Phytoplankton distribution patterns are still largely unknown for the Pacific region of the Southern Ocean. Pigment distributions were determined by HPLC on 40-m samples collected from the mixed layer during the ANTXII/4 cruise in March–May 1995 aboard RV “Polarstern”. A transect was covered (90°W, from 51°S to 70°S), crossing the Subantarctic Front in the north, the Polar Front, and the Southern Polar Front in the south. Coinciding with high concentrations of silicate, diatoms dominated in the Antarctic waters south of the Polar Front. North of the Polar Front, silicate concentrations dropped to values less than 10 μM. In this area flagellates (Prymnesiophyceae and green algae) were the dominant phytoplankton group. Nutrient depletion of the surface waters near the Southern Polar Front indicated formerly enhanced productivity. These findings confirmed previous observations by the British Sterna expedition, which described locally elevated chlorophyll a biomass near the southern boundary of the Southern Polar Front. We propose a role for supply of bioavailable iron via the front, and emphasise the importance of frontal systems for phytoplankton productivity in the Southern Ocean. The composition of the phytoplanktonic communities in the surface waters of the La Reunion-Kerguelen transect (from 38°36S to 46°33S) has been investigated under spring conditions (Antarès 3 cruise, France-JGOFS, 28 September–8 November, 1995). The study, conducted at six stations in the subtropical frontal zone, involved size fractionations (threshold: 2 μm). The large variations in the overall biomass and autotrophic carbon fixation, calculated via Rubisco activity measurements and expressed respectively in terms of μg chlorophyll (a + b + c) per liter and nmol fixed carbon dioxide per liter and per hour, were attributable only to phytoplanktonic cells of >2 μm, with a peak observed in the frontal zone. The picophytoplankton (<2 μm) biomass remained constant throughout the transect, but the evolution of the species composition of the picophytoplanktonic population, as calculated from flow cytometry measurements through this frontal zone, changed. This study provides evidence, for the first time in this area, of the disappearance of prochlorophytes from the south of the frontal zone (42–47°S). Picoeukaryotes (<2 μm) and cyanobacteria populations, resolved by flow cytometry, were present all along the transect. However, their abundance decreased southward up to the quasi-disappearance of cyanobacteria at the southernmost station (52°S) that is characteristic of antarctic waters. The presence of prochlorophytes that is exclusive to the subtropical surface waters, and the low carbon fixation activity associated with these waters, may be linked to the specific hydrological features encountered. In contrast, the marked reduction in the cyanobacteria and the abundance of picoeukaryotes along the north-south transect is more likely to be a result of the reduction in temperature through the frontal zone. The composition and temporal changes in phytoplankton populationswere evaluated in local upwelling off the Izu Peninsula. Japan.in May. 1982. Phytoplankton in the upwelled water was dominatedby diatoms and that in the surrounding water by various flagellatesand monads. Phytoplankton started logarithmic growth almostimmediately after subsurface nutrient-rich water was upwellinginto the euphotic zone and nutrients were depleted within afew days. Growth enhancement was most striking among diatoms. As a result >50% of the total phytoplankton biomass of cells>2 µm was from a centric diatom. Leptocylindrus danicus. The results confirmed many past observations of the dominanceof diatoms in upwelled water. Such dominance is explained bythe rapid growth of diatoms when nutrient concentrations areenhanced.  相似文献

Phytoplankton dynamics in the open waters of the ice-edge zone of the Lazarev Sea were investigated over 12 consecutive days during a drogue study conducted in austral summer (December/January) 1994/1995. Throughout the study, the upper water column (<30 m) was stratified with a well-defined pycnocline evident. Although a subsurface intrusion of colder, more saline water into the region was recorded on days 5-9 of the experiment, its effect on the water column structure was negligible. Total surface chlorophyll a biomass doubled between days 1 and 5 (from 0.82 to 1.62 mg m-3), and then showed a tendency to stabilise, while the depth-integrated chlorophyll a standing stock displayed an increasing trend during the entire experiment. All changes in biomass were associated with an increase in microphytoplankton. Flagellates and picoplankton dominated cell counts, while diatoms composed most of the phytoplankton biovolume. Results of the study indicate that, during the period of investigation, average cell abundance decreased. Coupled with this decrease was an increase in the biovolume and average size of the phytoplankton. Phytoplankton succession was observed in the ice edge during the drogue study. Typical ice-associated species of genera Haslea, Fragilariopsis and Chaetoceros, which dominated at the beginning of study, were replaced by open-water species of genera Corethron, Dactyliosolen and Rhizosolenia. The shift in phytoplankton species composition and size can likely be related to high light intensities and grazing by microzooplankton. The intrusion of colder, more saline water on day 5 appeared to modify the diatom succession, indicating extreme variability in phytoplankton dynamics in the near ice-edge zone of the Lazarev Sea.  相似文献

A study was done of the relationship between hydrographic variables and the composition, abundance, community structure and biomass spectrums of coastal phytoplankton at scales greater than 100 km on the Yucatan Peninsula (SE Gulf of Mexico). This was done during the season of greatest environmental instability in the region, the northwind season (late fall to winter). Samples were collected at stations in the west (Campeche), north (Yucatan), and east (Quintana Roo) zones of the Peninsula. Measurements were taken of temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, dissolved inorganic nutrients (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and phosphate) and chlorophyll a, and samples were taken for phytoplankton analysis. The hydrographic results showed the Campeche zone as having the lowest salinity (<35 psu) values, as well as the highest inorganic nutrient and chlorophyll a values, all of which are related to continental water contributions. The Yucatan zone had the lowest temperatures and the lowest inorganic nutrient values, indicating influence from the Yucatan Current and the Gulf of Mexico. A total of 159 phytoplankton species were identified, dominated by diatoms (>80%) and dinoflagellates. Phytoplankton exhibited greater concentration, richness, equitability and diversity in Campeche, while the lowest community structure values were had in the Quintana Roo zone. The ordination analysis demonstrated that the dominant genera were the diatoms Chaetoceros, Pseudonitzschia and Thalassionema. The biomass spectrums exhibited the lowest slope in environments of higher heterogeneity, with Campeche being the most disturbed and heterogeneous zone and Quintana Roo that with the least heterogeneity.  相似文献

The present paper describes latitudinal and vertical changes in the composition, abundance and diversity of copepods in the Indian sector of the Antarctic Ocean, during the end of austral summer along a transect on 66°30′E between 43 and 62°S, within three layers (600–0, 200–0, 100–0 m). Highest copepod densities were noted in the central part of the transect, between the Antarctic Divergence and the Antarctic Convergence, with a maximum in the Antarctic Divergence zone, particularly in the upper levels of the water column. A total number of 80 copepod species were identified over the entire survey area. The south end and the central part of the transect comprised a small number of species. North of the Antarctic Convergence, this number increased markedly with the progressive disappearence of those species characteristic of Antarctic waters and their replacement by temperate and subtropical species. Generally, small copepods, particularly Oithona similis, Oithona frigida and Ctenocalanus citer, dominated in numbers in both Antarctic and sub-Antarctic areas. The contribution of large species to total copepod numbers was much lower, with Calanus simillimus in the central part of the transect, Pleuromamma borealis in the subtropical zone and Calanus propinquus in the southern part. Correspondence analysis showed a marked latitudinal gradient in population structure with four groups of samples and species corresponding to four latitudinal zones. Community structure (species richness, relative dominance index, evenness, Shannon species diversity index) and species abundance patterns (as rank-frequency diagrams) suggested that the maturity and species richness increased gradually from south to north. A low diversity index and evenness were observed in the area of the Antarctic Divergence, whereas the convergence zone showed high diversity and evenness. Conversely, the frontal zone showed high diversity and evenness. Distribution appeared unrelated to chlorophyll concentrations and on the large scale was related to the hydrologic characteristics. Phytoplankton abundance, biomass and species composition of the Caspian Sea were evaluated by using samples collected from the Iranian (southern Caspian Sea) and southern Kazakhstan (eastern Caspian Sea) surface waters in March 2001. A total of 45 taxa were found in the samples (20 diatoms, 17 dinoflagellates and 8 others). Abundance and biomass of diatoms were high at the eastern stations, while dinoflagellates were dominant in terms of both biomass and abundance in the southern region. Average abundance and biomass were 40 000 ± 35 000 cell l−1 and 580 ± 690 μg l−1. The mean biomass value found here for the Middle and southern Caspian Sea in March are difficult to compare with the past due to limited information, but seems higher than previously registered values. Higher chlorophyll values were also apparent from the SeaWIFS images in 2001 compared to those in 1998. This is suggested to be due to decreased grazing of phytoplankton by zooplankton which is voraciously preyed by the recent invasive ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi.  相似文献

From November 1992 to February 1995 a quantitative and qualitative phytoplankton study was conducted at a permanent station (Kerfix) southwest off the Kerguelen Islands, in the vicinity of the Polar Front (50°40′S–68°25′E). Phytoplankton populations are low in this area both during summers and winters. They consist, in order of decreasing cell abundance, of pico- and nanoflagellates (1.5–20 μm), coccolithophorids (<10 μm), diatoms (5–80 μm) and dinoflagellates (6–60 μm). Flagellates form the dominant group throughout the year and attain the highest summer average of 3.0 × 105 cells l−1. Next in abundance year-round are coccolithophorids with the dominant Emiliania huxleyi (highest summer 1992 average 1.9 × 105 cells l−1), diatoms (summer 1992 average 1.0 × 105 cells l−1) and dinoflagellates (average 3.8 × 104 cells l−1). Winter mean numbers of flagellates and picoplankton do not exceed 8.4 × 104 cells l−1; those of the three remaining algal groups together attain 2 × 104 cells l−1. Summer peaks of diatoms and dinoflagellates are mainly due to the larger size species (>20 μm). The latter group contributes most to the total cell carbon biomass throughout the year. Dominant diatoms during summer seasons include: Fragilariopsis kerguelensis, Thalassionema nitzschioides, Chaetoceros dichaeta, C. atlanticus, Pseudonitzschia heimii, and P. barkleyi/lineola. This diatom dominance structure changes from summer to summer with only F. kerguelensis and T. nitzschioides retaining their first and second positions. Any one of the co-dominant species might be absent during some summer period. The variable diatom community structure may be due to southward meandering of the Polar Front bringing “warmer” species from the north, and to the mixing of the water masses in this area. The entire community structure characterized both during summer and winters by the dominance of flagellates can be related to deep mixing (ca. 40–200 m) of the water column as the probable controlling factor. Monitoring for 6 years (2001–2006) showed that the population explosion of the alien ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi in the southern Caspian Sea coincided with a decline in the abundance and species number of mesozooplankton. While this decline appeared to have reduced the nourishment of sprat (also known as kilka), it seemed to have affected phytoplankton favorably mainly due to the decrease in grazing pressure. During 2001–2002, when M. leidyi abundance and biomass were at their highest levels, abundance of dinoflagellates and cyanophytes exceeded that of diatoms. Before the invasion (1996) and in some years after the invasion (2003, 2004 and 2006) diatom abundance was higher than the abundance of other groups. In September 2005, an unprecedented bloom of the toxic cyanophyte Nodularia sp. was observed in the southern Caspian Sea. Disappearance of edible zooplankton such as Eurytemora spp. was among the first changes observed after the expansion of M. leidyi in the area. Some changes in the macrobenthic fauna were also conspicuous after the increase of this ctenophore. While the biomass of some deposit feeders, such as the polychaete Nereis diversicolor and oligochaete species increased, benthic crustaceans decreased sharply in abundance during 2001–2003 and completely disappeared during 2004–2006. Iranian catches of kilka, the most abundant and widespread zooplanktivorous fish, decreased significantly in the southern Caspian Sea after 1999. Iranian landings of kilka dropped ~70% from 69,070 ± 20,270 t during 1995–2000 to 23,430 ± 12,240 t during 2001–2006, resulting in a loss of at least 125 million US dollars to the economy. There were also changes in the total catches of large predators such as the kutum and mullet, which mainly feed on kilka, between 1991 and 2006.  相似文献

The species composition, biomass, abundance, and species diversity of zooplankton were determined for samples collected from August 2002 to May 2003 from 14 stations in Yueqing Bay, China. Phytoplankton growth rate and microzooplankton grazing rate were obtained by using the dilution method developed by Landry and Hassett. The spatial and temporal variations of zooplankton and its relationship with environmental factors were also analyzed. The results showed that the zooplankton in the Yueqing Bay could be divided into four ecotypes, namely coastal low saline species, estuary brackish water species, offshore warm water species, and eurytopic species. A total of 75 species of zooplankton belonging to 56 genera and 17 groups of pelagic larva were identified in the Yueqing Bay. The coastal low saline species was the dominant ecotype in the study area, and the dominant species were Labidocera euchaeta, Acartia pacifica, Acrocalanus gibber, Pseudeuphausia sinica, and Sagitta bedoti among others. There was considerable seasonal variation in zooplankton biomass and abundance in the surveyed areas. The peak biomass appeared in August, descending in November and in May, and the lowest biomass appeared in February. Similarly, the highest abundance of zooplankton was observed in August, with the abundance descending in the following months: May, November, and February. There were similar horizontal distribution patterns for the biomass and the abundance of zooplankton. They both increased from the upper to the lower bay in February and May, but decreased from the upper to the lower bay in August. Biomass and abundance were evenly distributed in the Yueqing Bay in November. Moreover, there was marked seasonal variation in the species diversity of zooplankton, which conformed to the abundance of zooplankton. Results of the dilution experiments indicated that there was grazing pressure of microzooplankton on phytoplankton in the Yueqing Bay throughout the year though the rate of microzooplankton grazing on phytoplankton varied seasonally. Phytoplanktons were growing at 0.26–2.07/d and grazed by microzooplankton at a rate of 0.15–0.48/d in different seasons. __________ Translated from Acta Ecologica Sinica, 2005, 25(8): 1853–1862 [译自: 生态学报, 2005, 25(8): 1853–1862]  相似文献

The distribution of summer phytoplankton across the Straits of Magellan (SOM) was studied with the aims of tracing differences among the distinct subregions of the area and contributing to the knowledge of its biodiversity. Samples collected at 25 stations were observed and counted in light microscopy. Selected samples were observed with transmission electron microscopy. The main unifying feature of the phytoplankton in the SOM was the high abundance and numerical dominance of small-sized (<10 μm) eukaryotic species, among which coccoid cells of <3 μm size were predominant (56.2 ± 30.6 of the total phytoplankton abundance). They mostly belonged to the prasinophyte Pycnococcus provasolii, which was abundant (0.8–6,834 cells × 103 ml−1) at all stations with the exception of those in proximity to the Atlantic entrances, where it was not recorded. Small-sized (<3 and 3–5 μm) diatoms (Minidiscus trioculatus, Lennoxia faveolata and other undetermined centric species) attained high densities (<3,757 cells 103 ml−1) especially at stations of the Patagonian sectors, whereas microplanktonic diatoms were only found at the two entrances of the Straits. Dinoflagellates were constituted mainly by >10 μm forms in the Andean subregion and <10 μm naked species in the Patagonian subregion, contributing up to 75.9 and 41.8% of the total carbon in these two areas, respectively. In the Patagonian subregion, flagellates mainly constituted by <5 μm forms and by cryptomonads <10 μm comprised up to 53.9% of the total biomass. Several species identified in this study have never been reported in other investigations in the SOM, while others, including Pycnococcus provasolii and Lennoxia faveolata, have rarely been recorded elsewhere. Overall, the summer phytoplankton of the Straits does not resemble that of any other region of the world’s seas. Although some of the predominant species might have been overlooked elsewhere, their abundance and relative importance apparently constitute a distinctive feature of the SOM.  相似文献

Phytoplankton samples were collected from three mesotrophic lakes: Piaseczno, Rogóźno and Krasne during winter seasons (from January to March). The samples were analyzed for species analysis and abundance of planktonic algae in relation to different depths of water column (0–7 m). Selected water physical-chemical parameters were also measured. Abundance of phytoplankton depended strongly on the thickness of snow and ice cover or mixing conditions. The maximal phytoplankton total number reached about 5 × 106 ind. L−1 beneath the clear ice in the Krasne Lake, minimal numbers were recorded under the thick snow and ice layers in the Piaseczno Lake (2 × 103 ind. L−1). The winter phytoplankton communities were dominated by flagellates principally cryptomonads (Cryptomonas spp. Rhodomonas minuta), euglenophytes (Trachelomonas volvocina, T. volvocinopsis), dinoflagellates (Peridinium bipes, Gymnodinium helveticum) and chrysophytes (Mallomonas elongata, M. akrokomos, Dinobryon sociale) or non-motile small species of blue-green algae (e.g. Rhabdoderma lineare, Limnothrix redekei), diatoms (Stephanodiscus spp., Asterionella formosa), and green algae (e.g. Scenedesmus spp., Monoraphidium spp.). Phytoplankton abundance and structure showed differentiation during the winter season and along the water column as well.  相似文献

The feeding selectivity and the growth and reproductive success of the copepod Acartia tonsa have been studied in mesocosms fertilized at different Si:N ratios (0–1.75:1) and, therefore, at different compositions of the phytoplankton communities. Phytoplankton composition showed a strong response to nutrient ratios, with diatoms comprising >90% at Si:N ratios >1:1 of total biomass as opposed to <20% at the lowest ratio. A. tonsa strongly preferred feeding on motile prey (flagellates and ciliates) to feeding on diatoms. Nevertheless, diatoms comprised a substantial part of the diet at the highest Si:N ratios. A. tonsa egg production and the final (after 4 weeks) abundance of adults and copepodites showed no response to Si:N ratios while nauplii production slightly increased with Si:N ratios. It is concluded that the frequently reported deleterious effect of diatoms on copepod reproduction is rather unusual when copepods are confronted with a naturally diverse phytoplankton assemblage instead of clonal cultures in the laboratory.  相似文献

Although the northern Bering Sea is one of the most productive regions in the northern North Pacific Ocean and currently considered a declining productivity region, no recent primary productivity measurements have been collected in this region. Phytoplankton productivity was measured in the northern Bering Sea in 2007 using a dual 13C–15N isotope tracer technique to quantify present rates of primary productivity and to assess changes under recent environmental conditions in this area. We found that large diatoms (mostly Fragilaria sp.) dominated the phytoplankton during the initial part of the cruise, whereas unidentified nano + pico phytoplankton largely dominated at the surface about 2 weeks later (at “revisited stations”). At the 1% light depth, diatoms and Phaeocystis sp. were the dominant species, whereas diatoms and unidentified nano + pico cells were dominant at the revisited sites. Based on nitrate and ammonium uptake rates, the estimated f-ratios (the ratio of nitrate uptake rate/nitrate + ammonium uptake rates of phytoplankton) were high (0.65–0.74), indicating that nitrate was an important nitrogen source supporting primary production in the northern Bering Sea during the cruise in 2007. Compared with previous studies performed several decades ago, we found significantly lower chlorophyll-a concentrations and carbon uptake rates of phytoplankton in the northern Bering Sea in 2007. This is consistent with recent studies that have shown lower rates of production in the Chukchi Sea and declines in benthic biomass and sediment oxygen uptake in the northern Bering Sea.  相似文献

Phytoplankton succession and sinking rates were studied from January to December 2003 at a coastal station in the Gulf of Trieste (northern Adriatic Sea), 200 m offshore, in a relatively undisturbed area. A conical sediment trap, moored at 15 m depth (water depth 17 m), was used. The hypothesis if the presence of benthic and epiphytic diatoms can lead to an overestimation of the vertical fluxes was tested. To evaluate primary and secondary sedimentation contributions, planktonic, benthic and epiphytic diatoms were distinguished. Benthic species abundance varied throughout the year and it was related to resuspension that strongly influenced sinking rates. All over the year, diatoms were the prevailing class in the trap material accounting for 75.32% of the settled cells, while flagellates represented 24.11%. Dinophyceae and resting cells constituted minor components, accounting for 0.43% and 0.14%, respectively. The gross sedimentation rates ranged from 0.006 × 108 cell m−2 d−1 in the second week of May to 6.30 × 108 cell m−2 d−1 in the third week of January with a mean annual value of 1.09 ± 1.43 × 108 cell m−2 d−1. To the primary sedimentation rate Pseudo-nitzschia seriata of the group “Nitzschia seriata complex” contributed for 49.77% followed by Chaetoceros spp. (23.88%). The major contributor to the secondary sedimentation rate was the diatom Paralia sulcata, accounting for 24.76%. Epiphytic diatoms contributed for 11.19% and 12.27% on annual average gross abundance and biomass, respectively, reaching even 72.04% of gross abundance and 56.06% of gross biomass in the second week of August. The correlation between temperature and the logarithm of the epiphytic biomass was statistically significant, with r = 0.66 and P < 0.001. Both in the cluster analysis and in the PCA four main groups were formed, where benthic and epiphytic species were separately gathered. Planktonic, benthic and epiphytic forms accounted for 50.78%, 36.95% and 12.27%, respectively, calculated on the annual average biomass. Therefore, vertical fluxes can be overestimated of 50% or more if benthic and epiphytic species are not rejected.  相似文献

We investigated the temporal stability of phytoplankton at a subtropical coastal site for 9 months by conducting chlorophyll and flow cytometric measurements at relatively high frequency (roughly at 2–5 day interval). Phytoplankton cells were grouped based on their sizes obtained from flow cytometric signals. We also conducted dilution experiments to estimate the growth and grazing mortality rates of different phytoplankton groups to assess whether the temporal stability of phytoplankton abundances was related with phytoplankton growth/grazing rates. Based on size-fractionated chlorophyll measurements, there was some indication that smaller phytoplankton cells were more stable than larger ones. However, by cytometric counting, there was no evidence for greater stability in small cells. Synechococcus, which had the lowest stability and dominated the <1 μm size class, showed a strong seasonal cycle that was highly dependent on temperature whereas eukaryotes did not have evident seasonal cycles. In general, biomass of a phytoplankton group consisting of several size classes was more stable than that of its sub component, consistent with the hypothesis that higher diversity leads to higher stability, probably related with the effect of statistical averaging (portfolio effect). Stability of heterotrophic bacteria was much higher than that of phytoplankton, leading to the speculation that bacteria were more diverse than phytoplankton. Phytoplankton stability was not related with their growth or grazing mortality rates. Our study suggests that species diversity should be taken into account when considering the temporal stability of phytoplankton.  相似文献

  • 1 Phytoplankton species composition, numerical abundance, spatial distribution and total biomass measured as chlorophyll a concentration were studied in relation to environmental factors in September 1994 (dry season) and March 1995 (rainy season), respectively, in the Kenyan waters of Lake Victoria; 103 species were recorded.
  • 2 Blue‐green algae (Cyanophyceae) were most diverse, followed by diatoms (Bacillariophyceae), green algae (Chlorophyceae) and dinoflagellates (Dinophyceae).
  • 3 Twinspan separated the phytoplankton communities in the Nyanza Gulf and those in the open lake during both seasons. During the dry season, the Nyanza Gulf was strongly dominated by blue‐greens, while diatoms dominated in the open lake. During the rainy season, blue‐greens remained dominant in the Nyanza Gulf although the number of species found was lower than during the dry season; in the open lake, blue‐greens replaced diatoms as the dominant group and there were more species than in the dry season.
  • 4 Canonical correspondence analysis indicated that the phytoplankton species distribution was significantly correlated with turbidity during the dry season and with SiO2 during the rainy season. Chlorophyll a concentrations ranging from 2.0 to 71.5 mg m‐3 in the dry season and 2.0–17.2 mg m‐3 in the rainy season confirm earlier reports of increasing phytoplankton biomass in Lake Victoria since the 1960s.

Phytoplankton data obtained during six summer Polish expeditionsto the Antarctic Peninsula area, are compared with concurrentlyrecorded data on water column stabilities and krill abundance. The results show that flagellates (1.5–20 µm) arenumerically dominant over diatoms in the areas of deep verticalmixing and/or extensive krill concentrations. Of 102 stationsdominated by flagellates, 85 (83.3%) are located in a well mixedwater column (>100 m) and correspond to a mean krill densityof 15–346 t Nm–2. In the same areas, estimated flagellatecarbon biomass exceeds diatom carbon. On the other hand, ofthe 40 stations dominated by diatoms, 36 (90%) are located inareas of increased water column stability (upper mixed layerof 10–50 m) and correspond to a low mean krill biomassof 0.34–4.6 t Nm–2. Positive correlations of flagellateto diatom (F:D) cell number ratios with the depth of the uppermixed layer suggest light limitation of diatom growth and anincreased sinking rate of diatoms relative to flagellates inthe areas of deep vertical mixing. The relationship of the F:Dratio with krill abundance suggests that krill prefer feedingon diatoms and are less efficient in grazing particles of thesize of microflagellates (<20 µm). Flagellates exceeddiatoms in an unstable water column when the phytoplankton populationsare low; both algal groups increase in numbers with growingstability. The results provide field evidence that deep verticalmixing and krill grazing create conditions for the dominanceof flagellates over diatoms. Both factors acting together arelikely to suppress diatom blooms in the Antarctic.  相似文献
