Summary To reveal the effect of photoperiod on insects under low temperatures, dormant females of Chrysopa carnea were exposed for 3 months (November–January) to cold (7°±2.5°C) and to long- or short-day conditions (18L:6D or 12L:12D). They were thereafter activated under short-day conditions at 25°C.The samples differed considerably in the incidence of ovipositing females, duration of pre- and post-oviposition period, and fecundity. All parameters evidenced a considerably higher reproductive activity of insects chilled under short-day conditions. It was thus confirmed that adults of C. carnea perceive photoperiod at cold. The action of short photoperiod at cold does not impair the subsequent oviposition; by contrast it promotes future reproduction, apparently also due to photoperiod changes. Petrobia harti (Ewing) displays a facultative summer diapause in the egg stage. An adult female will lay only either diapause or non-diapause eggs throughout her life. In the laboratory, diapause eggs are laid by females which develop on detachedOxalis articulata leaves under long-day photoperiods and a relatively low temperature of 19±1°C.Diapause occurs in a stage of advanced embryonic development, in which the embryo appears U-shaped when observed from the egg's ventral side. Embryonic development ceased at this stage, and no further growth occurred when the eggs were kept under a relative humidity of about 70% in various photoperiod and temperature conditions. However, when the eggs were hydrated by placing them on wet cotton wool, development in some embryos (apparently in those which had completed their diapause development) proceeded beyond the U-stage at a rate similar to that in non-diapause embryos and the eggs hatched.Under LD 168 and 19±1°C or 26±1°C, the later from oviposition the period of egg hydration started, the higher the percentage of diapause termination. Under LD 168 and 26±1°C, diapause termination occurred mostly during the first week of hydration, while at 19±1°C mostly during the second and third week.At 26±1°C, in eggs hydrated 15 days but not 30 days from oviposition, the percentage of diapause termination was higher under a long-day than under a short-day photoperiod.Under LD 168, when the eggs were hydrated continuously from oviposition or starting 15, 30 and 45 days from it, the percentage of diapause termination was higher at 26±1°C than at 19±1°C.The percentage of diapause-laying adult females and the intensity of egg diapause were higher when the pre-imaginal mites grew at LD 1212 and 19±1°C, than when they grew at LD 168 and 26±1°C. This maternal effect on egg diapause intensity was expressed when the eggs were maintained at LD 1212 and 19±1°C but not at LD 168 and 26±1°C.  相似文献

Effects of photoperiod and cold exposure on diapause termination, post-diapause development and reproduction in Loxostege sticticalis were examined. Larvae were reared at diapause inducing condition (22 °C, L:D 12:12) consistently or transferred to long day photoperiod (L:D 16:8) and darkness (L:D 0:24) respectively, after entering into diapause. Diapause was terminated in approximately 40% of the larvae after 36 days, and no significant differences were observed between photoperiods, suggesting larval diapause was terminated spontaneously without being induced by photoperiods. Cold exposure significantly hastened diapause termination. The diapause termination incidence increased significantly with peaks of 98% at both 5 °C and 0 °C exposure for 30 days, as compared to 42% in controls not exposed to cold, while the mortality and number of days required for diapause termination decreased dramatically. The optimal low temperature exposure periods under 5 °C or 0 °C were 20 days and 30 days, showing a higher termination incidence and shorter time for diapause termination. This suggests that the low temperatures in winter play an important role in diapause termination under natural conditions. The threshold temperatures for post-diapause development in prepupae and pupae were 9.13 °C and 10.60 °C respectively, with corresponding accumulations of 125 and 200 degree-days. Adults that experienced larval diapause significantly delayed their first oviposition, oviposition period was prolonged, and the lifetime number of eggs laid was decreased, however both males and females have significantly longer longevity. The field validation of diapause termination, the degree-days model, and the relationship between diapause and migration in L. sticticalis were also discussed.  相似文献

The aim of this study was todetermine the biology and reproductivepotential of Euseius scutalis(Athias-Henriot) (Acari: Phytoseiidae) atvarious temperatures. These data are of valuein relation to mass rearing and the developmentof population dynamics models. The developmenttime, survival and fecundity of E.scutalis were determined at 20, 25 and30 ± 1 °C, 65 ± 10% RH and 16:8photoperiod. Total development times of E.scutalis were 6.7, 4.9 and 4.2 days at 20, 25and 30 ± 1 °C, respectively, using adiet of all life stages of the spider mite Panonychus citri (McGregor) (Acari:Tetranychidae). In general, preoviposition andpostoviposition periods of E. scutaliswere shortened as temperature increased, butthe oviposition period was longer at 25 °C than at 20 and 30 °C. Theshortest survival time of E. scutalis, at30 °C, was 10.1 days, followed by 23.7days and 28.6 days at 20 and 25 °C,respectively. Mated females laid on average1.1, 1.4 and 1.7 eggs per female per day and21.5, 39.7 and 17.1 eggs over their entire lifetime at 20, 25 and 30 °C, respectively.The sex ratios of E. scutalis were2.11/1, 2.24/1 and 2.11/1 female/male at 20, 25and 30 °C, respectively. The intrinsicrate of natural increase (r m) increasedwith rising temperatures from 0.166 at 20 °C to 0.295 females/female/day at 30 °C. The net reproductive rate (R 0)was highest at 25 °C (26.03females/female) and lowest at 30 °C(12.95 females/female). Mean generation time(T 0) was longest at 25 °C (17.50days) and shortest (9.53 days) at 30 °C.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments were conducted using organophosphate-resistant and susceptible strains of greenhouse whitefly, Trialeurodes vaporariorum Westwood, to assess age-specific vital rates in individually-held adults, and development and survival in preadults on three cotton cultivars at 27±1 °C, 50±10% RH, and a photoperiod of 16:8 (L:D). Female whiteflies lived longer than males, with a maximum life expectancy of 29 days. Heaviest egg laying occurred at ages between 7 and 18 days when individual whiteflies laid > 10 eggs/day. Greenhouse whitefly populations doubled weekly, with stable age distribution of 63% eggs, 28% larvae, 5% pupae, and 4% adults. Analysis of various life history parameters that combine aspects of survival, developmental rates, and fecundity indicated no consistent differences in reproductive fitness between the two greenhouse whitefly strains. Of the three cotton cultivars tested, Pima S-6 was most susceptible, Acala SJ-2 was intermediate and Gumbo 500 was most resistant to greenhouse whitefly. Resistance of Gumbo 500 was expressed as slower developmental rates, reduced survival to adulthood, lower reproductive rates, and lower intrinsic rate of increase.  相似文献

Phenological and some biological characteristics of Hippodamia (Adonia) variegata (Goeze) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), such as voltinism, hibernation, number of progeny produced by each generation, mating activity and sex ratio were studied, in order to evaluate the significance of this predator. The study of phenology was conducted in outdoor cages in Kifissia (Athens), during 1999--2001 and as prey was given Dysaphis crataegi (Kaltenbach). Hippodamia variegata completed seven generations between April and November. The hibernating population of H. variegata consisted of adults of 6th and 7th generations. The fecundity of the predator was studied under constant conditions [25 °C, 65% R.H. and 16:8(L:D)h photoperiod] in the laboratory and some population parameters were calculated: The total fecundity ranged between 789 and 1256 eggs, while the mean total fecundity was 959.6 eggs. The greatest proportion of eggs (45%) was oviposited in clutches of 11--20 eggs. The net reproductive value (R0) was found to be 425.9 females/female, the intrinsic rate of increase (rm) 0.178 females/female/day and the mean generation time (T) 34.0 days.  相似文献

Efficient storage of the biological controlagent Trichogramma ostriniae couldimprove current parasitoid production methodsby making the system more flexible andefficient. Initial studies compared emergencerates of T. ostriniae reared onSitotroga cerealella eggs held at 6 °C, 9 °C, 12 °C,15 °C, and 24 °C for up to 8 weeks after parasitism.At 15 °C, emergence occurred in <2 weeks.Emeregence was >80% for parasitized eggsstored at 9 °C and 12 °C for 4 and 6 weeksrespectively. Storage at 6 °C caused asignificant decline in emergence after 2 weeks. Subsequent trials focused on fitness of storedT. ostriniae. Percentage of emergedfemales parasitizing eggs, female longevity,and fecundity were quantified after storage.The percentage of females successfullyparasitizing O. nubilalis eggs wasgreatest for the 9 °C four-week treatment(100%). Compared to 24 °C controls, storage at12 °C for 6 weeks or at 9 °C for 8 weeks reduced thepercentage of females parasitizing. Longevityof females held in cold storage was generallyless than that of controls. Rates of parasitismby stored Trichogramma was generallysimilar to controls after 2 to 4 weeks' storageat 9 °C and 12 °C but declined with storage longerthan 4 weeks. Emergence of progeny of cold-storedfemales was lower than controls for alltreatments. The percentage of female progenyfrom cold stored females was comparable tocontrols up to 4 weeks of storage.  相似文献

The life history and demography of Amblyseius longispinosus Evans were studied under laboratory conditions 25–28°C and 65–85% RH using the red form of the twospotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch complex as prey. The entire development from egg to adult averaged 102.5 h for both sexes with a survival rate of 90.0%. Immature females consumed more prey eggs than males, averaging 7.9 and 6.4 eggs/day, respectively. The embryonic development time for male eggs was longer (average 45.2 h) than for female eggs (average 42.6 h). The average duration of succeeding stages did not differ between the sexes: larva, 15.7; protonymph, 21.1; and deutonymph, 23.0 h. Larvae were not observed to feed. Statistically significant differences between sexes were noted with respect to consumption of the deutonymphs (female, average 4.0±0.2; male, average 2.9±0.3 eggs/day) but not of the protonymphs. Mating occurred on the same day as adult emergence and was repeated several times during the reproductive life. Egg laying started on the second day after emergence. Parameters relating to oviposition were: fecundity, gross (50.7) and net (43.3) eggs/female; hatchability, 99.6% (gross) and 99.5% (net); the oviposition lasted at most 28 days and showed a peak in the first week. Net reproductive rate (R0) was 36.7 female offspring/female/generation time (T) of 9.0 days. The sex ratio was biased toward the females (71.9%), while the intrinsic rate of increase (rm) was 0.4 with a doubling time (DT) of 1.7 days. Males lived longer (36 days) than females (30 days) with a LT50 for males of 26 days and for females of 22 days.  相似文献

Temperature affects many life history parameters in poikilotherms. Temperature clearly affects development time and fecundity, which affect the intrinsic rate of increase. In haplodiploid mites, ambient temperature may also affect offspring sex ratio which, in turn, affects intrinsic rate of increase. The combined effect of all these processes determines the fitness of individual females. However, sex ratio also affects mating structure and, potentially, rate of local adaption. We investigated the direct effect of temperature variation on sex ratio, development time, and fecundity in the twospotted spider mite (Tetyranychus urticae), and calculated the effect of their interaction on mite intrinsic rate of increase. We conducted experiments at 2 temperatures and designed the experiment to separate pre-adult and adult sensitivity to temperature variation. Mites were reared from eggs to adult ecdysis at either 22°C or 32°C. Upon emergence as adults, these 2 groups were each split between 22°C and 32°C and allowed to oviposit. Not surprisingly, development from egg to adult was accelerated when mites were exposed to the higher temperature during offspring development, regardless of the temperature experienced by the mother during her development. Fecundity and the proportion of female offspring were affected by temperature only when mothers were exposed during both development and oviposition. About 12 offspring were gained and female bias was increased by 26% when the mother's development occurred at 22°C, whereas oviposition at 22°C added only 6 more offspring and increased female bias by only 7%. There was no correlation between sex ratio and fecundity; both were related to temperature but not to each other. Furthermore, development time, not fecundity or sex ratio, appeared to the main factor affecting the intrinsic rate of increase. Our results support other evidence that sex ratio varies independently of development time and fecundity.  相似文献

Development of the solitary parasitoidApanteles sp. groupultor in larvae ofEctomyelois ceratoniae was investigated at different constant temperatures. Temperature had a significant effect upon parasitoid development during both host-internal and host-external phases. The duration of the host-internal phase varied from 41 days at 15–17°C to 8.6 days at 29°C, the duration of the host-external phase varied from 16.5 days at 16–17°C to 5.4 days at 29°C. Effect of photoperiod upon parasite development and parasitization of hosts were determined under daily photophases, of 24, 16, 12, 8 and 0 hours. No significant differences in oviposition rate were found among the 5 treatments. In any photoperiod studied, the parasite progeny developed normally without entering diapause.   相似文献

We investigated the relationship between age and learning ability of femaleAscogaster reticulatusWatanabe, an egg-larval parasitoid of the smaller tea tortrixAdoxophyessp. (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae). Females 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, and 13 days old had higher fecundity than 0-day-old females and could associate tea leaf extract with the host egg mass through oviposition. Experienced females 1 ≈ 13 days old walked more than 10 cm along an extract-treated line while exhibiting the antennating response. However, the learned responses of 0-day-old females was significantly lower [mean = 1.4 ± 0.8 (S. E.) cm] than that of older females (1 ≈ 13 days). In considering the relation between fecundity and the learned response, a low response in 0-day-old females could be due to a low propensity by them to learn cues associated with host eggs. Average longevity was 12.0 ± 1.5 days, but even 13-day-old females could oviposit a large number of eggs and learn to associate the tea leaf extract with host presence. This suggests that females can learn as long as they are able to oviposit. This learning ability would be advantageous forA. reticulatusfemales throughout their lives.  相似文献

Generalist predatory mites are the common phytoseiid fauna in many agroecosystems, but little attention has been paid to their potential as biological control agents. In this study, we determined the functional responses of adult females of the generalist predator Neoseiulus barkeri Hughes on eggs, larvae, and adults of the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch, in the laboratory. Predation experiments were conducted on pepper leaf discs over a 24 h period at 25±1°C, 70–80% RH and 16L:8D photoperiod. Prey densities ranged 5 to 80 eggs, or 5 to 40 larvae, or 1 to 8 female adults of T. urticae per disc. The predation rate of N. barkeri adult females on T. urticae eggs was the same as on its larvae, but the predation rate on adult females was much lower. The role of generalist predatory mites in integrated and biological control of greenhouse pests was discussed.  相似文献

The effect of four constant temperatures (21, 26, 31 and 36°C) on biological (survival and duration of developmental stages, fecundity and longevity of females and sex ratio) and demographic parameters (R0, G, rm and ) of Tetranychus evansi was studied in the laboratory under controlled conditions: 75 ± 10% RH and 12L : 12D. The lower thermal threshold was 10.3°C. The shortest developmental time (6.3 days) was obtained at 36°C. Maximum fecundity was recorded at 31°C with 123.3 eggs per female. The cold-hardiness of Dermacentor marginatus using laboratory-reared offspring of ticks collected in Germany was characterized. Investigations of unfed stages revealed that adult ticks suffered 50% mortality at –10°C after 4–5 months, but larvae and nymphs suffered mortality within few days, whereas –15°C was lethal for all stages within a very short period. Larval hatch and moulting of engorged larvae and nymphs did not occur at 10°C. Embryonic development of eggs with larval hatch was considerably reduced by exposure of eggs to 10°C. Engorged females did not lay eggs at 10°C, the oviposition capability, however, persisted over 6 months at 10°C, 5 months at 5°C, 3 months at 0°C and 2 months at –10°C without substantial decrease of the oviposition capacity or reduction of viable eggs. These results present evidence that unfed adult ticks are the ecoepidemiologically most effective stages, which are capable to tolerate long and extremely cold winters without substantial impairment of the population density. It is also considered that engorged females interrupt their oviposition at low and subzero temperatures delaying it for months and so contribute in bypassing winter conditions. None of the stages survived supercooling indicating that D. marginatus is freeze intolerant. Mean supercooling point (SCP) ranged between –26°C in eggs and –12, 6°C in engorged females. Compared with eggs, the SCP of the other stages was significantly higher. In conclusion, the SCP is considered to have no predictive value in the context with cold-hardiness.  相似文献

Egg batches laid by females of Ixodes persulcatus (maintained under a photoperiod of L:D 20:4 before feeding) contained eggs of two sizes: numerous normal eggs of 0.578 × 0.421 mm and some giant eggs of 0.776×0.515 mm. Giant eggs were 32–34% greater in length and 22–24% greater in width than normal eggs. Females maintained under a short-day photoperiod (L:D 12:12) laid only normal eggs (0.588×0.417 mm). There were no differences between these eggs in viability and developmental time, but larvae hatched from giant eggs were larger (length of body 23–28% greater and of gnathosoma 12–15% greater) than larvae from normal eggs. This dimorphism of eggs and larvae was not sex determined, but may be a maternal photoperiodic effect.  相似文献

The current study examines the effect of photoperiod (16:08 or 12:12 h L:D) and diet (eggs of Ephestia kuehniella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Phycitidae) or the pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris) (Hemiptera: Aphididae)) on the development and reproduction of the multicoloured Asian lady beetle Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). A long-term laboratory population of H. axyridis (since 1998) and a melanic and non-melanic population originating from field collected individuals of H. axyridis in Belgium were used in this study. Long day conditions (16 h photoperiod) shortened development of the field populations with 2–3 days when compared with short day conditions (12 h photoperiod). Oviposition in the field populations was delayed by 1–3 months when reared at a 12 h photoperiod. Dissections indicated that the females were in reproductive diapause. As compared with live pea aphids, a diet consisting of E. kuehniella eggs yielded heavier adult body weights (up to 12%) and increased the number of egg laying days (by 45–169%) for both field populations at a 16 h photoperiod and lengthened adult life span (by 45–92%) under both light regimens. The morph types differed in their response to the foods offered in terms of developmental rate, pre-oviposition period and number of oviposition days. The laboratory and field strains responded differentially to regimens of food and photoperiod. The study indicated a greater nutritional plasticity of the non-melanic morphs which may offer them a competitive advantage that may in part explain the predominance of non-melanic morphs in newly colonized areas.  相似文献

The wild bruchid beetle, Bruchidius dorsalis Fahraeus (Coleoptera: Bruchidae), has a multivoltine life cycle and overwinters in several developmental stages in the middle part of Japan. We investigated the incidence of diapause under different conditions of photoperiod (from L8:D16 to L16:D8) and temperature (at 20 °C and 24 °C). Our experiments revealed the following results: (1) B. dorsalis entered diapause at the final (late fourth) instar larva under short photoperiods, (2) the larval diapause incidence was dependent on temperature (critical photoperiods were 12.5 h at 20 °C and 12 h at 24 °C), (3) some individuals did not enter diapause under short-photoperiod conditions at 24 °C, and (4) the sensitive stages to the photoperiod were from the late egg stage to the early first instar larva. Based on these results, we discuss not only the evolution of a complex overwintering strategy inB. dorsalis but also the domestication process of stored-bean pests.  相似文献

Encapsulation of Epidinocarsis lopezi (De Santis) (Hymenoptera, Encyrtidae) by the cassava mealybug Phenacoccus manihoti Matile-Ferrero (Homoptera, Pseudococcidae) was studied in the laboratory under controlled conditions (thermohygrometry and photoperiod as close as possible to field conditions): temperature, 26±1 °C; relative humidity, 80±10%; photoperiod, 12 h. Encapsulation began with melanin deposits forming on the parasitoid envelopes at different developmental stages: egg chorion and cuticle of L2 and L3 larvae. It led to the formation of an amorphous capsule from which parasitoids could occasionally escape. Encapsulation affected 26.7% of all parasitoids in solitary parasitism. There was a highly significant increase in the level of encapsulation (83.3%) in superparasitism. Encapsulation was more likely when egg laying occurred in the median body zone of host mealybugs but it was not related either to the sequence of eggs deposited or to the duration of egg laying. These results have significant implications for the assessment of E. lopezi parasitoid efficiency and should be considered in the current biological control program on P. manihoti in Africa.

Résumé L'encapsulement d'Epidinocarsis lopezi (De Santis) (Hyménoptère, Encyrtidae) par la cochenille du manioc Phenacoccus manihoti Matile-Ferrero (Homoptère, Pseudococcidae) a été étudié au laboratoire en conditions standardisées de thermohygrométrie et de photopériode aussi proches que possible de celle existant sur le terrain: température: 26±1 °C; hygrométrie relative: 80±10%; photopériode: 12 heures.Le phénomène débute par un dépot de mélanine sur les enveloppes du parasitoïde à différents stades de son développement: chorion de l'uf ou cuticule des larves L2 et L3. Il aboutit à la formation d'une capsule amorphe dont le parasitoïde parvient parfois à s'échapper. L'encapsulement affectant 26,7% des individus en situation de parasitisme solitaire est très significativement augmenté dans le cas de superparasitisme où ce taux concerne jusqu'à 83,3% des Hyménoptères en développement mais dans ces situations de superparasitisme, un Hyménoptère adulte est toujours obtenu d'une cochenille infestée.L'encapsulement est par ailleurs favorisé lorsque la ponte du parasitoïde s'effectue dans la région médiane de la cochenille mais ne dépend pas du rang de ponte des ufs et de la durée de la piqûre.Nos résultats, confirmés par des travaux de terrain au Congo, indiquent qu'un tel taux d'encapsulement a une incidence sur l'efficacité parasitaire d'Epidinocarsis lopezi et qu'il doit être pris en considération dans le progamme de lutte biologique en cours en Afrique contre Phenacoccus manihoti.

The developmental threshold and heat-unit requirements for larval eclosion of the winter moth, Operophtera brumata (L.) [Lepidoptera: Geometridae], were determined from experiments involving eggs exposed to various chilling and warming treatments. The developmental threshold was determined to be 4 °C. Eggs which were chilled below the developmental threshold required fewer heat-units for larval eclosion than did eggs not given a chill treatment. Eggs cultured at 14 °C required 470 (±47) degree-days for 50% larval eclosion. However, eggs chilled for 2 weeks at 1 °C and subsequently placed at 14 °C required 382 (±33) degree-days while eggs chilled for 12 weeks at 1 °C and subsequently placed at 14 °C required 156 (±12) degree-days. The results are discussed in relation to chilling intensity, diapause, and physiological-time models.
Résumé Le seuil de développement et la quantité de chaleur nécessaires pour l'éclosion larvaire chez Operophtera brumata (L.) (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) ont été déterminés en exposant les oeufs à différents régimes de refroidissement suivis de périodes de réchauffement. Le seuil de développement déterminé est de 4 °C. Les oeufs placés d'abord à des températures inférieures à celle du seuil de développement demandent moins de quantité de chaleur pour l'éclosion larvaire, que les oeufs qui n'ont pas été exposés à de basses températures. Les oeufs maintenus à 14 °C demandent 470 (±47) degrés-jours pour permettre 50% d'éclosion. Cependant, des oeufs maintenus pendant 2 semaines à 1 °C, puis à 14 °C, exigent 382 (±33) degrés-jours; ceux placés pendant 12 semaines à 1 °C, puis à 14 °C, en exigent 156 (±12). Les résultats sont discutés en relation avec l'intensité du refroidissement, la diapause et les modèles physiologico-temporels.

In this article, the ontogeny and reproductive biology of Diadegma semiclausum (Hym.: Ichneumonidae), an important parasitoid of Plutella xylostella (Lep.: Plutellidae) are described in detail. We did dissect parasitized P. xylostella larvae in phosphate-buffered saline and determine the external morphology of its parasitoid at all developmental stages. The developmental duration of its immature stages, adult longevity, total oviposition period and fecundity of the parasitoid are determined at 24 ± 1 °C, 65  ±  5% R.H., and a photoperiod of 16:8 h L:D. The mean duration of egg and larval stages is 9.56 days and the prepupa and pupa stages last for 8.27 days. In average, female longevity is 1.31 times longer than that of males, and females lay 300 eggs in total. The peak of D. semiclausum oviposition is on the eighth day after mating. The egg loading pattern of D. semiclausum was investigated to determine the parasitoid ‘ovigeny index’ throughout the female's parasitoid lifetime. Initial egg load in immature females (<2 h age) is 1.45 per female and the mean lifetime potential fecundity (total immature and mature oocytes), at four interval ages, is 34. With an ovigeny index value of 0.038, D. semiclausum is considered moderately to strongly synovigenic. In the absence of the host, after 3 days, the number of eggs is decreased in D. semiclausum. Our results demonstrated that there is a negative relation between the ovigeny index and egg resorption in this parasitoid.  相似文献
