Phycological research in the development of the Chinese seaweed industry   总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0
Chengkui  Zeng 《Hydrobiologia》1984,116(1):7-18
The term seaweed industry is employed in a broad sense and includes production both of commercial seaweeds such as Laminaria and Porphyra by phycoculture and of processed seaweed products, such as algin, agar and carrageenan. Before the founding of the People's Republic, China had a very insignificant seaweed industry, producing small quantities of the purple laver Porphyra and the glueweed Gloiopeltis by the primitive rock-cleaning method and the kelps Laminaria and Undaria by the primitive stone-throwing method, both aiming at enhancing the growth of the wild seaweeds. Also, a small quantity of agar was manufactured by the traditional Japanese method of gelling, freezing, thawing and drying the product. The small production was not sufficient to meet the demand of the Chinese people who for ages have appreciated seaweeds and their products for food. Therefore, large quantities of seaweeds and seaweed products had to be imported from various countries, for instance, Eucheuma and Gracilaria from Indonesia and other southeastern Asian countries, Laminaria and agar from Japan, even Porphyra from the USA. Annual Laminaria import from Japan generally amounted to over 10 000 tons and in some years approached 20 000–30 000 tons. Some quantities of the glueweed Gloiopeltis and the vermifuge weed Digenea simplex were exported, mainly to Japan.Since the founding of the People's Republic of China in October, 1949, China has exerted efforts to build up a self-supporting seaweed industry. Now after a lapse of 30-some years, a sizable seaweed industry has been developed. China is now able to produce by phycoculture more than one million tons of fresh seaweeds, including Laminaria, Undaria, Porphyra, Eucheuma, Gracilaria etc. and several thousand tons of seaweed extracts, including algin, agar, carrageenan, mannitol and iodine. At present, China still imports some quantities of seaweeds and seaweed products from various countries but is able to produce sufficient quantities to meet the people's need and even to export some quantities of the seaweeds Laminaria, Undaria and Porphyra and the seaweed products algin and mannitol. At the Tenth International Seaweed Symposium, I presented a paper on the Marine Phycoculture of China, in which I emphasized on the methods of cultivation (Tseng 1981b). Therefore I would like to take this opportunity to supplement the last lecture by presenting a paper on the role of phycological research in the development of China's seaweed industry.  相似文献

Algal biotechnology industries and research activities in China   总被引:14,自引:0,他引:14
In old China there were very few people engaged in the study of the algae, but in new China, freshwater and marine algae are studied by over onehundred old and new phycologists. There is now an algal biotechnologyindustry consisting of an aquaculture industry, producing large amounts ofthe seaweeds Laminaria, Porphyra, Undaria, Gracilaria, eucheumoids, and the microalgae Dunaliella and Spirulina. There is also a phycocolloid industry, producing algin, agar andcarrageenan; an industry producing chemicals and drugs, such as iodine, mannitol, phycocyanin, -carotene, PSS (propylene glycol alginatesulfate) and FPS (fucose-containing sulfated polysaccharides) and anindustry producing food, feed and fertilizer. The Laminariacultivation industry produces about 900,000 t dry Laminaria, probably the largest producer in the world and 13,000 t algin, undoubtedly one of the largest algin producer in the world.  相似文献

The breeding population of the sandwich tern (Sterna sandvicensis) on the German North Sea coast has undergone substantial fluctuations throughout the last 100 years. Numbers of breeding birds were fluctuating quite strongly in the first 30 years of the twentieth century. From 1930 to the mid-1950s, a relatively steady decrease occurred. A minimum was reached in 1965 with 2,243 pairs. Around 1970, numbers increased quite markedly up to the mid-1990s and reached a centurial maximum with 10,138 pairs in 1996. Most recently, the numbers have dropped to only 5,681 pairs in 2005, the lowest number over the last 30 years. Some colonies have existed over long periods, others only for short periods, with often substantial and sudden changes. The distribution at sea was studied by transect counts from ships. During the reproductive period, high totals were found between the mainland coast and the islands, up to 30 km from the outer coast/island line. The seaward extent of the sandwich tern distribution coincided quite well with the 20-m depth line. Maximum foraging ranges for single colonies were estimated to be ca. 45 km for Trischen, ca. 35 km for Norderoog and ca. 30 km for both Scharh?rn/Nigeh?rn and Juist. Overall flight ranges for all colonies were estimated at 33.8 km for 95% of the birds. Germany has a high international responsibility for the protection of this species. Only a few colonies exist every year, making this species very vulnerable to anthropogenic disturbance, pollution events and fishing activities.

The commercial exploitation of seaweeds for use as food and for the production of agar, alginate and carrageenan is outlined. The quantities of seaweed harvested for each purpose are tabulated and discussed. Seaweeds for food are derived chiefly from China, Japan and Korea, with almost 94% obtained by cultivation. Alginophytes are collected in 15 countries but six of these account for more than 80% of the total harvest; all are from natural stocks except for a large quantity of Laminaria cultivated in China. Natural carrageenophytes, from 12 countries, now account for only 20% of the total harvest; the remainder is cultivated Eucheuma species, 99% of which is produced in only two countries, the Philippines and Indonesia. Of the four categories of commercial resources of seaweeds considered, agarophytes are spread more evenly over a greater number of countries; they come from 20 countries and only five of these are minor contributors to the total. Gelidium species are particularly important because of the high quality agar they yield; their distribution and location are discussed.  相似文献

This work brings together the scattered information on marine plant harvests and the colloid extraction industry in Portugal, as an initial contribution to the improvement of resource management. The first phase of exploitation of marine plant resources started prior to the 14th century, with the gathering and sale of storm-tossed seaweeds for fertilizer. The harvest of seagrasses and algae at Ria de Aveiro was of great economic importance. The second phase of resource exploitation began with the wider scale harvest of agarophyte species for colloid extraction. Portugal is at present the third largest harvester of the agarophytes Gelidium and Pterocladia (2500 t annually), and it is the fifth largest agar producer (350 t annually). Other colloid-producing species, including Chondrus crispus and Mastocarpus stellatus, are also harvested for export. The total agarophyte landings, agar production and income from agar exports is far below the maximum levels attained in the early 1970s. The status of stocks in each different harvest zone on the continental coast and the Azores is examined. Although there is an effective management structure for the Portuguese marine plant resource, research is needed to provide a sound biological basis for management. author for correspondence  相似文献

Iron propagation cages were settled on sand and/or rock beds in coastal areas of Hokkaido. The cage was oxidized by dissolved oxygen and the released Fe(II) diffused into the seawater around the cage. Fe(II) concentrations in the range of 10–50 nM were detected within a 20-m distance around the cage. For comparison, in the Japan Sea, the total iron concentration is less than 2 nM.Laminaria japonica was grown in an indoor semi-continuous culture system. The critical Fe level for maintaining maximum growth, and the subsistence Fe level for survival were measured. The concentrations obtained were 14–21 and 8 g Fe g–1 tissue, respectively. Iron found inL. japonica growing on rocks and/or rock beds in the Japan Sea was close to the subsistence level. However, the Fe level inL. japonica on the cage in the Japan Sea was considerably higher. The concentrations of chlorophyll-a and fucoxanthin collected from the cage were significantly higher for sporophytes, demonstrating that iron is a very important element for the growth of seaweeds.  相似文献

In this first attempt to survey the Brazilian sponge-dwelling fishes we present a list of collected fishes, with notes on their distribution, abundance and habitat preferences. Risor ruber, an obligate sponge-dwelling goby, and Scorpaenodes tredecimspinosus, never before collected in association with sponges, are recorded for the first time in the western South Atlantic based on collections made in localities on the northeastern Brazilian coast. Previous work on Risor ruber indicated that it preferred massive sponges, but in our study the majority of the specimens were found in the lumen of tubular sponges, Aplysina lacunosa, together with other fishes and invertebrates, mostly crustaceans. Elacatinus figaro, originally described as a cleaner goby, is also a sponge-dweller that occurs in waters much deeper than previously thought. The sponge community off northeastern Brazil represents the only shelter for several species of fishes in a desert of rubble and flat rocky bottoms, perhaps functioning as habitat oases. We also found four Brazilian endemic species of fishes associated with sponges in depths greater than 50m, which contradicts a previous hypothesis suggesting that endemic fishes in Brazilian coastal waters are restricted to depths less than 50m.  相似文献

Twenty-seven species of common seaweeds from the coast of Korea havebeen screened for antifouling activity. The seaweed extracts were tested inlaboratory assays against the marine fouling green alga Enteromorphaprolifera and the blue mussel Mytilus edulis. Tissue growth, sporesettlement, zygote formation and germlings of the E. prolifera wereinhibited by methanol extracts of the seaweed Ishige sinicola (= I. foliacea) and Sargassum horneri. Spore settlement was stronglyinhibited by using extract concentrations as low as 30 g mL-1with I. sinicola and 120 g mL-1 with S. horneri. The repulsive activity of the foot of the mussel was completely inhibited bymethanol extracts of I. sinicola and Scytosiphon lomentaria atconcentrations of 40 g per 10 L drop supplied to eachmussel. These extracts also showed strong antifouling activities onlarval settlement with, respectively, no or only 6% of the spat settlingwhen a test concentration of 0.8 mg mL-1 was used. This work isthe first stage towards the development of novel antifouling agents frommarine macroalgae.  相似文献

Chile is an important producer of brown seaweeds representing 10% of world supply. Landings of Chilean kelp fluctuated between 40,000 t.year−1 in the early ‘80s to 250,000 t.year−1 more recently. Commercialized algae come from natural populations and no mass-cultures of involved species have been established. Four species of brown algae are commercially collected in the country: Lessonia trabeculata, L. nigrescens, Macrocystis pyrifera and M. integrifolia. Since 2000, the demand of alginate sources and food for cultivated abalones dramatically raised the harvesting of these species. Direct evaluations of Lessonia spp. and Macrocystis standing-stocks were made along 700 km of coast in northern Chile. Lessonia spp. estimated populations exceed 900,000 t, whereas M. integrifolia does not exceed 300 t. The insights provided indicate that sustainability of Chilean kelp subjected to intense harvesting would require management programs including the following bio-ecological recommendations: (1) to harvest the entire plant including the holdfast; (2) to harvest plants larger than 20 cm in diameter; (3) to harvest plants sparsely, selecting mayor specimens; (4) rotation of harvesting areas; and (5) for Macrocystis, to cut the canopy 1–2 m from the surface. They must be implemented in a National Program of Kelp Management, elaborated by government, scientists, fisherman, and industry.  相似文献

Porphyra vietnamensis Tanaka & Pham-Hoang Ho (Bangiales, Rhodophyta) is a tropical seaweed collected from the west coast of India. Thalli of the blade phase are found growing only during the rainy season between July and September. They grow on rocky intertidal or subtidal substrata or as epiphytes on other seaweeds such as Enteromorpha flexuosa and Chaetomorpha media. The gametophytic thallus is monostromatic and covered with spines at the base. The species is monoecious. Male gametangia are found in patches that are distributed in the upper part of the thallus. Archeospores are found at the thallus margins and give rise to the blade phase after one week of germination even at 30 C. Zygotospores germinated at 25 C into conchocelis within three days from the date of their inoculation. Conchospores were released at 30 C. The young blades grew at 32 C in the laboratory.  相似文献

The opportunistic Candida albicans yeast strain ATCC 10261 grows at 37 °C and gives germ tubes after 3 h on corn meal agar and blood plasma. It produces chlamydospores and assimilates sucrose, dextrose, galactose, maltose, trehalose and xylose among the tested carbon sources. Other growth characters were also investigated. The agar diffusion cut plug technique revealed that 200 l of Foeniculum vulgare Miller (fennel), Mentha piperita L. (peppermint) and Citrus limon (lemon) essential oils showed inhibitory actions. Fumigation test of the three essential oils had complete inhibition on the growth. The essential oil of Eucalyptus occidentalis End1 (eucalyptus, eucalypt) had no influence on C. albicans growth by the two tests. Meanwhile, methanol extracts of both leaves and male cones of the conifer Thuja orientalis (eastern thuya) had an inhibitory influence on the growth by two tests (cut plug and filter paper disc assay). In comparative tests the antibiotics mycostatin and dermatin had an inhibitory activity on C. albicans at the concentrations of 50–80 g per hole. Crude methanol extract of leaves of eastern thuya (10–80 g/ml) reduced C. albicans growth and intercellular protein nitrogen on liquid media.  相似文献

Hydrogen was produced from various marine macro-algae (seaweeds) through anaerobic fermentation using an undefined bacterial consortium. In this study, anaerobic fermentation from various marine macro-algae for Ulva lactuca, Porphyra tenera, Undaria pinnatifida, and Laminaria japonica was studied. From this analysis Laminaria japorica was determined to be the optimum substrate for hydrogen production. When L. japornica was used as the carbon source for enhanced hydrogen production, the optimum fermentation temperature, substrate concentration, initial pH, and pretreatment condition were determined to be 35°C, 5%, 7.5, and BT120 (Ball mill and thermal treatments at 120°C for 30 min), respectively. In addition, hydrogen production was improved when the sludge was heat-treated at 65°C for 20 min. Under these conditions, about 4,164 mL of hydrogen was produced from 50 g/L of dry algae (L. japonica) for 50 h, with a hydrogen concentration around 34.4%. And the maximum hydrogen production rate and yield were found to be 70 mL/L·h and 28 mL/g dry algae, respectively.  相似文献

The red seaweeds Gelidiella acerosa and Gracilaria mammillaris growing along the coast of Venezuela were investigated as potential economic sources of agar. Agar extracted from Gracilaria mammillaris accounted for 27% of the algal dry weight but had quite a poor gelling ability because of the presence of alkali-stable sulphate groups on the D-galactose residue. However, the gel strength of its aqueous solutions was considerably enhanced by the addition of potassium, sodium and calcium ions (up to 1N). On the contrary, the galactan from Gelidiella acerosa (yield of about 20% w/w) exhibited quite good properties. In particular, the gel strength was comparable to that of commercial agaroses. Sulphate esters were not detectable by chemical methods and NMR spectroscopy revealed an agarose backbone with a high degree of methylation on both D and L-galactose residues.  相似文献

During the last decade brown seaweeds attracted much attention as a source of polysaccharides, namely laminarans, alginic acids, and sulfated polysaccharides—fucoidans, with various structures and biological activities. In this study, sulfated polysaccharides were isolated from brown seaweeds Saccharina japonica (formerly named Laminaria) and Undaria pinnatifida and their antitumor activity was tested against human breast cancer T-47D and melanoma SK-MEL-28 cell lines. The sulfated polysaccharide form S. japonica was highly branched partially acetylated sulfated galactofucan, built up of (1→3)-α-l-fucose residues. The sulfated polysaccharide from U. pinnatifida was partially acetylated highly sulfated galactofucan consisting of (1→3)- or (1→3);(1→4)-α-l-fucose residues.Fucoidans from S. japonica and U. pinnatifida distinctly inhibited proliferation and colony formation in both breast cancer and melanoma cell lines in a dose-dependent manner. These results indicated that the use of sulfated polysaccharides from brown seaweeds S. japonica and U. pinnatifida might be a potential approach for cancer treatment.  相似文献

The first report of Caulerpa taxifolia in the Mediterranean is from 1984. The alga was found on the rocky shore at Monaco, below the Oceanographic Museum, where it had been on display in tropical aquaria. Within five years, there was an abundance of C. taxifolia on the shores around the first point of observation. In 1987, C. taxifolia appeared on the French coast, 3 km east of Monaco, at Cap Martin. By late 1991, 30 ha of shore in the vicinity of Monaco was covered with the alga. New points of colonization were in Livorno, Italy, 240 km east of Monaco, and to the west at Agay, Le Lavandou, Hyères, Toulon, Les Lecques, Saint Cyprien, 50 to 370 km from Monaco. The westernmost point of colonization, noted in September 1992, was 600 km from Monaco, at Majorca (Balearic island, Spain). Most types of substrata, between 0 and 50 m depth, are susceptible to colonization by C. taxifolia. Seaweed and seagrass populations on the coasts of Monaco and Cap Martin have been significantly reduced or destroyed because of invasion by C. taxifolia.  相似文献

Xylose or glucose (5 g/l) was utilized simultaneously with benzoate (5 g/l) byRhodosporidium toruloides andRhodotorula rubra in batch culture. At a higher glucose concentration, benzoate was utilized only after glucose was depleted from the media. Both yeasts preferentially utilized benzoate before xylose even if there were more than 5 g xylose/l.Rhodotorula glutinis preferentially utilized glucose (10 g/l) before benzoate but utilized xylose and benzoate simultaneously. The authors are with the Department of Biochemical Technology, Faculty of Chemistry, Slovak Technical University, Radlinského 9, 812 37 Bratislava, Slovak Republic  相似文献

Ungava Bay is ice covered 6–7 months of the year and evidence of ice scouring of seaweeds is extensive in the intertidal and shallow subtidal. Maximum tidal amplitudes of 16 m, among the highest in Canadian waters, compound this impact. Despite this level of annual perturbation, very extensive and dense beds of fucoids in the intertidal and laminarians in the subtidal are common on the western shores of Ungava Bay. Ground surveys of 24 intertidal stations combined with satellite images delineated 82,000 tons standing crop of Fucus vesiculosus and Fucus evanescens in Payne Bay, of which 36,000 tons were considered harvestable. Subtidally, kelp cover reached peak biomass at 5–10 m consisting of three primary species, Saccharina longicruris, Laminaria digitata, and Laminaria solidungula. In the area of Payne Bay, kelp beds of 100 ha were common, averaging 9–12 kg m−2 wet weight. The productivity of brown algae at these latitudes has been assumed to be low relative to southern latitudes. Direct measurement of lineal growth indicates productivity is intermediate between arctic and temperate populations. The potential for medium level industrial harvest exists under conservative management strategies within the constraints of subarctic logistics.  相似文献

The nearshore (less than 20m depth) demersal fish community in Prince William Sound, Alaska, is dominated by Pacific cod, Gadus macrocephalus, pricklebacks (mostly Arctic shanny Stichaeus punctatus), gunnels (mostly crescent gunnels Pholis laeta), a variety of greenlings (Hexagrammidae) and sculpins (Cottidae). During summer, the spatial distribution of fishes, over scales of 100's of m to 10's of km, varied by habitats characterized by different vegetation types. Juvenile Pacific cod and greenlings were numerically dominant in eelgrass, Zostera marina, beds. Pricklebacks and sculpins were dominant in areas with an understory of the kelps Agarum cribrosum and Laminaria saccharina. Greenlings and sculpins were the most abundant demersal fishes in more exposed sites with a canopy of Nereocystis luetkeana and an understory of L. bongardiana. Measured habitat variables, including vegetation type, slope, vegetation biomass, and substratum type, explained a significant proportion of the variation in the presence or absence of most fishes. The relative importance of different habitat characteristics varied between taxonomic groups of fishes. Vegetation type explained a significant proportion of variation for cod, rockfishes, and ronquils. Juvenile cod were closely associated with eelgrass, while rockfish and ronquils were associated with kelps. Pricklebacks and rockfishes were more frequently observed on steeply sloped shorelines, while ronquils were more often found at sites with higher biomass of vegetation. Within A. cribrosum habitats, more greenlings and sculpins were present at sites where algal biomass was higher. Also, sculpins were more abundant in deeper water and gunnels were more abundant in shallow water within this habitat. These associations may not have been causative. However, evidence suggests that some differences between fish communities in eelgrass and Agarum beds may have been causally related to vegetation characteristics. The possible roles of different vegetation types as refugia from predators or as sources of prey are discussed.  相似文献

Coastal structures are constructed principally to protect the coast line. However, these structures also can act as artificial substrata for seaweeds. In particular, armor blocks, such as tetrapods, prove to be good algal substrata. Our field observations on the vegetation and standing crop of seaweed communities on armor blocks led us to the following conclusions: 1) Ecklonia cavacommunities grew on tetrapods that had been placed to coincide with the maturation period of E. cava. The communities have been maintained for more than four years. 2) The standing crop of seaweeds on an offshore breakwater composed of tetrapods placed seven years before was almost the same as that found under natural conditions. 3) Variations in roughened surfaces (pebbles or scores and grooves 3 or 46 mm wide) did not affect the growth of Sargassum spp. However, a greater number of Ecklonia stolonifera plants were observed attached to roughened surfaces compared to smooth surfaces.  相似文献

Hypnea musciformis, a source of-carrageenan, is abundant along the coast ofBrazil. Although the species has been exploitedsporadically on the north-east coast, this has beendone in the absence of data on seasonal fluctuationsin stock and on management of the natural beds. Thispaper evaluates the stock of a population from theUbatuba Bay, S-E Brazilian Coast, and how thepopulation recovers from monthly harvests. Dry monthlyyield ranged from 4.9 to 201.2 g m-2 and showedno obvious seasonal pattern. The mean recovery rateafter harvesting is estimated as 35 days, and thestanding stock in the Bay (1.5 km) is approximately3.68 t y-1 dry wt.  相似文献
