make car-bodies matt black or grey. Since rough (matt) surfaces depolarize the reflected light, one of the ways of reducing polarized light pollution is to make matt the concerned surface. Consequently, matt black/grey cars may not induce polarized light pollution, which would be an advantageous feature for environmental protection. To test this idea, we performed field experiments with horizontal shiny and matt black car-body surfaces laid on the ground. Using imaging polarimetry, in multiple-choice field experiments we investigated the attractiveness of these test surfaces to various water-leaving polarotactic insects and obtained the following results: (i) The attractiveness of black car-bodies to polarotactic insects depends in complex manner on the surface roughness (shiny, matt) and species (mayflies, dolichopodids, tabanids). (ii) Non-expectedly, the matt dark grey car finish is much more attractive to mayflies (being endangered and protected in many countries) than matt black finish. (iii) The polarized light pollution of shiny black cars usually cannot be reduced with the use of matt painting. On the basis of these, our two novel findings are that (a) matt car-paints are highly polarization reflecting, and (b) these matt paints are not suitable to repel polarotactic insects. Hence, the recent technology used to make matt the car-bodies cannot eliminate or even can enhance the attractiveness of black/grey cars to water-leaving insects. Thus, changing shiny black car painting to matt one is a disadvantageous fashion fad concerning the reduction of polarized light pollution of black vehicles.  相似文献

Some studies found no, or weak evidence that dense monotypic cattail (Typha spp.) stands exclude water beetle species from aquatic habitats, or modify aquatic beetle assemblages. Other studies suggest that cattail may reduce the chance of aerial water beetle colonization, and decreases water temperature; negatively affecting these insects. We examined the response of aquatic beetle assemblages to the mowing of cattail (Typha angustifolia L., T. latifolia L.) in a freshwater marsh. Following removal of cattail at the water level in experimental plots, aquatic beetles were sampled both in mowed and intact (control) plots weekly, through a month in the spring of 2008. Aquatic beetles were more abundant in mowed plots. Species richness was the same, but it showed different patterns in mowed and intact plots. Shannon’s diversity was similar between treatments, while evenness was lower in mowed plots. 29% of the aquatic beetles showed a strong preference for mowed plots, and 15% preferred the control plots. Water temperature was an important factor, with mowed plots having higher water temperatures because of increased solar radiation. Polarization visibility of the water surface was also a factor, since aerially colonizing (flying) aquatic beetles use horizontally polarized light reflected from the water surface to seek potential locations. Using imaging polarimetry, we showed that mowing strongly enhanced the water-reflected polarized light signal, because it reduced the screening effect of cattail leaves, which made the visual detection of water easier. Our results suggest that cattail mowing is a useful method in aquatic beetle conservation: it increases the chance of aerial colonization due to the enhanced polarization visibility of the water surface, and creates a habitat for more abundant assemblages otherwise excluded by the monodominant dense cattail stands. Thus, sustaining hemi-marsh conditions with vegetated and mowed areas is advisable to maximize overall aquatic beetle diversity.  相似文献

We examined the relative importance of climatic factors and population density to territorial start time ofVanessa atalanta males. Start time varies with solar altitude and therefore with seasons. We removed seasonal effects by converting start times to corresponding solar altitudes. Start time solar altitude correlates primarily with ambient temperature (T a) and secondarily with substrate temperature (T s), regardless of cloud cover. Overcast cloud cover resulted in later not earlier start times as expected from reduced solar radiation (R) levels. R may affect start time indirectly by affectingT s and later start times under overcast skies may be a result ofT s. Start times under solid overcast but not under broken overcast were different than under clear skies, suggesting thatV. atalanta males can use dim sun or blue patches in broken overcast as a start time cue. Early interaction frequency is correlated withT a and wind direction, but not with start time itself, suggesting that male population density is unimportant compared with climatic factors. We conclude thatV. atalanta has a climate-dependent start time but, also, that maintaining a relatively fixed daily schedule is more important to males than is achieving an optimal body temperature while perching.  相似文献

When an artificial surface (e.g. an asphalt road) reflects strongly and horizontally polarized light as water bodies do in the nature, polarotactic aquatic insects, like the creek-dwelling Ephemera danica mayflies easily become deceived. After swarming above the creek surface, E. danica females begin their upstream compensatory flight and can be deflected at bridges with an asphalt road and continue their flight above the road surface. Thus, the water-mimicking optical signal of the road may deceive water-seeking polarotactic mayflies and lead them to distant, polarized-light-polluting surfaces, which elicit anomalous oviposition. On an asphalt road crossing a creek, we deployed polarizing insect traps at different distances from the bridge. The traps captured E. danica mayflies and their catch numbers indicated that these mayflies originated from the direction of the bridge, proving that they followed the track of the road. Our results suggest that distant polarized-light-polluting objects along an asphalt road can trap mayflies emerging from a creek crossing the road. The combination of an asphalt road and a man-made in situ (local) polarizing surface forms a complex ecological trap, being capable of luring aquatic insects from greater distances. To eliminate the oviposition of dangered polarotactic aquatic insects emerging from a creek onto the asphalt road crossing the creek, we suggest to deploy strongly and horizontally polarizing water-filled black trays along the edge of the road during the swarming period. Thus, the eggs of the deceived insects can be moved back to the creek in order to assist the conservation of the offspring-generation.  相似文献

Adult aquatic insects are a common resource for many terrestrial predators, often considered to subsidize terrestrial food webs. However, larval aquatic insects themselves consume both aquatic primary producers and allochthonous terrestrial detritus, suggesting that adults could provide aquatic subsidy and/or recycled terrestrial energy to terrestrial consumers. Understanding the source of carbon (aquatic vs. terrestrial) driving aquatic insect emergence is important for predicting magnitude of emergence and effects on recipient food web dynamics; yet direct experimental tests of factors determining source are lacking. Here, we use Culex mosquitoes in experimental pools as an exemplar to test how variation in general factors common to aquatic systems (terrestrial plant inputs and light) may alter the source and amount of energy exported to terrestrial ecosystems in adult aquatic insects that rely on terrestrial resources as larvae. We found strong sequential effects of terrestrial plant inputs and light on aquatic insect oviposition, diet, and emergence of Culex mosquitoes. Ovipositing mosquitoes laid ~3 times more egg masses in high terrestrial input pools under low light conditions. This behavior increased adult emergence from pools under low light conditions; however, high input pools (which had the highest mosquito densities) showed low emergence rates due to density-dependent mortality. Mosquito diets consisted mainly of terrestrial resources (~70–90 %). As a result, the amount of aquatic carbon exported from pools by mosquitoes during the experiment was ~18 times higher from low versus high light pools, while exports of terrestrial carbon peaked from pools receiving intermediate levels of inputs (3–6 times higher) and low light (~6 times higher). Our results suggest that understanding the interplay among terrestrial plant inputs, light availability and biotic responses of aquatic insects may be key in predicting source and magnitude of emergence, and thus the strength and effects of aquatic–terrestrial linkages in freshwater systems.  相似文献

Sky conditions play an important role in the Earth’s climate system and CO2 uptake by plants. We used eddy covariance and meteorological data, including global and diffuse photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD), recorded over the 2008 and 2009 growing season at two Sitka spruce [Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carr.] forest sites in northern Britain, in order to establish relationships between physiological properties under diverse sky conditions, i.e. (1) sunny, (2) cloudy, and (3) overcast, and several canopy activity-related properties. These properties are: (1) response to PPFD, (2) photosynthetic light use efficiency, and (3) canopy stomatal conductance. We found that Sitka spruce forests utilise PPFD in a more efficient way when solar radiation is dominated by diffuse radiation. Furthermore, our results show that diffuse radiation enhances canopy stomatal conductance, an effect which may be the result of both blue light enrichment within the canopy and the reduction in vapour pressure deficit during cloudy and overcast weather. Diffuse radiation does not only influence short-term (hourly, daily, monthly) canopy activity but also long-term forest growth.  相似文献

An integrated system of solar light, artificial light and organic carbon supply was developed for cyclic photoautotrophic-heterotrophic cultivation of photosynthetic cells. The energy source for the culture is automatically switched to solar light energy (when the weather is sunny), to artificial light energy (during the cloudy period of the day) or to organic carbon source (at night). Thus minimum amount of artificial light is used while ensuring continuous light supply to the culture during the photoautotrophic phase. The -tocopherol productivity by Euglena gracilis in this system was more than 5 times higher than the value obtained in pure photoautotrophic culture under the same experimental conditions.  相似文献

The migratory orientation of European robins (Erithacus rubecula) in autumn was tested immediately after sunset and also after the beginning of astronomical darkness. In twilight tests under clear skies, the birds selected an appropriate migratory direction. During the course of autumn, along with the shift of sunset azimuth, the orientation of birds also shifted, always in a counter-clockwise direction. Although this shift of orientation was not statistically significant, the difference between the mean direction and the sunset was the same for each autumn period. This suggests that the migratory direction was selected on the basis of menotactic orientation re the setting sun. Random directions were observed under solid overcast skies as well as during tests under starry skies, begun after all trace of the sunset position had disappeared.  相似文献

Ecological photopollution created by artificial night lighting can alter animal behavior and lead to population declines and biodiversity loss. Polarized light pollution is a second type of photopollution that triggers water-seeking insects to ovisposit on smooth and dark man-made objects, because they simulate the polarization signatures of natural water bodies. We document a case study of the interaction of these two forms of photopollution by conducting observations and experiments near a lamp-lit bridge over the river Danube that attracts mass swarms of the mayfly Ephoron virgo away from the river to oviposit on the asphalt road of the bridge. Millions of mayflies swarmed near bridge-lights for two weeks. We found these swarms to be composed of 99% adult females performing their upstream compensatory flight and were attracted upward toward unpolarized bridge-lamp light, and away from the horizontally polarized light trail of the river. Imaging polarimetry confirmed that the asphalt surface of the bridge was strongly and horizontally polarized, providing a supernormal ovipositional cue to Ephoron virgo, while other parts of the bridge were poor polarizers of lamplight. Collectively, we confirm that Ephoron virgo is independently attracted to both unpolarized and polarized light sources, that both types of photopollution are being produced at the bridge, and that spatial patterns of swarming and oviposition are consistent with evolved behaviors being triggered maladaptively by these two types of light pollution. We suggest solutions to bridge and lighting design that should prevent or mitigate the impacts of such scenarios in the future. The detrimental impacts of such scenarios may extend beyond Ephoron virgo.  相似文献

Migratory orientation of Scandinavian and Greenland wheatears was recorded during the autumn migration periods of 1988 and 1989. Orientation cage tests were conducted under clear sunset skies, to investigate the importance of different visible sky sections on orientation performance. In addition, wheatears were released under clear starry skies and under total overcast to examine the orientation of free-flying birds. The following results were obtained:
  • 1 Wheatears tested with a restricted visible sky section (90° centered around zenith) in orientation cages, showed a mean orientation towards geographic W/geomagnetic NW (Greenland) and towards geographic and magnetic WNW-NW (Sweden). These mean directions are clearly inconsistent with the expected autumn migration directions, SW-SSW in Scandinavia and SE in Greenland, as revealed by ringing recoveries for the two populations.
  • 2 When the birds were allowed a much more extensive view of the sky, almost down to the horizon (above 10° elevation), Scandinavian wheatears chose headings in agreement with ringing data. Greenland birds were not significantly oriented.
  • 3 Release experiments under clear starry skies resulted in mean vanishing directions in good agreement with ringing data from both sites. Greenland wheatears released under total overcast showed a similar orientation as under clear skies, indicating that a view of the stars may not be of crucial importance for selecting a seasonally accurate migratory direction.
The results suggest that an unobstructed view of the sky, including visual cues low over the horizon, is important, possibly in combination with geomagnetic cues, for the orientation of migratory naive wheatears. Furthermore, the birds showed remarkably similar orientation responses in Greenland and Scandinavia, respectively, indicating that they use basically the same orientation system, despite considerable differences in visual and geomagnetic orientation premises at the two different geographic and magnetic latitudes.  相似文献

The complexities of the interactions between long- and short-wave radiation fluxes and the human body make it inherently difficult to estimate precisely the total radiation absorbed (R) by a human in an outdoor environment. The purpose of this project was to assess and compare three methods to estimate the radiation absorbed by a human in an outdoor environment, and to compare the impact of applying various skin and clothing albedos (alpha ( h )) on R. Field tests were conducted under both clear and overcast skies to evaluate the performance of applying a cylindrical radiation thermometer (CRT), net radiometer, and a theoretical estimation model to predict R. Three albedos were evaluated: light (alpha ( h ) = 0.57), medium (alpha ( h ) = 0.37), and dark (alpha ( h ) = 0.21). During the sampling periods, the range of error between the methods used to estimate the radiation absorbed by a cylindrical body under clear and overcast skies ranged from 3 to 8%. Clothing and skin albedo had a substantial impact on R, with the mean change in R between the darkest and lightest albedos ranging from 115 to 157 W m( - 2) over the sampling period. Radiation is one of the most important variables to consider in outdoor thermal comfort research, as R is often the largest contributor to the human energy balance equation. The methods outlined and assessed in this study can be conveniently applied to provide reliable estimates of the radiation absorbed by a human in an outdoor environment.  相似文献

The adaptive significance of vertical migration by planktonic organisms is often explained in terms of reducing the risk of predation. Observational evidence, however, indicates that migratory patterns may also be triggered by solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Such a strategy would allow animals to escape from UV-induced damage into deeper water layers. In this study, we examine the relation of several biotic (invertebrate predators, algae) and abiotic (temperature, radiation) factors to the vertical distribution of Daphnia longispina in a 50-cm-deep, fishless pond in subarctic Finnish Lapland. Samples were taken from three depths, on both sunny and overcast days, and at different hours of day. Our results show that, on sunny days, the vertical distribution of Daphnia responds to ultraviolet radiation, whereas on overcast days, predator avoidance (phantom midge, Chaoborus obscuripes) is a better predictor of Daphnia distribution. Juvenile and adult Daphnia showed a similar distribution pattern.  相似文献
