Detailed 3-Dimensional (3D) wing kinematics was experimentally presented in free flight of a beetle,Trypoxylus dichotomus,which has a pair of elytra (forewings) and flexible hind wings.The kinematic parameters such as the wing tip trajectory,angle of attack and camber deformation were obtained from a 3D reconstruction technique that involves the use of two synchronized high-speed cameras to digitize various points marked on the wings.Our data showed outstanding characteristics of deformation and flexibility of the beetle's hind wing compared with other measured insects,especially in the chordwise and spanwise directions during flapping motion.The hind wing produced 16% maximum positive camber deformation during the downstroke.It also experienced twisted shape showing large variation of the angle of attack from the root to the tip during the upstroke.  相似文献

Aerodynamic characteristics of the beetle,Trypoxylus dichotomus,which has a pair of elytra (forewings) and flexible hind wings,are investigated.Visualization experiments were conducted for various flight conditions of a beetle,Trypoxylus dichotomus:free,tethered,hovering,forward and climbing flights.Leading edge,trailing edge and tip vortices on both wings were observed clearly.The leading edge vortex was stable and remained on the top surface of the elytron for a wide interval during the downstroke of free forward flight.Hence,the elytron may have a considerable role in lift force generation of the beetle.In addition,we reveal a suction phenomenon between the gaps of the hind wing and the elytron in upstroke that may improve the positive lift force on the hind wing.We also found the reverse clap-fling mechanism of the T.dichotomus beetle in hovering flight.The hind wings touch together at the beginning of the upstroke.The vortex generation,shedding and interaction give a better understanding of the detailed aerodynamic mechanism of beetle flight.  相似文献

The function of the flapping elytra was investigated in garden shafers (Melolontha melolontha L.) and rhinoceros beetles (Oryctes boas Fabr.).
1.  The movements of alae and elytra are determined. Both move with the same frequency and in the same phase, but the range of the elytral stroke never reaches below the frontal plane. In downstroke the elytra are at an angle positive to the airstream (horizontal flight).
2.  After exact investigation of the construction of the elytra (depth, width, length, surface, torsion and velocity of each point of the elytra) the most effective point in the production of lift during the downstroke was determined.
3.  After loss of one third of the surface of the elytra the beetles cannot fly horizontally. In tethered flight the wing stroke frequency of the alae does not increase when the elytra are shortened. Shortening of the elytra does not interfere with the resonance system of the pterothorax.
4.  The lift of the elytra results from active and passive components (more than 17% of the body weight). In the airstream (front 2.00 m/s, average body weight 944 mp) the passive lift is 14.3% for elytra in the down position; 3.1% of the lift is caused by the active downstroke.
5.  The elytra of these beetles are indispensible for horizontal flight. Primarily they produce lift passively with added help from the downstroke, and have no function for the drag. The effect of upstroke is discussed.

In recent decades, the take-off mechanisms of flying animals have received much attention in insect flight initiation. Most of previous works have focused on the jumping mechanism, which is the most common take-off mechanism found in flying animals. Here, we presented that the rhinoceros beetle, Trypoxylus dichotomus, takes offwithout jumping. In this study, we used 3-Dimensional (3D) high-speed video techniques to quantitatively analyze the wings and body kinematics during the initiation periods of flight. The details of the flapping angle, angle of attack of the wings and the roll, pitch and yaw angles of the body were investigated to understand the mechanism of take-off in T. dichotomus. The beetle took off gradually with a small velocity and small acceleration. The body kinematic analyses showed that the beetle exhibited stable take-off. To generate high lift force, the beetle modulated its hind wing to control the angle of attack; the angle of attack was large during the upstroke and small during the downstroke. The legs of beetle did not contract and strongly release like other insects. The hind wing could be con- sidered as a main source of lift for heavy beetle.  相似文献

We explore the implementation of wing feather separation and lead-lagging motion to a flapping wing. A biomimetic flapping wing system with separated outer wings is designed and demonstrated. The artificial wing feather separation is implemented in the biomimetic wing by dividing the wing into inner and outer wings. The features of flapping, lead-lagging, and outer wing separation of the flapping wing system are captured by a high-speed camera for evaluation. The performance of the flapping wing system with separated outer wings is compared to that of a flapping wing system with closed outer wings in terms of forward force and downward force production. For a low flapping frequency ranging from 2.47 to 3.90 Hz, the proposed biomimetic flapping wing system shows a higher thrust and lift generation capability as demonstrated by a series of experiments. For 1.6 V application (lower frequency operation), the flapping wing system with separated wings could generate about 56% higher forward force and about 61% less downward force compared to that with closed wings, which is enough to demonstrate larger thrust and lift production capability of the separated outer wings. The experiments show that the outer parts of the separated wings are able to deform, resulting in a smaller amount of drag production during the upstroke, while still producing relatively greater lift and thrust during the downstroke.  相似文献

Stability is essential to flying and is usually assumed to be especially problematic in flapping flight. If so, problems of stability may have presented a particular hurdle to the evolution of flapping flight. In spite of this, the stability of flapping flight has never been properly analysed. Here we use quasi-static and blade element approaches to analyse the stability provided by a flapping wing. By using reduced order approximations to the natural modes of motion, we show that wing beat frequencies are generally high enough compared to the natural frequencies of motion for a quasi-static approach to be valid as a first approximation. Contrary to expectations, we find that there is noting inherently destabilizing about flapping: beating the wings faster simply amplifies any existing stability or instability, and flapping can even enhance stability compared to gliding at the same air speed. This suggests that aerodynamic stability may not have been a particular hurdle in the evolution of flapping flight. Hovering animals, like hovering helicopters, are predicted to possess neutral static stability. Flapping animals, like fixed wing aircraft, are predicted to be stable in forward flight if the mean flight force acts above and/or behind the centre of gravity. In this case, the downstroke will always be stabilizing. The stabilizing contribution may be diminished by an active upstroke with a low advance ratio and more horizontal stroke plane; other forms of the upstroke may make a small positive contribution to stability. An active upstroke could, therefore, be used to lower stability and enhance manoeuvrability. Translatory mechanisms of unsteady lift production are predicted to amplify the stability predicted by a quasi-static analysis. Non-translatory mechanisms will make little or no contribution to stability. This may be one reason why flies, and other animals which rely upon non-translatory aerodynamic mechanisms, often appear inherently unstable.  相似文献

Aerodynamic characteristic of the beetle, Trypoxylus dichotomus, which has a pair of elytra (forewings) and hind wings, is numerically investigated. Based on the experimental results of wing kinematics, two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) computational fluid dynamic simulations were carried out to reveal aerodynamic performance of the hind wing. The roles of the spiral Leading Edge Vortex (LEV) and the spanwise flow were clarified by comparing 2D and 3D simulations. Mainly due to pitching down of chord line during downstroke in highly inclined stroke plane, relatively high averaged thrust was produced in the free forward flight of the beetle. The effects of the local corrugation and the camber variation were also investigated for the beetle's hind wings. Our results show that the camber variation plays a significant role in improving both lift and thrust in the flapping. On the other hand, the local corrugation pattern has no significant effect on the aerodynamic force due to large angle of attack during flapping.  相似文献

Most hovering animals, such as insects and hummingbirds, enhance lift by producing leading edge vortices (LEVs) and by using both the downstroke and upstroke for lift production. By contrast, most hovering passerine birds primarily use the downstroke to generate lift. To compensate for the nearly inactive upstroke, weight support during the downstroke needs to be relatively higher in passerines when compared with, e.g. hummingbirds. Here we show, by capturing the airflow around the wing of a freely flying pied flycatcher, that passerines may use LEVs during the downstroke to increase lift. The LEV contributes up to 49 per cent to weight support, which is three times higher than in hummingbirds, suggesting that avian hoverers compensate for the nearly inactive upstroke by generating stronger LEVs. Contrary to other animals, the LEV strength in the flycatcher is lowest near the wing tip, instead of highest. This is correlated with a spanwise reduction of the wing's angle-of-attack, partly owing to upward bending of primary feathers. We suggest that this helps to delay bursting and shedding of the particularly strong LEV in passerines.  相似文献

We study the role of unsteady lift in the context of flapping wing bird flight. Both aerodynamicists and biologists have attempted to address this subject, yet it seems that the contribution of unsteady lift still holds many open questions. The current study deals with the estimation of unsteady aerodynamic forces on a freely flying bird through analysis of wingbeat kinematics and near wake flow measurements using time resolved particle image velocimetry. The aerodynamic forces are obtained through two approaches, the unsteady thin airfoil theory and using the momentum equation for viscous flows. The unsteady lift is comprised of circulatory and non-circulatory components. Both approaches are presented over the duration of wingbeat cycles. Using long-time sampling data, several wingbeat cycles have been analyzed in order to cover both the downstroke and upstroke phases. It appears that the unsteady lift varies over the wingbeat cycle emphasizing its contribution to the total lift and its role in power estimations. It is suggested that the circulatory lift component cannot assumed to be negligible and should be considered when estimating lift or power of birds in flapping motion.  相似文献

Control of movement in the avian shoulder joint is fundamental to understanding the avian wingstroke. The acrocoracohumeral ligament (AHL) is thought to play a key role in stabilizing the glenoid and balancing the pectoralis in gliding flight. If the AHL has to be taut to balance the pectoralis, then it must constrain glenohumeral motion during flapping flight as well. However, birds vary wing kinematics depending on flight speed and behavior. How can a passive ligament accommodate such varying joint movements? Herein, mechanical testing and 3-D modeling are used to link the mechanical properties and morphology of the AHL to its functional role during flapping flight. The bone-ligament-bone complex of the pigeon (Columba livia) fails at a tensile loading of 141 ± 18 N (± s .D., n = 10) or 39 times body weight, which corresponds to a failure stress of 51 MPa, well above expected loads during flight. Simulated AHL length changes, comparisons to glenohumeral kinematics from the literature, and manipulations of partially dissected pigeon specimens all support the hypothesis that the AHL remains taut through downstroke and most of upstroke while becoming slack during the downstroke/upstroke transition. The digital AHL model provides a mechanism for explaining how the AHL can stabilize the shoulder joint under a broad array of humeral paths by constraining the coordination of glenohumeral degrees of freedom.  相似文献

Two styles of bird locomotion, hovering and intermittent flight, have great potential to inform future development of autonomous flying vehicles. Hummingbirds are the smallest flying vertebrates, and they are the only birds that can sustain hovering. Their ability to hover is due to their small size, high wingbeat frequency, relatively large margin of mass-specific power available for flight and a suite of anatomical features that include proportionally massive major flight muscles (pectoralis and supracoracoideus) and wing anatomy that enables them to leave their wings extended yet turned over (supinated) during upstroke so that they can generate lift to support their weight. Hummingbirds generate three times more lift during downstroke compared with upstroke, with the disparity due to wing twist during upstroke. Much like insects, hummingbirds exploit unsteady mechanisms during hovering including delayed stall during wing translation that is manifest as a leading-edge vortex (LEV) on the wing and rotational circulation at the end of each half stroke. Intermittent flight is common in small- and medium-sized birds and consists of pauses during which the wings are flexed (bound) or extended (glide). Flap-bounding appears to be an energy-saving style when flying relatively fast, with the production of lift by the body and tail critical to this saving. Flap-gliding is thought to be less costly than continuous flapping during flight at most speeds. Some species are known to shift from flap-gliding at slow speeds to flap-bounding at fast speeds, but there is an upper size limit for the ability to bound (~0.3 kg) and small birds with rounded wings do not use intermittent glides.  相似文献

Flying vertebrates change the shapes of their wings during the upstroke, thereby decreasing wing surface area and bringing the wings closer to the body than during downstroke. These, and other wing deformations, might reduce the inertial cost of the upstroke compared with what it would be if the wings remained fully extended. However, wing deformations themselves entail energetic costs that could exceed any inertial energy savings. Using a model that incorporates detailed three-dimensional wing kinematics, we estimated the inertial cost of flapping flight for six bat species spanning a 40-fold range of body masses. We estimate that folding and unfolding comprises roughly 44 per cent of the inertial cost, but that the total inertial cost is only approximately 65 per cent of what it would be if the wing remained extended and rigid throughout the wingbeat cycle. Folding and unfolding occurred mostly during the upstroke; hence, our model suggests inertial cost of the upstroke is not less than that of downstroke. The cost of accelerating the metacarpals and phalanges accounted for around 44 per cent of inertial costs, although those elements constitute only 12 per cent of wing weight. This highlights the energetic benefit afforded to bats by the decreased mineralization of the distal wing bones.  相似文献

The aerodynamic role of the elytra during a beetle's flapping motion is not well-elucidated, although it is well-recognized that the evolution of elytra has been a key in the success of coleopteran insects due to their protective function. An experimental study on wing kinematics reveals that for almost concurrent flapping with the hind wings, the flapping angle of the elytra is 5 times smaller than that of the hind wings. Then, we explore the aerodynamic forces on elytra in free forward flight with and without an effect of elytron-hind wing interaction by three-dimensional numerical simulation. The numerical results show that vertical force generated by the elytra without interaction is not sufficient to support even its own weight. However, the elytron-hind wing interaction improves the vertical force on the elytra up to 80%; thus, the total vertical force could fully support its own weight. The interaction slightly increases the vertical force on the hind wind by 6% as well.  相似文献

Free-flight body dynamics and wing kinematics were collected from recordings of continuous, low-speed, multi-wingbeat yaw turns in hawkmoths (Manduca sexta) using stereo videography. These data were used to examine the effects of rotational damping arising from interactions between the body rotation and flapping motion (flapping counter-torque, FCT) on continuous turning. The moths were found to accelerate during downstroke, then decelerate during upstroke by an amount consistent with FCT damping. Wing kinematics related to turning were then analysed in a simulation of hawkmoth flight; results were consistent with the observed acceleration–deceleration pattern. However, an alternative wing kinematic which produced more continuous and less damped accelerations was found in the simulation. These findings demonstrate that (i) FCT damping is detectable in the dynamics of continuously turning animals and (ii) FCT-reducing kinematics do exist but were not employed by turning moths, possibly because within-wingbeat damping simplifies control of turning by allowing control systems to target angular velocity rather than acceleration.  相似文献

In bats, the wing membrane is anchored not only to the body and forelimb, but also to the hindlimb. This attachment configuration gives bats the potential to modulate wing shape by moving the hindlimb, such as by joint movement at the hip or knee. Such movements could modulate lift, drag, or the pitching moment. In this study we address: 1) how the ankle translates through space during the wingbeat cycle; 2) whether amplitude of ankle motion is dependent upon flight speed; 3) how tension in the wing membrane pulls the ankle; and 4) whether wing membrane tension is responsible for driving ankle motion. We flew five individuals of the lesser dog-faced fruit bat, Cynopterus brachyotis (Family: Pteropodidae), in a wind tunnel and documented kinematics of the forelimb, hip, ankle, and trailing edge of the wing membrane. Based on kinematic analysis of hindlimb and forelimb movements, we found that: 1) during downstroke, the ankle moved ventrally and during upstroke the ankle moved dorsally; 2) there was considerable variation in amplitude of ankle motion, but amplitude did not correlate significantly with flight speed; 3) during downstroke, tension generated by the wing membrane acted to pull the ankle dorsally, and during upstroke, the wing membrane pulled laterally when taut and dorsally when relatively slack; and 4) wing membrane tension generally opposed dorsoventral ankle motion. We conclude that during forward flight in C. brachyotis, wing membrane tension does not power hindlimb motion; instead, we propose that hindlimb movements arise from muscle activity and/or inertial effects.  相似文献

Our understanding of the aerodynamics of flapping animal flightis largely based on the quasi-steady assumption: the instantaneousaerodynamic forces on a flapping wing are assumed to be identicalwith those which the wing would experience in steady motionat the same instantaneous speed and angle of attack. Researchup to a decade ago showed that the assumption was sufficientto explain the flight of the vast majority of animals, but didnot rule out the possibility that alternative aerodynamic mechanismswere employed instead. Results are presented here for four hoveringanimals for which the quasi-steady explanation fails. Theseanimals apparently use lift mechanisms that rely on vorticesshed during the rotational motion of the wing at either endof the wingbeat. The postulated rotational lift mechanisms shouldalso apply to other hovering animals, even though the quasi-steadyassumption could explain their flight. Measurements of the wingforces produced by locusts cast doubt on the validity of thequasi-steady assumption for fast forward flight as well.  相似文献

Two wing-beat gaits, distinguished by the presence or absence of lift production during the upstroke, are currently used to describe avian flight. Vortex-visualization studies indicate that lift is produced only during the downstroke in the vortex-ring gait and that lift is produced continuously in the continuous-vortex gait. Tip-reversal and feathered upstrokes represent different forms of vortex-ring gait distinguished by wing kinematics. Useful aerodynamic forces may be produced during tip-reversal upstroke in slow flight and during a feathered upstroke in fast flight, but it is probable that downstroke forces are much greater in magnitude. Uncertainty about the function of these types of upstroke may be resolved when more data are available on wake structure in different flight speeds and modes. Inferring from wing kinematics and available data on wake structure, birds with long wings or wings of high aspect ratio use a vortex-ring gait with tip-reversal upstroke at slow speeds, a vortex-ring gait with a feathered upstroke at intermediate speeds, and a continuous-vortex gait at fast speeds. Birds with short wings or wings of low aspect ratio use a vortex-ring gait with a feathered upstroke at all speeds. Regardless of wing shape, species tend to use a vortex-ring gait for acceleration and a continuous-vortex gait for deceleration. Some correlations may exist between gait selection and the function of the muscular and respiratory system. However, overall variation in wing kinematics, muscle activity, and respiratory activity is continuous rather than categorical. To further our understanding of gait selection in flying birds, it is important to test whether upstroke function varies in a similar manner. Transitions between lifting and nonlifting upstrokes may be more subtle and gradual than implied by a binomial scheme of classification.  相似文献

The aerodynamic characteristics of the Coleopteran beetle species Epilachna quadricollis, a species with flexible hind wings and stiff elytra (fore wings), are investigated in terms of hovering flight. The flapping wing kinematics of the Coleopteran insect are modeled through experimental observations with a digital high-speed camera and curve fitting from an ideal harmonic kinematics model. This model numerically simulates flight by estimating a cross section of the wing as a two-dimensional elliptical plane. There is currently no detailed study on the role of the elytron or how the elytron-hind wing interaction affects aerodynamic performance. In the case of hovering flight, the relatively small vertical or horizontal forces generated by the elytron suggest that the elytron makes no significant contribution to aerodynamic force.  相似文献

Summary The mode is demonstrated in which the three regions of the forewings of large grasshoppers, i.e. the costal, radial and anal parts (Fig. 2) are folded against each other during up- and downstroke (Fig. 1; measurements made by W. Zarnack). The aerodynamic effects of this wing folding are determined from the measurements of lift carried out on wing models in parallel air stream (Fig. 3) and on rotating wing models (Fig. 4). Accordingly wing bending during downstroke generates distinctly higher lift at small and medium angles of attack than a flat wing having the same dimensions and moving at the same speed. It generates less lift at high angles of attack. Wing bending during upstroke generates higher lift only at>15°. Lift remains greater than that of a flat wing up to the highest angles of attack. These conclusions are supported by measurements of downstroke wind velocity (Fig. 5). Therefore it is possible to change the lift of right and left wings in order to generate moments for flight control around all three axes of the animal's system of co-ordinates without changing the rough kinematics of the beating wings.

Unlike birds, insects lack control surfaces at the tail and hence most insects modify their wing kinematics to produce control forces or moments while flapping their wings. Change of the flapping angle range is one of the ways to modify wing kinematics, resulting in relocation of the mean Aerodynamic force Center (mean AC) and finally creating control moments. In an attempt to mimic this feature, we developed a flapping-wing system that generates a desired pitching moment during flap- ping-wing motion. The system comprises a flapping mechanism that creates a large and symmetric flapping motion in a pair of wings, a flapping angle change mechanism that modifies the flapping angle range, artificial wings, and a power source. From the measured wing kinematics, we have found that the flapping-wing system can properly modify the flapping angle ranges. The measured pitching moments show that the flapping-wing system generates a pitching moment in a desired direction by shifting the flapping angle range. We also demonstrated that the system can in practice change the longitudinal attitude by generating a nonzero pitching moment.  相似文献
