Decreased immunocompetence in a severely bottlenecked population of an endemic New Zealand bird 总被引:7,自引:6,他引:1
Inbreeding resulting from severe population bottlenecks may impair an individual's immune system and render it more susceptible to disease. Although a reduced immune response could threaten the survival of highly endangered species, few studies have assessed the effect of population bottlenecks on immunocompetence. We compared the counts of leucocytes and external, blood and gastrointestinal parasite loads in two populations of the endemic New Zealand robin Petroica australis to assess the immunocompetence of birds in a severely bottlenecked population relative to its more genetically diverse source population. Despite similar parasite loads in both populations, robins in the severely bottlenecked population showed lower counts of both total leucocyte and total lymphocyte numbers. When the immune system was experimentally challenged using the phytohaemagglutinin skin test, robins in the severely bottlenecked population exhibited a significantly lower immune response than the source population, suggesting that birds passing through a severe bottleneck have a compromised immunocompetence. Our results confirm that severe bottlenecks reduce the immune response of birds and highlight the need to avoid severe bottlenecks in the recovery programmes of endangered species. 相似文献

Summary Thymus lobes from three species of birds, Quelea quelea, Passer domesticus and Sturnus vulgaris, have been examined ultrastructurally. The component cell types are compared with their counterparts in mammalian thymus glands, and found to be similar. Greater differences exist between small, intermediate and enlarged lobes of one species than exist between species. Developing erythroid cells are present in most enlarging and some enlarged glands. They appear to be developing at the expense of lymphoid cells in some birds. The origin of these cells is discussed. Cells that are possible candidates for the production of some thymic hormones are also described.Formerly: Houghton Poultry Research Station, Houghton, Huntingdon, Cambs 相似文献

Increased levels of soluble activity of all three enzymes involved in polyadenylic acid metabolism were measured in PHA-stimulated versus normal lymphocytes. Poly(A)-polymerase and poly(A)-exonuclease values increased significantly (from 25.7 ± 4.2 (S.E.M.) to 53.5 ± 10.6 (S.E.M.), and from 334.6 ± 33.2 (S.E.M.) to 653.2 ± 53.4 (S.E. M.) respectively), while a moderate increase was observed in poly(A)-endonuclease (from 299.2 ± 33.8 (S.E.M.) to 403.0 ± 77.1 (S.E.M.). The above differences persisted after two fractionations of the crude cell extracts by ion exchange chromatography and molecular sieving, and could not be attributed to the competitive action of all three enzymes in the untreated extracts. Fractionation of the extracts of resting and stimulated cells on Sephadex G-75 revealed two molecular forms of poly(A)-polymerase activity.Abbreviations poly(A) or An

The use of human and veterinary pharmaceuticals is increasing. Over the past decade, there has been a proliferation of research into potential environmental impacts of pharmaceuticals in the environment. A Royal Society-supported seminar brought together experts from diverse scientific fields to discuss the risks posed by pharmaceuticals to wildlife. Recent analytical advances have revealed that pharmaceuticals are entering habitats via water, sewage, manure and animal carcases, and dispersing through food chains. Pharmaceuticals are designed to alter physiology at low doses and so can be particularly potent contaminants. The near extinction of Asian vultures following exposure to diclofenac is the key example where exposure to a pharmaceutical caused a population-level impact on non-target wildlife. However, more subtle changes to behaviour and physiology are rarely studied and poorly understood. Grand challenges for the future include developing more realistic exposure assessments for wildlife, assessing the impacts of mixtures of pharmaceuticals in combination with other environmental stressors and estimating the risks from pharmaceutical manufacturing and usage in developing countries. We concluded that an integration of diverse approaches is required to predict ‘unexpected’ risks; specifically, ecologically relevant, often long-term and non-lethal, consequences of pharmaceuticals in the environment for wildlife and ecosystems. 相似文献

During the last decades of the 20th century, studies on the vertebrate hematopoietic and immune systems have largely been performed, on mammalian models. The mouse has been the preferred material for several cogent reasons: (i) numerous well defined genetic strains are available; (ii) this species has been and still is instrumental in the study of gene activity through transgenesis; and (iii) in vitro culture techniques and in vivo assays for blood cells together with a wide array of antibodies and nucleic acid probes have been developed to investigate the cellular interactions occurring during hematopoiesis and immune reactivity. However, important and fundamental notions have emerged from using another higher vertebrate model, the avian embryo. The distinction among small lymphocytes of two populations, the T and B lymphocytes, endowed with different roles in adaptive immunity and dependant on different environments for their specification, has relied on experiments carried out in birds. The avian model has been critical for the analysis of the origin and traffic of hematopoietic precursor cells. It allowed the demonstration that both hematopoietic and angioblastic lineages arise from a common precursor, a cell whose existence had been proposed but never undoubtedly proven, the hemangioblast. Finally a form of thymus-dependant 'dominant' tolerance was demonstrated on the basis of experiments in the avian embryo, which initiated a large current of studies on 'regulatory T-cells'. Work in this model during the last decades has relied strongly on the construction of chimeras between quail and chick embryos that allowed a refined analysis of cell behaviour during embryogenesis. The novel perception of developmental neuropoiesis and immunopoiesis that followed proved to be largely applicable to lower and higher vertebrates, notably mammals. 相似文献

House wrens are typically socially monogamous, but frequently engage in extra-pair matings leading to multisired broods. Because females do not appear to acquire direct material benefits from their extra-pair mates, we tested the hypothesis that female house wrens derive indirect genetic benefits, such as enhanced immunocompetence (cutaneous immune activity, humoral immunity, and plasma bactericidal activity) and condition (size and haematoserological traits) for their offspring, by mating polyandrously. We predicted that extra-pair young (EPY) should show greater immune responsiveness and better body condition than their within-pair maternal half-siblings (WPY). Contrary to our prediction, WPY had higher cutaneous immune activity than their EPY brood-mates in two of three years, and EPY and WPY did not differ in measures of innate and humoral immunity. WPY also had higher albumin to γ-globulin ratios than EPY; however, they were not in better condition based on other measures. EPY had consistently longer tarsi (a measure of long-bone size) than their WPY half-siblings, suggesting that females engage in extra-pair copulations with larger males. The benefits of large structural size in the study population is unknown, but based on evidence from other passerines, we suggest that structural size may be an important fitness-related trait in house wrens. We conclude that our results are not consistent with the hypothesis that females gain immune-related benefits for their offspring by engaging in extra-pair matings. Further study of the fitness consequences of differences in tarsus length is needed to determine whether females acquire size-related benefits for their offspring from extra-pair mates. 相似文献

Post-mating sexually selected signals are expected to indicateparental quality. The good parent model assumes that expressionof the sexual character positively reflects parental ability, resulting in a potential link between the exaggeration of thecharacter and nestling-fitness traits. We tested this predictionin a population of a monogamous passerine, the magpie (Picapica), for which nest size is known to act as a post-matingsexually selected signal. We provided a food supplement to halfof the magpie nestlings in each nest, keeping the other halfas control nestlings. We found that food-supplemented nestlingsexperienced a significantly higher T-cell-mediated immune responseand a tendency to an increased condition index. In accordancewith the good parent model, we found that nest size was positivelyrelated to T-cell mediated immune response for control magpie, whereas this relationship was nonexistent in food-supplementednestlings. In addition, the difference in T-cell mediated immuneresponse between food-supplemented and control nestlings ofthe same nest was principally explained by nest size. Basedon our results, we discuss that magpie pairs with large nestsprovided their nestlings with higher quality food as comparedto pairs with smaller nests, nest size thereby being an indicatorof parental ability. To our knowledge, this is the first studyshowing a link between a post-mating sexually selected signaland nestling immunocompetence, a trait closely related to fitnessin birds. 相似文献
