SUMMARY 1. Silver carp, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix (Val.), feeds on both phyto- and zooplankton and has been used in lake biomanipulation studies to suppress algal biomass. Because reports on the effects of silver carp on lake food webs have been contradictory, we conducted an enclosure experiment to test how a moderate biomass of the fish (10 g wet weight m−3) affects phytoplankton and crustacean zooplankton in a mesotrophic temperate reservoir.
2. Phytoplankton biomass <30 μm and particulate organic carbon (POC) <30 μm were significantly higher in enclosures with silver carp than in enclosures without fish, whereas Secchi depth was lower. Total copepod biomass declined strongly in both treatments during the experiment, but it was significantly higher in fish-free enclosures. Daphnid biomass was also consistently higher in enclosures without fish, although this effect was not significant. However, the presence of fish led to a fast and significant decrease in the size at maturity of Daphnia galeata Sars. Thus, the moderate biomass of silver carp had a stronger negative effect on cladoceran zooplankton than on phytoplankton.
3. Based on these results and those of previous studies, we conclude that silver carp should be used for biomanipulation only if the primary aim is to reduce nuisance blooms of large phytoplankton species (e.g. cyanobacteria) that cannot be effectively controlled by large herbivorous zooplankton. Therefore, stocking of silver carp appears to be most appropriate in tropical lakes that are highly productive and naturally lack large cladoceran zooplankton.  相似文献

1. The biomass and production of picophytoplankton, large phytoplankton and heterotrophic bacterioplankton were measured in humic Lake Örträsket, northern Sweden during four consecutive summers.
2. High flow episodes, carrying fresh dissolved organic carbon (DOC) into the lake, always stimulated heterotrophic bacterial production at the expense of primary production. Primary production never exceeded bacterial production for approximately 20 days after such an episode had replenished epilimnial DOC. We suggest that allochthonous DOC is an energy source that stimulates bacterioplankton that, because of their efficient uptake of inorganic nutrients, are then able to outcompete phytoplankton. After the exhaustion of readily available DOC, phytoplankton were able to dominate epilimnion production in Lake Örträsket.
3. Biomass production was higher when dominated by phytoplankton than by bacterioplankton, despite a similar utilization of nutrients in the epilimnion throughout the summer. We propose that different C : N : P ratios of bacterioplankton and phytoplankton permit the latter to produce more carbon (C) biomass per unit of available inorganic nutrients than bacterioplankton.  相似文献

There is increasing evidence that nitrogen limitation is of widespread occurrence in tropical lakes. Nonetheless, data on the deep tropical Lake Alchichica (Mexico) show that dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) to soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) ratio fluctuates widely. To elucidate further the role of nitrogen and phosphorus limitation on the phytoplankton growth in tropical saline lakes, we present the results of a series of nutrient enrichment experiments with natural assemblages of Lake Alchichica phytoplankton conducted monthly for a year. Our assays indicate that phosphorus and nitrogen alternate in limiting Lake Alchichica phytoplankton biomass. Phosphorous limited phytoplankton growth most (41.7%) of the time, followed by nitrogen (33.3% of the time), and both nutrients for the rest of the time (25.0%). This alternation in nitrogen and phosphorus responsible for phytoplankton growth limitation in Lake Alchichica is attributed to the combination of natural conditions (e.g., young volcanic terrain rich in phosphorus) that would favor nitrogen limitation and anthropogenic impacts (e.g., agricultural nitrogen fertilization) which would cause phosphorus limitation. SUMMARY. 1. Potential phosphatase activity and phytoplankton from several lakes of different character were compared in order to evaluate the importance of lake water pH and phytoplankton composition for the activity and pH optimum of lake water phosphatases.
2. In oligotrophic lakes, in which phytoplankton biomass was most often dominated by Ochromonadaceae spp., optimum phosphate activity was found at pH values <6. In eutrophic lakes, where species of Cyanophyceae and Bacillariophyceae dominated the phytoplankton biomass, optimum phosphatase activity was found at pH 7.5 or 8.5.
3. The pH optimum of phosphatase activity often differed from the corresponding lake water pH.
4. Experimental variation in phosphorus availability resulted in predictable changes in phosphatase activity. However, specific phosphatase activity, calculated per biomass of phytoplankton, was dependent on plankton species composition.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. We studied the effect of the small crustacean zooplankton on heterotrophic micro-organisms and edible phytoplankton in a eutrophic lake during a cyanobacterial bloom.
2. Small (15 L) enclosures were filled with natural or screened (100 μm) lake water and incubated for 5 days in the lake. Screening removed crustacean zooplankton but the initial density of rotifers and phytoplankton remained the same in control and removal treatments. Changes in the abundance and biomass of bacteria, autotrophic picoplankton (APP), heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF) and ciliates were measured daily.
3. The crustacean zooplankton, dominated by the small cladoceran Chydorus sphaericus , did not affect cyanobacteria, the main phytoplankton group during the experiment.
4. The removal of the crustacean zooplankton induced a higher abundance of ciliates and reduced that of the HNF, indicating the importance of ciliates in controlling HNF in this system.  相似文献

The seasonal distributions of phytoplankton biovolume and chlorophylla content were monitored for 14 months in a deep oligotrophic, high mountain lake (Redó, Pyrenees). An allometric relationshipof chlorophyll with biovolume was found throughout the periodstudied, with a correlation coefficient of 0.66. However, therelationship changed with season and the taxonomic compositionof the phytoplankton. Both parameters showed a similar seasonalpattern, but differences in space and time were observed. Thechlorophyll maximum was recorded deeper and later than thatof phytoplankton biovolume. While the biovolume maximum wasrelated to an improvement in conditions for growth (nutrientinput during column mixing periods), and reflected an increasein biomass, the chlorophyll maximum was related to changes incell pigment content, and to spatial or successional trendsin species dominance. Flagellated chrysophytes predominatedat the chlorophyll maxima. Chlorophyll content per unit of phytoplanktonbiovolume fluctuated greatly throughout the year, dependingon light intensity, temperature and phytoplankton composition.Of the main groups of phytoplankton in the lake, the dinoflagellates, which dominated the summer epilimnion phytoplankton community, recorded the lowest pigment content per biovolume (which isconsistent with their size). Higher chlorophyll contents perbiovolume were found in the deep hypolimnion and during thewinter cover period associated with small cells such as somespecies of chlorococcales chlorophytes. When flagellated chrysophyteswere predominant, a broad range of chlorophyll values per biovolumewas found and there was no significant correlation between thetwo biomass indices. These findings reaffirm the need to treatphytoplankton biomass estimates with caution, in particularwhen conducting primary production studies. While our resultsshow that changes in chlorophyll content per cell occur as aphotoacclimation response along a vertical profile, they alsopoint out a component of the successional trends which appearin a phytoplankton growth phase in a lake.  相似文献

1. A phytoplankton community model [Phytoplankton RespOnses To Environmental CHange (PROTECH)] was used to examine the effect of a wide range of varied light intensities and mixed depths upon simulated phytoplankton populations. Two different column lengths of the simulated water body were examined (the upper 5 m and the whole 14.5 m water column) for each scenario.
2. The hypotheses tested were that: (i) under low light intensity and/or deep mixing the simulated community will be dominated by a phytoplankter with a low critical light intensity; (ii) at high light intensity and shallow mixing the simulated community will be dominated by small, fast-growing phytoplankters; (iii) under all conditions, except deep mixing, the largest proportion of phytoplankton biomass will be found near the surface.
3. It was found under most conditions that, although there was a bloom in the upper column (dominated by algae such as Chlorella , Ceratium or Rhodomonas ), the largest phytoplankton biomass in the water column was located 9 m below the surface and consisted of solely Asterionella . This bloom was missed by the 5-m samples. Thus, using the whole column sample lengths, hypothesis (i) was not rejected but hypotheses (ii) and (iii) were refuted.
4. The inclusion of specific movement characteristics of phytoplankton in the model allowed the possibility of the dominance of multiple spaces within the water column and should be included in any model-based investigation of this topic. Further, the results from the model suggest that a reduced depth of mixing creates greater environmental heterogeneity, allowing more species to persist.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. Biomass and production of picophytoplankton, phytoplankton and heterotrophic bacterioplankton were measured in seven lakes, exhibiting a broad range in water colour because of humic substances. The aim of the study was to identify environmental variables explaining the absolute and relative importance of picophytoplankton. In addition, two dystrophic lakes were fertilised with inorganic phosphorus and nitrogen, to test eventual nutrient limitation of picophytoplankton in these systems.
2. Picophytoplankton biomass and production were highest in lakes with low concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and DOC proved the factor explaining most variation in picophytoplankton biomass and production. The relationship between picophytoplankton and lake trophy was negative, most likely because much P was bound in humic complexes. Picophytoplankton biomass decreased after the additions of P and N.
3. Compared with heterotrophic bacterioplankton, picophytoplankton were most successful at the clearwater end of the lake water colour gradient. Phytoplankton dominated over heterotrophic bacteria in the clearwater systems possibly because heterotrophic bacteria in such lakes are dependent on organic carbon produced by phytoplankton.
4. Compared with other phytoplankton, picophytoplankton did best at intermediate DOC concentrations; flagellates dominated in the humic lakes and large autotrophic phytoplankton in the clearwater lakes.
5. Picophytoplankton were not better competitors than large phytoplankton in situations when heterotrophic bacteria had access to a non-algal carbon source. Neither did their small size lead to picophytoplankton dominance over large phytoplankton in the clearwater lakes. Possible reasons include the ability of larger phytoplankton to float or swim to reduce sedimentation losses and to acquire nutrients by phagotrophy.  相似文献

1. Lake 302S in the Experimental Lakes Area of Canada was acidified from pH 6.7 (1981) to 5.1 (1986). The pH was further reduced to 4.5 in 1987 and held at that level until 1991. From 1992 to 1995, the pH was allowed to increase to a target value of 5.8.
2. The response of the phytoplankton community to decreasing pH from 6.0 to 5.1 was similar to that observed in another experimentally acidified lake (223) and in other atmospherically acidified lakes. Acidification affected species diversity of both the phytoplankton and epilithon. Phytoplankton diversity was positively correlated with pH. Epilithic algal diversity was more variable and did not correlate with pH.
3. Phytoplankton biomass was enhanced by acidification as the assemblage shifted from a dominance of chrysophytes to large dinoflagellates ( Gymnodinium sp. and Peridinium inconspicuum ). Epilithon biomass was unaffected, but dominance shifted from filamentous cyanophytes ( Lyngbya ) to acidophilic diatoms ( Tabellaria quadriseptata and Anomoeonis brachysira ).
4. The only taxon to be similarly affected in both the phytoplankton and epilithon was the cyanobacteria, being significantly reduced below pH 5.1. During early recovery (pH 5.5–5.8), cyanobacteria increased and species present prior to acidification recolonized both habitats.
5. In the early stages of recovery, planktonic and benthic assemblages remained more similar to acidified than natural assemblages, but more profound change began at pH > 5.5.  相似文献

Ogelube is a tropical oligotrophic lake having a desmid dominated phytoplankton with maximum density during the warmest season. During the rainy season, the lake cools, phytoplankton declines and dominance shifts to algae other than desmids. The lake cools further as harmattan advances, while phytoplankton reaches its minimum, suggesting water temperature to be more important than other environmental conditions. Decrease in phytoplankton density with falling water temperature was probably due to slower reproduction, rather than to increased death rate.  相似文献

The species composition, biomass (measured as algal volumes) and chlorophyll concentration of epipelic algae was studies before (1977) and during (1978–1979) fertilization with phosphorus and nitrogen of Lake Gunillajaure, a small subarctic lake in northern Sweden.
The epipelic biomass, dominated by Cyanophyceae and Bacillariophyceae, was high (5.6–20.1 cm3 m−2) at all depths in the lake with the highest values in the hypolimnion (8–13.7 m). Calculated over mean depth it was 20 times higher than that of the phytoplankton. There was no significant increase in biomass during fertilization and neither did the species composition change. The chlorophyll concentration on the other hand were significantly higher in late 1978 and in 1979 which was probably an effect of the declining light climate caused by a large phytoplankton development in the lake. Constant seasonal biomass and species composition indicate a perennial epipelic community in this lake.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. A biomanipulation experiment was carried out in a small (10 ha), but relatively deep (17 m) and highly eutrophic lake in northern Poland. The lake had been stocked in 1996, 1997 and 1998 with a variety of piscivorous fish (pike, catfish, trout and pikeperch), in order to reduce numbers of cyprinid planktivores.
2. Piscivore stocking was associated with a threefold decrease in the offshore fish density (night echosounding). Despite this reduction, the large planktonic cladoceran, Daphnia hyalina , remained scarce, whereas the density of small-sized zooplankton increased greatly.
3. The lack of demographic response in D. hyalina was probably due to the anoxia in the hypolimnetic refuge of this vertically migrating species. The anoxic hypolimnion, below 3–4 m depth, was inhabited day and night by numerous Chaoborus flavicans larvae.
4. Changes in zooplankton were associated with shifts in the taxonomic composition (from single-cell green algae to filamentous cyanobacteria), size structure (from nano- to net phytoplankton) and seasonal dynamics of phytoplankton, but not in the average biomass of planktonic algae. A clear-water phase, which was absent in the prestocking years, developed in spring, with Secchi depth reaching 2.5 m, a value which had never been recorded in the 20 years preceding the biomanipulation. In general, the lake's status was switched from hypertrophic to eutrophic.
5. Deteriorating food conditions, resulting from qualitative changes in the phytoplankton community, combined with predation pressure by the remaining fish and Chaoborus larvae were associated with the ultimate elimination of D. hyalina from the lake.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. We investigate the importance of a refuge from fish predation to the abundance, species composition and seasonal succession of zooplankton. Thirty lakes representing a range of depths were sampled twice in summer for physical/chemical parameters and zooplankton community structure.
2. We define the refuge from centrarchid predators to be that space between the thermocline and the zone of anoxia. As lakes vary in rate of oxygen depletion from the hypolimnion. the refuge size and lake depth are independent: refuge size decreases during the summer period.
3. Lake depth and refuge size independently explain variation among lakes in zooplankton species composition, but seasonal community change within lakes is best predicted by loss of refuge size.
4. Refuge size also explains the substantial variation in the relative dominance of the two major daphnid species. Lakes possessing a large refuge are dominated by D. pulicaria ; those with a small refuge are dominated by the smaller, D. galeata mendotae . We suggest that lakes of intermediate refuge size, which are characterized by high species diversity, represent a more equitable balance of predation and competition.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. Based on data for 14C-primary production and biomass changes in a small and shallow lake (Créteil Lake, France), overall phytoplankton losses were calculated through an annual cycle (November 1985-October 1986). The summer period in 1986 is compared with two other summer periods in 1985 and 1980, these two years corresponding to extreme levels of algal biomass.
2. Independent from the trophic state of the lake, phytoplankton populations were dominated by small-sized species (<20 μm); their high growth rate (maximal in May and June: 0–8 day−1) was characteristic of nanoplanktonic natural populations.
3. The positive correlation between phytoplankton losses and production indicates a close coupling between growth and loss processes.
4. With a high filtering rate (0.22 day−1 as an annual average), zoo-plankton impact is considerable at any time of the year but especially in late summer, when grazing losses exceeded primary production.
5. Despite the uncertainty concerning the meaning of 14C-primary production, the persistence of small algae throughout the year implies that a great part of the phytoplankton production was harvested by grazers which led to a recycling of organic matter within the water column.  相似文献

Impacts of mixing and stratification on the fate of primaryproduction were studied in an oligotrophic lake by comparingthe size-distributions of phytoplankton standing stock and productionin two basins, only one of which experiences seasonal thermalstratification. In both basins, the phytoplankton was dominatedby small cells (pico- and nanoplankton). The contribution ofpicoplankton to both biomass and production remained relativelyconstant throughout the season in both basins. Seasonal variationsin the size structure of phytoplankton communities do not agreewith the paradigm of dominance by small cells during summerstratification and dominance of larger cells during spring andfall mixing events. Nutrient control of productivity throughmixing and stratification is unlikely to affect the structureof phytoplankton communities when nutrients (allochthonous)derived from the catchment basin or sediments are in short supply. In such environments, nutrients (autochthonous) are largelyderived in the lake through heterotrophic food web processessuch as grazing, excretion and decomposition. Maximum ratesof production and losses in July and August in both basins areconsistent with increased regeneration and may represent a responseof larger-sized cells to higher nutrient availability resultingfrom enhanced grazing on picoplankton. The high correlationbetween the rates of loss and of potential growth for the phytoplanktoncommunity during all sampling periods, and the relative constancyof the picoplankton biomass, leads us to propose a long-term,steady-state equilibrium in the phytoplankton community underthe control of grazing by herbivores and/or other loss processes.  相似文献

The influence of the size distribution of phytoplankton on changes in the planktonic food web structures with eutrophication was examined using natural planktonic communities in two world-famous lakes: Lake Baikal and Lake Biwa. The size distribution of phytoplankton and the ratio of heterotrophic to autotrophic biomass (H/A ratio), indicating the balance between primary production and its consumption, were investigated in the lakes of different trophic status. The results revealed that microphytoplankton (>20μm) in mesotrophic Lake Biwa, and picophytoplankton (<2μm) or nanophytoplankton (2–20μm) in oligotrophic Lake Baikal, comprised the highest proportion of the total phytoplankton biomass. The H/A ratio was lower in Lake Biwa (<1) than in Lake Baikal (>1). The low H/A ratio in Lake Biwa appeared to be the consequence of the lack of consumption of the more abundant microphytoplankton, which were inferior competitors in nutrient uptake under oligotrophic conditions but less vulnerable to grazing. As a result, unconsumed microphytoplankton accumulated in the water column, decreasing the H/A ratio in Lake Biwa. Our results showed that food web structure and energy flow in planktonic communities were greatly influenced by the size distribution of phytoplankton, in conjunction with bottom-up (nutrient uptake) and top-down (grazing) effects at the trophic level of primary producers.  相似文献

1. Over a 1-year period, twenty controlled experiments were performed using small mesocosms (20-l clear plastic carboys) and plankton communities collected from four sites in shallow, subtropical Lake Okeechobee, Florida. In replicated treatments, macrozooplankton grazers were excluded by size fractionation (115 μm), and/or nutrients (N and P) were added, and impacts on phytoplankton biomass and productivity were measured after 3-day incubations.
2. In most experiments (fifteen out of twenty), there was no significant effect of zooplankton exclusion on phytoplankton biomass or productivity, but there were significant increases in those attributes due to nutrient additions. The magnitude of the responses was a function of light availability at the collection sites.
3. In three experiments, zooplankton exclusion led to declines in phytoplankton biomass and productivity, suggesting that animals may sometimes have net positive effects on the phytoplankton, perhaps via nutrient recycling.
4. In only two experiments was there evidence of net negative impacts of grazers on the phytoplankton. In both instances, cladocerans ( Daphnia ambigua and Eubosmina tubicen ) were dominant in the zooplankton. However, the increases in chlorophyll a due to zooplankton exclusion were small (5–20%), probably because of the small size and relatively low grazing rates of the cladocerans.
5. The results support the hypothesis that phytoplankton biomass in Lake Okeechobee is little affected by herbivorous macrozooplankton. This may be a common feature of lowland tropical and subtropical lakes.  相似文献

Alchichica is a warm-monomictic, oligotrophic lake whose phytoplanktonic biomass is dominated by large size (average ca. 55 μm) diatoms. The fast sinking phytoplankton leads to silica, and other nutrient exportation out of the productive zone of the lake. The aim of the present study was to identify and measure the sedimentation fluxes of the diatom species and their temporal dynamics to better understand the magnitude of silica and carbon fluxes. Sediment-traps were exposed at three different depths and collected monthly. A total of 13 diatom species were observed in the traps. The maximum diatom flux was in February (304 × 106 cells m−2 day−1) related to the winter diatom bloom. The diatom silica (DSi) fluxes varied from 2.2 to 2,997 mg m−2 day−1 and the diatom carbon (DC) fluxes from 1.2 to 2,918 mg m−2 d−1. Cyclotella alchichicana was the main contributor (>98%) to the total DSi and DC fluxes. The annual diatom (15 × 109 cells m−2 year−1), DSi (147 g m−2 year−1) and DC (92 g m−2 year−1) fluxes are higher than in other aquatic ecosystems of similar or even higher trophic conditions. Our findings in Alchichica are indicative of the relevance of the phytoplankton type and size in understanding the role tropical and oligotrophic lakes play regarding silica and carbon fluxes. In addition, our results support previous findings suggesting that inland aquatic ecosystems are more important than formerly thought in processing carbon, and can, therefore, affect regional carbon balances.  相似文献
