Elephants living in dense woodlands are difficult to count. Many elephant populations in Africa occur in such conditions. Estimates of these populations based on total counts, aerial counts and dung counts often lack information on precision and accuracy. We use standard mark–recapture field methods to obtain estimates of population size with associated confidence limits. We apply this approach to a closed elephant population in the Tembe Elephant Park (300 km2), South Africa. A registration count completed in 4 months gives a known population size. We evaluate mark–recapture models against the known population size. Individual identification profiles obtained for elephants during the registration count and mark–recapture events indicate that at least 167 elephants live in the park. We consider this value as an estimate of the minimum number alive. We include 189 sightings of bulls and 37 sightings of breeding herds in the mark–recapture modelling. Of the models we test (Petersen, Schnabel, Schumacher, Jolly–Seber, Bowden's, Poisson and negative binomial), Bowden's gives an estimate closest to the registration count. Assumptions of the model are not violated. For all models except one (negative binomial), our estimates improve with increased sampling intensity. Confidence intervals do not improve with increased effort except for the Schnabel model. Mark–recapture methods should be considered as reliable estimators of population size for elephants occurring in dense woodlands and forests when other methods cannot be relied on.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. The grasshopper species Chorthippus brunneus and C. jacobsi form a complex mosaic hybrid zone in northern Spain. Two mark–release–recapture studies were carried out near the centre of the zone in order to make direct estimates of lifetime dispersal.
2. A model framework based on a simple random walk in homogeneous habitat was extended to include the estimation of philopatry and flying propensity. Each model was compared with the real data, correcting for spatial and temporal biases in the data sets.
3. All four data sets (males and females at each site) deviated significantly from a random walk. Three of the data sets showed strong philopatry and three had a long dispersal tail, indicating a low propensity to move further than predicted by the random walk model.
4. Neighbourhood size estimates were 76 and 227 for the two sites. These estimates may underestimate effective population size, which could be increased by the long tail to the dispersal function. The random walk model overestimates lifetime dispersal and hence the minimum spatial scale of adaptation.
5. Best estimates of lifetime dispersal distance of 7–33 m per generation were considerably lower than a previous indirect estimate of 1344 m per generation. This discrepancy could be influenced by prezygotic isolation, an inherent by-product of mosaic hybrid zone structure.  相似文献

1.  Social network analyses tend to focus on human interactions. However, there is a burgeoning interest in applying graph theory to ecological data from animal populations. Here we show how radio-tracking and capture–mark–recapture data collated from wild rodent populations can be used to generate contact networks.
2.  Both radio-tracking and capture–mark–recapture were undertaken simultaneously. Contact networks were derived and the following statistics estimated: mean-contact rate, edge distribution, connectance and centrality.
3.  Capture–mark–recapture networks produced more informative and complete networks when the rodent density was high and radio-tracking produced more informative networks when the density was low. Different data collection methods provide more data when certain ecological characteristics of the population prevail.
4.  Both sets of data produced networks with comparable edge (contact) distributions that were best described by a negative binomial distribution. Connectance and closeness were statistically different between the two data sets. Only betweenness was comparable. The differences between the networks have important consequences for the transmission of infectious diseases. Care should be taken when extrapolating social networks to transmission networks for inferring disease dynamics.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. A mark–recapture study was conducted on the American Apollo butterfly Parnassius clodius Menetries during three field seasons (1998–2000) to examine its movement patterns over the course of a season within a sagebrush meadow in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming, U.S.A. The study examined how resources affected butterfly distribution patterns and used mark–recapture data to gain insight into movement differences between sexes and over time.
2. The average straight-line movement of P. clodius was 202 m day−1, adjusted for sampling effort at different distances. Movement estimates in all 3 years were highly correlated with the average distance between plots sampled.
3. Butterfly abundance was correlated positively with per cent cover of its host plant Dicentra uniflora , but this relationship decreased in importance during the peak of the flight period when individuals may be more interested in finding mates. There was a weak, positive correlation between butterfly abundance and the abundance of its primary nectar source, Eriogonum umbellatum in 1999, but no relationship in 2000.
4. Survival, recapture, and transition probabilities were estimated using open population, capture–recapture models. Survival and recapture probability decreased over the course of each season, while the probability of moving between plots increased. Recapture probability was significantly lower for females than for males among all 3 years, but there was no difference between the sexes in survival rate.  相似文献

Abstract.  Pradel model mark–release–recapture estimates of survivorship, φ , recruitment, f , and the rate of density-independent population growth, λ , are presented for eight mark–recapture studies of the screwworm Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) from Costa Rica, totalling 19 573 released and 4476 recaptured flies. Corroborative estimates of survivorship and the rate of population growth based on an extensive review of the literature are also reported. Weighted-mean ± standard error of the mean (SEM) mark–release–recapture estimates of survivorship, recruitment and the rate of population growth were φ   =  0.798 ± 0.008, f   = 0.193 ± 0.008 and λ  = 1.005 ± 0.002, respectively. Population doubling time was estimated from λ at 139 days. Estimates of φ and λ from the literature both exceeded those calculated by mark–recapture methods and estimates of population doubling times were consequently shorter.  相似文献

1. Forager population size of two species of mound-building, subterranean termite ( Coptotermes lacteus , Rhinotermitidae and Nasutitermes exitiosus , Termitidae) was estimated using three mark–recapture protocols. These estimates varied widely within and between colonies (≈ 0.3–200 million for C. lacteus and 0.2–3 million for N. exitiosus ). The variation in the estimates is explained in part by violation of the assumptions of the protocols.
2. The fat-stain markers, although persistent in the laboratory, faded rapidly in the field, and were transferable from marked individuals to unmarked individuals by cannibalism.
3. Marked individuals did not mix randomly or evenly with unmarked foraging individuals in space or time, as marked individuals were recaptured in widely varying numbers at different feeding sites sampled simultaneously. Importantly, foragers displayed feeding site fidelity and avoided disturbed feeding sites.
4. The likelihood of recapture differed between castes and instars; there was a higher recapture rate of large workers and soldiers relative to smaller workers.
5. The mark–recapture protocols provided inaccurate and unreliable forager population estimates, up to two orders of magnitude larger than direct counts of entire mound colonies. Thus the weighted mean estimates from more complex triple-mark–recapture protocols were not necessarily better than Lincoln index estimates from simpler single-mark–recapture protocols.
6. Mark–recapture studies may provide useful information about forager behaviour and foraging territories.  相似文献

Abstract 1. Migration into local populations may increase the likelihood of persistence but emigration may decrease the persistence of small and isolated populations. The dispersal behaviour of a day-flying moth Zygaena filipendulae was examined to determine whether emigration is correlated positively or negatively with population size and host plant density.
2. A mark–release–recapture study showed that most moths moved small distances (< 40 m on average) and only 6% of movements were > 100 m.
3. Twenty-five individuals moved between populations, a measured exchange rate of 8%. Moths were more likely to move between patches that were close together and they moved to relatively large patches.
4. The fraction of residents increased with increasing population size in the patch and increasing host plant cover. Relatively high proportions of individuals left small patches with small moth populations.
5. Moths released in grassland lacking Lotus corniculatus (the host plant) tended to leave the area and biased their movement towards host plant areas, whereas those released within an area containing L. corniculatus tended to stay in that area.
6. Biased movement away from small populations and areas of low host plant density (normally with low population density) was found. This migration-mediated Allee effect is likely to decrease patch occupancy in metapopulations, the opposite of the rescue effect. The effects on metapopulation persistence are not known.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. A linear relationship between mean movement distances recorded and the size of the study area was found in a comparison of five mark–release–recapture studies of the meadow brown butterfly.
2. The scale impact on mean butterfly movement distances was also apparent when comparing the results for different butterfly species reported in 21 mark–release–recapture studies.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Caves are often assumed to be predator-free environments for cave fishes. This has been proposed to be a potential benefit of colonising these otherwise harsh environments. In order to test this hypothesis, the predator–prey interaction of a belostomatid (predator) and a cave fish (prey) occurring in the Cueva del Azufre (Tabasco, Mexico) was investigated with two separate experiments.
2. In one experiment, individual Belostoma were given a chance to prey on a cave fish, the cave form of the Atlantic molly ( Poecilia mexicana ), to estimate feeding rates and size-specific prey preferences of the predator. In the other experiment, population density of Belostoma was estimated using a mark–recapture analysis in one of the cave chambers.
3. Belostomatids were found to heavily prey on cave mollies and to exhibit a prey preference for large fish. The mark–recapture analysis revealed a high population density of the heteropterans in the cave.
4. The absence of predators in caves is not a general habitat feature for cave fishes. None the less predation regimes differ strikingly between epigean and hypogean habitats. The prey preference of Belostoma indicates that cave-dwelling P. mexicana experience size-specific predation pressure comparable with surface populations, which may have implications for life-history evolution in this cave fish.  相似文献

1. Three independent methods were used to investigate population structure in the butterfly Plebejus argus . First, migration and dispersal ability were measured by mark–release–recapture in seven adjacent habitat patches, and by release of butterflies in unoccupied habitat. Secondly, colonization of newly created habitat was observed over 7 years. Finally, genetic differentiation of local populations within a metapopulation was investigated. Sampled local populations included parts of the mark–release–recapture study area.
2. Plebejus argus is relatively sedentary: the maximum movement detected was 395 m, and only 2% of individuals moved further than 100 m between recaptures on different days. None the less, adjacent local populations in the mark–release–recapture study area were linked by occasional migration, with ≈ 1.4% of individuals moving between patches separated by 13–200 m.
3. Despite low mobility, observed colonizations occurred rapidly over distances of 1 km. Because P. argus occurs at high population densities, 1.4% migration can generate enough migrants to colonize newly suitable habitat quickly at this spatial scale.
4. Mark–release–recapture data were used to predict that there would be limited genetic differentiation through drift between local populations at this spatial scale. The prediction was supported by allele frequency data for the same local populations.
5. Genetic differentiation often indicates higher levels of migration than are revealed by the movements of marked individuals. This study shows that when experimental releases and extensive marking are undertaken in areas that are large relative to most movements, indirect measures of gene flow and direct measures of dispersal can concur.
6. Evidence from the three different approaches was complementary, indicating that P. argus occurs as metapopulations within the study area.  相似文献

1.  Capture–mark–recapture data were used to describe the process of recovery from a typical badger removal operation (BRO) at North Nibley, Gloucestershire, UK, which was carried out as part of the government's strategy to control bovine tuberculosis. Data on biometrics, demographics and movement from this low-density disturbed population were compared with those of two nearby high-density undisturbed populations (Wytham Woods and Woodchester Park, UK) in order to study fundamental principles of population dynamics and density-dependence.
2.  Badgers moved more between social groups at North Nibley than in the other study areas, particularly in the immediate aftermath of the removal operation.
3.  Recolonization of the vacated habitat occurred in the first instance by young females.
4.  Although in the first year after the BRO no cubs had been reared in any of the culled groups, and although the shortage of sexually mature boars may have limited the reproductive output of sows in the following year, the population took only 3 years to recover to its (already lowered) preremoval density.
5.  Losses from the adult (and cub) population due to mortality or emigration were smaller at North Nibley than at the other sites.
6.  There was much evidence that during 1995 and 1996 density-dependent effects constrained the reproductive output of the high-density populations, and some support for the hypothesis that badgers exhibit the non-linear 'large mammal' type of functional response to density.
7.  Badgers at North Nibley were younger, heavier and in better condition than badgers at Wytham Woods and Woodchester Park.
8.  We argue that the disease dynamics are likely to be different in disturbed compared with undisturbed badger populations, and that this could affect the effectiveness of BROs.  相似文献

Hydroacoustic counting and a three-year mark–recapture study with passive integrated transponders (PIT tags) were used to estimate the size of a spawning population of nase Chondrostoma nasus , a threatened potamodromous cyprinid that undertakes annual spawning migrations into a tributary of the Danube River. In 2005, the estimates of the size of the spawning population from the hydroacoustic counts ( N = 2234, 95% CL 1929–2538) and from the Jolly–Seber model ( N = 1198, 95% CL 461–5842) corresponded well. Estimates from the jackknife-estimator based on the hydroacoustic counts yielded slightly higher values ( N = 2783, 95% CL 2529–3037), but were still in the same order of magnitude as those from the hydroacoustic and mark–recapture approach. At low run-size, hydroacoustic counting was more time consuming and technically demanding than mark–recapture studies. At the same time, it was non-invasive, provided real-time data on a fine temporal scale, and estimates showed less variability than the Jolly–Seber model. Mark–recapture of fish in spawning streams involved substantial disturbance at a sensitive stage of the life cycle. Hence, hydroacoustics is highly suited for population estimates of threatened potamodromous fishes, where interference needs to be minimized.  相似文献

Globally, there is concern over the decline of bees, an ecologically important group of pollinating insects. Genetic studies provide insights into population structure that are crucial for conservation management but that would be impossible to obtain by conventional ecological methods. Yet conservation genetic studies of bees have primarily focussed on social species rather than the more species‐rich solitary bees. Here, we investigate the population structure of Colletes floralis, a rare and threatened solitary mining bee, in Ireland and Scotland using nine microsatellite loci. Genetic diversity was surprisingly as high in Scottish (Hebridean island) populations at the extreme northwestern edge of the species range as in mainland Irish populations further south. Extremely high genetic differentiation among populations was detected; multilocus FST was up to 0.53, and and Dest were even higher (maximum: 0.85 and 1.00, respectively). A pattern of isolation by distance was evident for sites separated by land. Water appears to act as a substantial barrier to gene flow yet sites separated by sea did not exhibit isolation by distance. C. floralis populations are extremely isolated and probably not in regional migration‐drift equilibrium. GIS‐based landscape genetic analysis reveals urban areas as a potential and substantial barrier to gene flow. Our results highlight the need for urgent site‐specific management action to halt the decline of this and potentially other rare solitary bees.  相似文献

Andrena hattorfiana is a rare solitary bee which has declined during the last decades throughout western Europe. It is specialised to forage pollen from plants of the family Dipsacaceae. Knowledge of distribution, dispersal propensity, and local population sizes is essential for successful conservation of A. hattorfiana. The investigated local bee populations (n = 78) were dominated by small local populations and 60% were smaller than 10 female individuals and 80% were smaller than 50 female individuals. The area of the median occupied habitat patch was 1.25 hectare and harboured 7 female bees. Mark-release-recapture studies of female A. hattorfiana revealed a sedentary behaviour. Among pollen-foraging female bees the average registered distance moved was 46 m. The patch emigration rate was about 2%, with an observed maximum colonization distance of 900 m. Only 10% of the individuals crossed areas without the pollen plant within grassland patches, such as unpaved roads, stone walls and small tree-stands, even if these areas were less than 10 m wide. This study shows that solitary bees can occur in local populations of extremely small size and they have a sedentary behaviour. These are features that usually increase the risk of local population extinction.  相似文献

Sex-based differences in dispersal distances can affect critical population parameters such as inbreeding rates and the spatial scale of local adaptation. Males tend to disperse further than females in mammals, whereas the reverse is true for birds; too few reptiles have been studied to reveal generalities for that group. Although reptiles are most diverse and abundant in the tropics, few tropical reptiles have been studied in this respect. We combine data from a long-term (10-year) mark–recapture study with genetic information (based on nine microsatellite markers) on slatey-grey snakes ( Stegonotus cucullatus , Colubridae) in the Australian wet-dry tropics. Males attain larger body sizes than females, and both genetic and mark–recapture data show that males also disperse further than females. Recapture records show that hatchling males dispersed away from their release points whereas hatchling females did not, and adult males moved further than adult females. In the genetic analysis, males contributed less to overall F ST and relatedness than did females ( F STm = 0.0025, F STf = 0.0275, P  < 0.001; r m = 0.0053; r f = 0.0550; P  < 0.001). Spatial autocorrelation analyses within the largest population revealed a similar pattern, with spatial structuring stronger for females than males. Overall, our genetic analyses not only supported the mark–recapture data, but also extended our insights by revealing occasional long-distance dispersal not detected by the mark–recapture study.  相似文献

Abstract. 1.  Movement patterns of two butterfly species (meadow brown Maniola jurtina L. and scarce copper Lycaenae virgaureae L.) were studied in a 172 ha area within a landscape with a high percentage of suitable habitats for mark–release–recapture experiments.
2.  Adult resource density, but not patch size or larval food plant abundance, influenced the numbers and the fractions of residents, emigrants, and immigrants.
3.  Differences between species were observed in movement frequency and maximum distances moved but not in mean distances moved.
4.  The scarce copper showed much greater movement ability than expected from the results of published studies. This is believed to be a result of the comparatively large size of the study area and the high cover of suitable habitat (>50%).
5.  The mean and maximum distances travelled by butterflies reflected differences in the size of the study area.  相似文献

1. The harbour seal population Phoca vitulina in the entire Wadden Sea was severely depleted due to a virus-epizootic during 1988. A comprehensive study on the population biology and activity patterns was subsequently initiated to design a management and conservation plan. The main objective of this study was to estimate harbour seal abundance in the different regions of the Wadden Sea.
2. We investigated the potential of a mark–recapture experiment using VHF radio-tags in combination with repeated aerial surveys to estimate the number of harbour seals in the Dutch part of the Wadden Sea. The number of harbour seals hauled-out and the presence of any radio-tagged seals was monitored during seven aerial surveys of all known haul-out sites in the Dutch Wadden Sea over the 1994 breeding season.
3. A maximum likelihood (ML) estimator was developed to infer the rate of tag-loss and the size of the local prepupping population.
4. The ML estimate of the number of harbour seals in the Dutch Wadden Sea was 1536 (95% confidence limits were 1225 and 2200). The corresponding maximum proportion of seals hauled-out was 68%.
5. The use of VHF radio-tags which can be monitored from the air provides a way of correcting aerial survey counts for the proportion of harbour seals hauled-out during the surveys. Since haul-out behaviour may be influenced by local conditions, such as exposure time of sand banks, we recommend this technique be repeated in other areas of the Wadden Sea rather than using the estimates from the current study in other areas.  相似文献

Abstract Interspecific competition for a limited resource can result in the reduction of survival, growth and/or reproduction in one of the species involved. The introduced honey bee (Apis mellifera Linnaeus) is an example of a species that can compete with native bees for floral resources. Often, research into honey bee/native bee competition has focused on floral resource overlap, visitation rates or resource harvesting, and any negative interaction has been interpreted as a negative impact. Although this research can be valuable in indicating the potential for competition between honey bees and native bees, to determine if the long‐term survival of a native bee species is threatened, fecundity, survival or population density needs to be assessed. The present review evaluates research that has investigated all these measurements of honey bee/native bee competition and finds that many studies have problems with sample size, confounding factors or data interpretation. Guidelines for future research include increasing replication and using long‐term studies to investigate the impact of both commercial and feral honey bees.  相似文献

We examined the effects of Nosema bombi (Microsporidia: Nosematidae) on colonies of bumble bees, Bombus occidentalis Greene (Hymenoptera: Apidae), used to pollinate tomatoes in commercial greenhouses. We assessed methods of detecting N. bombi and tested the effectiveness of fumagillin to control this parasite. N. bombi did not affect adult population size or amount of brood in B. occidentalis colonies. Fumagillin was not effective against N. bombi at the doses we tested, and frass samples did not provide accurate estimates of the intensity of N. bombi infections. The number of N. bombi spores per bee was highly variable among bumble bees within colonies, and accurate estimates could only be obtained by sampling a large proportion of bees in each colony. Therefore, whole bee and frass sampling is useful for determining if N. bombi is present or absent, but not for obtaining accurate estimates of the intensity of N. bombi infections.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Foraging patterns were studied using honey bees on artificial flower patches to determine if given individuals could change behaviours under differing conditions.
2. Two types of flower patches were used; those simulating a population of flowers, dimorphic for colour, and grids simulating a single colour-dimorphic inflorescence.
3. In the simulated population of flowers bees were individually constant to colour over a range of reward volumes and flower patch sizes.
4. Each bee remained individually constant to a flower morph when visiting a population-type grid but changed to random visitation on the simulated inflorescence.
5. On the simulated inflorescence, with morphs providing unequal qualities of reward, most bees foraged on the higher molarity morph.
6. Most, but not all bees, failed to minimize uncertainty on the simulated inflorescence.
7. On the simulated inflorescence, bees failed to optimize when one morph provided a greater reward volume than did the other.
8. In the population of flowers bees flew from flower to flower, whereas, they walked on the simulated inflorescence.  相似文献
