In this study on the internal gills of the larvae of Bufo bufo we examined the ultrastructural features and, using cytochemical methods, showed the localization of guanylate cyclase in the presence of atrial natriuretic peptide. The gill apparatus consists of a series of arches each with a dorsal part or gill rakers with filtering and glandular functions. In the epithelium, cells were found that contain granular secretions similar to those atrial natriuretic factor-immunoreactive granules of larval Bufo arenarum gill rakers. The ventral portion of the gill arches is made up of gill tufts with a respiratory function. The cytochemical localization of the guanylate cyclase in the presence of exogenous atrial natriuretic peptide demonstrates that the internal gills of the larvae are an important target organ for the peptide and therefore, it is proposed that, at this level, the atrial natriuretic peptide carries out an important osmoregulatory role.  相似文献

The morphology of the gills, with their blood supply have been described in Notopterus notopterus and Colisa fasciatus in some detail. Gills are curved and perforated on the dorsolateral and ventrolateral wall of the pharynx. The gills consist of 2 rows of filaments which are stacked one above the other to form a space. The gill filaments are smaller on both the ends and larger in middle. The gill filaments are of pink colour as they are supplied with blood. Gill rakers are large in size in Notopterus notopterus while they are small in Colisa fasciatus. 3 pairs of basibranchials are present in Notopterus notopterus which are covered by median membranous bony plate while 2 basibranchials are present in Colisa fasciatus. 3 pairs of hypobranchials are present in both fishes. 5 pairs of ceratobranchials are present in which Vth ceratobranchial bears teeth. 4 pairs of epibranchials are present. 3 pairs of pharyngobranchials are present in which the tip of the IVth pharyngobranchial bears minute teeth in Notopterus notopterus while in Colisa fasciatus IInd and IIIrd pharyngobranchial bear minute ones. One afferent branchial vessel is present in Notopterus notopterus and Colisa fasciatus in each gill like in other teleostean fishes. One efferent branchial vessel is present in each gill of Notopterus notopterus while in Colisa fasciatus 2 efferent are represented in each gill.  相似文献

To better understand potential diet overlap among exotic Asian species of carp and native species of filter‐feeding fishes of the upper Mississippi River system, microscopy was used to document morphological differences in the gill rakers. Analysing samples first with light microscopy and subsequently with confocal microscopy, the three‐dimensional structure of gill rakers in Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, Hypophthalmichthys nobilis and Dorosoma cepedianum was more thoroughly described and illustrated than previous work with traditional microscopy techniques. The three‐dimensional structure of gill rakers in Ictiobus cyprinellus was described and illustrated for the first time.  相似文献

The structure of the dermal pectoral girdle of teleostean fishes is analyzed in relation to its functions. In bony fishes the vertebral column, with a horizontal axis, and the pectoral girdle, with a basically vertical axis, form the only skeletal links between the head and the body. The individual bones of the dermal girdle are considered as supporting units joined by a series of articulations that permit differential movement between adjacent bones. The movements mediated by this linkage system are: lateral swinging of the head relative to the body, expansion of the distance between the central areas of the two pectoral girdles to permit passage of large food items, and fore-and-aft movements of the anteroventral ends of the cleithra relative to the skull. Among other factors affecting the structure of the dermal pectoral girdle are the provision for the support of the pectoral fin base and the requirement for the effective operation of a sleeve valve between the girdle and the opercular cover.
Modifications of the dermal pectoral girdle in ostariophysine fishes are discussed. A brief history of the bony fish girdle in terms of its functional components is postulated.  相似文献

The development of gill rakers in the herring, Clupea harengus L. was followed from the larva to the adult. The first rakers appear on the gill arches at a total length ( t.l .) of about 16 mm. Their number then increases rapidly until the fish are about 50 mm t.l . when the rate of addition becomes much slower. The length of individual rakers and the space between them continues to increase throughout life. The rakers on the first gill arch account for almost 60% of the whole filtering area. The observed particle retention capabilities of the fish when filter-feeding were lower than those expected on the basis of the estimated spaces between the rakers. Several reasons are suggested for the discrepancy.  相似文献

A new peristediid, Paraheminodus kamoharai, is described from three specimens (106.9–114.8mm SL) collected from the Sulu Sea, the Philippines. The new species is easily distinguished from its congeners (Paraheminodus laticephalus and P. murrayi) in having 33 bony plates in the upper lateral row, the 24–25th to 30th bony plate each in the upper lateral row with a forwardly directed spine, 17–19 gill rakers on the lower limb, a long slender rostral projection (43.4–47.0% of head length), and short upper (41.1–42.3%) and lower jaws (36.5–37.2%).  相似文献

Synopsis Suspension-feeding fishes use gill structures for both respiration (lamellae) and food capture (rakers). During hypoxic exposure in eutrophic lakes or poorly circulated sloughs, many fishes, including Sacramento blackfish, Orthodon microlepidotus, increase their gill water flows, in part by increasing ventilatory stroke volumes. Stroke volume increases could compromise particle sieving efficiency by spreading interdigitated gill rakers from adjacent gill arches, although blackfish capture food particles by raker-guided water flows to a sticky buccal root. Using van Dam-type respirometers, blackfish respiratory variables and feeding efficiency (Artemia nauplii) were measured under normoxia (> 130 torr PO2) and hypoxia (60 torr PO2). Compared with non-feeding, normoxic conditions, gill ventilation volume, frequency, stroke volume, and gape all increased, while O2 uptake efficiency decreased, during hypoxia and during feeding. O2 consumption increased during feeding treatments, and % uptake of nauplii showed no difference between normoxic and hypoxic groups. Thus, blackfish display respiratory adaptations, including increased ventilatory stroke volumes, to survive in hypoxic environments such as Clear Lake, California. Importantly, they have also evolved a particle capture mechanism that allows efficient suspension-feeding under both normoxic and hypoxic conditions.  相似文献

Synopsis The filter feeding organ of cyprinid fishes is the branchial sieve, which consists of a mesh formed by gill rakers and tiny channels on the gill arches. In order to establish its possible role during growth we measured the following morphological gill raker parameters over a range of sizes in three cyprinid fishes, bream, white bream and roach: inter raker distance, bony raker length, raker width, cushion length and channel width. At any given standard length common bream has the largest inter raker distance, roach the lowest and white bream is intermediate. In the comb model of filter feeding the inter raker distance is considered to be a direct measure of the mesh size and retention ability (= minimal size of prey that can be retained) of a filter. For the three species under study there is a conflict between the comb model and experimental data on particle retention. Lammens et al. (1987) found that common bream has a large retention ability whereas roach and white bream have a much smaller one. A new model, the channel model (Hoogenboezem et al. 1991) has been developed for common bream; in this model the lateral gill rakers can regulate the mesh size of the medial channels on the other side of the gill slit. The present data indicate that this model is not appropriate for white bream and roach. At any given standard length white bream and roach only reach 70% of the raker length of common bream, which means that in this model the gill slits should to be very narrow during filter feeding. The gill rakers consist of a bony raker and a fleshy cushion. The bony rakers have a rather long needle-like part outside the cushion in bream, but not in white bream and roach which have blunt gill rakers. Blunt gill rakers are not suited to reduce the diameter of the medial channels. The comb model seems more appropriate for white bream and roach, but doubts about the validity of this simple model remain. The sum of the areas of the medial channels is an approximation of the area through which water flows in the filter. This channel area therefore gives an impression of the capacity or flow rate of the filter. With this capacity estimation and an estimation of energy consumption we calculated an energy ratio of filter feeding. The energy ratio decreases with increasing standard length with an exponent close to the expected exponent of -0.40. The energy ratio is highest in bream, intermediate in white bream and lowest in roach.  相似文献

When silver carp were introduced into the Netofa reservoirs at an initial density of 300–4500 fish per hectare in order to control phytoplankton and zooplankton, there was a significant reduction of algae, zooplankton, and suspended organic matter; the silver carp prevents the growth of blue-green algae.Annual yield ranged from 600 to 1500 kg per hectare. The growth of individual fish after 6 to 8 years was 6 to 15 kg per fish.Introducing silver carp to reservoirs as a means of biological control creates a balanced ecological system in which the interspecific competition is minimal and the environmental improvements are considerable.Silver carp and bottom-feeding fish create a positive synergism in the water-body by filtering phytoplankton and zooplankton from the water, excreting a major part of it to the bottom and enriching it with organic matter suitable for zoobenthos.  相似文献

The structure of the bony tubercles of the turbot, Scophthalmus maximus (L., 1758), was examined using ground sections, microradiography, SEM, and TEM. The tubercles are small, isolated, mineralized conical plates randomly distributed in the eyed side of the body. They are composed of three layers: the outer limiting layer, the external layer, and the basal plate, which make up the thin and flat elasmoid scales of Teleostei. The main difference between regular elasmoid scales and bony tubercles lies in the organization and the growth of the basal plate. Indeed, the conical shape of the tubercle is the result of a prominent thickening of the central part of the basal plate where the collagen matrix is organized in a complicated three-dimensional network. Densely packed thick collagen fibrils form superimposed plies organized in a plywood-like structure that resembles that of the elasmoid scales but it is criss-crossed by numerous vertical sheets of thin collagen fibrils. The tubercles originate from thin and flat plates located in the skin of larvae and juveniles, whose structure is that of regular-developing elasmoid scales. Thus, the tubercles of Scophthalmus maximus could be considered as modified elasmoid scales rather than bony structures. They might be the result of specific arrangements related to the general trend of reduction of the dermal skeleton in the teleostean lineage.  相似文献

We study crossflow filtration mechanisms in suspension-feeding fishes using computational fluid dynamics to model fluid flow and food particle movement in the vicinity of the gill rakers. During industrial and biological crossflow filtration, particles are retained when they remain suspended in the mainstream flow traveling across the filter surface rather than traveling perpendicularly to the filter. Here we identify physical parameters and hydrodynamic processes that determine food particle movement and retention inside the fish oral cavity. We demonstrate how five variables affect flow patterns and particle trajectories: (1) flow speed inside the fish oral cavity, (2) incident angle of the flow approaching the filter, (3) dimensions of filter structures, (4) particle size, and (5) particle density. Our study indicates that empirical experiments are needed to quantify flow parameters inside the oral cavity, and morphological research is needed to quantify dimensions of the filter apparatus such as gill rakers, the gaps between rakers, and downstream barriers. Ecological studies on suspension-feeding fishes are also needed to quantify food particle size and density, as these variables can affect particle retention due to hydrodynamic processes during crossflow filtration.  相似文献

Three lineages of cartilaginous fishes have independently evolved filter feeding (Lamniformes: Megachasma and Cetorhinus, Orectolobiformes: Rhincodon, and Mobulidae: Manta and Mobula); and the structure of the branchial filters is different in each group. The filter in Rhincodon typus has been described; species within the Lamniformes have simple filamentous filters, but the anatomy and ultrastructure of the branchial filter in the mobulid rays varies and is of functional interest. In most fishes, branchial gill rakers are elongated structures located along the anterior ceratobranchial and/or epibranchial arches; however, mobulid gill rakers are highly modified, flattened, lobe‐like structures located on the anterior and posterior epibranchial elements as well as the ceratobranchials. The ultrastructure of the filter lobes can be smooth or covered by a layer of microcilia, and some are denticulated along the dorsal and ventral lobe surface. Flow through the mobulid oropharyngeal cavity differs from other filter‐feeding fishes in that water must rapidly deviate from the free stream direction. There is an abrupt 90° turn from the initial inflowing path to move through the laterally directed branchial filter pores, over the gill tissue, and out the ventrally located gill slits. The deviation in the flow must result in tangential shearing stress across the filter surface. This implies that mobulids can use cross‐flow filtration in which this shearing force serves as a mechanism to resuspend food particles initially caught by sieving or another capture mode. These particles will be transported by the cross filter flow toward the esophagus. We propose that species with cilia on the rakers augment the shear mediated movement of particles along the filter with ciliary transport. J. Crosses between female carp x male grass carp resulted in androgenetic grass carp and hybrids. Fertilizing grass carp eggs with carp milt that had been irradiated with ultraviolet light for 15 min at 1.0 mW/cm2 produced gynogenetic grass carp. We compared the morphology of experimental progeny with that of the parental species to determine if inheritance was strictly matroclinous in gynogenesis and strictly patroclinous in andro-genesis. Dorsal and anal fin rays, lateral line scales, gill rakers, pharyngeal teeth, and the relative length of the dorsal fin all suggested that gynogenetic grass carp were identical with the maternal species and androgenetic grass carp with the paternal species. Hybrids were intermediate between the parents except that the number of anal rays was identical with that in carp. The number of dorsal rays, the body depth, and the pharyngeal teeth in hybrids were more like those in carp than in grass carp, whereas the number of gill rakers was more similar to that in the paternal species.  相似文献

Two types of mitochondria-rich cells were identified in the gill epithelium of the freshwater-adapted rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri, after selective impregnation of their tubular system with reduced osmium. A first type consisted of large cells with a poorly developed and loosely anastomosed tubular system; thus, that resembled the chloride cells commonly encountered in the gill epithelium of freshwater-adapted euryhaline fishes. A second type comprised smaller cells with an extensively developed and tightly anastomosed tubular system. These never reached the basal lamina of the gill epithelium and were adjacent to chloride cells, to which they were linked by shallow apical junctions (100-200 nm); thus, they resembled accessory cells, which are currently found in the gill epithelium of seawater-adapted fishes but are usually lacking in freshwater living fishes. Transfer of the freshwater-adapted trout into seawater induced the proliferation of the tubular system in the chloride cells and the formation of lateral plasma membrane interdigitations between accessory cells and the apical portion of the chloride cells. The length of the apical junction sealing off this extended intercellular space was reduced to 20-50 nm. The tubular system of the accessory cells was not modified. The extension of the tubular system in the chloride cells of the seawater-adapted fishes indicated that, as in most euryhaline fishes, these cells have a role in the adaptation of the rainbow trout to seawater. In contrast, the function of the presumptive accessory cells in freshwater trout remains to be established.  相似文献

On adult specimens of the common carp (Cyprinus carpio), we have carried out a histochemical and ultrastructural study of the epithelia which form the gill arch. Secondary lamellae have two cellular types, granular and mucous, which produce neutral carbohydrates and proteins rich in tryptophane, and another mucous cell type which contains glycosaminoglycans. In gill rakers, three cellular types show different histochemical behaviour: 1) granular cells elaborate neutral mucosubstances; 2) a second cell type contains glycosaminoglycans,, and 3) a third cell type secretes neutral and acid carbohydrates. We discuss the possible role of these cells according to their secretion. We describe pillar and chloride cells in secondary lamellae, and chloride and neuroendocrine-like cells in gill rakers.  相似文献

A new species of opisthoproctid, Dolichopteryx pseudolongipes, is described on the basis of three specimens (48.7–79.9 mm in standard length: SL) collected from the eastern Pacific Ocean. This species is characterized by small tubular eyes (diameter 2.7–3.9% SL), presence of an adipose fin, anal fin base originating under the dorsal fin base, relatively short predorsal (73.3–73.8% SL), prepelvic (64.3–67.9% SL), preanal (77.4–80.1% SL), and preanus (71.5–75.7% SL) lengths; 31–33 (=9–10 + 22–24) gill rakers and 43–45 vertebrae. Although D. pseudolongipes had previously been confused with Dolichopteryx longipes, many differences between the species are apparent [e.g., adipose fin absent, anal fin base origin just behind dorsal fin base, greater prepelvic length (70.3–72.7% SL), 25 gill rakers, and 46–47 vertebrae in D. longipes].  相似文献

SEM studies were made on the gills of freshwater mullets,Rhinomugil corsula andSicamugil cascasia, to correlate surface ultrastructure of various gill units with their probable functions. Two types of lamellated gill rakers of the former fish are suited for plankton feeding and the short, stumpy and transversely beaded gill rakers of the latter reflect the varied food and feeding habit of the fish.R. corsula has numerous mucous glands on the epithelium covering the gill arch and gill filaments,S. cascasia has fewer. In accordance with the differences in the density and distribution of the mucous glands, the microridged epithelial cells also show variations in their architectural plan. In both species the epithelium of the secondary lamellae is smooth, probably an adaptation for better gaseous exchange.  相似文献

从1993年8月到1994年11月,对感染台湾棘带吸虫囊蚴的鳙鳃丝、鳃耙进行了为期16个月的调查研究表明;鳃丝、鳃耙的感染率范围为0-100%(83.33±25.47%)、(61.13±44.45%),感染强度范围分别为0-109.15(54.89±34.09)、0-125.57(41.18±49.34),囊蚴的平均密度范围分别为0-97.76(46.94±26.25),0-125.57(40.61±49.71);当鳙体长小于90mm时,鳃丝、鳃耙的感染率、感染强度、囊蚴的平均密度随着其体长的增大而增长;当体长大于90mm时,三项指标随着其体长的增大具有减小的趋势,其中鳃耙的变化规律明显;当体长大于141.7mm时,鳃耙的感染率、感染强度、囊蚴的平均密度都为0;随着鳙的生长,鳃丝囊蚴所占的比例逐渐增大,从0增加到100%,而鳃耙囊蚴所占的比例逐渐减小,从100%下降到0.    相似文献

The surface ultrastructure of the gill arches and the gill rakers of an herbivorous fish, Cirrhinus mrigala was investigated by scanning electron microscopy. These structures show significant adaptive modifications associated with the food and feeding ecology of the fish. Closely lying short gill rakers and narrow inter-raker channels on the gill arches are associated to filter and retain food particles. Prominent epithelial protuberances on the gill rakers and the gill arches enable the taste buds, located at their summit, to project well above the surface of the epithelium. This could increase the efficiency of the taste buds in selective sorting of palatable food. Surface specializations of the postlingual organ are recognized adaptive modifications for selecting, trapping or holding food particles. Prominent molariform teeth born on the lower pharyngeal jaw, and the chewing pad opposite it, are associated to work together as an efficient pharyngeal mill. Mucous goblet cells are considered to elaborate mucus secretions to trap, glue and lubricate food particles for their smooth transport for swallowing.  相似文献

Encrasicholina auster sp. nov. (Clupeiformes: Engraulidae) is described on the basis of six specimens collected from Fiji, southwestern Pacific Ocean. The new species is distinguished from congeners by the following combination of characters: long upper jaw (posterior tip extending beyond posterior margin of preopercle) 20.8%–22.5% standard length (SL); long lower jaw 19.0%–20.7% SL; long head 29.1%–29.2% SL; three unbranched rays in the dorsal and anal fins; transverse scales 11; branched pectoral-fin rays 12–13; pseudobranchial filaments 19–21; gill rakers 45–49, 40–43, 26–31 and 22–25 on the first, second, third and fourth gill arches, respectively.  相似文献
