Despite the considerable evidence showing that dispersal between habitat patches is often asymmetric, most of the metapopulation models assume symmetric dispersal. In this paper, we develop a Monte Carlo simulation model to quantify the effect of asymmetric dispersal on metapopulation persistence. Our results suggest that metapopulation extinctions are more likely when dispersal is asymmetric. Metapopulation viability in systems with symmetric dispersal mirrors results from a mean field approximation, where the system persists if the expected per patch colonization probability exceeds the expected per patch local extinction rate. For asymmetric cases, the mean field approximation underestimates the number of patches necessary for maintaining population persistence. If we use a model assuming symmetric dispersal when dispersal is actually asymmetric, the estimation of metapopulation persistence is wrong in more than 50% of the cases. Metapopulation viability depends on patch connectivity in symmetric systems, whereas in the asymmetric case the number of patches is more important. These results have important implications for managing spatially structured populations, when asymmetric dispersal may occur. Future metapopulation models should account for asymmetric dispersal, while empirical work is needed to quantify the patterns and the consequences of asymmetric dispersal in natural metapopulations.  相似文献

Internode length in light-grown peas (Pisum sativum L.) is controlled by the interaction of genes occupying at least five major loci, Le, La, Cry, Na, and Lm. The present work shows that the genes at all of the loci examined (Le, Cry, and Na) also exert an effect on internode length in plants grown in complete darkness. Preliminary results using pure lines were verified using either segregating progenies or near isogenic lines. The major cause of the differences was due to a change in the number of cells per internode rather than to an alteration of the cell length. Since the genes occupying at least two of these loci, Le and Na, have been shown to be directly involved with gibberellin metabolism, it appears that gibberellins are not only essential for elongation in the dark but are limiting for elongation in the nana (extremely short, na), dwarf (Na le), and tall (Na Le) phenotypes. These results are supported by the large inhibitory effects of AMO 1618 treatments on stem elongation in dwarf and tall lines grown in the dark and the fact that applied gibberellic acid could overcome this inhibition and greatly promote elongation in a gibberellin-deficient na line. It is clear that the internode length genes, and in particular the alleles at the Le locus, are not acting by simply controlling the sensitivity of the plant to light.  相似文献

Ecologists have, up to now, widely regarded colonization of islands from continents as a one-way journey, mainly because of widely accepted assertions that less diverse island communities are easier to invade. However, continents present large targets and island species should be capable of making the reverse journey, considering they are the direct descendants of successful colonists and provided that they have not lost their dispersal abilities. Recent mapping of geography onto molecular phylogenies has revealed several cases of 'reverse colonization' (from islands to continents). We suggest this phenomenon warrants closer attention in ecology and biogeography. Assessing its significance will contribute to understanding the role of dispersal and establishment in biogeographic distributions and the assembly of natural biotas.  相似文献

Tendons transmit tensile forces generated by muscles and are a crucial part of the musculoskeletal system in vertebrates. Because tendons and tendon cells respond to altered mechanical load by increasing collagen synthesis, we hypothesized that a correlation between tendon morphology and the loading regime imposed by locomotor style or habitat use exists. This makes tendons an interesting model for studying the relationship between morphology and environment. In this study, we compare the general morphology of the palmar flexor plate, the length of the digital tendons, and the length of the flexor carpi ulnaris tendon in species of lizards that exploit a variety of structural habitats. The results from statistical analyses show that phylogenetic relatedness has a major impact on our ability to detect differences between habitat groups, and no differences in tendon length could be detected between iguanian species occupying different habitats when taking into account the relatedness between species. Our data for lizards diverge from the general mammalian paradigm where variation in tendon is often associated with habitat use or locomotor style.  相似文献

The Asian tiger mosquito Aedes albopictus (Skuse, 1894) was first discovered in the South of Sardinia in October 1994, in a tyre depot not far from Cagliari-Elmas airport. Insecticide treatment was thought to have successfully eradicated the mosquito, but in 1996 and 1997 new breeding sites were discovered, a few at some distance from the first. More recently two sites have been reported in the heart of the city of Cagliari. It is not known whether the mosquito has spread from the first breeding place discovered, where treatment may not have been definitive, or whether they have been newly introduced. The recent sighting of Ae. albopictus in Olbia in the Northeast of the island tends to suggest the latter. Cagliari and Olbia are actually Sardinia's two largest sea ports of entry.  相似文献

Several recent studies of genome evolution indicate that the rate of DNA loss exceeds that of DNA gain, leading to an underlying mutational pressure towards collapsing the length of noncoding DNA. That such a collapse is not observed suggests opposing mechanisms favoring longer noncoding regions. The presence of transposable elements alone also does not explain observed features of noncoding DNA. At present, a multidisciplinary approach--using population genetics techniques, large-scale genomic analyses, and in silico evolution--is beginning to provide new and valuable insights into the forces that shape the length of noncoding DNA and, ultimately, genome size. Recombination, in a broad sense, might be the missing key parameter for understanding the observed variation in length of noncoding DNA in eukaryotes.  相似文献

Isolation by distance (IBD) is a phenomenon characterized by increasing genetic divergence and decreasing gene flow with increasing geographic distance. IBD is often used in conservation biology to infer the extent of gene flow among populations. An assumption inherent to this approach is equilibrium between genetic drift and gene flow, which may take thousands of years to achieve. This implies that empirical IBD studies of recently colonized areas, such as postglacial systems, should be concerned with whether or not equilibrium has been reached. Short of equilibrium, IBD should increase with the length of time since a geographical area was colonized. We test the prediction that IBD increases with increasing time since colonization through a meta-analysis based on a diverse range of empirical systems. P and r 2 values from published IBD studies were analyzed with respect to time since colonization (in generations and years), taking into account variation in sample sizes, molecular markers, divergence metrics (genetic distance, F st, Nm), and dispersal patterns (one or two dimensional). Overall, we found weak evidence for associations between time since colonization and IBD. Sample sizes, molecular markers, divergence metrics, and dispersal patterns did not appreciably influence IBD. We propose that the expected relationship between IBD and time since colonization is obscured by the influence of other factors, such as dispersal ability, geographical barriers, and proximity to glacial refugia. The possible effects of time since colonization should continue to be evaluated in empirical studies, but other potential factors should also be thoroughly explored.  相似文献

In many forest ecosystems, fine root litter comprises a large pool of organic carbon and nutrients. In temperate climates ectomycorrhizal fungi colonize the roots of many forest plant species. If ectomycorrhizal colonization influenced root decomposition, it could significantly influence carbon sequestration and nutrient cycling. Fungal tissues and fine roots may decompose at different rates and, therefore, ectomycorrhizal colonization may either hasten or retard root decomposition. Unfortunately, no comparisons of the decomposition of roots and ectomycorrhizal fungi have yet been made. Therefore, we compared decomposition of Pinus resinosa fine roots and ectomycorrhizal fungi from a Pinus resinosa plantation. We also compared the decomposition rates of nonmycorrhizal Pinus resinosa fine roots with roots colonized by nine species of ectomycorrhizal fungi. We found that the several tested isolates of ectomycorrhizal fungi decomposed far more rapidly than the fine roots and that ectomycorrhizal colonization either had no significant effect on root decomposition or significantly increased root decomposition depending on the isolate of fungus. We conclude that the composition of an ectomycorrhizal fungal community may affect carbon and nutrient cycling through its influence on root decomposition.  相似文献

This paper examines the efficiency of the incongruence length difference test (ILD) proposed by Farris et al. (1994) for assessing the incongruence between sets of characters. DNA sequences were simulated under various evolutionary conditions: (1) following symmetric or asymmetric trees, (2) with various mutation rates, (3) with constant or variable evolutionary rates along the branches, and (4) with different among-site substitution rates. We first compared two sets of sequences generated along the same tree and under the same evolutionary conditions. The probability of a Type-I error (wrongly rejecting the true hypothesis of congruence) was substantially below the standard 5% level of significance given by the ILD test; this finding indicates that the choice of the 5% level is rather conservative in this case. We then compared two data sets, still generated along the same tree, but under different evolutionary conditions (constant vs. variable evolutionary rate, homogeneity vs. heterogeneity rate of substitution). Under these conditions, the probability of rejecting the true hypothesis of congruence was greater than the 5% given by the ILD test and increased with the number of sites and the degree to which the tree was asymmetric. Finally, the comparison of the two data sets, simulated under contrasting tree structures (symmetric vs. asymmetric) but under the same evolutionary conditions, led us to reject the hypothesis of congruence, albeit weakly, particularly when the number of informative sites was low and among-site substitution rate heterogeneous. We conclude that the ILD test has only limited power to detect incongruence caused by differences in the evolutionary conditions or in the tree topology, except when numerous characters are present and the substitution rate is homogeneous from site to site.  相似文献

The protein titin has been localized by electron microscopy of myofibrils labelled with monoclonal antibodies. The data are consistent with individual titin molecules extending from near the M-line to beyond the ends of thick filaments, a distance of approximately 1 micron. In the A-band, titin appears to be bound to thick filaments, probably to the outside of the filament shaft. Molecules of titin in this configuration provided an obvious mechanism by which the length of thick filaments could be regulated accurately.  相似文献

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AMF) communities were established in pots using fungal isolates from a single field in Switzerland. It was tested whether multispecies mixtures provided more phosphorus and supported greater plant growth than single AMF species. Two host plants, medic (Medicago truncatula) and leek (Allium porrum), were inoculated with three AMF species (Glomus mosseae, G. claroideum and G. intraradices), either separately or in mixtures. The composition of the AMF communities in the roots was assessed using real-time PCR to determine the copy number of large ribosomal subunit genes. Fungal communities in the roots were usually dominated by one AMF species (G. mosseae). The composition of the communities depended on both plant identity and the time of harvest. Leek colonized by a mixture of G. claroideum and G. intraradices acquired more P than with either of the two AMF separately. Direct evidence is provided for functional complementarity among species within the AMF community colonizing a single root system. Competition among the species poses a major challenge in interpreting experiments with mixed inoculations, but this is greatly facilitated by use of real-time PCR.  相似文献

Telomeres are nucleoprotein structures, located at the ends of chromosomes and are subject to shortening at each cycle of cell division. They prevent chromosomal ends from being recognized as double strand breaks and protect them from end to end fusion and degradation. Telomeres consist of stretches of repetitive DNA with a high G-C content and are reported to be highly sensitive to damage induced by oxidative stress. The resulting DNA strand breaks can be formed either directly or as an intermediate step during the repair of oxidative bases. In contrast to the majority of genomic DNA, there is evidence that telomeric DNA is deficient in the repair of single strand breaks. Since chronic oxidative stress plays a major role in the pathophysiology of several chronic inflammatory diseases, it is hypothesized that telomere length is reducing at a faster rate during oxidative stress. Therefore, assessment of telomere length might be a useful biomarker of disease progression. In this review several features of telomere length regulation, their relation with oxidative stress, and the potential application of measurement of telomere length as biomarker of chronic oxidative stress, will be discussed.  相似文献

Seed dispersal is one of the least understood phases in plant life-cycles, despite being recognized as fundamentally important for understanding species distribution, abundance, population dynamics and life-history variation. For species living in fragmented habitats, dispersal may be crucial for regional persistence. This paper synthesizes studies performed in Swedish semi-natural grasslands and deciduous forests. The main objective was to develop a simple method to assess the dispersal and colonization ability of plants. Dispersal and colonization were considered as a series of steps: seed production, seed transport and seedling recruitment. With the use of verified assumptions on (i) a trade-off between seed production and seed size, (ii) a relatively small predictive power of seed transport for species actual dispersal and colonization, (iii) a positive effect of seed size on recruitment, and (iv) a general prevalence of recruitment limitations by seed availability, a prediction is made that dispersal and colonization ability will be highest among species with intermediate seed sizes in a given community. This prediction is supported by field data. Based on estimated dispersal and colonization ability, and the ability of local populations to persist, a scheme is suggested with four basic categories of plants. Some implications are suggested for conservation, in a landscape scale, of plants belonging to each of these four categories.  相似文献

The present work studied the little known process of lymphoid cell colonization of neonatal lymph nodes, while considering the nodal site of entry of circulating lymphoid cells and the either random or antigen-specific character of the process. Tissue sections of a mesenteric, cervical and popliteal node from each of 57 rats, aged 4 hours to 3 weeks, were analysed. Observations bear on the relative importance of the implication of the subcapsular sinus versus venules of nodes, and the composition of their emerging lymphoid cell population by determining the proportion of lymphocytes and blast-related cells. At 16-20 hours after birth, cell counts yielded a mean proportion of 84% for blast-related cells which decreased to 18% at 3 weeks. These percentages are compatible with values expected for a selective antigen-specific entry of lymphoid cells in nodes, not with values that would result from a random entry of lymphocytes. Moreover, observations revealed that by far most colonizing cells initially enter nodes carried by the afferent lymph, little via their venules.  相似文献
