We investigated whether Melipona quadrifasciata worker mandibular gland secretions contribute directly to their cuticular hydrocarbon profile. The mandibular gland secretion composition and cuticular surface compounds of newly emerged worker bees, nurse bees, and foragers were determined by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry and compared. Both the mandibular gland secretions and the cuticular surface compounds of all worker stages were found to be composed almost exclusively of hydrocarbons. Although the relative proportion of hydrocarbons from the cuticular surface and gland secretion was statistically different, there was a high similarity in the qualitative composition between these structures in all groups of bees.  相似文献

【目的】本试验旨在研究不同发育温度对意大利蜜蜂Apis mellifera ligustica工蜂归巢能力及学习记忆相关基因表达的影响。【方法】选择3群群势一致的意大利蜜蜂,控制蜂王在一张经工蜂清理的工蜂巢脾中产卵48 h,之后移至孵化区。子脾即将封盖时,平均分成3块,分别放入33℃(Ⅰ组)、35℃(Ⅱ组)、37℃(Ⅲ组)的恒温恒湿箱中继续发育(相对湿度为75%±5%),每群为1个重复。工蜂羽化出房时,用不同颜色标记不同发育温度下羽化的工蜂,并放回原蜂王产卵群,测定其采集时期在1 000 m、2 000 m的回归率及不同日龄(刚出房,10日龄,20日龄)工蜂3个记忆相关基因[谷氨酸受体A型基因(Glu-RA)、N-甲基-D-天冬氨酸受体1型基因(Nmdar1)、酪氨酸受体1型基因(tyr1)]的表达情况。【结果】结果表明:试验Ⅱ组和试验Ⅲ组发育的采集蜂在1 000 m和2 000 m处的回归率均显著高于Ⅰ组,但试验Ⅱ组与试验Ⅲ组之间差异不显著;试验Ⅱ组和Ⅲ组刚出房工蜂、10日龄工蜂和20日龄工蜂的Glu RA和Nmdar1基因相对表达量显著高于试验Ⅰ组,但试验Ⅱ组与Ⅲ组之间差异不显著;试验Ⅱ组刚出房工蜂的Tyr1基因相对表达量显著高于试验Ⅰ组与Ⅲ组,但试验Ⅰ组与试验Ⅲ组之间差异不显著,另外,各试验组10日龄和20日龄工蜂Tyr1基因相对表达量差异均不显著。【结论】过低发育温度会影响蜜蜂的归巢能力和记忆相关基因的表达。  相似文献

Previous studies suggest that older honey bee workers possess an inhibitory signal that regulates behavioral development in younger bees. To study how this inhibitor is transmitted, bees were reared for 7 days in double-screen cages, single-screen cages, or unrestricted in a typical colony (control bees). Double-screen cages prevented physical contact with colony members while single-screen cages allowed only antennation and food exchange. Bees reared in double-screen cages showed accelerated endocrine and behavioral development; they had significantly higher rates of juvenile hormone biosynthesis and juvenile hormone titers than did control bees and also were more likely to become precocious foragers. Relative to the other two groups, bees reared in single-screen cages showed intermediate juvenile hormone biosynthesis rates and titers, and intermediate rates of behavioral development. These results indicate that physical contact is required for total inhibition. We also began to test the hypothesis that worker mandibular glands are the sources of an inhibitory signal. Old bees with mandibular glands removed were significantly less inhibitory towards young bees than were sham-operated and unoperated bees. These results suggest that an inhibitor is produced by the worker mandibular glands. Accepted: 29 January 1998  相似文献

Summary The electrophoretical protein patterns of hypopharyngeal glands, larval food ofMelipona, and royal jelly ofApis were compared.Since protein patterns of hypopharyngeal glands from newly emerged workers, brood cell provisioners and foragers are similar to freshly deposited larval food, the identical protein bands probably represent actual gland secretion. This suggests that, as inApis, the glands secrete proteins to the larval food, and maintain this ability throughout life, although at slightly different intensities, according to the activity of the bees.The similarity on the electrophoretic profiles of the major larval food protein inApis andMelipona is an interesting finding because of its probable evolutionary significance.  相似文献

To test the hypothesis that colonies of honey bees composedof workers with faster rates of adult behavioral developmentare more defensive than colonies composed of workers with slowerbehavioral development, we determined whether there is a correlationbetween genetic variation in worker temporal polyethism andcolony defensiveness. There was a positive correlation for thesetwo traits, both for European and Africanized honey bees. Thecorrelation was larger for Africanized bees, due to differencesbetween Africanized and European bees, differences in experimentaldesign, or both. Consistent with these results was the findingthat colonies with a higher proportion of older bees were moredefensive than colonies of the same size that had a lower proportionof older bees. There also was a positive correlation betweenrate of individual behavioral development and the intensityof colony flight activity, and a negative correlation betweencolony defensiveness and flight activity. This suggests thatthe relationship between temporal polyethism and colony defensivenessmay vary with the manner in which foraging and defense dutiesare allocated among a colony's older workers. These resultsindicate that genotypic differences in rates of worker behavioraldevelopment can influence the phenotype of a honey bee colonyin a variety of ways.  相似文献

通过氯气球悬挂意蜂(Apis mellifera)雌蜂及提取物等方法模拟蜂王婚飞交尾试验,比较不同生理状态的雌蜂及其提取物对雄蜂的性引诱力,结果表明:1.在工峰、处女王与产卵王及其提取物中,以产卵王及其提取物对雄峰性诱最大.平均分别为16只和14.3只雄蜂;2.不同数量的处女王提取物对雄蜂引诱力存在差异.以3只处女王提取物对雄蜂引诱力最大,平均引诱31.3只雄蜂;3.1000烛光以上的光照比400烛光以下的光照更有利于雄蜂的水分,且雄蜂集聚的个性体敏越多,相互激活力越强。  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate an underlying mechanism of the apparent tolerance of Africanized honey bees (AHB) to Varroa jacobsoni mites in Mexico. This was achieved by conducting the first detailed study into the mites' reproductive biology in AHB worker cells. The data was then compared directly with a similar study previously carried out on European honey bees (EHB) in the UK. A total of 1071 singly infested AHB worker cells were analyzed and compared with the data from 908 singly infested EHB worker cells. There was no significant difference between the number of mother mites dying in the cells (AHB = 2.0%, EHB = 1.8%); the mean number of eggs laid per mite (AHB = 4.86, EHB = 4.93); the number of mites producing no offspring (AHB = 12%, EHB = 9%); and developmental times of the offspring in worker cells of AHB and EHB. However, there was a major difference between the percentage of mother mites producing viable adult female offspring (AHB = 40%, EHB = 75%). This was caused by the increased rate of mite offspring mortality suffered by the first (male) and second (female) offspring in AHB worker cells. Therefore, only an average of 0.7 viable adult female offspring are produced per mite in AHB, compared to 1.0 in EHB.  相似文献

A highly polymorphic locus in the honey bee, Apis mellifera L., was detected with genomic probe pB178. Eighty-five alleles, consisting of Msp I and Dde I RFLPs, were found among the Old and New World bees tested. Forty-one Msp I and 43 Dde I restriction fragment patterns, or variants, were identified. Variants and alleles were discontinuously distributed in Old World European and African subspecies. Principal coordinate analysis of the genetic distances between the alleles resulted in the identification of three distinct groups corresponding to three groups of honey bee races with historically different geographical distributions: east European A. m. ligustica and A. m. caucasica ; west European A. m. mellifera ; and South African A. m. scutellata . The clustering of alleles into these groups is consistent with previous honey bee phylogeographic studies, employing other nuclear and mitochondrial DNA markers, which in part support the evolutionary history of the honey bee hypothesized by Ruttner based on morphometric and allozyme data. The majority of alleles in bees from the USA grouped with those found in east European bees, while other alleles grouped with alleles found in A. m. mellifera . While the majority of the alleles in neotropical bees grouped with or were identical to African alleles, other alleles grouped with alleles found in A. m. mellifera, A. m. ligustica , and A. m. caucasica . Clues to the ancestry of neotropical bees may be found in the identification of alleles that were identical or more similar to alleles found in South African and west European bees; evidence for west European ancestry has been suggested using other taxonomic characters that were not unique to west European bees. Both west European and African alleles were found in individual neotropical colonies, which may indicate that honey bee subspecies which evolved allopatrically have hybridized in the human-assisted extension of their original geographical ranges.  相似文献

A technique was developed to allow ultra‐low volume (ULV) application of an oil formulation of the deuteromycete, Metarhizium flavoviride Gams & Rozsypal, to Apis mellifera (Linnaeus). In the first experiment, application of a dose equivalent to twice the expected field application rate killed 30% of the bees and a twenty‐fold dose killed 87%. In a second experiment, a realistic field dose formulated in oil killed 11% of the bees and a similar dose formulated in water killed 8%. The dose applied effectively killed the target host, the desert locust Schistocerca gregaria (Forskål). Application of a chemical pesticide comprising an organophosphate and two pyrethroids at a dose that was just sub‐lethal to locusts, killed all treated bees. Very few untreated bees died. The results demonstrated the feasibility of safety testing a mycopesticide with bees as a non‐target organism. In addition, it was demonstrated that the mycopesticide currently under development for the control of locusts and grasshoppers was quantifiably less hazardous to bees than the chemical pesticide.  相似文献

  1. Crop pollination generally increases with pollinator diversity and wild pollinator visitation. To optimize crop pollination, it is necessary to investigate the pollination contribution of different pollinator species. In the present study, we examined this contribution of honey bees and non‐Apis bees (bumble bees, mason bees and other solitary bees) in sweet cherry.
  2. We assessed the pollination efficiency (fruit set of flowers receiving only one visit) and foraging behaviour (flower visitation rate, probability of tree change, probability of row change and contact with the stigma) of honey bees and different types of non‐Apis bees.
  3. Single visit pollination efficiency on sweet cherry was higher for both mason bees and solitary bees compared with bumble bees and honey bees. The different measures of foraging behaviour were variable among non‐Apis bees and honey bees. Adding to their high single visit efficiency, mason bees also visited significantly more flower per minute, and they had a high probability of tree change and a high probability to contact the stigma.
  4. The results of the present study highlight the higher pollination performance of solitary bees and especially mason bees compared with bumble bees and honey bees. Management to support species with high pollination efficiency and effective foraging behaviour will promote crop pollination.

对意大利蜜蜂 Apis mellifera ligustica L工蜂唾腺和中肠中淀粉酶、蛋白酶、蔗糖酶、果胶酶和海藻糖酶5种消化酶进行活性测定,发现巾肠的蛋门酶和蔗糖酶活性较唾腺高,有显著性差异;唾腺的果胶酶活性较中肠高,有显著性差异;唾腺与中肠的淀粉酶和海藻糖酶没有显著性差异.表明意大利蜜蜂工蜂对蔗糖和蛋白的消化主要由中肠分泌的消化酶来完成,唾腺起辅助作用;对果胶的消化主要在唾腺,中肠起辅助作用;而在淀粉和海藻糖的消化过程中唾腺和中肠都有很重要的作用.  相似文献

Summary Different-aged honey bees were either kept in a cage together with young sisters for eight days or lived in their colony. Following an injection of14C-phenylalanine (Phe) we measured incorporation of14C-Phe into head protein and total protein, as well as the size of the hypopharyngeal glands. While confined in a cage for four hours, injected bees (from colony or cage) dispensed the14C-labelled protein-rich products of their hypopharyngeal glands to recipients. Eight-day-old colony bees had well developed hypopharyngeal glands, whereas at the age of sixteen days the glands had already decreased in size. Young caged bees had smaller hypopharyngeal glands. Colony bees had higher incorporation rates into total protein and head protein than bees living in a cage. Bees of different age classes, irrespective of caging, fed the same number of recipients; but the amount of14C-labelled protein-rich jelly distributed by caged bees was significantly smaller than that distributed by colony bees. Our results indicate that trophallaxis between young donor workers and newly emerged recipient worker bees is not the key factor for regular development and activity of the hypopharyngeal glands.Dedicated to Achim Lass's daughter Katrin.  相似文献

This study examined the migration of tracheal mites (Acarapis woodi) into honey bees (Apis mellifera) from different colonies and the relative attraction of mites to hexane extracts from the external body surfaces of young bees. Relative resistance of bees from different colonies initially was assessed with a field bioassay that involved tagging newly emerged bees, pooling them in heavily mite-infested colonies, retrieving them 7 days later, and examining them for tracheal mite prevalence and abundance. For those colonies identified as most resistant and least resistant, cuticular chemicals were extracted in hexane from frozen, newly emerged worker bees. These extracts were presented to individual tracheal mites in pairwise fashion in a laboratory bioassay. The results demonstrated that mites prefer extracts of bees from some colonies more than others, however, no consistent differences were demonstrated. Our inability to predict mite responses to extracts based on our initial assessment of relative resistance indicates that other mechanisms of resistance influence mite success in colonizing new host bees.  相似文献

High-fidelity PCR of 16S rRNA sequences was used to identify bacteria associated with worker adults of the honeybee subspecies Apis mellifera capensis and Apis mellifera scutellata. An expected approximately 1.5-kb DNA band, representing almost the entire length of the 16S rRNA gene, was amplified from both subspecies and cloned. Ten unique sequences were obtained: one sequence each clustered with Bifidobacterium (Gram-positive eubacteria), Lactobacillus (Gram-positive eubacteria), and Gluconacetobacter (Gram-negative alpha-proteobacteria); two sequences each clustered with Simonsiella (beta-proteobacteria) and Serratia (gamma-proteobacteria); and three sequences each clustered with Bartonella (alpha-proteobacteria). Although the sequences relating to these six bacterial genera initially were obtained from either A. m. capensis or A. m. scutellata or both, newly designed honeybee-specific 16S rRNA primers subsequently amplified all sequences from all individual workers of both subspecies. Attempts to amplify these sequences from eggs have failed. However, the wsp primers designed to amplify Wolbachia DNA from arthropods, including these bees, consistently produced a 0.6-kb DNA band from individual eggs, indicating that amplifiable bacterial DNA was present. Hence, the 10 bacteria could have been acquired orally from workers or from other substrates. This screening of 16S rRNA sequences from A. m. capensis and A. m. scutellata found sequences related to Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium which previously had been identified from other honeybee subspecies, as well as sequences related to Bartonella, Gluconacetobacter, Simonsiella/Neisseria, and Serratia, which have not been identified previously from honeybees.  相似文献

Summary Honey bees of different age and castes were investigated calorimetrically at 20, 25 and 30 °C. Experiments were completed by endoscopic observation of the insects in the visible and the near infrared range and by acoustical monitoring and subsequent frequency analysis of various locomotor activities. Direct calorimetric results of this paper are compared with data of indirect calorimetry from the literature using a respiratory quotient of 1.00 and 21.13 J consumed. Agreements between both methods are generally good. The results show that weight-specific heat production rates increase with age of worker bees by a factor of 5.6 at 30 °C, 3.7 at 25 °C and 40.0 at 20 °C. In groups of foragers the heat production decreases with growing group size to around 6% of the value for an isolated bee. The presence of a fertile queen or of brood reduces the heat output of a small worker group significantly. Adult drones exhibit a much higher metabolic rate (up to 19.7-fold at 20 °C) than juveniles with strong fluctuations in the power-time curves. Fertile queens show a less pronounced heat production rate than virgin queens (54% at 30 °C, 87% at 25 °C and 77% at 20 °C). Calorimetric unrest is much higher for young than for adult queens. Heat production is very low in both uncapped and capped brood and less than 30% of that of a newly emerged worker. In most cases temperature showed a significant influence on the metabolic level, although its sign was not homogeneous between the castes or even within them. Abstract. Cohorts of worker honey bees from a single parental hive, cross-fostered into colonies which differed in population and other colony parameters, were assessed for activities of enzymes involved in metabolic detoxication. Activities of glutathione S-transferase and mixed-function oxidase enzymes were negatively correlated with foster colony population, but positively correlated with the ratio of larvae (brood)/adult workers. Worker bees which had begun foraging had enzyme activity levels higher than any found in bees which were still performing in-hive duties. Elevated levels of detoxifying enzymes in colonies with low populations and high ratios of larvae/adults may be a protective mechanism to prevent poisoning of larvae by toxins brought to the colony by foragers.  相似文献

The cephalic salivary glands of some species of bees are exclusive and well developed only in Apinae. These glands were studied with light and scanning electron microscopy in workers, queens and males from the honey bee Apis mellifera, and the stingless bee Scaptotrigona postica in different life phases. The results show that the cephalic salivary glands are present in females of both the species, and in males of S. postica. Nevertheless, they are poorly developed in young males of A. mellifera. In both species, gland growth is progressive from the time of emergence to the oldest age but, in A. mellifera males, the gland degenerates with age. Scanning electron microscopy shows that the secretory units of newly emerged workers are collapsed while in older workers they are turgid. Some pits on the surface of the secretory units correspond to open intercellular spaces. The possible functions of these glands in females and males of both species are discussed.  相似文献

Experimental work was conducted at two apiaries located in Irbid district and in Shuna North, Jordan, during the years 2004–2006. The aims of these investigations were to estimate the seasonal changes in the infestation rates of the bee louse (Braula sp.) and to develop an easy and rapid method of estimating the infestation rate on workers with bee Braula. Two major honey bee subspecies are reared in Jordan; Apis mellifera carnica and Apis mellifera syriaca were used in this study. The results showed that the infestation rate began to increase rapidly in May, reaching the season's maximum rate of 16.2%, 15.8% and 17.4% for A. m. carnica and 22.6%, 23.9% and 22.9% for A. m. syriaca in December of 2004, 2005 and 2006, respectively. The maximum adult numbers of bees were found in April and June, whereas the minimum for the year was in January in both honey bee subspecies colonies during the study period. The actual population of the bee louse could be estimated by counting the daily dropped lice and multiplying by a factor of 158. This factor is valid for the experimental colonies of both subspecies kept for 3 years under semi‐arid Mediterranean conditions.  相似文献
