The occurrence of hide damage light flecks and spots was determined on tanned hides from 28 herds during a period of 8 to 12 months. Light flecks and spots are described as small areas of grain loss up to 3 mm in diameter that are seen on dyed crust cattle leather. Damage was found on 75.8% of all hides. The neck and shoulders were the anatomical region with the highest prevalence of damage. Sixty-eight per cent of all hides had light flecks and spots in this region. The forelimbs and dewlap were the anatomical region with the second highest occurrence with a prevalence of 39.1%. This distribution corresponded to the known distribution of lice in cattle. No significant differences were observed in age, sex, prevalence of lice in the herd assessed in March or infestations with different lice species. The frequency of light flecks and spots varied significantly during the year. The frequency was highest in the late winter and early spring, decreased significantly during the summer and was lowest in the autumn. This variation supported the importance of lice in the development of light flecks and spots and suggested a relatively long healing period for the damages induced by lice.  相似文献

The skin histology and the scanning electron microscope morphology of the hide defect light flecks and spots after tanning were studied in 11 steers infested with biting lice (Damalinia bovis). Nine steers from herds free of lice were used as controls. Skin biopsies from 6 of the animals in the lice infested group showed mild to moderate hyperkeratosis and moderate perivascular to diffuse dermatitis with infiltration of mainly mononuclear cells and some eosinophilic granulocytes. The steers were slaughtered at an age of 18 to 23 months. Light flecks and spots occurred on all examined hides from the infested group after tanning. No examined hides from the control group demonstrated similar damage. Both light microscopic examination of sections of tanned hide with light flecks and spots and scanning electron microscopy of the same defects showed superficial grain loss and craters with a irregular fibre base encircled by smooth and intact grain.  相似文献

The purpose of this field study was to develop and evaluate eradication as a strategy to control lice in cattle. Thirty-three herds of cattle were selected and observed during a period of two and a half years. Before eradication, biting lice (Damalinia bovis) were present in 94% of the herds and 27% of the animals. Sucking lice (Linognathus vituli) were present in 42% of the herds and 5% of the animals. These levels were very similar to those reported from other countries in Northern Europe.  相似文献

A year-long survey was made of commercial dairy herds in New York for cattle lice (Anoplura and Mallophaga). All herds were infested with lice. The cattle bitting louse, Bovicola bovis (L.), accounted for about 90% of the observed infestations; infestations of mature animals were most common during the winter months, especially March (26% infested); and infestation rates of calves were high (30-45%) from January through June. Cows that were housed in stanchion barns were about twice as likely to be infested (24.7%) as were those in free stalls (11.1%). Calves housed in individual outdoor hutches had substantially lower infestation rates (4.5%) than calves maintained inside barns in collective stalls and pens (46.0%).  相似文献

The success of a large-scale eradication programme against sarcoptic mange was evaluated in piglet producing herds belonging to the health class LSO 2000. These farms are monitored to be free from sarcoptic mange, swine enzootic pneumoniae, swine dysentery and progressive atrophic rhinitis. The local veterinarians were instructed to eradicate sarcoptic mange from the herds by 2 ivermectin injections 14 days apart or 3 treatments with phoxim pour-on 6 days apart before the farms were able to join the health class. The study consisted of a questionnaire administered to the farmers, farm visits and follow-ups associated with the regular control of the health class. A questionnaire was sent to all of the 379 accepted farrowing farms. Altogether 323 farmers had initiated an eradication programme at least 7 months before the questionnaire was distributed and 96% of them believed that the mange eradication programme had been successful. In most of the successful herds (90%), the local veterinarian had treated the animals by the recommended methods, and the majority of the farmers (88%) had cleaned and sprayed the pens with insecticides on the days of treatment. Three out of the 7 unsuccessful farms had employed methods other than those recommended. Twenty-five herds were randomly selected for an intensified control. The rubbing index was ≤0.1 in all herds visited, indicating freedom from mange. Sows or gilts, 15–20 animals per farm, were skin scraped and no Sarcoptes scabiei was found. The same animals were blood sampled and serum antibodies to S. scabiei were measured by an indirect ELISA. All except 1 farm had low optical density (OD) values in most of the samples. The owner of that farm had become uncertain about the mange status of the herd and had recently retreated all animals with acaricides. The number of complaints about mange in the finishing units buying health class feeder pigs was low. The study demonstrates that it is possible to run an eradication programme against sarcoptic mange, in which a large number of farmers together with their veterinarians participate. It is possible to eradicate mange not only at the herd but also at the population level. The ELISA test employed proved to be a possible tool to monitor the efficacy of mange-eradication programmes.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to 1) screen all sow herds in a region for M. hyopneumoniae, 2) to effectuate an eradication programme in all those herds which were shown to be infected with M. hyopneumoniae, and 3) to follow the success of the screening and the eradication programmes. The ultimate goal was to eradicate M. hyopneumoniae from all member herds of a cooperative slaughterhouse (153 farrowing herds + 85 farrowing-to-finishing herds + 150 specialised finishing herds) before year 2000. During 1998 and 1999, a total of 5067 colostral whey and 755 serum samples (mean, 25 samples/herd) were collected from sow herds and analysed for antibodies to M. hyopneumoniae by ELISA. Antibodies were detected in 208 (3.6%) samples. Two farrowing herds (1.3%) and 20 farrowing-to-finishing herds (23.5%) were shown to be infected with M. hyopneumoniae. A programme to eradicate the infection from these herds was undertaken. During March 2000, a survey was made to prove the success of the screening and the eradication programmes. In total, 509 serum samples were collected randomly from slaughtered finishing pigs. Antibodies to M. hyopneumoniae were not detected in 506 of the samples, whereas 3 samples were considered suspicious or positive. Accordingly, 3 herds were shown to be infected. One of the herds was previously falsely classified as non-infected. Two of the herds were finishing herds practising continuous flow system (CF). Unlike finishing herds which practice all-in/all-out management routines on herd level, CF herds do not get rid of transmissible diseases spontaneously between batches, for which reason a screening was made in the rest of the CF herds (total n = 7). Consequently, 2 more infected herds were detected. In addition to the results of the survey, a decreasing prevalence of lung lesions at slaughter (from 5.2% to 0.1%) and lack of clinical breakdowns indicated that all member herds were finally free from M. hyopneumoniae in the end of year 2000.  相似文献

In Denmark a programme for the systematic eradication of bovine herpes virus 1 (BHV-1) was completed during the years 1984 to 1991, but outbreaks due to new introductions of BHV-1 were seen. Between January 1991 and May 1994, 22 herds became infected with BHV-1, all located closely to the German border. In 1995, 61 herds were detected BHV-1 antibody positive, but they were situated in many different parts of Denmark. In order to find the source of infection owners of infected herds were interviewed, and restriction fragment pattern analysis (RFP-analysis) was performed on virus isolates from the herds with clinical outbreaks. Isolates from clinical outbreaks up to 1995 were identified as a Cooper-like strain, while 2 of those in 1995 had characteristics of a “new” strain, which had never before been identified in Denmark or elsewhere in Europe. In the described situation different transmission routes for virus seemed possible. One being a sporadic introduction of virus due to accidental contact with infected cattle near the German border or maybe due to an airborne transmission of virus over longer distance. The other, presumably a result of import of an infected animal despite the national regulations. The latter, due to an extensive trade pattern, resulted in the introduction of infected cattle into 51 BHV-1 seronegative cattle herds.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the time period that Escherichia coli O157:H7 survives on the hides of cattle. Extensive research has been conducted and is ongoing to identify and develop novel preharvest intervention strategies to reduce the presence of E. coli O157:H7 on live cattle and subsequent transfer to processed carcasses. If a reduction of E. coli O157:H7 levels in feces can be achieved through preharvest intervention, it is not known how long it would take for such reductions to be seen on the hide. In the study presented herein, three trials were conducted to follow E. coli O157:H7 hide prevalence over time. For each trial, 36 animals were housed in individual stanchions to minimize or prevent hide contamination events. Through prevalence determination and isolate genotyping with pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, survival of E. coli O157:H7 on the hides of live cattle was determined to be short lived, with an approximate duration of 9 days or less. The results of this study suggest that any preharvest interventions that are to be administered at the end of the finishing period will achieve maximum effect in reducing E. coli O157:H7 levels on cattle hides if given 9 days before the cattle are presented for processing. However, it should be noted that interventions reducing pathogen shedding would also contribute to decreasing hide contamination through lowering the contamination load of the processing plant lairage environment, regardless of the time of application.  相似文献

Wild passerine birds (Passeriformes) from the northeastern part of the Czech Republic were examined for ectoparasites during the pre-breeding period in 2007. Two species of fleas of the genera Ceratophyllus and Dasypsyllus (Siphonaptera: Ceratophyllidae), and 23 species of chewing lice belonging to the genera Ricinus, Myrsidea, Menacanthus (Phthiraptera: Menoponidae), Brueelia, Penenirmus, and Philopterus (Phthiraptera: Philopteridae) were found on 108 birds of 16 species. Distribution of insect ectoparasites found on wild birds during pre-breeding was compared with previous data from the post-breeding period. There was no difference in total prevalence of chewing lice in pre-breeding and post-breeding periods. Higher prevalence of fleas and slightly higher mean intensity of chewing lice were found on birds during the pre-breeding period. There was a significant difference in total prevalence but equal mean intensity of chewing lice on resident and migrating birds.  相似文献

A field trial in Zimbabwe investigated the efficacy of insecticide-treated cattle as a barrier to prevent the re-invasion of tsetse, Glossina morsitans and G. pallidipes (Diptera: Glossinidae), into cleared areas. The original tsetse barrier consisted of insecticide-treated odour-baited targets, at an operational density of four to five targets per km2, supported by insecticide-treatments of cattle with either deltamethrin dip (Decatix, Coopers) at two-weekly intervals, or deltamethrin pouron (Spoton, Coopers) at monthly intervals, in a band approximately 20 km wide from the re-invasion front. Tsetse catch, and trypanosomiasis incidence in nine sentinel herds was recorded for 7-8 months, respectively, before the targets were removed, leaving only the insecticide treatment of the local cattle to stem the re-invasion of tsetse. After the removal of the target barrier, the tsetse readily invaded the trial area and the incidence of trypanosomiasis in sentinel herds increased, while their PCVs decreased. After seven months without the targets in place, trypanosomiasis prevalence in the local stock had reached alarmingly high levels; the trial was terminated prematurely and the target barrier re-deployed. Immediately after the re-deployment of the target barrier, the tsetse catch in the trial area reverted to acceptable levels along the re-invasion front, and trypanosomiasis incidence in the sentinel cattle decreased. It is concluded that, under the conditions of the field trial, the insecticidal treatment of local cattle did not in itself form an effective barrier to tsetse re-invasion. By contrast, the target barrier performed as was predicted by mathematical and experimental analysis, and readily cleared the tsetse infestation and reduced trypanosomosis incidence in the trial area.  相似文献

Bovine viral diarrhoea eradication and control programmes in Europe.   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The economic impact of BVDV infections has led a number of countries in Europe to start eradication or control programmes. While in both cases the primary step is identification and elimination of persistently infected (PI) animals, the strategy applied thereafter is dependent on the density and seroprevalence of the regional cattle population. One of the first countries to design and implement an eradication programme was Sweden in 1993, a country with a relatively low cattle density and no vaccination. For screening, an indirect antibody ELISA for serum, milk and bulk milk samples is being used. The basics of the Swedish model are no vaccination, voluntary participation, and financing of the entire scheme by the subscribing farmers. BVDV-free herds are certified and permanently checked. While in 1993 only about 35% of the herds were seronegative, about 87% were BVDV-free in 2001.The aim of control programmes in high density areas with high seroprevalence is to minimize economic losses by reducing the incidence of PI animals and thereby virus circulation (German model). Participation is voluntary, and parts of the costs are carried by the public animal insurance (Tierseuchenkasse). Screening is performed using an antigen capture ELISA with blood or serum. In Lower Saxony, for example, a herd is declared BVDV unsuspicious if all animals up to 36 months are BVDV antigen negative and the female offspring older than six months is vaccinated twice (an inactivated vaccine is used for basic immunization, and an attenuated live virus vaccine for boosting).  相似文献

Fifty-nine calves, aged 11 days to 9 months, from three farms breeding Japanese Black beef cattle in Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan, were examined for the presence of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC). A high prevalence of STEC was detected among calves, with 45 (76.3%) animals carrying STEC including different serogroups (O26, O74, O111, O114, O119, O127, O153, O157, and ONT) and toxin types. The number of STEC in the feces was estimated by a combined method involving enumeration of colony-forming units by a plate-most-probable-number (plate-MPN) technique and polymerase chain reaction for the detection of Shiga toxin genes. Fecal shedding ranged from 10(1) to 10(10) MPN/g feces. To evaluate the safety and efficacy of bicozamycin (BCM: previously named as bicyclomycin) in eradicating STEC, 30 calves carrying STEC with or without diarrhea were examined. Fifteen calves were treated orally with BCM (10 mg/kg/day) once daily for 5 days, and the other 15 were untreated. Twenty-four hours after the last dose, fecal specimens were collected from both groups to compare the number of coliforms and STEC with those before treatment. BCM-treated animals had a significantly lower number of coliforms and STEC compared to the untreated calves. The STEC eradication rate was 86.6% (13/15) in the BCM-treated group, compared to 0% (0/15) in the control group. The corresponding cure rates for diarrhea were 87.5 (7/8) and 0% (0/3), respectively. No adverse reactions were observed in the calves during treatment. It is concluded that BCM is an effective agent for the eradication of STEC in calves with or without diarrhea.  相似文献

Sera and blood from cattle and sheep were examined for the presence of Babesia and Theileria spp by microscopy and serology at the Parasitology Department of the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale of Abruzzo and Molise (IZSAM). Of the 47 bovine herds (323 animals) tested, 15 were found positive for Babesia bigemina and 1 for Babesia bovis. Two outbreaks occurred, one caused by B. bigemina and one by B. bovis. The B. bigemina outbreak occurred in Abruzzo and has been followed for two years. The isolate of B. bigemina was very pathogenic leading to the death of two cows out of 57. The vector responsible of the transmission appeared to be Rhipicephalus bursa. Parasites were observed in the erythrocytes for 30 days whereas sera were positive to indirect immunofluorescence (IFA) for at least one year. The B. bovis outbreak occurred in the province of Mantova (Northern Italy) in a group of 70 beef cattle imported from France. The infection resulted in the death of 5 animals and severe illness in another 6. In contrast with what occurred for Babesia infection, no clinical cases were recorded in cattle when species of Theileria were detected by microscopy. Of the 24 bovine herds (252 animals) tested for Theileria, 21 were found positive for the T. "sergenti"/buffeli/orientalis group. Single and mixed infection of T. "sergenti" and T. buffeli/orientalis were detected in herds of cross-bred cattle from Abruzzo and Marche. The parasites were identified by using a polymerase chain reaction which amplified DNA encoding p32/34. Most of the collected ticks (90%) were adults of R. bursa whereas the others were adults of Hyalomma detritum. During the period the animals have been observed (18 months), no clinical cases have been recorded and no associations have been found between blood abnormalities and animals found infected with Theileria. Prevalences of subclinically infected carriers increased from February till December (95.4%) even if the animals were indoors and no ticks were present. The prevalence then dropped dramatically six months later (76.7%). In calves less than 1 year old, the prevalence of infection significantly (p<0.05) increased with age, however intraerythrocytic stages of Theileria were found in the blood of three newborn calves (<7 days of age). Of the 18 ovine flocks tested for Babesia spp. (150 animals examined), 1 was positive for B. ovis and 2 for B. motasi. B. motasi infection was not associated with symptoms, while an outbreak of babesiosis caused by B. ovis occurred in Abruzzo. The infection resulted in the death of 3 animals (0.75% of the flock), two rams (20% of the total number) and a ewe, and severe illness in another 5 ewes (2% of the flock). Specimens of R. bursa and R. turanicus were collected from the infected animals. Of the 18 flocks (150 animals) examined, 12 were microscopically positive for Theileria spp. No clinical cases were recorded and identification at species level was not possible on the basis of morphological criteria. The prevalence distribution of infected herds and infected animals within herds and flocks have been calculated by a Monte Carlo simulation model, running 10,000 iterations. The most likely levels of prevalence of infected herds and infected animals within herds found for the species observed were as follows: 20% for B. bigemina with a prevalence within herd of 27%, 11% for B. bovis (18% within herd), 10% for Babesia ovis (19% within herd), 10% for B. motasi (17.5% within herd), 63% for Theileria in cattle (66% within herd) and 51% for Theileria in sheep (55% within herd).  相似文献

Phthiraptera (lice) are specialised insects adapted to parasitise many warm-blooded vertebrates, including domestic animals and humans. Often, attempts by the host to alleviate the irritation created by lice, causes derangement of the hair/fur coat. Unless treated, this derangement may cause economic losses due to hide damage and/or downgrading of wool/hair/fur. In 1981, application of aqueous insecticide solutions (dipping) for the control of sheep body lice (Bovicola ovis) was largely superseded by off-shears pyrethroid "pour-on" treatments. By 1985, several field failures with these products were found to be due to low-level (20x) insecticide resistance. In 1990, high-level (640x) resistance was diagnosed in a New South Wales population. However, despite 30+years use, organophosphate-based products are still usually effective. Until recently, cattle lice caused little concern. Treatments were applied mainly for aesthetic reasons when cattle were to be presented for sale, and also to prevent damage to fences by rubbing cattle. However, the introduction of quality-management programmes have raised awareness of the economic losses due to hide damage associated with lice infestations. Emerging industries such as emu and alpaca farming have raised the pest status of other louse species, and necessitated insecticidal intervention. In humans, attempts to control head lice, Pediculus humanus capitis, infestations have repeatedly failed around the world.  相似文献

Aims:  The aim of this study was to determine variation of prevalence throughout a year, colonization levels and genotypes of Campylobacter jejuni in Finnish dairy cattle herds.
Methods and Results:  Faecal samples and tank milk samples from three dairy cattle herds were taken five times, and swab samples from drinking troughs once during a 1-year sampling period. The samples were enriched in Bolton broth and subsequently spread on mCCDA. Isolates were then subtyped by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis using SmaI. Campylobacter jejuni was detected in 169 of the 340 faecal samples and in one drinking trough sample. Prevalences between herds and sampling times varied widely. The faecal levels of C. jejuni were mainly low. Between one and four SmaI subtypes were identified from each herd per sampling. Two SmaI subtypes persisted in two of the herds throughout the study.
Conclusions:  Dairy cattle can be a long-term reservoir of C. jejuni subtypes similar to clinical isolates. Differences in the colonization potential among C. jejuni strains as well as in the resistance to campylobacter colonization among animals are possible.
Significance and Impact of the Study:  The study provides data on contamination dynamics, colonization levels and the persistence of C. jejuni in dairy cattle.  相似文献

In a 20-year-survey, 9364 dairy cattle in 324 herds kept under a zero-grazing management, 1252 beef cattle in 46 herds grazing all the year round, 3347 sheep in 134 herds (only 26 are grazing herds), and 872 goats in 47 herds (only 20 are grazing) were examined. The mites collected from cattle were identified as Chorioptes texanus only, and those from sheep, goats and gazelles were identified as C. bovis. Chorioptic mange was not diagnozed in grazing beef cattle, ibexes and housed animals (as compared to grazing herds), and in rams and billy goats. Holstein-Israeli bulls kept in insemination centres were not clinically infested, whereas four Charolais bulls were infested with chorioptic mange. Infestation rate was higher in older animals than in younger ones. Hoggets and young goats over 10 months and heifers over 13 months were found clinically infested with Choriopic mites. Lesions were not usually extensive and occurred mainly in predilection sites. The ocular form in sheep and the groin form in goats are very uncommon and apparently are reported for the first time. Chorioptic mange was recorded generally throughout the year. In our study seasonal distribution could not be demonstrated in cattle, while in sheep and goats the highest infestation rate occurred in February to March and the lowest in August and September.  相似文献

Insect juvenile hormone mimics (IJH) at 0.1 and 0.01% were used as sprays for control of the short-nosed cattle louse, Haematopinus eurysternus Denny, on 11 heavily infested Hereford cows. A significant reduction of lice occurred although eradication was achieved in only one case. Severe reactions, apparently associated with the death or failure of complete development of cattle grub larvae, Hypoderma sp. Latr., were seen in the IJH-treated cows.  相似文献

Endometritis reduces reproductive performance in dairy cattle. Diagnosis of endometritis is undertaken using a variety of techniques including vaginoscopy, manual examination, cytology and ultrasonography. The current studies compared a novel test device ("metricheck") that is inserted into the vagina with vaginoscopy and then examined the relationship between the metricheck test score at 35 days before the start of the seasonal breeding programme and subsequent reproductive performance. Cows (n = 191; Study 1) with a history of a peripartum disease were examined by both vaginoscopy and the metricheck device and any material viewed within the vagina (using vaginoscopy) or retrieved (by the metricheck device) was scored on a 0 (no material) to 5 (grossly purulent and with an odour) scale. Within each herd the order of examination was randomized with sequentially presented pairs of cows. All cows (n = 2793; Study 2) from nine herds were examined and scored using the metricheck device 35 days before the start of the seasonal breeding programme. All cows were pregnancy tested to determine date of conception. In Study 1, more cows were defined as infected (i.e. score > 1) following metricheck than vaginoscopic examination (60% versus 43%, respectively; P < 0.05) and the level of agreement between the two tests was moderate (kappa = 0.45). The metricheck device had a higher sensitivity, but lower specificity, than vaginoscopy. Endometritis (i.e. score > 1) was detected in 21.2% of cows examined in Study 2. The prevalence of endometritis varied among herds, declined with time postpartum (P < 0.05) and was higher in cows recorded as having a peripartum disease (P < 0.01). Cows diagnosed with endometritis were at higher risk of not being detected in oestrus before the start of breeding (P < 0.01), took longer to be inseminated after the start of the seasonal breeding programme (P < 0.01), had a lower first service conception rate (P < 0.01), had lower 56-day and final pregnancy rates (P < 0.05) and took longer to conceive than cows without endometritis (P < 0.05). It is concluded that examination with the metricheck device is more sensitive in detecting endometritis than vaginoscopy. Diagnosis of endometritis with the metricheck device was associated with poorer subsequent reproductive performance.  相似文献

Major ectoparasites of cattle in and around Mekelle, northern Ethiopia   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Studies on the identification of major ectoparasites of cattle in and around Mekelle in northern Ethiopia were carried out from November 2006 to June 2007. Ectoparasite prevalence, infestation, and the possible risks associated with ectoparasites were investigated. Data collected were analyzed using the χ2‐test. A total of 849 cattle were examined: 40.2% (341), 53.2% (452) and 5.9% (50) were infested with ticks, lice and Demodex, respectively. A positive correlation was observed between prevalence and production system and breed of cattle. The results also revealed widespread occurrence of ectoparasites that have affected the general health and productivity of cattle in the study area. Seven different species of ticks were found on the cattle, with some capable of transmitting pathogens harmful to both cattle and humans.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Although cases of reflux esophagitis (RE) developing after treatment to eradicate Helicobacter pylori have been discussed in some detail, no reports are available concerning the histologic examination of RE both before and after eradication therapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-one patients and 111 specimens were investigated using endoscopic and histologic techniques. The histologic findings including basal zone height, papillar height, Ki-67 labeling index, and COX-2 expression before and after treatment for H. pylori infection were compared with those in normal controls and patients with endoscopic RE. RESULTS: Twelve months after eradication therapy, the incidence of newly developed endoscopic RE was 20% (5/25). Basal zone height and papillar height had increased at 1 month, but had returned to pretreatment levels after 12 months of eradication therapy. The Ki-67 labeling index was significantly increased 1 and 12 months after eradication therapy compared to values before treatment. COX-2 expression gradually increased after the treatment. The phenomena linked to esophagitis appeared after eradication therapy. However, the severity and extent of these signs were not so high after the treatment of H. pylori than those in patients with overt reflux esophagitis. Focusing on the patients with hiatal hernia, papillar height and Ki-67 labeling index increased significantly after eradication therapy, values being almost the same as those in the patients with endoscopic RE. CONCLUSIONS: Hiatal hernia plays an important role in the possible occurrence of hidden RE after treatment for a H. pylori infection.  相似文献
