The purpose of this study was to determine viscous properties of human muscle during plantarflexion efforts. Experiments were performed on 17 subjects with an ankle ergometer allowing sinusoidal oscillations during isometric contractions and isokinetic movements. Sinusoidal oscillations led to the expression of (i) Bode diagrams of the musculo-articular system allowing the determination of a damping coefficient (Bbode); and (ii) a viscous coefficient (Bsin) using an adaptation of Hill's equation to sinusoidal oscillations. Isokinetic movements led to torque-velocity relationships. They showed a fall in torque associated to an increase in angular velocity what was quantified by calculating a damping coefficient (Biso). Both experiments gave consistent results indicating that Bbode was the lowest viscous parameter. This difference is discussed in terms of (i) "analog" viscosity originating from muscle cross-bridges; and (ii) real mechanical damping of passive structures.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to investigate the behavior of human muscle fascicles during dynamic contractions. Eight subjects performed maximal isometric dorsiflexion contractions at six ankle joint angles and maximal isokinetic concentric and eccentric contractions at five angular velocities. Tibialis anterior muscle architecture was measured in vivo by use of B-mode ultrasonography. During maximal isometric contraction, fascicle length was shorter and pennation angle larger compared with values at rest (P < 0.01). During isokinetic concentric contractions from 0 to 4.36 rad/s, fascicle length measured at a constant ankle joint angle increased curvilinearly from 49.5 to 69.7 mm (41%; P < 0.01), whereas pennation angle decreased curvilinearly from 14.8 to 9.8 degrees (34%; P < 0.01). During eccentric muscle actions, fascicles contracted quasi-isometrically, independent of angular velocity. The behavior of muscle fascicles during shortening contractions was believed to reflect the degree of stretch applied to the series elastic component, which decreases with increasing contraction velocity. The quasi-isometric behavior of fascicles during eccentric muscle actions suggests that the series elastic component acts as a mechanical buffer during active lengthening.  相似文献

A modified Cybex II isokinetic dynamometer was used to evaluate the problems associated with measuring the concentric force-velocity characteristics of human knee extensor muscles. Three contraction protocols were investigated, simple voluntary contractions (VC); releases from maximal voluntary isometric contractions (VR) and releases from. isometric femoral nerve stimulated contractions (FNR). Percutaneous stimulation of the quadriceps was unsuitable for dynamic contractions as the proportion of the muscle activated varied with the angle of knee flexion. Isometric length-tension relationships and isokinetic contractions at seven angular velocities between 0.5 and 5.2 rad · s–1 were recorded in five subjects. During isometric and slow dynamic contractions the voluntary forces were often greater than those obtained by femoral nerve stimulation, probably due to subjects stretching the rectus femoris during voluntary manoeuvres. It was found that the VC protocol produced acceptable isokinetic force recordings only at velocities below 3.1 rad · s–1 in most subjects whilst VR contractions resulted in unexpectedly low forces at velocities below 1.57 rad · s–1. Of the three techniques employed, FNR, although uncomfortable for subjects, provided the most accurate and reliable method of measuring force-velocity characteristics of knee extensor muscles. FNR contractions produced a force-velocity curve which showed a smooth decline in force with increasing velocity up to 5.2 rad · s–1. VC contractions appear to be an acceptable alternative for testing the muscles provided the angular velocity is less than 3.1 rad · s–1 and the subjects can be prevented from stretching the rectus femoris during the movement.  相似文献

During repetitive contractions, muscular work has been shown to exhibit complex relationships with muscle strain length, cycle frequency, and muscle shortening velocity. Those complex relationships make it difficult to predict muscular performance for any specific set of movement parameters. We hypothesized that the relationship of impulse with cyclic velocity (the product of shortening velocity and cycle frequency) would be independent of strain length and that impulse-cyclic velocity relationships for maximal cycling would be similar to those of in situ muscle performing repetitive contraction. Impulse and power were measured during maximal cycle ergometry with five cycle-crank lengths (120-220mm). Kinematic data were recorded to determine the relationship of pedal speed with joint angular velocity. Previously reported in situ data for rat plantaris were used to calculate values for impulse and cyclic velocity. Kinematic data indicated that pedal speed was highly correlated with joint angular velocity at the hip, knee, and ankle and was, therefore, considered a valid indicator of muscle shortening velocity. Cycling impulse-cyclic velocity relationships for each crank length were closely approximated by a rectangular hyperbola. Data for all crank lengths were also closely approximated by a single hyperbola, however, impulse produced on the 120mm cranks differed significantly from that on all other cranks. In situ impulse-cyclic velocity relationships exhibited similar characteristics to those of cycling. The convergence of the impulse-cyclic velocity relationships from most crank and strain lengths suggests that impulse-cyclic velocity represents a governing relationship for repetitive muscular contraction and thus a single equation can predict muscle performance for a wide range of functional activities. The similarity of characteristics exhibited by cycling and in situ muscle suggests that cycling can serve as a window though which to observe basic muscle function and that investigators can examine similar questions with in vivo and in situ models.  相似文献

Recently it was demonstrated that postactivation potentiation (PAP), which refers to the enhancement of the muscle twitch torque as a result of a prior conditioning contraction, increased the maximal rate of torque development of tetanic and voluntary isometric contractions (3). In this study, we investigated the effects of PAP and its decay over time on the load-velocity relation. To that purpose, angular velocity of thumb adduction in response to a single electrical stimulus (twitch), a high-frequency train of 15 pulses at 250 Hz (HFT(250)), and during ballistic voluntary shortening contractions, performed against loads ranging from 10 to 50% of the maximum torque, were recorded before and after a conditioning 6-s maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). The results showed an increase of the peak angular velocity for the different loads tested after the conditioning MVC (P < 0.001), but the effect was greatest for the twitch ( approximately 182%) compared with the HFT(250) or voluntary contractions ( approximately 14% for both contraction types). The maximal potentiation occurred immediately following the conditioning MVC for the twitch, whereas it was reached 1 min later for the tetanic and ballistic voluntary contractions. At that time, the load-velocity relation was significantly shifted upward, and the maximal power of the muscle was increased ( approximately 13%; P < 0.001). Furthermore, the results also indicated that the effect of PAP on shortening contractions was not related to the modality of muscle activation. In conclusion, the findings suggest a functional significance of PAP in human movements by improving muscle performance of voluntary dynamic contractions.  相似文献

Edman has reported that the force-velocity relationship (FVR) departs from Hill's classic hyperbola near 0.80 of measured isometric force (J Physiol 404: 301-321, 1988). The purpose of this study was to investigate the biphasic nature of the FVR in the rested state and after some recovery from fatigue in the rat medial gastrocnemius muscle in situ. Force-velocity characteristics were determined before and during recovery from fatigue induced by intermittent stimulation at 170 Hz for 100 ms each second for 6 min. Force-velocity data were obtained for isotonic contractions with 100 ms of 200-Hz stimulation, including several measurements with loads above 0.80 of measured isometric force. The force-velocity data obtained in this study were fit well by a double-hyperbolic equation. A departure from Hill's classic hyperbola was found at 0.88+/-0.01 of measured isometric force, which is higher than the approximately 0.80 reported by Edman et al. for isolated frog fibers. After 45 min of recovery, maximum shortening velocity was 86+/-2% of prefatigue, but neither curvature nor predicted isometric force was significantly different from prefatigue. The location of the departure from Hill's classic hyperbola was not different after this recovery from the fatiguing contractions. Including an isometric point in the data set will not yield the same values for maximal velocity and the degree of curvature as would be obtained using the double hyperbola approach. Data up to 0.88 of measured isometric force can be used to fit data to the Hill equation.  相似文献

The present study examined the effect of theophylline on the shortening velocity of submaximally activated diaphragmatic muscle (i.e., muscles were activated by the use of a level of stimulation, 50 Hz, within the range of phrenic neural firing frequencies achieved during breathing, whereas maximum activation is achieved at 300 Hz). Experiments were performed in vitro on strips of diaphragmatic muscle obtained from 21 Syrian hamsters. Muscle shortening velocity was assessed during isotonic contractions against a range of afterloads, and Hill's characteristic equation was used to calculate velocity at zero load. In addition, unloaded shortening velocity was also measured by the slack test, i.e., from the time required for muscles to take up slack after a sudden reduction in muscle length. Theophylline (160 mg/l) increased the velocity of muscle shortening against a wide range of external loads (0-14 N/cm2) and increased the extrapolated unloaded velocity of shortening from 6.4 +/- 0.9 to 7.9 +/- 1.1 (SE) lengths/s (P less than 0.01). Theophylline reduced the time required to take up slack for any given step change in muscle length, increasing the unloaded velocity of shortening assessed by the slack test from 7.6 +/- 0.9 to 9.3 +/- 1.1 lengths/s (P less than 0.002). The effect of theophylline on diaphragmatic shortening velocity was evident at concentrations as low as 40 mg/l and increased progressively as theophylline concentrations were increased to 320 mg/l. Hill's (1938) two component muscle model is used as basis for digital computer simulation of human muscular contraction by means of an iterative process. The contractile (CC) and series elastic (SEC) components are lumped components of structures which produce and transmit torque to the external environment. The CC is described in angular terms along four dimensions as a series of non-planar torque-angle-angular velocity surfaces stacked on top of each other, each surface being appropriate to a given level of muscular activation. The SEC is described similarly along dimensions of torque, angular stretch, overall muscle angular displacement and activation. The iterative process introduces negligible error and allows the mechanical outcome of a variety of normal muscular contractions to be evaluated parsimoniously. The model allows analysis of many aspects of muscle behaviour as well as optimization studies. Definition of relevant relations should also allow reproduction and prediction of the outcome of contractions in individuals.  相似文献

The force-velocity (F-V) relationships of canine gastrocnemius-plantaris muscles at optimal muscle length in situ were studied before and after 10 min of repetitive isometric or isotonic tetanic contractions induced by electrical stimulation of the sciatic nerve (200-ms trains, 50 impulses/s, 1 contraction/s). F-V relationships and maximal velocity of shortening (Vmax) were determined by curve fitting with the Hill equation. Mean Vmax before fatigue was 3.8 +/- 0.2 (SE) average fiber lengths/s; mean maximal isometric tension (Po) was 508 +/- 15 g/g. With a significant decrease of force development during isometric contractions (-27 +/- 4%, P < 0.01, n = 5), Vmax was unchanged. However, with repetitive isotonic contractions at a low load (P/Po = 0.25, n = 5), a significant decrease in Vmax was observed (-21 +/- 2%, P < 0.01), whereas Po was unchanged. Isotonic contractions at an intermediate load (P/Po = 0.5, n = 4) resulted in significant decreases in both Vmax (-26 +/- 6%, P < 0.05) and Po (-12 +/- 2%, P < 0.01). These results show that repeated contractions of canine skeletal muscle produce specific changes in the F-V relationship that are dependent on the type of contractions being performed and indicate that decreases in other contractile properties, such as velocity development and shortening, can occur independently of changes in isometric tension.  相似文献

Standardized measurements of dynamic strength of the kneee extensor muscles were performed in 25 healthy male subjects (17-37 yr) by means of isokinetic contractions, i.e., knee extensions with constant angular velocities. Overall variation between double determinations of maximal torque throughout the 90 degrees arc of motion (0 degrees = fully extended leg) averaged 10% for the different constant velocities chosen. At any given angle of the knee the torque produced was higher for isometric than for dynamic contractions. Dynamic torque decreased gradually with increased speed of shortening. Peak dynamic torque was reached at knee angles in the range: 55-66 degrees, with a displacement toward smaller knee angles with higher angular velocities. Correlations were demonstrated between peak torque produced at the highest speed of muscle shortening and percent as well as relative area of fast twitch fibers in the contracting muscle. In addition muscles with a high percentage of fast twitch fibers had the highest maximal contraction speeds. These observations on intact human skeletal muscle are consistent with earlier findings in animal skeletal muscle preparations.  相似文献

Knowledge of the strength, endurance and coordination of the shoulder muscles during dynamic contractions in healthy women would contribute to the understanding of symptoms in that part of the body in patients with myalgia. Twenty clinically healthy women performed single maximal forward shoulder flexions at four different angular velocities (0.57-3.14 rad.s-1). The same subjects also took part in two endurance tests (at angular velocities of 0.57 and 2.09 rad.s-1, respectively) consisting of 150 repeated maximal shoulder flexions. Electromyographic activity (EMG) was registered from four shoulder flexors using surface electrodes. Work was used as the mechanical variable. During the endurance tests subjects rated their perception of fatigue in the shoulder muscles. Work and the amplitude of the EMG signals decreaesd with angular velocity. The mean power frequency of the EMG was constant in the span of angular velocities investigated. During the endurance tests, work and the mean power frequency decreased during the initial 40-60 contractions followed by stable levels. The relative work level was higher at 2.09 than at 0.57 rad.s-1. Greater relative increases of the signal amplitudes of EMG occurred at 2.09 than at 0.57 rad.s-1. The EMG activity between the flexions (during the supposed passive extension) was higher at 2.09 than at 0.57 rad.s-1. Such a high activity was associated with a low mechanical performance at 2.09 rad.s-1. It is suggested that the initial sharp decreases in work and in mean power frequency reflect the fatiguing of the fast twitch motor units. Dynamic work consisting of continuous activity could predispose to muscle complaints.  相似文献

At rest, the H-reflex is lower during lengthening than shortening actions. During passive lengthening, both soleus (SOL) and medial gastrocnemius (MG) H-reflex amplitudes decrease with increasing angular velocity. This study was designed to investigate whether H-reflex amplitude is affected by angular velocity during concentric and eccentric maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). Experiments were performed on nine healthy men. At a constant angular velocity of 60°/s and 20°/s, maximal H-reflex and M-wave potentials were evoked at rest (i.e., Hmax and Mmax, respectively) and during concentric and eccentric MVC (i.e., Hsup and Msup, respectively). Regardless of the muscle, Hmax/Mmax was lower during lengthening than shortening actions and the Hsup/Msup ratio was higher than Hmax/Mmax during lengthening actions. Whereas no action type and angular velocity effects on the MG Hsup/Msup were found, the SOL Hsup/Msup was lower during eccentric than concentric MVC and this depression was increased with higher angular velocity. Our findings indicate that the depression of the H-reflex amplitude during eccentric compared to concentric MVC depends mainly on the amount of inhibition induced by lengthening action. In conclusion, H-reflex should be evoked during both passive and active dynamic trials to evaluate the plasticity of the spinal loop.  相似文献

It has been reported that there is a relationship between power output and fibre type distribution in mixed muscle. The strength of this relationship is greater in the range of 3–8 rad · s–1 during knee extension compared to slower or faster angular knee extensor speeds. A mathematical model of the force: velocity properties of muscle with various combinations of fast- and slow-twitch fibres may provide insight into why specific velocities may give better predictions of fibre type distribution. In this paper, a mathematical model of the force: velocity relationship for mixed muscle is presented. This model demonstrates that peak power and optimal velocity should be predictive of fibre distribution and that the greatest fibre type discrimination in human knee extensor muscles should occur with measurement of power output at an angular velocity just greater than 7 rad · s–1. Measurements of torque: angular velocity relationships for knee extension on an isokinetic dynamometer and fibre type distribution in biopsies of vastus lateralis muscles were made on 31 subjects. Peak power and optimal velocity were determined in three ways: (1) direct measurement, (2) linear regression, and (3) fitting to the Hill equation. Estimation of peak power and optimal velocity using the Hill equation gave the best correlation with fibre type distribution (r > 0.5 for peak power or optimal velocity and percentage of fast-twitch fibres). The results of this study confirm that prediction of fibre type distribution is facilitated by measurement of peak power at optimal velocity and that fitting of the data to the Hill equation is a suitable method for evaluation of these parameters.  相似文献

The influence of an eccentric training on torque/angular velocity relationships and coactivation level during maximal voluntary isokinetic elbow flexion was examined. Seventeen subjects divided into two groups (Eccentric Group EG, n = 9 Control Group CG, n = 8) performed on an isokinetic dynamometer, before and after training, maximal isokinetic elbow flexions at eight angular velocities (from - 120 degrees s(-1) under eccentric conditions to 240 degrees s(-1) under concentric conditions), and held maximal and submaximal isometric actions. Under all conditions, the myoelectric activities (EMG) of the biceps and the triceps brachii muscles were recorded and quantified as the RMS value. Eccentric training of the EG consisted of 5x6 eccentric muscle actions at 100 and 120% of one maximal repetition (IRM) for 21 sessions and lasted 7 weeks. In the EG after training, torque was significantly increased at all angular velocities tested (ranging from 11.4% at 30 degrees (s-1) to 45.5% at - 120 degrees s(-1)) (p < 0.05). These changes were accompanied by an increase in the RMS activities of the BB muscle under eccentric conditions (from - 120 to - 30 degrees (s-1)) and at the highest concentric angular velocities (180 and 24 degrees s(-1)) (p < 0.05). The RMS activity of the TB muscle was not affected by the angular velocity in either group for all action modes. The influence of eccentric training on the torque gains under eccentric conditions and for the highest velocities was attributed essentially to neural adaptations.  相似文献

The force exerted by a muscle is a function of the activation level and the maximum (tetanic) muscle force. In "maximum" voluntary knee extensions muscle activation is lower for eccentric muscle velocities than for concentric velocities. The aim of this study was to model this "differential activation" in order to calculate the maximum voluntary knee extensor torque as a function of knee angular velocity. Torque data were collected on two subjects during maximal eccentric-concentric knee extensions using an isovelocity dynamometer with crank angular velocities ranging from 50 to 450 degrees s(-1). The theoretical tetanic torque/angular velocity relationship was modelled using a four parameter function comprising two rectangular hyperbolas while the activation/angular velocity relationship was modelled using a three parameter function that rose from submaximal activation for eccentric velocities to full activation for high concentric velocities. The product of these two functions gave a seven parameter function which was fitted to the joint torque/angular velocity data, giving unbiased root mean square differences of 1.9% and 3.3% of the maximum torques achieved. Differential activation accounts for the non-hyperbolic behaviour of the torque/angular velocity data for low concentric velocities. The maximum voluntary knee extensor torque that can be exerted may be modelled accurately as the product of functions defining the maximum torque and the maximum voluntary activation level. Failure to include differential activation considerations when modelling maximal movements will lead to errors in the estimation of joint torque in the eccentric phase and low velocity concentric phase.  相似文献

Measurements of human strength can be important during analyses of physical activities. Such measurements have often taken the form of the maximum voluntary torque at a single joint angle and angular velocity. However, the available strength varies substantially with joint position and velocity. When examining dynamic activities, strength measurements should account for these variations. A model is presented of maximum voluntary joint torque as a function of joint angle and angular velocity. The model is based on well-known physiological relationships between muscle force and length and between muscle force and velocity and was tested by fitting it to maximum voluntary joint torque data from six different exertions in the lower limb. Isometric, concentric and eccentric maximum voluntary contractions were collected during hip extension, hip flexion, knee extension, knee flexion, ankle plantar flexion and dorsiflexion. Model parameters are reported for each of these exertion directions by gender and age group. This model provides an efficient method by which strength variations with joint angle and angular velocity may be incorporated into comparisons between joint torques calculated by inverse dynamics and the maximum available joint torques.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate active muscle stiffness with the stretch reflex according to changes (in 110-ms period after stretching) in torque and fascicle length during slower angular velocity (peak angular velocity of 100 deg·s−1) in comparison with active muscle stiffness without the stretch reflex (in 60-ms period after stretching) during slower and faster (peak angular velocity of 250 deg·s−1) angular velocities. Active muscle stiffness in the medial gastrocnemius muscle was calculated according to changes in estimated muscle force and fascicle length with slower and faster stretching during submaximal isometric contractions (10–90% maximal voluntary contractions). Active muscle stiffness significantly increased for both angular velocities and analyzed periods as torque levels exerted became higher. The effects of angular velocities and the interaction between angular velocities and torque levels were not significantly different between 250 deg·s−1 (in 60-ms period after stretching) and 100 deg·s−1 (in 110-ms period after stretching) conditions. The effects of the analyzed periods and the interaction between analyzed periods and torque levels were not significantly different between the analyzed periods (60-ms and 110-ms periods after stretching) for the 100 deg·s−1 condition. Furthermore, active muscle stiffness measured during the same angular velocity had significant correlations between those calculated in the different analyzed periods, whereas those under 250 deg·s−1 (60-ms period after stretching) did not correlate with those under 100 deg·s−1 (110-ms period after stretching). These results suggest that active muscle stiffness is not influenced by the stretch reflex.  相似文献

The force velocity relationship of in vivo human muscle fibers has often been derived from the torque-angular speed relationship during maximal voluntary isokinetic contractions. However, the assumption of a close association between joint performance and muscle mechanics is questionable. We aimed to determine the relationship between knee extension angular speeds, vastus lateralis fascicle and muscle tendon unit (MTU) shortening speeds, and maximal knee extensor force for the entire range of knee joint movement, for the isokinetic range, and for the ranges before, after and at peak torque occurrence, with different commonly used pre-loading conditions. Higher peak forces were observed when knee extensions were preceded by a pre-load, despite the similarity in fascicle shortening speeds. For the entire and the isokinetic range, MTU always shortened faster than fascicles, and this difference increased as joint speed increased. Interestingly, fascicle shortening velocities were greater before compared to after peak torque occurrence while the opposite happened at the MTU level. Assuming a close relationship between joint and fascicle dynamics results in an overestimation of muscle contractile component shortening velocity or force production at peak torque. The force velocity relationships obtained in vivo depend crucially on the test conditions, and the movement range used for analysis.  相似文献

The force-length relationship is a basic property of skeletal muscle. Knowledge of this relationship is necessary for most analyses of human movement, and in simulation models predicting movement control strategies. Studies on animal muscles have shown that force-length relationships for sub-maximal contractions are not related through a simple scaling procedure to the relationship for maximal contractions. Furthermore, potentiation might produce a shift of sub-maximal relative to maximal force-length relationships. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that human force-elbow angle relationships for sub-maximal unpotentiated contractions are shifted to larger elbow angles (i.e. larger muscle lengths) compared to the relationship for maximal voluntary contractions (MVC), and that this shift is reduced, or even abolished, for sub-maximal potentiated contractions. Force-elbow angle relationships (48-160 degrees) were obtained from healthy subjects (n=13). At each of nine tested elbow angles, the test set consisted of a single twitch (ST(pre)) and a doublet twitch (DT(pre)) stimulation of m. biceps brachii, followed by an MVC, followed by another single twitch (ST(post)) and a doublet twitch (DT(post)) stimulation. The single and doublet twitches induced sub-maximal contractions. The force-elbow angle relationships for the pre-MVC (unpotentiated) twitch contractions were shifted to larger angles compared to those obtained for MVC. The force-elbow angle relationships for the post-MVC (potentiated) twitch contractions were shifted to smaller angles compared to those obtained for the unpotentiated twitch contractions. These results support the idea that the shift to larger muscle lengths for the sub-maximal, unpotentiated force-length relationships relative to the relationship for maximal contractions may be caused by a length-dependent Ca(2+) sensitivity that may be offset, at least in part, by potentiation.  相似文献

The involuntary angle-specific isokinetic plantar flexor torques of seven male subjects aged 18-21 yr were measured using a Cybex II dynamometer (Lumex) modified by the addition of a strain-gauge load cell to improve the dynamic response of the instrument. Supramaximal electrical stimuli were used to evoke a maximal tetanic response from the triceps surae and ensure constant muscle activation at each angular velocity studied. Angle-specific torques were measured over a range (0.5-5.0 rad/s) of preset velocities, torque decreasing in a nonlinear manner with increasing angular velocity. The torque-velocity data was adequately described by an exponential equation of the form: V = a(e-1/b - e-Po/b) where V = velocity (rad/s), P = torque (N.m), Po = isometric torque (N.m), and a and b are constants. The mean intrasubject coefficient of variation of torque over the range of velocities studies was 7.9 +/- 1.88% (SD).  相似文献
