Meristic trait variation among species and populations has long been used as the basis for identification and classification of fishes. Within Oncorhynchus mykiss, there is considerable variation in meristic characters such as numbers of vertebrae, lateral line scales, fin rays, gill rakers, and pyloric caeca. In our laboratory the Oregon State University (OSU) rainbow trout and the Clearwater River (CW) steelhead trout clonal lines, produced by androgenesis, exhibit significant differences in values for meristic traits, making quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis of these meristic characters possible. Our objective was to determine the number, location, and effects of QTL associated with meristic characters in order to test two hypotheses: (1) that QTL for different meristic traits co-localize to the same linkage group and (2) that meristic trait QTL co-localize to the same linkage group as a previously identified development rate QTL. Doubled haploid individuals, produced by androgenesis from sperm from an F1 hybrid between the OSU and CW lines, were used to evaluate the joint segregation of each meristic phenotype and Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphic marker genotypes. Composite interval mapping revealed QTL for six of the seven traits analyzed. One QTL each for scales above the lateral line and for gill rakers co-localized to the same position. Only one QTL for scales above the lateral line co-localized to the same region as that for the development rate QTL, but a greater map resolution is necessary to determine if these loci are truly the same. We failed to detect pleiotropy for most meristic trait QTL. Our results suggest that different major loci are associated with variation in each meristic character and that the expression of these loci may be influenced by maternal and external environmental factors.  相似文献

A new anthiine fish,Holanthias kingyo sp, nov., is described on the basis of two specimens (male and female) from the Ryukyu Is., Japan. The new species is most similar toH. natalensis (Fowler, 1925), known only from South Africa, in having the following characters: dorsal fin soft rays 16 or 17, anal fin soft rays 9, pored lateral line scales 46 or 47, scale rows above lateral line to origin of dorsal fin 9 1/2 or 10 1/2, and gill rakers 10 or 11 +24 or 25=34–36. It differs from the latter in having more scales below the lateral line to the origin of the anal fin (27 1/2 vs. 18–24), a U-shaped caudal fin with paddle-like lobes (vs. deeply forked caudal fin with each lobe ending in a long slender filament), the outer margin of the soft anal fin vertical (vs. gently convex) and brown spots on the body in female (vs. spots absent in females).  相似文献

Detailed examination of eelpouts in collected material from the Gerlache Strait and the Bellingshausen Sea, during the Spanish Antarctic Expeditions Bentart 03 and Bentart 06, and from the Bransfield Strait, during the Danish Galathea 3 Expedition, at depths between 1,056 and 1,837?m, revealed two undescribed species of Santelmoa Matallanas 2010. Herein, Santelmoa fusca sp. nov. and Santelmoa antarctica sp. nov. are described on the basis of twelve specimens. Santelmoa fusca can be separated from all other Santelmoa species by the following characters: mouth terminal; two posterior nasal pores; lateral line double; two irregular rows of palatine teeth; dorsal fin rays 109–113; anal fin rays 88–94; vertebrae 27–29?+?87–91?=?114–118; two pyloric caeca well developed; scales reduced to tail; pelvic fins and vomerine teeth present. Santelmoa antarctica can be separated from all other Santelmoa species by the following characters: mouth subterminal; two posterior nasal pores; suborbital pores seven (6?+?1); lateral line double; single row of palatine teeth; supraoccipital dividing the posterior end of frontals; central radials notched; dorsal fin rays 109–112; anal fin rays 89–93; vertebrae 27?+?89–92?=?116–119; two pyloric caeca well developed; scales, ventral fins and vomerine teeth present. Santelmoa fusca and S. antarctica can readily be separated from each other by squamation (reduced to tail vs. on the tail and on the posterior part of body); suborbital pore pattern (6?+?0 vs. 6?+?1), as well as several morphometric characters. The relationships of the two new species with congeners are discussed.  相似文献

Synopsis We evaluated morphological differentiation among populations of threespine stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus, from the Limia and Miño basins (Galicia, NW Spain), the river Karup (Denmark) and Aiguamolls de l’Empordà (Girona, northeast Spain), using multivariate analysis of morphometric and meristic characters. Multivariate discriminant analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis uncovered significant differences among the four main groups, between the two groups from Galicia and among populations within the Miño basin. The stickleback from Galicia differed from the Danish group in head and body armour characters. Between the Miño and Limia groups, we found differences in both head and body proportions as well as in number of gill rakers. Within the Miño basin populations varied with respect to head and body armour traits and the number of lower gill rakers. Clustering analysis divided these populations into two groups based on the latter trait: fish from the upper section of river Miño and tributaries (a lower number of lower gill rakers) and fish from the central and lower reaches of the river. Overall, morphometric traits were more useful than meristic ones; however, the two types of data provided congruent information about the morphological differentiation of stickleback populations.  相似文献

A new species of the bitterling genus Acheilognathus, Acheilognathus changtingensis sp. nov., was recently discovered from Changting County in Hanjiang River, Fujian Province, Southeastern China. It can be diagnosed by the following combination of characters: dorsal fin with three simple and 15 (occasionally 14) branched fin rays, anal fin with three simple and 12 (occasionally 11) branched fin rays; dorsal fin pale and anal fin slightly pale; white spots on anal-fin rays forming a transverse band, and anal fin margined with white band in males. Its unique characters are the many dispersed black spots on the dorsal, anal, pelvic, caudal fins, and on the head. Using the mitochondrial cytochrome Jb gene as a molecular marker, we reconstructed phylogenetic trees of A. changtingensis sp. nov. and other species in Acheilognathus to confirm its taxonomic status and study its speciation. Analyses of both morphological and molecular data consistently indicated the taxonomic status of the present new species. The results also show that A. changtingensis sp. nov. and Acheilognathus macropterus are sister species that diverged about 14.50 MYA by geographical isolation.  相似文献

Examination of morphometric characters of Solea aegyptiaca shows that it cannot be separated from Solea solea . Diagnostic characters are given to separate this species from S. senegalensis . The available data show that Solea impar and S. nasuta are junior synonyms of S. lascaris . Meristic characters of S. solea and S. lascaris vary greatly according to the geographical origin of the examined fishes, indicating the influence of temperature on the number of vertebrae and fin rays. A key is provided for the identification of the four species of the genus Solea known in the Atlanto-Mediterranean region.  相似文献
