Summary We examined effects of exogenous androgen (testosterone and dihydrotestosterone) on vocalizations of ovariectomized, adult female South African clawed frogs,Xenopus laevis. When paired with sexually active males, all ovariectomized females exhibited ticking, the unreceptive or release call. Ticking consists of low amplitude, regularly spaced clicks with a mean interclick interval of 154 ms. When androgen-treated and paired with sexually active males, these ovariectomized females also exhibited an aberrant call (atypical ticking) in which click multiples replaced the single clicks of ticking. Mean ICI's for atypical ticking were 37 ms for click doublets and 22 ms for click quadruplets. Androgen treatment decreased the total time spent vocalizing (typical and atypical ticking) by ovariectomized females.All androgen-treated females were then tested repeatedly with sexually receptive females in an attempt to elicit the male-typical vocalization, mate calling. Six of 17 females did not vocalize at all, even when gonadotropin injected. Eight females gave rapid (mean ICI, 36 ms) trains of clicks in an irregular temporal pattern (tick-like calls). Three females gave brief trills with alternating fast and slow components. Comparison of mate calllike vocalizations of androgen-treated females to mate calling of males reveals that calls in females are considerably shorter in duration (female: 0.32 min versus male: 45 min) and slower in tempo (ICI's; fast trill, female: 21 ms, male: 14 ms; slow trill, female: 36 ms, male: 28 ms). In animal communication, elaborate signals have been shown to be under sexual selection and often to reliably indicate a signaler's quality, condition, or motivation. For instance, the performance of physically challenging signals such as trills – i.e. rapidly repeated elements of broad frequency bandwidth – is considered to reflect signaler quality. Nightingales Luscinia megarhynchos are renowned for their outstanding song repertoire sizes, and most songs include a variety of complex trills. In the present study, we examined whether performance of trills can reliably reflect male quality. We show that vocal performance of trills predicts the age of a male. Older males sang trills that were closer to the performance limit than did younger males. Moreover, males with narrower beaks sang more consistent trills than did males with wider beaks. Vocal performance of trills, however, did not significantly predict other measures of biometric quality such as body size or body condition of the males. The findings suggest that receivers could benefit from the predictive value of physically demanding song traits in assessing age as an important quality component of potential mates or rivals. Particularly in species with high singing versatility, signaler assessment based on readily assessable structures may be adaptive, as this will allow receivers to quickly gather relevant information about the singer without attending to the full song repertoire.  相似文献

The number of muscle fibers in the vocal organ of the adult male African clawed frog, Xenopus laevis, exceeds that of adult females. This sex difference is the result of rapid fiber addition in males between the end of metamorphosis, post-metamorphic stage 0 (PM0) and PM2. At PM0, male and female frogs have similar numbers of laryngeal muscle fibers. Males then add more muscle fibers than females and achieve an adult value that is 1.7 times the female number. Males castrated at PM0 have the same fiber number as females. Ovariectomy at PM0 does not alter muscle fiber addition in females. Gonadectomy at PM2 has no effect on fiber addition in either sex. Females attain masculine muscle fiber number if their ovaries are replaced with a testis at metamorphosis. Exogenous testosterone treatment at PM0 significantly increases fiber number in females but not in males. Exogenous testosterone given at PM2 has no effect on fiber number in females but decreases fiber number in males. We conclude that the testes are necessary for the marked addition of laryngeal muscle fibers seen in male X. laevis between PM0 and PM2. The masculine pattern of muscle fiber addition can be induced in females provided with a testis. Androgen secretion from the testes most probably accounts for masculinization of laryngeal muscle fiber number. After PM2, androgens are no longer necessary for muscle fiber addition and cannot increase fiber number in females.  相似文献

Physically challenging signals are likely to honestly indicate signaler quality. In trilled bird song two physically challenging parameters are vocal deviation (the speed of sound frequency modulation) and trill consistency (how precisely syllables are repeated). As predicted, in several species, they correlate with male quality, are preferred by females, and/or function in male-male signaling. Species may experience different selective pressures on their songs, however; for instance, there may be opposing selection between song complexity and song performance difficulty, such that in species where song complexity is strongly selected, there may not be strong selection on performance-based traits. I tested whether vocal deviation and trill consistency are signals of male quality in house wrens (Troglodytes aedon), a species with complex song structure. Males’ singing ability did not correlate with male quality, except that older males sang with higher trill consistency, and males with more consistent trills responded more aggressively to playback (although a previous study found no effect of stimulus trill consistency on males’ responses to playback). Males singing more challenging songs did not gain in polygyny, extra-pair paternity, or annual reproductive success. Moreover, none of the standard male quality measures I investigated correlated with mating or reproductive success. I conclude that vocal deviation and trill consistency do not signal male quality in this species.  相似文献

Vocal signals mediate social relationships, and among networks of territorial animals, information is often shared via broadcast vocalizations. Anthropogenic noise may disrupt communication among individuals within networks, as animals change the way they vocalize in noise. Furthermore, constraints on signal transmission, including frequency masking and distance, may affect information exchange following a disruption in social networks. We tested the hypothesis that signaling interactions within networks of breeding male and female house wrens (Troglodytes aedon) depend on distance, ambient noise, and receiver nesting stage. We used playback experiments to simulate territorial intrusions with and without noise playbacks on the territories of established males and simultaneously recorded the vocal responses of neighbors. To examine whether intrusions impacted interactions between males, we used randomization tests to determine whether treatment, distance, noise, or nesting stage affected vocal coordination between challenged and neighboring males. We also quantified singing patterns to explore whether intrusions on territories of challenged males affected singing by males and females on neighboring territories. Males sang at the lowest rates and were less likely to overlap songs with the challenged male when their partner was laying, compared to males during early and late nesting stages. Noise and distance did not affect vocal coordination or male singing rates. Fewer females sang during the intruder-only treatment compared to the control and intrusions with noise. Added noise in the territories of challenged males may have masked signals, and as a result, females only changed their behavior during the intruder-only treatment. Our results suggest that the fertility of breeding partners may be more important to males than short-term changes on rival male territories. Elevated noise did little to alter male responses to threats within networks. Females appeared to eavesdrop on interactions involving neighboring males, but noise may have prevented detection of their interactions.  相似文献

Treatment of nestling zebra finches with estradiol benzoate (EB) has been shown to masculinize singing in females and demasculinize copulatory behavior in males, suggesting that sexual differentiation of these behaviors is under hormonal control such that testicular hormones induce the capacity for song and ovarian hormones suppress the capacity for mounting. Two experiments were carried out to obtain a more complete picture of sexual differentiation in this species. In Experiment 1, nestlings were injected daily for the first 2 weeks after hatching with testosterone propionate (TP), dihydrotestosterone propionate (DHTP), or a combination of DHTP and EB. As adults, birds were gonadectomized and implanted with TP prior to testing, then tested again after implantation with EB. Singing was not increased in females by any of the treatments. The only effect of either TP or DHTP given alone was defeminization of female proceptive behavior by DHTP. Thus androgens appear to have less influence than estrogens on sexual differentiation of behavior in this species. The combination of DHTP and EB demasculinized mounting in males. In Experiment 2, nestlings were gonadectomized at 7-9 days of age and implanted with TP prior to testing in adulthood. Early gonadectomy had little effect on later behavior; early castrated males sang, danced, and copulated normally and early ovariectomized females neither sang nor mounted.  相似文献

Studies on singing behavior in Oscine focus essentially on males and are carried out during the breeding season. Singing in females appears rare and is not well documented. However, females of several species can produce a complex song. Does this lack of data correspond to a real difference in males and females or to a non appropriate context of observation? We studied the vocal and social behavior of captive male and female European starlings during two periods: breeding and non-breeding periods. Our results indicated that females sang mostly in a non-breeding context: their singing behavior was strongly diminished when nestboxes were present in the aviary. Moreover, females sang more frequently when their closest neighbor was a female whereas males sang mostly when they had no immediate neighbor. These results indicate a difference between males and females for the context of song production.  相似文献

In the majority of songbird species, males have repertoires of multiple song types used for mate attraction and territory defence. The wood‐warblers (family Parulidae) are a diverse family of songbirds in which males of many migratory species use different song types or patterns of song delivery (known as ‘singing modes’) depending on context. The vocal behaviour of most tropical resident warblers remains undescribed, although these species differ ecologically and behaviourally from migratory species, and may therefore differ in their vocal behaviour. We test whether male Rufous‐capped Warblers Basileuterus rufifrons use distinct singing modes by examining song structure and context‐dependent variation in their songs. We recorded multiple song bouts from 50 male Warblers in a Costa Rican population over 3 years to describe seasonal, diel and annual variation in song structure and vocal behaviour. We found that Rufous‐capped Warbler songs are complex, with many syllable types shared both within and between males’ repertoires. Males varied their song output depending on context: they sang long songs at a high rate at dawn and during the breeding season, and shortened songs in the presence of a vocalizing female mate. Unlike many migratory species, Rufous‐capped Warblers do not appear to have different singing modes; they did not change the song variants used or the pattern of song delivery according to time of day, season or female vocal activity. Our research provides the first detailed vocal analysis of any Basileuterus warbler species, and enhances our understanding of the evolution of repertoire specialization in tropical resident songbirds.  相似文献

Our previous research revealed dramatic increases in dopaminergic function in vocal control and auditory nuclei in male zebra finches during the period of song learning. Such increases were not seen in the hypothalamic areas examined. In the current study, we manipulated dopamine receptor function during this period to determine how this might affect later singing behavior. Males were implanted with osmotic minipumps providing 0, 0.5, or 5 microg/g/day of the mixed D1/D2 dopamine receptor antagonist cis-flupenthixol from day 45 until day 57. At approximately 86 days of age, males were given subcutaneous silastic implants containing a maintenance dose of androgen, in case antagonist treatment interfered with adult androgen secretion. One week later, they began a series of three weekly tests to determine if this early treatment affected courtship singing. Males treated with the low dose of cis-flupenthixol showed profound decrements in courtship singing and copulatory behavior. Unlike saline-treated controls, low-dose males sang to females infrequently. High-intensity courtship displays in which males dance towards females while singing were most affected. Despite their decreased courtship singing, low-dose males were interested in females. They approached females as frequently as males in the other two groups, but antagonist-treated males were less likely to follow females if they moved. Low-dose males also attempted to mount females significantly less often than high-dose males. High-dose males groomed significantly less frequently than males in the other two groups. Thus, brief early treatment with cis-flupenthixol had profound and long-lasting effects on female-directed singing and on copulatory behavior, despite androgen treatment.  相似文献

In Xenopus laevis frogs, sex differences in adult laryngeal synapses contribute to sex differences in vocal behavior. This study explores the development of sex differences in types of neuromuscular synapses and the development and hormone regulation of sex differences in transmitter release. Synapses in the juvenile larynx have characteristics not found in adults: juvenile muscle fibers can produce subthreshold or suprathreshold potentials in response to the same strength of nerve stimulation and can also produce multiple spikes to a single nerve stimulus. Juvenile laryngeal muscle also contains the same synapse types (I, II, and III) as are found in adult laryngeal muscle. The distribution of laryngeal synapse types in juveniles is less sexually dimorphic than the distribution in adults. Analysis of quantal content indicates that laryngeal synapses characteristically release low amounts of transmitter prior to sexual differentiation. Quantal content values from male and female juveniles are similar to values for adult males and are lower than values for adult females. When juveniles are gonadectomized and treated with exogenous estrogen, quantal content values increase significantly, suggesting that this hormone may increase transmitter release at laryngeal synapses during development. Gonadectomy alone does not affect quantal content of laryngeal synapses in either sex. Androgen treatment decreases quantal content in juvenile females but not males; the effect is opposite to and smaller than that of estrogen. Thus, muscle fiber responses to nerve stimulation and transmitter release are not sexually dimorphic in juvenile larynges. The plainfin midshipman fish Porichthys notatus has both interand intra-sexual dimorphism in the sound-producing (vocal or sonic) muscles attached to the swimbladder wall. The “Type I” and “Type II” male morphs differ in that dramatic structural changes related to sexual maturity occur in the mass, the area of mitochondria-filled sarcoplasm, and the myofiber number of the sonic muscles of Type I males, but not in those of Type II males (nor of females). Androgen implantation for 9 weeks markedly increased the relative sonic muscle size in juvenile males, juvenile females, and Type II males, whereas estradiol or cholesterol treatment did not. The principal androgen effect on myofiber structure was an increase in the area of mitochondria-filled sarcoplasm. The ratio of sarcoplasm area to myofibril area (Sr/Mf) increased by 1.4- to 2-fold in myofibers of all androgen-treated groups, with the greatest structural change occurring in juvenile males. When androgen implants were removed from juvenile males, the muscle mass and Sr/Mf ratio reverted toward the unimplanted juvenile phenotype. Total fiber number in sonic muscle increased significantly in juvenile males following androgen implantation but did not detectably change in juvenile females or Type II males. These results suggest: (1) sonic muscle in Porichthys notatus is an androgen target tissue, (2) fiber structure and fiber number are androgen-sensitive features, and (3) there exist sex- and morph-specific patterns of sonic muscle responsiveness to androgen implants. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Phenotypic characters with a complex physical basis may have a correspondingly complex evolutionary history. Males in the “bee” hummingbird clade court females with sound from tail‐feathers, which flutter during display dives. On a phylogeny of 35 species, flutter sound frequency evolves as a gradual, continuous character on most branches. But on at least six internal branches fall two types of major, saltational changes: mode of flutter changes, or the feather that is the sound source changes, causing frequency to jump from one discrete value to another. In addition to their tail “instruments,” males also court females with sound from their syrinx and wing feathers, and may transfer or switch instruments over evolutionary time. In support of this, we found a negative phylogenetic correlation between presence of wing trills and singing. We hypothesize this transference occurs because wing trills and vocal songs serve similar functions and are thus redundant. There are also three independent origins of self‐convergence of multiple signals, in which the same species produces both a vocal (sung) frequency sweep, and a highly similar nonvocal sound. Moreover, production of vocal, learned song has been lost repeatedly. Male bee hummingbirds court females with a diverse, coevolving array of acoustic traits.  相似文献

Pregnant female rats were administered either the aromatization inhibitor ATD (1,4,6-androstatriene-3,17-dione) or propylene glycol from Days 10 to 21 of gestation. On the day of birth one-half of the offspring from each group were gonadectomized. The remaining offspring were gonadectomized 35 days after birth. When adult the animals were given eight weekly mating tests following treatment with 2 or 8 μg of estradiol benzoate (EB) and 25 or 200 μg of progesterone (P). The probability of lordotic behavior as well as the frequency of ear-wiggle and hop and dart responses was measured. Prenatal ATD treatment resulted in a slight increase in lordotic behavior in the males. Lordotic potential was greatly facilitated by castration at birth. ATD treatment also increased the frequency of proceptive behaviors in males and combined ATD treatment and neonatal castration produced a dramatic increase in these behaviors. Prenatal ATD treatment and neonatal ovariectomy had only modest effects on the display of receptive and proceptive behaviors in females. Two weeks after the last test for female mating behaviors, the animals received daily injections of 200 μg of testosterone propionate. Four weekly tests for male-typical responses were given starting 1 week after the first injection. Prenatal ATD treatment did not markedly affect masculine behavior in the males. Castration at birth eliminated the ejaculatory response and reduced the frequency of mounting and intromission behavior. Prenatal ATD treatment and ovariectomy at birth had no appreciable effects on the display of male-typical behaviors in the females. Testosterone-stimulated masculine behavior of the female was similar to that of the male castrated at birth.  相似文献

Deterministic rules, rather than experience, are thought to regulate the development of simple behaviors in vertebrates and invertebrates. We revisited this issue through examination of the sexually distinct vocalizations of African clawed frogs (Xenopus laevis), a reproductive behavior used by sexually mature males and females. We discovered that, as expected for simple behavior, female vocalizations develop through deterministic rules. The rare calls of juvenile females are indistinguishable from those of adult females. The vocal pathways of juvenile females, as measured by the contractile properties of the laryngeal muscles (the vocal muscles) and the laryngeal motoneuron somata (vocal motoneurons) size, are the developmental default and do not differentiate as they mature. Male Xenopus, in contrast, produce extensive vocalizations with rudimentary acoustic structure before reaching sexual maturity. Moreover, the functional properties of the vocal central pattern generator mature before muscle fibers and motoneuron size are fully masculinized. The results suggest that neuronal activity during development may be important in organizing the contractile properties of the muscle fibers in male, but not in female Xenopus. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Female songbirds are thought to assess males based on aspectsof song, such as repertoire size or amount of singing, thatcould potentially provide information about male quality. Arelatively unexplored aspect of song that also might serve asan assessment signal is a male's ability to perform physicallychallenging songs. Trilled songs, such as those produced byswamp sparrows (Melospiza georgiana), present males with a performancechallenge because trills require rapid and precise coordinationof vocal tract movements, resulting in a trade-off between trillrate and frequency bandwidth. This trade-off defines a constrainton song production observed as a triangular distribution inacoustic space of trill rate by frequency bandwidth, with anupper boundary that represents a performance limit. Given thisbackground on song production constraints, we are able to identifya priori which songs are performed with a higher degree of proficiencyand, thus, which songs should be more attractive to females.We determined the performance limit for a population of swampsparrows and measured how well individual males performed songsrelative to this limit ("vocal performance"). We then comparedfemale solicitation responses to high-performance versus low-performanceversions of the same song type produced by different males.Females displayed significantly more to high-performance songsthan to low-performance songs, supporting the hypothesis thatfemales use vocal performance to assess males.  相似文献

We investigated how individual variation in social behaviour among group members interacts to affect social structure and development of reproductive skills. We randomly assigned juvenile male and juvenile and adult female cowbirds to four aviaries and observed patterns of singing and social assortment in each. Although social composition of each aviary was the same, juvenile males in one aviary engaged in more intra- and intersexual affiliation and singing interactions. We designed a series of rotations of individuals among the aviaries to determine which individual traits were responsible for the observed group differences. First, we rotated groups of three males from a less interactive aviary into a more interactive aviary, replacing interactive males. Within 4 days, the rotated males changed their behaviour to match the aviary into which they had been moved (i.e. interactive males became less interactive and vice versa). Next, we rotated juvenile females through the aviaries. After this rotation, the behaviour of the juvenile females remained the same, but the behaviour of the resident males changed, becoming like the males in the females' former aviaries (i.e. when juvenile females were moved from an interactive aviary into a noninteractive aviary, the males in the new aviary became more interactive and vice versa). Across the aviaries, the amount of female-male associations correlated positively with male-male competition. During the breeding season, males that had experienced more competition over the year received more copulations than males that had experienced little competition. Furthermore, more eggs were produced in aviaries containing competitive males than in aviaries containing less competitive males. Past work has shown that females can influence male vocal development; here we show that they can also influence male social development. Kloss gibbons (Hylobates klossii) are endemic to the Mentawai Islands in Indonesia and are one of only two gibbon species in which mated pairs do not sing duets. This is the first long-term study of the factors influencing the singing activity of Kloss gibbons within a northern Siberut Island population and follows two previous studies in central Siberut nearly 30 years ago. We collected data on the presence/absence of male and female singing within the study area on 198 days and within a focal group on 47 days. Rainfall during the time period in which they normally sing inhibits singing in both males and females. Our study supports the hypothesis that male and female songs function in intrasexual resource defence, as singing is associated with singing by same-sex neighbours, and same-sex choruses are more likely to occur after one or more days of silence (from that sex), suggesting there is pressure for individuals to communicate with same-sex neighbours regularly. Singing was not coordinated within a mated pair, suggesting that vocal coordination of the pair has been lost with the loss of the duet and that Kloss gibbon songs do not convey information to neighbours about the strength of the pair bond. On days when males sang predawn, females were more likely to sing after dawn and earlier in the morning. Additionally, the number of groups singing in female choruses was positively associated with the number of males that had sung in the predawn male chorus. We suggest that female songs have an intersexual territory defence as well as an intrasexual function.  相似文献

In communication, animals often use complex signals with different traits carrying different information. In the song of some songbirds, both trills and song overlapping signal arousal or the readiness to escalate a contest in male‐male interactions, yet they also differ inherently from each other. Song overlapping is restricted to interactions and has a clear directive function as the songs are timed specifically to the songs of a counterpart. Trills, however, can be used without opponents actively singing and do not have such a directional character unless when combined with directed traits. This difference raises the question whether trills can enhance the agonistic function of song overlapping when being used simultaneously. Here, we exposed male nightingales (Luscinia megarhynchos) prior to pairing to overlapping playback treatments differing in the presence or absence of rapid broadband trills. Males responded differently to the two playback treatments suggesting that song overlapping and rapid broadband trills have some synergistic effects. Consequently, the separate or simultaneous use of trills and of song overlapping may allow males to adjust information encoded in their singing on a fine scale. Furthermore, males that remained unpaired throughout the breeding season responded differently to the playbacks than did subsequently paired males, emphasizing the implications of differences in territory defence behaviour on males subsequent pairing success.  相似文献

This study investigated the androgen specificity of aggressive and sexual behavior in the lizard Anolis carolinensis and the capacity of females of this species to exhibit male-typical copulation. Gonadectomized males and females were injected with testosterone propionate (TP) or dihydrotestosterone propionate (DHTP) or were implanted with Silastic tubing containing TP or DHTP. Either TP or DHTP activated male-typical sexual behavior in both males and females and activated aggressive behavior in males; DHTP activated aggressive behavior in females. Thus conversion of androgen to estrogen is not essential for these behavior patterns, and endogenous dihydrotestosterone may be important. TP but not DHTP stimulated receptivity in females, suggesting that conversion of testosterone to estrogen may underlie TP-stimulated receptivity. Females treated with TP did not differ from males in their display of male-typical courtship, neck-clasping, and intromission.  相似文献

This experiment was designed to determine the contribution, if any, of posthatching gonadal hormones to sexual differentiation of behavior in Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica). Males and females were gonadectomized or sham-operated (controls) prior to age 7 days posthatching. At age 4-9 weeks controls were gonadectomized. All birds were then given 2 weeks of testosterone propionate injections and tested for sexual behavior with female partners. Neonatally gonadectomized females exhibited more male-typical copulatory behavior than control females, but this effect was not statistically significant. Neonatal gonadectomy had no effect on males, and neonatally gonadectomized males exhibited significantly more male-typical copulatory behavior than neonatally gonadectomized females. Although the process of sexual differentiation may extend to a minor degree into the posthatching period in females, nonetheless it is largely complete at hatching in this species.  相似文献
