Introduction of sculpins into a stream previously devoid of these predators significantly reduced drift rate of Gammarus pulex. The drift of insect larvae was not affected. High amounts of exudates after implantation of sculpins were probably responsible for the low number of drifting G. pulex specimens. Laboratory experiments confirmed reduced locomotory activity of G. pulex when exposed to caged sculpins, an observation that excludes reduced drift activity as a result only of predation.The average size of drifting G. pulex specimens was larger during the night than during the day. This result is in accordance with the hypothesis that large individuals should, in relation to small ones, turn nocturnal because of greater predation risk during daytime. Presence of sculpins did not alter the size composition of drifting G. pulex.  相似文献

Diel activity ofJesogammarus spinopalpus was monitored by an actograph using infra-red beams. The overall level and diel pattern of activity differed between males and females, and between the single and precopula phases. Single males were more active during the dark period (night) (153 intercepts/h) than during the light period (daytime) (50 intercepts/h), showing a clearly nocturnal habit, whereas the activity of single females was very low both at night (18 intercepts/h) and in the daytime (8 intercepts/h). The activity pattern of precopula pairs was nocturnal, but the level of activity was lower than that of single males (48 intercepts/h at night and 6 intercepts/h in the daytime). The sexual difference in activity level may reflect behavioral tactics during reproduction.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Males of the cricket, Gryllus campestris L. (Orthoptera: Gryllidae), displayed three different diel patterns in the timing of their calling song: 55% of all males investigated were dark-active, 25% light-active and 20% light-and-dark-active. Dark-active males continued to stridulate in both constant darkness (DD) and constant light (LL) during the subjective night, with a circadian period usually shorter (in DD) or longer (in LL) than 24h. Light-active males were mainly silent in DD but showed a circadian rhythm in LL, though with a 180° phase shift, i.e. activity during subjective night. This suggests that daytime activity has developed from nocturnal activity by a mechanism which prevents stridulation during darkness, and that both patterns are driven by the same endogenous clock. In the light-and-dark-active males some stridulation takes place during darkness, so dark inhibition is not complete. Such incomplete inhibition seemed to occur only in highly active animals. The three diel distribution patterns of the calling song are discussed in relation to sharing the chances of attracting females.  相似文献

This article compared the effects of spontaneous obesity on the daily profile in the relative amount of the leptin receptor (LepRb), and its output. That is the precursor Pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) over a 24-hour period and compared with differences in locomotion and food intake in periods of artificial light. Differences between lean and obese mice were examined, as were sex differences. Body weight, food intake and locomotor activity were monitored in freely moving lean and obese mice. Hypothalamic tissue was collected at 5 h, 10 h, 15 h, 19 h and 24 h. Samples were analyzed by western blotting to determine the relative presence of protein for LepRb, STAT3 phosphorylation (by pSTAT3/STAT3 ratio) and POMC. Obese mice were 60% less active in locomotion than lean mice during the night. While both locomotor activity and food intake were noticeably greater during the day in obese mice than in lean mice, the hypothalamus in obese mice showed a lower relative abundance of POMC and reduced pSTAT3/STAT3 ratio and leptin receptors. Behavioral and biochemical differences were more evident in obese females than in obese males. These results indicate that obesity in N. alstoni affects hypothalamic leptin signaling according to sex.  相似文献

In many moths, male attraction to the blend of synthetic sex pheromone releasing continuously in the field shows an apparent circadian rhythm similar to that of locomotion activity. In this study, the daily rhythms of electroantennography (EAG) and behavioral responses to sex pheromone, and the daily rhythms of locomotion activity were measured in male beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). The peaks of males trapped by light and sex pheromone were all during the latter part of the night in the field. However, there was no significant variation among time intervals in the EAG responses of male antennae to sex pheromone stimuli. The principal period of locomotion activity under L15:D9 (LD) continued to occur during the scotophase and the subjective scotophase in the day of constant darkness (DD1) and the second of two consecutive days of constant darkness (DD2). The majority of males contacted the sex pheromone source in a wind tunnel during the latter part of the scotophase under LD and the subjective scotophase for DD1 and DD2. There were significant associations between the rhythm of the behavioral response to sex pheromone and locomotion activity. These results suggested that the male's behavioral response to sex pheromone in the beet armyworm could be observed only until locomotion activity of the male occurred at the end of the dark period, despite sex pheromone being released continuously from synthetic pheromone‐baited traps in the field.  相似文献

To elucidate the relationship between locomotion activity and reproductive status versus age after eclosion of the rice bug, Leptocorisa chinensis, locomotion activity and mating behavior were investigated by use of an actograph and video recording system. Locomotion activity of males and females 3, 7, 14, and 21 days after eclosion was recorded. High locomotion activity was observed in the scotophase. In both sexes, the activity pattern changed with age; that is, settling mode was observed in younger (3 and 7 days old) individuals and locomotion mode in older (14 and 21 days old) individuals. Locomotion activity in the scotophase in settling-mode individuals was lower than in locomotion-mode individuals, and they often stayed on rice panicles all day. On the other hand, the activity of locomotion-mode individuals was high throughout the scotophase. Most locomotion-mode males had mature gonads. Courtship and mating behavior occurred in the scotophase. The results indicate that L. chinensis adults spend a lot of time on food plants and their gonads develop during the young, teneral period. They subsequently change to the locomotive mode and move around, probably for reproductive activity.  相似文献

The hourly and daily variation of calling behavior and sex pheromone production by the female black cutworm moth, Agrotis ypsilon (Rottemberg), were investigated. Both calling behavior and titers of five sex pheromone components showed distinct diel rhythms, and peak periods of calling and pheromone titer were synchronous. Females began to call on the first night after eclosion and called mainly during the second half of the scotophase. The percentage of females calling increased in 1 to 3-d-old females and decreased in 3 to 7-d-old females. Females advanced their calling time with increasing age (1 to 7 d). GC-MS analysis of hexane extracts of pheromone glands revealed that the titers of the five sex pheromone components were very low on the first night after eclosion, but increased sharply and peaked on the third night. Titers decreased greatly with increasing age (3 to 7 d), but from the onset of the scotophase to 4.5 h into scotophase, titers remained invariate. However, from 4.5 to 7 h, pheromone titers, especially that of the primary component Z7-12:Ac, increased sharply and peaked. After the peak, the titers decreased greatly at 8 h, and thereafter decreased gradually to the level before 4.5 h. The quantity of each component almost reached zero after lights-on.  相似文献

Abstract The speed of acclimatory changes in apparent energy of activation (Ea) of NAD malate dehydrogenase was analysed in four clones of Lathyms japonicus Willd. collected over a 16° latitudinal gradient in eastern North America. Plants were grown initially for six months at either 7° night/15° day or 22° night/30° days. Following reciprocal switches in these two contrasting thermo-periods, energy of activation was relatively stable for 12 h, then oscillated until 48 h, and stabilized in about 72 h. The results suggest that the acclimation response in Ea is not due to near-instantaneous conformational changes in isozymes, but is directed primarily by temperature-mediated structural and/or functional modifications during de novo synthesis of the forms of the enzymes.  相似文献

Little is known about the occurrence of individual variation in sexual behavior and how maternal nutrition can affect this variation. We tested the hypothesis that male offspring of female meadow voles, Microtus pennsylvanicus, that were 30% food restricted (FR) during days 1–7 of lactation (FR 1–7), days 8–14 of lactation (FR 8–14), or late days 15–21 of lactation (FR 15–21) lactation show persistent, negative effects on their sexual behavior as adults relative to male offspring of females that were not food restricted. We measured three components of sexual behavior, attractivity, proceptivity, and receptivity, beginning when the males were 98 d of age. Food restriction during middle lactation (FR 8–14) but not during early (FR 1–7) and late lactation (FR 15–21) was sufficient to induce adult male voles to produce anogenital marks that were not as attractive as those produced by control males. Food restriction during lactation did not affect the proceptive behavior of male voles but did affect their receptivity. Only four of 12 FR 8–14 male voles mated compared to nine of 12 FR 1–7 males, eight of 12 FR 15–21 males, and eight of 11 control males. However, no differences existed in their copulatory behavior among the males that did mate. The body weight of FR 1–7 and FR 8–14 males was lower than that of FR 15–21 and control males when they were between 22 d of age (weaning) and 48 d of age (puberty) but was similar when the males were 98 d of age. Food intake was similar for the FR and control males between day 22 and day 98. It remains unclear, however, whether this type of maternal effect represents strategic programing of offspring behavior in response to the environment experienced by mothers or is a product of developmental processes of food restriction prior to weaning (Evolution 58 , 2004, 2574).  相似文献

Felids are generally considered to be crepuscular and nocturnal in their activity, but few studies have attempted to analyze the variability of their activity patterns. We studied the daily activity of the Iriomote cat Prionailurus iriomotensis by radio-tracking on Iriomote Island, Japan. The general activity patterns of Iriomote cats showed slightly prevailing activity during dark periods of the day with particular peaks at dawn and dusk or during the early hours of the night. However, these patterns were clearly dependent on the sex and reproductive status of the cat. Peaks of cats’ activity coincided with those of their main prey. On average, the cats were active for thirteen hours per day. During the mating season, the rhythm of activity in males followed that of breeding females, but not that of non-breeding ones. Males exhibited 11% higher total daily activity and longer active bouts during the mating period than in the remainder of the year. Breeding females had additional mid-day activity peak during the nursing period, but their total time of activity per day was 16% lower than in the period of kittens’ independence. Their active bouts were shorter and more frequent during nursing than at other times. These results suggest that lactating females perform frequent movements to and from the den site to care for kittens. During the non-nursing period, females increased their activity, possibly in response to lowered prey abundance and the need of intensive foraging to recover after lactation. Seasonal and sexual variation of activity patterns in the Iriomote cats confirmed the existence of different reproductive strategies of males and females of these solitary carnivores.  相似文献

Induction of the carbon concentrating mechanism (CCM) has been investigated during the acclimation of 5% CO2‐grown Chlamydomonas reinhardtii 2137 mt + cells to well‐defined dissolved inorganic carbon (Ci) limited conditions. The CCM components investigated were active HCO3? transport, active CO2 transport and extracellular carbonic anhydrase (CAext) activity. The CAext activity increased 10‐fold within 6 h of acclimation to 0·035% CO2 and there was a further slight increase over the next 18 h. The CAext activity also increased substantially after an 8 h lag period during acclimation to air in darkness. Active CO2 and HCO3? uptake by C. reinhardtii cells were induced within 2 h of acclimation to air, but active CO2 transport was induced prior to active HCO3? transport. Similar results were obtained during acclimation to air in darkness. The critical Ci concentrations effecting the induction of active Ci transport and CAext activity were determined by allowing cells to acclimate to various inflow CO2 concentrations in the range 0·035–0·84% at constant pH. The total Ci concentration eliciting the induction and repression of active Ci transport was higher during acclimation at pH 7·5 than at pH 5·5, but the external CO2 concentration was the same at both pHs of acclimation. The concentration of external CO2 required for the full induction and repression of Ci transport and CAext activity were 10 and 100 μM , respectively. The induction of CAext and active Ci transport are not correlated temporally, but are regulated by the same critical CO2 concentration in the medium.  相似文献

2011年12月至2012年2月和2012年11月至2013年1月,采用瞬时扫描法,对山西平陆黄河湿地越冬的大天鹅进行了日间行为时间分配和活动节律的研究。结果表明,大天鹅在越冬期的主要行为是静息、运动和取食,分别占全部行为比例的(40.5±1.4)%、(22.8±0.9)%和(18.2±0.8)%。在日间节律方面,大天鹅的取食行为呈现早晚双高峰,静息行为的高峰则出现在早上和中午。对不同地点的大天鹅的行为时间分配研究表明,大天鹅在两地的行为时间分配存在明显差异。其中,在干扰强度较大的三湾村,运动和争斗行为更多;在干扰较小的关家窝村,静息和警戒行为更多。在行为时间分配与温度变化关系的研究中,通过Pearson相关性分析发现,大天鹅的取食、运动和理羽行为与温度成显著正相关,静息和警戒行为与温度呈现显著负相关。  相似文献

Diurnal and nocturnal activity patterns shown by different species will strongly determine the characteristics of signals as well as the sensory channels used during sexual interactions. Despite this, few studies have experimentally tested the effects of lighting and time of day on courtship characteristics in arthropods. Previous studies have shown that the wolf spider Schizocosa malitiosa can be active during the day or at night. We tested whether the period of the day affects the sexual behavior of S. malitiosa, by pairing males and females under diurnal or nocturnal conditions. We carried out mating trials in diurnal and nocturnal conditions in arenas containing female refuges. In diurnal conditions, male leg shaking behavior occurred at higher rates and consisted of greater leg raising angles relatively to nocturnal conditions. We did not find differences in mounts and mount latency between both experimental groups. In nocturnal conditions, female attacks and emergence from refuges were higher. Also, although mount occurrence did not differ between the two treatments, mounts inside the refuge were more frequent in diurnal conditions. Results suggest behavioral flexibility in male courtship and female receptivity responses relative to the time of the day.  相似文献

Researchers have reported on the diet of Leopardus tigrinus and ecological aspects, but studies of behavior are scarce. The aims of this study were to describe the time budget and activity patterns of 10 captive Leopardus tigrinus individuals. The group had an activity budget of 66% resting, 20.66% moving, 6.08% vigilant, 3.12% feeding, and 4.14% other activities during 720 hr of observations. The activity budgets of the males and females did not differ significantly; however, males ate more than did females. The nonhuman animals spent more time resting during the day than during the night. Moving, socializing, maintenance, and vigilance showed statistically higher mean values at night. Group analysis of the temporal pattern of behavior showed bimodal peaks. Activity levels were high from 5 a.m. to 6 a.m. and decreased through the day only to peak again at 7 p.m. Stereotypic pacing peaked at dawn and at dusk. Patterns of vigilance, feeding, and maintenance were also determined for the group during a 24-hr period. These results may be useful for the development of management plans and effective conservation strategies for captive cats.  相似文献

In this study, we investigated the effects of light on both the locomotion of intact animals and the swim motor program expressed by isolated brains in the gastropod Melibe leonina. Spontaneous locomotion (crawling and swimming) was examined during a period of natural lighting (L:D) to establish normal behavior, and then under two different light regimes: constant darkness (D:D) and constant light (L:L). In L:D, there was significantly more locomotor activity at night than during the day and this pattern continued in D:D. However, in L:L, activity was substantially reduced at all times. Using isolated brain preparations, we further demonstrated that the swim motor program was rapidly inhibited by light, and that this inhibition was mediated by the eyes. These results indicate that M. leonina displays a nocturnal activity pattern, and that light has a strong inhibitory effect on locomotion in the intact animal and on the swim motor program expressed by the isolated brain.  相似文献

Three different methods were used to compare the feeding patterns of active cyclopoids and cyclopoids in active diapause from different habitats. First, we offered 14C- labeled algal detritus to stage III, stage IV (two different physiological groups), and adult females of Acanthocyclops vernalis from temporary water-bodies of the Volga Delta. Second, we compared the functional responses of active and actively diapausing cyclopoids preying on copepod nauplii. Stage III, stage IV (various physiological groups), stage V, adult males and females of Acanthocyclops viridis, Cyclops kolensis, C. abyssorum sevani from the Volga Delta, Lake Sevan (Armenia), and Mozhaisk Reservoir (Moscow District) were tested. Finally, we examined the activity of digestive enzymes (proteases) of CIV of C. kolensis from Mozhaisk Reservoir at different temperatures and temperature acclimation regimes. All three approaches used have led to similar conclusions. Actively diapausing cyclopoids were capable of feeding on both plant and animal prey; however, their feeding rates and digestive enzyme activity were 2–8 times lower than those of active cyclopoids of similar size. At the initial stage of active diapause the feeding rates were comparable with those of active cyclopoids then declined to a low level during approximately two weeks. Transfer of cyclopoids undergoing winter diapause from ambient temperature (4 °C) to warmer water (20 °C) resulted in dramatic increase of proteases activity only if the acclimation period was relatively long (two weeks).  相似文献

Abstract. The circadian activity patterns of Anopheles stephensi Liston were examined before and after mating and throughout the gonotrophic cycle. In LD 12:12h, males and virgin females are active at dusk. After insemination, females are active at dusk and also for short bursts during much of the night. After blood-feeding, inseminated females are inactive for two nights. On becoming gravid, these females become highly active at dusk and, to a lesser extent, are also active later in the night. In contrast, blood-feeding and egg maturation have minimal effects on the activity pattern of virgin females, who continue to fly only during dusk periods, i.e. virgins continue with the activity pattern which would most likely lead to mating encounters. After oviposition, parous females resume the activity pattern characteristic of inseminated nulliparous females. In a light regime which simulates moonlit nights and normal days, inseminated females are more active overall and flight-burst durations are much longer than in LD 12:12h.  相似文献

Cyclic parthenogenesis is the ancestral mode of reproduction in the cladoceran crustacean, Daphnia pulex, but some populations have made the transition to obligate parthenogenesis and this is the only mode of reproduction known to occur in arctic populations. Melanism and polyploidy are also common in arctic populations of this species. Prior allozyme studies of arctic D. pulex revealed substantial levels of clonal diversity on a regional scale. Clonal groupings based on cluster analysis of allozyme genotypes do not conform to groupings based on the presence/absence of melanin or on ploidy level. In order to further elucidate genetic relationships among arctic D. pulex clones, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variation was examined in 31 populations from two Canadian high-arctic sites. The data were also compared to a previous study of mtDNA variation in populations from a Canadian low-arctic site. Cladistic analysis of restriction site variation of the entire mitochondrial genome and nucleotide sequence variation of the mitochondrial control region was used to construct genetic relationships among mitochondrial genotypes. Three distinct mitochondrial lineages were detected. One lineage was associated with diploid, nonmelanic clones and is the same as the lineage that is found in temperate populations of D. pulex. The other two lineages (A & B) were associated with polyploid, melanic clones. Sequence divergence between the A and B lineages was 2.4%. Sequence divergence between D. pulex and either of these two lineages exceeded 3%. It is suggested that the melanic, polyploid clones are hybrids between males of D. pulex (and/or a closely related congener, D. pulicaria) and females of either of two ancestral melanic species that have mitochondrial lineages A and B. Geographic patterns of mitochondrial diversity in ‘melanic’ lineage B support the hypothesis of an high-arctic refuge for the ancestral species during the last glacial period.  相似文献

The effect of variable autumn temperatures in combination with decreasing irradiance and daylength on photosynthesis, growth cessation and freezing tolerance was investigated in northern‐ and southern‐adapted populations of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and timothy (Phleum pratense) intended for use in regions at northern high latitudes. Plants were subjected to three different acclimation temperatures; 12, 6 and 9/3°C (day/night) for 4 weeks, followed by 1 week of cold acclimation at 2°C under natural light conditions. This experimental setup was repeated at three different periods during autumn with decreasing sums of irradiance and daylengths. Photoacclimation, leaf elongation and freezing tolerance were studied. The results showed that plants cold acclimated during the period with lowest irradiance and shortest day had lowest freezing tolerance, lowest photosynthetic activity, longest leaves and least biomass production. Higher acclimation temperature (12°C) resulted in lower freezing tolerance, lower photosynthetic activity, faster leaf elongation rate and higher biomass compared with the other temperatures. Photochemical mechanisms were predominant in photoacclimation. The northern‐adapted populations had a better freezing tolerance than the southern‐adapted except when grown during the late autumn period and at the highest temperature; then there were no differences between the populations. Our results indicate that the projected climate change in the north may reduce freezing tolerance in grasses as acclimation will take place at higher temperatures and shorter daylengths with lower irradiance.  相似文献

Animals of the amphipod Orchestia montagui are kept in constant darkness with two short light pulses. One pulse is applied at the beginning of subjective night (around the dusk) and the other one at the end of subjective night (around the dawn). The pulse duration is estimated in the order of one or two hours around the dusk as well as the dawn. The locomotor activity rhythm was monitored in individual animals in summer under constant temperature. Results revealed that whatever the experimental conditions, under continuous or interrupted darkness by pulses, two endogenous components have been highlighted. In fact, Periodogram analysis showed the presence of ultradian and circadian periods around 12 and 24 h, respectively. The shortest circadian period and the most important inter-individual variability was observed under pulse of 2 h around the dusk with mean value equal to τDD+pulse = 24h38′ ± 4h34′. The activity profiles are in majority unimodal. Moreover, the most activity peak showed a slipping of its location from the middle of subjective night under constant darkness to the middle of subjective day under pulse. Globally, the locomotor activity rhythm of O. montagui was better defined under pulses and specimens were significantly more active under continuous darkness. Moreover, a great variability around the activity time was observed especially with pulse of 1 h.  相似文献
