Summary The Argyrotopos profile of the Oligocene Ayii Pantes Formation in the NW Greece was studied using litho- and biofacies-analysis. The exposed sequence is mainly composed of monotonous marls and sandy marls. A rich fossil content, e.g. calcareous nannoplankton, is recorded. Some sandstone beds and two graded limestone beds with abundant lepidocyclinids and globigerinids are intercalated. The nannofossil assemblages from the measured profile of the Ayii Pantes Formation are attributed to theSphenolithus distentus Zone (NP 24) which is equivalent to theCyclicargolithus floridanus Subzone (CP 19a) of the Chattian, Upper Oligocene. The deposition took place in an euphotic subtidal environment situated on the eastern margin of the Apulian Platform. The lepidocyclinids were derived from this platform and were transported basinwards. The formation of the marls is influenced by sediment flux from the west.  相似文献

In a fine-grained Lower to Middle Kimmeridgian marly limestone rhythmite succession, with scarce benthos, fluctuations in ecological and depositional conditions that affected the substrate are detected by analysing trace-fossil assemblages. The dominant grey mudstones with Chondrites and Planolites superimposed on lumpy matrix sediments indicate both late colonisation of dysaerobic mixed layers and the completeness of the stratigraphic record. Major disruptions in rhythmic deposition and substrate colonisation are recorded at the base of thick intercalations of marls in sedimentary packages that were related to tectonic instability. Minor disruptions affected only the deposition of the overlying limestone beds. The trace-fossils reveal changes in the ecological and depositional conditions affecting the substrate during deposition of monotonous marly limestone rhythmites at levels of resolution higher than biostratigraphic, ecostratigraphic and taphonomic resolution. This research demonstrates the application of trace-fossil analysis to approach stratigraphic completeness (maturation) in homogeneous marly limestone rhythmites  相似文献

Facies and environment of the Leckkogel beds (Carnian;Alps)   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
The Carnian Leckkogel beds represent a carbonate sequence, which was deposited in front of an actively spreading carbonate platform. The typical Leckkogel beds are characterized by highly diverse sponge buildups. Sphinctozoan sponges predominate together with rare bryozoans and hydrozoans as well as red algae and thin crusts of cyanophyceans. Foraminifera are very rare and dasycladaceans are missing altogether. Oncoidal limestones containing predominantly inozoans are coeval with the Leckkogel beds. They represent a short-lived colonization of the sea-floor within a basinal environment. In addition to this autochthonous development, allochthonous intercalations of debris-flow sediments occur. The basinal facies consists of shales and argillaceous schists. Towards the edge of the platform the Leckkogel beds interfinger laterally with the Tisovec limestone, which exhibits two main facies types, a reef facies and a lagoonal facies.  相似文献

U-shaped burrows identified as the trace fossil Arenicolites occur in the Cambro-Ordovician Cow Head Group, a series of thin-bedded limestones interbedded with graptolitic shale and thick beds of limestone breccia and conglomerate. The lithology, limestone petrography, and trace fossils indicate deposition on a submarine slope of a slowly submerging carbonate platform. The limestone bed containing Arenicolites probably represents a period of slow deposition. The steeply inclined U-shaped burrows are assumed to have been formed by polychaete worms of the family Mochtyellidae which thrived in an argillaceous carbonate mud bottom of a carbonate platform slope, in depths exceeding 200 m. Although Arenicolites is believed to denote a shallow-water environment, its presence in the Cow Head extends the ecological niche of the Arenicolites-producing organisms into the outer shelf and continental slope. The domichnia of suspension feeders thus extends from shallow- to deep-water environments.  相似文献

Although comparatively little research has been undertaken into the secondary metabolites of bryozoans as compared with those of other marine invertebrates, bryozoans have proven to be an excellent source of novel and/or biologically active compounds. The majority of bryozoan metabolites isolated to date have been alkaloids. In our continuing search for bioactive and/or novel compounds from New Zealand marine bryozoans, we undertook an investigation of an extract of Pterocella vesiculosa (order Cheilostomatida, suborder Ascophorina, family Catenicellidae) which possessed activity against P388 murine leukaemia cells. Two alkaloids, pterocellins A–B (1–2) have been isolated from the bryozoan. The biological activity of these alkaloids was examined including their activities in the in vitro 60 cell line panel and in vivo hollow fibre assays at the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The isolation and characterisation of further pterocellin analogues is currently in progress and tentative structures for two new members of this series, pterocellins C–D (3–4) are proposed, based on NMR and mass spectral data.  相似文献

More than two thirds of beds in the lowest Jurassic, Blue Lias Formation lack ammonites, which are commonly preserved in irregular or planar-bedded, bioturbated limestones, very rarely in laminated limestones and almost never in laminated black shales. Ammonites are preserved in 3D in nodular and planar-bedded limestones and at any orientation to bedding. Co-occurrence with macrobenthos and absence from beds without benthos suggest that Blue Lias ammonites were nektobenthonic. Scour structures and imbrication of ammonites in the Best Bed imply presence of traction currents. Lack of epifauna on large cephalopod shells (and other fossils) implies rapid deposition in event beds. Blue Lias deposition was episodic, not slow and continuous as the fine grain size implies. Undistorted trace fossils, uncrushed ammonites and stable isotope values all suggest early cementation of limestone beds from pore waters of a similar composition to contemporary Jurassic sea water. A clear diagenetic trend exists, with limestones having least, and laminated black shales most, modified stable isotope values. Contrast between trace fossil fills and host sediment demonstrates that Blue Lias rhythms are primary, but limestone beds have been diagenetically cemented.  相似文献

Microencrusters and microtaphonomic features of the Oxfordian spongiolithic limestones of the External Prebetic were studied using thin-section analysis. The spongiolithic limestone is a bioclastic-rich packstone with common echinoderm, mollusc and brachiopod remains. The bioclasts show a high fragmentation index and frequent microborings. The encrustation index (E i) is higher for fragments of serpulids, ammonoids and bivalves, and increases with the initial grain-size of bioclasts. The main microencrusters consist of benthic microbial communities (BMC) and nubeculariids, as well as subordinate calcareous and siliceous agglutinated foraminifera, serpulids and bryozoans. BMC are usually the first colonizers, and encrusting foraminifera mainly appear on bioclasts larger than 2 mm. BMC dominate in well-developed encrustations on upward facing surfaces of larger bioclasts that are also colonized by foraminifera (nubeculariids and Subdelloidina). Bullopora, serpulids and bryozoans are more common on lower surfaces. The fact that the values of encrustation index, encrustation thickness and diversity of the microencrusters increase with the size of bioclasts is related to a higher stability and exposure time of the available bioclastic substrate. The microencruster distribution on upper and lower surfaces of large bioclasts may be related to photic control, space competition and/or predation avoidance.  相似文献

A combination of encrusting calcitic bryozoans and early seafloor dissolution of aragonitic shells recorded in the Cincinnatian Series of the upper Midwest of North America allowed the preservation of abundant moulds of mollusc fossils bioimmured beneath the attachment surfaces of the bryozoans. We here call this preservational process ‘bryoimmuration’, defined as a bryozoan‐mediated subset of bioimmuration. The bryozoans moulded very fine details of the mollusc shells, usually with more accuracy than inorganic sediment moulds. Most of the bryozoans are heterotrypid trepostomes with robust low‐Mg calcite skeletons. The molluscs are primarily bivalves, gastropods, nautiloids and monoplacophorans with their originally aragonitic shells now dissolved. Many of the encrusting bryozoans are so thin and broad that they give the illusion of calcitic mollusc shells clinging to the moulds. Some molluscs in the Cincinnatian, especially monoplacophorans and epifaunal bivalves, would be poorly known if they had not been bryoimmured. Unlike internal and external moulds in sediment, bryoimmured fossils could be transported and thus record aragonitic faunas in taphonomic assemblages (e.g. storm beds) in which they would otherwise be rare or absent. In addition, bryoimmurations of aragonitic shells often reveal the ecological succession of encrustation on the shells by exposing the earliest encrusters and borings that were later overgrown. Bryoimmuration was common during the Late Ordovician because the calcite sea at the time quickly dissolved aragonitic shells on the seafloor before final burial, and large calcitic bryozoans very commonly used molluscs as substrates. Bryoimmuration is an important taphonomic process for preserving aragonitic faunas, and it reveals critical information about sclerobiont palaeoecology. Several Cincinnatian mollusc holotypes are bryoimmured specimens. Bryozoans involved in bryoimmuration enhance the preservation of aragonitic fauna and thus act as taphonomic engineers.  相似文献

Summary The upper part of the LowerPseudoschwagerina Limestone (Rattendorf Group), outcropping on the northwestern flank of Schulterkofel Mountain, Carnic Alps (Austria) is described with special emphasis on fusulinid microfossils and facies. This fusulinid-rich section offers an ideal opportunity for biostratigraphy in defining the Permo-Carboniferous boundary in this region. The LowerPseudoschwagerina Limestone is composed of shallow-marine limestones with intercalated thin siltstone and sandstone beds. Fusulinid limestones are represented by two types of wackestones, both containing large quantities of smaller foraminifers. Fusulinid grainstones are rare. Limestones rich in fusulinids were found only within the bedded limestone facies in beds both below and especially above siliciclastic intercalations. This may indicate that the best living conditions for fusulinids existed immediately before and especially after the climax of a regressive phase (sea-level lowstand). The fusulinid limestones were deposited within a protected, shallow-marine shelf environment with normal salinity. Pseudoschwagerinid fusulinids appear in the upper part of the LowerPseudoschwagerina Limestone, in samples SK 107d (undeterminable species) and SK 108, i.e. between 92 m and 93 m above the base of the section within a bedded limestone immediately above the uppermost clastic intercalation. The fusulinid fauna is represented by about 30 species belonging to only a few genera. Species ofTriticites andRugosofusulina dominate, whereas those ofDaixina, Rugosochusenella andPseudofusulina are rare. A characteristic feature of the fauna is the strong similarity with fusulinid faunas described from Russia as well as from Middle and East Asia. Some of the described fusulinids are new for the Carnic Alps. The first appearance ofPseudoschwagerina andOccidentoschwagerina (Occidentoschwagerina alpina Zone) in the upper part of the LowerPseudoschwagerina Limestone in the Schulterkofel section defines the position of the Carboniferous-Permian boundary.  相似文献

Juvenile sporophytes of the giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera (L.) C. A. Agardh, were transplanted from local kelp beds to stations located various distances from the outfall from an electrical generating station that was known to cause an increase in the settlement of fouling organisms. Plants near the outfall became heavily fouled by the encrusting bryozoan, Membranipora membranacea (L.), and lost about one-third of their blades during the course of the experiment. Blade loss was significantly correlated with amount of fouling. To test the hypothesis that fouling causes blade loss, we paired fouled and unfouled plants of about the same age, overall length, and number of fronds and placed them at stations in nearby kelp beds and near the outfall. At the stations in the kelp beds, the fouled plants lost blades more rapidly than the unfouled controls. However, at the station near the outfall the “control” plants quickly became fouled so there was little difference in treatments and there was no significant difference in blade loss. Plants fouled by Membranipora suffered greater blade loss than clean plants probably because fouled blades are fragile and break off easily and because fish bite off chunks of blade while foraging on the attached bryozoans.  相似文献

To obtain a restoring and protective calcite layer on degraded limestone, five different strains of the Bacillus sphaericus group and one strain of Bacillus lentus were tested for their ureolytic driven calcium carbonate precipitation. Although all the Bacillus strains were capable of depositing calcium carbonate, differences occurred in the amount of precipitated calcium carbonate on agar plate colonies. Seven parameters involved in the process were examined: calcite deposition on limestone cubes, pH increase, urea degrading capacity, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS)-production, biofilm formation, ζ-potential and deposition of dense crystal layers. The strain selection for optimal deposition of a dense CaCO3 layer on limestone, was based on decrease in water absorption rate by treated limestone. Not all of the bacterial strains were effective in the restoration of deteriorated Euville limestone. The best calcite precipitating strains were characterised by high ureolytic efficiency, homogeneous calcite deposition on limestone cubes and a very negative ζ-potential.  相似文献

Field surveys (dating back to 1950) and aerial photograph series (dating back to 1966) were evaluated to determine sites of intertidal blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) beds at the Wadden Sea coast of Lower Saxony. Maps were prepared indicating sites of blue mussel beds during the last decades. A table gives additional information on the presence (or absence) of blue mussel beds at each site at the time of large-scale surveys. Altogether 187 sites of M. edulis beds were recorded in the investigation area. In spring 1996, there were still only 19 sites where mussel beds still occurred, although at 51 sites residual mussel-bed structures were present, e.g. shell bases of former beds or protruding patches (which had been occupied by M. edulis before the beds vanished) and open spaces. At that time, the majority of the sites contained neither mussel beds nor mussel-bed structures. The analysis of recent data confirmed that mussel larvae have preferred to settle in sites of present mussel beds and sites with bases of former mussel beds. There was no preferential selection of one of these categories (settled beds vs. shell bases). On the other hand, the presence of mussel beds or mussel bed structures is not obligatory for settlement, because sites without those structures were also re-settled by the spatfall in 1996, even though on a smaller scale.  相似文献

The distribution and recent reduction of Gelidium beds, i.e. mat-like beds dominated by the agarophyte G. elegans Kützing in Toyama Bay (Sea of Japan), in which 95% of the coastline is protected artificially, are reported. Gelidium beds were common in shallow waters (usually < 10 m deep); most of the large beds (> 1 ha) were restricted to the inner coasts of the bay. In calm and eutrophic areas, however, G. elegans was heavily colonized by epiphytes. In the last decade, two beds were buried in situ and beds in their vicinity were damaged by the stagnation of coastal water and/or sedimentation by silts which accompanied land reclamation. At the other two beds monitored since 1988, Gelidium declined a few times but most prominently in 1998, when episodic long summer rain was recorded. This is the first report, not only on the current status of Gelidium beds other than for the central Pacific Coast of Honshu in Japan, but also concerning reduction of the beds caused by both anthropogenic and natural events.  相似文献

We describe two new species of esthonioporate bryozoans, Revalotrypa inopinata sp. nov. and R. yugaensis sp. nov., from the Lower Ordovician, south-east of Lake Ladoga, north-western Russia. The colonies of the two species are very small and were extracted from limestone nodules found in the lower part of glauconitic sandstone in the Joa Member (lowermost Floian). Revalotrypa inopinata sp. nov. and R. yugaensis sp. nov. are the oldest known bryozoans from Baltoscandia. Study of the two species includes scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging and X-ray microtomography (micro-CT). The palaeogeographic distribution of the oldest known bryozoans from the Lower Ordovician and the advantages and disadvantages of micro-CT for the study of Palaeozoic bryozoans are discussed. The authorship of Revalotrypidae, which has been inconsistently allocated in the literature, is discussed.  相似文献

I studied the population densities and the microdistributions of the four most abundant mayfly (Ephemeroptera) nymphs in Myriophyllum heterophyllum beds in Pennington Creek, Johnston County, Oklahoma, from May to December, 1977. The section of the stream studied has relatively constant flow rates and temperatures throughout the year due to continuous inflow from groundwater. This uniform physical environment allows the plant beds to grow throughout the year and provide a permanent habitat. The four mayflies are Tricorythodes fictus (Tricorythidae), Caenis delicata (Caenidae), Baetis favistriga and B. quilleri (Baetidae). All four species are of similar size and feed by scraping periphyton from the surface of the Myriophyllum. T. fictus and the two species of Baetis have overlapping microdistributions in the leafy, upper one-half of the plant bed. T. fictus and C. delicata have overlapping microdistributions in the lower portion of the plant bed and roots. Each species has similar population densities where their distributions overlap. There is no significant selection for position with respect to current flow in the Myriophyllum for any of the species. Food and space are always abundant, especially in the top one-half of the Myriophyllum. There are no major changes in these trends over the year.  相似文献

Allergy to house dust mites, particularly tothe genus Dermatophagoides is a fairlycommon problem in Calcutta and its adjoiningareas since last two decades. Both the commonspecies of the genus Dermatophagoidesi.e. D. farinae and D.pteronyssinus are found to be abundant in thedust samples collected from beds of patientssuffering from nasobronchial allergic disordes. The presence of these mites in quite a goodnumber in the patients' beds are clinicallycorrelated with the aetiopathology of variousallergic manifestations like bronchial asthma.Dermatophagoides mites may occupydifferent niches in the homes of asthmatics andare more common in beds than elsewhere in thehouse, however, the distribution and abundanceof these mites are influenced by somesocio-ecological factors. The aim and objectiveof the present study is to assess the impact ofsome common socio-ecological managementpractices like the age of house, age ofmattress, type of mattress, frequency ofcleaning of the mattress and even the economicstatus of the patients on the growth, multiplication and finally accumulation ofthese mites in the patients' surroundings.Proper identification of offending allergensand subsequent reduction of load of these miteallergens from the patient's environment may behelpful for the prophylactic management ofthese diseases in Calcutta metropolis.  相似文献

Genetic structure and diversity can reveal the demographic and selective forces to which populations have been exposed, elucidate genetic connections among populations, and inform conservation strategies. Beds of the clonal marine angiosperm Zostera marinaL. (eelgrass) in Chesapeake Bay (Virginia, USA) display significant morphological and genetic variation; abundance has fluctuated widely in recent decades, and eelgrass conservation is a major concern, raising questions about how genetic diversity is distributed and structured within this metapopulation. This study examined the influence of bed age (<65years versus<6years) and size (>100ha versus<10ha) on morphological and genetic (allozyme) structure and diversity within Chesapeake Bay eelgrass beds. Although both morphology and genetic diversity varied significantly among individual beds (F ST=0.198), neither varied consistently with bed age or size. The Chesapeake eelgrass beds studied were significantly inbred (mean F IS=0.680 over all beds), with inbreeding in old, small beds significantly lower than in other bed types. Genetic and geographic distances within and among beds were uncorrelated, providing no clear evidence of isolation by distance at the scale of 10's of km. These results suggest that local environmental conditions have a greater influence on plant morphology than do bed age or size. They support the hypotheses that eelgrass beds are established by multiple founder genotypes but experience little gene flow thereafter, and that beds are maintained with little loss of genetic diversity for up to 65 years. Since phenotypic and genotypic variation is partitioned among beds of multiple ages and sizes, eelgrass conservation efforts should maximize preservation of diversity by minimizing losses of all beds.  相似文献

Large invasive predators like the king crab, Paralithodes camtschaticus, deserve particular attention due to their potential for catastrophic ecological impact on recipient communities. Conspicuous, epibenthic prey species, such as the slow growing commercial scallop Chlamys islandica, are particularly exposed to the risk of local extinction. A research program integrating experiments and field monitoring is attempting to predict and track the impact of invasive king crab on scallop beds and associated fauna along the north Norwegian coast. The claw gape of the crab shows no limitations in handling the flat-bodied scallop. However, the potential impact of the crab on scallop may depend on the availability of other calcified prey associated with scallop beds, such as the sea star, sea urchin, and blue mussel, all species recorded in the diet of P. camtschaticus. To address this issue, a laboratory experiment on foraging behaviour of P. camtschaticus was conducted. The experimental results show that all size classes of red king crab prefer scallops, but small juveniles and medium sized crabs demonstrate active selection for starfish (Asterias rubens) that equals or surpasses the electivity of the large crab. The selection of sea urchin (Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis) and blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) is slightly positive or neutral for the three crab size classes. These results suggest that scallop beds with a rich associated fauna are less vulnerable to red king crabs predation and possibly more resilient than beds with few associated species. Also, crab size distribution is likely relevant for invasion impact, with increasing abundance of small and medium sized crabs being detrimental for alternative calcified prey associated with scallop beds. Successive stages of crab invasion will see an acceleration of scallop mortality rates associated with (i) decreasing availability of alternative prey, due to protracted predation pressure intensified by recruitment of juvenile crabs, and (ii) increased number of large crabs. Estimates of crab density and intake rates suggest that the accelerated loss rates will eventually endanger scallop beds persistence.  相似文献

Two Lower Bajocian new localities, with many silicified bryozoans and brachiopods have been discovered in Causses (France): Saint-Rome-de-Cernon (Aveyron) and Mende (Lozère). The study of the faunas allows to increase the anterior knowledges supplied by the study of localities in the South of Causses (neighbourhood of Alzon and Sumène = North of the Seuil sud-caussenard).The interest is, at first, the distance between the localities: Mende in the North, Saint-Rome-de-Cernon in the West. Moreover, in the second, well-preserved faunas were fossilized without transport. Bryozoans and brachiopods are very numerous. Large and complete bryozoan colonies have been get out by action of HCl. Fine internal structures like rhynchonellid Nannirhynchia or like thecidean transversarium and hemispondylium have been studied. At last, observations and paleoecological hypothesis are drawn, likewise comparison between three localities or locality-groups known in the Causses basin. The fauna from Saint-Rome-de-Cernon is biocoenosis, the substratum was soft, the hydrodynamism low and the depth, according to lamellibranchs, about 200 meters. The beds with bryozoans and small brachiopods contain a fauna with two predominant bryozoan species: Ceriocava straminea and Mesenteripora wrighti. These two species could built large colonies, in spite of fine granulometry of the sedimentary bottom. These colonies provided supports to less adapted bryozoans, to thecidids and to lamellibranch Lopha. The beds with terebratulids and bryozoans contain lesser bryozoans and thecidids. Terebratulids are the main group and are fixed with their peduncle to organic support above the irregular deposits. Beside these benthic animals, the rhynchonellid Nannirhynchia campestriensis is epibiontic on gorgonids or epiphytic on floating sea-weeds.On the contrary, all fossils from Mende have been more or less carried, excepted large sponges perhaps. The most numerous bryozoans (Ceriocava straminea, Mesenteripora wrighti) and numerous Lenticulines (Foraminifera) lived on hard bottom with moving water in community with crinoids. It is possible that a smaller part of bryozoans, requiring lower hydrodynamism, lived, either in sheltered parts of the crinoid community or closer to the sedimentation zone. Thecidids were fixed either on bryozoans in crinoid communities or on shelly remains and on bryozoans nearer to the sedimentation zone. Like in Saint-Rome-de-Cernon, Nannirhynchia campestriensis was epibiontic, or epiphytic, or both.In comparison with the whole localities from the Seuil sud-caussenard, we notice the simplicity of Saint-Rome-de-Cernon and Mende. The localities from the Seuil sud-caussenard were assemblages proceeding from 2 or 3 biotops. On the contrary, at Saint-Rome-de-Cernon we have a biocoenosis and at Mende a thanatocoenosis supplied by one biotop almost.  相似文献
