1. Mean retention times (MRTs) of fluid (marked with Co-EDTA), fine particles (mordanted with Yb) and large particles (mordanted with Cr) were measured in brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula), ringtail possums (Pseudocheirus peregrinus) and laboratory rabbits fed semipurified diets. 2. In brushtail possums there were no significant differences in MRT among the three digesta markers. 3. In ringtail possums MRTs of the fluid and fine particle markers were approximately twice that of the large particle marker, indicative of selective retention of both fluid and fine particles in the caecum. 4. In the rabbit MRT of fine particles was also greater than that of large particles, again indicative of selective retention of fine particles in the caecum. 5. Fibre digestibility was greater in the rabbits than in the ringtail possums, and greater for neutral-detergent fibre (including agar) but less for acid-detergent fibre in the rabbits than in the brushtails. Differences in fibre digestibility between brushtails and rabbits were explained by differences in patterns of digesta flow. However, the higher digestibilities of fibre in the rabbits than in the ringtail possums could not be explained on a similar basis.  相似文献

Bandicoots are opportunistic omnivores that feed on invertebrates, fungi and both epigeal and hypogeal plant parts. We examined the performance of the digestive tract of the long-nosed bandicoot (Perameles nasuta) in terms of intake and total digestibility, patterns of excretion of inert digesta markers, and likely sites of digesta retention, on two diets designed to mimic part of their natural plant and insect diets. On the insect diet (mealworm larvae), bandicoots virtually maintained body mass at a digestible energy intake of 511 kJ · kg-0.75 · day-1 and were in strongly positive nitrogen balance. In contrast, on the plant diet (shredded sweet potato), bandicoots ate only one-third as much digestible energy, lost 7% body mass, and were in negative nitrogen balance. Mean retention times of two particle markers on the plant diet (27.5 and 27.0 h) were more than double those on the insect diet (12.4 and 11.2 h), and on both diets the mean retention time of the fluid digesta marker was greater than those of the particle markers, indicating consistent selective retention of fluid digesta in the gut. It was seen radiographically than in mealwormfed bandicoots major sites of digesta retention were the distal colon and rectum, whereas in the sweet potato-fed animals the caecum and proximal colon were principal sites. It was concluded that retention of plant material in the caecum and proximal colon (the main sites of microbial digestion) and the preferential retention of fluid digesta (together with bacteria and small feed particles) in the caecum were important factors in the ability of bandicoots to switch between insect and plant foods, depending on relative availabilities, and thus to exploit nutritionally unpredictable environments.Abbreviations ADF acid-detergent fibre - bm body mass - Co-ED-TA cobalt-ethylenediaminetetra-acetic acid - CWC cell wall constituents - DE digestable energy - dm dry matter - EUN endogenous urinary nitrogen - ICP inductively-coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy - MFN metabolic faecal nitrogen - MRT mean retention time - NDF neutral-detergent fibre - ww wet weight  相似文献

To investigate digestive tract performance in Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus), food intake and digestibility, digesta passage rate, and gastrointestinal tract morphology were measured in captive animals fed low- or high-fibre diets. We used two markers (Co-ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid for solutes and Cr-mordanted cell walls for particles) to measure differential passage rates of digesta fractions in order to test for the presence of a colonic separation mechanism (CSM). Although dry-matter intakes on the high-fibre diet did not differ from those on the low-fibre diet, digestibilities of dry matter, neutral-detergent fibre, acid-detergent fibre, crude protein, and crude fat were all significantly lower on the high-fibre diet. Gross energy intake on the high-fibre diet also did not differ from that on the low-fibre diet, but energy lost in faeces was much higher than on the low-fibre diet; thus, energy digestibility and digestible energy intake were significantly lower on the high-fibre diet. The lengths and dry-tissue masses of all segments of the gastrointestinal tract tended to enlarge in response to increased dietary fibre, but only the total tract contents, contents of the small intestine, and length and dry-tissue mass of the caecum increased significantly. The mean retention time (MRT) of the particle marker was significantly greater than that of the solute marker on the low-fibre but not the high-fibre diet; the solute/particle differential retention ratio was 0.62 on the low-fibre diet and 0.90 on the high-fibre diet. Thus, there was no evidence for selective retention of the solute marker on either diet. The MRT of the particle marker was significantly lower on the high-fibre diet and in the same direction as the MRT of the solute marker. These results suggest that the granivorous Mongolian gerbil has no CSM but can adjust its digestive tract capacity to accommodate greater quantities of low-quality food.  相似文献

The capybara (Hydrochaeris hydrochaeris) is a hindgut fermenter whose digestive efficiency is comparable to that of ruminants on similar diets. It is an interesting case for study because it is the largest caecum fermenter and uses coprophagy as part of its digestive strategy. It practices coprophagy in the early morning and forages and defaecates in the evening. Its anatomy is well known but the limited information available about its digestive physiology has been obtained from captive animals. In this work we studied the capybara's digestive physiology, using microbial and chemical information from samples taken from wild capybaras in the early wet season in the morning (0600–0700 hours), noon (1200–1300 hours) and evening (1800–1900 hours), key points in the digestive cycle. Bacteria (cellulolytic and non-cellulolytic) and protozoa were present in high concentrations in the caecum and colon. There were no significant differences in nitrogen concentrations between digestive tract compartments in the coprophagy period (0600 hours), but in the other two periods nitrogen concentrations were significantly higher in the caecum than in the stomach and colon. This is suggestive of selective retention of microbial cells with fluid digesta in the caecum and of cecotrophy (the production of two distinctly different kinds of faeces — one kind called cecotrophes formed from caecal contents and ingested). The capybara hindgut (caecum and colon) with its content, was heavier during the dry season (period of poor diet quality) than in the wet season, but there were no significant seasonal differences between the stomach or small intestine and their contents. This suggests changes in the capacity of the hindgut, the site of microbial fermentation, related to seasonal variation in resource quality.Abbreviations NDF neutral-detergent fibre - SCFA Short-chain fatty acid(s)  相似文献

Omnivores such as the greater bilby (Macrotis lagotis) consume a variety of dietary items and often are faced with large changes in the nutrient composition of their food. This paper explores the basis for the dietary flexibility of the bilby by comparing digestive performance and digesta retention patterns of captive bilbies fed either an insect diet (mealworm larvae) or a plant diet (mixed seeds). Mean retention times (MRTs) of particle and solute markers in the gastrointestinal tract did not differ significantly between the two diets, but MRT of the particle marker was significantly longer than that of the solute marker on both the mealworm (particle: 23.5 h; solute: 17.9 h) and mixed seed (particle 33.0 h; solute: 30.2 h) diets. Lack of selective retention of solutes and small particles in the bilby gastrointestinal tract probably restricts them to relatively low-fibre diets, such as those based on seeds rather than leaves and stems of plants. It was observed radiographically that the major sites of digesta retention were the caecum, proximal colon and distal colon, and thus the hindgut is probably the principal site of microbial fermentation. The mealworms were more digestible than the mixed seeds, but digestible energy intake (mealworm: 939 kJ · kg−0.75 · d−1; mixed seed: 629 kJ · kg−0.75 · d−1) was high enough for maintenance of body mass and positive nitrogen balance on both diets. Thus, although bilbies may be limited in their ability to utilize high-fibre diets by a lack of selective retention of solutes and small particles in their hindgut, their digestive strategy is flexible enough to accommodate at least some diets of both animal and plant origin. Such a strategy should benefit an animal inhabiting environments in which food resources are unpredictable in their relative abundance. Accepted: 26 May 2000  相似文献

Mantled howler monkeys (Alouatta palliata) occupy a wide variety of tropical habitats and are the most folivorous of New World primates. However, their diet may include fruits, buds, petioles, and flowers, as well as leaves, suggesting they must cope with variations in the nutrient composition of their food. We studied the physiological basis of the dietary flexibility of these monkeys by comparing food choice, digestive performance and patterns of digesta flow in six adults, fed diets of either leaves or a mixture of fruit and leaves. Although monkeys ate similar amounts of the two diets, they ingested more digestible protein when offered the leaf diet, on which they lost body mass, but they ingested much more soluble sugars when offered fruit and leaves on which they gained mass. Digestibilities of dry matter, fat, energy and fibre did not differ between diets, but those of crude protein, soluble sugars and minerals were higher on the fruit–leaf diet. Mean retention times in the gut of solute (Co-EDTA) and particulate markers (Cr-mordanted cell walls) did not differ between diets, but on both diets the monkeys retained the particulate marker (mean retention time ca 55 h) for longer than they did the solute marker (MRT ca 50 h). A lack of selective retention of solutes and small particles in the gastro-intestinal tract of howler monkeys probably restricts them to mixed diets but their digestive strategy is sufficiently flexible to allow them to feed on a diet of leaves when fruit is unavailable.  相似文献

The gastrointestinal tract of omnivores such as bandicoots (Marsupialia: Peramelidae) must be able to process foods as different as invertebrates, fungi and plant material. We studied the mechanisms involved in the utilisation by captive northern brown bandicoots (Isoodon macrourus) of insect larvae and milled lucerne (Medicago sativa) hay incorporated into a basal diet of a commercial small carnivore mix. Animals on the plant-basal mix digested less dry matter, energy, lipid, fibre and total nitrogen, but consumed 79% more dry matter than those on the insect-basal mix. Consequently intake of digestible energy (i.e. energy absorbed) was not significantly different between diets. Mean retention time (MRT, the mean time a marker remains in the tract) of a large particle marker was shorter on the plant-basal mix, reflecting its higher intake, but MRT of a solute marker was not significantly different between diets. Consequently the solute marker was retained longer than the particle marker on the plant-basal mix, indicating selective retention of solutes and very small particles in the caecum on this diet. This was confirmed by a higher proportion of small particles in the caecum than the distal colon of road-killed I. macrourus. Thus the main responses by I. macrourus to the plant-basal mix appeared to be an increase in gastrointestinal tract capacity (from radiographic evidence), selective retention of solutes and very small particles in the caecum, and facilitated passage of less tractable large particles through the colon. As a consequence, food intake was higher on the plant-basal mix, which compensated for its lower digestibility, and intake of digestible energy was similar to that on the insect-basal mix. This considerable flexibility of the morphologically rather simple digestive tract of northern brown bandicoots helps to explain their ability to cope with naturally variable diets consisting of mainly invertebrates in summer to much more plant and fungal material in winter, and to survive in nutritionally dynamic environments such as heathlands where there can be dramatic changes in food type and availability following periodic wildfires. The diet of the orang utanPongo pygmaeus consists of fruit, leaves, communal insects, and bark, and contains appreciable amounts of non-starch polysaccharides. These complex carbohydrates require microbial fermentation before they can be used as an energy source by the orang utans. The gastrointestinal tract ofP. pygmaeus consists of a simple or unipartite stomach, a relatively long small intestine, and a complex haustrated caecum and colon. This morphology suggests that the capacious proximal colon is the principal site of digesta retention and fermentation of non-starch polysaccharides. We measured several parameters of digesta retention by giving three captive adultP. pygmaeus a pulse dose of inert markers specific for the solute and particulate phases of the digesta and collected their faeces at regular intervals over 192–338 hours. Transit times (times of first appearance of the markers in the faeces) and mean retention times (MRT) were long, consistent with a large complex gastro-intestinal tract. MRTs for the particulate marker were longer (p=0.032) than for the solute marker, indicative of selective retention of large particulate digesta. These results are consistent with the patterns of marker excretion in other mammals that use the digestive strategy of colon fermentation.

Galago moholi is a small nocturnal primate, which has a specialised diet of Acacia exudate and insects. Both exudate and insect exoskeletons contain beta-linked polysaccharides that can be used as an energy source by mammals via microbial fermentation. The morphology of the gastro-intestinal tract of G. moholi suggests that the complex, elongate caecum, proximal colon and ansa coli are most likely to be the fermentation compartment. The results of a digesta marker study showed that there was selective retention of the fluid phase of the digesta, a pattern commonly seen in small caecum-fermenting mammals. There was also retention of the particle marker in the gastro-intestinal tract. Comparison to these results with those from other mammals, including other bushbaby species, suggests that this was due to retention of particulate digesta in both the stomach and the ansa coli, a U-shaped loop in the proximal colon. The digestive strategy of the south-east African lesser bushbaby is best described as caeco-ansal fermentation, as the caecum, proximal colon and ansa coli function as distinct fermentation chambers. However, we contend that, because it is soluble polysaccharides in exudates travel with the fluid phase of the digesta, reach the hindgut sooner than particles of the insect exoskeleton, and are fermented faster than particulate digesta, that lesser bushbabies, in spite of their small size (approximately 200 g) are able to include an apparently low-quality food (exudate) in their diet.  相似文献

As gut capacity is assumed to scale linearly to body mass (BM), and dry matter intake (DMI) to metabolic body weight (BM(0.75)), it has been proposed that ingesta mean retention time (MRT) should scale to BM(0.25) in herbivorous mammals. We test these assumptions with the most comprehensive literature data collations (n=74 species for gut capacity, n=93 species for DMI and MRT) to date. For MRT, only data from studies was used during which DMI was also recorded. Gut capacity scaled to BM(1.06). In spite of large differences in feeding regimes, absolute DMI (kg/d) scaled to BM(0.76) across all species tested. Regardless of this allometry inherent in the dataset, there was only a very low allometric scaling of MRT with BM(0.14) across all species. If species were divided according to the morphophysiological design of their digestive tract, there was non-significant scaling of MRT with BM(0.04) in colon fermenters, BM(0.08) in non-ruminant foregut fermenters, BM(0.06) in browsing and BM(0.04) in grazing ruminants. In contrast, MRT significantly scaled to BM(0.24) (CI 0.16-0.33) in the caecum fermenters. The results suggest that below a certain body size, long MRTs cannot be achieved even though coprophagy is performed; this supports the assumption of a potential body size limitation for herbivory on the lower end of the body size range. However, above a 500 g-threshold, there is no indication of a substantial general increase of MRT with BM. We therefore consider ingesta retention in mammalian herbivores an example of a biological, time-dependent variable that can, on an interspecific level, be dissociated from a supposed obligatory allometric scaling by the morphophysiological design of the digestive tract. We propose that very large body size does not automatically imply a digestive advantage, because long MRTs do not seem to be a characteristic of very large species only. A comparison of the relative DMI (g/kg(0.75)) with MRT indicates that, on an interspecific level, higher intakes are correlated to shorter MRTs in caecum, colon and non-ruminant foregut fermenters; in contrast, no significant correlation between relative DMI and MRT is evident in ruminants.  相似文献

Ostriches (Struthio camelus) achieve digesta retention times, digesta particle size reduction and digestibilities equal to similar-sized herbivorous mammals, in contrast to some other avian herbivores. The sequence of digestive processes in their gastrointestinal tract, however, is still unexplored. Using two groups of four ostriches (mean body mass 75.1 ± 17.3 kg) kept on fresh alfalfa, we tested the effect of two intake levels (17 and 42 g dry matter kg(-0.75)d(-1)) on the mean retention time (MRT) of a solute and three different-sized (2, 10, 20 mm) particle markers, mean faecal particle size (MPS), and digestibility. Intake level did not affect MRT, but MPS (0.74 vs. 1.52 mm) and dry matter digestibility (81 vs. 78%). The solute marker (MRT 22-26 h) was excreted faster than the particle markers; there was no difference in the MRT of 10 and 20 mm particles (MRT 28-32 h), but 2mm particles were retained longer (MRT 39-40 h). Because the solute marker was not selectively retained, and wet-sieving of gut contents of slaughtered animals did not indicate smaller particles in the caeca, the long MRT of small particles is interpreted as intermittent excretion from the gizzard, potentially due to entrapment in small grit. The marker excretion pattern also showed intermittent peaks for all markers in five of the animals, which indicates non-continuous outflow from the gizzard. When adding our data to literature data on avian herbivores, a dichotomy is evident, with ostrich and hoatzin (Opisthocomus hoazin) displaying long MRTs, high digestibilities, and gut capacities similar to mammalian herbivores, and other avian herbivores such as grouse, geese or emus with shorter MRTs, lower fibre digestibilities and lower gut capacities. In the available data for all avian herbivores where food intake and MRTs were measured, this dichotomy and food intake level, but not body mass, was related to MRT, adding to the evidence that body mass itself may not be sole major determinant of digestive physiology. The most striking difference between mammalian and avian herbivores from the literature is the fundamentally lower methane production measured in the very few studies in birds including ostriches, which appears to be at the level of reptiles, in spite of general food intake levels of a magnitude as in mammals. Further studies in ostriches and other avian herbivores are required to understand the differences in digestive mechanisms between avian and mammalian herbivores.  相似文献

1. Wild water voles and captives on high fibre diets had significantly longer and heavier digestive tracts (especially the caecum) than captives fed a low fibre diet. 2. Increasing dietary cellulose increased food intake, faecal output and metabolic rate, and decreased digestibility. Some but not all added cellulose was digested. 3. The passage of food through the digestive tract was significantly faster on the diet with added cellulose. 4. Coprophagy included eating directly from the anus and eating faecal pellets from the floor of the cage. The frequency of the latter type increased significantly for animals on a high fibre diet.  相似文献

D+ (high digestion efficiency) and D- (low digestion efficiency) genetic chicken lines selected for divergent digestion efficiency were compared in this experiment. Gizzard functions were tested in terms of digesta mean retention time and reactions to high dilution of a corn diet with 15% coarse sunflower hulls. The corn standard (S) and high fibre (F) experimental diets were given from 9 days of age to chickens from both lines. Besides the measurements of growth efficiencies (9 to 20 days), digestibilities (20 to 23 days) and gut anatomy (0, 9, 29, 42 and 63 days), two digestive transit studies were performed at 9 and 29 days of age. For the transit studies, the S and F diets were labelled with 0.5% TiO2 and 1% Cr-mordanted sunflower hulls. These diets were fed ad libitum during 3 days, and then the birds were euthanized. The digestive contents were analysed for the determination of marker concentrations and mean retention times (MRTs) in digestive compartments (crop + oesophagus, proventriculus + gizzard, duodenum + jejunum, ileum, rectum + cloaca and caeca) were determined. D+ birds were confirmed as better digesters than D- birds during the growth period, in association with larger gizzard and pancreas, and lighter small intestine in D+ than in D-birds. The MRT in the proventriculus-gizzard system, higher in D+ than in D- birds, was a major factor associated with differences between D+ and D- birds regarding digestion efficiencies and gut anatomy. Diet dilution with fibres reduced differences in digestion efficiencies and proventriculus-gizzard MRT between lines. Differences in gut anatomy between lines tended to disappear after 8 weeks of age. In conclusion, this study showed that MRT in the proventriculus-gizzard system was a major factor associated with genotype differences between the D+ and D- genetic chicken lines selected for divergent digestion efficiency, with longer MRT found in D+ than in D- birds.  相似文献

The use of fruit-based diets by a small arboreal marsupial, the woolly opossum (Caluromys philander) was studied to elucidate the mechanisms used to compensate for a low dietary protein concentration. The passage of a liquid phase digesta marker (Cr-EDTA) through the gut was significantly faster when animals were fed a diet containing 0.45% N compared to that measured on a diet containing 0.90% N. The size of the gut of the two groups was similar except that the caecum of animals fed 0.45% N was significantly larger than in those animals fed 0.90% N. Animals fed a diet of 0.45% N ate significantly more food than those fed higher levels of nitrogen but there was no significant difference in the dry matter digestibility of the diet. The maintenance nitrogen requirement of the animals was 176 mg dietary N or 146 mg truly digestible nitrogen per kg metabolic body mass, with low losses of non-dietary faecal nitrogen being notable. There was no significant difference between diets in any measured parameter of urea metabolism and all animals recycled between 60% and 80% of the endogenously synthesised urea. It is evident that quantitative information on different microbial groups and their contribution in terms of activity in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract of humans and animals is required in order to formulate functional diets targeting improved gut function and host health. In this work, quantitative information on levels and spatial distributions of Bacteroides spp, Eubacterium spp, Clostridium spp, Escherichia coli, Bifidobacterium spp and Lactobacillus/Enterococcus spp. along the porcine large intestine was investigated using 16S rRNA targeted probes and fluorescent in situ hybridisation (FISH). Caecum, ascending colon (AC) and rectum luminal digesta from three groups of individually housed growing pigs fed either a corn-soybean basal diet (CON diet) or a prebiotic diet containing 10 g/kg oligofructose (FOS diet) or trans-galactooligosaccharides (TOS diet) at the expense of cornstarch were analysed. DAPI staining was used to enumerate total number of cells in the samples. Populations of total cells, Bacteroides, Eubacterium, Clostridium and Bifidobacterium declined significantly (P < 0.05) from caecum to rectum, and were not affected by dietary treatments. Populations of Lactobacillus/Enterococcus and E. coli did not differ throughout the large intestine. The relative percent (%) contribution of each bacterial group to the total cell count did not differ between caecum and rectum, with the exception of Eubacterium that was higher in the AC digesta. FISH analysis showed that the sum of all bacterial groups made up a small percentage of the total cells, which was 12.4%, 21.8% and 10.3% in caecum, AC and rectum, respectively. This supports the view that in swine, the diversity of GI microflora might be higher compared to other species. In terms of microflora metabolic activity, the substantially higher numerical trends seen in FOS and TOS treatments regarding total volatile fatty acid, acetate concentrations and glycolytic activities, it could be postulated that FOS and TOS promoted saccharolytic activities in the porcine colon.  相似文献

Faeces could be used for evaluating the balance of the equine hindgut microbial ecosystem, which would offer a practical method for assessing gut health and how this relates to disease. However, previous studies concluded that faeces microbial ecosystem was not representative of the proximal hindgut (caecum and ventral colon). This study aimed to evaluate if variations of the faecal microbial ecosystem were similar to those observed in the proximal hindgut. Six horses, fistulated in the caecum and right ventral (RV) colon, were subjected to a gradual change of diet, from a 100% hay (high fibre) diet (2.2 DM kg/day per 100 kg BW) to a 57% hay+43% barley (high starch) diet (0.8 DM kg/day per 100 kg BW hay and 0.6 DM kg/day per 100 kg BW barley). The two diets were iso-energetic and fed over a 3-week trial period. Samples of digesta from the caecum, RV colon and faeces were collected two times on the 10th and 20th day of the trial, for each diet to assess the microbial ecosystem parameters by both classical culture technics and biochemical methods. The variations observed in the caecal and colonic bacterial composition (increase in total anaerobic, amylolytic and lactate-utilizing and decrease in cellulolytic bacteria concentrations) and microbial activity (changes in volatile fatty acids concentrations and increase in lactate concentrations) demonstrated that the hay+barley diet caused changes in the hindgut microbial ecosystem. Similar variations were observed in the faecal microbial ecosystem. Feeding the hay+barley diet resulted in higher concentrations of faecal lipopolysaccharides. The functional bacterial group concentrations (cellulolytics, amylolytics and lactate utilizers) were significantly correlated between caecum and faeces and between colon and faeces. From analyses of the metabolites produced from microbial activity, only valerate concentration in the caecum and the proportion of propionate were significantly correlated with the same parameters in the faeces. Results of the principal component analysis performed between all the caecal/faecal and colonic/faecal parameters revealed that the total anaerobic and cellulolytic bacteria concentrations, as well as valerate, l-lactate and lipopolysaccharide concentrations were strongly correlated with several microbial parameters in the caecum (P<0.027; r>|0.45|) and in the colon (P<0.013; r>|0.50|). This demonstrated that faecal samples and their bacterial analyses could be used to represent caecum and RV colon hindgut microbial ecosystem in terms of variations during a change from a high-fibre to a high-starch diet, and thus could be markers of particular interest to diagnostic proximal hindgut microbial disturbances.  相似文献

A broiler experiment was conducted to examine the effects of sorghum particle size and milling type on the performance, nitrogen corrected apparent metabolisable energy (AMEn), digestive tract development, digesta pH, duodenal digesta particle size and digesta passage rate. Complete pelleted diets with identical botanical and chemical composition containing 750 g/kg whole sorghum (WS), sorghum ground through hammer mill with 1 mm and 3 mm screen (HM1 and HM3) and sorghum ground on a roller mill with 0.15 mm spacing (RM0.15), were made. Sorghum for diets HM3 and RM0.15 were milled to approximately the same mean particle size. Diet WS resulted in poorer (P<0.05) weight gain and feed conversion ratio (FCR) than the other diets from 11 to 21 days of age, while diet RM0.15 resulted in improved FCR. Apparent MEn determined between 25 and 28 days of age, however, was higher (P<0.05) for diet WS than for the other diets. This was possibly due to a longer adaptation time to a larger feed particle size, as indicated by a lower (P<0.05) pH in the gizzard and smaller duodenal digesta particle size for this diet. Diet HM1 gave similar performance as diet HM3, but resulted in a significantly smaller gizzard, a higher pH of the gizzard content, a lower pH of the duodenal content and larger particles in the duodenal contents, thus indicating that gizzard development and activity were compromised by this diet. Total tract passage rate of the liquid phase marker was slower (P<0.05) in the WS fed birds, but there were no differences in solid phase marker excretion rates.  相似文献

Summary The wombats Vombatus ursinus and Lasiorhinus latifrons have a capacious proximal colon with only a vestigial caecum. The pattern of microbial fermentation in the hindgut of both species was studied in captive animals fed a pelleted straw diet and in wild wombats feeding on their natural winter diets. Digesta pH was low in the stomach but near neutrality along the hindgut, indicating effective absorption and/or buffering of the colonic contents. Initial proportions and production rates of short chain fatty acids in vitro reflected the fermentation of plant cell walls. Proportions of isobutyrate, isovalerate and n-valerate increased towards the distal colon indicating proteolysis and subsequent fermentation of amino acids. The low ammonia content of digesta fluid suggested that ammonia released from these amino acids was absorbed and utilized by the wombats and their gut microbes. Wild wombats had higher concentrations and production rates of short chain fatty acids than captive animals, which was consistent with the higher apparent digestibility of their natural diet. The energy from short chain fatty acids in captive animals was 30–33% of digestible intake. Energy intakes were low and similar to resting metabolic rates estimated for marsupials. Actual resting metabolic rates of the wombats are probably lower than these estimates, and the proportion of energy derived from fermentation substantially higher than the 53–61% estimated in wild wombats. The energy from fermentation clearly enables wombats to utilize diets high in fibre.Abbreviations DEI digestible energy intake - DM dry matter - NDF neutral detergent fibre - SCFA short chain fatty acids - SD standard deviation - SMR standard metabolic rate  相似文献

The herbivorous tortoise Xerobates agassizii contents with large fluctuations in the quality and abundance of desert pastures. Responses to grass (Schismus barbatus), herbage (Sphaeralcea ambigua) and pelleted diets were studied in captive animals. Digestive anatomy was investigated in wild tortoises. Cornified esophageal epithelia and numerous mucus glands along the digestive tract indicated a resistance to abrasive diets. Gastric contents were acidic whereas hindgut digesta were near neutral pH. The colon was the primary site of fermentation with short-chain fatty acids mainly comprised of acetate (69–84%), propionate (10–15%) and n-butyrate (1–12%). Fibre digestion was extensive and equivalent to 22–64% of digestible energy intakes. Large particles of grass (25 mm Crmordants) were excreted as a pulse but retained longer than either fluids (Co-EDTA) or fine particles (2 mm; Yb). Patterns of marker excretion suggested irregular mixing of only the fluid and fine particulate digesta in the stomach and the colon. Mean retention times of Crmordants were 14.2–14.8 days on the grass and highfibre pellets. Intakes of grass were low and accompanied by smaller estimates of digesta fill than for the high-fibre pellets. Digestive capacity was large and estimated at 11–21% of body mass on these diets. The capacious but simple digestive anatomy of the tortoise may provide the greatest flexibility in utilizing a variety of forages in its unreliable habitat.Abbreviations bm body mass - DM drymatter - EDTA ethylene-diamine tetra-acetic acid - MRT mean retention time - NDF neutral detergent fibre - SCFA short-chain fatty acid(s) - T max time to maximum marker concentration  相似文献
